A GUIDE TO PLANNING AN OUTDOOR WEDDING IN HAMPSHIRE
The allure of outdoor weddings is undeniable. From the gentle rustle of leaves in a garden to the soothing sounds of waves on a beach, nature’s charm effortlessly elevates the romance of your big day. Hampshire, with its picturesque landscapes and serene settings, provides the perfect canvas for an enchanting outdoor wedding. In this guide, we’ll walk you through the essentials of planning a memorable outdoor wedding in Hampshire, offering tips, ideas, and top-notch suppliers to ensure your day is nothing short of magical.
PLANNING AND TIPS FOR YOUR OUTDOOR WEDDING
Catering and Cuisine Under the Open Sky
One of the highlights of an outdoor wedding is the opportunity to savor delectable dishes amidst nature’s beauty. When planning the catering, opt for foods that complement the outdoor setting – think refreshing salads, grilled delights, and vibrant fruit displays. Collaborate with your caterer to devise a seamless plan for food preparation and service, ensuring that both taste and presentation align with the open-air ambiance.
Nature-Inspired Decor
Embrace the natural surroundings as you design your decor. Incorporate elements like rustic wooden accents, whimsical wildflowers, and earthy tones to harmonize with the outdoor environment. Hanging fairy lights, lanterns, and draped fabrics can add an ethereal touch to your chosen location. Let the beauty of Hampshire’s landscapes shine through, enhancing the romantic atmosphere.
Weather Contingency Plan
While outdoor weddings offer a unique charm, they’re also subject to the whims of Mother Nature. Always have a contingency plan in place, such as a tent or an indoor backup venue, to ensure that your celebration can continue seamlessly even if the weather doesn’t cooperate. Clear communication with your vendors and guests about the backup plan will put everyone at ease.
Guest Preparedness
Advise your guests about the outdoor setting in advance so they can dress comfortably and appropriately. Consider providing amenities like sunscreen, bug spray, and fans to keep everyone comfortable during the event. Setting up a designated area with umbrellas or parasols can offer respite from the sun, ensuring your guests are well taken care of.
FLORAL WEDDING THEME IDEAS
Nature’s Beauty as Your Backdrop
Floral themes resonate effortlessly with outdoor weddings in Hampshire. Imagine lush blooms complementing the verdant backdrop of the New Forest or the delicate petals mirroring the hues of a sunset over the coastline. Whether you opt for vibrant summer florals or the warm tones of autumn leaves, the natural surroundings will only enhance the beauty of your chosen theme.
Capturing Moments Amidst Blooms
The floral setting provides a perfect backdrop for photography. Whether your style is romantic, whimsical, or classic, the blooms can be seamlessly integrated into your shots, adding depth and character to your wedding album. The interplay of light and colours against the floral backdrop creates enchanting visual stories, capturing the essence of your special day.

Little-Known Tips and Tricks to Make Your Garden More Eco-Friendly
Tumblr media
Creating an eco-friendly garden not only benefits the environment but also adds a touch of natural beauty to your outdoor space. By implementing sustainable practices and making conscious choices, you can transform your garden into a haven for biodiversity while reducing your carbon footprint. In this article, we will explore some little-known tips and tricks that can help you make your garden more eco-friendly. If you're looking for expert assistance, landscape gardeners in Farnham can provide valuable guidance tailored to your garden's specific needs.
1. Choose Native Plants:
Choose native species that are appropriate to the soil and temperature of your area when choosing plants for your garden. Since native plants have evolved to survive in their particular settings, they need less water, fertiliser, and pesticides. In addition, they offer local animal shelters and food supplies, promoting biodiversity in your garden.
2. Practice Water Conservation:
Water conservation is essential for an eco-friendly garden, especially in regions at risk of drought or with scarce water supplies. To collect rainwater from rooftops for use in watering plants, install a rainwater harvesting system. To reduce water waste, think about switching from sprinklers to drip irrigation or soaker hoses. Apply an organic mulch layer around your plants as well to help them retain moisture and require less regular watering.
3. Implement Composting:
Composting is a great technique to save waste and produce soil that is rich in nutrients for your plants. Fill a compost container with kitchen scraps, leaves, lawn clippings, and other organic waste. These items will eventually decay and turn into compost that is nutrient-rich and can be used to naturally fertilise your plants. Composting helps remove trash from landfills and lessens the demand for artificial fertilisers.
4. Embrace Natural Pest Control:
To preserve a healthy garden ecology, look into natural pest control techniques rather than depending on chemical pesticides. Encourage beneficial insects that eat garden pests like aphids, such ladybirds and lacewings. The natural repellent qualities of companion plants like marigolds and garlic may fend against pests. A healthy environment can also be kept without harming helpful insects by personally eliminating pests or by using organic insecticidal soaps.
