Anton Raphael Mengs (German, 1728–1779) Parnassus, after 1761 Hermitage Museum This painting represents a sketch or a replica, produced by the author himself, of the central part of the ceiling in the main hall of the Villa Albani in Rome. The plafond created by Mengs in the fresco technique, in 1761, was commissioned by Cardinal Alessandro Albani. In this painting Mengs broke away from Baroque tradition and turned to the conventions of Neoclassical art. The general composition is inspired by Raphael’s fresco ‘Parnas’ in Stanza della Segnatura in the Vatican Palace in Rome. In the centre is Apollo Mousagetes, the Sun God, patron of the arts and the leader of the Muses, with his attributes of a lyre, a crown on the head and a laurel wreath in his hand. Seated to his right is Mnemosyne, the mother of the Muses and the goddess of memory, as well as Clio, the Muse of history, Thalia, the Muse of comedy, and the dancing Erato and Terpsichore. To his left is Calliope, Polyhymnia, Euterpe, Melpomene and Urania. The painter depicts the Muses with their attributes. Clio’s features bear a close resemblance to those of Mengs's wife Margarita, while Mnemosyne has a likeness to Vittorucchia, the daughter of Countess Ceroffini.

[ The makeshift stage clears of the previous band, the crowd still cheering and clapping as they exit stage left. Leo passes their guitar pick through their fingers, trying to calm themself before climbing up the few stairs.
His hands are clammy. Gripping the guitar, he runs through an open string tuning sequence, A D G, and finally low D, brought down from the typical E tuning. He strums the individual strings again and again, until the stage right manager gestures to him to go towards the stage wing. They pass them an amp cord, which he quickly plugs into the bottom of the borrowed bass guitar.
He cracks his knuckles- playing guitar of any variety was exponentially harder with only three fingers- you only had two to manouver on the frets, and they were larger than human's, stiffer. Looking down at his now human hands, he prayed that he still knew how to play, now having twice the amount of fingers available than before.
Leo stands in darkness, the Emcee standing in front of him underneath the spotlight, a bird yokai with white and blue feathers. He couldn't play solely on his own, it wouldn't sound right if he did- A guitarist and drummer he had encountered earlier in the open mic sat behind him, also shrouded in darkness. ]
"Ladies, gentlemen, yokai of all shapes, sizes and genders, I welcome to the stage a new comer around these parts. Please give a warm welcome to The Muse: Euterpe." [She moves towards stage left, gesturing towards Leo and their backup band. The spotlight temporarily fades, darkening the stage and front rows of the crowd.
He takes a step towards the mic stand in front of them and takes a deep breath.
The spotlight comes on, illuminating him to the crowd, every feature and every flaw shining in the bright light, the black laquer of the bass guitar glistening.
He places his finger over the fourth fret of E, and gives a subtle nod to the musicians behind him.
He begins. ]
I don't know what to do without you, I don't know where to put my hand
I've been trying to lay my head down, but I'm writing this at three a.m.
I don't need the world to see that I've been the best I can be, but I don't think I can stand to be,
where you dont see me.

A young Dutch historian of the Near East on Herodotus as Father of History
“Daan Nijssen
The Histories of Herodotus: the Father of History
The Histories of Herodotus are the best known historiographical work from Antiquity. Other Greek and Roman historians have written longer and more accurate histories, but none of them has become as popular. The Histories were copied over and over again for nearly 2500 years and have survived almost intact. Why do the Histories of Herodotus fascinate us so much?
The Father of History Herodotus was the first one to write about the past in a systematic way, which earned him the title ‘father of history’. In his quest to find the ultimate cause of the Graeco-Persian Wars, Herodotus basically invented a new science. He needed to interview many people from across the known world, to determine the reliability of his informers and to balance conflicting accounts. He did not only try to reconstruct past events, but he also wrote about the cultural practices of the peoples and the geographical features of the lands that he discussed. For this reason, Herodotus could be considered not only as the father of history, but also as the father of anthropology and geography.
