Alderic Beaufort had always been a quiet child. He was the type of baby that lured new parents into a sense of ease and security, that led them to believe that they could handle another child when in reality they were far from ready. Though his birth parents had been older - only a few years shy of forty at the time of his birth - this trap had already been in effect. Karine Beaufort had been three months pregnant when she and her husband were killed by Grindelwald’s Acolytes.

Rarely did Alderic cry, and at fifteen months, he did not understand the loss of his parents. All he knew was that the loving, familiar faces were replaced with sneering, calculative ones, and the warm, homey apartment with views of a bustling Paris street was replaced with a cold, dark room with a window that looked out on the desolate Austrian Alps. His light blue eyes were wide and searching - always. Searching for what, he did not know.

Though Alderic rarely saw what was outside the four stone walls that confined him, he knew that it was particularly quiet that day. Normally he could hear footsteps clicking against the marble surface, or voices echoing around the chamber, hardly any of which spoke the language he was beginning to pick up from his nearly forgotten parents. But today, it was silent. He was alone.

When day turned into night and the torches hung on the stone walls ignited themselves, a soft crack in the corner of the room reminded him that he was not alone. The first time Alderic had seen these strange, greyish creatures, the poor boy had been terrified, and had screamed until the man with soft brown eyes had taken him into his arms the way his father used to. He tried to order them away, but the man with two eyes of different colors refused. He took Alderic from the other man, and brought him closer to the strange creature, kicking and screaming - but, with a few uttered words and a twirl of his wand, a sense of calm overtook the child, and as the strange creature offered up a smile, Alderic grinned back.

“Master Grindelwald and his associates will be returning soon,” the creature spoke, but as it was in German, it was really only noise to Alderic. But nonetheless, the tone used was comforting, and seeing the creature approaching him with a small jar and a full spoon outstretched, Alderic gladly opened his mouth. He was always kept just short of starving, but this creature always came when it was getting close to unbearable. 

As the House Elf messily fed the ravished child, a sorrowful grimace overtook her wrinkled face. “Minka wishes she could feed the baby more often, but my master forbids it. Master Grindelwald says he is making the baby strong, but the baby is skinny and weak.” 

Minka was an elderly Elf now, a gift to Grindelwald from a faithful Pureblood family in Germany upon his return from imprisonment. She had raised upward of thirty children in her life thus far, five of her own and a seemingly never ending line of witches and wizards, but never had she had such strict instructions when it came to the care of a child. She was not to hold him, address him by his name, comfort him when he cried, nor feed him outside of a predetermined schedule. The whole thing made Minka extremely uneasy.

As she stared into the child’s glossy, heartbreaking blue eyes, she felt a weight in her chest that caused her shoulders to droop. “Minka must obey Master Grindelwald’s orders, but Minka is sorry.”

Alderic did little more than stare into the creature’s large, yellow-green eyes as he slurped the mushy food from the spoon in her clammy hand. Minka took it as a plea for help, or maybe the impressioned thanks of a desperate, starving child, but in reality, Alderic was focusing. He was studying her.

Minka dropped the spoon in absolute terror as the child’s eyes suddenly doubled in size and faded to a yellow-green - an eye color she had passed along to each of her children. The sound of the metal spoon against the stone floors shocked the child, and as he fell back into his crib and cried, his likeness returned to his own. 

The clattering of the spoon was quickly replaced with the sound of bounding footsteps, and with the sudden fear of punishment and the dulled sense of consequence from old age, Minka gasped and vanished from sight. This only made Alderic cry more, eyes fixed on the spot where she had been. These cries were more powerful, fueled not by shock, as they had been before, but by fear. With Minka, though she was strange and skittish, he at least knew he was safe. It could be anyone coming to the door.

But as the medieval wooden door was pushed open, a sense of recognition eased his fearful state and his screams faded to whimpers. Of all the new faces, that of the brown-eyed man gave him the strongest sense of trust. 

“Hey Aldy,” Ulric Abernathy cooed, his American accent contrasting greatly with Minka’s cadence. “There’s no need to cry, buddy.”

Alderic quieted down as Abernathy approached, his tear-filled eyes watching him dedicatedly. The child reached his tiny arms into the air, and Abernathy grinned automatically. With a gentle sigh, the wizard gave in, lifting the child into his arms. 

“A new world begins today, Aldy,” said Abernathy, bouncing Alderic on his hip and bringing him over to the window. The stars shone bright on them that night, and he didn’t want Alderic to miss a moment of it. “After today, the real change begins. Gridelwald’s vision is getting closer and closer to fruition, and you, my boy, will get to live in a world unlike any other - one where you won’t need to hide.”

The child babbled unintelligibly in response. English was the most difficult to understand, but between Ulric and the man with the mismatched eyes, it was the language he was exposed to the most here. Still, he struggled to form even the simplest words, least of all ‘hungry’. So, he leaned his head against the hopeful stargazer and began to whine.

