The Birth of Charles II of Spain

Carlos José, Charles II of Spain, was born on Sunday, November 6, 1661. The news spread quickly throughout the Royal Palace in Madrid, releasing enormous tension barely contained until then. Joy filled all the rooms, as Queen Mariana's pregnancy had come to a happy conclusion. Given the challenges of the previous days and months, this was a significant relief. Just five days earlier, on November 1, 1661, the Feast of All Saints, the crown prince of the monarchy, the beloved and cherished Philip Próspero, had tragically died. His death was a profound loss for Philip IV and his wife, who was in an advanced stage of pregnancy at the time. With the passing of the young prince, the Catholic Monarchy once again faced a lack of direct male heirs, instilling a sense of pessimism and fatalism throughout the Palace and across the cities and kingdoms of the realm. The death of Don Felipe Próspero, who was only four years old, struck the heart of the aged King like a dagger, leading him to believe, with certainty, that God had abandoned him.

Queen Mariana was deeply distressed. She understood her royal husband's feelings well. From her earliest childhood, she had been educated about the reasons for the state and was aware of what dynastic inheritance meant, so she empathized with her husband's dual pain—both providential and political. Additionally, as a mother who had already lost several children, she felt overwhelmed by the painful fate that the Almighty had in store for her, a fate that undoubtedly shaped her harsh and rigid character. The death of Philip Prospero, who was taken from life too soon, was just the latest tragedy in a long series of losses. Indeed, Mariana had endured a profoundly tragic maternal experience.

For all the above reasons, in the days following the death of Philip Prospero, the Queen's pregnancy, which was nearing its end, became a matter of first importance. The future of the Monarchy depended on this event. On Sunday, November 6, everything seemed to be ready. The doctors and physicians were on alert; the Queen's confessor was near her, and the Chief Steward of her Household was carefully reviewing the arrangement of the items in the birth chamber. To guarantee the success of the event, all the holy relics that were in the Palace and others brought from El Escorial and other places had been arranged in order.

There was the staff of Saint Dominic of Silos that the Order of Saint Dominic had brought, the ribbon of Saint John Ortega, from the Order of the Hieronymites; the incorrupt bodies of Saint Isidore and Saint Diego de Alcalá; the image of the Virgin of Solitude and the one so venerated by the royal family, Our Lady of Atocha. It is difficult to find a space so holy and sacred. Everything, then, was ready, the things of the earth arranged in order to implore God's pleasure.

At noon, after a frugal lunch, Philip IV retired to his chambers. At the same time, the Queen felt discomfort and went to her room. The midwife, Doña Inés de Ayala, and the chief physician of the Royal Chamber, Don Andrés Ordóñez, both witnesses of the birth of Doña Mariana in Vienna in 1634, were now assisting her in her sixth birth, the most anticipated of all. Mariana of Austria was then 27 years old. The chronicles say that there was no setback. It was one o'clock in the afternoon on that Sunday, the day of San Leonardo, when, according to the Gazette, “ 

a very handsome prince with large features, a large head, black hair, and somewhat swollen flesh saw the light of this world .” It was, of course, a very favorable comment, but soon rumors to the contrary spread through the gossip columns of the Villa and Court. That birth was received with joy. At three in the afternoon, when the news had already spread to all corners of the Monarchy and Europe, a sober and elegantly dressed Philip IV in black velvet, left his chamber and, “ 

accompanied by the Nuncio, the Grand Masters and the Ambassadors ”, headed towards the Palace Chapel in full courtly etiquette. There, the royal procession, presided over by the monarch, sang a solemn Te Deum, thus beginning the festivities that, in honor of the future Charles II, occupied the entire month of November 1661.

BIOGRAPHY

Marisol was born to a single teenage mother in the lower class district. Her mother, Celia, was 17 years old at the time of her birth. She has never met her biological father and she frankly does not care to either.

At the time, her uncle Gizmo was only 6 years old. He was more like a sibling to her than an uncle, and if asked, she will say that they're her big brother.

Her mom met her stepfather, Cal, when she was 3 years old. That is the only dad she's ever known, and the only one she calls her dad, because he is the one who helped raise her. They also welcomed her little brother, Felipe, into the family when she was 5 years old. He's a little shit, but she loves him to death.

