In case anyone in this blog's currently small audience has noticed the my posting frequency for this blog has slowed right down to a halt:
Tbh i would have been posting more but since the whole Tumblr selling us out to Midjourney/AI training, I am kinda nervous/iffy on reposting other people's artworks (makeup) on here.
Tho now that Meta has actually ended up outdoing Tumblr on that front (see news about Meta's recent Privacy Policy update that came into effect 26 June I think it was?), artists'/makeup artists' work on Instagram (where I had been sourcing the existing posts on this blog from) is in just as much danger (if not more) as being replicated in AI results, due to the fact that Meta just straight up made it quite literally impossible to "opt out" in some countries - here in New Zealand, America, who knows where else. The EU is (allegedly) protected due to the stipulation/protection in the EUDP that things like data usage for AI training has to be opted out for users by default - which Meta blatantly ignored and opted everybody in by default, hence the only reason we actually heard about this abuse against our rights.
So yeah in conclusion I'm kinda stuck between a rock and a hard place here: I wanted to share the beautiful works of creators (with credit of course), but I don't want to share another artists' work that leads to their work being scraped for AI/ending up in AI "art" results. And it can be hard to acquire permission for every image you repost, especially with a disability. On the other hand, with the advent of Instagram jumping on the bandwagon of stealing everyone's (and not just artists by profession, regular people's personal posts too! Whatever free content they can exploit from us they will) precious work and posts, it feels like it becomes a bit of a free-for-all anyway where if an artist has their work on Instagram, their work has already been scraped by now anyway?
And I have a lot of these sideblogs laying dormant now. It seems like it could be the somewhat death of curated blogs, since we are msot of us artists who don't want to hurt another artists' IP rights/livelihood.
Any advice? What are other folks who run these kinds of blogs doing?
(Btw i went thru and opted out main and all my sideblogs as soon as i saw the post floating about displaying the Tumblr community's outrage at Tumblr over the change to train AI on our data.)
Btw expecting potential crickets/tumbleweed in response to this post, honestly, as this is my most recently-made and updated sideblog so doesn't have the reach of some of my other ones. I might reblog around my other blogs for reach if i get the spoons #spoonieforlife
#artist issues#artist problems#artists#please advise#help#question#i could alternatively post a poll#asking if fuckyeah blogs and the like (or w/e we are calling them these days - but basically blogs that post to a theme/collection) are dea#or not#makeup artists#artist rights#artists' rights#artists on Tumblr#art on Tumblr

This is big part of the mentality I was referring to and it’s a community killer - No one owes anything to anyone unless it's something paid for.
I think not offering someone that took the time and effort to make art for a fanfiction at least a ‘thank you’ is making them a dick too. Not only if they go out of their way to make the artist feel extra bad for it.
If someone likes a story and makes art for it without the author paying them for it, and spend time and effort and resources (both traditional and digital art implies costs for paper, tools, electricity etc. if you must add the financial part in it) (emotional effort too, I remember how stressed I was the whole process if the author will like it) if they do all that, and the author doesn’t show any appreciation, it will feel terrible. No one wants to feel like that so they will not do it again. I know I won’t. So it doesn’t matter if someone else might like it because no such art will be made again. The feelings towards the author and the story will change negatively as well. Future interactions with other authors might suffer too after such an experience or simply by witnessing this mentality around. It has an inhibitory effect on creative spaces, fandoms, human interactions, self-esteem.
The way you talk makes me wonder if you ever created something yourself? Have you poured yourself into a piece of art of any form? Have you felt the vulnerability of putting that piece of yourself out there in the open not protected by a paywall? For people to bite on it, to hold it gently or pass by it like its nothing? Which of the reactions would you hope for, honestly? Would you truly be ok without a good reaction? Should anyone just continue to pour themselves into pieces and give it to people to cast it aside or rip it to shreds? Can they not take personally something that is basically a comment on a piece of themselves?
I think people do owe others many things like decency, respect, appreciation, especially in a world increasingly individualistic, selfish, rude, where no one owes anything to anyone. I see it as the opposite of self-destruction and unnecessary misery.
I see so many posts encouraging interaction, mostly for fanfiction but also visual art. To leave comments not just kudos or likes, to reblog, to let authors know someone read/saw their work, that they are seen, and appreciated; how doing that will lead to more, how ignoring or being extra rude to them will lead to less. My own post was a reaction to a vehiculating post encouraging cooperation between writers and visual artists, like a symbiotic relationship that apparently used to be more widespread; but also a personal case that still stings.
So overall, writers are feeling unappreciated, and ask for comments and kudos, likes and reblogs (now fanarts too). Someone making a fanart is, in my opinion, on a superior lvl to comments, reblog and such, because of the lvl of involvement and because being shared linked to the story and artist it also serves as some kind of advertisement (for lack of better word). It is a powerful form of mutual support. No one is obligated to love either, it is subjective, it happens or not. But it is a 2 way street. If someone went the extra mile for an author to make them fanart to their writing, they should show some appreciation. They can’t just expect others to appreciate their work, but not owe any appreciation when someone puts in the extra effort. It holds even more value in a world where people don’t think they owe any respect or appreciation, and they are entitled to continuous and free fanfiction and fanart and any kind of "content" (because this is the word to which human expression is reduced to nowadays).
By the same mentality, people don’t owe anyone a “good morning” or “goodbye” or “happy birthday”, any kind of help or kind gesture that they were not paid for, or a kind word in hard times, or sign of courtesy…. but it sure makes life better when they do it, and contributes to well-being and human relationships, because we like it or now, we are a social species, and bound to interact and share spaces.
Someone makes something nice for another person, not because they were asked for or paid for, and they don’t owe them a simple ‘thank you’? Or any kind of appreciation because it doesn’t fall in their category of accepted form of feedback / doesn’t raise to their pretension of skill level / doesn’t meet their fancy / they are not friends or mutuals??
Is there any context where it is ok to make another person feel like shit for daring to make something nice for you, unasked and unpaid?
"Normalize fanart for fanfics again" and then you get
authors that are not ok with fanarts and you have to ask permission first (genuinely curious what happens if you gift one of these people an unprompted art to their writing... get blocked? ostracized? humiliated? what is the sentence?)
fanart not appreciated for diverse reasons, including the skill level, being done in traditional media, manner of representation, level and type of relationship with the author
fanart being treated like an ugly gift for which you are politely thanked for then it goes into obscurity/trash bin
not being able to share if said fanart is nsfw because of the censorship, or having to cut parts/get creative with censoring which makes the piece less attractive and it gets scrolled over
#ivy shitpost#I am kind of sorry for the length of this#but it is all I could think of since I saw the reply#its not about owing someone. it shouldn't be#someone sharing fanfiction and expecting appreciation for it but be ungrateful when someone gives it in the form of fanart sounds wrong

hola isola radiale.
i know i’ve been inactive lately, and there’s a pretty good chance i’ll end up dropping. i’ve been lacking a lot of energy and motivation since school started up again (tiring). but that’s not why i’m here
i want to let you all know about a situation that’s come up recently where paz-mun was the subject of a complaint to the mods which resulted in her membership to isola being revoked. i don’t want to discredit the complaints, but i do take issue with the way this has been handled by both the complainers and the mods. (more under cut)
first off, i want to make it clear that i’m not claiming to be a neutral party here; paz-mun is a dear friend of mine, while the identities of the people complaining are unknown to me. i do want to act as a mediator as much as i can, though. if you have a complaint to make against her but don’t want to confront her directly, i strongly encourage you to contact me here, on twitter, or on discord (twergo #4918). mods are encouraged as well.
the main issue that paz-mun and i have with the actions taken in this case is that she was not given adequate warning or opportunity to change her behavior.
according to paz-mun, only one person approached her with a problem, and she did her best to address it appropriately. the mods, on the other hand, claim to have been contacted by around 10 people. this leaves at least 9 people whose complaints were not directed to paz-mun herself. is it really fair to ask her to change her behavior if she does not even know that it is hurting anyone?
additionally, the mods have not been responsive to paz-mun’s attempts at communication about this matter. after she was given a single warning (for unrelated issues about whether the character followed canon), she requested the opportunity to converse with the mods about this issue. they did not give her this opportunity. instead, they came back with an entirely new complaint, revoking her membership on that basis without a single warning. regardless of the complaint’s legitimacy, this should alarm us. if paz-mun can be targeted in this way without warning or chance to change, any one of us can be subject to similar treatment.
i understand that we all want to take the moral high ground in situations where call-outs or complaints are made, and cultures such as tumblr often encourage direct, decisive action to be taken. however, this is a culture which can be easily abused. call-outs and complaints are intended as a way to warn others about abusers in the community, which paz-mun is not. the complaints do not even claim that her behavior has been abusive.
in fact, the complaints are of behavior which is easily fixed if addressed appropriately. paz-mun’s actions may have been inappropriate for the context; i can’t say one way or another, as i do not know the details of the complaints. what i do know, however, is that she is trying. she genuinely wants to be a part of the community and have fun, positive interactions with the people around her. she simply has not been given enough of a chance to understand the ways she may have upset people. this is why i want to encourage communication and mediate with those who have been hurt.
my end goal with this post is not necessarily to change the ruling, but simply to help resolve the conflicts which were taken above paz-mun’s head before she had the chance to solve them one on one.
i hope that this helps, and again, please contact me if you are among those who have been hurt, or among those who have dealt with these complaints.
thanks for reading!

love that you're talking about how lack of reblogs effected you. I used to write reader inserts for the longest time, probably since 2017, for various fandoms. I used to write weekly when I wasn't super good and cared more about just posting something when I got the idea which then turned into me building ideas with a community of writers through, you guessed it, reblogging. I found friends through writers who were active readers and we'd constantly give feedback to each other. took a break when I started university and when I came back it was really different. I did the same things as I used to do and consistently my only interactions and comments and reblogs on my writing were friends I had made in the writing community. I knew I had readers, I could see it in the likes and the follows, but no one who wasn't also a writer that I knew and also interacted with, interacted with me. I'd get a bunch of likes and next to no reblogs. it's fucking disheartening. I still write occasionally, but I just don't post it anymore. I can't tell you how excited I'd been to post something, how proud I'd been of a piece I'd spent weeks on, written thousands of words for, only to receive silent likes and little to know comments. I was writing for myself but I was posting for everyone else. or when I actively took requests or write ships where people would send in themselves and I'd ship them, and the people that requested would only like it. not even a thank you. it destroys your willingness to share.
I will write regardless, I love writing. I have over a hundred posted fics across various accounts. that doesn't happen just because you want people to praise you or something like that. it happens because you love writing. but I don't owe anyone to post those. I can continue writing and get joy from it. posting it was just an additional way to get joy, it fostered communities and gave you extra motivation. comments on fics made my day even if they were generic or simple, it meant someone enjoyed what I did and wanted me to know, and people can argue that's what likes do but let's be honest, they don't. likes are very quickly done and impersonal. if you take a second to reblog, even if it's just with a heart, it means so much because you decided something we loved creating was worth your attention outside of just content to consume. and a lot of writers like to respond to those comments and engage and share excitement.
anyways, I don't post fics anymore. I still get notifications of people discovering my works and clicking like. I don't think I've gotten a reblog on a fic outside of my first week posting them. there's only so much fellow writers can do to keep you sharing your work. there's only so much a single, regular commenter can do in a see of hundreds of likes.
if I'm not worth your time to comment on my fic, you're not worth my time to post free content for you to consume. that simple
read this, then read it again.
thank you so much for sharing this, love. i'm so sorry you went through this too. i'm sure you're an incredible writer and it's such a loss that the way people have treated you drove you away. i completely agree and i feel so similarly.
i've been posting fanfics since i was around 15 i think and the ratio was 50/50 and not just on tumblr but ao3, fanfiction.net when i still used that. it's not too much to ask that people engage with us, it's really not. and we have every right to not post anymore and just write for ourselves or to share with our friends.
it's good that non-writers see the perspectives of multiple writers on this manner so thank you again for sharing your experiences and if you ever want to chat, my dms are open <3

new quarantine project
(TLDR available at the bottom of this post)
look we got really fuckin screwed with the cursed child thing and then fantastic beasts imo, like I do like the fantastic beasts series but we have been waiting for more marauders content for decades now. so I’ve decided that fuck it, there’s no reason we can’t create it ourselves. we’ve been doing a hell of a job so far on fanfics and headcanons and fanart and every other form of media; why not the full seven book series we deserve?
at this point, it might be a fair judgement that the fandom has done more to build upon the world of the marauders and their relationships than the original series laid the grounds for. more canon content has been produced by rowling since then, but I believe a lot of our imaginings have been shaped by the many ideas that we as a community have come up with. that’s why I’d like to involve the entire hp community in creating this series (essentially crowdsourcing creativity/ideas). seven books for the marauders prequel story is a lot of ground to cover, and while I have a few ideas, I want the final product to truly reflect all the love and originality we’ve been pouring into this series for years.
I won’t disregard canon entirely, as I’ll be drawing on the characters from the marauders era as well as additional details rowling has provided. however, one definite way this series will break some established rules is in its diversity. we deserved to see more characters of color, more lgbtq+ relationships and characters, more fat characters, more disabled characters- we deserved to see everyone represented. this time around, I will do my best to ensure we will.
for one thing, wolfstar (the romantic pairing of remus and sirius) will be prevalent. so much of the fan content created for the marauders era includes this pairing, and while not everyone will agree with its inclusion, I do think there are many members of the community who will appreciate it. I would love any other suggestions for more pairings, whether they be platonic or romantic, lgbtq+ or straight.
really, any and all suggestions are so welcome. right now, my plan is to scroll as far down the hp headcanons and hp meta tags as possible to gather inspiration, as well as dive into the canon material rowling has published and make a list of characters before piecing together a general storyline and establishing character arcs. I’ll post an outline when I think I’ve gathered enough sources and inspiration, but please: at any time, even months down the road from this post, do not be afraid to send in ideas/headcanons. the world of harry potter leaves so much room to be expanded on and explored, there’s always room for more.
it’s also my intention to make at least one (if not more) of the main four characters trans (that being remus, sirius, peter, and james). they all hold great potential as trans characters (trans wolfstar? two teenagers navigating their way through life, romance, and gender, supporting each other through everything? discovering themselves and accepting each other? trying to find fashion that appeals to their taste in the seventies?? things to consider...)
obviously this will take an effect on the story as a whole, and nothing is set in stone quite yet. I do love the idea of gender non-conforming sirius, so whether or not that ends up translating to a nonbinary, agender, or even genderfluid sirius is also up in the air. he’s always hated convention and tradition, and I see no reason for him to not live as authentically as possible once he’s given up on his family. there’s a huge opportunity in his narrative for themes of freedom and self-love, especially as he’s canonically coming from an already unsupportive family.
ideas like these and more will, ultimately, be decided on through community polls and voting. whatever we create, it will be created together. I feel that there’s room here for everyone’s ideas and voices to be heard and respected, so (for example) even if we don’t see trans wolfstar, that doesn’t mean we won’t see two trans partners somewhere else in the story.
the headcanon of desi harry is also popular enough for me to comfortably suggest that james be indian, or at least of some south asian descent. a poll to decide on his ethnicity is currently up, as his heritage and culture will be a large part of his backstory and perspective.
with the overview of my general starting ideas out of the way, please send in any opinions or ideas you have for the series and share this post with anyone you think might want to be involved in the project or who might have ideas of their own. reblogs will help spread the word about this project and get as many creative minds involved as possible! sending me posts, art, or links to fanfic and other materials are also welcome, as well as private messages. I’m also open to including storylines from existing fanfictions, as long as the author is open to including their work and ideas. the series will not be sold or commercialized in any way, but will be free for all to read with the release of each new segment of the story.
thank you so much for reading, polls are now available!
some disclaimers: this is not for profit, nor is it intended to infringe upon the work of j.k. rowling. I won’t be claiming to own these characters, settings, or any ideas or concepts in the harry potter universe. the works created are protected under fair use.
TLDR: this is an idea for a new series of marauders books, following james potter, remus lupin, sirius black, and peter pettigrew. this idea is best supported by sending in suggestions, headcanons, and other ideas, as well as taking the polls and sharing this post. involving other writers and creatives is a large goal for this project!