5. Create Wildlife-friendly Spaces:
Enhancing biodiversity and supporting wildlife in your garden may help create a healthy environment. To draw different bird species, provide bird feeders, birdhouses, and birdbaths. Make sheltering spots where tiny animals and insects can hide, such log and rock piles. Include plants that yield nectar, berries, or seeds to give animals food options. You may experience nature's splendour up close by letting these critters live in your yard.
6. Opt for Sustainable Materials and Practices:
Think about utilising sustainable materials and techniques while building or remodelling your garden. To cut down on transportation emissions and help the local economy, choose locally sourced products. Use recycled or reused materials for garden paths and buildings. Use environmentally responsible techniques, such as permaculture, which focuses on creating ecosystems that can support themselves. These eco-friendly decisions help your garden be more environmentally friendly overall.
Conclusion:
By implementing these little-known tips and tricks, you can transform your garden into an eco-friendly oasis that supports biodiversity and conserves resources. Remember to choose native plants, practise water conservation, embrace composting, implement natural pest control, create wildlife-friendly spaces, and opt for sustainable materials and practices. With the guidance of landscape gardeners in Farnham, you can receive personalised advice and expert assistance in creating a beautiful and environmentally conscious garden. Start making these changes today and contribute to a greener and more sustainable future.

Marion Davies and Owen Moore in The Red Mill (Roscoe Arbuckle, 1927)
Cast: Marion Davies, Owen Moore, Louise Fazenda, George Siegmann, Karl Dane, Russ Powell, Snitz Edwards, William Orlamond, Ignatz. Screenplay: Frances Marion, titles by Joseph Farnham, based on a musical by Victor Herbert and Henry Martyn Blossom. Cinematography: Hendrik Sartov. Art direction: Cedric Gibbons, Merrill Pye. Film editing: Daniel J. Gray. Music: Michael Picton.
The Red Mill was directed by Roscoe ("Fatty") Arbuckle under the pseudonym “William Goodrich” that he adopted after being blacklisted in the "wild party” scandal over the death of Virginia Rappe, even though he was acquitted. It's a fairly forgettable romantic farce, about Tina (Marion Davies), a Dutch scullery maid, who falls in love with Dennis (Owen Moore), an Irishman visiting Holland, and gets involved with a plot to save Gretchen (Louise Fazenda) from having to marry someone other than her boyfriend Jacop (Karl Dane). Very loosely based on a creaky old Victor Herbert operetta, it's a surprisingly well-preserved silent film, with crisp images -- the cinematography is by Hendrik Sartov, a Danish director of photography who also shot the Lillian Gish films La Bohème (King Vidor, 1926) and The Scarlet Letter (Victor Sjöstrom, 1926). Given that it's a fitfully amusing comedy, whose chief virtue is that is shows off the great comic gifts of Davies, it might be surprising to find it in such pristine condition when so many other (and better) silent films are available only in patched-together restorations or have been lost altogether. The reason is probably that it was produced by William Randolph Hearst's company, Cosmopolitan Productions, which existed largely to showcase Davies, Hearst's mistress. So MGM, which released the film, took special care not to offend Hearst in its handling of The Red Mill. Davies is, as so frequently, a delight, playing physical comedy without sacrificing her beauty and femininity. She does a wonderful slapstick bit in which she tries to solve the problem of assembling a folding ironing board -- a twist on the familiar struggles of comedians with folding beach chairs. But Arbuckle, who directed dozens of short films, doesn't give this movie the pace needed to sustain itself at feature length. Joseph Farnham is responsible for the cornball captions -- sample: "A summer on Holland's canals leaves an impression, but a fall on its ice leaves a scar."

For the second half of February I had a lovely, 14-day-long trip planned with my mom. We were going to • drive to Amsterdam in the Netherlands and spend two days there, • then drive to Brussels in Belgium, sleep there for one night, • take the train to London and explore it for 3 days, • take the train to Farnham to go to the Unravel Festival this weekend • spend one more day in London before going back to Brussels and • finally spend another day in Münster, Germany, before going back home. As you can see above we made it to Amsterdam which was absolutely beautiful. We had two wonderful days. 🌞 But then I got sick and we had to cancel everything else. 😭 The past few days I spent in bed instead. No Unravel Festival for us. On the bright side: We went to every yarn shop in Amsterdam we could find and I found some beautiful yarn for a sweater. 🙌 I did my best to take some footage for a vlog in Amsterdam, but I did not have a look at it yet. As soon as I am back to normal, I will see if I can make a little video for you. 🤗 I hope you are well and healthy and having a wonderful weekend whereever you are! Glam tv stand

Glam tv stand movie#
Glam tv stand driver#
Glam tv stand series#
What's it like working with Carsyn and the other kids on the show? Her sketches come to life, animated in her imagination. I write Amber as an artist, a bit of a loner, escaping through her art.