She was diagnosed with ADHD shortly after starting school. Her parents helped her set up regular routines and reminders to help her with her day-to-day life, and that made a difference, but not enough for her to stay on top of things. She started struggling with anxiety because she felt unable to function properly.

At first, she was treated for her anxiety, until another doctor pointed out that she was likely to feel better and fare better long-term if they instead treated the root cause. Her family was no longer struggling financially, at least not as much as they had been when she was born, but they were by no means wealthy. And drugs aren't cheap, especially when you need to take them regularly. (And when the company who makes them have a monopoly on the market.)

She was offered a spot on a clinical trial for a cybernetic enhancement that replicates the effects of both slow release and instant release Adderall without the need for the drug itself. It helps her ability to focus in general, while also giving her an extra boost when needed. It is also completely intuitive; once she had the procedure, she didn't need to do anything other than maintenance.

It was relatively straightforward, it drastically improved her quality of life, and the cost to maintain it is manageable. However, unlike a drug, she cannot simply ween herself off it if she no longer wants the treatment—or the association with the company who produces it. And because it was a clinical trial, the expertise in maintaining it has not yet spread extensively outside the official channels.

Her experience with her own enhancement, as well as the experiences of other people around her in the lower class district, is what made her interested in both cybernetics and activism. She studies cybernetics at the university, where she has become a prominent participant in student-driven activism.

Her work has made her a familiar face within the activist group at large. She is very honoured to be considered a rising star, but also intimidated by the idea of people seeing her as a leader, when she's not sure that's who she wants to be.

In spite of her role, she has befriended and developed a crush on a boy named Jaiden West, which is... Unfortunate for her, seeing as he is very much entrenched in the corporate life that she is actively and openly opposing.

Because her dad works at the university library, she spends a lot of time there and even has a part-time job doing miscellaneous administrative duties.

Ten minutes later, Celia stepped in through the front door, locking and bolting it behind her before making her way further inside the house. It had been a couple of days, but everything still felt surreal; the last time she and Cal saw Luke playing in her head on repeat, as if convinced that on the next viewing, she would spot the signs that she missed. She would be able to figure out what else she could have done.

Crouching down next to Lady, she gave the dog a couple of scratches behind her ear before glancing up at Cal. "Hey," she greeted softly. "Care for some company?"

Lui is the fourth born Reyes Ortega sibling, up until he was ten years old, he like the rest of his siblings, had thought that he was Vero's twin brother. When the eldest of the siblings ran off, the twins tried to stop him, asking him to stay and help with the family. Their older brother on his way out decided to burn all bridges, letting it slip that Lui and Vero were affair babies from both sides. Lui the result of their mother having an affair whereas Vero was from their father's own affair. Also bringing in the realization they weren't related by blood.

In any other family this might have been a breaking point, but they were nothing if not resilient. Celia at 13 managing to keep the family together despite it all. His dynamic with Vero also didn't change, they still shared a birthday and siblings, so as far the family was concerned they were still the twins. While talking things over with Vero, the concept of gender came up, the two admitting being envious of the other in that respect.

A few conversations later and the two simply opted to switch their names along with their wardrobe. They managed to keep it mostly under wraps that they'd switched until Celia gently confronted them to ask how they wanted to move forward. After that Lui was officially Lui to the family and now the 2nd son in the family. Considering the family lacked any real male role models he felt a lot of pressure to be a good role model for the youngest sibling, Mo. Even greater pressure when Celia's boyfriend abandoned Felipe.

While he would have liked to study music in school, he doubted that be a career that would help pay the bills. Especially with his mom running away from the family, later finding out she'd reconnected with Lui's biological dad and opting to have a solo life with him. It didn't help that less than a few years later they gained another mouth to feed when Mo's dad dumped Marisol on their doorstep.

Opting instead to go to trade school alongside Vero, while it was out of town it was close enough they could come and help out when needed. Being a plumber had never been the dream, but it was a stable career which was about all he could ask for. He was in the middle of his training when the weekly phone call from home never came. Opting to follow Vero home to check in on everyone, which now over a decade later still has him in town, but hey the family is still resilient.