INK—KATSUKI BAKUGO
prompt: every lie you tell appears on your soulmate’s skin.
what: 1.6k of soulmate fluff in an established relationship.
warnings: none!
He didn't want to meet you.
He didn't want to see the other end of his ink, where the dark lines and curves of his lies find itself before it fades. He didn't want to meet someone who will actually accept him: his "greatness", temper, doubts, and all his flaws.
He didn't want to touch you, so he settled on doubting the concept of soulmates, ignoring the facts that surround him every single day. After all, contradicting what he was scared of is one of the things he had learned to do to cope with the sudden changes in his life.
Yet, he often found himself staring on his skin, waiting for your next lie. He found himself having the urge to know your voice even though he doubts he'll find it unattractive.
In short, he was hooked as expected.
So here he was, by the beach. The evening is near as the air further ruffled his hair, his outfit proving to be useful. The red maroon long-sleeved turtleneck he wore helped in regulating his temperature, even if the winter had little to no effect on him as he stood nervously numb. His dark baggy pants that are hiding a knife somewhere in its pockets contrasted how body hugging his top was. Sighing, his fingers reached for the silver chain necklace around his neck.
He wondered if he overdressed for the occasion.
The sunset was calming to see, the total opposite of his jumble of nerves, his red eyes glowing even if they were cast downwards. He could feel the exhaustion in his bones after going through back to back missions to free up his schedule. The mask and the glasses had tried to hide his identity but failed as people still swarmed around him when they saw his red eyes through the lightly tinted lens.
Not like he was complaining.
Free from the disguise, he stood in front of the bay his old friend had cleaned up for his training, waiting for your arrival.
"Katsuki!" The few people around close enough to hear you looked at him as you waved towards his direction. His hand found its way on his forehead, a tired look on his face as people started to swarm around him again. You acted quickly and grabbed his hand that had started sweating and bolted away, to the street where the two of you were supposed to go eat. Your hand felt warm in his as you dragged him away, laughing at the commotion.
With Bakugo, the press tracking his every move was not new, especially with him being an influencer, a hero at such a young age. You've come to terms with it after loving him for years, recalling the photos they had taken of the two of you on a date or a simple walk. Annoying, but, unexpectedly, tolerable.
"Sorry to keep you waiting. Were you alone for a long time?" He was glad you didn't address the public's attention to him and settled on focusing your eyes on him. He didn't want to upset you but he knew you'd still see through it: first because the blank ink will always find its way on your skin every time he tells a lie, and second, because you know him that well after years of putting up with his nature.
"Yeah, but I didn't mind." The two of you had slowed down, your hand now out of his grasp as you tried to catch your breath. "The sunset was nice anyway."
In the span of five years since he met you, the two of you found yourselves in your own careers, often assigned to separate missions, far even, pursuing your own dreams. The two of you rarely met up now, and the only way to communicate was through calls and texts every night or at every free time you two share. And every time he sees you, the feeling always felt like the first time he sees you in the same high school you attended as him, watching his lies line up in your skin just to check if his eyes were betraying him or not.
"That's great. I was getting worried you'll leave me since you didn't even want to know me at first." He grumbled as you chuckled, lightly tapping his arm as a sign that you were just kidding.
"Well, you couldn't blame me. Soulmates sounded really dumb." The red of the lanterns blended with the hues of his eyes as he looked at your figure, excitedly pointing at every food stall. The month of February was coming to an end so the cold didn't affect him much anymore, but he found himself craving your warmth in many ways than one.
"Everything was dumb for you if it wasn't part of your goal," you jokingly retorted which he snorted at. He couldn't exactly deny that. "What are you spacing out for anyway? You looked, and still do by the way, like a lost Pomeranian." His face scrunched and was about to start yelling at you which you were prepared to laugh at when loud cheerful yells can be heard from the distance. He was clearly unfocused, but is unwilling to tell you about it. A small subtle blush crept up his face with the thought of finally being alone with you after so many months, which he then quickly hid behind the crepes you handed him.
The food park started getting busier, and you thought back to how silent and peaceful the beach was. The bench the two of you sat on proved to be not as secluded as the two of you thought, people looking sideways with giddy smiles and recognition.
"Do you want to go back to the beach?" He looked around subtly, noticing the growing crowd and nodded.
Hand in hand, the two of you walked in comfortable silence sipping on your drinks, only because both of you didn't want people to overhear you. The walk was peaceful, his warm hand anchoring you to safety. That even with the danger of the night, or the two of you probably making the headlines if people recognized you by tomorrow, you felt safe and surrounded only by his familiar caramel scent mixed with the distant salt of the beach. The lanterns slowly disappeared from your peripheral visions, going back to a normally lit street.
Loving Bakugo wasn't a small feat. You remember when the two of you shared the same lies, repeating it as if the two of you wanted to love each other that every lie would turn to a truth.
Maybe that was why the two of you had avoided looking on each other's skin for months, getting to know and bonding over nothing without the influence of the dark ink.
Maybe that was why the two of you refused to exchange i love you's later, opting to show each other's affection in other ways then seeing the remnants of the three words like a faded tattoo with a dejected look on both your faces.
This time, the evening has fallen over the beach, the dark veil of stars reflected over the waves instead of the pink and orange hues when he was waiting. The stars shone brightly, the moon unseen, blended into the night. He gazed at your figure as he wordlessly stopped, letting you walk in front of him, and gave into his urge, wrapping his arms around you from behind and burying himself in your scent, in your familiar warmth.
"I missed you."
You stood there in petrified silence before melting in his arms, understanding, contentment, love and warmth flooding your senses.
"I missed you too."
His eyes willed you to drown in his scarlet petals as the two of you wordlessly swayed to his rough hums, his rough tune blending with your own notes. Strangely, it was a pleasant melody; not the best, yet, the softness behind them seemed fitting for the night's ambience.
The stars gazed at the two of you as if you were the only people in the world, but he could care less about the stars.
You were the only light in his eyes.
He didn't want to meet you, to damage such a dream for him, but right now, he knew he didn't want to lose you, spilling pure moonlight instead of the night dark ink of both your lies.

there for you
edogawa ranpo x f!reader
fandom: bungou stray dogs
content: hurt/comfort
type of work: one-shot
synopsis: he’s had a bad day, and honestly? at the end of the day, he just wants to be held by you
author’s note: i finished reading bsd volume 14 (ch. 55-58) a couple days ago and im sad so i wrote this bc i want to give one of my babies some love bc he needs and deserves it
but no worries! this is spoiler free! it’s not related to the chapters at all
Your boyfriend is an egotistical man who can be rude, selfish, and unconcerned in most situations.
But it didn’t mean he didn’t care.
Ranpo loves his job, even if he complained that there were no interesting cases to get involved in or that he was too lazy to work.
He loves his friends, his family, even if he’s not the best at communicating with them or if he doesn’t tell them out right.
The development of the agency gave him a father figure, a loving and beautiful girlfriend, people he could call his siblings, people who looked up to him and trusted him with all of their being.
And that’s exactly the reason why he currently feels like absolute shit.
A couple months prior, the agency busted a group for drug and human trafficking.
Turns out, there were retired colleagues who witnessed the bust down. They watched their juniors fall into custody at the mercy of the agency.
The sudden attack caught the ADA completely off guard.
Not even Dazai saw it coming.
Currently, you were at home after the attack resting on the couch wrapped in a blanket and with a cup of warm tea in your hands.
It was way past dinner, and you were just waiting for your boyfriend to come home.
Ranpo wasn’t present when the attack had initially happened, but you and the rest of the agency met up with him at the hospital.
During the attack, the group had used a dangerous gas they had made along with machine guns.
Fortunately, you and a lot of the other staff and detectives only escaped with a couple of grazes and a nasty headache as you were all towards the back of the room and able to cover your noses and mouths quickly at the sight of the gas.
But Atsushi, Kyouka, and Dazai weren’t so lucky.
The three got the worst of the attack as they were the closest to the door and breathed in the most gas.
From the intel you all had learned later, the gas that was used in the attacks makes you dizzy, nauseous and causes immense body pain, attacking your inner organs.
They were unable to defend themselves properly; their bodies shut down almost immediately with the amount of gas that was now in their system.
Not to mention, their wounds from the bullets.
Fortunately, their wounds being fatal, Yosano was able to heal them, and even the effects from the gas were gone.
Except for Dazai.
Thou Shalt Not Die would have no affect on him for No Longer Human would only nullify it.
Dazai was rushed to hospital and put into emergency surgery; and a couple hours later, was put in the ICU where he still is now.
You take a peak at the clock on the wall.
10:37
It’s been hours since Dazai was put into the ICU, and hours since you left the hospital with your boyfriend’s encouragement and boss’s order.
You frown for you haven’t been informed of any updates regarding your hospitalized friend and that your lover hasn’t arrived yet.
It was unusual behavior for him as he never stayed longer than absolutely necessary—similar to Dazai—because as a clerk, you never had to stay for long hours like the front line agents.
It was even weirder now seeing as you—along with the other clerks—were dismissed from work early by Fukuzawa.
You pick up your phone to call Ranpo but you hear the door unlock and you immediately get up from the couch to meet your lover.
The moment he’s in your field of vision, you refrain from letting out a gasp.
Tired eyes was not a sight you would’ve ever pictured on your boyfriend.
Earlier, you were informed by two of your younger juniors—Atsushi and Tanizaki—that shortly after you and the other clerks had left the hospital, they’ve been on the hunt for the antidote to help treat Dazai.
Last you heard, it wasn’t going so well.
They couldn’t interrogate the group that had attacked as they had committed suicide in police custody via cyanide pills and all the other leads led to dead ends.
Even your boyfriend drew blanks.
It was obvious to you that he was frustrated with himself and the whole situation.
It was evident on the look of your boyfriend’s face; he felt defeated.
You don’t think you’ve ever seen him this shut down since Shachou was under the virus ability.
Your boyfriend locks the door, turns back to you and you walk over to him slowly, taking his hands and placing it on your cheeks, effectively holding it there.
With no words exchanged between the two of you, he rubs his thumbs across your cheeks with an uncharacteristic amount of gentleness.
With you still holding your hands against your face, he whisper softly to him, “How’s Dazai?”
He sighs before removing his hands from your grasp and instead pulls your head towards his chest, leaving it there.
“Still unconscious.”
You hum in acknowledgment, and you pull away from him, opting to intertwine both his hands with yours.
“I feel like shit.”
“You shouldn’t.”
You look up at his bright emerald green eyes, and he stares right into your bright (e/c) ones.
It’s not often his friends see the childish male with his eyes wide open, but in intimate moments like these—even the small ones—he has always had his eyes open.
With frustration in his voice he sighs, “I should’ve seen that coming. It was so fucking obvious.”
You gently rub your thumbs over the top of his palms and you softly try to comfort your boyfriend.
“There’s nothing we can do about it now; it’s already happened.”
He squeezes your hands tightly, as if you’re about to disappear right in front of him.
“You got hurt, and so did everyone else.”
You slip out one hand to caress his cheek, soothingly you whisper to him, “I’m okay, I’m right here. I’m still here with you.”
The twenty-six year old leans into your touch closing his eyes trying to calm himself down.
“The others are okay too, we didn’t get hurt too badly. Dazai will be okay too.”
Slightly scowling, frustration seeps back into his voice.
“I couldn’t even find the damn antidote.”
Knowing words wouldn’t be any help to your detective boyfriend, you lean in and the both of you share a soft kiss.
You pull away, and look at each other before Ranpo leans in and captures your lips once more.
This time, the kiss is more desperate, yet gentle; the stress of the day’s events evident, but he also kisses you as if you’d break at his touch, as if you’re about to fade away from him.
After a few minutes, you and Ranpo break away and the two of you let out short heavy breaths and you realize your hands are entangled in his hair and his hands cupped around your face.
You lean into his touch and you stare into his green orbs; his eyes still swimming with stress.
Once again rubbing his thumbs against your cheeks, he whispers to you so softly, you almost miss it.
“I think I just need a hug.”
Without hesitation, you stand on your tiptoes, reach up and engulf your boyfriend in a tight hug; your arms wrapped around his neck and his arms naturally finding themselves around your back.
You kiss your boyfriend’s shoulder and the two of slowly sway side to side; both of you glad to be in the other’s presence and glad to be able to share this intimate moment.
With his face buried into your shoulder, he closes his eyes and breathes in your scent only for him to realize you’re wearing one of his shirts.
He smiles ever so slightly and quickly pecks your exposed neck.
The master detective relishes in your warmth and melts at your touch.
He doesn’t think, no, he knows he can’t feel more at home with anyone or anywhere else.
You’re the person he can break down all his walls for, the person he’d fight for, the person he would love for all of eternity.
For every moment, big or little, happy or sad you’re right there with him.
You’re more than just his girlfriend; you’re his support system, his life, his home; much more than he’d consider the ADA to be.
He knows he might not deserve you; he can be an ass, he knows that, but he’ll never let you go; he’ll never let anything take you away.
He holds you tighter against him and presses a kiss to your shoulder before letting out a faint whisper.
“I cherish you above anything else in my life. I love you.”
“I will always be there for you, Ranpo. I love you too.”

