Fictober 2024

I am so happy to finally announce to you: Fictober 2024! I wanted to do something different from my Kinktober last year, so I decided to mix fluff with smut instead! Why just give you porn when I can also give you some romance? Like, yes we want to be railed, but we want to be loved, too.

Summary: After a long day at the orchard, your small family decides to end the day with a hay ride.

“Can we go on the hay ride before we go home? Please, mom?” Little Niko asks as she tugs on your hand, “You and me, and Daddy and Papa?”

You smooth your hand over Niko’s head, “You still have energy? You’ve been climbing trees all day.”

“A hay ride doesn’t cost energy!” Niko declares with all of the authority that a 6-year-old can muster.

“Oh? Is that right?”

“Please, mom? Please?”

“Oh, alright. Since you’ve been so good today.”

“Yay!”

“What are we ‘yaying’ about?” Neyo asks as he walks over, his hands now empty of the many bags of apples that the four of you managed to pick today.

You’re going to have so many pies and tarts and jams—

“Papa! We’re going on the hay ride!” Niko releases your hand and runs over to Neyo to take his hand, “Where’s daddy?”

“I’m here,” Bacara says from the left, he’s holding a tray with four styrofoam cups, “I got some hot drinks for us.”

“You did!?”

“Calm down, Bug.” Bacara chides as Niko gets a little louder in her excitement, “There’s no need to yell, we’re right here.”

“Oops, sorry.” Niko runs over to him and takes the smallest cup from him. “Mom said that we can go on the hay ride.”

“I heard.” Bacara glances at you and flashes a sympathetic smile, “Mom’s a little exhausted it looks like.” He hands you a styrofoam cup, “Herbal tea for the lady, and then caf for us, vod.”

“You’re the best, Cara.”

“I see how it is, I get stuck as a pack mule and Bacara is the best.” Neyo’s voice is lightly teasing as he takes his cup from Bacara and then slides his free arm around your waist.

“Well,” You smile up at him, “Everyone knows Cara is the cute one.”

Neyo chuckles and lightly kisses your temple, “Sure, sure. You keep telling him that.” His hand moves to stroke your back, “You good?”

“Exhausted,” You admit honestly, “Running around after a 6-year-old isn’t easy.”

“Well, the good thing is that the hay ride is nice and relaxing,” Bacara says as he makes sure that Niko isn’t planning on running off by holding onto the hood of her jacket.

“Speaking of the hay ride, there it is.” You say, glancing to the side as the cart comes to a stop not far from where the four of you are standing.

“Hay ride! Hay ride!” Niko cheers as she tries to run towards the cart, only to get scooped up into Bacara’s arms, “Hey!”

“You know better, Niko.” He warns, “If you don’t start behaving we’re going home.”

“Sorry, daddy.”

“Trade you, vod. You’ve been on Niko duty for the last hour,” Neyo says easily as he releases you, takes Niko from Baraca, and then heads toward the cart.

You watch as Neyo and Niko get settled on one of the hay bales, with Niko kneeling on his knees so she’s able to look over his shoulder out the cart, and you lift your comm to snap a picture. 

General Gallia will never believe that Neyo is a good dad, so picture evidence is important.

“You’re turn, cyare.” Bacara offers you his hand to help you onto the cart, and then he steps up as well. He sits next to you on a bale and wraps an arm over your shoulder, tugging you in so that you’re tucked against his chest.

As the cart starts moving, you snuggle closer to Bacara’s side and close your eyes. With Cara pressed against you, Neyo’s feet tangled with yours, and your boys having a low conversation about something unimportant, you can almost pretend that you’re back home.

Well, save for the chill that is determined to cut through your jacket. That kind of ruins the daydream.

You open your eyes when you feel Bacara laugh. You glance up at him, and then follow his gaze to a long-suffering Neyo, who is balancing both his caf and Niko’s hot chocolate, as well as Niko herself, who has fallen asleep against his chest.

“Ah, she overdid it.” You lean forward to take Niko’s cup from Neyo and then settle back against Bacara.

“Well, she has been going at full speed since we got here this morning,” Neyo points out as he adjusts Niko so she’s settled a little more comfortably against him, “I’d be more surprised if she didn’t fall asleep.”

“Well, I can understand why,” You admit with a shrug.

“Oh? Care to share with the class?” Bacara asks as he plays with the ends of your hair.

“Mm, you both were gone for four months and when you came back she had to go to school. This is the first day where she’s been able to spend all day with you in months.” You smile at them, “She missed you both. Almost as much as I did.” Your men favor you with soft looks, looks that are reserved for you and you alone, and you grin at them. 

“We didn’t plan to be gone at the same time,” Bacara mutters.

“I know, and you’re back now. Four months just seems like an eternity when you’re six years old.” You shift to kiss Bacara’s cheek, and then you reach over to Neyo to squeeze his hand, “But enough of that, let’s enjoy the hay ride before we go home, yeah?”

Bacara squeezes your hip and Neyo squeezes your hand, both of them saying, without words, that they love you, and then you settle back against Bacara and join their quiet conversation.

This really is the best way to spend time with your family, even if it’s exhausting.