Ulric hushed and bounced little Alderic, attempting to soothe him before his whimpers escalated. Thankfully, before it got to that point, the child was distracted by the sudden presence of a shimmering blue figure, floating in the night before them. There stood a large, majestic, skeletal horse-like creature that neither Alderic or Ulric had ever seen in the flesh, yet both of them knew what it represented. 

“Bring Alderic to my study,” came the distinct voice of Gellert Grindelwald. “It is time to begin his training.”

Okay so here's my actual thoughts about The Crimes of Grindelwald. That last bit was like me processing really quickly what I thought but this is a more...in-depth thing. Not promising a play by play analysis of the plot and everything but what I thought of the story in general and more specifically about the dynamics of Newt + Leta, Newt + Tina, and the Credence plotline.

Okay so last night, I finished Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, and I didn't think it was such a bad movie. Not the best, for sure, but I have seen worse. I was just struck by how much was going on. . .there was the overall Grindelwald's evil agenda and him being a creepy af villain. Kudos to Johnny Depp for pulling off the creepiness. And the costume designers/makeup people. All of that (his appearance, and the man's acting job) contributed to very much "This guy is Bad™ and he won't hesitate for a second to do what needs to be done". Though I am still wondering what the hell happened to his eye to make him look weird like that. Was he born that way? (I haven't read the books but I might one day.)

I liked the escape scene; the rain, and the Thestrals were pretty neat but I might have appreciated some explanation or reference (was it referred to in the previous movie, Abernathy's abilities?) Or was it Grindelwald making it possible to switch places with him in the coach? I mean cinematically, it was kind of neat, but I was really confused. Same with the part, later, when Abernathy shifted from looking like a woman to himself to get inside the Ministry. I'm just used to seeing wizards use wands, given that we see that in HP. Granted, okay, some of them just don't, like Graves/Grindelwald in the first movie when he just did with magic with a swish and flick of his hand...but still.

Then there was the whole bit about Dumbledore enlisting Newt's help to find Credence. Not gonna lie, though I liked Dumbledore a bit in the HP movies, I didn't like the idea that he was foisting off on Newt this job. Newt asks him at one point, "Why can't you do it?" and we later find that he can't fight Grindelwald because of a blood pact. Understandable, but Idk I just feel like Dumbledore just doesn't want to get involved. For whatever reasons that may be (perhaps I'll discover this in the third movie...) Which brings me to the point at the very end of the movie, when Newt brings him the phial containing their blood pact thing. When he asks Dumbledore if he'll destroy it or try to, the latter says, "Maybe, maybe" in a way that seemed very much to me like a "I'll tell you maybe but it's a Slytherin way of saying 'no'." I'm not trying to bash Dumbledore here, trust me, this is just what I think of him from these actions.

This little sideplot of Credence and Nagini...it didn't really grab me. Maybe he really is like this, but Credence just seems very mopy and I'm not sure how to put it....he doesn't really make me feel any particular way about him. Like it's different with Grindelwald and Newt.

Grindelwald:

Okay I see him, he looks like trouble,

Lie after lie spills off his tongue,

He's vicious and all of the above = he's bad and I don't like him.

Newt:

He's a little spacey but he knows what he has to do.

He says he doesn't want to take sides, but his heart is in the right place, and he will devote himself to the good.

He's quirky, he looks quirky and there's just this awkwardness about him that makes him endearing = you develop a soft spot for this guy.

But Credence? I pitied him in the first movie for how he suffered, but I just don't think I understood his character enough in this movie to feel anything more.

Okay, now about Leta and Theseus. I was downright confused about the relationship with Theseus and Newt tbh. In one moment he's hugging him and offering him assistance and then at the Ministry, he looks like he legit wants to kill Newt, and I think Newt even makes a remark about that. But then, at the very end, they hug because well, they've both lost Leta.

As for Leta....I wasn't sure what to think about her and Newt As I said before, there's that flashback to Hogwarts where we see her upset because of the other girls' bullying, and she runs off and finds Newt with a raven chick. Then Newt finds her and takes her to see a Bowtruckle (was that Pickett by the way, or just one of the Bowtruckles that he'd found in that tree there?), and it's sweet because we see just so how tender he is. And he's looking at her with a kind expression, but I didn't get the impression that either of them had anything romantic, really. I think I was just really confused.

The Newt and Tina part of all this....So personal note here--I sort of just initially started shipping them because they looked like they could be a thing. In the first movie, he was sort of just thrown into an adventure with her and they had to figure everything out. The last scene of FB had me thinking, will they, won't they? Then, in CoG, when Queenie tells Newt that Tina thought he was engaged to Leta and thus started dating Achilles, the camera goes to him and I saw him maybe a little devastated, disappointed, at the news. He pretty much visibly deflated, and then we see him looking for how to find her, to explain the truth. Why would he be so desperate to do that if he didn't actually care how she felt about that?

