“Colin, you better have a damn good reason for showing up at 7 am.”
“Why, you got someone here?”
“Of course not.”
Meanwhile, the not-someone upstairs…

Not saying this would have been a better ending to S3 — but I’m not not saying it.

Five Start Armageddon
This week’s prompt in the GO Reference Library study club was the Them. And this immediately popped into my head! I loved the Famous Five as a kid, and Eileen Soper, who illustrated them, made such lovely art.
Edit: This is now available as a print on my InPrnt store - currently with 25% off!

I'm working on something about the inadvertent queerness of Enid Blyton's works. So if you have absolutely anything to say on this matter, up to and including:
the transess of George Kirrin
Bill unorthodox gender presentation
Bill and Clarissa
The lesbian undertones in both Malory towers and St Clares
Adaptations adding/ removing queerness
anything else
Please, please, please talk to me about this in any way shape or form. I would love to hear anything you have to say.

I finished my book!
Tumblr media
[Image description: The book "Five on a Treasure Island" by Enid Blyton. The cover shows a watercolour painting of the four children in a rowing boat on the water. They are all looking down at a dog in the water, holding a piece of paper in his mouth. One of the children puts a hand on the edge of the boat and leans down to take the paper. There is a small rocky island in the background, with a thrown-up shipwreck on some rocks just in front of it. End ID.]
I love this book series and I have loved it since I was quite young. I have read this specific book too many times to count! I had a collection of several stories from this series, and read it over and over.
I recently found out that there is actually 21 books in this series!! And so many of them I have never read. I love the characters. It is quite easy for me to read because of age range it is aimed at, which makes me enjoy it way more. It is also not too long, so I don't get lost as much.
I am so happy to be reading again. I read a LOT of fanfiction, but I have missed "real" books. It makes me feel safe and calm to go into another world. Especially this one, because it is so familiar to me.
I love to read!!! 😄

Are audio/radio dramas for children not a common thing in other countries??????
I spent 90% of my childhood listening to audio dramas of Die fünf Freunde(Famous five), Hanni & Nanni (St. Clare's), TKKG and many more while playing with Legos or drawing or whatever.
What did all of you do if radio dramas aren't as widespread???? Sit in silence?????
A N D apparently you're allowed to just....make stories up for radio dramas???
Hanni & Nanni originally only consists of 6 books by Enid Blyton and 2 by Pamela Cox.
Do you know how many audio dramas there are in Germany????
76 episodes.
There are 22 Famous five books.
There are 157 audio dramas.
Are you telling me the rest of the world did not grow up listening to these adventures???? Y'all were robbed.

Enid Blyton is so funny to me bc its either "only one character is allowed a personality per book" or "boarding school series where the main character is abandoned after three books in favour of introducing 2-5 new characters every term, so half of the characters there in the first books never show up again"

I always find it funny that growing up I was a lot like George from The Famous Five because I refused to wear dresses, hated being called a girl and constantly tried to do what my older brother did but when I read the books my favourite character was Anne who is the complete opposite of me.

seven little australians by ethel turner is a truly beautiful novel. i have read it time and time again and, now i've bought the audiobook, just finished listening to it for the 100th time.
it kind of breaks my heart that, i assume, this beautiful piece of literature is limited to australian readers so i'm coming on here to just recommend it to the broader population. you do not have to be australian to read this book.
if you like anne of green gables or the secret seven/famous five or little women i think you'll like this too. For me at least, they kinda have similar vibes?
ANYWAY read australian literature. there are some truly gorgeous masterpieces that have come out of this country. don't limit yourself to primarily american and british literature which is what i often find myself doing.

So the thing that makes the whole George fiasco funnier is the fact that other characters often call her a "queer girl" and they have no clue how right they are

I read some more of my book in bed with my book light. It is the second Famous Five book.
It is just like I used to do almost every night when I was younger!! Lie in bed, all of me under the covers and use my clip-on book light or a torch to read 😄!
Sometimes I would get so sucked in to the story that I would finish a whole book! I would be yawning every other second by the end, usually. This time I had to really stop myself at the end of a chapter - not even let myself read the title of the next chapter! It is so easy to think "one more chapter, just one more!".
Anyway, bed time now. It feels so nice to do this just how I used to for years and years. It brings me so much comfort and makes me feel so safe, in a familiar world of a familiar book with familiar characters. And the familiar, comforting way of snuggling down in my bed and diving headfirst into a book by the light of a torch.
