“Socialization is the process by which individuals internalize the values, beliefs, and norms, of a given society and learn to function as members of a society (Conley, 2017, p., 118).” In the article, “The socialization of children and it’s impact on socialization and learning,” it discusses how media, parenting, education, and religion can affect children in the school ages of education. The agents of socialization are the following: family, school, peers, mass media, public opinion, and religion. All of these agents affect a child’s education experience. The following question was asked in the article, “What are the roles of school as well as the other agents of socialization in ensuring equal opportunity for all children from the elementary through college years (The Socialization Process and Its Impact on Children and Learning)?” The aspect of family plays a big role in a child’s education, some families are given amazing education, while others have to work extremely hard; and may even be discouraged against education. It all depends on how one cares for their child’s education. However, which the school system and in today’s society there's a certain status and also socioeconomic status that a family has that may determine how they will end up in the education system. Status is a definite social position that an individual has, and socioeconomic status is the position one holds in the economic level. “Sociologists often make a distinction between ascribed status and achieved status, which basically amounts to what you were born with versus what you become (Conley, 2017, p., 133).” This idea of the two different statuses shows that one can potentially overcome what they are born into. The second agent of socialization that affects children’s education is their influence from peers. Charles Horton Cooley does a good job of showing how individuals often are influenced by their peers with his theory called The looking glass self. This says, “I am not who I think I am, I am not who they think I am, I am who I think they think I am.” So if a student thinks someone is calling them a geek, they may say to themselves something like, “I need to stop looking smart in from of that person.” This will in turn be a negative experience, and therefore peers in the education may have a negative impact of children’s education. Media may have an increasingly negative effect on education, constantly saying it may be more important to look sexy and be violent and vulgar, than to put an emphasis on the importance of education; and this is where individuals can come alongside of students and try to show them balance and what will benefit them in the future. The media and internet have given students so many ways to spend their time creating a fake version of themselves, instead of creating real social interactions with real people. However, the media does have benefits and it is not all negative. The idea of religion seems to be fading, however it can be beneficial in many ways. “Leaders such as Martin Luther King, Abraham Lincoln and others have called upon religious values and teachings to awaken the moral sensibilities of the nation throughout our history (The Socialization Process and Its Impact on Children and Learning).” The idea of religion may be a secure component in the midst of school stresses. However, the idea of religion can cause a role conflict in some school students. They want to be a popular student at school and go to parties, but at the same time they feel that it may cause their values to deteriorate in certain ways of possibly being a leader in their youth group. The agents of socialization all play an important role in a child’s education and can be a major benefit when incorporated in a positive way.