Kinktober is just a few days away. This is my fourth year participating in this event, so there's some changes to how I am handling this.

Welcome to the 2nd Riconti October Bingo!

Changes to BBC Merlin that I think would make it better:

note: these aren’t necessarily all in the same au timeline but even one of them could’ve made it better

When Merlin asks Gwen for a sword she gives him the best one she ever made, not her father, so she and Merlin together forged Excalibur

Gwen is knighted alongside the others in the Round table

Merlin is officially recognized as the Court physician’s Apprentice rather than becoming Arthur’s servant (Why do you call him an idiot? By Yvion on Ao3 proves this)

In the scenario that Merthur happens, and Merlin’s the ‘queen’ and/or court Sorcerer, Gwen should be the next Court Physician

Or she’s with Lancelot and she becomes the next court physician, I just think she’d be good at it and it would give her a reason to have a seat of the council in the case that she’s not queen

Lancelot doesn’t fucking die

Arthur learns of Merlin’s magic during the Sigan fight and comes to terms with it on his own

Merlin doesn’t know his destiny (y’know… like the intro of the show literally says over and over again…) so he’s actually just listening to his own heart when he makes decisions and doesn’t have crippling anxiety from holding the weight of the world on his shoulders alone the entire show

More Gwen and Merlin bestie shenanigans before and after either one of them becomes queen

Gwen finds out about Merlin’s magic sometime in season 1

Merlin ignores Gaius and Kilgarrah and tells Morgana about his magic and they’re cool magic besties

Arthur doesn’t fucking die 3 seconds after finding out

Any of Arthur’s character development sticks for more than an episode

Arthur actually catches on to the fact that Merlin is usually right when it comes to danger or judging people by Lancelot’s episode

Gaius actually listens to Merlin instead of immediately shutting down his ideas even tho they usually turn out to be right later on

Morgana’s turn to being evil doesn’t happen completely off screen and she shows some kind of hesitation in harming Gwen, Arthur, and the townspeople even after she’s evil because seriously what the fuck was that

We get several episodes completely from Arthur’s point of view that show Merlin looking absolutely unhinged with absolutely no context followed by the episode from Merlin’s point of view where everything he does looks completely reasonable

So! NoHats! I'm going to grab you and use this to ramble. A Lot.

The NoHats AU is @samhainian's it's just that I'm the strange little freak who takes the words said unto me and executes on them. But I can still do a little explainer on what our overall thoughts and vibes are. (And, that we are in fact propping up a little box with some cheese under it here. 🪤 Please (PLEASE) feel free to pick up what we're putting down.)

We're far from the only ones exploring a "what if siffrin fucking died" AU, though the main difference with NoHats is the placement of the death in the timeline. Instead of being 'Mal Du Pays Wins' or 'Act 6 encounter goes horribly wrong', the death is… Just after the (literal) falling action.

(This placement is because Sam is a comic book fan who thus has become used to characters being ripped away at the cruelest times by shitty writers. THANK FUCKING GOD adrienne is not that and isat is delightful yippieee, but, back on topic.)

Giving the party the full understanding of What Happened that you get by putting the death after black hole siffrin, but before the A6 encounter leaves an interesting gap to be filled. See, making Siffrin's death very much not Loop's fault means that… this once again reads (when not read as simply a tragedy...) as the universe doing what it sees fit to fulfull Loop's wish… Thus making Siffrin's death Loop's fault again, but only in their eyes. And only in a way they could express if they were honest about who they were…

And this is where having had excuse to waffle about my general Postcanon Loop thoughts the other day comes in handy, because Sam and I have that as our canon-compliant reading to begin with, NoHats plays off of a lot of the same readings of Loop's character. Namely: Uh Oh Somebody's Lying By Fucking Omission Again. (BECAUSE TO BE FAIR THIS TIME… HOW THE FUCK WOULD YOU HANDLE THAT?)

Now, neither Sam nor I are fanfic writers, so this has been a little bit trapped in our heads and DMs (and my unfinished art but,)

But our thoughts on how NoHats like… Goes.

Siffrin's death is peaceful, but that does not mean the aftermath of it is. I can't imagine the party takes it well, especially after understanding the circumstances of the Loops. (And, of note, in A5 where nobody had the discussion on what to do with each other's bodies should something happen…) But I'd imagine it traumabonds them somewhat (understatement of the century) and now knowing how the rest of the party feels, they resolve to travel together for the forseeable future.

The party track down Loop to deliver the terrible news, since they were clearly Siffrin's friend too, and invite Loop along to travel at least long enough to (let them grieve) get the burial over with. Loop, here, can be helpful in knowing what Siffrin would've wanted where the party would be at a loss. Loop, I think, takes a bit of a lead on the funerary aspects of it all, because, um. (Performing rites on your own body, huh?)

Then, as things are after a death, life just… Kind of has to continue on as normal. The party travel, pick up Nille, and get to know Loop as this mysterious new person. Maybe in this situation they might stay in Bambouche for a while to give Bonnie more stability since. They are probably taking it the worst. It would've come out of absolutely nowhere for everyone in the party obviously but god, for a kid? For A Kid?