Herodotus as a storyteller Another reason why Herodotus is so popular, is that he speaks in an engaging way. I say ‘speaks’, because Herodotus’s work originally consisted of public lectures. He often directly addresses his audience and includes anecdotes and fun facts in his speeches. Herodotus is also notorious for his lengthy digressions. Whether or not that is a good thing is up to you. Personally I love these digressions, but I know people who loathe Herodotus for this reason. He often stops mid-story to talk about the most minute details for pages on end. When he resumes his story, the reader has often lost track of the original story. Despite the numerous digressions, Herodotus’s Histories do have a solid storyline. The work traces the conflict between Greeks and barbarians chronologically from the moment that the Lydian king Croesus subdued the Ionian city states (before 546 BC) up to the Battle of Mycale (479 BC), although he also refers to earlier periods in his digressions.
Summary Speaking of digressions, part of this is likely due to the fact that Herodotus himself did not edit his own books. These were compiled in Alexandria during the Ptolemaic period (323-30 BC), where scholars put Herodotus’s speeches in a chronological order. The speeches were spread out over nine books that were named after the nine Muses:
Book 1 (Clio) focuses on the origin of the conflict between Greeks and barbarians. Herodotus blames the Lydian king Croesus, the first one to subdue the independent Greek city states on the Ionian coast. Croesus, however, is quickly defeated by the Persian king Cyrus, who takes over the Ionian city states. The story then focuses on Cyrus, his rise to power and the conquests by which he created the Persian Empire. Herodotus gives specific attention to the conquest of Babylon and talks about the geography, history and culture of the land. Book 1 ends with Cyrus’s death at the hands of the Massagetae.
Book 2 (Euterpe) starts with Cambyses, Cyrus’s son, preparing to conquer Egypt. Herodotus soon shifts the attention to the geography, customs and history of Egypt. This digression encompasses all of book 2 and contains a lot of interesting yet dubious information. The book is an excellent example of how 5th century BC Greek intellectuals viewed Egypt; a country that they admired for its antiquity.
Book 3 (Thalia) deals with Cambyses’s conquest of Egypt and his subsequent madness, which led to his early death. After Cambyses’s death, a magos (priest) pretending to be Cambyses’s late brother Smerdis usurps the throne, but seven Persian nobles discover this plot and kill the usurper. Darius, the leader of the seven, then takes over the Persian throne. Towards the end, book 3 contains many digressions about the affairs on the Greek island Samos and about the geography and culture of India and Arabia.
Book 4 (Melpomene) deals with Darius’s wars in Scythia and Libya. The book contains lengthy digressions about the geography of these lands and about the cultural practices of both the Scythians and their neighbors and the peoples of Africa. This book can tell us a lot about how the ancient Greeks viewed those whom they considered ‘less civilized’. This book also describes the geography of the known world. The map below is based on his information.
Book 5 (Terpsichore) deals with the Persian conquest of Thrace and the Ionian Revolt that lay at the origin of the Graeco-Persian Wars.
Book 6 (Erato) deals with Darius’s campaign against Athens, known as the first Graeco-Persian War, and includes a description of the famous battle of Marathon.
Book 7 (Polymnia) deals with Xerxes’s campaign against Athens and Sparta, known as the second Graeco-Persian War. It also contains many digressions about other deeds of Xerxes. Towards the end of book 7 we find a description of the famous battle of Thermopylae.
Book 8 (Urania) deals with the sea battles at Artemisium and Salamis between the Athenian fleet and the allied Persian and Phoenician fleets.
Book 9 (Calliope) deals with the battle of Plataea and the sea battle of Mycale. The book ends rather abruptly, which indicates that Herodotus did not finish his work the way he originally intended.
