Though I will say something that's worked for me in the past when fic hunting when you don't have a specific ship you want is

Going to a character tag you like (or you know just the fandom page itself i normally do this to have less to look at so i tend to do characters i want to read)

filtering out everything except the couple type you want (so in this case everything but F/F though if you don't want gen fic make sure to click F/F in include as well)

and then excluding every popular character

(this is to get to the really fun rare stuff as well as cut out a lot of the people who are annoying and over tag characters

it makes it more likely to pull up fic actually related to the character you want but its a double edged sword since if you do like those popular characters they wont appear)

But overall it really cuts down the list fast and makes the search easier

then you can just add more or exclude more like normal

cutting down a selection of 8k where most of the first page didn't even seem to be f/f focused to around 400 with all of the first page being what I was looking for and after sorting by length I got these three at the top

here are all the recs I posted for femslash february 2024...! each individual rec post can be found in my femslash feb recs tag. I actually thought I wasn't going to be able to do this because work got super chaotic, but in the end I couldn't bear to skip out on a leap year. that's a whole extra day for yuri.

last year I focused on official releases, so this year I wanted to focus on series that aren't technically officially available (plus a french-japanese film). fan translations are always a dicey for artists/translators/publishers/etc because obviously they need to get paid... but yuri's already such an overlooked genre that—in an official capacity—we end up with a couple drops from what's already a pretty small pool. I read hana to hoshi about a decade ago, and I keep submitting it to the seven seas survey for licensure! and yet!! no dice. and even when there are official releases, sometimes they just... disappear!? wish you were gone was licensed and then taken down, so for a while the only way to read it (if you missed out on buying it) was the fan translation. I think it's important to support artists and official releases, and also, to appreciate the thankless endeavor(/crime) of scanlation.

Satoshio - Satou Matsuzaka x Shio Koube (Happy Sugar Life) VS. Shiro x Madame Witch (Albino's Diary)

Sato is 16 while Shio is 8, Sato kidnapped Shio, kills someone to keep her from being taken away, and they attempt a double-suicide.

despite satou being a yandere, and the age gap, satou and shio together are actually very sweet and wholesome! satou comes from a broken home and did not know how to love until she met shio, and shio comes from an extremely abusive and broken home and was abandoned by her mother in the rain. satou found shio and took her in to take care of her, and works a job so she can provide for her. satou also never does anything sexual with shio, and theres a cute scene where they have a fake wedding and exchange made up vows and rings. it ends tragically, and they jump off a roof together rather than be separated, but satou shields shio to make sure she survives the fall, because she wants shio to live no matter what. - Sato, a gay pedophile, spent years seeking love in the constraints of compulsory heterosexuality/teleiophilia (attraction to adults), constantly failing to find connection with anyone she dated or slept with. She didn't understand the sensation of true love until she met Shio. Falling instantly in love, Sato picks Shio up off the street and whisks her home to her apartment to live a married couple domestic fantasy. Sato works hard every day to support her new wife, and the pair recite wedding vows to each other every night. Their love isn't one-sided on Sato's part - Shio adores Sato and wants to be with her forever. -

satoshio quite literally cannot be in peace without each other as alluded to the ending where sato dies and shio never recovers from this, continuing the cycle of misery <3 sato is willing to do anything for this girl including murder and will not let shio out of her grasp their marriage promise scenes… ough…. i love them…. they just wanna make each other happy :) that just includes a lot of fine print to what happiness means but still, love to see it :3c

Inaugural Hacks Fandom Gift Exchange!

Hello, hello! This year, we are launching a winter gift exchange for Hacks! Can I sign up if I don’t write fic?

This event is for all kinds of fan creators! The form will give you an opportunity to check off what kinds of work you are interested in making (fic, art, gif sets, and/or vids). While we will be using a sorting mechanism, we’ll add tags to prompts to help ensure folks signing up to create vids or gif sets won’t be given someone whose prompts are nearly impossible to fill in that medium.

Can I sign up and drop out later?

Please don’t! For this kind of event, drop outs pose a big problem! Rather than having a simple theme day where anyone can post, a gift exchange means your prompts have been assigned to someone else (who will gift you a creative work), and you have gotten another participants’ prompts. Making sure that no one is left without a gift on reveal day means that someone will have to race around to fill your prompts at the last minute.

So should I just not participate if I don’t know if I’ll have the time?

One thing you can offer to do if you’re one of those people who loves the adrenaline rush of a looming deadline is to let me know that you *might* be interested in being a pinch hitter in case we do have drop outs or situations where life happens. This doesn’t obligate you, but it lets me know that I can reach out near the deadline to check in and see if you’re up for it!

Can I use AI to help create my gift work?

No. While other fan events may have different rules, for this event we ask that you not use AI at any stage in creation (idea generation, drafting fic, creating art, editing, etc.). These kinds of events are designed to foster community; we put time, energy, and real creative labor into making something to gift to another, and there is far more value in something with a couple tiny quirks or typos of handmade art than there is in the cold sterility of AI-generated outputs. Generative AI is, per the admissions of its own creators, possible only because of the non-consensual theft of vast troves of creative labor via large scale data scraping. These workers have been neither paid nor credited, but their labor is lining the pockets of corporate billionaires who continue to decimate the environment in an era of worsening climate catastrophe while exploiting invisibilized, barely paid workers in the Global South. Anyone found to be using AI will not have their work posted in the collection and will be barred from participation in future fan events.

The first ship that comes to my mind when people talk about femslash is Gabrielle/Xena from Xena: Warrior Princess, and somehow I thought the fandom would have a shitton of fic due to being old-ish because I thought that maybe Xena fanfic from other (maybe Xena-centric) fanfic sites or from fanforums or mailing lists had been imported to AO3. I loved Xena as a kid but have admittedly never participated in its fandom, so I don't know where Xena fans like to frequent. It currently has 1123 fanworks on AO3 (Xena: Warrior Princess has 2388 fanworks in total).