Glam tv stand series#
What did you bring to the series that isn't in the books? Even when it's painful, we can find some levity in it. Over the years, I always talked to my mom about being a storyteller, and she said, "Be mindful of the energy you're putting into the world - it has a ripple effect." I want this to be smart, touching and of course, funny. I'm just trying to put some kindness out there. Some of the stories are drawn from my childhood, like Amber volunteering at a nursing home. I went to my young self - how I felt at that time and what I worried about. Was it different writing for a protagonist who is twelve? "We decided to bring the two worlds together," explains Hunt, who spoke recently with emmy's Amy Amatangelo. Hunt was, in fact, writing a show about an eccentric aunt when she met an executive from Boat Rocker Media, which had bought the rights to Amber Brown. "I cherish being the aunt that they can come to at times and confide in. "Mom thought it would be a good connection for me because I have so many nieces and nephews," Hunt says. Based on a series of novels of the same name by the late Paula Danziger, the show follows the twelve-year-old title character (played by Carsyn Rose) as she navigates her parents' divorce and all sorts of adolescent angst with honesty and humor.Īmber Brown marks the first time Hunt has written directly for the tween audience, and she did so at the encouragement of her mother. Now Hunt is the writer, director and showrunner of Amber Brown, streaming on Apple TV+. "I've been so fortunate," says the Chicago native. She's starred in movies as varied as Jerry Maguire, The Green Mile and Cheaper by the Dozen. Hunt's prolific television work includes producing and hosting her own talk show as well as creating, writing and headlining three sitcoms - ABC's Life with Bonnie (2002–04), CBS's Bonnie (1995– 96) and CBS's The Building (1993).
Glam tv stand movie#
Sometimes they quote her iconic improvised line - "We're walking, we're walking" - from the movie Dave, in which she played a White House tour guide.
Glam tv stand driver#
Often, they mention Return to Me, the MGM film starring Minnie Driver and David Duchovny, which she directed and cowrote. “I try to invoke that same feeling of ultra-luxury into all the glam rooms I design.Bonnie Hunt enjoys hearing from people who relate to her work, be it her acting, writing or directing. It was all about drama, with fierce leading ladies oozing sex appeal,” he says. “I adore the glitz and glam of Old Hollywood. This powerful mystique resonates for Bullard as well. “The feeling I like glam rooms to evoke is a nod to the golden era of Hollywood,” Arnold adds. Connecting a glam room to the primary suite and pulling components from an adjacent bathroom, such as the honed rose onyx he used in a project, for instance, “is a great way for the space to feel refined, more feminine-while being elevated and not thematic.”īut sometimes it makes perfect sense to go big in these intimate quarters that often precede very public moments. “It is important for there to be a mix of styles, and typically that is directed by the past, while contrasting with something new and contemporary,” Arnold states. “I think introducing a comfy space to gather helps to move this particular glam room away from parody,” Farnham says. Given the decadent vibe of these spaces, designers would be wise to avoid distracting cliché and ephemeral-feeling set decorating. “It’s more common in image-conscious markets, where a lot of people might be in entertainment or related industries, or in the world of beauty,” she says.īuy now for unlimited access and all of the benefits that only members get to experience. real estate agent Daria Greenbaum reports that glam rooms are often seen in eight-figure price homes and increasingly at relatively lower price points. (For many-those YouTubers, for instance-a get-ready area is arguably an extension of the office.) L.A. Spaces like walk-in closets, offices, and bathrooms can be adapted to house glam roomettes or at least a tricked out vanity. The pandemic-born reality of residences supporting more functions than ever before means a glam room isn’t only for red carpet regulars. Farnham’s project, for instance, includes Calacatta Viola marble, velvet, bouclé, and brass fixtures juxtaposed with dark stained wood features, walnut mirrors, and a custom walnut tailor stand for a more unisex vibe. As for materials and color palettes, a glam room need not exclusively be awash in Barbiecore and other overtly feminine-coded elements (although some cheeky irony can be fun).

Vase
Tiffany & Co.
1900
Inspired by the distinctive beauty of Native American art, Tiffany & Co.’s gifted designer G. Paulding Farnham created three highly unusual silver vessels for the firm’s grand prize-winning display at the 1900 Paris Exposition Universelle. The present vase is based on the design of Navajo pottery, its hand-raised silver body ornamented with semi-precious stones sourced in America: turquoise-colored amazonite and bluish opals, as well as hundreds of freshwater pearls embedded in the "corn-cob" handles. The vase was also exhibited the following year at the Buffalo Pan-American Exposition. Paulding Farnham was one of Tiffany & Co.’s most talented designers of both jewelry and silver. Having been apprenticed to Tiffany’s artistic director Edward C. Moore around 1878, Farnham became the firm’s head jewelry designer in 1891 and continued to win gold medals at international fairs until departing the firm in 1904.

Arcade Fire's WE was born in 'a very uncertain but beautiful time,' says Win Butler
Win Butler was behind the wheel of a rental vehicle Wednesday afternoon. His wife and bandmate Régine Chassagne was riding shotgun and their day-shy-of-nine-year-old son Edwin Farnham Butler IV was in the back, eating, as they rolled out of Palm Springs.
