Warrior Cat AU Design

I DM for a group of my friends a homebrew campaign heavily inspired by Zootopia & Beastars that has been lovingly nicknamed “Fantasy Zootopia” by my players. Recently, I’ve been on a kick designing their warrior cat alter egos, they’ve been a lot of fun!

This is Sharpwit {She/Her}, based on Marisol Sharpe, private eye monkey. Marisol is a brash and incredibly smart individual who’s an invaluable asset and worthy adversary. Sharpwit in turn is a loud and sarcastic warrior but one that is quick to solve nearly any problem in camp and crack any mystery that springs up in the forest. Mind you, she’ll make a friend out of Psychicbite in no time 😉

This is Psychicbite (ey,em,eirs), formerly known as Quieteye, based off of Sophro the Moray Eel. Ey have a gift(?) for psychic premonitions that often times lead to more issues than help..

Recently I’ve been on a kick coming up with concepts for what they would look like as a warrior cat. I love coming up with their names and details to draw back to the player character.

This is Petaldrop! (she/her) based on Petunia the lop-eared rabbit. She has, so many kiddos, and her dead spouse just hangs out rent free in camp with her because frankly - it’s boring in Starclan!

Just a small reminder from an Italian from Italy to anyone wishing to know more and take inspiration from my country. Do it! But, to have a less frustrating research and frustrate the local less:

"Italian" as an adjective cannot be use to describe anything before the 1861, but the geographical peninsula.

1861 marks the unification and the official birth of Italy as a state. Before, it was divided into many different states, each with a different foreign domination, each with different dialects and traditions. There is no Italy before 1861. No Italian fashion, no Italian cuisine, no Italian whatsoever.

One of the mottos of the unification was, after the country was united: "We made Italy, now we have to make Italians".

This to say: Italy is a variegated country still today, pizza isn't the national dish, isn't typical of the whole country. All the various areas sprung from different states that were occupied by different foreign powers, bringing divisions further.

If you want to research on Italy, particularly during history, the golden rule is "research regional". The more regional you go, the more accurate you will be... And the more easier your research will be (from experience).

Also: the accents are significant! "Papà" means "Dad" in Italian, but if you write it "Papa"... It's "Pope". Univocally.

And: please don't write mafia or any criminal organisation without specific research. If you don't know who Falcone and Borsellino are, stop and go back before starting your Mafia AU. Particularly if your goal is to show the criminal organisation as noble and honourable against a corrupted state... Our state is corrupted because its ties with mafia. Not the other way around. If you're looking for that kind of story, you're looking for Robin Hood, not Toto Riina.

A last thing for everyone who saw White Lotus: any hotel concierge telling a client that she looks like Peppa Pig in the face would be fired in five minutes. :)

Now applying to everything it applies to instead of just The Books of the Raksura or The Murderbot Diaries.

The most ~mainstream~ example is probably Zootopia. Or, more infamously, Bright.

Pro tip: Real oppressed people are not and have never been scary Evil monsters trying to end the world. Nor are oppressed people obligate carnivores that literally evolved to hunt and eat the people oppressing them.

Disney wants you to think that anyone who wants people to stop being oppressed is gonna turn around 2 seconds later and murder a baby. And so many fucking white authors (Including Martha Wells!) think that oppressed people are all super powered unstoppable killing machine apex predators who literally evolved to eat other people and you're being mean :( for being reasonably wary when you first meet them, because your cousin literally just got eaten alive by their cousin last week and you don't want to go the same way. This is what white people think bigotry is.

Worldbuilding and Pride

Something I've always thought of is, while it wouldn't make sense in a medieval fantasy setting, and it might not make sense in a sci-fi setting (as depending on the flavour of future presented, pride flags, or the concept of flags in general, may be a thing of the past) but all works of fiction set in what is ostensibly a verson of our modern world but with multiple sapient species whose existence is public knowledge (The MCU, the DC universe, any "aliens walk among us" setting, any urban fantasy where vampires and wwrewolves ect dont hide their existence, furry works set in a modern worlds such as Beastars and Zootopia) should have a proliferation of new pride flags for cross-speacies attraction, as well as in universe debate as to whether or not being attracted to a member of a different species is considered inherently queer or not, whether it counts as pansexual, or where there are better more specific labels that these people prefer.

Other than that one Alan Moore swamp thing comic I don't think I've ever seen it addressed.

"So what's going to happen to you?" Nick asked.

They were an hour onto the road to Morrigan's Ford - the proper road this time, now that there were no bandits running rampant through the countryside. Judy and the others were passing mammals going the other way, bound for the farms and fields outside Willow Vale, and the occasional Sentinel that gave them a vague nod of recognition.

None of them knew what Judy and her companions had done. Having done it herself, she knew that was probably for the best.

"Why?" Judy eyed Nick's faint smile. "Wondering where you'll be able to schedule your hustles?"

He grinned wider at the teasing. "It's mucking out the stalls, isn't it?"

"Probably." Judy sighed. "And scrubbing the Watchhouse corridors."

"Fitting, since that's where this all started." Nick considered. "That's what you get for blackmailing me."

She stepped wide and waited long enough for Sedgewick to draw between them. "He's never going to let that go."

So this took five years and change, end to end. And yes, I spent some time in there teaching myself to draw and there was a virus going around you might have heard about. But I'm really hoping I never stall out on a big story like this ever again.
