would love to request a "friends to lovers" story between Hiccup and the reader.
They could have been friends since childhood, but I’m not sure what you think about the idea where, as they grow up, it becomes completely normal for them to hold hands or even share more intimate moments, like a kiss. (Don’t let it show how much I love this dynamic).
I’d love to see how you would develop this story (only if you feel like it, of course). I seriously ADORE your writing! Blessings and kisses, MUAK! ❤💗
One of These Days
Pairing: Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III x Fem!Reader
Words: 3,740
You didn’t know when it started; maybe it had been when he’d smiled at you for the first time, or he’d held your hand, or leaned his head over yours.
Tags: httyd 1, httyd 2, friends to lovers
It was growing darker outside.
Frigid air licked at the frame of your back, slithering and scraping past cracks in the walls and shutters. It tasted just as cool as it smelt.
You didn’t know when it started, nor were you sure how to feel about it, what with that odd thing sitting between the two of you. You could tell he expected something, what with the way he often shuffled closer than was necessary and fumbled over his own words in an effort to impress.
“Pass me the hammer?” He asked you without looking, lanky shoulders square, hands pressed against parchment, fingers sliding absentmindedly over scrawled-out charcoal and past thick-handled tools.
You snuffled, blinking from where you sat just beside him.
It was just to the right of you on one slightly uneven workbench, closer to the forge’s main window than away. You grabbed at it with slightly wobbly fingers, grimacing as it nearly fell from your hands.
At twelve winters, you still had some time left before you’d really be expected to bloody your hands, and by bloody your hands, you meant to be able to take down a full-grown dragon on your own.’ Of course, most children by now had done their fair share of slaughtering, both animals and otherwise, but none had been able to make it during a raid without help. While you hadn’t done any of it, putting you sorely behind, you were still fine.
For Hiccup, son of Stoick the Vast, feared dragon-killer, the deadlines were a little bit tighter.
You placed the hammer firmly, determinedly into Hiccup’s open palm, the tips of your fingers dragging against slightly sweaty skin.
Gobber had been generous enough to let you in. He didn’t often or ever stop the two of you from doing things. Even still, this was the first time you’d been invited into the forge, and he hadn’t said anything.
Hiccup had also been generous enough to invite you in. You hadn’t quite recognized the invitation for what it was, nor did you think Hiccup did, either. Really, the experience was proving to be rather close. It was the first time you’d ever seen him so enraptured in his work, though, to be fair, you hadn’t known him for long. He’d hardly talked about it.
You doubted he’d told anyone else- it was going to be a larger machine. He definitely didn’t have everything he needed to make it. Not the wood, which would make up a frame large enough to swarf half your body, or all the metals and ores he’d need to make all the levers and rods.
He wasn’t wearing any fur coat, just an apron and his green tunic. He scribbled notes down like the world might be swallowed if he didn’t. You could tell he’d never done that before- made such detailed instructions, thought up such an elaborate contraction.
You liked him happy. You’d seen him frustrated and you thought that was alright too, puzzling over his own work, tongue peeking out slightly from between two teeth, not comically. It was more a subtle, awkward thing.
With his back to you, he worked with a dedicated, single-minded focus, almost tireless. He worked from the moment he sat down to the moment he finished his task with a passion usually only meant for the battlefield, spotted in the eyes of the hungry past floating ashes and spraying gore. It was a passion that said that nothing had ever come natural to him.
He taught himself how to try.
You thought that he must be daring, more than any Viking warrior.
Maybe he wasn’t yet a man, but you could see the shadow of the man he would be-mature, confident, skilled, focused. The way he worked in the forge- his need to shoot down a dragon paled in comparison.
You wondered if anyone else would ever get to see him the way you did, red-and-orange firelight warming his cheeks.
He caught you looking and he smiled, something almost half-toothless and completely crooked, revealing brown-auburn hair made to glow in the light of the fires, spotted gaps in rows of teeth, freckles dusting over a nose’s bridge like speckles on bird’s feathers.
He spoke almost hesitantly, confusedly, as if he’d just realized he’d forgotten to respond, and hadn’t realized it was that important, or that you would have been expecting it, though that didn’t matter to you, because he’d hardly needed to, “Thanks.”
Even unsure, he was much more at home here than out in the open world.
You felt your head perk, shoulders dropping as a soft, gawky thing curled and writhed bashfully in your stomach, not unlike the way a worm reveled in soft, blooming dirt.
Wow.
It hadn’t occurred to you that during all of a fortnight, you hadn’t seen him smile. Now that you’d seen it, you weren’t sure how you’d ever lived without it.
You thought you could feel the heat radiating from his body as you shuffled closer to him, your fingers curling around his bicep, slightly damp through thick cloth. Your legs were nearly brushing then, leather smock teasing against cloth trouser as you pondered what it might feel like to be handed back soft, honeyed flowers by those very same sooted hands.
You shifted, the grass beneath you wet, dew clinging to the sides of your skirt like a few shiny glass beads. You felt the warm sun against your face, tickling against small hairs and soft skin. Your journal was to your front, scratched up leather cover pressed to your hands, a charcoal stick laying abandoned across empty parchment.
Nearby was a trickling stream, water weaving past water, spraying hollowly against rocks and moss- you could have likened it to yourself and the feeling in your soul, knotting up your chest and mixing up all kinds of squishy insides.
The last you’d seen, Hiccup had been walking. Now, he was nearly falling over himself, legs jerking as his saddle’s straps and reins restricted the movement of his ankles. His shouts echoed around the whole cove, sound bouncing off cold, stone-basin walls.
His dragon slunk off in the distance, still apprehensive and avoidant. It hadn’t quite gotten used to you yet, which was fine, because you were alright with keeping your distance.
Even after you’d had your hand on its slightly-sticky snout, whenever you saw it, you thought of wide, razor-sharp maws and torsos torn from small bodies. A dragon was always going to be a dragon and they were very much deadly creatures- his reassurances of the fact that the Night Fury was just as harmless as any man did you no favors. After all, the only creatures as deadly as a dragon were, in fact, bears… and men. It made you nervous.
It had large, slitted serpent’s eyes, though its scales were flatter and its skin more leathery than warted or slimy as you’d expected from such a fearsome beast. Its face was oddly symmetrical and squat in an abhorrently off-putting way, its horns or fins or whatever else that came sproutings from its skull sort of floppy and bashful and sort of too-big and not-grown-into-yet, just like it’s bulky, soft-looking paws, sort of like Hiccup.
“T-Toothless!” Hiccup practically yowled, distressed and scolding as he fell over, face-planting into dirt and short grass, half helped-along by the wet nose of his dragon. The difference- you felt almost enraptured by it.
He was awful and very often sort of standoffish and sarcastic though not often crude. He was picky and sort of insensitive and he often trampled over boundaries like he was dancing hand-in-hand with trouble, except he didn’t know how to dance, and the hall’s fires hadn’t been lit in a while- not for a celebration, at the very least.
In that moment, though, you remembered the way it felt to have his folded knuckle digging slightly into your shoulders as he nudged against you distractedly, just out of view behind the wooden barricade as he was scolded by Gobber. There was something about it that you thought might be either meaningful or accidental that turned over something in your stomach, most particularly because -and not in spite of- the fact that it had come from such a scrawny, lanky, often very, very clumsy-footed boy.
The way he’d seemed, looking off reminded you of his father a little bit. You saw it, really- all the good and awful parts of the Chief that he’d most definitely inherited, even when most others couldn’t see it. You were scared of it somewhat; of how confident it made him, how distracted and sort of brave-like he could be, even if it only ever ended up making things work for the worst.
Past all your yearning, aching, wanting, and needing-to-have-ings, it scared you just as much as you thought you could watch forever. Did he ever feel the same way about you?
You hadn’t noticed as Hiccup had untangled himself from his trappings. He must have though, and quickly, as during the time you’d spent thinking, he’d walked up close enough to you to cast a long shadow over your face, pulling you out of your own reverie.
You blinked aimlessly as he settled down next to you. You spoke hesitantly, “So, uhm, how did the saddle…?”