Butler was still buzzing about Arcade Fire’s surprise set last weekend at Coachella. Not on a main stage, where the Montreal band could well have been headlining, but in a tent jammed with 10,000 fans, and throngs more spilling outside.
“It was really cool,” he said. “It was really meaningful. The first time we played Coachella was in 2005. We didn’t have any road crew. We were basically a punk band, driving our own van and didn’t have road cases for our keyboards; they were just in the boxes we bought them in. That was our first time playing for a big audience. … So we were sort of in a reflective mood (being back there).”
There’s much to reflect on as the enduring Canadian indie-rock heroes prepare to release their sixth studio album, WE, on May 6. It’s been 18 years since the group shot to world fame with its debut album, Funeral. The new record finds Arcade Fire playing with a pared-down mix of urgency, intimacy and abandon that hearkens back to its early days while breaking new creative ground.
It all started when everything stopped. Butler and Chassagne were in a recording studio in New Orleans, where they now live for much of the year (though they still have a place in Montreal), when the COVID-19 pandemic began.
“They were closing the borders to Canada,” Butler recalled. “We had written Age of Anxiety, End of the Empire and a bunch of songs. … Régine and I were working every day in the studio. We didn’t know when or if it would be possible to get the band together. We were very inspired and very plugged in, but the world we were making the record for was changing so much.”
Butler had his grandfather Alvino Rey’s guitar, “a 1930s Gibson he got in New York City from (jazz guitar pioneer) Eddie Lang,” as well as his dad’s old Martin acoustic and his son’s electric.
“I had these three guitars I felt drawn to play, and we have this lovely old Steinway in our living room,” he said. “The goal was to write — independent of genre — songs we could play around the piano with guitar, and to just work on structure, melody and the bones of songs as much as we could, because we had time.”
When they reunited with the rest of the band six months later in El Paso, Texas, the pandemic was in full swing, and the U.S. election was very much up in the air. Despite the upheaval all around them, something clicked.
“Every night, I would grill food and we would sit around the fire and play songs,” Butler recalled. “It was a very uncertain but beautiful time.”
Arcade Fire has always hovered between extremes. Funeral was an album about death, marked by unifying anthems teeming with life. The new album is divided into two parts. The first, “I,” involves themes of angst and alienation, while the “WE” side is about coming together and finding hope. For Butler, they are flip sides of a coin.
“The ship is moving fast,” he said. “We’re in a challenging time and the world is changing at such a rapid rate. How do we face that change without being defeated by it? There are these two poles: the realities of the world, which at times can be really dark and heavy, which we all want to escape; and this deep, unconditional love, which transcends time and whatever generation or family we’re born into, and is deeper and more universal.”
WE was co-produced by Butler, Chassagne and Nigel Godrich, known for his career-spanning work with Radiohead. But OK Computer redux this is not. Godrich adapts to meet the pair on their own terms, elevating the band to a distilled version of what it does best.
“I bought (Radiohead’s 1995 album) The Bends the day it came out,” Butler said. “Nigel is such an amazing engineer, trained in this British system that goes back to the Beatles. He just has this depth of knowledge about recording that’s really inspiring.
“I think because of the way we wrote the record to work on piano and guitar, we really wanted the music to have space. If things sound good, you don’t want to add as much. There are a lot of songs that are the most spacious and empty-sounding things we’ve done.”
An appearance by Peter Gabriel, on the Chassagne-led dance track Unconditional II (Race and Religion), is but the latest alignment of the stars for a band that has found collaborative kinship with rock deities including David Bowie, Bruce Springsteen and David Byrne.
“(Gabriel) came to the studio and we had a day to work on it,” Butler said. “He does this thing where he double-tracks his voice, high and low. As soon as he put the high vocal down, I was like, ‘Oh s—, that’s Peter Gabriel.’ ”
Days after the new album was announced, Win’s brother Will Butler revealed he was leaving Arcade Fire. Meanwhile, an old friend became a new bandmate: Dan Boeckner of Montreal indie-rock act Wolf Parade joined as a touring vocalist and multi-instrumentalist.
“It’s sad, but also exciting,” Butler said of the shakeup. “We had an amazing run with Will, and we’re extremely excited about the vibe in the band (now).
“With our son as well, we’ve just got to prepare for change and root our life in love and connection. My goal was always bigger than just having a band. It was more about friendship and a sense of community, and people whose hearts are in the right place and really give a s—.
“I’m really proud we’re still doing it, and still working. I’m massively proud of the new record. I think it’s one of the best things we’ve ever done. And I’m really excited for the future.”

~~~
After the third day of Annabeth holing herself up in her room, lights off, blankets piled around her, and after the seemingly billionth Athena kid to tell Percy to give her space, he decides enough is enough. As he stands in front of the shut door staring back at him, he almost leaves, uncertain if just being her boyfriend for all of four days is enough.
