Thinking about Loop vs Siffrin and how much their "directing" differs considering their circumstances.

Siffrin's "directing" centers on his guilt for wanting more. While the first rounds of getting something good are fine (family runs in particular), as he stops feeling as authentic, he feels more like a manipulator. The world feels less and less real thus he is setting this all up their own gain. It gets worse before it gets better, and at the end, this is ALL about Siffrin redoing a perfect ending for himself. Trying to get the results he wants to see what will change. Notably this change is to get out of the loops ultimately, there is a drive to get something else out of what is becoming a clearly limiting sense of two days.

Loop on the other hand. That goes into the tone of sasasaap. Mainly. Loop is in a death march. For 99% of the time, Loop NEVER got any happy ending for their actions. While you can argue there's a sense of comfort in keeping their friends in the dark, Loop ultimately doesn't want to be the one to break the news that their entire journey was for NOTHING. That this will always end in death. That their banter and fun will always end in tragedy. So they keep up smiles. They act. They direct and pretend that all is going well. Forever being that comforting precense their friends "need". Again. And again. And again. Ultimately it's that vulnerability that let's Loop win against the King, but it's too little too late. Before they can get to the real issues behind the loops, they're too exhausted from their death march to keep going.

For Siffrin, the time loop is that favorite food metaphor. It's an overindulgence with no rest, no change. A too little sandbox that they can't get out of. Burning sugar if you will on an empty stomach.

For Loop, they're playing out their final moments over and over again. They hide this fact from their loved ones in hopes of keeping this overwhelming despair from crushing them too. They still could have reached out, asked for help, but by the time they realized there were no options left already martyred themself to a doomed fate of forever pretending everything is fine.

In the newest MTG set Duskmourn they released 15 new cards named "The Fear Of (something)," and they *almost* fit Smirke's fourteen. Surprisingly there weren't any related to violence (not directly anyway, I only counted each card as being for one entity) or bugs or disease.

I imagined a scene and wanted to share.

Leo is in the middle of a panick attack, huddled in his room wrapped in blankets and completely sure torture is going to start at any moment because he can't seem to remember that he is out, he is (semi, kinda) okay.

Kirby comes in because he heard dad's whimpers. They've always been good at detecting what dad was feeling and always act according to what makes him more comfortable. Sometimes it's being quiet and going to hang out somewhere dad won't see them, but sometimes they know if dad don't see them he won't get out of his own head.

Something in dad's cries are familiar and painful, and that's new. They decide to take the risk. So Kirby comes in with a bunch of peeled fruits in a plate (prepared to them by Ji-san but dad doesn't need to know that part).

Leo sees Kirby, and they are prepared to bolt running if dad starts crying again. And it clicks. He doesn't remember being free but he knows if Kirby is there it means he isn't about to be hurt. He sobs a relieved gasp and Kirby feels self counscious, but doesn't go awaym

The kid offers him a strawberry and sits on their dad's lap. The taste of the fruit and the presence of the child, the way Kirby hands another strawberry as soon as Leo puts the first in his mouth, the weight and height difference of the child he remembers from the hallucination and this one.

Leo smiles and Kirby smiles back, churring to reassure their dad that it's okay. And they're a big turtle now, they can protect him if the big baddie comes back.

And it's after this specific situation Leo starts to develop into Dad LeoTM.

Being unable to leave a horrific place designed to mess with their own insecurities. This causes them to trap themselves in the same place as much as the situation itself is trapping them. Leaving their own perpetual hells is scarier than staying because at least they always know not only what type of awful horrors they will face here but that in staying they never have to truly confront their own shortcomings and inability to connect with other people.
