I’ve finally finished the incredible show that is Stargate Atlantis and I. Have. Thoughts.

I watched Vegas and Enemy at the Gates together (on the advice of my sga leader @lightthewaybackhome) and I’m so happy I did.

So Vegas feels like a different show entirely, from the filming to the characters. Sheppard does not seem like Sheppard nor does anyone else. They’re all darker, more broken versions. My heart was just broken the whole time, but I didn’t cry until I saw Rodney though. This is the Rodney without his Sheppard to guide him and help him. This is the Rodney who lets Keller pass him by. This is the Rodney that lets Sheppard go alone. This is Rodney without a Sheppard that lit up Atlantis (this is honestly worse than last man but it’s a good parallel).

This is the Sheppard that goes alone on yet another suicide mission because he’s lost everything anyway…and then he dies. While Johnny Cash’s “Solitary Man” plays. Because that’s who Sheppard is, not the man in black saving the world with his people, but the solitary man who is alone without a home and no chance to be healed. And yet still he sacrifices himself and is brave and dies saving the world. Sheppard becomes the action hero at the end of the movie that goes out guns blazing and, while it’s usually cool to see, this one just breaks our hearts.

And then we move to the finale and…oh! Sheppard is Sheppard again, and Rodney is Rodney and everyone is okay.

And we see the parallels between the Vegas world and ours throughout the episode. Sheppard about to go on a suicide mission stops right at the last moment because Rodney’s voice breaks through the radio. The team is about to die blowing up the hive ship but stops because Atlantis is there in time to save them. Atlantis is lit up because of Sheppard. And then we see them all at the end. They’re happy, and alive and not broken.

And even though they aren’t fully healed, cause who ever is in this life, they’re on the path to healing. There’s hope, there’s light that has broken through the darkness (the way the show ends with the light piercing through the clouds is so beautiful in a literal and metaphorical sense like I’m sobbing).

There’s a couple lines from songs that my Sheppard told me about that is forever linked with SGA now. Ghosts That We Knew has a beautiful line, “So give me hope in the darkness that I will see the light”. Throughout the show there’s so much darkness and pain, but we stick through it with the team because there’s hope that it’ll be okay. There’s hope because John is there, because they’re all there right where they should be. It’s a beautiful metaphor for life.

And then there’s a song called Hospital for Souls. It’s mainly a Sheppard song, as he lets himself burn for his family, but it’s also how Atlantis is a hospital for all the broken souls and brings them together. It’s why Sam didn’t stay there long and Woolsey came on board. It’s why Ronon says at the end that he is home. It’s why Teyla chooses to stay and raise her son in Atlantis instead of her home world. Why Rodney waits 48000 years for Sheppard and why Sheppard realizes finally that he doesn’t have to die to be redeemed, that living and healing is possible for even him.

It’s been a wonderful journey watching this show, it’s changed me, helped me grow and made me realize that healing is possible for even me. That a family is what you make it and they can be your hospital for your soul no matter how weary, broken or hurt.

I just love this show. I’m immediately gonna start rewatching it from the beginning because this. This is my family, my home. I’ve found myself in the darkness of Sheppard and the outlierness of Rodney. In the fierce love of Ronon and sisterly bond of Teyla.

I’m ever so grateful my friend got me to watch this, so happy that I went through the darkness into the light with my team, through tears and shouts of joy. I always said Supernatural would be the only show with this kind of life-changing, life-saving impact. But Stargate Atlantis now holds that honor too, this little, cheesy, ridiculously funny and terribly sad series has changed my life, helped me be the person I wanted to be for so many years but always struggled with (yeah I’m louder, complain more and am maybe a bit more annoying but gosh it’s more fun) and just generally helped me with so many endless things. And I’ve found some great friends and got closer to one of my best friends, aka my Sheppard lol.

Anyway, all this to say that this show is beautiful and incredible and please do yourself the honor of watching it but definitely bring tissues. Don’t worry too much about why they wear sneakers for like two seasons or their military tactics are off, but just enjoy the friendship, the humor, and how wonderful it shows that it doesn’t matter how messed up you are. How dark you’ve gotten or how many pieces of your soul you’ve sacrificed for others. You can be redeemed and healed and made whole. You can find people who love you despite your flaws and shortcomings. And you can find the light no matter how dark the world has become. You too can be home.

talk to me about bojack horseman! Specifically your most unpopular opinions. I was on the Diane Defender Team for a long time and I remember a lot of men hated me for that lol. Luckily tumblr was cool.

Oh god how I love Bojack Horseman! It’s one of those very few shows that I would just….highly highly recommend to anyone & everyone to watch from start to finish & that I have very very few criticisms of like. It just had a perfect arc & every character was explored so thoughtfully & the ending hit every note I could’ve ever wanted. One of my top favorite shows of all time.