Reliability Because of his long-lasting popularity, Herodotus has been the main authority on the history of the ancient world for centuries. The fact that Herodotus has long been our only source of information on these civilizations has also contributed to this. Until the 19th century we did not have any contemporary oriental sources and archaeology was still underdeveloped. Nowadays, however, archaeological research and oriental sources like cuneiform clay tablets, hieroglyphs and papyri have given us more accurate information about these peoples. Many pieces of information from the Histories have since been proven wrong, like parts of Herodotus’s description of Egypt, the city plan of Babylon and many statements about the distant past. Other pieces of information have been confirmed, like Darius’s coup against the magos who pretended to be Cambyses’s brother Smerdis, many of the barbaric customs of the Scythians, and the ‘huge, furry, gold digging ants’ of the Himalayas, who apparently were marmots. Overall, Herodotus knowledge of the ancient world in a time when a historian only had oral traditions at his disposal is certainly impressive. Herodotus is also quite objective in his research. Although he shows a slight bias towards the Greeks, he is less ethnocentric than most of his contemporaries and often shares his own doubts with his audience. Furthermore, thanks to his engaging tone people of all times and all places can relate to him. Reading his work gives us an insight not only into the outer appearance of the ancient world, but also into the mind of a curious 5th century BC Greek intellectual.
Translations Numerous translations of the Histories of Herodotus exist. The most widely used ones – those of Rawlinson (1860) and Godley (1920) – are written in highbrow Cambridge English. This adds a certain prestige, but it makes Herodotus look like a Cambridge professor, which of course he was not. He was a passionate storyteller speaking to a vast audience. Modern translations capture this aspect of the Histories better and often include up-to-date prefaces and commentaries. Good examples of modern, annotated translations are those edited by Marincola (1996) and by Strassler (2007).

Very good introductory article. But I think that it is beyond doubt that, even if (as many scholars believe) Herodotus’ work started as a collection of different logoi, it took its current written form and shape as a continuous narrative by Herodotus himself. The Alexandrians only divided it to nine books, to which they gave the name of the nine Muses.
More particularly concerning Egypt, I add to what the author writes that, if  it is true that “parts of Herodotus’s description of Egypt...have been proven wrong”, Herodotus’ Book II on Egypt is the first extant comprehensive account of a foreign civilization. In this quality, and despite all its flaws from a modern point of view, this Book is a milestone in the effort to know foreign cultures and civilizations (this expression is of the eminent Egyptologist Barry Kemp) and, therefore, a milestone in the intellectual history of humanity. Moreover, of course there are errors and inaccuracies in it, something totally explainable given the many objective and subjective obstacles that Herodotus had to face in his effort to understand the Egyptian history and civilization, but, on the other hand, Herodotus’ Book II contains also a lot of accurate and useful information on the Egypt of the Late Period (see for instance about what important Egyptologists say on this topic https://aboutanancientenquiry.tumblr.com/post/679593082776403968/the-leading-egyptologist-salima-ikram-talks-to , .https://aboutanancientenquiry.tumblr.com/post/670420364974833664/the-portuguese-egyptologist-r-sousa-on-the , https://aboutanancientenquiry.tumblr.com/post/670501382477971456/the-egyptologist-j-fr-quack-on-herodotus

EVENT: BIRTHSDAY
Happiest of birthdays to Theo and Daniel, who fortuitously have Earth birthdays very close together! The two will be celebrating in style at the hippest bar/nightclub in the vicinity of the Theme Park Club's clubhouse on the Earth equivalent of October 29, 2023.
The venue itself is called "Seven" because the building is seven-sided- a heptagon, if you will. Each of the walls in this adults-only club is painted a different color. The colors are somewhat muted with some grayish tones, but definitely distinct in color:
Red wall: Bar
Purple wall: Bathroom (enclosed space, features a small chamber that you can enter for a fee if you need to rehydrate)
Green wall: Bar
Orange wall: Booths and tables
Beige wall: Entrance
Yellow wall: Bar
Magenta wall: Photos of patrons
Regarding the picture wall... anyone can put up their picture if they ask the bartenders at the green wall bar. Some of these patrons are moderately famous. Qjun has about ten pictures on the wall with various patrons. Junyi is possibly in three pictures. However, she is aggressively blurry in two and it's only the top of her head in one of the others... so it's hard to tell. Oplo is in one of the pictures. He is kissing his wife in it. They look very happy to be at Seven while wearing those hats with crazy straws attached.
The most important thing to note about this club is that pets are allowed! There is a cover fee for your pet, but the yellow wall's bar sells treats for many common pets on this planet. However, one out of every four days, pets are not allowed at all. Luckily(?) this is a day where pets are allowed.