AN: Took a while but here’s chapter six! Make sure to reblog and like, or leave comments and kudos on AO3, which is still the best place to read it.
Title: The Ripple Effect
Characters: Hordak and Entrapta, feat. Glimmer, Bow, Aurora and Eon (OCs)
Rating: M (for smut)
Repairing Harm Done
Hordak walks through the center of their new home away from home. Entrapta and he share their enjoyment of space, and going on adventures with her has been some of the greatest years of his life; however, Beast Island has been transformed into a multicultural landscape, where anyone could come here if they wanted, and stay here if they chose. While Odessa has been away with her friends, they opted to expand the lodgings here to accommodate growing numbers. Talon and he weren’t the only ones with children, and even without offspring, his siblings were finding life partners, and to add on top of that, visitors from nearby planets come to Etheria as well and, sometimes, like it so much they wish to remain.
Upon this realization, they made an organization to discuss blueprints, schedules and funding for such a project. The funding was no issue: Glimmer and Bow were more than happy to aid them, and have visited the island several times now to see what else was needed. It wasn’t necessarily money they needed, either, as everything on Beast Island was based on a trade system and very loosely; they have utilized the technology on the island well, and created elaborate new machines for daily living. Glimmer and Bow, simply put, love being involved. They offer their expertise, Bow on his own inventions and Glimmer with her magic, but they were enthusiastic to be present at all.
He notes his brothers above him in the trees, connecting large trunks with man-made bridges, where a community of apartments will be launched high above them. The groves are to be interconnected this way, allowing for more freedom of development and making use of every inch of the island, eventually establishing long pathways that will join all shores of the island. This will be the new dwelling place for many of the citizens on Beast Island, while the area he’s moving through will serve as the marketplace, with recreational centers, hospitals, schools and restaurants lined throughout the ground floor. They have been constructing it for a while, but high demand has allowed for a speedier process to take place. Underground it will be primarily used for laboratories, as he and Odessa have the largest ones. It’s also their excavation site for First Ones tech, which they still continue to find more than twenty years later, the deeper into the earth they go; it’ll also serve as their mausoleum, for when those days come.
Animals chirp in the branches, shadows moving along his frame. Looking up, he meets the eyes of his brothers hammering boards into place, and they wave down at him. Being in a good mood, he waves back—
A sharp pang goes up his shoulder. Wincing in surprise, Hordak holds his hand up for a moment. Confused, he shakes off the sensation and continues toward the direction of his residence. Opening the door, Hordak steps inside.
“Entrapta? I’ve returned,” Hordak announces.
No answer.
She must be out. Maybe he’ll go check up on Emily and Imp. The latter has been growing, which came as a surprise to everyone. No one believed Imp could actually get bigger. It’s about the time Imp needs to have tests run to check if he’s still healthy as his body develops, Hordak muses, beginning to climb up the steps—
His legs suddenly lock, and they buckle, causing him to sprawl on the floor. His palms and knees slam into the hard stone, sending waves of pain up his frame. Another shortly follows, stabbing through his body. And it’s never one type of stab—it’s sharp, a knife slashing through; or painfully dull, akin to being jabbed with a worn, flat spear. It may not cut, but it’s relentless. And he can’t ever tell which is worse.
Trying to stand, he finds himself unable to. He pushes up with his hands, and the pain stings up his nerves, all the way to his neck.
Hordak lets out a breath of shock, of anger, of fear.
No.
No no no no no no no—
He looks down at his hands, and the color recedes—the blue drains, melting from elbow down, streaks forming along his wrist, and he can feel them weaken at the shoulder.
Hordak yells out loud, hunched over from the agony, watching as his forearms split in two without warning right down the middle until they’re merely the width of bone within the muscles thinning blood flow slowing unable to move or feel or sense or know why—
Hordak lets out a cry of shock, jolting himself up. Breathing hard, he turns to his right. Moonlight cuts through the dark of his bedroom, the blinds never being tightly sealed enough for his liking. But for once, he’s relieved to see it.
His head falls into his hands, and he breathes in. Breathes out. He withdraws to look at them. His forearms show no signs of disease, stark in the dim room. His shoulders move as they should, and he rotates them to be sure. He claws the air with his fingers, two quick movements. Then he lets them go toward his palm, slowly, pinky first as the rest follow, moving in synchronicity. He repeats this motion four more times, and none of them hurt.
Entrapta shifts beside him, her arm reaching out for his body. Automatic. When she finds only the pillow, Entrapta opens her eyes. She props herself up on an elbow, reaching out to touch her husband.
“Hordak? Are you okay?”
Blinking, Hordak turns to look at her. Her hair is loose about her body, draping across her shoulders in long strands. She doesn’t wear clothes to bed, finding it more comfortable. She followed his example on that one. After decades of being in pain, he didn’t want to be constricted as he slept. It reminded him too much of how often he had to be bound in place by something or another to keep from falling apart. His body was attached by sinew and muscle, like anyone else, but it never felt like that. It always felt like one small gesture would render him incapacitated, and his shoulders would fall from their sockets.
Entrapta sits up, touching the small of his back, “Did you have a bad dream?”
Hordak sighs, “I… did.”
Entrapta brushes the side of his face, “Do you want to talk about it?”
Hordak reaches up to take her hand in his, “It… It was the usual dream.”
Sidling next to him, Entrapta lays her head on his shoulder, “I know. It’s scary.”
He lets out a breath, unable to disagree. Adora had fixed him, permanently, in that other lifetime. Horde Prime wouldn’t allow something defective in his midst, so his body had been healed at the expense of his mind’s free will. But when Adora expelled Prime out, he was released from the confines of both mental and physical anguish.
He knows this.
His body has not known that pain in many, many years.
But there are days when he’s walking, sitting, breathing, and his thoughts turn to anxiety. Anxiety about the day, the moment, when his body will fail him again. He exercises every day, relishing in the activity he had been denied. The strength and power and agility that he long forgot about and wishes to keep. He makes sure to have that routine set out for himself, to have those thoughts at bay, to stop worrying him. He recalls how nervous he’d been when Odessa had been born—to have his daughter in his arms, and he would panic about the pain coming back and he can’t grab her in time before she collapses onto the floor and she dies. In a second, just like that.
Pulling his knees up, Hordak stretches his arms out onto them, giving a heavy sigh.
Entrapta rotates a bit, brushing his hair out.
“Entrapta?”
“Yes?”
“Can you check?”
Without further question, Entrapta moves forward, inspecting his back first. She notes the perfect coloration of his body, from neck to fingertip. Drawing aside the covers, she makes similar mental notes from his hips down to his feet. She looks up at him, smiling, “You’ve never looked better!”
Hordak sighs, relieved.
Entrapta lays her cheek on his forearm, “And I do mean that.”
He meets her eyes, and she wiggles her eyebrows.
Hordak laughs, allowing the anxiety to leave him, “You’re a pervert.”
Entrapta’s grin widens, “Can you blame me?”
Hordak leans forward to kiss her forehead. And she tilts her head back so their mouths can touch. Her hand caresses the side of his cheek, and he relaxes.
“I didn’t mean to wake you up,” he whispers, after a good while.
“Don’t worry about it,” Entrapta says. She pushes him onto his back, brushing her thumb along his mouth. “You’re not alone, you know.”
Hordak nods, staring up at the ceiling. Entrapta lays next to him, and she taps her chest.
Without a word, he turns, burying his face into her collarbone. Warm and inviting.
Her hands play with his hair, humming quietly. Stroking her fingertips down his neck, careful of the port located there. Entrapta doesn’t stop until he’s taking measured breaths, long and deep; once he does, only then does she fall back asleep.
-
Hordak steps out into the bright outdoors. Everything is in place. From the new construction in the trees, to the bustling shoppers around him, and, below, he knows Imp and Emily are taking ownership of Odessa’s lab while she’s away, as they tend to when she’s absent. Her friends are missed as well, and he will admit to himself, it’s good for her to have them.
Tristan’s general apathy tends to keep him anchored, but it lifts away as soon as he knows she’s back home, becoming more involved and energetic. Hydrangea’s eagerness to keep peace always stays in place, but she defers to Odessa’s knowledge and skill more often than with anyone else. Hordak knows that there could be no better allies to his daughter than those two.
They’ve been her friends since childhood, and they gravitated toward one another in a manner he found interesting. Despite being born a clone, he knows who he is, and he tends to keep to himself, save for Entrapta’s presence. His brothers tend to be more gregarious, which baffled him at first on how willing they were to interact with Etherians, and he surmised that, even among replicas, he stands out as incredibly reclusive. There are a few who took to his more stern and introverted nature, of course, he isn’t unique to averting social events, but he continues to have the shortest temper, if pushed enough, and is withdrawn. Talon is one of those individuals to match it, as he tends to be around his wife alone, but he doesn’t mind the spotlight, and that’s their difference.
Hordak’s gotten better at being around others, but he finds it exhausting after a while. Entrapta says that’s okay, and she wouldn’t change that about him and has outright stated to prefer it. Large groups are only ‘fun’ to watch, not be part of.
Odessa, meanwhile, enjoyed company, and Tristan was the first person she brought home. Hydrangea and Odessa liked each other very much, which delighted Entrapta and Scorpia; however, Tristan’s addition caught them by surprise. Mermista wasn’t the warmest woman when it came to who associated with her son. Hordak knows that his actions from the past were to blame, but she hasn’t done anything to damage his child’s relationship with her companion, so he says nothing.
Hydrangea’s mother, Perfuma, is no different, though she tends to have a lenient grip. Which he knows is due to her bohemian attitude, rather than an acceptance of Odessa. She wouldn’t stifle her child, as she has asserted that children should be allowed to do as they please and grow up how they will. It’s not a sentiment he disagrees with—he gave Odessa all the freedom she wanted. Entrapta was the one to spoil her, and he took on the disciplinarian role, for when it needed to be done, but overall, he and his wife encouraged Odessa’s desire to do what she wanted. Sometimes, her strong personality could be overpowering for others, but she’s not a bad person.
Despite what others may think.
“How are you doing, hon?” Entrapta asks, getting up to his level.
I’m doing fine,” he responds. “Did you need something from me?”
“No,” Entrapta smiles. “You always ask that.”
“Ask what?”
“If people need something from you.”
He pauses in his tracks, “Do I?”
“You usually ask that when I’m looking at you, or wondering how you are,” Entrapta states. “And when I say people, I mean just me. You don’t do it with others.”
Hordak looks at the ground, silent.
“That’s not a problem, Hordak! It’s an observation,” Entrapta assures him.
He doesn’t question it further, for now.
“Oh, hi, guys!” Entrapta says.
Hordak faces behind him, finding Glimmer and Bow waving at him. For a flash of a second, he’s stricken with concern, but remembers that they’re supposed to be here today. That must be why they were in his dream, and it has nothing to do with premonitions of impending doom.
“Hey! Hope we’re not late,” Bow says.
“You’re right on time!” Entrapta replies.
Glimmer smiles, “Good! I hope you don’t mind—we brought Aurora today.”
Hordak looks past them, their daughter standing near the portal. Utterly disinterested. Without thinking, he says to Glimmer, “Was it wise to bring her?”
She looks at him, surprised, before waving her hand and laughing, “Oh, Hordak, she’s fine! She’s a big girl. Aurora, come here please!”
Aurora’s expression belies her unwillingness to be present, a polite smile on her face.
He doesn’t want to be rude— Well, that’s not true, he wants to be rude. It just isn’t prudent. Aurora isn’t a person who tends to be engrossed in what’s going outside of her social circle.
Glimmer looks up at Hordak, “I brought her because as future queen, she needs to participate in what’s happening throughout Etheria. You and I are working on this together, so I figured she would benefit from learning how things work with other kingdoms outside of a council meeting!”
Hordak nods in understanding. Makes sense.
Entrapta looks at Aurora, “Hello!”
“Thank you for welcoming me,” Aurora curtsies.
“What’s first on the agenda?” Bow asks.
Entrapta laughs, “We’ll go up into the trees first! We’ve designed a mode of transportation that takes us all to the top!”
Hordak silently walks behind the group. Entrapta leads them to a lift that operates when people enter into the rectangular container, made of nearby materials, predominantly the wood and bark of trees, as they’re the sturdiest thing at the moment. It’s in its rudimentary stage, Entrapta explains, and hopefully it will be changed into solid metal soon, since they didn’t want to waste resources at once. They had to see if it worked first, and they needed to design a glass case to hold it. All of them are elevated toward the top, allowing them a view of everything below.
Glimmer looks over the side of the box, “Wow, where did you come up with the idea?”
“Remember Horde Prime’s ship? He had this sort of thing aboard. We figured it would help get people around easier,” Entrapta says.
“So, you took the contraption of someone deplorable and used it for yourself?” Aurora asks.
“Yep!” Entrapta says.
Glimmer stares at her child, and Bow’s brows rise an inch.
Hordak’s arms remain folded, glaring at the back of Aurora’s head. Not liking her tone.
She doesn’t approve of it. And while he may not like owing Prime anything, it isn’t conducive to advancement as a group to ignore advantages simply because it came from a heinous individual. Good people have bad ideas, and bad people have good ideas, it depends on how it’s used.
“I don’t see how this is sensible of your time,” Aurora says.
Entrapta laughs, “Not everyone can teleport like you and your mom! We have people who can’t jump and climb the way we can.”
Aurora gives a delicate sniff, unimpressed with the explanation.
Glimmer claps her hands together, “Well, I think it’s a phenomenal idea. Prime was a monster, but his ship was incredible.”
“Mama—” Aurora begins.
Bow points at the distant grove, “Oh, look, pookas! Aurora, these were the animals that I met with Adora while looking for Entrapta.”
“The very things that would’ve eaten you all, and my grandpa, alive. You don’t say,” Aurora dryly answers.
“They’re friendly now!” Entrapta corrects, hair morphing into a hand with a forefinger pointed up.
Aurora grimaces when a pooka chitters at her, stepping away.
Hordak comes forward, unable to deal with it any longer, “Perhaps, it would be better for Aurora if she went and explored on her own. There is a plethora of activity in the market, and the main thing we would all be discussing is infrastructure.”
Bow turns to him, “Oh, I don’t think it’s necessary for her to leave.”
Glimmer nods, his suggestion more than welcome, “Actually, he might be right. Sweetie, why don’t you go down and check things out?”
“Thank you, I will,” Aurora says, giving another polite smile. With that, she teleports to the ground.
Entrapta yells over the side, “Byyyeeee!”
Bow and Glimmer share a long glance at one another. Aurora is a pleasant young woman, and now at eighteen, she should be engaging with more outside of Bright Moon. Neither Glimmer or Bow could imagine not wanting to go out of their comfort zone, whether it’s irritating or boring. But Aurora had never been quite as easy with ventures toward the unfamiliar.
Aurora is a creature of habit and routine, so she tends to stick with people that she knows, which is why they gave Marlena and Clawdeen the day off, both to allow Aurora to expand her horizons on her own, while giving their goddaughters well-deserved rest. Adora and Catra serve, too, as Aurora’s respective godparents, for they had all promised to be the guardians of each other’s children. And it’s why they decided, when Aurora asked if she could visit her extended family on the outskirts of the Whispering Woods, they pushed her to join them on this trip to Beast Island.
Aurora’s behavior since arrival was troubling Glimmer; she’s sure it wasn’t obvious, but her daughter radiated displeasure. Aurora is normally so genteel, with impeccable manners, which were inherited from Angella, and nurtured more by Bow and his relatives. Glimmer, even as she gets older, could never get rid of her fire to engage with every little aspect of life as much as she could. There was so much to do and see and experience, and she likes to believe that Aurora’s the same, even with her personality being softer than her own: mellow, caring, even shy. She knows her daughter is a good person.
Everyone always says so.
Bow and Entrapta have gone ahead, chatting animatedly about inventions and the latest in revolutionary designs. Addressing Hordak, Glimmer murmurs, “I’m sorry about Aurora.”
Hordak looks at her, “I don’t see the need for an apology. She doesn’t have to hide her disdain.”
Glimmer pokes him lightly in the arm, teasing, “Why? Because you’re the same?”
“Exactly,” Hordak replies, giving a light chuckle.
Sighing, she holds up her face with her hand, “Still, I don’t know why she’s upset today. I know kids don’t like to be with their parents after a certain age, and want to be with their friends—I was definitely that way—but I thought maybe she would have fun, you know? Engaging with the people, the mix of culture. Beast Island is so grand now!”
“I’m glad to hear you approve of what we’ve accomplished thus far,” Hordak says.
“That lift contraption is useful, but nothing will ever overshadow the day we got indoor plumbing in the palace.”
Hordak smiles, letting himself relax in the easy conversation.
-
Aurora walks through the throng of individuals bustling around. She didn’t expect so… many clones. She knows this is one preferred habitation, along with the kingdom of Dryl, and they are sporadic in other parts of Etheria. But to have so many of them present is a sight to behold.
She doesn’t approach any of the shops, but watches closely. Etherians, too, are wandering from stall to stall, store to store, and she ponders why any of these citizens would want to leave their kingdoms. Do their leaders not provide enough for them that they feel the need to come to a place still in development? She has heard of Beast Island’s many, many changes from childhood to adulthood, but she doesn’t see the appeal of coming to a location that isn’t as established as the rest of Etheria. New Chelicerata is an exception, since restoring a ruined kingdom isn’t a simple task, and that was in no part thanks to the Horde destroying the land and water.
To add on top of that, Aurora notes the strange carts being driven around the area. Compact metal transportation vehicles that are hovering above the ground, or whizzing through the canopy. An invention from Entrapta, no doubt. She tends to be the mind behind the majority of the designs. Those cannot possibly be safe.
Aurora treads lightly along the ground, a little dash of levitation magic that she’s been practicing. A gaggle of children, both Etherian and mixed, run past her, and she sidesteps out of the way. None of them are paying attention to where they’re running, almost doing the same to a couple of people. She quietly shames their parents for not teaching them respect better.
“Hey! You all have to slow down!”
She recognizes the voice, stopping in her tracks.
“Aww, but we wanna run!” chime youthful voices of reckless abandon.
Her eyes shift back and forth from either side, not risking looking behind herself, wondering if she can slip into a nearby building.
“You want to run? Go that way into the woods and return after a while. Whoever’s fastest wins and gets bragging rights.”
“What if one of us gets lost?”
For a moment, she wonders if she could master the invisibility spell this very second—
“Your parents didn’t tell you, but that’s the price of being fools running around without a care: you didn’t get to learn map reading. It’s a curse, so it’s inevitable you’ll die in the jungle.”
The children laugh, “What? No way!”
As the conversation turns to protest, Aurora darts behind a wall, letting out a breath. Crisis averted.
“You know, I heard that if you run like mad back to your homes, and don’t get lost, the curse is lifted! But you can only try when the moon’s half full.”
A gasp comes from one of the children, “Oh my gosh! It’s half full tonight!”
“I guess you kids better practice for this evening!”
Aurora peers around the corner, listening to the children fall for the outlandish lies, while unable to see anyone.
She’s startled when the next sound is that of quick steps coming her direction, darting past her—
Instinctively, she teleports, narrowly avoiding collision with a child. She closes her eyes and sighs.
Why can’t she go home?
“Aurora? What are you doing here?”
She tenses.
She didn’t plan where she’d wind up.
Slowly, Aurora tilts back her head, giving her signature smile, “Eon. I didn’t expect to see you.”
Peering down, Eon quirks a single brow, “You didn’t expect to see me where my family is? Do you not know how visitation works?”
Aurora withdraws, realizing with embarrassment how her head had been resting on his chest. He stands there, nonchalant, several stacks of flour levitating above his palm. He wears Mystacoran attire, deep, noble colors of purple with the usual white or gold accents replaced with his signature black.
Standing out as much as her, if she’ll admit anything. She attends any event wearing dresses, colored soft pink with whites trimming her sleeves and the hem of her skirt. She smoothes out her outfit, looking at the fabric, “I know how visitation works. Normally, you’re locked up in your room.” She side-eyes him. “Doing nothing to better yourself.”
Eon gives a cocky grin, “At least I don’t fake being busy to drown out the monotony enveloping my life.”
Decorum be damned, Aurora’s expression turns mocking, “I happen to like monotony. Schedules keep things together.”
“Another way of declaring you’re uptight,” Eon retorts, sauntering past her.
Aurora emits a light scoff, teleporting beside him, “I am not uptight! I appear that way to the lethargic. It wouldn’t hurt you to make an effort.”
“Oh, I’m sorry, Your Highness,” Eon replies, spinning on the ball of his foot and giving a small bow with his head. “I forgot that commoners like myself need your example to show us how we could improve ourselves.”
Aurora tosses back her hair, “That’s part of being a princess—leading by example.”
Eon rolls his eyes, continuing his path, “Of course. I wouldn’t want to contradict you.”
“But I would contradict you,” Aurora replies. “I don’t understand why you’re carrying the sacks like that.”
“Like what?”
“Magic isn’t something to do menial tasks with. Did your muscles atrophy from being bedridden?”
“I happen to enjoy using my magic for all my needs,” Eon says. “If it makes things easier, why not do it?”
Aurora shakes her head.
“So, what are you on the island for? Did your family finally admit you were found among the beetles, and that’s why you have those wings?”
“Are you insinuating I’m a pest?” she questions, annoyed, folding her arms.
“Beetles happen to serve a very good purpose,” Eon tells her. “I wouldn’t imply such malicious concepts about you.”
Aurora gives him a pointed glare, “If you must know, I happen to be tagging along with my parents. They wanted to check on how construction is going for your people.”
“Ah. That’s nice,” he says, sincere.
“For you, maybe.”
Eon resumes being distant, “Well, I thank you for showing you care. Your presence graces us.”
“I suppose this will do as I’m waiting for them to be done,” she replies, looking around with annoyance.
Eon stops in front of his destination, setting the cargo carefully on the ground. He waves at an uncle, who nods his thanks before continuing to help a customer.
“Why don’t you take it inside?” Aurora asks.
“They know where it is.”
“It’s nicer to put it inside,” Aurora insists.
Eon grunts in annoyance. Levitating them back up, he goes around the corner. He halts, turning to her, hiking a thumb in his new direction, “Are you coming?”
Blinking, Aurora glances behind him. “This job doesn’t require two people.”
Eon leaves the sacks floating, pivoting around, “If you’re going to make demands of me, the least you can do is watch me do it.”
“But—”
He gestures to the building, “Would you rather loiter outside this public establishment?”
Aurora concedes, following him to the back door. She supposes it’s better than being out in the open.
-
Hordak lets his mind wander as his companions take rein of the conversation.
The nightmare threw him off more than he’d care to admit. He has had this sort of dream before, however, he was shaken to his core with this one. It was the most vivid he had ever experienced, and an aspect of slumber he’d care to not go through again.
Bow and Glimmer head to a group of his brothers who are in the midst of adding beams together.
He took it upon himself to take a break in a home that was under development. It needs a little more work left, but it’s otherwise complete and ready for furnishing. No one will bother him here.
Entrapta looks into the house, noticing his posture. He’s staring out a window that overlooks the trees, the drop going straight down, hands behind his back. His thinking position. She swings over to where he stands, closing the door behind her, “Are you still holding up?”
Hordak’s brow twitches. He doesn’t tell her that it’s a poor choice of words, because he knows he’s a little more sensitive to this matter than usual.
But Entrapta touches his shoulder, “Oh, I’m sorry! I meant to ask if you’re fine.”
“That is not something you need to concern yourself with. They’re mere words.”
“Words that are insensitive,” Entrapta replies. He doesn’t give a reply. She sits on her hair, gazing right at him. Unmoving.
Hordak’s eyes flick over to her for a second. He continues to stare straight ahead. “Entrapta, you needn’t apologize or feel responsible.”
“I believe you when you say that,” Entrapta says, not removing her eyes from his features. Suddenly, she gives a bashful smile, “I just care about you.”
Heart twinging, Hordak stiffens. He knows that her concern is sincere, and he appreciates it. He raises a hand to her cheek, brushing it, “I know.”
