Another reason I hate this sudden wave of acting like any trans masc who talks about his own oppression is being 'not chill' and 'whiny' and 'want their to be an issue when there's not' is that it exactly mirrors the way misogynists talk about feminism. Don't pretend it doesn't.

Only to realise you are a trans man (your feminist views unchanging) and end up going through all that again, being told basically the same dismissive stuff about your own oppression all over again (except now it's 'why do you hate women so much?'), but this time it's seen as basically ok by everyone from actual transphobic people to fellow queers because 'man' or 'masc' is part of your identity because people still don't understand feminism or how oppression works.

And that's if they even validate you as a masc nb or man and aren't still just treating/seeing you as a whiny hysterical woman whilst using the progressive term 'AFAB'.

I think I'm not the biggest fan of this genre. It requires too much suspension of disbelief on a large scale that to me doesn't feel particularly realistic (namely how quickly attitudes change among the older generations), while also understanding that this is not the point. The point is to argue against the annoying rhetoric you'll see where it's "Well if society was run by a woman it would be better" which is very untrue. And the violence here isn't sensational (as i saw someone on goodreads argue), it's not man-hating, it feels grounded in what it's trying to say.

But I feel like with all these characters the message is getting fumbled a bit? Idk. It reeks of "a white British lady probably white femnist" wrote this (and I say this as a white American lady.)

Idk the specific scene that annoyed me was when Tunde discovered that Nina basically wrote his book and gave him no credit and we as an audience were probably supposed to feel shocked or be like, "yup this is just what happens to women flipped on it's head." But all I saw was, "Wow a woman from the global north is taming advantage of a man from the historic global south. Shocking."

Ugh idk. I'm only reading this for a boom club and I hope I can find a review or something that captures the ick I'm feeling better than I can write it out.

Finished my Bachelor Thesis

I finally turned in my Bachelor Thesis yesterday - now I just have to wait for the official results. But that means I officially finished my bachelors degree and I am already in my masters study. This is not just to boast - even through thats totally viable too bc damn that was a lot of work - but I wanted to update what I actually wrote on.

You may remember that I stated at the beginning of this year that I wanted to write about "Politics of Memory" and the so-called "Comfort Women" but as it happens with Cultural Anthropology, while being in Japan I realized that this was not as easy as I thought and the paper would have been very historical which I honestly did not want one bit. I wanted to tie the topic to contemporary Issues -but the 60 pages of a bachelors thesis just are not enough to do this. So while being in Japan I wondered how sex-work, sex and consent in general are seen in Japan? Are those reasons why the "comfort women" issue was not seen as serious by japanese people? Could it be that sexual violence in general was disregarded in public discourse?

So I switched my topic to instead discuss the Construction of Consent in Japan. How do people in relationships understand consent and what is seen as sexual violence, what does the law state in Japan? I found myself digging deeper and deeper into NHK Surveys, Court rulings and Interviews as well as femnist movements within Japan. Well and this paper is what turned up. Now I just hope my advisors appreciate it as much as I do and when I have it back I might tell you more about it - unless they hate it which would ruin my self esteem...

preventing female characters with strong, compelling narratives from experiencing love, intimacy, and affection is just as regressive as reducing them down to sexual accessories for male characters. it assumes that women must choose between a romantic interest and depth of character and ignores a far more productive message: that women are capable of possessing both.