It’s SO hard to know what opinions I have that are unpopular given the lack of “fandom” the show has - which makes sense, it’s not really the type of show I’d read fanfic or “ship” characters in so like. I GET it but I also don’t know what opinions I have that are unpopular because I’m not familiar with the fandom opinions lol!

Like. People hate my best friend Diane??? I’ve heard it said that she’s hated before & I’ve watched a LOT of “in defense of Diane Nguyen” type video essays but I’ve also (thankfully) not seen people hating on her. I’m sorry I hate to be that person because subjective taste is a thing but I’m sorry if you hate Diane you’ve entirely missed the point? She’s so integral! Diane’s arc is so important!

Diane is the kind of character that a lesser show would make the “good kind feminist counterpart to BJ” but that Bojack Horseman (the show not necessarily always the character) recognized as a real messy flawed three dimensional human who YES calls Bojack on his shit but is often accidentally awful to both Bojack & everyone else in her mission to be a “good” person.

Diane is the picture of what idealism in a cynical world can lead to in a negative way. She wants to be this bold feminist with strong beliefs that will fight for what’s right but she often forgets the people around her in the frenzy of her fight to do what she perceives as “good.” And her arc!!!! I get so emotional thinking about Diane’s arc - about her relationship with Princess Carolyne & how Carolyn advised her to just write the schlocky detective books that made her happy because it’s the kind of stuff she’d want her daughter to get to read & about how she realizes that she doesn’t have to make her trauma beautiful she doesn’t have to make it her whole personality she can just write & have fun! And like. We see her give up on some of her ambitions & gain weight & accept that she needs to let go of her incredibly toxic friendship with Bojack & that’s okay & doesn’t have to mean she hates him or that either of them are evil - her arc is so incredibly real & relatable & unlike anything we typically see on TV & I love it.

Okay that wasn’t an unpopular opinion(or maybe it was? I hope not) it was just me rambling about how much I love Diane Nguyen but like. I really really do.

Bojack Horseman depicts so many things - generational trauma & toxic friendships & romantic & familial relationships & the way we traumatize other people because of our own trauma & the ability of ANYONE to grow & change even the most toxic horrible person you can imagine even if it takes decades to get there - that you just don’t see on regular tv. And it does it through funny talking cartoon animals so it’s not boring & it never feels pretentious just like it’s telling a story. And while it CAN be depressing it knows how to perfectly balance the vibe of comedy & absurdity so it’s not just painful to watch like it would be in live action or with human characters without the absurdist comedy aspect & it just perfectly balances entertainment with hard hitting themes.

Anyway. I don’t know what the popular & unpopular opinions are this just turned into me rambling about my love for the show. Thank you for coming to my ted talk & thank you for sending an ask 🫶🫶🫶

Thank you so much for the tag @davenswitcher ❤ I want to be super clear here that this is going to be my favorite shows - not necessarily the ones I think are the most impeccably written, but the ones that hold very real real estate in my heart. Also, heads up: There will be a lot of anime because I was a geek long before that was cool.

1. One Piece

Gonna start with a cheat because yes, the anime adaptation is rather meh past a certain point (Toei's at least; let's see what WIT does with it), but damn, this story is etched into my soul. It's the first story I ever remember theorizing about, trying to predict what Oda would do next. I grew up with it and, in contrast to so many other shonen anime, this one grew with me. It's so very special to me and I will never be the same after it ends.

2. Fullmetal Alchemist (Brotherhood)

A flawless story from start to finish. I could write all my life and never rival what  Hiromu Arakawa did here.

3. Gossip Girl

The early seasons of Gossip Girl were peak television and Blair Waldorf will forever be an icon.

4. A Place Further Than the Universe

Girl friendships at their best. I am not a crier, in general, but this one makes me bawl my eyes out every goddamn time.

5. Haikyu!!

Here's a little something about me: I love stories about athletes. Maybe it's the overachiever in me, I don't know, but goddamn, do they get to me. Would take a bullet for Bokuto any day of the week.

6. Cobra Kai

Yes, it's been going downhill since Netflix bought it, I know, I know. But never will you find a more original, more shamelessly entertaining take on all your martial arts fantasies than in this show. Also, Sensei Lawrence curing Miguel's asthma by telling him to pull himself together will never not be iconic.

7. Gravity Falls

A summer with Gruncle Stan would fix us all, let's be honest.

8. My Roommate is a Cat

A grief-stricken, socially awkward author adopts a cat and learns that the world is so much bigger than his work deadlines. Do I have to explain why I relate to it? Also, this cat single-handedly inspired 99% of Objection's lines in MA.

9. Parks & Recreation

The ultimate comfort show. The perfect example why sometimes, it's better to go small rather than big.

10. Avatar - The Last Airbender

This one needs no words. Except for this: Zutara totally should have happened.

