Amity and Hunter are competitive rivals who are extremely sassy and petty when they talk shit. Sébastie Jayde is the foundator of Pigeon Aéropostale, an upstart entreprise trying to establish the first postal airlines.

Sébastie is the mixed-race, illegitimate daughter of the pulp and paper baron Josse Quesqueraux, born of his affair with Adénie Jayde, his secretary. When it became obvious that Adénie was pregnant, Josse, unwilling to end the affair, moved her to the office of one of his mills in Urterre, where Sébastie was born. Initially, Josse did only that which he must do, but as Sébastie grew and Josse got to know her on his visite to Urterre, he became increasingly attached to his natural child. Eventually, he had Adénie and Sébastie moved back to Saint-Loegaire, where he enlisted Sébastie in the kind of private school where nobles and bourgeois who are not very rich send their children, and very rich ones send their bastards.

Sébastie grew with the benefits of a full education and her father's name as a boon and a burden, never fully part of the society in which she moved. As she grew older, she became increasingly interested in machinery: the great static ones like the ones at the mill where she grew up, but moreso the moving ones: the steamboats, the trains, these new motorized carts... The first time Sébastie saw a airplane, an ugly lumbering prototype at a technology fair to which her father had brought her, was a revelation of almost divine proportions.

With Judoc's financial support, Sébastie founded a workshop where she began to build her own stuttering, lumbering flying machines, amassing expertise and experience where she could find it. She would eventually earn her name when she became the first pilot to fly an aircraft across the straight seperating Iscea and Urterre. For her, this was the beginning of aeronautics as more than a hobby, and soon after, Pigeon Aéropostale was born.

re: s5 episodes 6 and 7

going into watching the x files, one of the very few things i knew about, because i had consulted my best friend wikipedia, was the emily plotline. i knew it was coming, so in a way it felt inevitable, and my reaction to finally reaching it was approached from the in-universe knowledge that this was how it would be from the start.

but now that i read the notes on my liveblog post, i think about how i would have interpreted the episode if i had not known that fact, or had i been a contemporary viewer. i think i would have also felt frustrated that they decided to give the female lead a baby over two episodes and then kill her off and act like nothing happened. i think i would be frustrated with that, especially when i have other, existing complaints about the way women are treated in this show. how once again the plotline, from its very core, revolves around removal of scully's reproductive agency. and i think that rings even more true nowadays.

it's interesting to imagine my reaction had i not known it was coming. because the foreshadowing was there, what with the abduction plotline and the clones and the earlier babies in tubes and hybridizations and blah blah blah. but i guess i would have thought (or hoped) it was handled in a different fashion.

we'll never really know what my first thoughts would have been had i not known what was eventually going to happen, but hearing your thoughts from seeing it is making me ponder.

Most of these suitors were perfectly nice, perfectly pleasant fellows, but even if she wasn't already in a committed (albeit secret) relationship with Edward, she couldn't see herself falling for any of them. She could perhaps see them being friends, casually dancing and having drinks and the like, but being romantically involved? No, she just couldn't see it. She felt nothing towards these men other than a polite indifference that would never evolve beyond anything platonic.

And then there were the smarmy ones, the overly cocky, overly smug ones that left her struggling not to roll her eyes as they rattled off their accomplishments, as if any one of them would make her swoon, so taken by their arrogance that she'd fall into their arms...ridiculous. She feigned politeness, of course, but it could be a challenge, especially when they all kept on coming-sometimes she wondered where her parents found all these nits, honestly.

"So needless to say, it's very nice to...get away from it all, at least for a little while," she sighed, as she leaned against Edward's shoulder with a small smile. "It'd be nice to get away a little longer, though...perhaps a vacation is in order, one of these days. A very, very long vacation..."

Perhaps a permanent one... she found herself thinking, as Edward took her hand to press a loving kiss to her knuckle, making her smile coyly, replaying their conversation from earlier, just before she was taken aside by the de Clair's. I hear California is quite lovely year-round...

It does get to me that there is now such exhaustion with the way Trump's rhetoric is escalating. John Kelly, Trump's former chief-of-staff, both confirmed the former president is a fascist, and wished he had Hitler's generals while he was in the White House. The current Republican presidential nominee has started calling all leftists "the enemy from within", and is now speaking about executing detractors. The richest man in the world, current owner of the largest social media platform in history, is bribing the public to vote for Donald Trump and has been blocking positive press about his opponent on Twitter. The Trump rally in Madison Square Garden was a steady march of people calling a political opponent the Antichrist, and topped off by the presidential candidate stating he would deport anywhere from 2 to 20 million US Americans "on day one". The 2016-2020 President of the United States wants Netanyahu to "finish the job" of committing genocide in Palestine, and is proudly stating he will pull support from Ukraine.

None of this is surprising. I understand why we are here, and how illustrative this is of the systemic bigotry foundational in the United States. That it has culminated in such deep fatigue is a tragedy that still gets to me, though. It does. Regardless of how things shake out, that feeling represents so many things worthy of mourning, fury, dismantling, and rehabilitation. I want better. I want to do better. I have to believe that others want these things, too.
