we need to talk about sring venka rn. it's very important. so tw: rape, sexism, suicide, and war violence. also the entire trilogy spoilers. continue on your own volition. this is gonna be long af :)

she's one of the strongest people in this godsforsaken series.

and I'm not just talking about the fact that she survived days upon days of rape and seeing other girls around her being used and killed in the cruelest ways, which that in itself should've been enough to break her (the only other two survivors literally drank bleach bc they couldn't survive it) ESPECIALLY in the society she lived in. where the patriarchy is still in rule and girls weren't good if they'd been "used". another rape victim was convinced they should both die ffs. bc even if they didn't want it and it was the worst thing they'd survived they should be ashamed of it. it wasn't their fault, but the world would make them think it was. THAT is one of the worst things anyone can go through.

and venka pushed through it. not without suffering, even if we're not shown more than glances at it. she pushed through it even when she had to "get creative" at an abortion, and then her father didn't even try to understand. her family was part of that society that told her she was wasted goods now, and she bared her teeth at them and dared them to try her again.

she was never supposed to be a soldier. she fought for that too. she would've been a lady in someone's state, but she defied the norms in her family and got them to let her become what she wanted. that takes courage, with the norms that she was supposed to follow. she was supposed to be just a pretty face, but she decided she could be that with fangs and claws as well. she took no bullshit and handled business and people like that. she went to battle with a bright red lip on. she was brash and had no mercy bc the world had shown her none of that once she stepped on the battlefield.

sure she started off as a spoiled princess but she died a fucking general.

and I wanna talk about her death too. or the unanswered revelation we get before it.

I'm ngl, I suspected her at the beginning of the burning god. there were too many coincidences. and yet I liked her too much, so I gaslighted myself. she'd come too far. and yet... idk what I believe, not fully at least. was she the mole? idk. she could've been, but the more k think about it the more it makes sense and doesn't at the same time.

nezha knew a lot, that's true. she survived in the anvil when they probably should've executed her, idc how persuasive she could've been. but if she was nezha's spy, out to kill Rin, why wouldn't she tell him about the bond between kitay and rin? why would she suffer through the anvil and the south, and the tikany bombing when she could've stayed in arlong?

so idk if she was a mole, even if rins accusations I thought of as well. idk if she was behind the weirdly feminine character letters. I do know she didn't want to kill Rin, she truly was her friend. she loved her.

sring venka was one of the best generals rin could have appointed to lead the nation if she'd been in the right mind to actually do it herself. and I'm so sorry she didn't get to impose castration as punishment for sexual abuse

weredoc au by @kit-screams-into-the-future - after a mishap with a bit of einstein's DNA and the power of Science, doc finds himself with a bit of a problem, if "a bit" means "11-feet-tall and very hairy and also not exactly human". basically he just turned himself into a dog man. a big, wet, sad dog man. taking the term "dog person" to new heights, doc and marty now have to figure out how restore doc to his previous state of being without anyone else in hill valley suspecting a thing. which is easy at first (doc's always been a bit of a recluse, so it's not like this is any different) but, of course, when have things like this ever stayed easy for long when it comes to these two...

spy x family au by @izzy-draws05 - Based on the anime Spy X Family! (I recommend reading a plot summary to get more details!) Doc is a scientist working for a spy agency, who needs a fake family to complete a mission. He adopts Marty, who as a young kid, escaped a lab that gave him the power to read minds. Queue found family and slice of life shenanigans while Doc tries to complete his mission, and Marty tries to help without revealing his secret and what he knows.

As an agent in the technical and scientific department, he spends most of his days buried in research or working on various inventions. He enjoys his work, and it pays well, but there’s one problem: every senior agent is expected to take on an apprentice, and Doc hasn’t yet. Were he not so indispensable to the agency, he suspects he would have been ‘released from service’ long ago. Regardless, he can’t risk losing his position—he needs the funding, after all, and he doesn’t have much else lined up. When a teen is brought in as a suspect relevant to a new case, Doc is able to clear the boy’s name thanks to the power of science. He finds himself taking a liking to the kid, though, seeing something there that reminds him of himself. Based on the fact in the movies they are just The Pinheads, but in the musical it is now Marty McFly and the Pinheads. In Josie and the Pussycats, they were just the Pussycats first. So tons of music industry corruption and Marty getting temporarily brainwashed into being a snobby rockstar.