Screw it. He’s been her friend for several years now— he knows Annabeth. More importantly, he cares for her. A scary amount if he lets himself admit it. And it’s that thought that gives him the final push to raise his fist and rap sharply across the wood.
The girl that reveals herself at the doorway shortly after is a wreck, hair a mess piled on top of her head, huge bags under red eyes, and dirty sweatpants paired with a ratty tank top. She looks so human, and Percy aches. She looks beautiful, too, and Percy aches more.
“Hey.” He says softly. Carefully.
“I don’t really want to see anyone right now, Percy.” And the door goes swinging shut. His foot moves of it’s own accord just before she can get it in place.
“I don’t care.” This time he is firmer, and he follows her inside the dim room, ignoring her tense shoulders and crossed arms. “Look.” Percy forces himself to swallow down the endearment pushing at the roof of his mouth. “You can’t just lock yourself up in here, alone and hurting, and call that healing.”
Annabeth throws him a sharp look, but he’s more confident now, remembering all the times her edges would come out and he’d back down and they’d be worse for wear because of it. “You don’t know what I’m going through. Luke is-” She chokes a little on it. “Luke was like an older brother to me. I’m just trying to process everything, figure out how I feel, where to put the memories of him. You can’t help me with that.”
He sits on her bed, leaving a couple of inches between them, and feeling every single one of them as keenly as he felt the fire of the Styx, maybe more so because at least then she was taking his hand in hers. It’s times like these that Percy wishes he had his mother’s talent for knowing exactly what to say.
“Maybe not, but you don’t need to be alone to do that. Stop punishing yourself for his choices, especially not his final one. You didn’t kill him— Kronos did. Just... talk to me. I miss you, Annabeth.” He reaches for her hand and feels something small in the pit of his stomach grow when she lets him. “I’m not going to leave you, I promise. Just stop trying to shut me out, I’m begging you. Please.”
“Okay.” It’s soft, barely a whisper, but Annabeth’s eyes meet his, and there are no more edges. The pain that replaced it is almost harder to look at, but he figures he’d stare straight at the sun until he went blind if it suddenly took up the colour of her eyes. When she interlaces their fingers together, Percy knows they’ll be all right. He’ll make sure of it.
The Magic Weekend
Okay, I promised you all this post and here it is!
So I had bought my ticket to Queen and Adam Lambert’s Sydney show all the way back in April 2019, when they first went on sale. I looked forward to it for months. During my down periods it kept me going - that I was going to see them live.
And then summer happened.
I’m sure all of you are aware of how bad this Australian summer was. I could write paragraphs and paragraphs about our summer of stress, and sorrow; the thick choking smoke that blanketed my city; staring at fire maps every single day and watching the lines creep ever closer. I was lucky; aside from the smoke, my city did not burn. (Only just.) My brother, a fire fighter, returned exhausted but safe after spending 54 days on various fire fronts.
Instead, I’ll tell you about Fire Fight.
From the instant it was announced I knew Queen would be there. It was the very day after their Sydney concert, at the very same stadium, heck, even using their stage! They had to be there. So, with my New Year’s resolution to be as happy as possible, I bit the bullet and bought a front standing section ticket.
And oh, was I ever rewarded.
But first: their Sydney show. Would you believe it, after the summer we had, my main concern was that we might get flooded out! It is truly all or nothing, here, sometimes. Even as we arrived at Sydney Olympic Park a thunderstorm opened over us; they had to stop people going to their seats because of lightning. We started an hour late but it was so worth it.
You guys, Adam Lambert is literally a genius. If he was a bit younger I might have even suggested that he’d been touched by Freddie’s talent from beyond the grave. He does things with his voice I couldn’t dream was possible. God, Freddie would have loved him. Absolutely adored him. God, Freddie probably would have adopted him!
It didn’t rain a single drop during Queen’s two and a half hour show. Adam asked us to sing along and I did. A week and a half later my voice is still strained. It was so incredible. The use of the video screen was superb, too. At one stage during In The Lap of the Gods...Revisited, the “columns” and buildings on the screens behind them crumbled and broke and fell apart. And then later, during The Show Must Go On, they reassembled. Reminding us, very literally, that the show must go on, even without Freddie and John.
I stumbled back into my hotel room at 1am, slept until 9am, went down to breakfast, and then got ready for Fire Fight.
Fire Fight was literally hours. It started at 1pm local time and finished just before 11pm. It was a long, long, long day. (Somehow I didn’t get sunburnt too badly, either!) I didn’t know a good half the acts but I went to have a good time anyway and ended up enjoying most of them (and might have had a teenage crush on Ronan Keating reawakened).
Queen and Adam Lambert came on at around 8:15pm. The crowd was absolutely buzzing, you guys. This was the star attraction. 5 Seconds of Summer had just whipped us up into a frenzy with how good they were, and now we were waiting for Queen. Spontaneously in different parts of the stadium people would start the stomp-stomp-clap (they kept speeding up). When they ran out on stage, the roar shook the heavens. When they did Bohemian Rhapsody, the crowd sang along. And then Brian hit that transition into Radio Gaga...