“He didn’t let me put it on.” Hiccup grumbled petulantly. While nothing more or less than sort of scrawny, with the way you were slumping and the way he was sitting with his back straight, he looked sort of tall. It did nothing to erase the pout from his face or the nasal from his voice.
You started, squeaking as his dragon -for the dragon was most definitely his, now- stepped out from the shadows, melded to its back like a fresh set of armor as it stalked its way around the clearing, eternally predatory.
Hiccup seemed to relax some as you leaned against him, sort of using his shoulder as a shield, scooting behind it as the Night Fury grew closer. You felt particularly offended, even as he let you drape his arm over your middle, leaving his hand dangling awkwardly in the air. Protect me!
“Wow. What did I do?” Hiccup asked, half-smiling, shifting where he sat, unintentionally pressing your shoulder into slightly jagged rock as he got comfortable.
Sometimes you caught him looking, eyes agonizingly blank though the rest of his expression looked to be somewhat soft, the corners of his mouth pressing into a sweeter-looking half-smile.
You grumbled incomprehensibly as you felt yourself once again eclipsed by shadow, much bigger this time.
You leaned harder against his shoulder, one hand coming to tangle in his sleeve. You eyed it apprehensively, feeling thin twine catch against the place nail met skin. He didn’t get it.
“Don’t leave me behind.” You said suddenly, abruptly. “Ever.”
Hiccup rubbed the back of his head with his free hand, freckles and thin fingers easily losing themselves under the mop of your hair.
“I-ah, yeah, okay.” Hiccup said, brows crinkled, slight confusion evident in his voice, though it didn’t seem any less calm or comfortable for it. He especially didn’t seem to mind as you clung closer to him, something in his face glowing a blotchy, raw pink. “Alright.”
You were in danger. Really, if enjoyment was all he could bother to feel for your predicament, then you took back all of your praises.
You scoffed miffed-ly at a brown, quirked, knowing brow. The devil- He was such a boy.
It didn’t matter what configuration of the face you had or your height or size of hair color. That wasn’t what he thought of when he thought of you, at least not at first.
He looked back at you, sitting in the grass, leaning behind him and he couldn’t help but to think about how pretty your smile was, the way the sun lay over the side of your face and made you look as if you were glowing. Something in his neck twinged as he did, probably sprung or pulled earlier while he was trying to wrestle the saddle onto Toothless.
You were smart- a lot smarter than him on a lot of fronts, though he was pretty ingenious on his own, something anyone, even you, was hard-pressed to match.
Now, he realized, you were just as squirrely as you were cynical.
He’d never really thought of you as someone that needed shielding. You were just as capable and incapable as him in equal measure… mostly. But in that moment, the realization came to him that maybe you… wanted to be?
He looked at you as you muttered something foul under your breath, feeling the same way he did trying to figure out a puzzle and the same way he felt piecing axles, barrels, ropes and wheels together to make up something interesting.
There really wasn’t much else to it, was there?
Really, if that was what you wanted, Hiccup was anyone but the right man for the job, but, well, if you wanted him… Hiccup winced as you dug your nails into his arm, leaving what was probably a deep set of crescent-shaped imprints in his arm, even through his tunic.
Yeah, he still wasn’t sure how to feel about it.
“It’s cold,” You mumbled absentmindedly, eyes shutting some as a breeze brushed over your cheeks and past your ears.
You were right. It was chilly, of course, so high up in the watchtower. It was only your second time up there.
“Yeah…” Hiccup said, leaning closer to the fire.
The two of you bumped shoulders, using a spare piece of kindling like a chair. Your ankles were hooked together, tied like a knot in a rope. The sides of your legs were so closely pressed together that they were nearly flush, despite the fact that no one else was there besides the two of you, everyone else having long since packed up their things and left. He wasn’t sure what they’d talked about. He couldn’t remember.
Hiccup kept his eyes exactly where he shouldn’t, watching you.
Your eyes were half-lidded. You leaned over your knees more than not as you turned over a small, split spit, a chunk of lamb speared over one end, his fur coat draped over your shoulders, one hand clutching at the opposite, empty sleeve. You looked very pretty like that, contented.
“They’ve got to add some walls up here, you know,” You said, your head tilting upwards as you examined a particularly soft bit of meat, thumb sliding up your skewer as you tilted it slightly downwards.
Wow. Hiccup’s eyes were half-lidded, even as he poked at the fires with a stick, nudging the ends of charred logs closer to the fire half-heartedly.
He could hold you by the waist and sway with you and touch your foreheads together and you could play-wrestle and fight in the grass but he couldn’t kiss you and tug his hands through your hair unless he was braiding it and it was driving him crazy. He didn’t want to or have to but now that he knew he could, he thought about it pretty often. He was a teenage boy and you were a teenage girl and he’d always been curious, so of course he’d considered it.
He needed to. He had for years with all the force of a child who’d just learned how to dream. It was- It was… The feeling was surprisingly moral, but no less impassioned.
“One of these days…” HIccup mumbled distractedly.
One of these days. He thought that every morning, now.
Hiccup blinked, the two of you standing in front of each other, curling your fingers around each other, with your fingers still relaxed. It was comfortable, warm… easy. He turned it over in his head, again and again.
The cheering of the arena was nearly deafening to his back, the sound of metal weapons crashing against cage bars grating to his ears. They wanted him, blood, the Nightmare… Astrid was waiting behind you, eyes burning holes into him with all the conflicted feelings of a lost warrior. Even past all that, it wasn’t hard, he found, to focus on you; the lines of your face, the soft and hard curves, each and every blemish and soft patch of skin.
Huh. He thought.
He leaned forward and pressed his face against your bowed head, your forehead touching his shoulder dully past thick brown furs. He felt the split of your hairline against the tip of his nose. His eyes were closed tightly shut.
He reveled in the feeling for the moment, taking in the way your hair felt against his cheeks and the way the leftover grasses and burnt wood and juniper left a scent that laid thick over your scalp, both dusty and spiced, a lot like pine.
Ultimately, he was doing this for Toothless, but now, today, he thought that he might be doing it a little for you, too.
The whistling of Toothless' -no, the Fury’s- wings nearly stunned him, loud enough to make it more difficult to think.
Hiccup nearly choked on wind as he gripped onto the handles he’d built into Toothless’ saddle. For a moment, he thought they wouldn’t hold. After all, one small strap of leather was nearly nothing against the full force of the Gods’ cursed offspring.
They had never gone this fast before, his body felt hollow, both as if he was being nailed to the back of his dragon and as if he might just float off at any moment. The feeling It made him cautious just as much as he was focused.
Even past all of that, the space to his back felt abhorrently empty, and not just because of the way they pierced through the sky. Your tears staining the back of his shirt as he and Toothless dived and shot… He wasn’t sure hed ever seen you cry before. He still hadn’t- it was silent for the most part, and he’d just felt it, really. If he ever had, it hadn’t been like this.
He couldn’t bring you up with him. He couldn’t. Just as he’d almost died in the ring, you had too.
It wasn’t merely a roar, more of a phenomenon, something that shook even the air around him. It was all-consuming and nearly inescapable. The Queen had followed.
Hiccup furrowed his brows and kept urging his dragon upwards.
Rain beat heavily against the roof of the Chief’s hut, making the world around you feel even more cold, weak and hollow. Thunder roared violently outside as the storm raged on.
“Hiccup,” You choked on air and spit and half a sob as you stared down at a sickly, freckled face, sweat running down both too-pale and blotchy red cheeks, staining his shirt dark. Freshly-changed bandages bled a deep crimson, changing with the color of hot blood and foul puss as his knees, one foot-less and the other not, jerked reflexively against the sheets of his blanket.
He’d been consistently out between long bouts of delirium and fever, his eyes rolling beneath his lids, just barely visible under the flickering light of a single, dying candle, twitching viciously. You clutched at Hiccup’s slick palm with both hands as he fitfully fought his way past conscious dreams.
You’d stayed- you’d stayed all night and day.
If dedication had ever really meant anything, if worship and hope and work had ever really meant a damn, if the Gods had ever been real and if their decree had ever meant anything, you hoped your will reached the heavens.