Entrapta flushes, his gaze intense. She can’t help but look down then, soft giggles leaving her lips. His finger traces the shell of her ear, and a shudder snakes along her spine. Body growing warm from the attention. He always knew how to make her feel special. After Prime’s defeat, Hordak had layers of emotion to sift through. He had been angry for many years, and she knows there’s parts of that residual rage underneath the calm. But one aspect of his nature that blossomed was a sensitivity that left her speechless. Hordak doesn’t believe it, but he can be very romantic by simply being honest with her.
“Hordak,” Entrapta whispers, touching his hand.
He tilts his head, “Yes?”
“You know I love you,” she says.
“Yes, I do,” Hordak replies, surprised. “And I love you too.”
Entrapta gives a breathy laugh, turning her face into his palm, hiding. She peers up at him with one eye, “Really?”
“More than you could comprehend,” Hordak tells the truth.
“Aww!” she coos, pressing his hand into her cheek, slightly muffled as she buries her face into his palm again.
A light blush tints his face, and he gives a soft laugh, “Entrapta, what’s this about? Are you upset that you cannot help me with my problem?”
“A little,” Entrapta holds his hand in hers, kissing the inside of his wrist. “I don’t know what to do sometimes, and I don’t know if me being around helps at all.”
“You’re a great help,” he assures her, thumb stroking her cheekbone. “Don’t doubt your affect on me.”
Entrapta grins, “I know some of the ways I affect you, silly!”
Hordak steps closer, smile widening along his lips, teeth flashing. His voice lowers, “Do you?”
“I like to think so,” Entrapta teases, wrapping her arms around his shoulders, fingers moving into his hair.
Her lips touch his, and he pulls her close. Her body curves against his, and even after decades of being near her, he’s always amazed at how she feels. Hand angled behind her head, his other one shifts down her back, sliding down her thigh.
Entrapta moans into his mouth, and she realizes that she’s been wanting to do this all day. His breathing grows ragged, moans interspersed with her name, sounds that she never gets tired of, because he only makes them with her.
Hordak pushes her against the wall, and he feels her hair slacken through her frame. Her legs wrap around his waist, allowing herself to be held up by his hands. Entrapta gives a soft groan, pulling him close. Her mouth caresses his neck, causing his body to shiver. Her hands glide down his back, grazing over exposed skin.
His hand snakes up her frame, and angles between her legs. Against the fabric, he begins to rub her clit, and Entrapta gasps in welcome surprise. Grinding against his fingers, she gives a small bite to his ear lobe, hot breath tickling his skin.
Hordak presses harder with his fingers, and he knows she’s growing damp. He captures her mouth with his, swallowing a moan she emits, flushed and excited. She grins against his chin, giving a small chuckle.
Encouraged, Hordak stops petting her. He looks at her, “Entrapta, remove your clothes.”
“Ooooh!” Entrapta does as he says, discarding everything but her shirt.
With ease, he lifts her back up, pushing her securely upon the wall and placing her legs over his shoulders. He has no hesitation as he leans in, breathing in, and glides his tongue up slick folds, rubbing over the clit with the end of his tongue.
Entrapta gasps, closing her eyes in pleasure. His tongue moves slowly, taking his time. It moves through the sides, around, teasing the clit, but never going in. Entrapta’s hands caress his hair, brushing through dark blue locks. His moans vibrate into her skin, mouth burning hot on burning flesh.
Hordak’s tongue suddenly darts in, and Entrapta’s back arches, mouth parting open. Groaning deep in her throat, Entrapta’s fingers grip his hair harder. Hordak pushes her legs further aside, nails digging into tender skin. He pulls away, giving her a brief glance, as his teeth graze along the delicate skin of her inner thigh.
“Hordak…” Entrapta whispers.
“Hmm?” he hums, mouth covering her clit, sucking hard.
Her moan escapes in a staccato, trembling. Biting her lower lip, Entrapta forgets what she’s supposed to ask. Lost in the sensation of his mouth on her clit, tongue dragging along swollen lips. His fingers squeeze the sensitive flesh of her backside, his ears twitching when she says his name. Soon, she’s soaked, unable to think or speak, overcome by physical touch. His arms, once the most obvious area of his defect, don’t waver from the weight, keeping her steady without qualm.
She would love him no matter his appearance, but she’s happy that he has the body he lost before. It brought him so much pain and agony, leaving him enraged and bitter. Entrapta would watch him suffer every day in the Fright Zone, even with her modifications. He felt inadequate, pathetic and alone. She would never think of him this way—he was the most brilliant mind and kindest heart she’d ever met, valuing her for who she was. Loving her despite her own imperfections. She never gave a thought to her physical appearance. What she always worried about was how her mind, her personality, her feelings would be perceived.
He accepted all of it.
And she wants to help him overcome whatever fears remain in him. That the imperfections of his body wouldn’t ever be the only thing of him she’d accept—it would be the doubts, the worries, the anger. He was her friend and husband. He, and he alone, would always be enough.
The heat in her stomach spreads throughout her body. Growing feverish, sweat shining on her skin, her toes curl into his back. Hordak’s ministrations are relentless, breaths muffled as his tongue moves back in, deeper than before, making circular motions within her body.
Shaking with incredible force, it bowls Entrapta forward, clamping her hand over her mouth. Eyes shut closed, brows knitting together, she trembles from the orgasm rocking through her every nerve and muscle. Slowly, her eyelids open, finding him staring up at her.
“Wow…”
Hordak smiles, pleased at such a reaction.
As he wipes up his chin, Entrapta brushes aside his hair, tugging strands over his temple. “Oh... I remembered what I was going to ask…”
“Yes?”
“I was going… to ask… if you think anyone will notice us gone…”
“Perhaps. But I don’t believe there’s a problem, so long as we begin going back now.”
Entrapta gives a gentle pat to his shoulders, and he sets her down. Beginning to dress, she grins, “I think this house is ruined.”
“Nonsense,” Hordak returns, waving a hand. “We need only open a window.”
Cackling wildly, Entrapta leaps up into his arms, nuzzling his neck, “You’re so bad!”
Hordak kisses her cheek, “I try.”
“I can be bad too,” Entrapta says, leering down at his groin.
“I don’t think we have the time,” Hordak replies, arm wrapping around her waist. “As favorable as that outcome would be.”
“Awww… You don’t want to make an attempt?”
“I believe, unfortunately, we have been gone long enough to arouse suspicion.”
“That’s an understatement,” Entrapta replies, wiggling her eyebrows, hand stroking over his clothes. “We definitely can’t hide that.”
A boyish grin and light blush changes his normally stoic demeanor. The expression staggers her mind to a halt, mystifying her on the rare moments it occurs. He’s so pretty...
“Entrapta?” he asks, smile still in place.
Finally recalling what needs to be done, Entrapta moves toward the door, grinning, “I’ll go on ahead, okay? You take your time!”
He nods, and she blows him a kiss that he, on reflex, pretends to catch.
Squealing at his playful attitude, Entrapta bounces out the door.
Hordak hears her voice grow distant, and he notes the faint replies from their friends. Hordak looks back out the window, catching his reflection in the glass. He looks down at his arm, touching it where he can remember missing bone and sinew. He takes in a breath, feeling the air move through his nose, into his chest. The power in his body undeniable.
It’s an odd feeling. Being afraid of nothing.
-
Aurora follows Eon throughout the market. He, apparently, was needed today. His magic lent significant help to his people, restoring broken objects, fixing machinery, and taking deliveries to several places. She won’t admit it, but it was a welcome relief from simply milling about by herself. Granted, these are tasks servants would be doing, but it made her feel normal, like she was accomplishing objectives at Bright Moon.
Eon looks down at her, “Don’t you have other places to be?”
“If I did, I would’ve left,” Aurora replies.
“Are you bored?”
“No, not at all,” she shakes her head. A little surprised she means it, too.
Eon takes her word for it. He hadn’t expected her to trail after him the entire time, and he would catch her standing by, occasionally offering unwanted critique, but he wasn’t going to argue with her. Early on, he certainly did. But the day has been long and he’s hoping to rest soon. She always does what she wants.
“Are you almost done?” Aurora asks.
“Yes,” he replies. “This is my last spot.”
Aurora looks at the sparse appearance, not even a sign put outside. Eon opens the door, singing its soft chime, and Aurora steps in after him. She’s struck to find rows of jewelry arranged along the four walls, painted navy blue, with cases planted into the middle of the floor. Though empty, they are meant for future displays.
Eon heads over to the case closest to the back door, tapping a bell resting on top.
Aurora joins him, “Is anyone present?”
“Should be,” Eon replies, turning around to face the front. He puts his hands in his pockets. “It’s not an issue if no one is—I can come back later.”
Aurora peers at the glass case, looking at dazzling necklaces, bracelets and rings aligned on vermilion velvet stands. She didn’t expect a store of this magnitude on Beast Island. The quality of the items are beautiful, with delicate designs.
Eon watches her from the corner of his eye. Her expression is intrigued, perusing the case with calm interest. He closes his eyes, waiting for the merchant to arrive. He listens to the faint tread of Aurora’s feet on the ground, the soft tap of her fingers on the surface of glass. He lets his mind wander in peace, glad to have a moment to himself.
Aurora eventually returns to his side, “Are you sure they’re here?”
“Yes,” he answers, not opening his eyes. “If you prefer, you can go find your parents.”
Aurora turns around, skirt slightly shifting about her feet. She stares up at Eon, debating whether to take him up on the suggestion or not. Her parents might be done, but if they’re not, she wouldn’t be able to leave again as smoothly as before. Staring at each side of the room, she says, “This is rude.”
“Uh-huh.”
“This wouldn’t happen in Bright Moon.”
Eon gives an exasperated sigh, “No, of course not. Nothing bad ever happens in Bright Moon.”
She ignores it or doesn’t hear. Aurora boasts, crossing her arms, “Right! Glad you see it my way.”
“Your Highness,” Eon scoffs, turning to face her. “If everyone could see things your way, we’d have a greater need for service animals.”
She blinks, “Why is that?”
“Everyone would be blind,” Eon answers.
Aurora says, tone clipped, “Oh, what would you know?”
“A lot more than you,” Eon replies, feeling vigor return.
“I doubt you possibly could!” Aurora’s head tilts at an arrogant angle. “The only thing you’ve proven today is that you make an excellent mule.”
Feigning injury, Eon clutches his chest, “Ah! You hurt me. But I could’ve sworn that you were fine with loyal, hard-working creatures. Unless that only matters when it’s useful to you.”
Aurora crosses her arms, huffing quietly.
Eon has known Aurora his entire life. Aurora has proven time and again that she has an elitism that tends to push her away from most people. Her parents are open-minded, cheerful individuals, and together they tend to liven any situation. Aurora can be charming, but she lacks sincerity. While not brash, her keeping an absurd distance from the folks around them during his errands proved that she was around him because he was the one thing she knew, rather than any intention toward actual civility.
Aurora inspects her shoulder, finding a loose thread. She points at it, and it dissolves in the air.
“I thought magic wasn’t a toy,” he says, taunting.
“This isn’t the same,” she snaps.
Before Eon can retort, the door opens behind them. The two turn around and find a woman standing there. Full-figured, with brown hair, hazel eyes and pale skin, the merchant is dressed in Bright Moon garb. Silver arm bands go up to mid-forearm, and she removes a light blue cape to hang on a coat rack.
“Eon, hello! I’m sorry to have kept you waiting. My meeting ran late.”
“No worries. I thought as much,” Eon replies.
The woman stares at Aurora for a moment, stunned, then smiles, “Your Highness! Welcome to my shop.”
Returning the warm greeting, Aurora nods at her, “Hello, I’m pleased to meet you. What’s your name?”
“Minette, Your Highness. If I may ask, what are you doing on Beast Island?”
“Royal duties,” Aurora gives a dainty laugh. “It’s been lovely!”
“I’m glad to hear that!” Minette says, walking over to a desk.
Eon bends down, giving Aurora a deadpan stare.
Aurora shoos him back, returning it with a glare.
“So!” Minette begins, causing the two to stand upright before she can notice. “Eon, I was wondering if you could help me with something.”
“What is it?”
With an excited skip in her step, Minette returns to the chair behind the larger collection of jewelry, “I needed a model for some of my jewelry, and using you would be really helpful!”
“Really? That’s it?” he asks, a bit surprised. “I don’t need to patch a hole in your roof or magic up boxes?”
“Sorry! I understand if you’d prefer to do those things instead,” Minette jokes.
Eon takes his seat, a little relieved that this is the easiest job he’s had today. Aurora sits in a chair nearby, crossing her right ankle under her left, hands in her lap.
“Your Highness, you can scoot closer,” suggests Minette.
Eon gives Aurora a brief glance.
“No, thank you, I’m comfortable where I am,” Aurora says.
“Nonsense! You can try anything on too!”
Aurora is about to decline when Eon rises to his feet and stands behind his seat. He indicates to it with a quick motion of his head, and Aurora elects to accept it. He pushes the chair under her, before levitating the one she’d been in next to it.
Minette smiles, bringing out her first batch, “How is Nyxia?”
“She’s doing well,” he informs her. “She’s likely in a meeting herself.”
“Your mother isn’t usually doing business with other people, correct?”
Eon peruses the jewelry that she places out on the table. Picking up a silver-banded ring, a crimson gem laid in its intricate center, he says, “I suppose she isn’t. But she will occasionally meet up with someone. I think she had to discuss matters with the council on Mystacore.”
“No doubt causing a stir of some sort,” Aurora adds, slipping a white bracelet onto a delicate wrist.
Eon glances at her, “You would know how to do that, wouldn’t you?”
Aurora gives a demure grin, “Whatever do you mean?”
“Playing coy only works on the dim, Aurora," he tells her with a smirk. "But I don’t blame you for being outside of familiar company that you think it’d work on me.”
“Ha ha.”
Minette watches with curious fascination, beaming at them, “You two must be good friends.”
Aurora and Eon turn to her at the statement.
“Am I wrong?” Minette asks, unsure now.
Aurora gives an awkward smile, a little odd on her lips, “Oh, it’s not that! We’ve known one another for years.”
“For how long, if I may ask?”
“A long, long time,” Eon replies, trying on a bracelet as well, shining black. “My mother knows her aunt.”
“Ohh, I see! I wasn’t aware that you knew the royal family, Eon.”
“Not many do,” he answers.
“How do you know Eon?” Aurora returns the question to the other woman.
“He lived near me at Bright Moon,” Minette explains. “I was a resident of the complexes there.”
“Really?” Aurora asks, shocked. “Why did you move here?”
“I always liked to engage in the unusual,” Minette tells her. A happy smile grows on her face, “It was delightful having Eon move in next door. I had become acquainted with his family when they would visit, and they informed me that my designs might strike a chord with a different crowd too, so I decided to set up shop outside of Bright Moon. I’m going to live here permanently, but I’ll be keeping my place over there to be in touch with my family.”
“Oh, I see…”
Minette notes the slight change in Aurora’s disposition. She sets down a narrow container on the table, “Do not misunderstand, Your Highness! Eon and I had been neighbors for a good few years, and he talked to me about the changes occurring on Beast Island. It seemed like a good opportunity to try my business out here too and build a second location. I grew up in Bright Moon, of course, but a change of pace now and again doesn’t hurt, right? I love my home, but knowing that Beast Island had potential was exciting!”
Eon gives Aurora a brief glance, “Surely, you understand what she means.”
Aurora goes quiet, not wanting to look at him. The two enter a chit chat that doesn’t involve her, to which she finds relief. She doesn’t fully… understand Minette’s motivations. He, unfortunately, is correct. An overachiever herself, Aurora can comprehend pushing toward her goals. But her ties to her home are so valuable, that she can’t help but feel a little slighted that a subject of hers decided that it was better to live here, in an underdeveloped metropolis. She can’t disconnect that success is tied to her kingdom and all its facets. It figures that Eon would be capable of convincing someone that, an idea they’d never considered before, might be what they want. He was always good at that.
It has been… ages since they’ve been in each other’s presence. They don’t interact often, but when they do it can be rather... tense. Tense is how she describes her relationship with Eon. His personality is both sardonic and frigid, which can lead to frustrating discussions. He has been more than pleasant thus far—even with his tendency to argue with her. She attempts to be cordial when she can, but she finds his quips to cut to the quick bothersome.
Then he does things like hold out chairs for her, or open doors and allow her to enter first, and she’s a little confused how someone can hold her with contempt and yet high enough esteem to do favors.
Maddening is also how it can be expressed being around Eon.
Aurora’s curiosity rises when Minette pulls out another box, dark and smooth, with a simple crescent moon latch on the front.
“These are my latest earrings!” Minette says, opening it. An array of different sets are revealed, but Aurora’s eyes hone in on a simple pair: pink tear-drop shaped earrings, not looking like anything special, but they have a soft sheen to their color that’s appealing.
“Your Highness, you seem taken with these,” Minette pulls them out. “Would you care to try them on?”
“Oh! Um, yes, thank you,” Aurora holds them in her hands, delicately pinning each one through her earlobes. Minette places a mirror in front of her, and Aurora discovers that she not only finds them pleasing, but she’s enchanted by it. They dangle as she moves her head, and she smiles. Genuine and delighted. “These are beautiful.”
“Thank you!” Minette turns to Eon. “And what about you?”
Eon stares at Aurora, and he pulls himself out of his reverie before Aurora can turn to face him. He looks down at the velvety interior, checking the selection. He does find his eyes trained on a similar pair, but in lovely lavender rather than the rosy pink she chose, their diameter wider a bit at the tip before becoming more rounded at the bottom by comparison as well. He picks it up, staring at it for a moment.
“Try them on, try them on!” encourages Minette.
Eon does as she says, and he checks the mirror too. He gives a light chuckle, the side of his mouth tilting up, “You do know how to win a man over.”
Minette claps her hands excitedly, “Good! Do you two like them enough to get them?”
Aurora nods, beaming, “Yes, absolutely!”
“Yes, I definitely want them,” Eon begins. He reaches for his pocket, “How much is this, Minette?”
“Eon, you silly boy,” the older woman giggles. “Consider them a gift from me to the both of you, hm?”
Aurora waves a hand, “Oh, that’s sweet of you, but you should be paid for your work!”
Eon nods in agreement, taken aback, “It doesn’t feel right to have them handed over. I can pay for Aurora’s set as well.”
Aurora, a little flattered despite herself, coos, “Aww, really?”
“Yes, really,” he answers.
Minette wags a finger, “Ah-ah-ah! I won’t hear of it. It really is my way of saying thanks to Eon for helping out today and times past; and Your Highness, I’d be honored if you wore them!”
Grinning, Eon shrugs, reclining in his seat, “Well, who am I to turn down a free present?”
“Thank you very much, Minette,” Aurora says. She looks at the mirror again, enjoying herself for the first time today.
-
Glimmer stands next to Entrapta, looking over a couple of blueprints that the engineer created with a team of clones. The day has passed with little event, and Glimmer was glad about that. She addresses Entrapta, “How is Odessa, by the way? Will she be home soon?”
Entrapta nods, widening her smile, “Yes! She will be home in a month.”
“Ooh, that’s exciting!” Glimmer says. “I bet you’ve missed her.”
“I knooooow!” Entrapta flips in place through the air. “I told her if she found anything interesting to bring it back!”
“Where did she go again?”
“She went to visit our family in Inicos. It’s a long journey, but the return trip is much shorter.”
Glimmer nods, then glances at Hordak. She leans in, whispering, “Do you think Hordak is excited?”
Entrapta picks up the cue, and whispers back, “Yes! Hordak doesn’t show it, but he misses our baby too.”
“That’s so cute!” Glimmer says.
“I know!”
From where he stands, Hordak’s ears twitch a little, looking over his shoulder at the women. They simply wave at him, and he resumes conversation with Bow.
Glimmer turns her attention toward the darkening sky. It’ll be about time to head back to the castle. She’s been enjoying herself since she’s arrived. Even with all the experience she has now, she cannot help but feel unsettled when she’s in the palace for too long, and it has been an overdue time in regards to going out. Beast Island may not be what individuals think of for relaxation and enjoyment, but without all the technology trying to kill you, it’s fun. Bow can attest to that.
The sound of the elevator is familiar by now that none of them turn to it. But a moment later, Glimmer hears, “Hi, Mama!”
She looks over Entrapta’s shoulder, and she rises to greet her daughter, “Aurora! Hi, honey. Did you have a good time?”
The princess gives a delicate shrug of her shoulders, “I suppose.”
“Are those earrings?” Glimmer asks, pointing to her ears. “You didn’t have them on before.”
Aurora touches one, “Oh, yes! Do you like them?”
“I adore them! They’re such a compliment to your face—” begins Glimmer, when her eyes slide over to the left. She lets out a loud gasp, “Eon!”
Eon continues his strides, giving a salute with his hand, “Hello.”
Glimmer, despite being dwarfed by the younger man, teleports over the remaining four feet and crushes him to her. “Oh my gosh, how’ve you been?”
“Not broken,” he remarks.
“Oh, I know you’re fine!” Glimmer laughs, releasing him. She holds his wrists in her hands, appraising him. “By the moon, you’ve gotten tall.”
Eon brushes his hair from his face, grinning down at her, “Thank you, it’s genetics.”
Entrapta bounces over, giving him an affectionate pat on the back, “And your strict diet!”
“That too,” he agrees. “I’d kill to have a slice of cake.”
“Were you with Aurora just now?” Bow asks, walking over to them with Hordak.
“She accompanied me all day,” Eon informs the couples. “She performed good samaritan duties.”
Glimmer can’t help her astonishment. She looks at Aurora, “Really?”
“He happened to be walking by, that’s all,” Aurora explains. “He worked, I watched.”
Bow holds his daughter by the shoulder, pulling her to him, giving her a happy shake, “You learned a thing or two though, didn’t you?”
“Sure, Papa.”
Eon leans down to Glimmer, “You know, she actually got dirt on her.”
“For once, huh?” Glimmer jests back.
Flushing, Aurora crosses her arms, “Mama, please…”
Hordak turns to Bow, “Will you three be returning to Bright Moon now?”
Bow nods, “Since Aurora is here, and it’s getting late, we likely should.”
Glimmer turns to the clone family, “Would any of you be interested in coming back and having dinner? The cooks don’t mind that!”
Entrapta shakes her head, “As much as I’d like to ask for tiny food from your chefs, Hordak and I have a previous engagement to attend to, so we’ll have to say no!”
Hordak nods at them, “Perhaps another time.”
“Got it!” Glimmer says, looking up at Eon. “What about you? You can have that slice of cake with us!”
“I got something to finish up here, but thank you, Your Majesty.”
“Eon, please, it’s Glimmer!”
“Sorry, Glimmer.”
Bow adds, “You should come by the next time you’re around!”
“Thank you,” Eon says, glancing at Aurora. “I’ll consider it some time.”
After a few more pleasantries, Eon bids farewell first. Hordak and Entrapta accompany the family to the portal about halfway before they veer off to their own place.
Glimmer stares up at her husband, “This was a great outing, wasn’t it?”
Bow stretches his arms toward the sky, “You bet! It’s good to get out of the stuffy meetings now and then.”
Aurora purses her lips, “I think we could’ve gone home sooner.”
Glimmer looks at her daughter, “Didn’t you have fun with Eon?”
“I had as much fun as one could while watching someone do menial labor,” Aurora replies.
“It’s good to get out regardless,” Bow says.
“I did always like that boy,” Glimmer tells them.
Aurora sighs, not understanding how he can win her parents over. He can be charming, to be sure, and he surprised her today by how useful he was to others. Even thoughtful. But he doesn’t have anything else going for him. She finds it to be a lucky thing that he enjoys being distant from her too.
Today was a fluke.
After all, he is a clone’s son.
-
Entrapta holds Hordak to her chest, brushing his hair as he falls asleep, “Did you have fun earlier today?”
“In the house or with our friends?”
“Both!”
Hordak smiles at her. His fingers slide up to touch her face, “I did enjoy myself.”
Entrapta leans forward, kissing the bridge of his nose. She puts their foreheads together, “Are you sure you don’t want me to do anything?”
“You can return the favor to me later,” Hordak says. “I’m comfortable.”
Entrapta continues petting his scalp, finding that she is also in a cozy position, and maybe they will just have more fun tomorrow. She yawns, voice getting drowsy, “Are you happy Odessa is coming soon?”
“Yes, I am,” he replies. “There’s much to discuss with her.”
“There is…”
Hordak’s eyes drift to his wife’s collarbone. Breathing in the scent of her skin, Hordak pulls her closer. His thoughts begin to pick up in the quiet of the room. Churning. Once his mind finds something to think about, he can have as much a difficult time letting it be as Entrapta could. And their daughter was, for better or worse, the same.
He asks, with unusual hesitation, “Is Odessa keeping something from me? She has a strong wanderlust, and she enjoys visiting family but... she doesn’t feel like herself. When she left, it seemed as if she was unsure of how to approach me. That she didn’t want to inform me of any event she experienced. Am I imagining it?”
She doesn’t answer.
“Entrapta?”
The question receives light snores as a response.
Sighing, Hordak kisses the column of her throat before settling into her chest, unable to stop thinking of his dream from earlier. The sense of unease he has balled in his chest.
He is curious what this odyssey would entail for his daughter and her friends.
And he is worried what the outcome may be.

