are the talking crows still around? what are They doing while all this drama is going on around them in the world
Mostly doing their own crow things and not commonly having direct and mutual interactions with other sophonts. They're similar to yotici in the capacity that they have Very different modes of living than most other sophonts, and they generally are not recognized as 'People' in the same sense as humans, elowey, qilik, caelin, and delkhin. However, (given their strategic and intelligent capacity for word mimicry) talking crows tend to be comprehended as unique magical animals or spirits, or are not recognized as a distinct type of entity but rather feed into broader corvid folklore (as they are very difficult to visually distinguish from many common crows).
They make a few appearances in Whitecalf as small flocks of crows trailing the pilgrimage, picking at its food supplies and occasionally scavenging on its dead. This is a family unit of talking crows that has suffered heavily in the drought, with very few of their chicks surviving infancy and even some of the healthiest adults dying of thirst and starvation. They have recognized this mass movement of big two legged people as a source of potential sustenance, and are very persistent and skilled in keeping themselves fed.
In-text they may come off as an ambiguous, possibly magical element (or partially hallucinatory) from the character POVs, due to them going from a mundane presence indistinguishable from common crows to them uttering dire threats in clear and fluent Wardi. This is very unsettling and hard to reconcile for most who witness this, but is actually just a learned method of taking advantage of beliefs in corvids as ill omens to frighten off or distract targets while another crow snatches bits of food or a nice wineskin.
#Couya is experiencing increasing breaks from reality at this time and it is VERY unsettling for her- especially given confirmation#that it's entirely real and other people can hear it too.#Even noticing the fact that the crows will proceed to snatch food from behind her back doesn't really click as 'Oh I'm being tricked' it#just seems like an additional layer to the sinister omen#Brakul's used to the concept of birds delivering omens (though not usually through speech) so he's just like Well. You Heard Them.#Not all talking crows actually talk with other people and frequent use of vocal mimicry is a cultural rather than ubiquitous factor.#These Wardi crows have generally made a good living without interacting with humans and thus their ability for speech is not#a broadly recognized factor in Imperial Wardin and will usually be seen as singularly unusual and frightening when they DO utilize it.#talking crows#couya haidamane#brakul red dog

Im too lazy to hunt for the screenshots AND I recognize that its happened at earlier parts of the story BUT
Laois protecting Marcille from the falling icicles is just the EXACT reason her and Chilchuck stayed despite everything (besides Falin for Marcille of course). Despite the two of them not understanding him, despite them being put off by his mannerisms at times, despite their varying levels of discomfort around monster food they KNOW at the end of the day Laois has their backs.
He will do everything in his power to keep his party safe with zero hesitation or convincing and he does so because he genuinely cares about them. He might not know how to time a Morale Boosting Speech for when people *dont* have a mouth full of food, but they know he'll be there for them when they need him the most.
#YES Im including Chilchuck#Marcille was/is more extra with her dislike of monster food#especially in the beginning#but for most of her opinions that she had. Chilchuck was mirroring them in a quieter way#PLUS#Do you think his Union Ass would've stayed one second longer than necessary in that party if he didnt need to???#he's sticking around because he knows a job with a leader like Laois is rare and he doesnt want to give that up#so yeah anyway#obviously this is more of a direct reminder for Marcille but Chilchuck definitely factors into this too#as the other og member that stayed#anyway I could rant about this for a while#but in short. your honor they care about each other. they may not understand Laois but they Do Like him#as my friend put it#dungeon meshi#laois#Chilchuck#marcille