“Lass,” The Chief rumbled deeply from behind you, his heavy weight causing old floorboards to creak deeply as he shifted.
You didn’t even have the energy to shake off the nearly unbearable heat of his father’s palm on your shoulder as you cried yourself nearly sick with tears and snot and spit gathering at every orifice. It was an ugly cry, an undignified, ungainly one, followed with all your fears and hopes and despairs.
You had your own injuries to tend to, yet you felt as if you couldn’t, not in that moment, not even if it meant that you’d have to be fighting off your own pains and fevers later, if you hadn’t already fallen under their grasp. The only thing you could do was watch and feel a need for Hiccup to be okay so deep it rendered you helpless. Ultimately, though, you knew his recovery had nothing to do with you.
Hiccup’s dragon had left to cauterwal outside, to wail and wreak havoc and feast on the latest fisherman’s catch. He seemed less worried than you and the Chief but more worried than everyone else, and rightly so.
Suddenly, you started.
With a voice both intensely raspy and wet, Hiccup mumbled your name. It hadn’t been anything special, more a simple expression of his recognition, yet you sniveled as Hiccup clutched back at your hand, his grip weak compared to yours, his eyes dull with the force of his fever. For a very long moment, he held it.
“Hiccup.” You tried again.
The Chief’s hand tightened over your shoulder, squeezing already stiff and sore muscles.
The last time you’d seen his eyes, he’d been staring you in the face, mouth opening and closing pointedly and yet no words had come out. He’d dropped you then, right before rushing up into the sky on Toothless’ back.
Parts of you had been pinned by the rubble after and you had nearly been left behind. You could barely think past the pain, yet you still remembered how it felt to be left on the ground, hands clutched to your chest, mind completely fogged with pain and fear, hoping and hoping and hoping, cringing and in pain as the sky flashed. The terrifying outline of the dragon queen in the sky, smoke and fog larger than life, everyone certain Hiccup was going to die, himself most certainly… It seared a painful picture into your mind.
Part of you had been in danger, then. You weren’t anymore. Now, you really loved Hiccup Haddock, and you needed him to be okay.
He hoped you were safe. He didn’t know what he would do otherwise.
He couldn’t ever let you go. Never. Not until- Not unless he died, even if it hurt and his forehead felt weighted with the pressure of all the world’s fires.

Warnings: /
Rating: General
Words: 483
Prompt: First snow, "Your hands are so cold"
Fandom: How to Train Your Dragon
Characters: Hiccup, Toothless, Stoick
Pairing: /
Author’s Notes: Randomly got the thought to turn this into a Femcup fic about halfway through, lol. Just because.
Enjoy!
-XOXOX-
Hiccup has always despised the cold. She’s done so for as long as she can remember. Perhaps, that has something to do with just how cold she always is. Her father, her peers, everyone in the village can walk around sleeveless in the barbaric north, but not Hiccup. No, Hiccup needs sleeves and a fur vest. She needs some semblance of warmth wherever she goes.
So she never would’ve thought she would ever welcome the cold.
While her burns have somewhat healed by now, she’s still covered in bandages. Even so, Hiccup still wanders outside because she wanted to watch the first snow of the season. It falls down so softly, so beautifully. It’s nearly enough to distract her from the worsening burn in her lower back and legs. No matter how much they’ve been healing and scarring, her burns still scream in the cold.
Even so, she watches the snow.
Hiccup is crying before she realizes it, her pain growing worse. Toothless appears next to her and whines, he wonders if it’s such a good idea for his human to be out here and standing on her doorstep. Out of the two of them, he has healed from their battle the fastest.
“I’m okay, Bud,” Hiccup tells him, though she isn’t certain anymore if her legs can carry her inside anymore.
“Daughter,” a voice brings both of their gazes down the steps. Their home stands on the hill, where the stairs up to the Great Hall begins. Lower down the hill, Stoick stands and looks up to them.
Hiccup says nothing, worried what her father might say to see her out here. He constantly reminds her how it’s too soon for her to be outside. Though he can’t keep her in here for much longer, Snoggletog will be coming soon and she needs to celebrate it.
Stoick walks up the steps and stops before his daughter. He places his hands on her cheeks and the chill goes through her.
“Your hands are so cold,” Hiccup tells him, but she says it in a way that she almost appreciates it. It’s just distracting enough to get her attention away from her healing body.
Then they go away and her father stands at her other side to watch the first snowfall, too. There was once a chance, shortly after the Red Death, that she might’ve never seen another snowflake again. And so, they both take this moment to just watch them fall.
They watch until Hiccup trembles too much and a light dusting of white covers everything.
Unhooking his cloak, Stoick wraps it around his heir’s shoulders. It falls around her like a wave of warmth, enveloping her chilled body. Hiccup looks up to him.
“Come on, Hiccup, it’s time to go inside,” he tells her and she doesn’t fight him as her father picks her up and carries her healing body back inside.

Stoick the vast X gn reader
NOT PROOF READ use of they/them, no use of y/n only use of "you or you heard your name being called before" aka second person, SFW no use of sex or dirty jokes. except kissing (ONLY KISSING) but little use of violence, (your dragons a armor wing btw its name is wingdome) setting: above the water in the middle of attacking dragon hunter ships
642 WORD COUNT
you hear your name being called from afar trying to see what called you a dragon comes forth a smile creeps on your face. Your dragon wingdomes wings flap going into the air "Stoick, I'm glad your here. the hunters have been on our tail for the past 15 minutes. we have enough energy to get rid of half these ships but there's going to be another hoard coming in around 10 minutes. But holding them off from berk I don't know how much longer we can last" you say rushed some words coming out a blur in a panic like frenzy. "don't worry were here now the rest of the riders are coming. calm down" his deep voice says finally calming you down as he points to the rest of the riders coming your way. "now we have to make sure they don't get any closer to berk." he say grabbing his axes and heading into battle you following short after.
Going in dodging arrow after arrow almost getting hit by a boulder wingdome goes under water. Then hits the side of the boat sinking in the water going to another getting a net thrown at you this time. Actually making only hitting you not your dragon you almost fall but quickly regain your self focusing on getting the net off of you.
tapping the side of your dragons neck taking the signal telling it to go to the left as you grab a knife to cut off the net part of it still being on your foot you try and grab it only to fall
getting it off mid air "wingdome" you call out only to be grabbed out of the air "you should be more careful when getting stuff off of you mid air and on your dragon" Stoick says his dragon going to yours as you climb onto your saddle "sorry ill try and be more careful next time" you give him a slight laugh
AFTER THE FIGHT (setting: your outside your house) no injuries happened thankfully but you have to take a few arrows off of wingdomes medal armor mentally thanking yourself that they are a armor wing "you did quite well out of there I'm glad to have you on our side" Stoick says with a breathy laugh "yeah we were able to save a couple of dragons," you say with a proud smile taking an arrow off of wingdome
"Hey I've been thinking for a while, and" he sighs with a minute passing "you know you can tell me anything" you say reassuringly he looks at you with a smile adverting his eyes for a moment taking a deep breath "your an amazing person everyone in the village knows it the way your kind and caring not to mention beautiful," he pauses for a moment "everyone loves you, including me but more then just how your heroic and kind. your personality has me in a loop hole. what I'm trying to say is I love you and I've know this for a month but before that month I've loved you just haven't realized it, would you be with me"
He looks at you for a second seeing your surprised face regretting it and backing up a little you go closer and kiss him immediately him begin a little surprised at you but returning the kiss
"i hope that answers your question" you say with a smile your cheeks being as red as a tomato "yeah it does" he says before kissing you again "well I still have duties to do ill see you tomorrow?" he says backing up ready to leave "yeah" you say before tending to wing dome again a cheeky little smile on your face as you hug them tightly after all your crush for the last years has finally asked you out.

Summary:
Being a big sister to Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III is not something for the faint hearted... Especially when your little brother drags you into his gang of dragon riders and enlists you for an adventure. New dragons, old and new enemies, new emotions, it can all be overwhelming, unless you're a healer and your family is Haddock, then it's your everyday life. However, there is room for something completely new in all of this. After all, everyone deserves to be loved. Right?
