Walter Hopps...Walter opened Ferus Gallery and partnered with Irving Blum and they gave Warhol his first show in 1962 which had his Campbell soup can set of 32 which Walter convinced Irving to purchase for 1000$ and later in 1996 sell to MOMA for 15 million. In 1963 the young Walter organized Marcel Duchamp’s first retrospective at Pasadena Art Museum where Duchamp played chess with a nude opponent. Walter curated the New Painting of Common Objects show which featured Lichtenstein Dine Warhol and Ruscha before the term Pop Art was used so today’s drawing is an attempt to give this amazing gallerist some love #arthistoryisfun #walterhopps #edkienholz #irvingblum #ferusgallery #urbansurrealism #galleryhistory #pdxartist #portlandartist #gregoryhergert (at Southeast Portland, Portland) https://www.instagram.com/p/CMOOg_NHvO5/?igshid=9skzsv645fas

"Sollie 17" 1979-80 Ed and Nancy Kienholz https://americanart.si.edu/artwork/sollie-17-68049 Sadly, the alpha lioness of the pride, Nancy Reddin Kienholz passed on Wednesday July 7th at 75. As a young court reporter, she met Ed and passion art and art passion rooted and took hold. Ed, initially, and then Ed and Nancy applied their unflinching and unrelenting gaze to a world filled with insufferable Injustices and brutality where our modern spiritual dilemma was without relief or satisfactory solution. Ed and Nancy, along with Bruce Nauman were two of the great pissed-off muckraking LA moralists artists. And ironically, while their art was filled with violence, loathing, indictment, pathos and ravaged decay, their work was often trancendantly beautiful. I don't think they have ever gotten proper credit for formal power of their work. Nancy's passing is a huge loss for us! Part of the “Cool School”, #EdKienholz raised the question of “Is this art?” When he debuted ‘Back Seat Dodge ‘38, 1964’ at @lacma in 1966. #ArtAboveReality #LookWhatArtFound #Inspiring #ArtJournalism #ArtPhotography #photoaday #photo #artist #modernart #CollectingArt #FineArt #LosAngeles #LACMA #ArtMuseum

#Repost @thejustinjorgensen with @repostapp ・・・ Hard to believe LAPD once considered this "pornography." Tonight a couple asked me to take their picture as they sat in front of it like they were picnicking. From the wall text "Back Seat Dodge '38" is one of Kienholz's best-known works. The sculpture depicts two figures made of plaster and chicken wire inside a truncated Dodge coupe, which is parked on a plot of fake grass strewn with beer bottles. The couple is shown engaging in sexual activity, set to a soundtrack of 1940s music. Originally exhibited at Dwan Gallery Los Angeles in 1964, the work caused an uproar. An anonymous complaint was filed with the police, and detectives from the vice squad showed up at the gallery to investigate. The case was dropped, but when the work was exhibited at LACMA in a 1966 Kienholz retrospective, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors demanded its removal, citing its "pornographic" nature. LACMA's Board of Trustees refused, and the museum eventually negotiated a compromise: the car door would remain closed, only to be opened upon request and if no minors were present. Dwan continued to show Kienholz's work in both Los Angeles and New York, often drawing attention and large crowds." #edkienholz #DwanGallery

Another Whitney Biennial! https://api.whitney.org/exhibitions/2019-Biennial#exhibition-artworks On the left is Nicole Eisenman's “Procession” (2018) and on the right is Ed and Nancy Kienholz’s “Ozymandias Parade” 1985 shown in their retrospective at the Whitney in 1996. See complete images that follow of each work. Despite the shear size and ambition of Eisenman's work and critical hubbub surrounding it, the “this works light hasn’t come on for me yet. Her work here certainly conjures Ed and Nancy Kienholz’s “Ozymandias Parade” (1985) shown in their retrospective at the Whitney in 1996. I surely love most things Kienholz in general but my “this works” light never quite came on for the “Ozymandias Parade” either. Much of this work is brilliant so I hope for light someday. Both works seem, forgive my license, contraptuous to me. A great Kienholz works because any ad infinitum elements are tightly bound together in an unflinching way from which there is no escaping the truth of the work. It may be filled with all manner of debris but ironically, never with junk. #edkienholz #edwardkienholz #edandnancykienholz #edwardandnancykienholz #ozymandiasparade #contemporaryart #contemporarysculptor #contemporarysculpture #petersheltonsculptor #petersheltonsculpture @petersheltonsculptor @petershelton.com @petershelton @sheltonbigart #petershelton #bigart #sheltonbigart @whitneymuseum (at Whitney Museum of American Art) https://www.instagram.com/p/BylPOOjlnsp/?igshid=mgpd70tife1l