...and 77000 people LOST. THEIR. SHIT.
As soon as he did it I knew they were doing Live Aid. The crowd absolutely freaked out. And Adam was spectacular. He kept getting this grin like he could not believe what he was doing and it was so great. In the standing sections, people would sit on the plastic floor whenever it was an act they weren’t as big fans of, or if they just wanted rest. Not for QAL. Not a single person was sitting down for Queen. They walked on, stole that show, and walked off again to chants of “one more song! one more song!”
(And then they did a live cross to Michael Buble, which...I mean he sang well, but how to destroy the energy in a stadium 101, basically.)
A few people left after Queen but I wasn’t going anywhere, because the last act of the night was to be John Farnham. For those who don’t know, he is the greatest Australian singer of all time who came up with one of the greatest songs of all time: the inimitable You’re the Voice. I’d never seen him live, since he “retired” when I was still a teenager and I’d been too broke to see him at various stints since. I’d always wanted to, and now was my chance.
Of course, like everyone else there, I also knew that You’re the Voice would be the last song. Had to be the last song. There were no other choices (since we’d already sung I am Australian earlier in the day). So when he reached near the end of his (incredible) set, with one last song still to do, we knew what it was.
Then he told us he had a treat for us. He introduced us to Mitch Tambo. And then the director picked the wrong camera shot and suddenly Brian May was on the big screen as he walked on stage.
I wish I could describe just what the reaction was. The way the entire stadium just about rose off the ground from the screaming and the cheering. The guys near me who were in total meltdown screaming OH MY GOD, OH MY GOD over and over.
John Farnham and Brian May, two greats, hugging on stage, about to perform one of the all-time great songs.
We screamed the lyrics. We had a beautiful moment where Mitch Tambo sang the second verse in the language of the Gamilaraay people, and we sang back at him in English. United. As one. It was possibly the greatest rendition of this song of all time. Perfect.
And then the fire fighters came out on stage. I’m pretty sure half the stadium cried.
Queen and Adam Lambert might have stolen the show overall, but that song was the next biggest moment of the night.
You guys. It was perfect. I can’t imagine it being any better than that.
The SFWA Grand Masters,Vol. 1
Edited by Frederik Pohl
Tumblr media
Pohl has selected eighteen short stories and novellas written by the first five Grand Masters ever selected by the Science Fiction Writers of America:  Robert A. Heinlein, Jack Williamson, Clifford D. Simak, L. Sprague de Camp, and Fritz Leiber. A great debt is owed to Jerry Pournelle for this recognition of the best of the best and to Frederik Pohl for both introducing and reintroducing me to these authors in one handy volume.  Actually, in three volumes as I know there is one more to be searched out in the interlibrary world.
 Thanks to my library’s willingness to go out of state, I can read the first volume in this series, having started off 2020 with Volume Two.  Thank you also to the Woodridge Public Library in Woodridge, Illinois.  Now I need to find the third volume.  4 out of 5
Tumblr media
We start out with Robert A. Heinlein.  I can still remember the first Heinlein that I read, The Moon is a Harsh Mistress.  My memory is so clear that I can recall to this day seeing it on the library shelf when I was working through a list of Golden Age writers that my father thought I should check out.  I understand how controversial he is to many readers, but I always found that his stories were worth reading, even when some of the plotlines were uncomfortable (I’m thinking primarily of Farnham’s Freehold).  Even if I didn’t agree with his ideas explored in his books and short stories, they made me think.
 “The Roads Must Roll” by Robert A. Heinlein
 (Future History 3) The United States had moved from automobiles to solar-powered people movers beginning when oil and gasoline were rationed during World War II.  It led to less pollution, a spreading out of the population from the congestion of the cities, and a working class who were ripe for agitation by self-serving megalomaniacs with self-worth issues like Shorty Van Kleeck.  It is up to Larry Gaines, the Chief Engineer, to stop the destruction and disruption of the roads.  Heinlein is remarkably prescient in this 1940 tale, predicting the congestion of the automobiles and their increasing dangers as well as the importance of solar energy.  It’s a shame such people movers, whether this style or high-speed trains are kept from actually being implemented.  It is also true that the disenfranchised can be easily manipulated.  Just look at our current political environment, not just in the United States and Great Britain.  A brilliant tale.  I can see the workers being militarized considering how a minor disruption, much less a major one, could not only bring the nation to a halt, it could have serious and deadly ramifications.  4.5 out of 5.