I also picked up on that part when they're in the safehouse, and they're taking care of Yusuf. Whenever Tina calls him 'Mr. Scamander', he just has this look on his face...like he feels the distance she's putting between them. Then there's also the scene in the French Ministry. Newt was basically scrambling to explain to her that it was a mistake, that in his words, he wasn't truly happy or engaged, despite what she thought. I felt like it was pointed, when he said that to her. She asks him "Are you here to win [Leta] back?" and he answers with "I'm here to--" to what? To win Tina back? Maybe.

Newt: Please don't be happy. No, I--sorry, I don't--obviously I want you to be, and I hear that you are now. Which is wonderful. What I'm trying to say is, I want you to be happy, but I don't want you to be happy that I'm happy because I'm not. Happy. Or engaged. Tina: ...

Was this him trying to tell her something? I'm not sure. We don't see much more of them talking like this later in the movie because of everything else that happens. I'm kind of a little bummed about Queenie, though...I mean she was never my favorite character, but I liked her. Except when she crossed over to Grindelwald's side, I was like "No! You're better than this." Jacob was, understandably, upset. As for Leta's fate, that was unfortunate. When she said I love you, that was for Theseus, her fiancee, no? That's what I thought at least.

And in the end, Credence is supposedly Aurelius Dumbledore, surprise. A LOT of stuff happened in this movie that I think could have been either two movies or not stuffing so much into one. Like it had promising points, but it was just too much. At least too much to take in at 11 at night before going to sleep, imo. It wasn't too bad though. I'm looking forward to the 3rd movie!

I thought the first Fantastic Beast movie was alright; it was enjoyable. The second was bad, but at least I had Grindelwald to simp over.

The third was, quite possible, the worst film I ever saw. I almost fell asleep watching it, and that never happened to me at a cinema. Even to this day, if you would give me a million dollars, I wouldn't be able to tell you what happened in it. A mess. I know very few people that enjoyed it, but all the power to them! I'm happy someone was pleased with it- it just wasn't for me.

That being said, love sexy Dumbledore as Jude Law. Wish they'd have given him his magnificent robes, and that they remembered he never was a Defence teacher, but other than that, I liked him. I wish they would have spent more time with him and Grindelwald.

I always sneak in Nagini whenever possible when I write Voldemort, and I am sure at some point I'll write a scene where they actually met, but it won't be a story in it's own right- just a detail in Voldemort's.

I love that era, and I will write more in it, only I will not take anything in it as canon, with few exceptions (I already had Vinda and Abernathy used as G's followers, for example). But I will ignore most of what we learn in the movies (also I can't remember what happened in the last one haha).

Both Queenie and Abernathy go through the same costume phasis - from pink, to red/auburn (in her case, elements of red in her dress too) and then, as they’ve fully joined Grindelwald, black and white.

It’s interesting, because we see something like this for Credence too: especially the black and white wardrobe he wears at first is interesting, because at this time, he’s still under the control of someone who leads an agressive and excluding cause too (parallels between Grindelwald and Mary Lou are certainly there, especially in the last scene when he literally stands in a room with an alike architecture to Second Salemer’s orphanage (mostly the railing behing them).

You could argue that, when they were wearing pink, their life was alright (especially since this works with Credence - his life never was alright) - the auburn could symbolize vulnerability (and where it ultimately leads them) and the black and white adapting to a cause that stands for a crass separation/radical ideas.

Interstingly, we see Abernathy on both the posters and in his last scenes (after he picks up the Lestrange family tree (!)  in a coat that is, remotely, blue - a colour we mostly on people actively fighting, firmly on some level of good side or with potential to join it - again, I believe dark blue coats are going to become this sides’ signature team costume.

Is it just me or does Colleen Atwood of these movies get to know more than anyone else working on these films? XDD

Edit: There’s more:

Queenie is wearing red shoes, which are often used in movies as a symbol of a woman growing up.

In the first movie, she’s also wearing a deep blue dress, while otherwise, pink is her signature colour

Grindelwald himself is wearing dark blue - the colour has a calming effect, and it could be a calculated element to present himself as a hero/friend to his followers - plus, his blue is going rather into the direction of teal >>

among Grindelwald’s followers, we see some dark green - interestingly, this could work as a contrast/other end of the scale to the characters wearing red and auburn initially/still may turn around

Wait... Abernathy and Vinda took the Lestrange family tree from the Room of Records and brought it to the Lestrange family tomb. They could have swapped it with an imitation, right? Or maybe they have manipulated the original? (I don't think this should be easy but who knows what you can do with dark magic!) But this leaves some room for what happened to Corvus... maybe he didn't die after all?