The doorman recommends to all guests that they read the menus before ordering anything, but doesn't say why. The drinks here are varied. There are a few trendy Earth-style drinks (for some reason, the bartenders call every kind of the pricy imported Earth beer a pilsner), but the real fun comes with the house specials. The house specials are vibrant, brightly colored drinks named after the nine muses. The Urania and The Euterpe are toxic to anybody but carreki, and will make anyone who isn't a carrek quite ill. Vanniree might be a little better off than other species, but not by much. The Melpomene contains some semi-illegal hallucinogenics. All of the drinks are formulated to give a great experience for carreki, though.
The water served at this club is exceptionally clear and pure. The food is almost exclusively soup. Sweet soup, savory soup, watery soup... Whatever you can think of, you can purchase from the red bar, and add a variety of crunchy fixings.
Outside food is allowed in only if it is to celebrate a special occasion such as a birthday, anniversary, graduation, or evading the law.
The music is popping. There's quite the variety of music, from EDM remixes of local folk songs, to German metal, to 70s disco music. You never really know what you will get, but it all has a good beat to dance to. The DJ (located in the center of the bar) does take requests for a small fee.
The crew of Prosperity are invited to attend this splendid birthday party! The party event is a costume party... but none of the other people at the bar are going to be wearing costumes because they don't really understand what Halloween is. Also the Theme Park Club Members will be there too. Everyone is hopeful that the birthday boys and their friends enjoy the night!

It's been a while since I posted about Dead Cells but I think that it's nice that this game features women who are canonically and overtly stronger than the protagonist and it's not made a joke at his or their expense.
The Time Keeper wields extremely large, heavy swords- you can find where she keeps them, and Prisoner notes they're a little too heavy for him to wield.
The Gilded Yumi, the signature weapon of Euterpe of the Servants, is a weapon she personally handles with ease- while Prisoner can equip and use it efficiently, his arms visibly shake in the draw animation.
And it's, not a joke? it's neutral information. They have different capabilities. Prisoner himself is not weak- he's able to swing weapons like the broadsword, or Calliope's wrecking ball (I haven't acquired it yet to be able to say if he modifies that too). On the bladed tonfa, Prisoner even remarks in awe how Kleio can use such an unwieldy weapon skillfully.
I think there's never going to be one ironclad recipe for "girl power" but for me, personally, my favorite flavor is "women exist, and they're competent, and they might be stronger than some men, in the way that some men are stronger than each other, and some women are stronger than each other, because people exist and have properties that are really not that affected by their gender".

"Harlequin" Jewellery
The name "harlequin" was often used to describe jewellery set with many different coloured gemstones. It's in reference to Harlequin, one of the "comic servant" characters from the Italian Commedia dell’Arte tradition who was introduced in the late 16th century and popularised by Tristano Martinelli, the "Master of Harlequins". Characterised by his brightly chequered costume, he usually served as a direct contrast, sometimes in competition, with the sterner and melancholic Pierrot. The role was that of an astute, nimble, and overly light-hearted servant who would often attempt to thwart the plans of his master while pursuing his own love interest, Columbina.
Tumblr media
Stunning Victorian harlequin necklace, circa 1880 (above). It's fully strung with natural seed pearls and 19 individual gemstone drops including: blue sapphire cabochon, white sapphire, almandine garnet, chrysoprase, opal, hessonite garnet, turquoise, mabe pearl, emerald, ruby, and tourmaline (with some duplicates). Each of the gemstone settings features three seed pearl drops at the bottom as well as the collet-set central gem. Crafted in 9 karat gold with original barrel clasp and safety chain still present.
Tumblr media
A gorgeous Georgian Harlequin Flower Brooch dating from the early 19th Century, circa 1800. The stones are foil backed, and display beautiful muted hues - they include: citrine, topaz, garnet, and a central rock crystal (with black dot culet). Modelled in 9 karat gold with cut down settings typical of the period.