Chapter 2: No one chooses either family or desires
The fact that Johann didn't want to tell them outright what Heather wanted from him was not strange to Eira. Honestly, the merchant who had been supplying Berk for years always seemed... odd to her. She couldn't pinpoint what exactly made him seem suspicious, but sometimes his presence gave her chills.
"I'm sorry, Master Hiccup, I've been sworn to secrecy. The chief of the headhunting Asmat tribe from Papua New Guinea couldn't part these lips!" Hiccup tried to extract information from Johann, which didn’t go very well. At one point, Eira ran out of patience and hit the table where they were sitting with her fist.
"How about Stoick the Vast of the Hooligan tribe from Berk? Do you know what trade sanctions are?" She looked at the trader with a look she inherited from her father.
"Two terrible words that should not fall in one sentence from your beautiful lips, Mistress? Right! Where shall I begin?" Getting Johann to start talking was a lot easier than she thought.
"Let's start with why Heather is out attacking ships." She and Hiccup sat on the opposite side of Johann.
"It would have something to do with her entire village, including her own family, being decimated by a rather nasty group of undesirables. She's made it her personal mission to avenge her island and her family." Something in what Johann just said seemed suspicious to Eira, and her instincts were usually right. What they finally extracted from Johann was disturbing. If Heather was indeed tracking Dagur, their friend was in danger. She and her brother decided to search for her immediately before she found Dagur or, worse, Dagur found her.
"I can't believe she didn't tell us, we could have helped her!"
"Hiccup, calm down, you know Heather." Eira carefully watched the horizon, soaring higher on her dragon. "She always preferred to act alone in difficult situations."
"Yes, but that might get her killed! You know how dangerous Dagur is. We’re her friends, I thought she trusted us."
"You also go off on your own at times, so maybe instead of lamenting, focus on finding Heather before she gets into even more trouble. How does that sound, brother?" Eira knew exactly what to say to silence her brother. Hiccup began scanning the horizon without a word, knowing that Eira was right.
They flew the route Johann indicated throughout the night, but without success. As the sky began to brighten, heralding dawn, they finally saw several ships in the distance. They immediately split up, Eira and her dragon taking on the ships, setting them ablaze. Eira did this with great skill, trying not to seriously harm any of Dagur’s men. When she joined her brother's gang, she did so under the condition that she would not harm anyone unless absolutely necessary. Meanwhile, Hiccup freed Heather from her chains. As the three of them soared beyond the reach of arrows, Eira, quite irritated, began to scold Heather.
"Heather, this is madness! You can't face Dagur and his fleet all by yourself!" Eira's irritation grew with each passing moment.
"I'm not alone; I have Windshear." Heather was unyielding, dodging every arrow fired at her.
"Heather, it's suicide!" Hiccup tried his best to convince her, but Heather was stubborn.
"I'm ready to do whatever it takes! You have no idea what he did to me!"
"Are you planning to sacrifice your dragon too? In the name of what, Heather?! I know you want revenge, but you can’t do it alone. Let us help you for once in your life!" Whatever Eira said must have worked because with an irritated sigh, Heather relented and began flying toward the base.
On the way, they learned exactly what Dagur had done to Heather’s island and family. At first, Eira was furious, knowing that if she got her hands on Dagur, she would... Her initial frustration subsided, though. Heather’s story was consistent, but something told Eira that Heather wasn’t telling them everything or something was off.
Landing at the base, Eira immediately took the dragons to the stables and began checking Heather’s dragon for any injuries. This was her additional job, besides being a healer, she also took care of the dragons with Fishlegs. The dragon was uninjured, so Eira decided to return to the club only to find her brother and his dragon among stacks of maps.
While they were examining the maps, Toothless knocked over Heather's bag. Eira slowly approached and cautiously began to put back what had fallen out. Picking up the horn that Heather said was a gift from her father, Eira froze for a moment.
"Hiccup, do you remember Heather telling us that this horn was a gift from her father, right?"
"Yes, she mentioned it…" Hiccup continued to examine the maps.
"Hiccup, you need to see something." She approached him and handed him the horn.
"Is this... Eira, this looks like…"
"It's the seal of the Chief of the Hooligans from Berk, Hiccup. It's our father’s seal." Eira looked at him significantly.
"Wait, does that mean Heather is…"
"What? No! I would remember if Mom was pregnant besides you. Listen, we need to fly to Berk. I have a feeling this might be important."
Eira didn't expect to be forced to return to Berk so quickly, but something inside told her it was the only way. Landing in the main square, she quietly prayed that the elders hadn’t changed their minds about the search for her husband. Gobber escorted them to the Great Hall, surprised that Hiccup and Eira had returned so soon.
"Dad? We need to talk." Eira approached her father, who was sitting on his throne at the end of the hall. She handed him the horn. Stoick examined it from all sides, furrowing his brow as he always did when he was thinking.
"Where did you get this?" His voice was low, and Eira didn’t like his tone.
"From Heather, Dad. We know she's not our sister, but the seal on the horn is yours." Hiccup was worried, and Eira immediately noticed.
"There is a tradition in the Archipelago: a newborn child of the Chief receives many gifts. I personally asked Gobber to make a wooden weapon for you both when you were born."
Eira slowly began to understand what her father was getting at. When Stoick confirmed what she was thinking, she and Hiccup returned to the base in no time, only to discover that Heather had flown off alone again. Finding Heather was easy, especially since the map with her destination was pinned to the stable door with a knife. Hiccup stopped her at the last moment before she could finish off Dagur.
"Heather, no!" Eira grabbed her hand, pulling the weapon from her grasp.
"Eira, don’t interfere! I have to do this!"
"Heather, you can’t kill him." Hiccup showed her the horn. "You said your father gave this to you, right? The seal on the horn is my father’s."
Heather looked confused, just like Dagur, who was still tied up. She stared at the horn, at the seal burned into it, and clearly didn’t know what to say.
"Heather," Eira began softly. "Many years ago, my father gave this to the Chief of the Berserker tribe, Oswald the Agreeable, as a gift for his newborn daughter. It's a tradition in the archipelago, which means…"
"You were that newborn child, Heather." Hiccup had a serious look on his face. "Oswald the Agreeable is your father. Heather… Dagur is your brother, you can’t kill him."
The return to the base wasn’t as joyous as she and her brother had hoped. Heather didn’t speak to them, looking deeply lost in her thoughts. Eira expected the news that Heather and Dagur were siblings to be shocking, so she decided to give Heather space to process the new information. The next day, neither Heather nor her dragon was at the base, something Hiccup and Eira had anticipated. Their friend was strong, and with her dragon, they could handle whatever came their way. At least, Eira hoped so.
A few days later, her younger brother came up with another of his brilliant ideas, and Eira was truly grateful to the gods that she had replenished the stock of ointments for bruises the day before. This time, however, Hiccup outdid himself by presenting his latest invention: wings. When he fell into the water again, pulled out by his dragon, Eira had had enough.
"Hiccup, this is pointless. If you keep trying and Toothless doesn’t catch you in time, you’ll break your neck instead of just a leg." She approached him and helped him unfasten the straps holding the wings to his back.
"Maybe you're right..." He sighed, seeing the state of his invention. "Looks like the aerial tests will have to wait."
"Congratulations, that’s your first responsible decision this week." Eira even started slow clapping with a mocking smile on her face. "Another bit, and I might think you're growing up."
"Ha, ha, very funny." Hiccup snorted, though Eira saw he was also amused.
"Come on, let's go back, Mr. 'Brilliant Ideas.' I have ointments for all your bruises, and it would be good if you…"
She was interrupted by a sound that suspiciously resembled a dragon in trouble. The gang didn’t need much time; they immediately mounted their dragons and flew toward the strange noise. Eira had a strange feeling; the sound seemed incredibly familiar, which she didn’t like. Finally, they all saw what they were looking for.
"Hiccup, it's a Speed Stinger!" Eira landed immediately, far enough away not to scare the dragon. She dismounted and approached at a safe distance.
