Also me: you’re missing the point! You’re missing the point! YOURE MISSING THE POINT! He grew up starving. His best friend almost died of hunger. Most of his people live in poverty. He watched children die in a bloodbath every year for the capital’s entertainment. The girl he loved went into the games. Was tortured by the capitol. His district was bombed out of existence. Nearly everyone he knew was killed. Their only crime was being fed up of being hungry and oppressed and sharing the same district as Katniss. All those innocent people. Murdered. He had to take refuge in a district that was bombed out of existence and forced to live underground. Of course he joined the war effort. Of course he designed unethical bombs and battle tactics. He wanted revenge. He wanted the capitol to have a taste of their own medicine. He wanted the rebellion to succeed. And tell me you could live through what he did, and that no part of you would be screaming for Justice and vengeance. Gale is you. You are Gale. He represents a part of feelings and actions that reside within us, even if you don’t act on it.

“But he killed prim!” Exactly! Gale loved prim. She was a second family to her. He looked after Katniss’ family. He saved them from the district 12 bombings. He loved her. He never would’ve put her in danger. He never would’ve put in order for a bombing if it would kill Prim. But coin would. And did. She took what was meant to be a tool of Gale’s righteous revenge for all the suffering he and his people suffered through, only for someone in power to take it and use it to kill someone he loved.

There’s some many lessons to take. We can’t control the things we create. War spares no one. Even justifiable rage and actions can end up rebounding and hurting those you love instead of your targets.

“He drops bombs on babies” is too simplistic of a takeaway and does a disservice to the story and Gale.

It’s 2024 and people are still blaming Gale for Prims death…

What about Beetee, who actually made the bomb? I don’t hear any one blaming him. You shouldn’t, but he’s more responsible than Gale is. What about Plutarch, who was the one who actually dropped the second bomb that killed Prim, assuming everything Snow said was correct. And of course, what about Coin, who gave the order to send medics, drop the bombs, and made sure Prim (A 13 year old child) was sent to an active war zone. The decision of the attack also happened when Gale, Katniss, and the rest of Star Squad 451 had no communication with the rebels, right after Gale was captured by Peacekeepers. He was in no way, shape or form, able to order a bombing at the Capital, nor would he have any idea Coin was about to bomb a bunch of kids and their own medics.

The only two people who should be held accountable for the deaths of the Capital Plaza are Coin and Plutarch. I love Gale, he’s not perfect and has his flaws, but he is not a child murder and he did not kill Prim. That’s all.

I personally think that she did bring the morphing because of her and Katniss’ relationship, but that doesn’t also mean that she and Gale had something going on on the side.

I was left standing. He was always going to pick her, and I was the fool who kept hoping that he would someday pick me.

I left his home, carefully walking outside, I glanced around and my eyes found Prim. She was putting the fallen snow into a bucket rather quickly.

Walking over to her, “What are you doing?” I county help but be curious over what was happening.

“Gale, “ she seemed to think of something before continuing. “The Peacegards whipped him, he’s in bad shape. The snow, I have to bring it to him.” Gale? He was injured?

I followed Prim into her home, and everything felt like chaos. Katniss was a mess, crying and screaming. Peeta was holding her back, Ms.Everdeen, was working on Gale, who seemed to be dead. Blood was everywhere.

I couldn't breathe. I made eye contact with Peeta who only casted me a glance before turning his attention back to Katniss, she was bleeding. I shouldn't be here, I ran out the door trying to breath the smell of blood filled my whole being, Gale’s lifeless body was playing like a loop thru my mind.

I don't know how I made it home, but I did and quickly made it into my room.

It was too much, again I had gotten my hopes up, and again I was hurt, it was a never ending cycle of pain. And now Gale is bleeding out in Katniss' home, everything was too much.

I lost it. I threw my dresser onto the floor, ripped my mirror off the wall and smashed it onto the floor. Someone was screaming and destroying my room. It was me. I had completely lost it, everything had become too much for me to handle.

I don't know how long I was there for but I do know that once I regained consciousness, my entire room was gone, everybit of furniture had been completely destroyed. And I laid at the center of it all. I was sobbing, so hard that I didn't even notice that my room door opened. My mom had returned to see the destruction I made. She didn't yell or try to scold me for the mess, instead she joined me on the floor and wrapped her arms around me.

“Shh, baby it's ok, I'm here.” she spoke so softly as she held on to me so tight. “Let it out baby, it's ok, I can take it.” And she did as I sobbed into her arms. She didn't once loosen her grip. She didn't once let go.

“Why am I so hard to love, why is loving me so hard?” Why am I so unwanted? Why do people struggle so hard to want me?

“I love you, I love you so much (Y/n).”My mom spoke as her grip around me tightened. “Let my love for you be enough (Y/n).” I wish it could be. But it wasn't, and I think that she knew that.

“I’m sorry.” It was all I could say.