 “The Year of the Jackpot” by Robert A. Heinlein
 Statistician Potiphar Breen has been taking note of strange and unusual events, including a large number of women taking their clothing off in public.  Meade Barstow, the latest befuddled stripper, is seen by Pot.  Pot intervenes when the police arrive, offering to take care of her and see her safely home.  Instead, when she is worried about what her landlady will say, he brings her to his home so that she can put herself back together.  Meade agrees to answer his questions for his kindness.  Pot reveals what he believes the numbers are telling him, that the planet is facing something that scares him.  Intense, sad, and entirely too realistic.  The idea of cycles with world events both good and bad is all too true.  The gentle romance between Meade and Pot was a lovely addition.  Side note:  I was surprised to see the inclusion of transvestites in this story published in 1951. Heinlein treated the couple and the subject in a much nicer manner than I might have expected.  I wonder why they were included as they weren't truly needed, nor was the subject of needed for his argument.  Others could've sufficed.  This was a first time read for me, as is the next story.  4 out of 5.
 “Jerry Was a Man” by Robert A. Heinlein
 When Martha van Vogel accompanied her husband to a genetics lab that alters DNA to make workers out of apes and vanity pets, she was unaware of how the mutated ape workers were treated once they were no longer useful, that they were euthanized.  After raising hell, Martha is allowed to take one of the younger workers, whose eyesight had him put in the death pen, home with her against her husband’s wishes.  Refusing to look the other way, Martha fights all the way to court to not only get Jerry free of the lab, but to help keep all the others alive, leading to a precedent making court case.  This is an incredibly uncomfortable story on so many fronts.  I found it most disturbing that Jerry’s speech pattern is a caricature of poor uneducated blacks.  I understand that this was intentional on the part of Heinlein.  I’m hoping that it was to give his readers a unique viewpoint into their prejudices, especially considering that the story was copyrighted in 1947.  Especially with the return of black American soldiers from World War II to a country that still considered them as less than human.  3.5 out of 5.
  “The Farthest Place” by Robert A. Heinlein
 (Extract from Tramp Royale) This is non-fiction, an account of the Heinleins and their visit to Tristan da Cunha when the tramp steamer they are on makes a call there.  The island is in the South Atlantic, over 1500 miles from the nearest other community.  I may have enjoyed this excerpt, but in another context.  However, this is a collection of science fiction and fantasy. This particular piece really had no reason to be included.  I decline to rate it.
  “The Long Watch” by Robert A. Heinlein
 Lieutenant Johnny Dahlquist was approached by Colonel Towers regarding the danger of having politicians in control back on Earth, that the Guard should oversee keeping the planet safe.  Towers wants Johnny’s expertise as junior bomb officer in his rebellious group.  While Johnny saw his point about the instability of politicians in general, he couldn’t agree to use his bombs to make a point, a point that would lead to the deaths of innocent people.  He had to make the bombs unusable, then hold watch until a ship from Earth will arrive in approximately four days.   This story … Heinlein literally reached into my chest and ripped my heart out.  My notebook still shows the faint marks of tears. There are many types of heroism. John Ezra Dahlquist is a fine example of doing what is right even when others try to dissuade you.  (You should also look up Rodger Young on Google.  I was unaware of this Medal of Honor recipient until this story.)  5 out of 5.
  Next is Jack Williamson, another writer from the Golden Age of Science Fiction.  And yet, somehow, I never have read any of Jack’s works.  Based on these stories, that was a great crime.
  “With Folded Hands” by Jack Williamson
 (Humanoids .5) Poor Underhill is already struggling to keep his android business afloat.  Now a new company has suddenly appeared, providing slick new humanoids that are taking over the town of Two Rivers.  His new boarder, Mr. Sledge, claims to be an inventor.  The new humanoids are known by him and he appears to be frightened of them.  Williamson explores how actions, discoveries, and inventions meant to make man’s life better can sometimes serve to harm him.  The story, published in 1947, is even more relevant today considering the growth of A.I.s and robots.  This really is as much horror as it is science fiction, terrifying on a deep level for those aware how close we are to this possible future.  3.5 out of 5.
  “Jamboree” by Jack Williamson
 A robot self-called Pops is Scout Master of boys from birth to the age of 12.  Periodically it takes the boys to a Jamboree to meet Mother.  Younger boys can indulge in pink ice cream and gold stars plastered on their faces.  For the oldest boys, it will be their last Jamboree.  But one boy thinks there is a way to stop the cycle.  Another tale of robots making decisions for the good of mankind.  A very different take.  3.5 out of 5.
  “The Manana Literary Society” by Jack Williamson
 (Excerpt from Wonder’s Child:  My Life in Science Fiction) Another piece of non-fiction, but at least it is about science fiction.  Once again, I find it out of place and will not rate it.  The selection is, however, a good look at the Los Angeles science fiction scene.
  “The Firefly Tree” by Jack Williamson
 Forced to move with his family to his grandfather’s farm, the unnamed protagonist is without friends, home-schooled, and lonely. Then he finds an interesting plant that his father calls a weed.  He is moved to save the plant from destruction and nurtures it until it grows into a tree. One night he goes out to find the tree covered with fireflies.  He begins to dream of them, hearing who they are and what they are there ready to do. Doesn’t Jack ever write happy endings? Any at all?  As a child who was a loner and lived in a neighborhood with no children near my age, I could relate to this young boy.  Truly engrossing.  3.5 out of 5.
