this is about a show thats over 20 years old but if you watched Felicity I hope you agree THAT NOEL LEAVING WITH HANNAH MEANT ALL BETS WERE OFF AND FELICITY SLEEPING WITH SOMEONE ELSE WAS NONE OF HIS BUSINESS?? Like how do you leave with your ex and say you might still be in love, and you need to figure it out, and bye, to your actual girlfriend in the moment and then be surprised she lashed out?!

Have you ever caught a Sunset Firefly?
(Long post; responses are from Lambda and Reownha; Armok; Felicity, Fennec, and Noel; Gwyn, Raven, and Link; Wulf and Lita; Zehka and Delphine.)
Lambda smiled and giggled at that. "Yeah, they're fun to play with and chase. Sometimes they even draw lines in the air! I like using my magic to make them glow brighter, too." Reownha looked at her sister and harrumphed, just so slightly. "She has an unfair advantage on catching them: She can summon this magic hand to grab them for her. I'd try it myself if I knew anything about magic, but unfortunately Lambda's not the best teacher and none of our family can really instruct us either. Furrele doesn't know that spell at all, and Quespa's magic is very confusing." More giggles from Lambda at this. "But I've caught a few myself, even if my sister's better at it; I'm quite stealthy when I want to be."
Armok shrugged. "I've caught a few in my mouth in my dragon form. They don't taste so good, nor did they make me more stealthy. I guess you have to cook them into an elixir to get that effect. But with my hands?" He held up his gloved hands. "No, they're too good at flying away. But as a dragon, as long as I don't move, most creatures don't seem to realize I'm not a statue." He snorted with amusement. "... Fucking pigeons and their habit of crapping on me."
"They're handy for the sneaky elixirs, so I'm always trying to catch them," Felicity explained, "but my brother's better at it. As if he needs them. It's as if sneaky elixir runs in his veins instead of blood. Well, the rest of us need to prepare a bit more." Fennec shrugged at his sister. "It's not my fault. Maybe I inherited some kind of magic from Mother. Who knows." "Who knows indeed," Noel sighed. "Fennec is simply the best at foraging despite the rest of the family's efforts; I've got some skill in catching fireflies myself thanks to my magic, but when most animals simply don't perceive him for some mystifying reason, it's difficult to compete."
"I don't tend to catch them myself, but I once often needed them for elixirs," Gwyn reminisced. "My son likes to catch them these days. I taught him quite a bit about cooking, both for food and potions. It's always gratifying to see that he enjoys it all– the capturing, the cooking, and the eating." "He's an abyss for a stomach," Raven chuckled, "and although we've never needed to forage for ingredients, he does enjoy doing so, just to show what his mother's taught him, and to see what she can teach him to cook. I've never caught any fireflies, but Link always loved chasing them when he was small, and now that he's learned, he's quite good at catching them." Hearing his parents gush their love for him, Link was strangely nowhere to be found...
"Fireflies?" Wulf blinked. "Oh yeah. I've caught loads. My sister may not be the best cook, but she's always asking me to help grab things like bugs so she can cook up elixirs. I like catching beetles most, but fireflies are pretty special... They're not magical, but their glow makes 'em feel like they are." "Strictly speaking," Lita explained further, "I prefer when my brother can catch beetles, to speak of insects. But vegetables and mushrooms are always preferred over the bugs. Elixirs are very useful when you can simply drink them and go, but we both eat a great deal of food."
"I don't really catch them," Zehka explained. "I just dance with them. They're so pretty! And my friend Delphine doesn't try to catch them either, she just watches. Except... they are kind of tasty. So I do eat a few. She's not so happy when I do that." "It's disgusting, Zehka," Delphine sighed.

Also me. To make matters worse or quite parallel, I was a lone office goth in the late 90's, clinging to the CDS of my dark music (No Filth though, sorry) and dressing as spooky as I could get away with. I didn't have a red door, but I was sequestered off in a cubicle away from everyone else.
I'm a little too much Richmond, even still.

Noel: “I am a bit of a goth, a bit of a Richmond… It’s pretty much 90 percent me. I miss Richmond… he had a sort of slightly vampyric element to him, a sort of mystical supermagic element.”

perhaps this is not precisely the point, but this is why I get annoyed at the commercialist insistence of rebranding Christmas as the Generic Winter Holiday That Can Be Enjoyed By Everyone. All the things the West (in the Northern Hemisphere) associate with Christmas are pure simulacra, dettached from anything that once was originally celebrating. I celebrate Christmas in summer with 38°C because I'm celebrating the birth of Christ and having a good time with my family. It wasn't invented by Coca-Cola, my grandparents told my dad about el Niñito Dios and the Reyes Magos way before anyone here heard about Santa Claus (Papá Noel, by the way). Navidad is not an invented holiday. "Xmas" is something invented in yanquilandia to sell stuff to everyone.
And no, this is not a traditionalist Christian posture from me, in fact it's the exact opposite because NOBODY should be forced to celebrate Christmas, the efforts to secularize Christmas just turn into that, which I'm opposed to; I'm saying Christmas needs to be a Christian thing so that it's not forced into everyone else. But the thing we are forced to celebrate currently is not even Christmas now, it's the Generic Winter Holiday invented by US commercialism. It somehow manages to impose Christian-normativity without the Christianity, Eurocentrism diluted to something I only can call "temperatecentrism", making you desire snow and reindeers while it's 35°C outside. Pure, unfiltered capital.
En fin. Felices Fiestas.
#cosas mias#when I say that holding temperate climates as the standard is a very subtle (not so) form of devaluing other places I'm not kidding#I'm sure someone must have written about this better than me#christmas