"Something’s wrong with its leg, see?" Fishlegs landed next to Eira and pointed at the dragon’s leg. Eira took another step to get a proper look. Fishlegs was right; the dragon’s leg was bent at an odd angle at the joint and was clearly causing the dragon pain.
"It looks pretty young. Why would it be out during the day? They’re nocturnal." Fishlegs mused aloud.
"It must have gotten injured and stopped here while its pack ran on. Hiccup, we need to help it. The Speed Stinger has no wings and now can’t defend itself." Eira took another step toward the injured dragon.
"You’re going to help it? Guys, she’s really going to help it!" Snotlout tried to protest, but it didn’t change what Eira was going to do.
"Snotlout, meet Eira. Of course, she's going to help." Astrid approached Eira slowly so as not to spook the dragon. "Got any ideas?"
"Yes. But I doubt you’ll like it." Eira gathered everyone and explained her plan.
"It’s madness! One jab with that stinger of his and you’ll drop!"
"Snotlout is right." Astrid looked like she had swallowed something sour when she said it.
"Wait, did I hear that right? Sure I did; someone’s finally thinking rationally here."
"Hiccup, if this doesn’t work, we’ll do it your way, okay?" Eira looked at her brother. She knew that regardless of what the gang decided, she had to do something.
"Alright, listen up. Eira, do what you think is best; the rest of you, move to a safe distance and intervene if something goes wrong. Understood?" Hiccup, along with Toothless, moved further away from the injured Speed Stinger.
When the rest of the gang joined Hiccup, Eira began to slowly approach the injured dragon. As slowly as she could, she took off her bag and sword, tossing them aside. Not looking the dragon in the eyes, which might have further agitated it, she moved closer with empty hands. The Speed Stinger moved its tail, tipped with a venomous stinger, in front of itself to defend.
"Easy, little one, I just want to help. See? I’m not going to hurt you." She used her soothing voice, the one she usually used when talking to her patients.
The closer she got, the more the dragon calmed down. Eventually, it allowed her to touch its head. The green scales were very smooth and quite cool to the touch. She could hear Fishlegs and Hiccup behind her, excited about how she had tamed the Speed Stinger. Eira, meanwhile, focused on the dragon. Its leg wasn’t broken, but one of the joints was sprained. She needed to immobilize the leg until it healed.
"Hiccup, I need your wings to make a splint." She addressed her brother, who slowly began detaching the necessary parts. Using two rods and a bandage from her bag, she managed to brace the leg.
"We need to get him to the base; it’s not safe for him here." Hiccup looked at the setting sun.
"You know the pack will do everything it can to find him?"
"Mm-hmm, that’s why we need to heal him and get him back as soon as possible."
Taking care of an injured dragon wasn’t new to Eira. For the next few days, she made sure the leg healed properly. At the same time, using the fact that the dragon trusted her, she decided to test something. Every day she collected venom from the dragon’s stinger into a small bottle. After a few days, the dragon was already healthy. What no one expected was that they would be recognized by the young dragon as its new pack and that it would defend them against other dragons. The young dragon fiercely protected Eira mainly, which, after the dragon returned to its pack, began to fascinate Fishlegs.
Eira had to wait a few days to test her experiment, and she didn’t have to wait long. Dagur attacked, forcing them all to take drastic measures. Astrid formed a team to defend Berk while they stayed at the base. Eira and Gothi tended to the injured for a long time. Eira decided to test the venom, and it turned out that a small amount on a needle, inserted in the right place, numbed the pain. Pleased with her discovery, she returned to the base, bringing along a Maces and Talons board. She missed the entertainment, and everyone in the gang, especially her brother and Fishlegs, enjoyed playing.
Everything seemed to calm down over the next few days. There was no sign of Dagur, which didn’t diminish their readiness. Eira and Astrid, taking advantage of the pleasant weather, flew their morning patrol, enjoying the peace as much as they could.
"Honestly, there’s no better way to start the day than with a flight." Astrid sighed contentedly, leaning against her dragon.
"Maybe we should do this more often? Every morning without the twins and Snotlout is pleasant." Eira sat on one of the rocks protruding from the riverbank. "You know, honestly, he’s not that bad. If he were a bit taller…" Both burst into laughter. Their rather idyllic time was interrupted by the roars of dragons somewhere in the distance. Firewing immediately tensed, standing next to her rider in a defensive position. Eira gave Astrid a significant look before they both mounted their dragons, wanting to investigate the suspicious noise.
They left their dragons at a safe distance, crouching low as they crept through the dense underbrush. The beach before them was a scene of horror: cages filled with dragons, the creatures' roars and whimpers echoing across the sand. Eira’s heart pounded in her chest as she counted at least twenty heavily armed men moving crates with ruthless efficiency. They hadn’t been spotted yet, which was their only advantage. Eira gestured to Astrid, and together they edged closer, keeping to the shadows.
Her eyes narrowed as she saw the symbols on the ships’ sails. Dragon hunters, and dangerously close to their base. One man stood out, tall and imposing with a smooth, shaven head, his tunic made of dragon skin. Eira’s blood boiled. This was Ryker, the commander, and the sight of him filled her with a fierce hatred.
"Eira, what do we do?" Astrid whispered, her voice tense.
"We need to get back to base and warn the others. Hiccup must..." Eira’s voice faltered as Ryker suddenly locked eyes with her through the foliage, his dark gaze sending a chill down her spine.
Ryker pointed at their hiding spot, and both women burst into action. They sprinted to their dragons, adrenaline surging. Firewing erupted in flames, creating a fiery barrier that forced the hunters to retreat. Arrows whizzed past, but Eira deftly dodged them, Firewing’s tail lashing out to knock away attackers. Astrid and Stormfly fought valiantly, but suddenly, an arrow struck Stormfly. The dragon’s wings flailed wildly before they plummeted into the sea.
"Astrid, hold on!" Eira screamed, diving towards the water.
She reached into the frigid depths, her fingers closing around Astrid’s arm. She hauled her friend onto Firewing, urging the dragon to climb skyward, out of range of the arrows. As they ascended, Eira glanced back to see the dragon hunters dragging Stormfly away. Ryker stood on the deck of his ship, a malevolent smile twisting his features.
They reached the base just before dawn. Eira rushed Astrid to her hut, wrapping her in blankets and administering warming herbs. Moments later, Hiccup and the gang burst in, their faces etched with worry. Astrid, shivering and furious, blamed herself for losing Stormfly.
"It's not your fault, Astrid. We’ll get her back," Eira said, her voice steely with resolve.
Astrid’s eyes burned with determination. "We have to. We can't let them win."
After gathering, everyone flew to the beach where the confrontation with the dragon hunters took place, hoping to find some clue as to where the hunters had sailed.
"They must have left something, anything." Astrid, still upset and angry with herself, paced back and forth on the beach. They spent several hours on it and honestly found nothing.
"How many cages were there?" Hiccup looked around the beach once more but found nothing of importance. Apart from a few empty crates, pieces of wood, and broken barrels, there was nothing on the beach that could help them.
"Remember how many there were on the Reaper? Double that." Eira was frustrated. People like Ryker disgusted her, and when she got her hands on him, he would regret the day he was born. Her thoughts were interrupted by Snotlout, who stepped on something sharp. Eira immediately ran to him.
"Oh, look at you. You ran over to help me right away; you know what that means, Eira?" She didn’t let him finish, quickly pulling out of his foot what turned out to be an arrowhead.
"These are the arrows the dragon hunters were shooting at us with." Eira stood up, examining it more closely. The green substance coating the arrowhead looked familiar. First, she carefully smelled it; the scent was familiar, but to be sure… she cautiously licked it. The taste reminded her of something. "Hmm, bitter."
"Have you completely lost your mind?! That could have been poison." Hiccup ran over to her, checking if she was alright, as did the rest of the gang.
"Calm down, everyone; I’m fine." She looked at her brother significantly. "They coated the arrowheads with dragon root; that amount… it’s no wonder Stormfly couldn’t fly. After such an amount, no dragon would be able to even stand."