  Now on to Clifford D. Simak.  I’ve read some of his short stories, but it was a long time ago. I don’t remember much of his style or even whether I liked his works or not.
  “Desertion” by Clifford D. Simak
 To explore the planet of Jupiter, men are physically converted into one of the more intelligent native species, the Lopers. The last five men sent out by Kent Fowler, the head of the survey project, haven't returned.  The exploration must continue, but Fowler can't face sending another man out to what appears to be certain death, so he decides to go in their place, accompanied by his elderly dog.  This was a beautiful story.  I wish it had been longer.  4 out of 5.
  “Founding Father” by Clifford D. Simak
 Mankind wants to spread out among the stars, to colonize other planets, but the amount of time that would need to be spent on a spaceship would be an issue.  Immortals have no problems with time per se, but the loneliness is another matter.  A solution was found, a solution meant to be a temporary fix.  But what happens with temporary when that is over one hundred years?  Whoa, this might’ve been short, but it was so intense, thought-provoking, and a bit sad.  Winston-Kirby will have some decisions to make regarding comfort or duty. 4 out of 5.
  “Grotto of the Dancing Deer” by Clifford D. Simak
 Archaeologist Boyd discovers a hidden fissure at his latest sight, one filled with fantastical and irreverent art.  He also finds something else, something impossible. And yet.  Another fascinating story with a deep well of sadness and depressing loneliness in a different way than the previous story.  4 out of 5.
  L. Sprague de Camp is a writer that I used to read quite a bit of, mostly his earlier works in short story collections.  And the Conan books he finished from Robert Howard’s notes and uncompleted manuscripts.  Frankly, I found de Camp’s renditions to be better written, although I know that is heresy for some.
  “A Gun for Dinosaur” by L. Sprague de Camp
 When a time machine is invented, one that can’t go back to a time more recent than 100,000 years ago, a big part of its users are big game hunters taking clients back to kill a dinosaur for trophy.  Rivers, of Rivers and Aiyar, one of those hunters, explains to a potential client why he has strict rules about who he’ll take back to what periods based on size and ability to use a particular caliber weapon. All I can say is poor August, braver than he thought he was, and how Courtney deserved everything he got and more. Entitled asshole.  3.5 out of 5
  “Little Green Men from Afar” by L. Sprague de Camp
 A non-fiction look into the persistent myths, legends, and outright lies that still garner hopeful believers, from flying saucers to the Bermuda Triangle, Atlantis to cults.  I do like the five criteria given by Francis F. Broman regarding any and every story:  1) the report be firsthand; 2) the teller shows no obvious bias or prejudice; 3) that the reporter be a trained observer; 4) that the data be available for checking; and 5) that the teller be clearly identified.  I’ve enjoyed many a hour reading von Daniken and the various UFO books, but they have always clearly be put in the fantasy fiction category for me, fun if not taken seriously.  Again, no rating for a non-fiction piece in a fiction collection.  I’m particularly disappointed as de Camp is left with just two fiction pieces as an introduction to his works.
  “Living Fossil” by L. Sprague de Camp
 Nawputta, a zoologist, and Chujee, his guide, are searching the Alleghany Mountains for interesting specimans and signs of the cities of Man, long extinct, when they meet a suspicious explorer.  They also stumble across something they didn’t expect. Cute.  Obvious, but still very fun to read.  3.5 out of 5.
  Fritz Leiber is the author of a favorite series from my early 20s.  While my father was devouring Conan the Barbarian, I was deep into Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser.  Strangely enough, I don’t think I read anything else by Leiber in those days or later. So many books, so little time, so few selections at the libraries with whom I had memberships.
  “Sanity” by Fritz Leiber
 World Manager Carrsbury had researched and planned and schemed for ten years to understand insanity and to replace all the members of the World Management Service with his own people, all of whom had been trained under his exacting guidelines.  Just as he had directed the world’s citizens in what they could read, watch, drink, and do in their daily lives.  Or so he thought had been done.  Leiber’s look at sanity is fascinating and a bit disturbing.  Add a backdrop of world government and you have a thoughtful and frightening tale that resonates today.  4 out of 5.
  “The Mer She” by Fritz Leiber
 (Fafhrd & the Gray Mouser) The Gray Mouser was sailing home to Cif and Fafhrd, his holds filled with treasure and good as befits a successful merchant.  When he discovers a stowaway in a chest, he must fight his way through magic if he ever hopes to see his island home again.  It has been an extraordinarily long time since I’ve visited this series. The language is as flowery and somewhat archaic as ever, but I missed the boys working together.  It just doesn’t have the same punch without that.  3 out of 5.
 “A Bad Day for Sales” by Fritz Leiber
 Robie, the first sales robot, is on the street, but having a hard time making sales.  Then things get a lot worse.  Very short, very cute even with that "worse" part.  3.5 out of 5.