“It’s ok, as long as I’m here you don't have to shoulder this pain. As long as I’m here you will always have someone who loves you more than life itself.” I let myself break down in her arms, knowing that she wouldn’t leave or let go.

I don't know how long we were there together, but the sun was already setting by the time I had managed to pull myself together.

“You ok?” I looked into her eyes and she looked so tired, she must have just come home from working and saw the mess I was in. I felt so guilty she deserved her rest, but here she was taking care of me instead.

“Yeah, thank you mom,” there was something I needed to do. “I need to see Gale. the Peaceguard.” She seemed to understand, as she let me go, and pulled me up to stand with her.

“Go.” She spoke with a tired smile.

I'm just gonna say it.

Gale isn't the bad guy.

He's a teenager with a trauma response.

Gale and Katniss were meant to show the ways people can react to similar traumas differently. They both lost their fathers in a mine accident and had to take over providing for their family.

For Katniss, hunting is a means to an end, and eventually becomes a solace, somewhere for her to feel small amounts of peace during her time in 13.

For Gale, hunting is a way to provide, yes, but also a way to express his hatred for the Capital. We also see the similarities between gales area of hunting expertise (traps) and the way the bombs that killed prim worked (attracting medical workers, trapping them in the same space as the injured before killing them). But I digress.

Gale and Katniss both have a lot of anger in their systems, so does peeta to an extent. The difference is that Gale expresses it externally. He sees these things that the capital has done (bombing the district, forcing the Victors to compete again) and wants vengeance and payback in a different way than katniss does.

Katniss wants vengeance in the form of change. She wants to make them suffer but because of her time in the games she understands just how vulnerable these people are, how they're just pawns for the Capital to use and abandon. They don't know anything else. They've been fed lies their entire life. To katniss, as irritable as most capital citizens may be, they are still people at the end of the day.

Gale wants vengeance in the form of revenge. He sees that there are two sides. Those with them, and those not with them.

We see this in the discussion about how to resolve the mine situation in district 2. Gale's ideal solution is to take the mountain down, trapping and killing everyone inside. He sees them as steadfastly against their cause, so there's no use in trying to sway them or keep them alive.

Gale and Katniss had the same trauma, but gale coped with it through anger and resentment, and Katniss coped with it through anger and a sense of justice.

(at the same time though I do have to admit that I'm not sure about the justice bit bc her goal the entire series is just to save and protect those she loves)

Gale would absolutely try to keep you as close as possible, at least for the first few weeks of you being back

He would try to keep you away from any triggers, although it's a fool's errand

Gale would be extremely affectionate, always holding your hand or wrapping an arm around you

He would be hesitant to let you stay with him when he makes weapons, worried that it would upset you

He wouldn’t be sure exactly how to comfort you, but he does his best, holding you close and pressing soft kisses to your face

You woke with a start, fear rushing through your veins. An ‘oomph’ noise came from your left, making you flinch. 

You hesitantly looked to the side, only to see Gale lying on the floor next to the bed. 

“Gale?” you whispered, furrowing your brows. He sat up and frowned, looking at you with worried eyes.

“Nightmare?”

You nodded, pulling your knees to your chest and wrapping your arms around them. Gale climbed back onto the bed and pulled you into his arms.

“..Sorry” you mumbled into his chest. 

“Don’t be” He pressed a kiss to your forehead. “You’re safe here, alright?” 

You nodded, hiding yourself against him. Gale held you tighter. “I’ll protect you.”

I'm rereading The Hunger Games, and I feel like it's an incredibly underrated moment when Katniss "shouts obscenities" at her mother. Just. Her mom's busy giving Gale herbal painkillers, and Katniss is getting dragged away by Haymitch and Peeta while screaming "yOU FUCKING BITCH GIVE HIM THE OPIUM" (at least, that's how I like to imagine it going)

Something 13 year old me just didn’t comprehend at such a young age was how complex Gale is. I literally bought into all the love triangle bullshit, even after hunger games preached of how the media will construe ANYTHING towards ‘love’ to distract from the gruesome and complex. 13 year old me fully bought into the ‘Gale is possessive. Gale is angry and not right for Katniss. Gale is too intense. Gale won’t shut up about their kiss.’ HE HAD EVER RIGHT TO BE ANGRY. Gale had everything, everything, taken from him. His family, his childhood, his freedom, his best friend. The only safe spot in his life. Not only does he have every right to be angry, he was in no way ‘unhealthily possessive.’ He was supportive. He reacted like a normal human being. He knew her bond with Peeta was different than theirs. Katniss even ADMITTED herselfff that she understood Gales point of view in book 2. For fucks sake HE STOPPED THEM MAKING OUT BECAUSE SHE WAS SILENTLY BREAKING DOWN AND HE KNEW IT DESPITE HER OWN DENIAL. Anyways. I love Everlark with my whole soul but I am a Gale defender. He wasn’t perfect, and I don’t agree with some of his other actions… but I will forever defend his and Katniss’s relationship arc.