"Alright, we need a plan." Hiccup gathered everyone around him.
Eira wanted to put the arrowhead in her bag when she saw a symbol on it. A clenched fist, of course, she now knew it was the symbol of the dragon hunters, but she had the unpleasant feeling that she had seen the symbol somewhere else.
"Eira, what do you think of the plan?" Hiccup and the gang looked at her, waiting for her opinion. Eira looked at the arrowhead once more.
"Forget the plan; I think I know where to find them." She said, showing them the symbol.
The Reaper had long been stripped of anything valuable, and after their last adventure on it, all the defensive mechanisms, including traps, had also been removed. However, they searched the
entire ship, still finding nothing that could help them. Eira, seeing her brother’s frustration as he searched the main cabin on the ship, stopped him by placing her hand on his shoulder.
"Listen, I know how much you care about Astrid and getting her dragon back." She spoke softly, so the rest wouldn’t hear. "But we need a plan, brother, and a good one. Ryker is a dragon hunter; he and his people probably know dragons better than us. Plus, those cursed arrows… one wrong move and we’re done for."
"So what, should I let it go?" Hiccup raised his voice slightly.
"Keep it down!" she dragged him deeper into the cabin. "No one is letting go, but we can't attack them like this." she pulled an arrowhead out of her bag. "Hiccup they only need six of these and that's it. We've never had to fight someone who knows how to deal with dragons before, so we need a plan."
She was about to say something else when a sudden crack interrupted her. Frustrated, Astrid had hit one of the shields hanging on the wall with her axe. Something fell from the shield and rolled right to Eira’s feet. Curious, she picked up what turned out to be a lens, and seeing the specific patterns around it, she immediately knew what to do with it. However, it turned out that the fire of none of their dragons worked on the lens. They returned to the spot where they found the lens, searching for more clues.
"Yes. It’s either the inside of a yak or a Changewing in a cage." Tuffnut looked at the shield from which the lens had fallen with interest.
"What did you say?" Eira took the shield from him, and indeed, the pattern on it looked exactly like a Changewing.
Finding a Changewing on their island was a very difficult task. However, getting acid from such a dragon was even more difficult. Standard dragon-catching methods proved insufficient. And just when Eira thought they had already failed, Tuffnut finally became useful for something. Of course, Snotlout had to find a new helmet. The acid surprisingly provided enough light to activate the dragon eye. Finally, the dragon riders could see the map.
"This doesn’t help. We’ve already seen this map." Fishlegs was right. Eira, however, looked at the map with curiosity.
"What are you thinking?" Hiccup asked his sister when he noticed she was staring at the displayed map.
"It must be one of their ports, maybe even a small camp. Look, this one is even near the beach where they took Stormfly." She pointed to one of the marked places on the map.
"Well, we should check it out." Hiccup was stopped by Eira, who pulled him back by the arm.
"Did you hear what I told you earlier, or did it go in one ear and out the other again?" She took the arrowhead from her bag. "I’m saying this to everyone now, so I advise you to listen. Six of these arrows and we’re all dead, so we’re not leaving here until someone comes up with a good enough plan."
Eira thought the plan was terrible. Making Fishlegs and his dragon the bait sounded like a bad joke. However, despite her efforts, she couldn’t come up with anything better. Initially, everything went well, giving Eira a spark of hope, which quickly died. It started when Astrid fell into the water and ended up in the hands of the hunters. Eira had to act quickly. She jumped off her dragon, landing gracefully on the deck. Drawing her sword, she swung at Ryker, who, despite not expecting her attack, easily parried her strike.
Ryker clearly knew how to use a weapon, and this was the moment Eira thanked the gods that her father had taught her how to handle a sword. At one point, when Ryker parried another of her strikes, she took advantage of the moment and punched him in the face with her left fist. Ryker stepped back a step and spat blood on the deck. He looked at her in a way that sent a shiver down her spine.
"Fiery, I love that. I wonder if there will still be so much fire in you after I’m done with you." Eira parried his strike at the last moment.
She didn’t have time to respond when Fishlegs and his dragon, along with Stormfly, flew out from below deck. That was the signal Eira was waiting for. Taking advantage of the moment, she jumped overboard where her dragon caught her, and together they soared out of arrow range. And that was the moment when the brilliant plan went to hell. The hunters, after recovering from the shock, bombarded them with arrows. Eira couldn’t do anything as her friends, one by one, along with their dragons, fell into the water.
Eira and her dragon caught Snotlout and his dragon at the last moment. Eira, seeing her brother wanting to save the rest, stopped him, shouting that they needed to retreat.
They landed on a small island, and Eira immediately began tending to the dragons. Eira was furious with her brother but knew now wasn’t the right time to yell at him. They lit a fire before the sun completely set, knowing they had a long night ahead.
On the dragon hunters’ ship, Astrid was taken for questioning. She still couldn’t believe Heather had betrayed them and joined Dagur, and thus the dragon hunters. Most of the questions were asked by Dagur, constantly threatening her maniacally. Ryker observed her closely the entire time until he stood up at one point, silencing Dagur. Ryker slowly began to circle around Astrid.
"The woman who attacked me with the sword, the one with the fiery hair. Who is she?" Astrid didn’t have time to come up with a lie before Heather spoke up.
"Eira? Why are you interested in…"
"I asked a question." Ryker raised his voice, and even Astrid flinched involuntarily. Heather looked like she was thinking about something for a moment, even casting a quick glance at Astrid.
"She’s the healer of the riders, the older sister of Hiccup, the one who rides the Night Fury." Heather involuntarily stepped back when Ryker approached her.
"Go on." Something about him made Astrid start to worry.
"I don’t know what you want to know, Ryker." Heather looked at the hunter defiantly. "You saw for yourself what she can do with a sword, so what else do you want to know? Are you going to play Maces and Talons with her?" Heather said the last bit mockingly, and even Dagur laughed. However, at the mention of the game, Ryker stopped and looked at Heather.
"Oh, that makes her even better than I thought. Such a fiery woman will surely be a nice companion for my brother. Just watching Viggo extinguish that flame in her will be a pleasure." Ryker turned towards the desk, unable to see the pure horror on Astrid’s face and partly on Heather’s when they realized what kind of company Ryker had in mind.
Ryker continued his questioning, eyes glinting with a dangerous blend of curiosity and lust. Dagur, clearly enjoying the twisted game, provided answers eagerly while Heather tried to maintain her composure, her defiance weakening with each passing moment. Ryker sprawled in his chair, a lecherous smile playing on his lips as he imagined Eira.
"Tell me more about her, Dagur. What makes her tick? What breaks her?" Ryker's voice was a silky purr, his eyes dark with intent.
Dagur chuckled, leaning back against the wall. "Eira's a tough one. Stubborn, fiery. She's got spirit, and she's fiercely protective of her brother and friends. But she's got a soft spot for her family, especially Hiccup. Use them, and you might just get under her skin."
Ryker leaned back, his eyes half-closed as he pictured Eira. "A woman like that is every man's dream. I can already imagine the sounds I could get out of her, the way her body would respond to my touch." He licked his lips, the image vividly clear in his mind.
Astrid's blood ran cold. She could see the twisted satisfaction in Ryker's eyes as he spoke, and the horror of what he was implying made her stomach churn. "You won't touch her," she spat, her voice trembling with anger and fear.
Ryker laughed, a low, menacing sound. "Oh, I don't plan to touch her, as the first. That's a pleasure I'll leave to my brother. But watching? Now that will be a sight worth savoring."
Heather's defiance faltered for a moment, a flicker of fear crossing her face. "You're a monster," she whispered, her voice barely audible.
Ryker leaned in closer to Heather, his breath hot against her ear. "Tell me, Heather, do you think Eira will scream? Do you think she'll beg for mercy? Or will she be stubborn to the end, like you?" His words were a dark caress, laced with cruel anticipation.
Heather recoiled, her eyes wide with revulsion and fear. "You're a monster," she hissed again, her voice shaking.
Ryker straightened, his smile never wavering. "Perhaps. But soon enough, Eira will know exactly what kind of monster I am. And she'll know that there's no escape." His eyes gleamed with sadistic pleasure as he imagined the scenario.
