"Am I supposed to... charge it rent?"
I've started playing Fallen London and my hot take is that all the rats are just Rizzo. I'm going to throw this man at the horrors with the caveat that he runs into the occasional muppet, I'm sorry.
Also I guess this would make this guy a Fallen London OC? I called him Theodore Pilcrow because I finally get to use that word somewhere. c:

Hey before I get too far in Light fingers anybody want to weigh in on what direction I should take my PC?
For reference currently all she wants is to steal the diamond so that she can become a doctor and open her own clinic, further medical research, etc.
I could take her in a science over her patients route but I’m not sure if it would be fun to do an evil run on this ambition.
Please no spoilers for the ambition past looking for Dr Vaughan, I’m still pretty early on.

I've continued playing Fallen London on and off and I've been wanting to make a new ref for Mel for AAAGES, not just to update old art but also show some of the character development Mel's experienced after a handful of years in the Neath! The ES 'Adornment' especially was a major turning point for Philomel and sparked Mel's revolutionary leanings, and is when Mel began to realize Mel's formed meaningful ties just as important as Mel's quest for vengeance. This year's estival (the Coilheart Games) brought out another evolution of this, and Mel's settled into an investigative role in the adamant belief that such worldshattering secrets and threats that encompass the entire city should NOT be purposefully withheld from the people living in it.
Image text is probably hard to read, and there's a transcript below this readmore
Text Transcripts:
In the top right are some quick details. Mel's full name is Philomel Pelayo Muros. In the style of other Fallen London characters, Mel's epithet is 'the Steely-Eyed Gun-for-Hire'. Mel uses no pronouns, Mel's 38 years old and 5 feet 2 inches tall. Mel resides in the Flit, and Mel's profession is as a mercenary and freelance investigator. The faction Mel is closest to is the Revolutionaries, with which Mel has 15 Renown. Mel is an Ambition: Nemesis character.
Below this are some notable player character attributes. Of the main attributes, Philomel has high Dangerous and Watchful but low Persuasive. Mel also has high Dreaded. Of the quirks, Mel has high Steadfast, Melancholy, Ruthless, Forceful, and Magnanimous, but low Subtle and Heartless. Mel also has the quality 'Tragedy: Death of a Spouse'.
Paired with the portrait in the top left are these notes, pointing to several parts of the illustration: "Permanent dark circles from years of stress, poor sleep and frequent nightmares. Mel always looks exhausted and more than a little haunted."
"Mel has acne scars, and a lot of other scars. Mel accumulates wounds almost as quickly as Mel does nightmares."
"A skull fracture obtained during 'Adornment' resulted in some long-term afflictions. These include vision and hearing loss (both on Mel's left) as well as vertigo spells. Mel also fractured a wrist and dislocated a shoulder, now prone to re-injury."
"Mel originally shaved just for ease in tending to the fresh wound. But Mel ended up vibing with the style and is still sporting it a few years later."
The next notes point to the raven (named Sarangerel) perched on Mel's arm in another illustration: "A black raven from the Surface - very rare in the Neath. She spent a good many years with the Tomb-Colonist who first found and nursed her to health, and who gave her her name. Sadly, that chapter has come to an end. She's befriended Philomel, and is glad for Mel's companionship. She doesn't speak much these days, but she sings beautifully her wistful, plaintive melodies."
With the drawing of Mel's hand are these notes: "Finally bothered to ditch the New Newgate cuffs, but Mel got used to the weight and replaced them with heavy bracelets. The 'jewels' are coloured glass."
Each of Mel's possessions are accompanied by a note:
"Rose-Shaded Lenses. Prescription, for light sensitivity and migraine. They've seen better days."
"Revolutionary's Red Feather Pin. Kept close at hand, seldom displayed."
"Horseshoe Lapel Pin. Always part of Mel's ensemble. Worn in reference to a departed friend."
"Ring with a Rose Motif. Of significant sentimental importance. It was an anniversary gift."
"Simple Derringer. Typically hidden somewhere on Mel's person, though Mel now favours a knife. Mel's aim isn't what it used to be."