When they were in middle school Lui and Vero switched places at school, using every trick in the book to keep it under wraps. Eventually Celia caught on and made the change official for their family, though only those in their close circle know about the switch.

At 18, Celia took the twins to legally change their names along with their gender markers. Before this they'd been going out of town for gender affirming care thanks to a non profit organization.

While he considers all his siblings except their eldest brother to simply be his siblings, nothing half about it. Marisol is the exception in he calls her his niece, opting to be an uncle figure rather than an older brother.

A pot of food and a framed pencil drawing are delivered to Phoenix from Felipe via Jay. The cooking pot contains Celia’s best attempt at cooking ropa vieja with the ingredients available to her, and the drawing is Felipe’s best attempt at picturing Phoenix, Bradley, and Jay as they would have looked now if Bradley was still here.

There is an understated card written in Felipe’s handwriting:

This gift was entirely Jay’s idea, because I asked her what I could get you that I could realistically make. I don’t have as many talents as your daughter, but I do like to draw and I think I’m pretty decent at it, so I hope you like it.

Also, mom says “happy birthday and happy father’s day” and to call her if you want her to walk you through the reheating instructions for the food.

Phoenix had the pot on the stove currently being reheated per Celia’s instructions. Jay had been more than happy to tell him the tale of the dish, and he was polite enough not to make a snide remark over the fact that Felipe had told it to her. Glancing over at the urn he could feel his lips twitch into a bittersweet smile. A framed photo of the three now on the left and Felipe’s drawing framed on the right of it. ‘Happy Father’s Day, Bradley,’ he thought to himself before turning back to Jay. He’d cut back on the scary dad persona for at least a week to thank the boy he mused.

Taking a page from Clara, DJ opted to use a mix of his army and ranger gear. He honestly wasn't gonna dress up, but the twins hounded him the days prior. Maya opting to match him as a ranger while Alexa opted to be a barbarian. They also have already planned to drag him to the library to play DnD with Jay Romero-Sawyer, Felipe Reyes-Ortega, and Marisol Reyes-Ortega. "Wait.. did you give your kids actual weapons? Mo is the fifth born son in the Reyes Ortega household, the one night stand between his mom and the man she was seeing at the time. His dad wasn't around much growing up, hardly paying child support and never bothering to make visitation happen. It should have hurt, but somedays Mo hardly thought about it. Celia made sure of that, if his dad flaked, his family took him out for the day. If anything, he was glad when his dad didn't show up, if it meant his family got together it was bound to be a good day.

Over the years he noticed his mother's mood swings, the 'mom has a headache today' or 'she's just tired let her rest'. It was hard not to feel bitter against his older siblings, not understanding why they were allowed in her room and he wasn't It wouldn't be until her was older that he'd understood it was an obligation to be there not a privilege.

When Celia's boyfriend left for college, it was hard to keep his mouth shut, even harder not to go after the guy even if he was only 9. Still if anything, the thought of who needs dads was there in his mind. At 10 he swore to be the best uncle ever, but it was hard. It was the best and worst times, seeing Celia fall into a similar place as their own mother had shaken him, even if she did her best to hide it.

Things seemed to be settling down when he was 13, Celia had a job and everyone was pitching in with Felipe. At least until his dad strolled back into town asking if he'd mind babysitting his 5 year old sister. A sister he had never even met until that day, confused and a bit stunned he agreed to watch her for the day. A day turned into a week which turned into a month. Suddenly the Reyes had a new member to raise, and maybe Mo would have been bitter against his dad for it. It was hard to be bitter though, with Celia stepping up to help raise his half sister, there was no time to be bitter. Especially when a year later, deadbeat dads got overshadowed by actual monsters.

When Mo was 16 and in high school, he was a fairly popular guy with friends and was a star player on the baseball team. However one of his fellow teammates started spreading rumors to get him kicked off the team.

Wasn't long until the teachers were accusing him of cheating, his fellow classmates labeling him as a womanizer. Even a rumor floating around that he abandoned a child at the Commune. Mo ended up barely graduating, having distanced himself from his friends and quitting the team to try to lay low.

While he's not happy about the reputation he has in town, he also doesn't put much thought into it. He knowns actions speak louder than words. In this town there are most important things than reputation anyway.