For the history questions, what historical period has given you the most inspiration for your writing/muses?

I feel like it's a cop-out if I say "hmm, all of them," and this will end up just being a long recap of all my various projects over the years, but a) fuck it, this is my blog, I can talk about my own stuff if I want to, and b) there have indeed been Many, both fic and original. I usually pick settings for historical/historical fantasy AUs that I already know and want to write about, so:

The Lightbearers (Once Upon a Time) and Starlight & Strange Magic (Timeless) are both 19th-century Victorian England/Europe/steampunk, one in the 1850s and the other in the 1880s, with lots of magic and misadventure and so forth. You can tell that I was really into steampunk around 10 years ago (it was Formative, okay) and there were plenty of opportunities to do fun things with the historical setting and real-life personalities (the scene of Flynn breaking into Buckingham Palace to spy on Queen Victoria and William Gladstone remains a favorite). There is also my massive The Swan and Crossbones series (OUAT/Black Sails, two fics, 800k words), which is set in the 18th-century Caribbean, Golden Age of Piracy, and pre-Revolutionary America and is a retelling of Treasure Island + family saga + multi-generational/multi-character/multi-source material historical fiction, wherein I both wrote 800k words and did a shitton of extra research in the middle of getting a PhD. Don't ask me why I did this either, but I still re-read them, especially The Rose and Thorn (the second installment in the series) for my own pleasure.

My All Souls Timeless trilogy, following the source material, involved general historian/academia shenanigans and time travel to Elizabethan England, which was lots of fun to research and write about, even if I otherwise tend to think that the Tudors are often overdone. One of my most popular fics and best shorter-form (only 65k words...) historical/period pieces is deo volente (lux aeterna) for The Old Guard, which takes the crusades as its general starting point and thematic thread to explore religion, faith, immortality, power, war, violence, love, queerness, and other such things. Another popular fic of mine that spanned 600 years of history (starting in the 14th century) and explored various periods in detail is my Sandman fic and in the waking world we wait and want, with a particular emphasis on queer history. (You will find that crops up often in my stuff, regardless of the setting.) We also have why draw me to that promised land (Shadow and Bone), set in the 1980s Soviet Union (my boast for the accuracy of this fic, based on my previous studies in Russian/Soviet history, is that someone told me they learned more from this fic than an entire semester of a university class, which is not entirely good because I then had many questions about their professor, but there you have it).

When it comes to original novels, I started off also 10+ years ago with medieval England, with the The Lion and the Rose series and others. I am fond of this one because it was what got me into medieval history in the first place and because even now, it still sells fairly steadily and gives me a couple bucks in royalties every month. My newest book, The Empire of Bones, is based (loosely) on my fic The Key of Solomon and basically has everything I possibly wanted to cram into a fantasy historical setting, from anywhere and any time at all. Thus we have the Christian-era Roman Empire, an Islamic Carthage, the Byzantines, Imperial China, Russian Jews and Ukrainian Cossacks, the Mali Empire, Celtic Britain, so forth and etcetera, etcetera. So as noted, if it looks interesting, I will find a way to throw it and the kitchen sink in somewhere, and I have the issue that whenever I read a book about a new place or period, I go "hmm, I should figure out how to write something gay about this." Alas.