We hope everyone has had a wonderful holiday season as we kick off the new year! A huge shout-out to everyone who participated last quarter and made it such a huge success! We look forward to all the amazing new fanfiction and fanart to be nominated and shared with this beautiful community!
Before we get started, there have been a few changes that have been made during our brief hiatus.
We want to give a shout-out to @britonell for always being so generous with her time and talent with creating award banners. (If you have not yet received your award banner for last quarter, please reach out to one of the mods asap!)
There are also some changes coming to the categories that may effect you as nominators:
Considering we now have a storyline in regards to Yashahime, we are now allowing works to be nominated into Fanfiction categories. However, because the storyline is not fleshed out enough and a lot of large parts are missing still, we will NOT accept any Yashahime works into the Best Canon Fanfiction category until more has been revealed. If there are any questions on this, please feel free to reach out to the mod-team.
Our Roulette category for fanfiction this quarter will be Best Canon Divergence Fanfiction. This is defined as: Anything that walks outside of Takahashi’s original vision, but includes some key defining moments from the original canon universe. Anything that starts in the World created by Takahashi and is taken to a different outcome. For this quarter, we are splitting the Best AU/AR category. The new definition for Best AU/AR Fanfiction this quarter is: Anything that walks outside of Takahashi's vision. Anything that moves the characters outside of Takahashi's setting of Feudal Era Japan or Modern day Japan is AU/AR. Anything that changes the main characters beyond the basic core attributes Takahashi granted them. Anything that includes a separate world and series of events. If there are any questions regarding this, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the mod-team.
As a reminder, any work of fiction may include OC’s, but it must reflect 80% of the storyline revolving around the Inuyasha characters.
One major change is that we are now going to evolve the Winners into First, Second, and Third place Awards. This has happened in past IY awards and some fans were hoping that we would be able to bring this back. However, this change is going to be based solely on the level of participation by you guys!
For any category to receive up to three nominations, a First Place banner will be awarded to the winner.
For any category to receive up to five nominations, First and Second Place banners will be awarded to the winners.
For any category to receive up to seven nominations, First, Second, and Third Place banners will be awarded to the winners.
Basically, the more nominations we receive, the more likely the chance for several people to receive banners! If you have any questions regarding this, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the mod-team.
If it was not mentioned above, chances are it hasn’t changed. Please be aware that the moderators always take suggestions regarding how the awards are run and category changes into consideration, and each quarter may bring about new changes. You can read up on the most recent FAQs, Rules of Eligibility, and Categories for more information (these links are only available on desktop)
Also for this quarter, check out @inuparentsday, taking place on January 16th!
As nominators, please make sure that each quarter you take a peek at our list of creators who can’t be nominated to make sure you are staying current with who is eligible to be nominated.
The 1st Quarter 2021 nomination period will being January 1st and go until the end of the day January 15th. Please send your nominations through the submit button! If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to send in an ask or reach out to one of the mods!
Mods: @sassybratt9791 @meggz0rz @umacaking @hinezumi @sssuperbartola @ruddcatha
Please reblog to spread the word of the start of the new quarter!
[Below the cut we’ve posted the mobile-friendly FAQs, Rules of Eligibility, and Categories]
FAQ’s
What is The Feudal Connection?
The Feudal Connection is a place where amazing fanart and fanfiction in the Inuyasha fandom is recognized, admired, and offered the chance to be nominated for an award! In addition, it also gives lesser known authors and artists an opportunity to have their work shared to a broader extent and receive the admiration and recognition they deserve!
How do I nominate?
You can send us a submission in one of our nomination formats. Your submission will not be posted and therefore remain anonymous, only to be seen by the moderators. You can send multiple nominations in one submission, as long as the nomination formats are used for each nomination. Please select your fiction nominations carefully; spelling and grammar are important parts of being an author. Anything deemed unacceptable by the moderator team will be disqualified. Once nominations are complete, we’ll post the list of accepted nominations so you can read and view them before voting.
Can I nominate my own art/fiction?
You cannot nominate yourself. Doing so will result in the nomination not being accepted and a warning from the award moderators.
How long do I have to nominate?
You will have 2 weeks from the start of the nominating quarter to send in nominations. These dates will be posted at the beginning of each quarter.
Can I nominate anonymously?
No. This is due to the fact that no one is allowed to nominate their own work. Also, if a nomination is disqualified, the moderators will be reaching out to the person who nominated to allow them another opportunity to nominate.
Can I promote my own works of fiction/art to be nominated for a quarter?
No. You are not allowed to self-promote your own work during the nomination. This includes not being allowed to request others to nominate your work in specific categories. However, you are allowed to promote the nomination period of the awards by stating something similar to “go nominate your favorites” or the like, as long as you don’t promote your own work to being nominated. Violation of this rule will result in a warning. If there is a second offense, your work will be banned from being nominated in any future quarters.
How many fanfics/fanarts can I nominate?
Only one fiction or artwork can be chosen for each category per person. Meaning, a story or artwork can only be nominated by one person per category. Therefore, any secondary nominations will be disregarded and the duplicate nominator will be allowed to submit another story or artwork in its place.
Is there a limit to how many works can be nominated per category?
Yes. Only 7 fictions or artworks can be nominated per category. Once that category has reached its nomination limit, no more nominations will be accepted into that category for the current quarter.
What fanfiction/fanart is eligible to be nominated?
Please see Rules of Eligibility.
What is the nominating format for fanfics? For fanart?
Nominating format for fanfiction:
Category: (List the name of the category you’ve chosen) Nominated by: (List YOUR screen name) Rating: (The fiction’s rating) Title: (Title of the fiction) Author: (List the name of the person who wrote the story) Website(s): (Add the link where the story can be seen)
(For Best “In-Character” list the character’s name): (For Best “Friendship” list the characters’ names):
Nominating format for fanart:
Category: (List the name of the category you’ve chosen) Nominated by: (List YOUR screen name) Title: (Title of the artwork) Artist: (List the name of the person that drew the piece) Website(s): (Add the link where the art can be seen)
Can I nominate a fanfic/fanart for more than one category?
Yes. The same story or artwork may be nominated by the same person in up to two different categories.
What are the categories?
The categories for both fanart and fanfiction can be found in the Categories link.
Can I nominate a fanart/fanfic that includes Original Characters or Crossover Characters?
Yes. For Fanfics, 80% of the story needs to be focused on Inuyasha characters and the development of the story. OC’s can be in a story, but the main focus needs to be on the Inuyasha characters. Artwork can contain Non-IY characters where specified, but NO art may contain only OC’s or Non-IY characters. (i.e. Artwork of Inuyasha and Kagome’s “OC children” are unacceptable without other genuine IY characters present in the piece)
I don’t want my fanart/fanfic nominated. Can I opt out? How?
Once a nomination has been approved by the moderators, the author/artist will be made aware of the nomination. Every author/artist retains the right to have their work be removed from the nomination list and can opt out of future nominations. Simply reach out to one of the moderators to let us know.
How many quarters are there?
There will be 4 quarters total per year. Each quarter will be broken down by dates prior to the quarter starting.
How long is each quarter?
Each quarter will be approximately 8 weeks.
How long is the voting period?
The voting period will last for 2 weeks.
How do I vote?
Once the voting period begins, the moderators will post a link to the voting form that will list all of the nominations and which categories they have been nominated for. You can click on the link to be taken to the voting poll, however, you must sign in as you will be allowed only one vote per category.
When are the winners announced?
At the end of each quarter.
What happens if my fanfic/fanart wins? Do I need to do anything?
You don’t need to do anything; you can kick back, relax, and enjoy the feeling of being recognized for your hard work! We will be contacting you in regards to your award within the next twenty-four hours.
I want to nominate an artist/author who has won in the past. Are they still eligible to be nominated?
There is a Winner Ban in place. Once any piece of artwork or fanfiction has won an award for a category, it automatically becomes ineligible and cannot be nominated again for that category. However, it can be nominated for other categories after three consecutive quarters have passed (ie: one year since that piece won) as long as it fits within that definition. We currently do not have a rule against nominating an author/artist back into the category they won for in the past, as long as it is a different piece of work that is being nominated.
I have a question that’s not listed.
Please feel free to send an ask or a direct message to one of our mods and we will get back to you as soon as possible! :)
Rules of Eligibility
Fiction and Fanart published on any public or free site can be submitted for an award provided they meet all of the requirement of the nominations. These sites include but are not limited to Tumblr, Fanfiction.net, AO3, Deviantart, ect. If the validity of a site is uncertain, reach out to a moderator.
Multi-chapter fics must have been updated within the past 3 years of the nomination quarter. Fanart must have been created within the past 3 years of the nomination quarter.
One-shots and drabbles must have been posted within the past 3 years of the nomination quarter.
If the work was posted onto several different locations, the earliest date and time stamp will be taken and checked against the quarter’s period of eligibility. Stamps posted within reviews can be used to date a work and/or its chapters. Also, authors and artists can be contacted to verify timeframes.
You cannot nominate yourself. Doing so will result in the nomination not being accepted and a warning from the award moderators.
You are only allowed to nominate one fic/fanart per category.
Each piece of Art or Fanfiction is allowed to be nominated into a maximum of two different categories per quarter. The nominations will be taken on a first come first serve basis, meaning that once a piece of Art or Fanfiction is nominated into two categories, it will not be allowed to be nominated into other categories, and each subsequent nomination will be rejected.
Each author/artist is allowed to be nominated twice per quarter. Meaning, an author/artist can only have a max of two of their creations be nominated per quarter. So be sure and pick your favorites carefully!
The work must be in compliance with the definition of the category into which it was nominated.
Both adult and non-adult artwork are acceptable for nominations.
Categories
*Please keep in mind that these are subject to change pending participation and suggestions.
There are 32 categories in all - 16 for Fanfiction and 16 for Fanart. Please adhere to each categories’ definition when nominating. If a nomination does not fit within the definition, it will be disqualified.