Astrid's stomach churned, her heart pounding in her chest. "You're sick," she spat, her voice trembling with rage.
"Oh, you haven't heard the half of it," Ryker replied with a smirk. "When I finally deliver her to my brother... well, let's just say even I am afraid of my younger brother. He can be… unforgettable."
Astrid's fists clenched, her nails digging into her palms. "You sick bastard," she hissed, unable to contain her rage and disgust.
Ryker leaned forward, his eyes gleaming with malevolent delight. "In Viggo’s hands, Eira will be treated wonderfully. He knows how to please a woman, how to make her crave him. She won't even realize when she starts begging him for more. And believe me, she will beg."
Astrid felt a surge of helplessness wash over her. She had to get out of here, had to warn Eira. But with every passing moment, the situation grew more desperate, and Ryker's plans more horrifyingly clear.

The Lost Sister
read it on the AO3 at https://ift.tt/34YmkSJ
by PheonixFire1502
What if Hiccup had a older sister? What if that sister what taken by a clan of Night Furies at a young age? What if she came back years later knowing the truth of dragons and having the ability to wield magic. How would it effect hiccup and his relationship with his parents? What if she teaches him along with her "older brother" loki?
I suck at summaries.

Thursday Thoughts: The Unfridged Woman
So there’s this awful story trope I’ve blogged about before, called fridging. Fridging is when a character – usually a female character – is killed off for the sake of a usually-male hero’s angst. The fridged character isn’t really a character in her own right. She is another character’s motivation.
Today, I’d like to point out a new trope I’ve noticed: unfridging. Unfridging is when a female character who originally had the sole purpose of dying to provide sadness and motivation for a male character, and lacked any story or motivations of her own, is brought back in a sequel as a complex character, vital to the plot and with her own motivations.
I can give you three examples off the top of my head, two of which I’ve already written about in Thursday Thoughts posts.
Here there be spoilers for the following film franchises: How To Train Your Dragon, Ant-Man, and Toy Story.
1. Valka
The first How To Train Your Dragon film focuses on Hiccup’s relationship with his father just as much as his relationship with the titular dragon. Hiccup’s mother is nowhere to be seen, and only mentioned once. When his father, Stoick, gives Hiccup a horned Viking helmet, he says, “Your mother would have wanted you to have it. It's half her breastplate,” he adds, pointing to his own helmet. “Matching set. Keeps her close, you know.”
The moment is played for laughs, but the implication is that Hiccup’s mother is dead, and the viewer is left to assume that this loss is part of why Stoick is so harsh on his son. But the mother has no name, no personality, no traits at all. Just a boob joke.
In the sequel, Hiccup follows a mysterious masked dragon rider into a cave to discover – surprise – it’s his mother! Valka is not only alive (and, at long last, named!), but she very much has a story outside of Hiccup and Stoick. We learn that she always believed that humans and dragons could get along, and she was taken from the village by a dragon who saw her as a potential friend. While everyone thought she was dead, she decided to stay with the dragons, and she resists the idea of returning to the Viking lifestyle she left behind.
While Valka barely existed at all in the first film, in the second, she is an essential part of the world. She’s an integral part of dragon society, proof that humans and dragons can coexist, and the reason why the viewer learns what we need to know about dragon alphas for the plot. Also, her agenda runs counter to that of the men in the film, but is portrayed as just as important and justified as anyone else’s goals – which is something I always love to see.
2. Janet van Dyne
I’ve blogged at length about Ant-Man and the Wasp before, but here’s the short version. In the original Ant-Man, we see in a flashback that Hank Pym’s wife sacrificed herself to stop a bomb, shrinking herself between the atoms and becoming lost to the quantum realm. As a result, Hank is incredibly protective of his daughter Hope to the point of keeping her from reaching her full potential and overall straining their relationship. It’s why he brings in Scott to be Ant-Man in the first place, rather than letting Hope do it.
In this film, we don’t learn Hank’s wife’s name. We don’t even see her face; she has the mask of her suit down the whole time. She only exists to have died in order to make Hank sad enough to make the decisions he does in the film.
In Ant-Man and the Wasp, Scott, Hank, and Hope realize that Hank’s wife – who is finally named Janet – is still alive in the quantum realm. Rescuing Janet is one of the film’s two main plotlines. What’s more, Janet is not simply a damsel waiting to be saved. She has an active hand in her own rescue, planting messages in Scott’s head to start the plot, and at one point even taking control of Scott’s body to correct her family’s equations to make sure that they can come get her.
And when Janet is finally brought back to the full-size world, she steps in to solve the film’s other main problem: she is able to heal Ghost when no one else could. Janet van Dyne goes from existing only as motivation for her husband to being an essential character in both plotlines of Ant-Man and the Wasp. The sequel film literally would not be the same without her.
3. Bo Peep
In Toy Story and Toy Story 2, Bo Peep doesn’t do much. She’s established as Woody’s love interest, and she has a few cheeky quotes, but that’s about it for her role in the films. Then, in Toy Story 3, she’s fridged. Rex mentions her as a part of a list of toys who have been given away over the years, and Woody has a moment of sadness. She may not be dead, technically – if it’s even possible for toys to die – but she’s gone, with very little fanfare and no indication of what she herself wanted out of life.
Toy Story 4 blows the three previous films out of the park in regards to Bo. Again, I’ve blogged about this before, but here’s the short version. Toy Story 4 establishes Bo as a leader in her own right, both in Molly’s room in a flashback and among the Lost Toys in the present. While Woody is frequently a purposeless fish out of water in this film, Bo is the one who knows how the world works, making her essential to the plot. She also has her own agenda – she doesn’t want a kid to own her; she wants to be free, and for Woody to come with her. Best of all, in the end, Bo gets everything she wants. She goes from being a nobody to being one of the most important people in the movie.
Why Does This Matter?
It’s not enough for women to merely exist in films. As I’ve said before, it matters that female characters matter. It’s important that they have motivations which the film treats as important, and it’s important that they exist as more than just a small part of a male character’s life. If the vast majority of films we see show us that men have important adventures and women only exist to motivate men, we internalize that message. Girls learn that they don’t go on adventures, and boys learn that what they want matters more than what girls want.
It’s very interesting to see film franchises apparently realizing in hindsight that their female characters need to matter and developing women more in sequel films. Once is an exception, and twice is a coincidence, but three times is an intriguing trend.
I hope to see more sequels which correct their prequels’ fridging, and fewer films in which women are fridged at all. (Remind me to rant at some point about L3-37 in Solo: A Star Wars Story – an example of a prequel going out of its way to insert a fridged woman to the franchise.) Or, hey, maybe we could fridge a few men for a change.
Have you noticed any other unfridged women in films? Can you think of any female characters who deserve more development than the original film gave them? Retweet, reply, or reblog with your thoughts!

Breaking the Ice Post
How Were You Introduced To The Franchise?
Like many I was introduced to the franchise with the beautiful movie. I already had a love for dragons so it was wonderful to delve deeper.
Favorite Movie/Show
Race to the Edge. I love being introduced to new riders and dragons and you can’t beat Viggo as antagonist. You were guessing at every turn!
Favorite Dragon And Human
Oooh, it’s a toss up between Dagur’s crazy personality and the Astrid/Stormfly team. I love how competitive she is, and how bird-like Stormfly is to watch. Together they’re a marvelous flying team. It’s why I love the series more than the movies, more depth to all partner relationships and the world doesn’t revolve around Hiccup and Toothless. I also really appreciate Stoick the Vast as a father figure. He learned, he did a wonderful job supporting and driving Hiccup to be all he could be. He loved and believed in his son.
Least Favorite Dragon And Human
Grimmel. He’s the laziest villain and doesn’t hold a candle to Viggo, Krogan or any of the series antagonists.
Favorite Dragon Species
A toss between Sentinels and the Triple Strike. I also think the thunderdrum is a very fun design.