alright you know what FINE horror cooks. even though he struggles with food and has a bad relationship with it sure he'll cook. but can we at least give him the liberty of getting to fuck around with people because of it ok FINE let me be specific i mean feeding other people dead remains and stuff ok 😒😒😒 ok 😒😒😒
oh so sweet he just made a five course meal and a fancy steak!!!! its gold plated!!!! it smells so good!!!! soooo delish and hmm a bit hard to chew but maybe he just made it a bit overcooked dont worry horror you tried your hardest. what do you mean you put blood sweat and tears into it with a oddly evil grin on your face. what is in my cup of water bro. what did I JUST EAT
#only if he really hates you or just really wants to see someone suffer#usually paps would be the 1 to make the food and he gets to enjoy the reaction#but UNFORTUNATELY papyrus is in horrortale and horrors in fuck knows where in the multiverse#so he has to make his own entertainment SMH#he might be fighting with himself the entire process of making the meal butttttttt#its all worth it to see the mortified and sickly expression people make before immediately wanting to throw up. so sweet!#he does this to dust and killer after they fight except its not human remains#he steals one of killer's dust jars and makes desserts with it! they just invented this cool new form of powdered sugar omg!#unfortunately it looks surprisingly convincing. dust doesnt know the difference#he immediately runs to the bathroom to throw up and take several showers to purge what hes done. goddamn WHO DID HE JUST EAT FUCK YOU HORRO#killer only knows the difference because he could feel the texture difference on his hands and tongue and it was too late LMAO#he did not smell anything he did not taste anything he did not see anything vaguely wrong#and like horror cooks all the time and the foods fine!!!! so like........ ok fine maybe hell eat it. and then he felt the taste#he doesnt swallow he doesnt do anything except turn his head and immediately spit the food out onto the ground (horror found this HILARIOUS#but the moment he was alone bro starting PUUUURGING his guts out. he knows exactly which dust jar horror took he knows EXACTLY WHO HE ATE#would be 10x funnier if horror used a papyrus's dust for it#but would he ever do that??? would he put himself through that???#i would like to think that horror's able to distinguish between his own papyrus and every other papyrus out there#for cruelty factor if hes able to get through it with that thought than yes#but i also get that he might not be able to go through with it bc its a papyrus's dust#horror's a bit of a prick perchance. just a bit tho maybe idk#downright evil actually. all of them are. but only to eachother#mtt upon thee i love these three#tricule hc#killer sans#dust sans#horror sans#murder time trio#utmv#sans au

i think the most annoying part of dog food discourse is how many people will act as though proplan/hill’s/Royal canin diets aren’t extremely and prohibitively expensive and that THAT is the reason so many people look into healthy alternatives.
People complain about corn being in the first five ingredients on most of those feeds because, regardless of other factors here, that is not an expensive ingredient. But it makes up a large chunk of the dry food. So the dry food should be fairly affordable, right?
Oh… with tax you’re spending about $100 for one 45lb bag of food where the third ingredient is wheat and the fourth and fifth ingredients are corn.
Oh… well! It’s slightly cheaper! But the second ingredient is rice, third is wheat, fourth is corn, and then fifth is poultry byproduct. None of those are very expensive so this just must be the low end cost of dog food unfortunately. The vets recommend it so surely that means prices aren’t inflated, right?
Oh? This one has similar ingredients with the only real difference being no corn? And it’s half the price?? Well surely that’s just a fluke.
Oh. Oh no.
This one even has CORN in it and it’s $20 cheaper?? Wow!
Like listen at some point I don’t care if your dog food has the ichor of the gods in it, I’m not spending $100 every five days if there are cheaper options with just as many “good” ingredients in it. If you think I’m a dog abuser because I can’t afford this overpriced garbage, that’s too bad. I don’t care. My dogs are perfectly healthy with the food I give them. Great weight and great coat. People giving dog food recommendations that aren’t those top three hyper-expensive dog foods aren’t trying to epic own those dastardly vets half the time, but I really don’t blame the ones who do lose trust in vets when the only heartworm protection they recommend lately are expensive triple-action brands like Simparica Trio that costs $120+ as opposed to the other heartworm protections that are only about $40-$60 on average, which is still cheaper even if you add on a $20-$40 flea and tick protection separately, and only recommend dog food that costs $85+ a bag even if your dog doesn’t have specialized dietary needs.
Those top three foods are GREAT at making competent prescription diets, I don’t deny that. I do still have to criticize the pricing of those prescription diets though because I have spoken to DOZENS of people who had to pull their pets off of a prescription diet and struggle to find something comparable because they couldn’t afford the food, and that’s terrible! These are not poor companies! Purina, Royal Canin, and Hill’s can ABSOLUTELY afford to lower their prices to make their food accessible to people who need it for their animals but they don’t. They probably never will. Because at the core they are run by greedy corporations. It doesn’t matter how many good nutritionists are on board if the company is run by people who put profits over customers and make the food impossible for people to afford.
#I keep seeing posts from people on both sides of this#and it is frustrating to see how many vets don’t seem to acknowledge#that a MASSIVE part of the dog food debate has and always will be#the inaccessibility of these three brands#because whether corn is good or bad or neutral for a dog#It’s a cheap ingredient#any meat byproducts are a cheap ingredient#wheat in any form is a cheap ingredient#rice is a cheap ingredient#they aren’t putting Diamond dust and gold flakes in the kibble it’s very accessible and affordable ingredients for the most part#and many comparatively smaller companies use very similar ingredients and make food people can actually afford#So yeah when people look at these factors it does make them distrust vets who will almost exclusively push expensive brands#and that’s where the distrust is coming from#it’s not primarily smug tiktok kids who think they know everything#it’s just people who have less money than you and get treated like they care less for their animals because of it lol#and people who feel scammed because anything veterinary is already expensive to the point not everyone can afford it as regularly as needed#the fact people have to give pets vaccines themselves to make ends meet because most vets charge so much just to walk in the door#is a sign of a larger problem#I criticize people who avoid taking animals with surprise sickness or injuries to the vet#but it’s not exactly hard to see why that isn’t even an option for a lot of people#people can’t even afford surgery on themselves if they’re suddenly injured out of the blue in this country#So I can’t pretend to be shocked they don’t have $10k squirreled away if something unavoidable happens to a pet#no one is entitled to an animal they can’t afford yes yes but a routine vet visit shouldn’t be $600-$1000 per animal sorry#give me a copay or something