Best Overall Artwork
The quality, time, thought, and emotion that went into this piece is what would make it worthy of this nomination. Please take note: The general idea is not the “best of what’s nominated” or “best of show.” It is a category created specifically for art appreciation. That means that even if the characters are OOC, AU, or not drawn in anime style, etc., the ART itself is worthy of praise.

Can’t everyone use tumblr how they want?
YES!
This site is exactly what people make of it for themselves. That was the exact point of that post. The fact that people reacted negatively to it at all proves my point. Seriously.
I have a number of other anons that are clearly from people who don't actually follow me, and are only here in a reactionary fashion having seen it on someone else's reblog, or else heard about it in passing and decided the best reaction to an ultimately harmless and rather bumbling post was to take personal offense and bring anonymous hate to a stranger on the internet. (and at least one not-anonymous "go kill yourself" type comment on the post itself)
THAT was the point of making that post.
For people who might be new to this fandom or new to tumblr in general (or even for people who have been here for years), your experience here is exactly what you make of it. I haven't seen that sort of vitriolic kneejerk reaction to anything I've written or posted in years. That post touched nerves. So it was a bit of an experiment, and I'm sorry to everyone who experienced any of that negativity second-hand. NOBODY should be made to feel like shit when engaging with something that is supposed to be fun. But I've learned over the years that that's exactly what some people consider fun.
There are new people to this fandom since the absolute free for all of the weeks after November 5th. We all reveled in those weeks before the show collapsed in on itself two weeks later. It was like 15 years worth of Hiatus Blogging followed by... well... some of the worst genuine hurt and disillusionment I've ever experienced or witnessed inflicted on a fandom by a piece of media.
There have to be at least a few people who floated into this fandom during that emotional roller coaster who want to make sense of it all, who were at least curious enough about how a show could've brought the characters to that emotional moment in 15.18 before effectively ignoring it all and burning the entire 15 year narrative to nothing just two episodes later.
Some folks stuck around to dig through the ashes of fandom in search of carrion, and that's fine. Some have zero desire to ever engage with the show or the fandom beyond mocking it for ever having existed at all, and that is also fine! But some folks? They might be wondering why anyone ever saw anything in this narrative to begin with, and they might be interested in knowing that there is this vast collection of information available to them (funny that none of my self-righteous anons even mentioned those, outside of one pointing out that my phrasing introducing that section of links was easily interpreted as condescending... which... yeah... again that was the point, and no I will not edit that language. none of us are free from sin).
Tumblr hasn't "changed." It was always this way. This site is not a monolith. Fandom is not a monolith. Even smaller groups within fandom aren't monoliths. Things that are considered "tumblr standard etiquette" do not exist across this entire website. And even within the supernatural fandom, and even within the tumblr-destiel-portion of the fandom there aren't "rules" dictating how you interact with anyone. Well, the one specific rule we should all be able to agree on is that you don't bring hate to real actual human beings, and yet...
There has ALWAYS been the option to engage with fandom here on whatever level an individual chooses. And that hasn't really changed since the finale aired. Anyone who thinks that Tumblr or the fandom has "evolved" or "changed" has likely just fallen in with a different fandom bubble then they'd existed within before. None of the bubbles have actually popped or disappeared. But which one you experience is entirely your own choice. You curate your experience here.
That was the point, illustrated by the vast array of comments I actually got on that post, structured with a little bit of everything including "tumblr mom from 2014." Everything pisses some people off, you know? Even the perception that some stranger on the internet might dare to lay down an arbitrary "rule" that zero people actually have to follow. See what I mean?
Because if any of the people who kneejerked at it actually followed me, or knew me at all, they wouldn't have kneejerked. They would've seen the point.
So your experience is what you make of it here. There are resources for people actually interested in engaging with the narrative or the fandom or the history of it. People mock "tumblr moms" or "fandom moms" all the time, but there wouldn't ~be~ a fandom without the people who actually build those resources. I.e. adults with the time, money, and personal investment in actually sustaining the fandom, instead of running around with torches trying to burn it down at every new whiff of perceived ~drama~ to latch on to.
For example, all of the scripts we've been acquiring and sharing with the entire fandom free of charge. I know that the fandom bubbles who seize on those scripts like hungry vultures to cough back up out of context "gotcha" posts postulating whatever theory of the differences between script and screen will dredge up the most drama or outrage in their fandom bubble... they haven't even considered how those scripts were acquired and made available to them. To them, they are "leaks." They are gifts that fell out of the sky and landed in their laps. There isn't even the barest curiosity about their origins or relevance beyond whatever social nourishment they derive by making up stuff and spouting it out with unearned authority. It's sad. But if that's how they enjoy the fandom, it's nice to remind them that none of the fandom they cannibalize would exist without the rest of us, too.
Yes, even the people you disagree with. Even the people who ship the things you find disgusting or repulsive. Even people who have an entirely different experience to your own. Even the people who are only here for those gotcha posts.
Fandom is not by nature a nihilistic shitshow, or no fandom would survive the amount of drama the 1% try to bring to it. Here have a fanlore article about this phenomenon. Right now, in Supernatural fandom, it feels like more than 1%, but I promise it really is only 1%. They're just really loud. There's actually other avenues to participatory fandom available to anyone who chooses to find them. Parts of this vast fandom that aren't focused on that 1% of reactionary leg-chewing at every turn. None of them are (as the linked article confirms) truly 100% free of unnecessary drama or bad behavior (including ME, I mean I MADE THAT POST!), but on tumblr you can curate your own experience. Fandom actually can be fun without burning down the thing you claim to be a fan of, or attacking other real human people for having the audacity to exist on the internet in a way you might believe is out of touch or pathetic. Seriously, nobody deserves to experience that from anyone over a fucking television show. Like seriously, take a step back and examine your life and your choices at that point.
Tumblr was exactly the same as a fandom community when I joined as it is now. Throughout my entire time here, I've curated my own personal experience to exactly what I derive the most personal satisfaction from. During that time I have had numerous friends and mutuals lament that their personal experience had become so toxic, but they were afraid to trim those blogs from their dash for fear of having no content left to engage with at all. For years there have been follow lists and blog recs and people desperate to find a more "peaceful and fun" fandom experience. People grow exhausted and embittered when their entire experience of fandom is an emotionally draining drama train. It's like pandemic doom scrolling, but for the thing that should be a respite from that sort of mindset, something that's supposed to be entertainment. The show did enough to us all, we don't have to turn around and re-inflict it on each other day in and day out on tumblr dot com.
So if even one person saw my post and thought well shit maybe I actually want to engage with a wider swath of fandom and see what's there, after seven months of post-finale drama, this whole other region of fandom is still here, still being the curators of the archives, the creators of stories and art and meta and gifs and videos and actually caring about it all that will keep this fandom going long after the current round of exhausting drama inevitably plays itself out.
The amount of in-group language in the negative replies I got was unsurprising. It's like folks are living in an alternate universe that doesn't mesh at all with what I experience on this exact same hellsite. Almost like we exist in entirely different bubbles of fandom, with entirely different purposes for existing at all. Everyone on this hellsite gets to pick which bubble (or bubbles) to take up residence in. Some people simply forget that their personal bubble isn't the universal defining experience of this site. Unfortunately, I doubt my little disruption to their bubbles will actually make any of them see that, but you anon... I think you did.
You are highly encouraged to engage with fandom EXACTLY THE WAY YOU CHOOSE. You have the ultimate power in controlling your entire experience here. Tumblr and Supernatural Fandom on tumblr is not Just One Thing that everyone who wants to participate in must conform to one specific code of ethics or behavior to be part of. And that NOBODY has the right to tell anyone else they're doing it wrong (including ME! I am 100% including myself in this!).
It's not MY job to dictate how anyone else experiences this fandom, as much as it was not the job of the people who reblogged my post (which I did not personally shove into their eyeballs with a demand for compliance... how did any of those people even *find* my post?) solely to tell me how *I* need to change how I experience the fandom, you see? Don'tcha love hypocrisy!
But the point was made for those who care, and a lot of people got to update their block lists (I still don't block anyone, as I said I curated my fandom space here and generally don't follow folks that don't personally make me happy and enrich my life by engaging with their content. However other people choose to engage with *my* content (any of it, going back nearly 50k posts over the last decade) is their business entirely. Sometimes I just feel the need to draw out people who are all too eager to expose their own whole asses in public. Mission accomplished.
#fandom problems#and again i'm sorry that anyone i know was exposed to ugliness because of this#but everyone i know also knows that i'm probably the least easily upset person in this corner of the fandom#if even one person achieved a modicum of self-awareness that their experience is not universal#that there IS no universal experience even#then i guess the point was made

I just wanna make a quick post about interacting with kids, because people on here seem to not know how kids work. (quick note before I start though: this is all spoken from my experience in working with kids--I do not have children of my own. I volunteer every year at an elementary school, working closely with younger kids who are struggling with learning certain subjects but don’t necessarily qualify for special ed (COVID has put a pause on this but I fully intent to resume as soon as it is safe to do so.) I am also a facilitator for a support group through a nonprofit--I’m part of the team in charge of facilitating the middle school group (ages 11/12-14). I didn’t really want to make this post because a lot of people get offended by these viewpoints, but the more I observe how kids are being treated by the adults in their life, the more I realise I need to say something.)
***I encourage you to reblog and add your own thoughts: I want to have an open discussion about this.
Ok, first of all: Kids are a LOT smarter than you think they are.
The problem is, they don’t know how to communicate and apply this yet. Calling them dumb and treating them as if they have nothing to offer conversations doesn’t support their development at all; in fact, it is one of the easiest ways to discourage a kid. This doesn’t mean turn off your filter and talk to kids the same way you’d talk to your friends. It just means, genuinely listen to their perspective and allow them to be part of intelligent conversations. Kids can’t learn responsible, mature ways to communicate if you don’t give them the opportunity to try it.
One city in Colorado did a project that got kids involved in city development. In fact, this project was so successful that they are still continuing it! The classroom I volunteer in did a project inspired by this a few years ago. The first grade classroom was tasked with creating a city that could be applicable to real life. Their only restrictions were that they had to include four things: recreation, housing, jobs, and education. How they did that and what else they included was up to them. They were allowed to be as creative as they’d like.
The teacher, other volunteer and I expected the city they made to be something out of a fantasy world. What we saw, though, was absolutely incredible.
The kids created a detailed park complete with a pond for wildlife, a pool for recreation, walking trails, parking, wheelchair ramps, disability accessible bathrooms, community gardens, playgrounds designed specifically for younger kids, and another for older ones. They included apartment buildings and bus stations. They added traffic lights to intersections and lowered speed limits nearby their school. They made several large public schools, as well as a college (which they insisted, unprompted, was low-income accessible. They made a hospital and a fire station.
Their instructions were only to create a city with only four boxes to check. They weren’t required to do any more than build the layout of it. But when we asked them to give us a tour of their city, they not only told us what each building was: they described laws that protected minorities. They told us about what roles people would have in their city, including the roles of kids.
No, it wasn’t to the great detail and precision that an adult could. Yes, there were many holes in their creation that would cause problems in the real world. They obviously weren’t thinking in terms of budget or government restrictions. But in a way, that made their ideas so much better. They weren’t tied down by the expectations adults had. They added features that we’ve been fighting for for years, such as basic accessibility, both physical and financial (such as their insistence about free college education).
Kids’ lack of experience doesn’t make them stupid. In fact, I believe it’s part of what makes them so smart. They observe the world around them and aren’t seeing things in terms of criticism and limits. They see something that needs to change, and they aren’t afraid to come up with creative ideas to make that change.
Talking at kids doesn’t do shit.
Telling a kid to do something or not to do it is probably the quickest way to encourage them to do the exact opposite.
But you know what I’ve found works almost every time? TWO WAY CONVERSATIONS!
Saying “don’t talk to people like that” is a very easy way to not change behaviour. Rather, help them understand why they shouldn’t talk a certain way.
When working with young children, I usually start off with saying “When you said [x], my feelings were hurt because...” And then they usually figure it out for themselves that they said the wrong thing.
This works so much better because:
1) the kid doesn’t get defensive. When you scold them for misbehaving, they quickly learn to guard themselves from that. When you can calmly explain to them what was wrong about that situation, they’re less likely to try to protect themselves from your words: because they won’t need to.
2) They learn exactly what was wrong about what they said. When you just tell them they’re wrong but refuse to talk to them about how or why they did something hurtful, they can’t always take it the right way. When a kid says “you look dirty” and you tell them that’s rude, they don’t understand why. In their heads, that may have been them trying to say you have mud smeared on your pants, or you have food spilled on your shirt: they may have just been trying to help you. When you explain to them exactly what about that statement was hurtful, and perhaps offer a kinder way to say it, they’ll recognise their mistake much quicker and remember it better.
3) They’ll learn how to express their own feelings in a much more healthy way. Kids learn from their surroundings. When you snap at them for making a mistake, you teach them to do the same. Then, later on down the road, you may hurt their feelings, and they may lash out at you. When you teach them to communicate more openly, they’ll learn how to address their problems in a productive manner.
4) It gives them the opportunity to problem solve. When you say “this hurt because” instead of “you’re wrong”, it allows them to come to the conclusion that they made a mistake on their own. It’s basically the child-equivalent of providing someone with sources to try to disprove them. Except when it’s taught from a young age, they’ll learn to accept the criticism instead of attack it.
On a related note, when you see a problem coming up repeatedly, or a child is growing upset about something: Share your feelings about the situation, ask them to share theirs, and then help them come up with solutions.
Mistakes are healthy
Stopping a young person from making a mistake isn’t always helpful. Obviously, if they’re about to hurt themselves or others, stop them. But if it’s a little mistake, let them make it. And then talk to them about it. Help them come up with ways to first fix this mistake and then to avoid making the mistake again in the future.
It conveys the message of “you’re human and mistakes are normal: I’m here for you.” instead of the message of “You can’t do anything right, just let me do it for you.”
You can’t learn and grow as a person if you’re never allowed to put yourself out there and make mistakes. Give young people the chance to try things themselves: but make it clear you’re here for them when they need support.
Listen to them.
This piggybacks off of a lot of what I said above, but listening to kids is important.
When a teenager says they need help, it’s far more effective to ask them how you can help them than it is to tell them why they’re struggling and then refuse to help them solve it. I can’t tell you how many kids I’ve had reach out to me saying they feel alone because of this. They’ll come to me saying that they went to their parent to say they feel depressed (or even are on the brink of hurting themselves in some way), only to be met with “well you should think about how I feel” or “you’re just being dramatic.”
When a kid says something hurt them, LISTEN TO THEM. Kids’ feelings are every bit as complex as those of an adult. You don’t turn 18 and suddenly have a real brain with real emotions. You have that your whole life; humanity doesn’t come with age. experience based decisions do.
And, spoiler alert: kids know themselves better than you do. No, this doesn’t mean when your 11 year old refuses to eat vegetables or brush their teeth, you can shrug and say “well they know themselves best”. This means when they try to share how they’re feeling (ESPECIALLY when they’re sharing a feeling about something you did), listen to them and try to compromise when it’s reasonable to do so. If you hurt their feelings--apologise. If they feel like they deserve more freedom, offer up ideas for how they can earn your trust.
TL;DR: Kids aren’t brainless creatures you can ignore and wonder why they aren’t becoming functional adults. They don’t lack intelligence: they lack a method to communicate that intelligence
Treating kids like adults (in an age-appropriate way) gives them the opportunity to learn the skills needed to act like adults when they’re thrown into the real world. You can’t treat them like they’re dumb their whole life and then ask why they’re not succeeding.
#This post mostly references young kids but it applies to kids of all ages#childcare#kids#teenagers#tips for interacting with kids#some of y'all wonder why kids aren't listening to you???#I honestly can't believe these things have to be said#I just...#*sighs*#I have more to say on this but the post was getting long and its late#come talk to me about this#I genuinely want to hear other perspectives