I think there’s something really fun you can do with the idea with two PCs doing the same ambition and interacting with each other, both in a treachery of clocks sense and in the sense of recognizing yourself through the other. How much you want to lean into the fact they walked the same path, if they really DID do the same things, what that means for them, etc.
However I do truly believe that the Vake respawns regularly like an MMO boss. Every BaL PC did do all that shit and it just came right back .

unfortunately cups has genuinely become one of my favorite masters despite (or maybe even because of) how little canon information we have about it. its very own noman chooses to impersonate mirrors rather than having its own identity. it has control over clocks in the neath because it may-or-may-not be trying to control time itself. it refuses to give the nemesis PC "the disrespect of an apology" despite otherwise begging for its life. it's one of probably very very few curators to even consider the concept of ""spring cleaning"" for its hoard. it's a trash panda. it's a murderer. it's so insufferably self-aggrandizing it's absurd. it's writing evil fanfiction with the nemesis PC as the 7th in a long line of equally tortured rpf blorbos and everyone else just had to deal with that. the outline of cups as a character is fascinating and alas i am enraptured to the point where i kinda regret letting caeru murk it

Cherish-His-Name Abernathy was called different things. To her girls or her clients, she was Mrs. Abernathy (though there had never been a Mr. Abernathy, she just thought it sounded more respectable than Miss). She allowed her friends to call her Cherish –no one was allowed her full first name besides her momma, and she passed many years back to an illness that sent Cherish out to the frontier in the first place. If she didn’t like you, you could call her Ma’am, but she would prefer you didn’t call her at all, thank-you-very-much.
Cherish had made a good life for herself once she got out here. You see, the frontier, where the men had been sent to work, wasn’t much of a place for wives and sweethearts. Workin’ women, now, there was plenty they could do out on the frontier. Cherish wasted no time building up a crew of good girls (and a few young men, truth be told, but most of them got scooped up into other work) who worked together to run a solid business and protect one another.
When she started, she hadn’t intended to put herself in charge of anything. But money had to be managed, room and board had to be taken care of, muscle had to be hired to protect the girls, and Cherish had a good head on her shoulders and a mind for money. It was a slow transition, but girls would come to her with problems to solve, disputes to mediate, and soon it was a legitimate business.
-----
Cherish-His-Name Abernathy was all of 5 feet tall, but her personality gave her a big stature. She commanded loyalty, and even though that didn’t mean everyone liked her, many respected her enough to leave well-enough alone. She made sure her girls got their dues, and the men she hired to protect them got privileges and pride in their work.
She had her share of lovers and clients, but when the question came to her settling down, she always had the same answer “When I can get me a man without the law deciding what’s mine is his, I’ll settle. Till then, ain’t gonna get with no one what can’t be content with me livin’ as I am.”
She’s been known to spend her nights with men and women, but is otherwise closed up about her love life. Who’s gonna argue with the Matron of the classiest women in town, after all? Especially when one of the men in her pocket was the Sheriff himself, who had taken a shine to some of her girls?
She tried not to have favorites among said girls, but there was a clear winner among them. Cora had been with her from the beginning, and the two were like sisters. Cora was the dancing flames of the fireplace where Cherish was the embers, and their temperaments complimented one another.
When Cora died in childbirth and her man didn’t wanna claim his children? Well, those twins were Cherish’s now. Even gave them her name. Mabel and Lucy Abernathy were gonna grow up in the best damn world Cherish could give them. Marta and Lucy grew up to be great girls –Lucy had an eye for business, and Marta dreamed of finding a good man and having a mess of little ones herself.
Cherish would do anything for them.
-----
It wasn’t all good things. Some people just don’t like powerful women. She made an enemy with a local thug, one she didn’t even bother interacting with for the first few years of their rivalry. He was little more than a nuisance, and Cherish couldn’t be bothered with small nuisances. When he came around her boys kicked him out without needing to be asked, and that was pretty much that. He was pestering other people around, and became an issue for many people in town, so he wasn’t even distinctly her issue.
He lived, then, mostly on the outskirts, only venturing into the town proper to make trouble. They would have gotten rid of him entirely, but, despite his general attitude, he was a good worker… and the frontier needed good workers. It was a surprise to everyone that he had gathered up his own little band of guys unhappy with how things were being done in this quiet little town.
It wasn’t that Cherish was even a special interest of this group, but when they struck, she and her girls were among the targets. Her memories of the chaos set her head reeling –she had been knocked out near the beginning of the scuffle, and only woke later to Lucy crying at her bedside. Her leg had been crushed, the doctor had said, and had to be amputated.
Marta, sweet Marta, had not made it.
When she could walk again, she would kill that man herself.