logically i know the odds are stacked against them and it would be very bad if it did happen but i think it would be hilarious if those escaped rhesus monkeys established an invasive population in south carolina. like that would be really funny
#like theres specific traits that are make invasive species so successful like efficient reproduction good foraging skills etc etc as well as#environmental factors like food sources and habitat. and those just arent really in the cards for rhesus monkeys#like yeah they wouldnt have any predators but like 40 monkeys arent hard to miss and they are actively tracking them down#plus they only have like one baby per year#and the environment of south carolina doesnt seem super conducive to rhesus monkey survival but idk too much abt that region#plus theyre captive raised monkeys so they dont really have the survival skills necessary#but. it would be funny#rambles

I get why potatoes are popularly associated with Ireland and to a lesser extent other parts of Europe, but it's a bit messed up that most people will think potatoes were originally cultivated in Ireland and not ancient Peru and Bolivia like they actually are
#the humble potato. blessed be to a common starch i can actually eat#food#food history#don't quote me on this but I'm p sure one of the contributing factors of the Irish potato famine was bc taters AREN'T native to Eire#and when this foreign crop replaced native staples it was less resistant to the diseases of Ireland#i don't remember off the top of my head if potato blight originated in Ireland itself or was imported with the potatoes#but the fact that Ireland no longer had native crops for the people to eat was a major factor#unless you were lucky enough to live on the Irish coasts and harvest seaweed

Having the worst flare up ever right now :(
Tw: flare up vent, food and medical talk below the cut, possible emetophobia warning
I’m pretty sure I have some kind of delayed gastric emptying, and it’s been getting progressively worse these last few years, especially when the flare ups hit.
Water is my enemy but if I don’t drink it I’ll die so I have to choose being mega dehydrated and eating or being moderately dehydrated and not eating, and I am. So. Hungry.
I’ve found smoothies somewhat safe, but I can only have like 1/2 a cup at max and it takes upwards of an hour to finish.
I’m so nauseous and my stomach hurts so bad. I can tell like I can feel the C food and liquid in my throat/stomach, especially when I’m drinking.
This flare up has lasted nearly a week now (6 days), doesn’t seem to be going anywhere anytime soon, and I’m getting a little desperate. Have a GP appointment tomorrow, though, thank god.
Any suggestions for safe food ideas to try to eat, just something small and nutrient dense (good bit of sodium. maybe also protein?) to get down, would be great.

i’ve made a few batches of chia seed pudding and it’s sooooo fucking good
#my partner and i were trying to recreate our favorite from a restaurant several cities away#we can’t get it often so it’s like… how can we make a similar one at home? mm mmm mmmmmmm#the only x factor is the consistency. the first batch was perfect but the second was a little too liquidy so i’m hoping this third one is 👍#i mixed the ingredients in the ninja last time and i think that may have been why. i did the same today but added more chia seeds#to compensate#— idle chatter#cw food