Tumblr media
This antique brooch is divine. It's modelled in 15k gold, intricately worked in the regency style, and set with a Harlequin rainbow of gemstones around a central shell cameo. I believe the piece depicts the nine Classical Muses: a Lyre for Epic Poetry (Calliope), Dance (Terpsichore), and Love Poetry (Erato); an Aulos (ancient form of flute) for Music (Euterpe); the Globe and Compass for Astronomy (Urania); the Theatre Mask for Comedy (Thalia) and Tragedy (Melpomene); and a Broken Column for History (Clio); and finally, the harlequin multi-coloured gemstones represents Agriculture (Polyhymnia) - as in a bountiful harvest.
A few more examples below...

Alright! Here I'm! Expect at least 5 requests from me!
Ikemen Sengoku: Mitsuhide Akechi + Earth + Willow + Euterpe
Ah I like a woman that knows what she wants from a fic ^_^ Mitsuhide (of course)! Approx. 560 words on themes of Earth, Willow - nurturing, Euterpe - delight.
Mitsuhide laughed.
His pupil, the chatelaine of Azuchi, scowled at him and crossed her arms. “You know what? If you’re just going to mock me, then I quit. I don’t want to go anyway.”
“Little mouse, you must admit that was funny. I didn’t know you could get tangled in your own sleeves like that.” He closed the distance between them. “This is half untied, and your hem got tucked in to the back of your obi . . .” Mitsuhide began to adjust her costume, enjoying the excuse to touch her. To stand so close.
Her breath quickened at his familiarity and a flush crept up her cheeks. “I - I can fix it myself.”
“You can,” he agreed, still smoothing the fabric, shifting it slightly so that she might be more comfortable. “Now, if you’re done whining, let’s move through the dance again. Without falling, hm?”
She scowled. “I’m not clumsy.”
“Of course not. You are as graceful as a dove.” He couldn’t help but pretend to tuck a loose hair behind her ear. She was adorable when she was angry.
She huffed, but got into position.
Mitsuhide moved into the same position directly in front of her, mirroring. “Now, step left. Lift your foot slowly. Your hand moves out, yes - “ he moved through the dance with her, slow and careful.
This time, she did not falter. She watched his movements with studied focus, biting her lower lip in concentration. When she got to the last step she pumped her fist. “I did it!”
“You did,” he smiled, his expression tender. “At half speed. Repeat, again.”
“You are the worst,” she retorted, but she was smiling too.
They moved through the steps together, again and again. Moving faster each time. She began to laugh as she moved, delight etching her features with sublime light. She was grounded, her feet solid on the earth below; her hands moved elegantly through the air.
Mitsuhide felt it too, that connection to this world - and to her. Their eyes met, gazes held. Their fingers almost touched. He wished he could hold this moment, freeze it in time, but when she finished the last step, she stopped.
“That was good, right?”
“It was perfect.”
She smiled so bright that he felt almost blinded by her joy. Then, without warning, she brushed a kiss across his cheek. “Thank you for teaching me.”
“If a kiss is the reward, let me know what else you want to learn.” He tried to hide his own heated cheeks and the sudden, wild beat of his heart.
Her eyes darted away from him, shy again. “I was thinking I would like to try it with music.”
“Then next time, I will sing for you.” He leaned close, letting his breath whisper across her cheek, as close to a kiss as he dared. “Or perhaps, next time I’ll make you sing. I can imagine how pretty you sound. Would you like that, little mouse?”
She pushed him away, her whole face hot now. “You are so mean! Stop teasing me and be serious.”
“I am serious! We will go over some songs as well. Why? What did you think I meant?” His eyes danced with merriment.
Her mouth opened and closed again. “N-nothing. I need to go now. So. See you tomorrow!” And then she was gone, leaving him with the bittersweet ache in his chest. A constant companion in her absence.

MASTERING YOUR GRIMOIRE: WRITING YOUR DEDICATION
Tumblr media
By Willow
Over the past week we spent time laying out our grimoires and developing a rough draft for our table of contents. There are several really great resources out there to help you figure out how to organize your grimoire. Upon doing some research, I decided to use LaPulia's Book of Shadows as a guide. Now this is a Wiccan book and therefore many sections or pages wouldn't be included in my book, but it is a really great, comprehensive table of contents. Their Traditional Witchcraft Grimoire also has some really great ideas that I will be using as well. Another great resource for organizing your grimoire is The Dance at Alder Cove's table of contents. This list is pretty comprehensive as well, providing you with some ideas if you aren't sure where to start.