I've talked about this on the server before but I've gotten asks about it in the past and one recently, so I think I should try and, like, clear something about about my characters and also my design philosophy with them
None of my characters have accounts, and none of them really have a ton of interplay with major storylines at all. Some things are canon for them (Elliott eventually participates in the St. Dunstan's storyline, most of them participated in Horticulture Hell, Florence lost her house in the Great Sink, etc etc) but no one has any real impact on the world itself
And that's fine!
Obviously different strokes for different folks, I LOVE seeing people talk about their characters engaging in Seeking, or in Ambitions, or the Railway, and seeing how everyone navigates these things, but my characters don't really do any of that. "why not?" Well, simply put, it's for two main reasons. The first, I am far too lazy to try and make and maintain a bunch of separate accounts and worry about things being canon or not. I've got one (1) account and it's for meandering around and seeing and doing whatever I like
The second, that my characters are, first and foremost, built for roleplay. This is where they started, and where I intend to keep them. And we run into the problem occasionally when every character is head of the Railway, and every character has bagged a legend or gotten their heart's desire, and every character has etc etc etc, and then people have to figure out which parts to keep and how to reconcile that with eachother
But the main characters aren't out here in a vacuum. There's plenty of space around the main action to for side characters to exist. For people who aren't life changing or crucial to what's going on around them, but that add depth and flavor to what's happening. My guys are not PCs, they're the ones you run into for a storylet or two to help you along the path and then you don't see them again, and that's honestly where I like having them
I'm not having to vie for having random zailors on a tramp steamer, or for a milliner that works for the Empress' Court, or for a professor of medicine at Benthic, etc etc. There's plenty of space, and I think making people that occupy that is really where my heart lies
FL, at its core, is about the people around you that help you along the way to where you're going. It's about being and doing what you want, and what speaks to you. so I am <3

An Unusual Devil...?
As you're returning to your lodgings, you notice a strange woman in your path. Is she a devil? But devils usually aren't so... Blue. Is she a clay woman? But she would certainly be unfinished, wouldn't she? Oh god, she's turning to you. She looks like she wants a fight. What do you do?
ATTACK! Whatever she is, she's dangerous! Kill her before she kills you! A straightforward challenge Your Dangerous quality gives you a 100% chance of success.
Redirect Her She wants a fight. Who says it has to be against you? A modest challenge Your Persuasive quality gives you a 65% chance of success.
Approach Her She looks... Sad. Maybe she just needs a listening ear? A high-risk challenge Your Watchful quality gives you a 20% chance of success.
------------------------------------------------------
So those of you have been keeping up with me will know my character for Fallen London, Emery. But recently I made a second account and with that a second character to explore the Neath as. Meet Fae Ghuleh, a...
Okay, here's where I pull back the curtain, admit defeat, and tell you I don't know what the fuck she is. Like Emery, she was a pre-existing OC I didn't have much use for so I thought she would fit nicely into Fallen London. Only problem? She wasn't exactly designed to be human.
I initially thought about making her a Devil, but the Devils in Fallen London are for the most part just humans with amber eyes. (and also they're bees) I considered making her a clay woman, and more specifically an unfinished one, which could work but weirdly enough it's her long bushy hair that gives me pause. I could probably write off more of her unusual features like the horns with the lore of how the unfinished clay men are made, and her forehead is covered by her bangs so I could always put her symbol on there. However Fallen London has a lot of weird stuff in general with no particular explanations, so for now I'm just gonna make her vague even in universe. I appreciate suggestions though, mainly because what she is could determine her heart's desire... If she has one.
Anyway figurosity was used for the pose. Have a nice day.

I wanted to do the FL "steal something from my PC poll" trend but I made it too elaborate and now it's taking forever help
On an unrelated note, fellow Heart's Desires players: If, hypothetically, an endgame PC were to copy the contents of their Bestiary of the Hearts' Desires into another book, do you think the copy would retain any of the polythreme-like properties of the original (seemingly breathing and pulsing with a heartbeat), or would it just be an ordinary book other than the contents?

honestly part of the reason i've been really looking forward to finally playing light fingers (aside from the obvious horrors and whatnot) is because it, alongside bag a legend, contains a Choice™ i to this day am Extremely Torn About Making. like i've known for ages that the Choice™ exists in this ambition and STILL i am undecided about it. this Choice™ is of course. well. let's just say that by the time this ambition ends, caeru may not be the only catboy around town