1. Who is your favourite character in 2?

No question, it's Jaskier. My absolute baby. The main character. There is no one else.

2. Who is your least favourite character in 1?

Can I pick Kang since he manipulated Loki even when he was in the TVA and not in the sacred timeline? And everyone else he controlled.

3. What's your favourite episode of 4?

Episode 5. It's very Riley-centric and he's my fave from this show. He deals with a lot this episode.

4. What is your favourite season of 5?

Lmao, I could go out on a limb and say S2, but since we don't even have a trailer yet, I'm gonna stick with S1.

5. What's your favourite relationship in 3?

Wesper. A close second is Kanej. But Wesper are my absolute fave.

6. Who is your anti relationship in 2?

Not really into Yenralt on their own. As a poly with Jaskier, yes. Mainly, that ship needs more Jaskier in it.

I've watched through twice completely and watched various parts over and over on occasion.

8. How did you become interested in 3?

The show came out on Netflix. We watched the first episode. Partner didn't like it. I went away and starred reading the books, then went back and watched the show. Then I realised I was missing something, which was Six of Crows and I started reading those books, too.

9. Who is your favourite actor in 4?

Hamish Linklater is amazing. The way he plays John/Paul is so good.

10. Which show do you prefer 1, 2 or 5?

Oooh, hard one. At the moment, with a bi bard becoming an actuality that will be shown-on-screen canon, I'm gonna go with The Witcher.

Of course, we have lots of queer rep in OFMD but I'm very obsessed with Jaskier, if you can't tell.

11. Which show have you seen more episodes of 1 or 3?

There are more episodes in Shadow and Bone, so that one.

12. If you could be anyone from 4, who would you be?

Warren Flynn. I live.

13. How would you kill off your favourite character in 5?

Buttons sets fire to the ship in a last ditch attempt to distract the big bads and let everyone escape, before he dives into the welcome arms of the sea.

14. Would a 3/4 crossover work?

Saints and God. Alina having to go to Crockett Island to get an amplifier, which is the Angel.

Or Saints vs God. Each side trying to wow more followers by having better miracles.

Could be something in it.

15. Pair two characters in 1 that would make an unlikely, but strangely okay couple.

Okay, total crack. Casey and Miss Minutes.

16. Overall, which show has the better cast, 3 or 5?

That's difficult because I love, love, love the Six of Crows characters, but I have to say Our Flag Means Death has a great cast overall.

I feel like Yellowjackets is one of those shows that should be like. Someone would tell me - oh, rose, it has complex sibling dynamics, a bad bitch scary bisexual who’s the kindest of all deep down, constant dyke drama, cannibalism, necrophilia, supernatural drama that may or may not be just good ol’ trauma manifesting it’s hard to say, cults, found family but make it toxic etc just. All my favorite tropes. Then I’d watch it & it’d be mid. But in reality I watch it again & again & every single time I’m like “wow . Ok. Wow. this is actually legitimately truly peek television.” Like in a world where I’m constantly complaining that there’s no more good television Yellowjackets somehow manages to exist. Amazing. Baffling

What I love about Andor (spoilers arguable)

How it frames law and morality is very interesting. Every. Single. Hero in this story is a criminal, at the very least in a purely legal sense. They are thieves, embezzlers, murderers, smugglers and terrorists. They aren’t just branded as such, they are these things as much as anyone is in the real world.

There’s a discussion to be had about the recuperation of revolutionary thought by the Disney corporation, for sure. But I love how it shows that lawful people not only do not, but can not overthrow a fascist regime. It requires crime, not just because dissent is criminalized, but because resistance to the state and the police is required. There is no lawful answer to a government that secretly murders and tortures people and blows up planets to consolidate its tyranny. Every lawful person is a cop, every loyal cop is protecting the people who torture and exploit you.

Syril Karn is such a good example of this. On the surface he just wants to solve the murder of two cops. His superior, of course, chalks up their deaths to their own corrupt shakedowns. And he is right! That’s not even why he doesn’t want Syril to look into it too hard though. If Syril had been less lawful, so many people could have been spared.

Of course, that could have indirectly resulted in a timeline where Cassian doesn’t join the rebellion and the Empire just... wins. But in a way, this show isn’t about Cassian as this great historical figure. It’s about how the Empire, in its obsession with control, creates its own downfall. Cassian isn’t special. He’s one of many criminals the Empire created, and through skill and a lot of luck, the one who survives to be in the right place in the right time.

We are told that had things worked out differently, it could have been Taramyn, or Gorn or Kino or Nemik or any of a million other defiant outlaws that spelled the empire’s doom. It is all of them, together, laying down their lives in service of the rebellion that brought the empire down. Not a Great man, a space wizard or a chosen one, but a groundswell of crooks with hearts of gold.

The battle lines of the rebellion are everywhere, and every act of insurrection pushes our lines forward.
