Ok, ok I did some research cause it was bugging me and apparently Flanagan just got words mixed up, which I don't blame him for because I honestly didn't know that this word was a thing. I'm an idiot.

Apparently, he meant 'matrilineal'.

Ok, so in Erak's Ransom one of the reasons Duncan let's Cassandra go to Arrida to negotiate is cause someone (Crowley I think?) says they'll respond to her well because the Arridi are a matriarchal society.