Everlark (Catching Fire, Ch. 11)

probably one of my fave everlark-heavy chapters and one i believe is so important and so huge for their relationship development. it's long but please bear with me because it's such a great chapter and there's so much to say and it'll be worth it!!! this is my best one

i love how haymitch and peeta have just become a part of katniss's family. like they don't seem out of place just sitting playing chess in her house.

peeta instantly picking up on her being hurt when she makes that noise and holding her steadily once he does

peeta carrying katniss up the stairs and tucking her into bed

katniss catching and holding his hand to keep him there and trying to fight off her lowered inhibitions due to the sleep syrup. that whole 'drunk words are sober thoughts' thing. she's fighting hard to 'control her tongue' but man, i wish she would've let go. there she goes keeping secrets from us again as the unreliable narrator

her holding his hand against her face, him warming her hand in his own. ugh. HANDS.

"stay with me" - the fact that she doesn't tell us what peeta says here but we know from mockingjay that he says 'always.' more evidence that peeta was endgame, carefully constructed by suzanne collins herself, from chapter one of book one

peeta being a husband and making sure katniss gets her daily cheese buns. for so much of the trilogy so far, we have seen gale be synonymous with providing for katniss and her family through hunting but peeta was that figure when he gave her the burnt bread and he's also that figure now, constantly providing her family with bread, keeping them fed and warm.

it is so IMPORTANT that katniss includes peeta in her family plant book project. it is her family book, passed on through generations. her mother and father worked on it together. it is so deeply hers and she lets him in. she lets him become a part of her family book by asking him to draw the pictures and including him in the process. i actually can't overstate the importance of this. this is something they do together that also later, after the war, becomes a crucial part of their healing process (and haymitch also ends up contributing - family!). at this point in the trilogy, he is her family.

i'm just going to include most of this passage and do a full on analysis of it because it is IMPORTANT:

I like to watch his hands as he works, making a blank page bloom with strokes of ink, adding touches of colour to our previously black and yellowish book. His face takes on a special look when he concentrates. His usual easy expression is replaced by something more intense and removed that suggests an entire world locked away inside him. I've seen flashes of this before: in the arena, or when he speaks to a crowd, or that time he shoved the Peacekeepers' guns away from me in District 11. I don't know quite what to make of it. I also become a little fixated on his eyelashes, which ordinarily you don't notice much because they're so blond. But up close, in the sunlight slanting in from the window, they're a light golden colour and so long I don't see how they keep from getting all tangled up when he blinks. One afternoon, Peeta stops shading a blossom and looks up so suddenly that I start, as though I were caught spying on him, which in a strange way maybe I was. But he only says, "You know, I think this is the first time we've ever done anything normal together." "Yeah," I agree. Our whole relationship has been tainted by the Games. Normal was never a part of it. "Nice for a change."

her fully checking him out as he works, his hands, his eyelashes. katniss describes him so poetically, like the sunshine slanting in from the window. what a romantic setting. she is constantly talking about him in sunlight (this is just one example) and it's like, in her eyes, there's always this glow around him, this light radiating from him. and then she gets caught checking him out.

peeta can make a blank page bloom with colour. and there we go with the language of growth again. this boy who radiates hope, possibility for katniss. this boy that she associates with life and with the growth of dandelions. he breathes life into things - in this case, her family book.

katniss is so intrigued by and deeply, carnally into his intensity. like she is down bad for him here. all her examples are examples of him protecting her: in the arena, in interviews, from the peacekeepers. she is so into this charming, dominant, protective, passionate side of him that i don't know how people can say she isn't romantically/sexually into him. like the proof is there. she doesn't know what to make of it because this side of him scratches an itch that she hasn't allowed herself to confront until now (and not even now, because she's unsure here but it's there. and we know she'll confront it after the war when she mentally can)

