Being someone who read Under The Red Hood and came out with the firm belief that, for Jason, it's not about killing Joker, it's about Jason wanting proof Batman would choose him over the Joker (bc shelia chose the joker). Makes seeing any other media where it's all about just wanting the Joker dead is a teeny bit frustrating. to be honest

Jason could've killed the Joker himself, really, really easily. Jason kidnaps the Joker before the confrontation. I can't open my comic for a reference right now, but it felt like he had the Joker for quite a bit before the confrontation. He had him. He beat him up with a crowbar. He had every single opportunity to kill the Joker himself, but he didn't because that wasn't his goal. Make no mistake, he did plan for the Joker to be dead by the end of it, but do you see what im trying to say here

It's not about making Batman kill either. When Batman says he won't kill, Jason adjusts and goes, 'Let ME kill the Joker or kill me to stop me' instead. The test is all about Batman choosing him. The whole final confrontation is Jason's first death again. The parent, The Joker, and the explosives. It even ends with Jason unable to move as a bomb goes off right next to him again because the parent didn't choose Jason. And instead tried finding an option that'd benefit them and (consequencely) letting the Joker walk, again, lol, lmao <-in agony

Looking for Community Perspectives on Destiny���s Themes and Main Conflict for a Cultural Project!

Greetings everyone!

I‘m currently working on a personal project that ties in Destiny‘s themes and main conflicts with encouraging people of my ethnicity to tell our own stories, even if they include thematic elements that may not be traditional in Western media or have been actively discouraged by oppressive powers in the past!

My focus will be on how others perceive portrayals of social issues/powers we have struggled against as they are depicted in fiction, and to bring Destiny to the table, I want to connect it back to the Witness as a main antagonist and people‘s understanding of the role it plays in Destiny‘s main narrative!

I‘m coming here to ask some questions and have a space for people to engage with the thoughts of others in order to understand what people take away from the story of Destiny! These questions are asked for the purpose of steering my further research and conclusions; nothing will be published and identities of those who participate are not recorded!

My main questions are:

1. What do you think Destiny tries to say about the nature of existence and humanity’s place in it with the philosophies surrounding the Veil and Traveler?

2. What do you think Bungie‘s intentions were with creating the Witness and it’s beliefs to be the main antagonistic force in the Light vs Dark saga?

3. How do you view the Witness‘ relationship with the Traveler and Veil (and what can that tell us about humanity)?

4. What stands out to you about the religious influences in Destiny‘s story and how do they enhance and/or diminish the narrative it is trying to tell?

5. Has any aspect of Destiny changed your worldview and why?

6. Do you believe the Witness to be an evocative villain? Why or why not?

7. Do you have personal experiences that affect the way you view the Witness?

8. Why do you think Bungie decided to make the Precursors and the Witness separate?

9. Why do you think Bungie made the Witness a collective of a civilization’s ethos instead of a singular being/person?

10. Is there anything about the Witness‘ design/influences behind it that you would like to point out (especially in regards to its nearly human look?)

11. What can be taken away from the Witness‘ methodology for obtaining disciples, what it seeks in a potential disciple, or the relationship it has with its disciples?

Jumping off from this discussion with @ladykatibeth, but I want to talk about the parallels between Friedrich Harding and Count Orlok. I think there are a lot to be found, and in a way this gives some insight into Orlok more, imo.

In a lot of ways, Orlok and Friedrich mirror each other, both in personality/status, but also in the ties they have to Ellen and Thomas, respectively. The film itself imo draws up parallels - both via dialogue and in specific context of moments between Orlok/Thomas and Friedrich/Ellen.

Obviously we know Orlok is jealous and resentful of Thomas' connection with Ellen, but so to I think Friedrich is...not necessarily jealous of Ellen's ties to both Thomas and Anna, but neither is he all that thrilled or happy about it. She's an Other, and he doesn't like the potential scandal, the gossip she could cause. He resents when her mental health deteriorates and it pulls Anna's attentions from him. And even though technically she's of a higher class than Thomas, it's pretty clear that her mental illness in a lot of ways negates that (in Friedrich's view) and could potentially harm Thomas' ability to progress in life in a way that Friedrich approves of.

"I will be addressed as the honor of my blood demands it!"/"Know your place, madam!"