Would you mind sharing your views on backpacking? 👀
Take all of this with a grain of salt because I'm mostly just bothered by backpacking content on Instagram.
I think the concept is fine. I'd actually like to do some backpacking some time.
But backpacking content, as well as most overland* content, always has a really weird vibe. It almost feels like cosplaying poverty if you know what I mean??
It's almost always young people from the so called "West" and almost always they're somewhere in South or Southeast Asia. The most popular backpacking destinations I'm seeing at the moment are Bali (exclusively that part of Indonesia for some reason), Thailand, Vietnam and Sri Lanka. The algorithm has recently also started showing me content from Pakistan, India and Afghanistan.
Since flights to these destinations are usually quite expensive, and many of these people stay abroad long enough that they might need a visa and that accommodation and food would also add up, it can be safely assumed these people have a certain amount of financial stability. Some of them are full time influencers too.
And while travelling with a backpack instead of a suitcase makes sense, and while you want to have an "authentic" experience, the vibe on those videos is often sooooo weird.
They're always like "I just spent 45h standing in a cramped bus without AC because it was only $1. I'm sleeping on the floor of this abandoned building that costs me $4 a night. I only carry 2 t-shirts with me, can't find a laundromat and I'm travelling for 3 months. Yesterday I got scammed and got food poisoning."
And I'm like why are you doing this? Is it really more "authentic" just because it's a foreign country? You can find the same uncomfortable situations and people who live like that all the time in your home country, but when you're abroad it's cool and authentic and #humbling #eatpraylove. Meanwhile there's also people in that same country you're backpacking through who, like, have a comparable standard of living you're used to. Your holiday doesn't have to be luxury resorts but it also doesn't have to be absolutely god awful.
And of course there's also the factor of adrenaline and stepping out of your comfort zone but with these videos it seems like they're almost glamorising having an awful time in an "exotic" country because that's what it's supposed to be like? I guess?
Idk I feel like I should get the opinion of someone living in one of those backpacking hotspots to make sure I'm not just getting annoyed at nothing but I think the vibe is off.
*overland content as in "travelling from XY to YZ without flying - Day 420" type videos. They're often interesting and I follow some of those people and I actually have some ideas for cool overland or long distance train trips but some of the accounts also have a weird vibe. Most of the ones I saw were men and they're like hitchhiking through some desert somewhere and I'm like oh this would feel so unsafe to me as someone perceived female. And obviously they also make lots of content where you know they have lots money because they've been travelling for several months but it has that same fake low budget backpacker vibe.
I hope this makes sense. I'm not sure it does.
#Comparable standard of living as in no two places are the same#And climate and the overall economy of the country and so many other factors can make a difference to how people are living#But there are people in Vietnam Thailand etc who are just. You know. Leading a normal life. Who have comfortable flats.#There are also rich people everywhere obv#There are hotels and bnbs in every price range everywhere#There are cheap restaurants or street food stalls that locals also go to that won't give you food poisoning#I've never been to any of these countries but like logically#And based on what I've seen from other people#But backpacking content is always like omg these natives are so nice and humble 🥺#Asks

While I'm in a rental and I know it can't be guaranteed to stay, I'm going to plant Richmond Birdwing Vine (pararistolochia praevenosa), Purple Violet (viola betonicifolia), and Native Violet (viola hederacea).
They're the host plants for the Richmond Birdwing and Australian Fritillary butterflies, and I keep seeing that post about a man in America who helped out significantly I think with the California pipevine swallowtail.
There's so much I can't do to help with the environment, but planting a vine I'll need to trim in my own yard alongside a handful of other native plants and having a bit of a veggie garden helps myself, my family, and some animals in the area.
#the solarpunk stuff I see is#well it's frequently all art#and when it's not it's things that feel unattainable/insurmountable to do on top of my daily life#I've a full time job and I have to factor in travel to and from that job (public transport here is shit so it takes about an hour each way)#and then maintaining the house in my free time on what little energy I have left#it feels insane to think 'well I also want to grow more food and store it and make a solar dehydrator and make more food from scratch and#get in touch with people in the community that are like minded. and get mad at our local government for its shitty maintenance of the lake#that has been cautioned against people swimming in it bc it'll make you sick#and this and that and everything else and visible mending also#fuck#so#I'm planting some new plants and impatiently waiting for my tomatoes and that's enough for now 😌