Epilepsy Awareness Month💜
I recently seen this post by @interstellix who made great points about epilepsy for Epilepsy Awareness Month. It sums it up really well so I suggest you give it a read and reblog! Its nice to find another photosensitive here too because we’re such a small group within the epilepsy community. I deal with anxiety on top of my epilepsy and while they aren’t always related to each other, I don’t hear enough about the day-to-day worries of epileptics. Things that seem completely normal or fine to some people can be dangerous for me, which is why stuff like giving trigger warnings are much appreciated. But often, non-epileptics don’t know about what its like to actually live with epilepsy - not just having seizures. I want to add on some of my own experiences with a funky clickbait title, below the cut. Anyone who reads this all is a star and ily⭐️
10 Things Non-Epileptics Don’t Get (Yet)
1. That moment in movies when the character wakes up and a bunch of faces are gawking down at the camera uncomfortably. Always have someone to stay with the person having a seizure. But out of care for both that person and the people around, its best to get everyone else away. No one enjoys watching someone have a seizure - it’s scary and knowing you can’t stop it can ignite feelings of guilt or panic. For the person having the seizure, its embarrassing - they aren’t even conscious of what’s happening and for all they can remember, they were minding their own business and now they’re waking up and barely able to move their body without wincing in pain.
*TW: BODY FLUIDS* I’ve literally puked, shit and pissed myself all at the same time unconsciously in front of a room of people. I’m lucky these people were my family but it doesn’t make it any less embarrassing or upsetting knowing that everyone there saw me in such a state. A fear I had growing up was having a seizure in front of my class and the students making comments about it, thinking it was funny. In today’s age, filming seizures is something to worry about too because of how easily it can be shared to others online. Even if you aren’t an arsehole like that, try to be as respectful as possible and get everyone else to evacuate the room. At most, have three people to stay there: one person to stay close and time the seizure, one person to move furniture away and find something soft to lay under the epileptic’s head, and one person for crowd control who is keeping everyone else out and reassuring them all it’s okay.
Whatever you do, don’t make the epileptic feel bad for having a seizure. They can’t control it. Afterwards, comfort them and let them know its all over and you’ll stay with them until they feel better (unless they say they would rather be alone). Most of the time, the epileptic will be so tired and sore after their seizure that they’ll fall asleep. Let them; they need it. I’ve woken up on a couch, in my bed, the back of an ambulance or in a hospital bed and sometimes I was laying there for half an hour, sometimes a whole day. Knowing someone was there is relieving. Knowing everyone was there is shaming and it doesn’t make you feel any better when they’re all in your face afterwards too. Don’t be the camera crew.
2. Travelling alone is either a dream or everyday reality for a lot of people, but its a no-go for some of us. I was raised in a very overprotective household and still today, I don’t have a lot of freedom. Driving is usually one of the first bits of independence you get, but not for me. I’ve had seizures while out travelling because of the SUN. The sunlight flickering through trees, railings or bouncing off surfaces have triggered seizures in me where my family have had to pull over. The thought of being the one driving in such a scenario is terrifying to me, my loved ones and everyone else on the road. Driving is such a normalised thing for people my age that I’m embarrassed to bring up my own case unless someone specifically asks.
Then you have public transport. The sunlight issue is also here but this time, you’re with a bunch of strangers (see Point 1 again). Something my mum drilled into my head since I was younger was that if I ever got public transport by myself, then I could have a seizure and someone would film it and another person would rob me (and then you wonder why I have an anxiety disorder). I got my first bus by myself when I was 19 and for something so mundane to most people, it was like a little adventure to me. My mum didn’t approve but she complained about having to drive me everywhere too. While its fun to get the bus into town every now and then though, it becomes a bigger issue when travelling is a daily requirement and you aren’t able/allowed to drive yourself.
Free public transport doesn’t always include those with epilepsy, depending on which country you live in. What do you do when an employer asks if you can drive? What do you do if you have committments to go to and no one is around to drive or come with you? Or you need to explain why you’re going out, every single time, because someone else has to decide whether its worth the risk. Sunny roadtrips? Want to be a pilot? That last one isn’t a joke, by the way! I used to get a coach/private bus to college and if it was sunny, I’d pull the curtain over, wear my sunglasses and try to nonchalantly cover one eye to help. You can’t really get a curtain while driving your own car though and driving one-handed is not cool, its irresponsible.
3. Staying up all night talking with someone you love isn’t as romantic as we’d like it to be. All-nighters, i.e. lack of sleep, are a huge trigger for many epileptics. I wasn’t allowed to go to sleepovers with friends as a kid until I was 13, and at that sleepover I ended up having a seizure in the middle of the night after waking up to use the bathroom. Not to flex, but I had a seizure on the toilet. Where’s the weirdest place anyone else has had a seizure?. As a result of that, I was put back on medication after being told I was growing out of my seizures and had been med-free for one whole year. I’d love to stay up with a loved one and spend the night talking or watching movies, but I think a seizure would be more of a killjoy than going to bed early.
3. Unless you’re the paparazzi, camera flashes won’t give photosensitive epileptics seizures. Its a small gesture and I do appreciate it, but don’t worry - one small flash from a camera will not send my brain into override. Just don’t be taking photos from 5 different phones at the same time for more than one pic. Standing and waiting for people to take a photo all at the same time is awkward already because you don’t know who to look at, what to do with your hands, if you should change pose, smile or not, etc. Just take one flash photo and be done, or don’t use the flash at all if you don’t need to. Ring lights are a common thing now, by the way and I love them? Bye-bye camera flash!
I don’t blame anyone for having these types of concerns though. The only time you’re probably warned about flashing lights is when you’re about to watch a news report or awards show where there will be paparazzi and performances will be aired. Concerts are another thing that can be risky depending on the genre, size of the venue, whether its indoors or outdoors (if you’re like me and enjoy EDM music, you’ll have a very low chance of actually attending or watching anything live fdkslbjfdhb). Those things we avoid. But you taking a photo with a once-off flash will be okay, don’t worry. Seizures aren’t triggered by a single flash, but rather multiple flashes in a short period of time. They’re called Hertz and that shit hertz when its between 3-30 flashes per second. Also, fuck strobes, the Incredibles 2, Into The Spiderverse and any other movie that uses these for unnecessary effect.
4. Not everyone is diagnosed with epilepsy in their childhood and though some might grow out of it as they get older, not everyone will. I thought I had been growing out of it on two occasions (see point 3 again and point 9). Some people only get diagnosed with epilepsy later into their life. If you’re diagnosed while young, its easier to adjust your life because you’re growing up with it as your norm and its something you’ve just learned to live with. But for some people, they suddenly have to change their entire routine that they’ve established since they became an adult. Be sympathetic to those with epilepsy in their adult years, especially those who only got a diagnosis. Its not just a disability for children.
5. There are different types of seizures and one that’s commonly misunderstood is the partial seizure. These types of seizures have been mistaken for people being drunk or high (i.e. slurred speech, difficulty standing up or walking in a straight line, etc.), which has led them to getting kicked out of venues for something they have no control over. Swimming pools seem to be a common place for these bans, as well as gyms. Sometimes, these people are still somewhat aware they are having a seizure but cannot control them, which is really scary to think about. I don’t have them myself but I cannot imagine how frustrating they must be to not be taken seriously and instead as someone being high or intoxicated and then being punished for that. Alcohol is usually avoided as it can trigger seizures but when these seizures happen at social events, people can get the wrong idea. If you know someone who has these types of seizures, keep an eye on them if you’re out together. We’re usually only allowed one pint and hardly anyone gets that drunk after just one, so be aware that its likely they aren’t actually hammered but having a seizure instead.
6. Nobody likes being overworked but school, college, jobs and sport can very hard on us. Unless you’ve had a seizure, your teacher or boss probably won’t extend a deadline for you. The latter might even fire you. Chronic fatigue isn’t taken seriously. School is one big memory test in most countries, but for those with aura seizures, their ‘spacing out’ can affect how information they are actually taking in. Side-effects of meds can also make concentration and memory tough, and I hate how forgetful I can be because then I feel like I’m unreliable even though I push myself to give 110% anyway. Some activities like sports and physical education can be more draining than they would be for the average person, and sometimes I’d have to sit out during these activities because I felt an aura coming on after overexerting myself. I wish I could sit out having multiple assignments and group projects due in the same week, but college doesn’t work that way. I wish I could tell employers that I might not have that presentation done by the end of the day, but that wouldn’t go down too good either.
If you know someone who takes longer to complete tasks that might seem simple to you, ask yourself if you’ve ever considered they might have epilepsy or another chronic illness or disability. Don’t assume they’re lazy if they need to take an extra day or two to complete their final essay or have to stop their beep test earlier than the rest of the class. I didn’t know a good average for the beep test was 8-9, because no one ever told me. I pushed myself to 16 because I was scared people would think I was lazy and that I was dropping out to be with the other girls who agreed beforehand. I then ended up having an aura that almost slipped into a full seizure. I also almost had a seizure an hour before my religion exam in my Junior Cert at school. My mum even insisted I stay home and miss my State exam because of it. I still went though, took a bathroom break because I had another aura, and finished with an ‘A’ but had it been a different day, I might not have been so lucky. Its about knowing yourself and your limits, but we aren’t always informed that they should exist and then you end up doing stupid things like me that could hurt you. Likewise, its important to be understanding that not everyone can work at the same pace as you. It doesn’t make the quality of our work any less even if we need more time or energy to do it.
7. Side-effects aren’t always in the short-term. My own meds are advised to not be taken long-term as they weaken my bones over time. I’m 21 now and I’ve been on meds since I was 8. I wanted to reduce my dosage and eventually become med-free last year but the neurologist told me I still had brain activity and needed to stick with them. In fact, they almost ended up prescribing me more even after I had told them I was five years seizure-free. Why? See point 9. I’m lucky though because I’ve only been on one type of med. Some people can take years to find what works and their neurologists will prescribe them all sorts and leave them with awful side effects. Only last year I was chatting with a woman whose meds had caused sudden depression and fits of anger in her after she had been diagnosed and given her prescriptions. She eventually got brain surgery instead.
8. If you have a uterus and/or want to have children, do your research and a LOT of it. Birth control is usually a tough decision to make and often times, it can feel like you have no choice. Its so important to check with multiple neurologists and doctors which form of birth control is the best for you with your medication, because even the slightest new introduction to your meds box can have unpleasant side-effects. With the current medication I’m on, I can’t take the pill unless I want to increase my current dosage of meds as the pairing cancel each other and make me more vulnerable to seizures and other side-effects. I’m not pregnant and yet I have to take daily folic acid supplements because my meds cancel that out too. Every month or two, I will faint or almost faint on the first day of my period and I’m more vulnerable to having a seizure during that time. If I ever want to give birth, my children can possibly inherit my condition or be stuck taking care of me when I should be caring for them. I wouldn’t wish that upon anyone.
This is not to say that people with epilepsy can’t have fulfilling sex lives or raise families. But we just do it at a greater risk that even some neurologists aren’t aware of. I had to tell my neurologist last year why I didn’t want to go on the pill because HE didn’t know it interacted negatively with my meds. I’ve known women who were prescribed the pill or meds BY A PROFESSIONAL that interacted negatively with each other and gave them seizures as a result. It takes ‘find the right method for you’ to a whole new level. If your partner has epilepsy, its so important to discuss birth control and take their condition into consideration. I hear men telling their girlfriends to go on the pill so that they don’t have to use a condom, which is really selfish for a start and also disregards other forms of birth control. Do your research but let them and their own trusted neurologist decide which form is best. You should still be using a condom to protect yourselves anyway! And if you and your epileptic partner decide you would like to have children, do the same process and make sure that they are in a safe position to do so.
9. *TW: DEATH* Threatening (even ‘jokingly’) to trigger a seizure in someone is playing with that person’s life. SUDEP (Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy) affects roughly 1 in 1000 people each year. Even if that person doesn’t die after their seizure, you may have just broken a record they set for days, months or YEARS without a seizure. You just revoked their driving license and they weren’t even behind a wheel. You just prescribed them new doses of medication without any years of medical school.
Growing up, I had countless incidences where classmates would joke about making me have a seizure. If the teacher left the room for anything, the first thing they would do is run up to the lightswitch and fuck around with it. In secondary school, I stopped using the bathroom at lunch because one of the girls thought it was funny to deliberately flick the lights on and off anytime I was inside. She would snicker and call out to me while I was in the stall, asking if it could make me have a seizure. Even after saying yes, she continued to do it. If I did end up having a seizure in that bathroom, god knows what could have happened. I had a seizure in a bathroom before and was lucky I only hurt my jaw as my head slammed against the wall. Others aren’t so lucky. Injuries from seizures can be brutal, just like OP said. Yeah, you might not kill them by triggering a seizure, but what injuries do they have to deal with after?
Imagine playing a game for years and you spent ages collecting all the items, defeating every boss and proudly showing off the trophies you won. Now imagine someone suddenly pulls the cord as you’re playing; your game freezes, the screen shuts to black and when you try to frantically start it up again and see where you had remembered to last save, it says your data is corrupted and deletes everything without your permission. It doesn’t matter where or when you saved. You have to start your progress all over again. You can try memorise the strategies from before but the game switches things up and suddenly you’re hit with a difficulty spike out of nowhere. The person who joked around and pulled the plug doesn’t have to do anything. And if they wanted to, they could do the same thing again and again. Don’t be that person. Be their Player 2 and help them. If they need to go into a dungeon but they’re scared to be alone, offer to cover their back. If their health is low, find them a safe spot and let them heal. The same goes for appointments and seizures. Its not a multiplayer game by default and while they can power through solo, that doesn’t mean they don’t need help if they’re ever stuck.
10. To end on a more positive note, there are lots of successful people out who have/had epilepsy and you probably never even knew. Cameron Boyce’s passing brought attention to SUDEP and celebrities with epilepsy but did you also know about these people and their own cases and seizures?
Prince
Elton John
Lewis Carroll
Danny Glover
Lil Wayne
Neil Young
Hugo Weaving
Charles Dickens
Julius Caesar
Vincent Van Gogh
Theodore Roosevelt
Adam Horovitz
Susan Boyle
Rick Harrison (the Pawn Stars guy!)
And some who are not confirmed (due to medical practices of the time) but are suggested as a result of numerous seizures:
Leonardo da Vinci
Michelangelo
Edgar Allen Poe
Agatha Christie
Socrates
Napoleon Bonaparte
Aristotle
Alexander the Great
Epileptics are humans, normal people just like you. And like you, they’re capable of great things too. If you think about making a crude comment to someone with epilepsy, think about these people and ask yourself if you would say the same things to them.
If you read all of this, comment with a ⭐️ and please reblog to spread awareness. Whenever we talk about epilepsy, we start and stop the conversation at seizures. Its good to bring awareness to the other things too because its something that affects every part of our lives. Its an invisible disability but that doesn’t mean we are hidden from the disability community and discussion!

How to loosely gauge where you stand on the privilege scale.
Everybody has some sort of privilege over someone else. It doesn't make you a bad person to have privilege. What makes you a bad person, is not being aware that you have a privilege and criticizing those who have less privilege than you for calling you out on it. So here is a very loose way to find out how much privilege you have. Feel free to add more questions in the comments I'll add them in!
Create a small "staircase" by laying out 21 pieces of paper on the floor, or just 21 small objects to mark the steps. (Have extra in case you need to add as you go)
Start by standing by/on the middle one.
Ask yourself these questions:
Am I white? If yes, take two steps up the stairs. If not, take two steps back.
I am female. If not, take one step forward, if yes take one step back.
I am straight. If yes, take on step forward. If not, take one step back.
I am naturally thin/fit and have no difficulty finding my size in stores or seeing models and celebrities that have similar body types to mine. If true, take a step forward and if false, take one back.
I am christrian. If true, take one step up, if false take one step back.
I live, and always have lived, in a safe neighborhood where I felt no danger on a regular basis. If true, take one step forward. If false, take one step back.
I have never been discriminated against because of my race, religion, or sexuality. Discrimination meaning; in the workplace, school, unprompted on the streets etc. If true, take one step forward and if false, one step back.
I can walk down to the street during the day freely without fear of being called out or attacked. If true, take one step forward. If false, take one step back.
I have a caring and loving family. If yes, take one step forward. If not, take one step back.
I have access to fresh foods that aren't canned, bagged, or prepackaged regularly, and never had to wonder when my next meal would be. If true, take a step forward. If false, take a step back.
I have never been scared of/had my power, cable, water, or electricity turned off because of insufficient funds. If true, take one step forward. If false, take one step back.
My parents/grandparents offer to help/Currently help pay some of my bills or funding. If true, take a step forward. If not, take a step back.
I have never not had a warm bed to sleep in, or a roof over my head. If true, take a step forward and if false take a step back.
I have access to things like the internet regularly, and the ability to further and choose my education if I wished to. If yes, take a step forward, if not take a step back.
I am transgender. Of true, take a step back. If false, take a step forward.
The top of the staircase is success. The higher up you are the easier it's achievable, the less stairs you have to trudge up to get there. You should notice by now you're probably rotating between the same 3-4 steps. Or you're continuously moving forward, or continuously moving backwards. This is where you loosely stand on the privileged staircase. If you're at the top, you are very privileged. It doesn't mean life is perfect or you've never been sad, it just means society has no reason to hold you back, and true oppression will never happen. You have little to no steps to climb. If you're at the bottom you don't experience any privilege in today's society. You are forced to trudge up every step, through every barrier to even just see the top. If your still directly in the middle, you're more privileged than some, and less than others. You get the gist.
This is just to make you more self aware and understand that you don't have to have a perfect life to be privileged, that having privilege doesn't make you a bad person. It means you need to be aware of the privileges you have and how it effects those that DONT have the same ones. To grab their hands and say "you're a person like me, I'll support you in whatever you need to do. I understand I'm privileged and that somethings may be harder for you even if I don't understand it. So please lead the way so I know how to use my privilege to make this better for you. To be equals. You have the floor because I know nothing about what it's like. "
You do NOT put yourself on a pedestal and say "I'm more privileged I'll be their hero."
You do NOT treat them like a disease or that there is something wrong with them and they need help all the time.
You ask them what it's like, you LISTEN to what they have to say with all of your attention because in this time, you don't completely understand and you never will. They are strong, independent beautiful people who don't need saving. Many of them have climbed from the bottom of the steps to the top and deserve every fucking second of praise and reward they recieve. They just need support and friendship. They need RESPECT. They need you to gently grasp their hand as they pass you in the steps, give them a part on the back and say "you're so fucking strong keep pushing yourself." And by listening to their stories when they pause on your step to rest and sharing them as they are said to you word for word is the only way to ever even think of changing the staircase.
You can be angry with where you stand. I want you to be angry. I want you to scream and rage and cry and say "this isnt fair" and then SCREAM EVEN LOUDER. if youre at the top I want you to be angry. I want you to be so mad that you use what you have to understand those below you, o want you to be so mad that you jump off the fucking staircase and say "how the fuck do I break it?" If you're at the bottom I want you to say "SCREW this staircase" and climb the railing to your own success. I want you to find a way to climb without it. To say "Fuck the stair case" and soar because you have just as much potential as the person in front of you and deserve to live and be happy.
Maybe we can never change it. Maybe we are stuck on this stupid staircase, so you give up and ignore it all together. But if we do that we won't ever know if we can weaken the cement holding it together. We never will know if maybe part of the staircase gets cut off or someone gets a chance to hop up a step.
But the first step? (The most difficult for some) is to acknowledge where you stand, and do something about it.
Edit: since I got some feedback Id like to make a couple things clear.
This isn't an exact placement. It's a social exercise. It helps people humble themselves or become more self/socially aware. The act of taking a step forward while knowing someone has to take a step back or even WATCHING someone else take a step back is enough to make a person think. It simply gives you an idea that: "maybe this DOES negatively impact people" or "I take that for granted." It's not an exact place. Of course, if you wanted an exact place you'd need to be severely tested, create multiple staircases for individual topics and then do math to find the average of where you stand. That's not what this is about. It's the action itself.
I would also like to mention that this is just a very basic outline. You can take this game and alter it, use it for specific topics like jobs, mental health, lgbtq+ etc. It's all up to you the questions you ask. Whenever I play this game I always start asking random questions I've seen discussed in the media to see how things going on effect those around me. There will be a couple questions I add up there because they are good valid questions, you can also simply create more and ask yourself them in the moment. Just like how the real world is there are no set structures or rules, just a basic outline.
Also, someone decided to comment on my Grammer and how I worded the questions lmao. I really don't care because posts like these are just brain dumps. They're stuff I just write out quickly on my phone and document for my own sanity. I often don't have the time to sit an plan out brain dumps they just happen, and I have to post them within the time constraints I have. For example I had to write this in less than ten minutes. I also never reread brain dumps because then I end up deleting them. So trust me, I know the grammar isn't great for any of my brain dump posts but that's what they are, dumps. This is just something I do to help connect with people since I have a lot of communication issues and difficulty understanding people, thoughts etc. This game and my brain dumps are how I get through them.
Please, if you think of any good questions feel free to add them in the comments or reblog with more. Check for new questions in the comments.
Again, don't take this too seriously, it's a brain dump and very quickly written. I never expect any brain dumps to get attention, so I feel no need correct grammar or make sure everything is 100% perfect all the time. I just write and go so I can focus on my task at hand. It's that simple.