January/February Books
how to age disgracefully 5/5 (WHAT a fun and excellent book! i thoroughly enjoyed it and her other books)
the missing treasures of amy ashton 3/5 (a little repetitive? but enjoyable and engaging enough)
the bedquilt and other stories 4/5 (some were fairly stock 19th century pastiche but An American Citizen, about a Black man who moves to France, made me weep and i can tell will stay with me for years)
the authenticity project 2.5/5 (a little more annoying than the first book in this list by the same author but still enjoyable!)
party shoes 5/5 (i love noel streatfield's books!!!!! a thing of beauty and a joy forever!)
iona iverson's rules for commuting 4/5 (it's so good when people write honest and. idk. vulnerable? fiction! when they write what they wanted to write, from start to finish, without cringing automatically away for fear of controversy)
hench 4/5 (EXCELLENT concept. made me really angsty about the state of organized religion for a full week despite not technically being about that at all. except for how it completely is.)
dancing shoes 3/5 (this one was a little sadder than the previous two - it's hard to read something where someone is SO eldest daughterized and there's not really enough comfort to the hurt)
space opera 2/5 (enjoyable enough but a bit predictable as to the beats)
long live evil 5/5 (LOVE an isekai and this was an excellent example. wish i'd waited until the second one came out as it does end on a bit of a cliffhanger)
cold comfort farm 5/5 (became briefly obsessed with this for 4-5 days and watched two adaptations and read a bunch of Takes. sorry but i love a Practical and Cheerful woman Sorting Things Out!)
nicked 5/5 (MEDIEVAL HEIST MEDIEVAL HEIST MEDIEVAL HEIST WITH GAY PRIEST N CONMAN. lovingly and meticulously researched!)
felonious monk 1/5 (opening scene was so promising! devolved so fast into 'breasting boobily down the stairs' territory)
attracting birds to southern gardens 3/5 (a rare non-fiction appears! it's vaguely interesting!)
the knitting witch 3/5 (beautiful illustrations! i have a strong suspicion this was better before it was 'revised for modern audiences'. shades of george macdonald)
the comfortable courtesan 5/5 (thank you so much @berlincorpography for rec'ing these and sending me the first six! also strap in bc i enjoyed these SO MUCH i promptly read the next 20 or so)
Rustik Exile
A Change of Station
Old Enemies, New Problems
Dramatick Rivalry
Domestick Disruptions
The Comfortable Courtesan
Sudden Death
Romantick Stratagems
An Honourable Estate
Invited Everywhere
Felicities Maximized
The Ironmaster's Tale
A Man of Independent Mind
Incalculable Diffusion
Two Weddings & Several Revelations
Favours Exchanged
Mistress in Her Household
Above Rubies
Torches
The Chatelaine
Tricks and Traps
Good Practices
Coming to Terms
The Courtesan and the Clergyman
Revenants
landscape with an invisible hand 4/5 (love an inventive and. dare i say realistic take on an alien invasion. and so TIGHTLY plotted and concepted! what a masterclass in both.)
jane of lantern hill 4/5 (l.m. montgomery still hits! especially if you're into purple prose and anything with a strong sense of place!)
minor mage 5/5 (a t. kingfisher i somehow Hadn't read?! WHAT a gift! and with her usual incisive gift, she puts her finger Directly on what drives mob mentality and how it Changes Things and People)
pond 4/5 (another rec from my paramour! what a gorgeous. heavily gorgeous showcasing of how the mind works and how it comes out in real life sometimes despite your best attempts to tell it we live in a SOCIETY!)
the lawrence brown affair 4/5 (if i'd read this cat sebastian first i'd have been FAR more interested than when i read the robin hood one or whatever it was with the cartoon cover first)
mike 4/5 (my GOD you never thought there could be so much cricket in a book that is ultimately about the mating rituals of Public School Boys but thankfully it's a nice metaphor for the aforementioned so we'll let it stand)
moonstone 4/5 (thank u again babe! i'm glad i kept on despite the. less than stellar descriptions of sex lol. it was such a good depiction of how life feels after a pandemic and also the interiority of growing up gay in a small town precisely BECAUSE we are never given any glimpse of the mc's inner self)
psmith in the city 5/5 (to think i ever was afraid i wouldn't love these characters as much as jeeves and wooster! i think i might actually end up loving them More as odd as it seems)