so far, katniss has been thinking that her relationship with peeta is the capitol's design. it is overwhelmed the the games, by the capitol, by snow, by the cameras, the flashing lights, the crowds, the having to 'act up' element of it, that katniss is constantly trying to tell herself that her connection to peeta is inauthentic in so many ways. but here, we see them in a 'normal' moment. a quiet intimate moment. a moment just for them. and it seems like bliss. removed from all the other capitol-forced elements, they choose to sit together and work on her family book and it is such a truly lovely moment for them. and it's not singular. while katniss is injured, they do it for a lengthy time. and i think that this particular chapter, this particular era of their relationship, post-victory tour and pre-quarter quell announcement, is when their relationship really develops to the point of katniss fully being in love with him. i think she was falling for him long before, and the victory tour also solidified them more but here, removed from the games and the capitol, given a sense of normalcy, i think katniss really got a taste of what life with peeta would be like, in all his shades. his kindness, his goodness, his intensity. she was thinking about all of it. him carrying her up and down stairs, bringing her bread, showing his passion/artistic talents, him just being there for her and her family, him looking after and protecting her despite her 'choosing' gale, how he looks, how he works, how he smiles and laughs, how he touches her. because of these days, she gets to the point where she's willing to die and leave prim and her mother behind to ensure peeta lives.

hello treasured mutual! if u have ocs i would like to hear about them.

uh um. (blows up) i dont. draw that much so bear with me maybe? i actually feel like im being actively hunted when people ask me to see them but........ I'm actually writing a book trilogy (more like planning it and organizing chapters, I'm awful on the actual writing part and do almost if not all of it by hand) about three siblings, the way they love and how it essentially drives them to destruction. Keith Holland Moore (my beautiful doomed boy)

His book is fully about self hatred being twisted into an awful concept of self-love. Becoming selfish and egocentric in an attempt to protect oneself, trying to convince himself he truly is an awful person who would never fully fit a society. Little does he know he actually is capable of love, even if he never was shown love and affection in a way he could understand. It's a story about hope and love, though it does end in tragedy. He is obsessed with the idea of hurting himself or others, for that is the only way he truly feels a genuine, equivalent connection with anyone. That is, until the story truly is developed!!!!! Have a sketch of younger him as well, that is totally not lore related:

Her and Keith are actually twins! Her whole story is about self-sacrifice, fighting for others when she couldn't really see her worth, blindly putting faith on people who were actively lying to her face. It's also about finding love in the most unlikely places in life, even if everything seems completelty lost and hopeless. I'd say she really is my precious lady<3

And then, ofc, their oldest sister, Elizabeth Holland Moore (you guys already know it)

Here are just some attempts at solidifying her design, my beautiful divorced lady. Doing her best to do what she can to change lives even if her methods aren't exactly morally correct, she never truly learned what affection was herself; she is the classic: "I'm paying for your food and a roof over your head, surely that's enough proof of my love?" Really detached from it all, she spends most of her time either sorting her very illegal business or simply smoking by herself. The proof that choosing to stay stoic and prideful can isolate yourself in the worst ways.

Uhhhh I've also been obsessed with my Disco Elysium OC's but after a certain scary (understatement) situation I've been a little ashamed of showing them. Here's Eye (or Aether c:)

I was actually planning on fully rendering this, but then, again, my motivation to do so and share his story was also completely drained with the whole Situation. He's a direct representation of how someone can be wronged by the healthcare system, though whenever I do write things about him, I prefer to share his own twisted point of view about things. A "spy" (though I'd say his tendency to observe comes mainly from an admiration and infatuation towards the world itself) selling information to whichever precincts will take his words as valid, mainly about organized crime and drug dealing, he sees people-watching as similar to studying birds. A little too in love with the pale, my funny trans guy with memory issues and a tendency to run away whenever things get too emotional. No vulnerability here.

Her portrait is bland half-purposefully? I also chose to not put more effort on this than I should, knowing it would not really be used that much. She's a direct representation of a social mask. Plainclothes officer who never truly learned to fully be herself when she's not on duty. She's actually everything I love about my culture, she's a direct love confession from me to all of Brazil and especially our women. She is a strong woman, very family-oriented and loves to take care of her own appearance! Very into music and writing, uses both of these medias to express feelings she truly doesn't know how to express out loud.

Good Omens currently has 85 signups to K-Pop's 86 … both trailing MXTX with 116.