It should be stated NoHats is not intended to be grimdark, just y'know. An exploration of grief. This is also why it's got a bit of a lopsided focus on Bonnie vs the rest of the party because hhrrhghghhghghhhghhghhh <- incoherent

Now, a crossroads.

How does the party discover Loop to be Siffrin? How long does it take. How much have the party embraced them as part of the family (especially with something as intense to bond over as this)?

There's the Odile option. Have her put it together and have to bring it up somehow. This could also be done by Isabeau, perhaps. He's smart. (which. God. If anything's the real Isabeau Torment Nexus it's this)

Then there's the other option batted around by Sam and I. The: The Universe Dislikes Duplicates option.

The items in the house that fzzt away when inspected. The Universe doesn't like there to be two of something, at least not when they're acknowledged. But one of something is just fine…?

Which is to say. I'm not a personal proponent of 'Loop getting their body back'. EXCEPT …… except this one time.

There's only one Siffrin now, so they don't need to be obfuscated to exist.

Consider, if you will. Loop swallowing their guilt for long enough to be comfortable. Falling back into old habits. Without another Siffrin around to compete for the niche of, they actually begin to act like Siffrin again. Not intentionally, it's just… The party is as welcoming as they've always been. And the party swears they keep catching glimpses of a face under all the light.

Then, one day, while still not fully human again, the resemblence becomes undeniable. Loop having not even noticed until everyone looks at them like they've seen a ghost.

Has it been months? How long have they kept up this lie? Is it even a lie, to them? They're Loop. But they were, once, Siffrin.

Even after explaining it, does that make it better or worse?

Bonnie cuts through the betrayed, struck-nerve reactions with a sobering "I missed you."

… Anyway !

Yeah so that's the vibe for NoHats. As for LoopLoops? That's more nebulous. I think it can go anywhere really in the NoHats timeline. I err personally toward the "Loop continuously replays the last 10 minutes before Siffrin's death almost immediately after they find out and have to parkour their ass up the House in the most distressing situation possible to try and get them to hold on, just please hold on." (Remember! Siffrin can remember the contents of Loop's loop backs in the A6 fight!)

But there is the possibility that this happens months, or worse years down the road. One last Loop back. Throw it all away for the chance to just get that one thing you didn't know you even wanted but now know you NEED.

Misc:

Okay miscellaneous time.

This is where I admit that I have a bunch of unfinished NoHats art that I haven't gotten around to yet because I feel like a right tool being so obviously Loop-Centric with my fancontent (I AM . . I REALISE I AM NOT DOING MUCH TO BEAT THE ALLEGATIONS.) So like if people want to see that please say because euaghghghhfh <- the nervous.

one of Sam's mid-game observations that I'm just going to share for no particular reason is that Bonnie's hair shares a bunch of shapes with Siffrin's. The flick up at the top, the 3 pronged shape of the fringe… just something to think about.

Without 2 Siffrins around to compare each other to it'd likely be a lot harder to notice Loop's similarities. Doesn't mean that those similarities don't sting more in this context though.

If you do NoHats without LoopLoops. The concept of this all fading into memory years down the line while they just have slightly-glowy but otherwise regular Siffrin hanging out is fucked up to think about. Just like real grief. Augh

I have this idea and I can't get it out of my head so I am throwing it to the dpxdc tumblr wild.

Danny took a deep breath as he wrapped his left hand. He wrinkled his nose at the blood and grime he smelled over the cigarette smoke and alcohol. He ignored how his hand shook as he secured the end around his wrist. He heard the noise outside the room die down a bit and hopped up from the bench.

Danny ran himself through a few warmups before he heard the noise outside pick back up with an announcement.

"Tonight we have everyone's favorite, Wraith!"

People yelled out their bets and cheered when Danny stepped out into the cage. He blew out a slow breath and watched as the people in the seats above shivered. He kept a carefully blank expression even under the gaiter mask.

When Wraith stepped into his end of the cage he rolled his shoulders back and stared down his first opponent for the night.

Can I take a wild swing at your Childhood friends AU?

I've had a few people reach out and ask if they can write stuff about that AU (or just straight up say they're going to take it without asking, haha..) so I'm gonna answer this one publicly as a blanket answer that's basically "yes"!

I don't own the concept of a childhood friends AU and I'm sure I'm not the first person to think about Usopp & Sanji meeting when they were young, so already I don't feel right telling people they can't take inspo from my AU. And also, I'd love to read more people's takes and interpretations on this AU and sanuso in general!

Sometimes I can be precious about my concepts in case I'd like to work them into my own comics/stories but I think this one is fair game! If you take direct inspiration from my work in your fic then I would appreciate credit/a link back, but like I said, I can't really claim ownership over such a broad concept.

There's a severe lack of coffin sex in the AO3 tags when it comes to the vampire fandoms. I know Hellsing should have it, I think I've read a fic with coffin sex, but it is rare. Hell, Castlevania is also surprisingly lacking. It's surprising. Why the fuck are the vampire fandoms less horny when it comes to coffins, while the fucking Sims and SVSS seem to have it downpat with only one having it with vampires.
