last night during the q&a portion of the orville peck event at the grammy museum, he told us that he's in a group chat with fellow queer country artists tj osborne, waylon payne, and fancy hagood.

the name of the chat is "the highgaymen" and i have never been more delighted in my life

The noise I made when I saw that Orville Peck covered Rhinestone Cowboy was wild. Then I saw he sang it with 3 other gay country artists and proceeded to freak out even more.

there's this song that i was listening to a lot awhile ago that i really liked but hadn't really paid close attention to the lyrics of and every time i heard it i was like why is this fairly simple song making me feel so emotional and then i looked up the lyrics and like. it's about being young and closeted and in love. like, that's not an interpretation. that is explicitly what it is. and i was like. oh. yes of course. and now every time i hear it i am reminded that sometimes i am dumb.

Change — Layne Stein music video

Although The Sing-Off was a competition show, many of the participants bonded over their love of making music, and some have continued to work together in the years since their time in the TV spotlight. When Layne found himself with some extended time at home following the birth of his daughter, of course it was time to make some more music with one of his favorite past collaborators. And Christina's new, hopeful ballad came along at just the right moment.

My favorite bits:

watching Layne gradually build the layers of rhythm, countermelody, and harmonies (He has the range, darling!)

DeeDee's gorgeous, soulful lead vocals

those lovely ascending bell chords

the gasp and exhale behind ♫ "everybody's breathing" ♫

Layne's smooth harmonized riffs in the bridge

the extra grit DeeDee puts into the final chorus and outro section

pulling back to the simplicity of just lead vocals and clapping for the coda

Trivia:

Layne and DeeDee met when their respective a cappella groups, VoicePlay and Ten, competed on the fourth season of The Sing-Off.

Layne had previously spearheaded VoicePlay's "Collide" project, creating music videos with folks from other Sing-Off groups that they released as season 4 aired. And DeeDee was their final guest artist during the initial run.

This is the only video on the Laynee YouTube channel to date (and only one of two on the Facebook page), but it's not like the guy isn't busy enough with VoicePlay, PattyCake, and his ever-growing extended family.

Ashgrove is a small city in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains, out of the way and isolated enough that shapeshifter Kris Vincent thought would be the perfect escape from their problems. But when the surrounding forest starts violently taking over and his crush's mentor goes missing, his reluctant involvement may force him to both face his past and consider his future after all. A contemporary fantasy with an all-queer cast and anti-establishment themes.