Dear Mr. Kuri, thank you so much for your recent post concerning the young artist who was effectively censored from sharing his/her/their art on a particular subject (just... so sad). I was hoping to get your thoughts on how adults might navigate interactions with minors in this space. Specifically, extending our support for their work w/out necessarily... engaging with them. I know this sounds crazy stupid but before tumblr I wasn't really active on any social media and I had no idea (cont'd)
there were so many users under the age of 16 on this site. I've even come to learn that some identified users I had interacted with early on were as young as 13, and as someone in my 30's - tbh that scared the shit out of me. I totally agree that someone that young and impressionable would be crushed by the kind of criticism that poor artist faced, and would likely never create or share again... to their detriment. The thing is though, I feel really hesitant following any creator (cont'd)
that isn't 18 or older... What are your thoughts on following/reblogging/interacting with minors in fandom? I fully agree that they need support, especially from older users who don't care what some stranger on the internet has to say... but I just feel... like I don't know how to go about that the right way. I really REALLY don't want minors on my blog at all... sorry to bother you with this, just wondering how you'd suggest handling this. I didn't comment on the post bc I didn't (cont'd)
want to risk that young artist reading my inquiry and feeling even more alienated. As always, thank you for your time and insight. - Birk
I may go a bit off-topic here, but let me give this a try:
I think in, In the end, it all comes down to communication and mutual respect.
Adults have this pervading mentality that until a child hits 18, they need to be infantilized and sheltered, but once they pass that magical number, then it’s a free for all. So, for eighteen years, it’s all about sticking a Potemkin village in front of any idea, person or situation that a child might find uncomfortable (read: they don’t like the feelings it gives them; very different from actual harmful ideas/persons/situations). Then, these sheltered almost-adults enter public spaces and expect society to keep doing that…when it turns out that’s not how it works, they become toxic.
This is how poisonous movements like purity-culture develop online, or new fans who demonize older fans and adults as being perverts for enjoying the very same pastimes they have.
For those of us interacting with these people, the automatic reaction is to “cancel” that person, thereby alienating and isolating them even more in their bad behavior. Instead of taking the time to talk with and try to show them through actions that the world isn’t limited to what they know.
As adults in fandom, we know that a large majority of the fandom is younger, because we were them once. We were that 12-year-old discovering fanfiction existed or sharing drawings we made of our original Harry Potter characters or quoting our favorite movies and televisions ad infinite. We got shit for it in real life, so we had to create spaces of our own online.
We, in effect, built fandom so that it would be more welcoming for the generations that came after us. And while a lot of us stick to that unwritten knowledge, as the years pass, a lot more become gatekeepers. They set a standard of what a fan must know or do to be considered a “real” fan, and they’re mean about how they do that.
Is it any wonder that new fans coming in experience this behavior and then jump on the “adults in fandom is creepy” bandwagon?
These new fans coming in, especially tweens and teens, they still live in this false reality where they only get to enjoy themselves and be kids for a limited amount of time, and once they Become Adult they have to give it all up—and can’t figure out why all those old creeps online are still a part of such “childish” things.
That fault lies squarely on our society, which pushes kids from a young age to be thinking of what they want to do when they grow up so they can get out there and start producing, producing, producing for the state and becoming a “useful” member of society.
We as fandom veterans, need to do our best to teach them differently, and that comes right back to my point: communication and mutual respect.
Older fans need to respect newcomers, as much as the new baby fans need to learn to respect their fandom elders. There is no maximum age for fandom; there’s no minimum age, either, although the younger the fan, the more their parents should be keeping an eye out for the truly damaging stuff and teaching their kids how to avoid that stuff on their own.
Now, obviously, people don’t always announce online how old they are (though it does happen more frequently now than when I started writing), but regardless, there should be a certain etiquette to it.
When you interact with someone online, you don’t know if they are 15 or 50. And the way you interact with them shouldn’t change based on knowing their age. We should maintain the same level of respect for the new fans as the older fans.
So, as to how adults might navigate interactions with minors (especially when you know they’re minors)?
Treat them as any other intelligent human being: with respect.
Because how else are they going to learn?
My mom always used to say to us, “I’m not raising children, I’m raising adults,” which basically meant she was teaching us how to be adults. Kids don’t pop out of the womb magically knowing how to interact with the world, they take their cues from the adults that are already there.
Fandom babies learn how to be active participants in fandom from the people who are already there. And they’re more likely to listen to and look up to someone that treats them as a mature and capable being, than someone who dismisses them as too young or too green, or dismisses their knowledge and experience because they haven’t earned their metaphorical stripes.
Remember, a lot of these kids are coming to fandom because they need an outlet. In this age of helicopter parents, this is the only place where they get to be treated as an individual adult-in-the-making instead of the overly protected child or student that must be shielded from the world. A lot of them are trying to figure out how to deal with the horrors that happen to them or around them every day. That 16-year-old girl writing a rape/non-con fic under a pseudonym? She could be exorcising her own demons through the only way she has because no one in her life is listening to her. That 14-year-old writing about homelessness might know more about it than someone twice his age.
Expertise and experience knows no age, and as adults, we need to not fall into the trap of thinking it does. There are some kids out there that have seen and endured more than I can even imagine.
In recent years, there’s been this trend of treating kids like sexless beings until we, the adults, deem them capable of having a sense of sexuality. When the reality is, once kids start puberty, they’re developing that sexuality, and are trying to figure out what it means to them and how to navigate it, and the world. It doesn’t matter if adults are uncomfortable with it, this is what our human biology has decided for us.
And chances are, as much as adults try to curate the world and keep kids from seeing the darker, less safe stuff? They’re already doing it. I saw this when I was teaching, the kids are already accessing and interacting with stuff like sex, drugs, relationships… Whenever a faceless censor tries to block that sort of thing, they find a way around it. Humans are funny like that—we want the things that are kept away from us, whether harmful or not.
It’s our responsibility to help them think critically about what they’re seeing, and teach them to express themselves about it in a respectful manner.
So by all means: follow that amazing artist even if they are only 15. Their age doesn’t negate the fact that they have talent that needs to be nurtured and encouraged. Reblog the images and the fics that strike you, even if you find out the person writing it isn’t 18 yet. Send a shoutout via DM or review or comment to someone that you admire whether you know they’re age or not.
Unless you’re being actively creepy and offensive (and seriously, don’t do that, it’s gross whether the recipient is a minor or not), chances are these creators are desperate for some assurance that the medium they choose to express themselves in is having an effect on people—and that they have the power to make even adults sit up and listen.
So…TL;DR:
When interacting with younger fans, do so with respect. And if they say something problematic, don’t automatically cancel them and write them off as “obviously too young and immature to understand”. They understand more than you think and will seek out their interests whether adults think it’s appropriate or not. That’s how freedom works. But if we’re going to nip bad behavior like purity culture and agism in the bud, we need to start by treating minors in fandom as adults developing their worldview, not as infants to be sheltered.

fwiw i’m an A*3 volunteer - i do tag wrangling, actually - and i really do need to emphasise the fact that we are VOLUNTEERS, and there’s really nothing we can do when it comes to bigger issues re: the core of how the site runs and the values people feel it holds.
what i am really tired of is people assuming things about me because i’m a volunteer. people can be so ridiculously vitriolic - like that anon you got who was immediately at you like ‘SO YOU’RE FINE WITH CHILD ABUSE?’ is a perfect example of what i mean. no, i’m not, but i honestly do appreciate a rare space online that is *relatively* unmoderated - which is NOT to say it isn’t completely unmoderated. like you said, there are so many cultural aspects to even simple tags, and as a tag wrangler, you’re ‘trained’ on that. that’s just tag wrangling - i’m sure higher up volunteer positions also take the time and care to educate volunteers correctly on how to manage their roles.
again, though, there is fundamentally very little us volunteers can do for parts people might disagree with. we come from all walks of life and there are so many roles and we all only have so much time. fact is, the website is the way it and it’s unlikely to change beyond perhaps adding more ‘social media’ type functions, like blocking people. if you feel that there is content that is inappropriate or commenters that are inappropriate or whatever, you can report it directly to the people running the website (which i’ve personally done before for an extreme underage fic about a real life - albeit of-age - person), and i obviously didn’t check back to see if it had been removed, but i assume it was dealt with because i genuinely do have faith in the moderators. anyway, just some insight as someone who works with the site.
hey! thanks for the info actually this is really interesting. sorry about the delayed response, i saved it as a draft to come back to it later and then i got busy at work and forgot
while you're here, you mind if i ask you some questions? feel free not to answer, you're not obligated
i separated it into sections because i’m what? longwinded and easily confused
1. can this happen (has questions for you in it)
it's my understanding that the big uproar vis a vis CP fic on a*3 is more that a*3 is inadvertently creating a space where p*dophiles feel safe and can establish a following, in turn allowing them to normalize what they're doing and gain access to potential victims.
tldr, it's less "this is inappropriate" and more "the person who made this is dangerous." like, if the person who wrote that nasty fic you reported had a whole profile full of similar content and was gaining a following from it, that would be concerning.
is the overall effect a user has something that you all take into account when you're going through content on the site, or are you instructed to take the specific piece of content at face value?
and, do you think that's something it's possible to address by moderators? regardless of whether or not it’ll actually happen, do you think that is possible on this system?
and, even more optional than the other questions, if that was possible, what do you think that would look like?
2. what is the process like on your end (has questions for you in it)
just for my own curiosity, how much leeway do you as a volunteer have over whether a fic should be reported?
is it up to your own judgment or is there like a rubric or something?
and what happens if the moderators decide that yeah, this fic can't be up anymore, do they remove the fic or kill the user's profile or what?
what happens if you report something, and the moderators decide it’s fine? does that reflect on you in their eyes?
how often do you report fic?
3. clarification of motive (does not have questions for you in it, now i’m just talking)
like i hear you that you, personally, Anon J. Wranglerton, don't have control over the site itself. the topic of CP and abuse is touchy and wigs people out because it sort of self perpetuates.
it's like that anecdote that went viral a few years ago where a bartender explained that allowing one polite n*zi into the bar leads very quickly into lots of n*zis being in the bar. people want the n*zis removed from the bar.
i'm sorry people accuse you of being an abuse apologist because of that, i think the idea that people wouldn't really see abuse as a concern is like, actually horrifying to them lmao and i can't necessarily blame them for that in and of itself
4. if i see where they’re coming from then what’s my problem (does not have questions for you in it, now i’m just talking)
i guess i don't share that reaction because disgusting content online isn't anything new for me. i accidentally came across it all the time when i was a kid going online. i nearly fell victim to an actual predator when i was 12 or 13. thankfully, once he asked me for more personal information i was able to get scared and see some red flags. (or if he wasn’t a predator then i should probably go and find my chat room boyfriend Oukami who explained “yiffing” to me and told me to send him pictures of myself so he could make me a wolf fursona)
from my perspective, the a*3 debate looks like this: predators are a concept that is deeply embedded in every corner of the internet, and very suddenly, people are very up in arms about a very specific website having predators on it. it’s like if all of a sudden people were like, “there are customers at Target who yell at the employees. if you still shop at Target, unfollow me.”
like, yeah, you’re right, and that’s bad, but why Target specifically, and why now, you know?
i think predators should be made to feel extremely unsafe in fandom spaces lmao, but i also think that’s something that can only be tackled socially. playing whack-a-mole with predators is a tale as old as time.
5. online predators (does not have questions for you in it, now i’m just talking)
this is just me talking out of my ass, but my theory is that a huge component in kids today getting caught up by predators online is that the concept of anonymity and fear of strangers online has some holes in it on here.
first of all, people just a couple years younger than i am grew up on social media. that was the entire online landscape ever since myspace.
influencers use their real names and faces, and they have millions of followers and are treated like celebrities. a lot of these social networks make it extremely difficult to hide your identity at all. you sign in to youtube with your google account, which is linked to your phone and all your other accounts. instagram, twitter, facebook, and tumblr can all be connected, and a few of those apps encourage it and will interrupt you posting to be like “do you want to also put this on twitter, Firstname Lastname?” no, janet, i’m good. thank you though
this lends a certain amount of freedom to predators, because there is nothing stopping them from assessing somebody’s vulnerability and reaching out to them.
6. online predators in fandom spaces specifically (does not have questions for you in it, now i’m just talking)
i think the fandom space cultivated on tumblr has actively contributed to that.
look at all these blogs, they’ve got “about me” descriptions with their name, their age, a blurb about their interests, their gender identity, their romantic/sexual preferences, sometimes their fuckin myers-briggs designation. this is all expected behavior on tumblr.
it starts as a sort of “this is my blog, here’s what i’m about,” and is compounded by like, “NTs can reblog this post but don’t say anything stupid,” or “minors DNI, how old are you,” like, you have to kind of verify that you’re “allowed,” in a sense, to participate in some conversations or interact with some posts.
i think there’s merit in both of those things, blogs are for self expression and for interacting with likeminded users; and i don’t think it’s “gatekeeping” to stop straighties from clowning on your post about queer issues.
but this has inadvertently created a sort of entitlement to private information. it also creates this false idea that because you and i have x and y in common, we can interact comfortably.
it’s crucial to remember that predators aren’t all scary white men who want to visit you at home. some of them are cool 20-somethings who just happen to be normalizing sexual content with children in it. and they genuinely don’t see what they’re doing as wrong. if they’re already your friend, and you see them saying shit about how they’re not hurting anybody, it’s just pretend, it’s just a kink, then you’re probably going to sympathize with them.
this isn’t to say, “stupid kids, they’re bringing this on themselves by oversharing to the wrong people,” because it’s neither kids’ fault nor unique to children. this kind of oversharing is taking place with all ages and kinds of people on tumblr.
this is to say, this is what this particular subculture has caused: healthy boundaries are kind of bulldozed to make room for a kind of disorganized sense of community and morality.
7. back to CP on a*3 (does not have questions for you in it, now i’m just talking)
i think this kind of “CP is disgusting and you’re disgusting for looking at it” shit is dangerous.
things this is NOT because of:
CP deserves a place online
It’s A Slippery Slope, What Will They Ban Next
um, kinkshaming
there is no point in even trying to get predators off a*3
i just think it’s completely unhelpful. it’s literally a waste of their time. they’re wasting their time and hurting themselves and others in the process. it’s lacking in nuance and perspective.
what we should be saying is “CP is a red flag. CP tells you something about the person posting it.”
we shouldn’t be asking “are you okay with child abuse,” we should be asking, “what does this content say about the person posting it? are they unsafe to have around? if i realize too late that they’re unsafe, who can i turn to?” those are the kinds of questions we should be asking if our goal really is to protect people.
what the collection of block lists of supposed abuse apologists says is this: “you have to choose between not having to police online behavior, and proving your morals to me, a complete fucking stranger. if your morals are lacking, you’re out, we don’t speak to you anymore, and we tell everyone who will listen that you are a bad person.”
not to delegitimize their concerns, but it’s fully just mccarthyism. like... that’s what mccarthyism was like. the fact that mccarthyism was bad isn’t even the point, it’s important to recall that mccarthyism did not work. it stopped happening for myriad reasons, one of which was that it was hurting people and wasting resources and doing absolutely nothing else.
i obviously don’t want to be labeled “anti-american pinko scum” and fired from my job and disallowed from my neighbor’s house. who would? they’re not actually weeding out anybody dangerous, they’re just rounding people up who are just as angry as they are or who are scared of them lmfao.
ever since that shitty post of mine went viral (which - “viral,” i guarantee it isn’t viral, i stopped looking at it literally that night) i’ve been terrified that one of these days i’m gonna like, comment on something and have the OP be like “wait a minute, you’re that bitch who made fun of some anti-a*3 people, unfollow me” lmfao. like, that’s what this rhetoric is accomplishing.
i’m not boohooing, i deserved a slap on the wrist for making rude comments. i’m just telling you the extent of the results they’re getting. they made me feel sad. so at least there’s that.
8. anti-a*3 people (has questions for anyone in it)
“fine, so we’re not trying to evangelize for not liking CP. so what? we don’t want people who like CP around. supporting that stuff is disgusting. we are blocking them for our own safety and don’t appreciate the tone police coming in and telling us it’s no big deal.” - an anti a*3 person, probably
yeah i mean, i get that. if i was really upset about something important and somebody told me “you’re right, but shut up about it,” i would also be pissed.
my question, though, is this: is the underage tag on a*3 the limit we want to place on our activism against predators online? at minimum, is yelling at and blocking people about it on tumblr making us feel safer?
and also: how are we going to define the things we are trying to get rid of? what is underage? how do we account for differences in culture? how do we account for nuance when we make broad judgments?
and also: who do we really hold responsible for this? who do we think is at fault and what do we want them to do?
i feel like we could all benefit from some perspective here.
9. back to you (has questions for you in it)
so like, is it fun? how’d you get the position? how long do you work typically?
do you talk directly with higher-ups or whatever? do you have coworkers?
do you have to read through lots of fic yourself or does stuff get reported to you and then you look at it?
what other stuff do you report content for, aside from abusive content? like i read a post saying people shouldn’t be advertising their paypal or whatever on their a*3, do you nip stuff like that in the bud or is that something else?
what if it’s just mistagged, presumably by human error not by a legitimate abuse of the system, what do you do? do you tag it for them or do you reach out to them and tell them to fix it or what?
who decided on the color scheme? can there be a skin that’s orange and avocado green? can you pass that on for whoever does the colors? i think i’d spend more time on any particular website if the color scheme was a nice, desaturated orange and avocado green.
nice