I haven't seen it mentioned/recommended in the recent femslash fic talk on your blog, so I thought I'd just do that, heh. Also because Xena is a very cool show and IIRC the actresses themselves ship their characters together and IIRC consider it canon themselves I think? May be misremembering though.

I wasn't in the fandom back in the day, though I watched the first couple of seasons as they aired. My impression is that the fandom hung out on forums and all kinds of standalone sites, many now gone and few imported to AO3.

Femslash February day 1- Frost

Gem swung down with an oppressive force, hitting Pearl square in the head and killing her instantly. Pearl’s body disappeared into white smoke, leaving behind her mace and armor, as well as a replica model of her head. Gem picked up all of the items, and skipped gleefully to her chest to put Pearl’s head away, along with various other heads (most of the heads are Pearl heads, and in Pearl’s chest is a similarly concerning amount of Gem heads).

Gem then made her way to Pearl’s respawn bed to gloat (and give her stuff back), but she paused when she noticed that Pearl was still unconscious, meaning she hadn’t fully respawned yet. Even with infinite respawn, dying over and over again isn’t good for you. Respawn takes longer with each death, and also has more side effects, and those side effects are not confortable. This makes Fight Club difficult, considering killing each other over and over again is kind of the whole point.

It took Pearl a minute to sit up and open her eyes. Gem poked her in the side, a teasing grin on her face.

“Looks like I killed you so hard I messed up your respawn!” She quipped, sitting down at the end of the bed.

Pearl rolled her eyes with a smile. “You got a lucky hit. I’ll get you good next time! Which should probably be another day because I am getting a headache.”

Gem nodded. “Alright, give me a moment to put the stuff away.”

A few minutes later saw Pearl and Gem walking together out of the ballroom. A gust of cold wind smacked the two girls in the face, and the realization that it had snowed a lot during their spar- and it was still snowing. The signature white fog of a blizzard filled the sky, obstructing Gem’s vision. A cold gust hit her again, causing her to shiver.

“Wow! It’s cold!” Gem exclaimed.

Pearl nodded. “It is. I don’t think you should be flying home…”

Gem gasped. “You know what this means! SLEEPOVER!!!”

Pearl grinned, immediately running toward her base through the snow. “YES! SLEEPOVER TIME!”

“W- WAIT UP!” Gem ran after Pearl, laughing with her friend.

Pearl had gone above and beyond for the impromptu sleepover. She set up a projector to watch movies and made soup for her and Gem to share. And now, while watching The Princess Bride, Gem was trying not to internally die. Pearl was leaning against her, the two of them swaddled in a thick blanket. Gem was sure the blush on her face turned her red as a tomato, she just had to hope Pearl was paying too much attention to the movie to notice.

See, Gem had a mountain-sized crush on Pearl, one that had been developing ever since Hermitcraft 8, which made her feel giddy at even the thought of spending time with Pearl. She should be happy at the opportunity for free snuggles, but instead her stomach was doing gymnastics inside her with anxiety.

Pearl burst into laughter, distracting Gem from her thoughts. Startled, Gem froze as Pearl leaned further into her.

“I forgot how funny this movie is,” Pearl said once her laughter died down.

“Yeah, it is,” Gem looked at Pearl, whose cheeks were pink from laughter.

Once Pearl stopped laughing her gaze returned to the movie, but Gem couldn’t stop looking at Pearl.

Pearl, whose hair was messy after a couple hours of fighting. Pearl, whose eyes shined with excitement. Pearl, who laughed with her whole body. Pearl, who was looking back at her. Pearl, who- wait what?

Gem flinched back when she realized Pearl definitely saw her staring, which caused Pearl to chuckle with amusement.

“What’cha looking at?”

And maybe it was because she was tired, maybe because she was sick of hiding her crush, or maybe she was just put on the spot, but instead of avoiding she question, she just blurted it out.

“You.”

Pearl chuckled again. “Well I see that, mate, but why are ya looking at me like I hung the stars or something?”

Gem fumbled for a few seconds, stuttering as she tried to find a suitable answer. But. But a pesky thought came to her.

Would it really be so bad if she knew you loved her?

Of course it would, she doesn’t like me back, it will just mess our friendship up.

How do you know that?

And Gem couldn’t argue with that. So instead she took a deep breath and took Pearl’s hands in hers.

“Because you… you are… because… YOU! PRETTY!”

Pearl listened patiently, and when Gem finally got it out, she chuckled softly.

“You’re adorable.”

Gem’s brain short circuited. “Huh?”

Pearl leaned closer. “You are adorable when you get flustered.” She reiterated.

Gem blinked. “You- you think I’m cute?”

Pearl nodded. “No, I know you’re cute. There’s a difference.”

Gem laughed in surprise. “I see.”

The two stared at each other in silence for a moment. Gem gave in to the feeling first and leaned closer to Pearl until their lips touched. Pearl kissed her back, and soon the passion led to them tangled up in the blanket kissing each other ferociously.

They parted for air, both of them breathing heavily.

“Wow.” Pearl was the first to speak.

Gem giggled. “Your lips are so soft,” she said, smiling.

Pearl laughed breathily, before she kissed Gem again. This one was shorter, but just as sweet.

Later that night the girls would crawl into Pearl’s bed, and Gem would fall asleep in Pearl’s arms, still amazed that this happened. And the next morning Gem would return to Magic Mountain wearing clothes she stole from Pearl’s closet. But for now, Gem kissed Pearl feverishly, chasing the taste of her lips. For now, Gem lived in the moment, kissing the most beautiful woman she had ever seen.