Tumblr media
Right now I have only organized and planned a couple sections. The reason for this is that planning too far in advance and jumping around while working could come back to bite you in the butt if you are working with a bound book where you can't easily move pages. This is what I am working with and as I work on a little bit at a time I have already found myself moving things around. The current sections I have planned are listed in order below:
Title Page Table of Content The Craft (section title)     Dedication     Blessing     Pentagram     Witch's Creed     What is a Hedgewitch?     13 Goals of a Witch     Self Dedication (to the craft) Basics of Magic (section title)     What is Magic?     Magical Theory and Technique     Grounding and Centering     Energy     How to Direct Energy     Meditation     Pathwalking     Hedge Riding     How to Hedge Ride     Ways to Reach Altered State of Consciousness     Three Realms of Otherworld     Hedge Riding Prep and Etiquette     Animal and Spirit Guides     My Guides The Elements (section title)     Earth Intro     Tools of Earth and How to Use with Other Elements     Earth Correspondences     Air Intro     Tools of Air and How to Use with Other Elements     Air Correspondences     Fire Intro     Tools of Fire and How to Use with Other Elements     Fire Correspondences     Water Intro     Tools of Water and How to Use with Other Elements     Water Correspondences     Spirit Sabbats (section title)     Wheel of the Year (picture)     About the Wheel of the Year     Samhain Introduction     Samhain History and Lore     Samhain Traditions     Samhain Correspondences     Samhain Plants     Samhain Recipes     Samhain Crafts *I have not finished my Sabbat planning because I am not sure how many recipes and crafts I would like to include at this time.
Tumblr media
As I mentioned in Organizing Your Grimoire, you should have made room in the first couple pages for a dedication and a blessing, which you can see I did. One of the first things to put in your book is your dedication. Now this isn't a dedication to the craft, but a dedication to working on your grimoire and continuing to learn. Your Self Dedication will be your dedication to the craft. The dedication featured within the first page or two is basically a promise to yourself, the deities you believe in, and your grimoire that you will continue to learn and grow as a witch. During the next two weeks write your dedication and decorate the page(s). Begin your rough draft on a separate sheet of paper. If you are working with a digital format, work right in your book. Spend time reflecting on what you want to say. It can be in the form of poetry or prose; whatever speaks to you. I prefer poetry so my dedication is written in such a format. Are you going to ask the elements for guidance in the creation of your grimoire? Air is associated with wisdom, fire with inspiration, water with justice, and earth with patience. What about any deities? Apollo, Euterpe, Bragi, Kvasir, Brigid, Sarasawti, Tir, Seshat, Al-Kutbay, Nabu, and Nidaba are all gods and goddesses of writing and poetry from various traditions. Requesting their aid in the assembly of your grimoire would be wise if you follow their tradition. Are you going to dedicate the grimoire to one of these deities or just Mother Earth? What would you like the pages to be filled with? Why do you want to complete your grimoire? Remember to refer back to your Mapping Your Magical Path for guidance in the creation of your dedication. Once you have written your dedication and are happy with it, transfer it to your book in your best handwriting (or type, print, and paste it). Then proceed to decorate the page. Feel free to use symbols associated with inspiration and writing such as the rune Ansuz or the sun. Prefer more natural symbols? Draw Begonias to encourage deep thoughts, Black-Eye Susans for encouragement, Irises for inspiration, or Hazel and Maple for wisdom. Be sure to fill this page with your energy. As you work, envision your energy filling the pages. The color of your energy is entirely dependent on your personality. Mine tends to be green and gold and occasionally pink, yellow, or gray. Funny how these are the same colors I have used to decorate my entire home and my grimoire. How did you end up organizing your grimoire? Share below in the comments, email, or through Facebook. And good luck writing your dedications!