Least Favorite Dragon Species
Sorry guys, Lightfury. They’re canon, and I accept them but they also feel like a dull fan oc recolour. She’s so sparkly!!! And White! And ridiculously gendered! OrIGinAL ChARActeR!!! DO NOT STEAL!!!
Favorite Song
Don’t get me wrong, there are so many exciting and uplifting songs but the one that gets the most out of me is For the Dancing and Dreaming. Stoic is such a wonderful character and I get a little smile and a tear watching Stoic and Valka reunited. It’s such a sweet, cheerful, beautiful song.
Favorite HTTYD Game
Rise of Berk. I’m both busy and lazy to a mobile game that just requires tapping is right up my alley… But their dragon designs are incredible!
Favourite Fandom Things
Ridersonas! Gimme all the Ridersona OCs! I know it's probably not popular, but I really like seeing the more unusual dragons as partners…
There’s tons and tons of Fury subspecies but I haven’t seen an OC riding a Grapple Grounder yet, or a Sliquifier or Thornridge! I’d love to meet more of those!
Favourite Fanfiction Stories
I love fanfiction so I added my own. My favourite thing to read are OC Ridersona stories. Just like in the tv series, my favourite thing is to see a trainer form their bond with a unique dragon species. It was better than horoscopes! Stoic the Vast taming Thornado! How cute was it when Eret reached out to Skullcrusher at the end of HTTYD2? Grump meeting and saving Gobber! How awesome was it to cheer on Dagur and Sleuther as they fought together? Even Viggo bonded with the Skrill! A different dragon for every kind of trainer!
Seeing an OC/dragon species bond we haven’t seen before is like opening a Gatcha surprise!
I like OC fics that find their own plot. I quite like ‘School of Dragon’ fics because they’re an easy way to insert an OC naturally. I’d also like to see some post HTTYD3 fics, maybe Zephyr and Nuffink form their own team to defend the HiddenWorld?
I don’t want to reread the entirety of Defenders of Berk with an OC squeezed in like a sixth finger in a glove. I call these Dolly or Clone Fics, like Dolly the Sheep. A poor clone with weird tumours growing on it.
I also don’t read fics where trainers have a nightfury or a lightfury or otherfury set within the movie/tv series. Drink an extra shot if it's a female. I don’t read these because;
(a) They’re more common. There are more trainer/female nightfury fics out there than trainer/timberjack fics out there. It’s like getting doubles in my Gatcha collection.
(b) It undermines the specialness of Toothless as the last nighfury and usurps the plot HTTYD3.
However if it’s post HTTYD3, there’s no reason not to introduce these kind of riders! I actually believe nightfuries and nightlights are more common in the Hidden World because Grimmel says, ‘My favourite bait.’ implying crossbreeds were common.
3) I think having another two riders on the same kind of dragon is boring. There are so many cool dragons! Sandwraiths! Hackatoo! Raincutters!
5) Talking to dragon OCs. There’s actually nothing really wrong with these fics, it’s just not my jam.
But I want to meet and follow more Ridersonas! Let there be more #httydocs !!

DreamWorks for the ask game (though in hindsight, I should've just added Disney to this because CROSSOVERS are a major thing since HiJack...)
Thanks for asking! But now I’m confused if you wanna see DreamWorks or the HiJack fandom...? So since I did Disney movies before, I’ll just do DreamWorks movies now (also that HiJack crossover is far too small and short a thing to make sense for this large-ass ask game xD)? ^^°
Top 5 favourite characters: JACK FROST, Hiccup Haddock, Miguel (The Road to El Dorado), Eris (Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas),
Other characters you like: Sinbad, Puss in Boots (Shrek), Megamind
Least favourite characters:that obnoxious alien from Home
Otps: Hiccup Haddock/Jack Frost, Tulio/Miguel (The Road to El Dorado), uuuh that is it when it comes to real OTPs though
Notps: Jack Frost/Elsa, Hiccup Haddock/Astrid Hofferson, Tulio/Chel (The Road to El Dorado), Stoick the Vast/Valka
Favourite friendships: Toothless and Hiccup, Jamie Bennett and Jack Frost!
Favourite family: Ooof... None? I don’t have a favorite family?
Favourite episodes: doesn’t really apply here
Favourite season/book/movie: Rise of the Guardians, by a landslide, followed by The Road to El Dorado and Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas! *^*
Favourite quotes:not a quote person xD
Best musical moment: The drunk godly song on The Road to El Dorado (a rare one, but I do prefer the English version here xD)
Moment that made you fangirl/boy the hardest: uuuhm huh... I don’t know, really. Most of Rise of the Guardians, really ^^°
When it really disappointed you: sadly there are a lot of turds in the DreamWorks line-up... but like that alien from Home. That movie had a lot of potential and the human protagonist was so cute but then that obnoxious creature that talked like Sheldon Cooper and made poop jokes... urgh
Saddest moment: WHEN STOICK DIED BUT I PREFER TO IGNORE THAT THAT HAPPENED
Most well done character death:Jack Frost’s
Favourite guest star: I don’t care much about voice actors
Favourite cast member: see above xD”
Character you wish was still alive: Stoick
One thing you hope really happens:a sequel or TV show for Rise of the Guardians, please, I deserve it ;-;
Most shocking twist: I... got nothing. Not a whole lot of twists
When did you start watching/reading?: When I was a very small child
Best animal/creature: Toothless!
Favourite location: Mh... the Tooth Palace in Rise of the Guardians?
Trope you wish they would stop using: there are probably a couple, but I can’t think of any right now... òô
One thing this show/book/film does better than others:occasionally, the animation and storytelling. It’s... so weird, because DreamWorks is really not very consistent with either of those. xD”
Funniest moments: the moment someone pitched a DreamWorks executive the Bee Movie and actually got away with that :D”““
Couple you would like to see: Tulio/Miguel. They should have been our first gay couple. I would not oppose to a sequel, even all these years later, that makes em gay
Actor/Actress you want to join the cast: don’t care much about voice actors
Favourite outfit: Jack Frost’s hoodie *-*
Favourite item: shoot, maybe the tooth boxes? They were so freaking pretty
Do you own anything related to this show/book/film?: A lot of figures/toys
What house/team/group/friendship group/family/race etc would you be in?: Maybe a Believer? xD”
Most boring plotline: uuuh Turbo? I just... I literally keep forgetting that this movie even EXISTS...
Most laughably bad moment: that human/bee romance in the Bee Movie...
Best flashback/flashfoward if any: If we take that as sequel again... uh... damn... Madagascar 2...?
Most layered character: Megamind...? He would have so much to offer, but a lot is played off as a joke. I mean, the kid was raised in PRISON. He was declared a villain before he ever even spoke his first word. He was raised by a FISH...
Most one dimensional character: Chel. Shit, she is such a cliche bimbo in the character design that is sooo cringey and then her only motivation is “I wanna get outta here because I don’t like it at home anymore. Also money”...
Scariest moment: Really not scary movies xD
Grossest moment: Fart jokes
Best looking male: Jack Frost!
Best looking female: ERIS!!! *^*
Who you’re crushing on (if any):Eris, absolutely. That trickster goddess can step on me any day of the week ù///û
Favourite cast moment: Don’t know any of that ^^°
Favourite transportation: The sleigh from North
Most beautiful scene (scenery/shot wise): ...the whole entire Rise of the Guardians movie? I have seen it about fifty times by now (and that’s not even an exaggeration, after I first saw it I literally watched it daily for a month...) - it’s so incredibly beautiful in animation and design, I can’t look away despite having seen it so often already
Unanswered question/continuity issue/plot error that bugs you:How are you this inconsistent, DreamWorks? How do you make something as beautiful as Rise of the Guardians and then have that followed by Croods...?
Best promo: That Shrek 2 with that Puss in Boots got me hook line and adorable talking kitten sinker ùû°°°
At what point did you fall in love with this show/book: Ironically, rather late. I used to watch them at first release as a kid already, but they never spoke to me, none of them did. Only after Shrek and Madagascar, when I decided to give the old movies a rewatch, I deeply and madly fell in love with Sinbad, Road to El Dorado and Prince of Egypt. Heck, I even ended up liking Antz.