Orlok takes great offense of Thomas not addressing him properly, and when Ellen is finally too exhausted and frustrated to keep speaking with difference to Friedrich, he immediately bristles and takes it as insult. (Granted he is sleep-deprived and scared about his family, but this is something that has been building up for some time.) These moments between Orlok and Thomas vs. Friedrich and Ellen mirror each other (and also show how both Ellen and Thomas struggle to meet the "standards" of their gender roles, imo).

Orlok is the powerful figure tied to Ellen who feels possessive of her and will not take this outsider speaking to him with anything less than the respect he believes he is due. Friedrich comes across in much the same way, as Thomas' friend and benefactor and Anna's husband.

Thomas is a threat to Orlok's connection with Ellen. Friedrich, imo, sees Ellen as a scandal waiting to happen, and therefore a social threat to Thomas and Anna (and himself - and really, I believe he views Thomas and Anna as extensions of himself; one could also argue Orlok sees Ellen in a similar light; a possession).

Then there's Friedrich's dynamic with Anna as foreshadowing/a mirror to Orlok's with Ellen.

"I cannot resist her."/"He cannot resist her blood!"

Friedrich even says the 'cannot resist' line twice - first to Thomas, then again to Anna herself at the beach (which is then interrupted by Ellen, helping to lay more groundwork for his growing weariness and resentment of her).

I do not think it's coincidence that this phrasing is used for both Friedrich's love for Anna and Orlok's obsession with Ellen. The script itself even says when the men find Friedrich dead with Anna that 'he could not resist her'. The fact that Thomas finds his best friend dead in the embrace of his dead wife! This is such purposeful foreshadowing of what he will face at the very end.

"He could not resist her."

This is about Friedrich - but it is also Orlok's own undoing.

You mentioned you romanced Lucanis, how do you feel about Neve x Lucanis getting together if you don't romance either of them?

It's fine, I guess.

I romanced Davrin on my first playthrough, and I'll be honest, Neve and Lucanis getting together came out of no where for me. After the scene played, I realized that I rarely had them together in my party, and if I had, it'd probably make more sense. Or have more chemistry.

I left that scene like, "...What just happened? Oh well, good for them, I guess, have fun!"

I had Neve in my party a lot [Davrin and Neve were my go-to duo], and Lucanis was unfortunately benched until it was time to do his quests... which is really ironic, like if you had asked me who my least favorite companion was at the end of that first playthrough, it would've been Lucanis.

It doesn't help that I saved Minrathous, so I missed out on some of his personal quests, too.

I didn't dislike him or anything... though learning about Spite did have me throw him off the table of potential love interests because that Anders Romance Trauma [affectionate] kicked in and I said, "noooooo, I'm not doing that again, you cannot make meeee-"

Which, again.... ironic. Because he crawled his way back onto the table and made me feel things. It healed some parts of me. But also did more damage. It's complicated, like being an andersmancer makes it a whole other discussion for another day.

I will say, I saw a lot of talk about Neve and Lucanis prior to doing his romance which made me wonder if it was another Isabela and Fenris "Isabela bad because she USES Fenris if you don't romance him" situation where players are weirdly jealous and take it out on the female character... which uh oh.

Yeah, I can honestly say I never felt "threatened" by Neve while pursuing Lucanis. I brought them out and about several times, waited to see if they'd flirt or anything, or give me a reason to feel that he liked her more than my Rook, and like... It's not just a Neve and Lucanis thing.

It's more to do with Rook feeling like an outsider within the group who isn't allowed to interact with their companions until the game tells them to. Walking around the lighthouse feels really lonely sometimes because you're just approaching your friends, listening to their conversations, and then they look at you like "....can we help you?" and you just... walk away. Also the visual during team meetings where everyone is sitting together with Rook on the other side by themselves with only Assan sitting at their feet...

...again, topic for another day.

Anyway, aside from that? No, I never felt like they crossed a line for me that would make feel like they liked each other better than Rook. If there is banter that does, then I didn't get it.

There was this really sweet banter after I locked his romance in though, the one where Neve commented on Lucanis smiling more and making sure he recognizes that he's happy with Rook. That only endeared me to Neve more than I already was, I adore her.

But if I'm not romancing either of them? Let them have their fun, y'know?
