LEEAH JOO
Korean-American painter Leeah Joo’s work is inspired by the enigmatic and hidden. In her illusionist paintings, she teases our predisposition to probe and uncover. Intriguing parcels in her Pojagi series are enveloped by a lavish, traditional Korean wrapping cloth and beckon to be unpacked. The richly detailed paintings of lacey drapery in her Parrhasius series present an open-ended narrative, inviting us to question what lies behind the curtain. Joo studied painting and art history at Indiana University in Bloomington and received her MFA in painting from the Yale School of Art, Her paintings have been exhibited widely in the U.S. and South Korea. She is the recipient of notable awards from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation, George Sugarman Foundation, Connecticut Commission on Arts and the Puffin Foundation. Currently, Leeah Joo lives and paints in Middlebury, Connecticut and teaches at Southern CT State University and Paier College.

I finally finished a useable shirt block pattern!! 😩🙏✨😍✂🧵👔👕
which is not exciting because I can have dress shirts that fit the way I want now (basic, boring, for normal people who aren't megalomaniacs) but because this is the men's equivalent of a bodice block, which means I can have ANY TOP I WANT now!! 😤💪 TAKE THAT MEN'S FASHION!! *evil laughter*
#sewing#pattern drafting#block pattern#men's fashion#shirt#transmasc#also all of this fabric was sourced from old bed sheets & curtains most of which I got at the local charity shop <3#(the white fabric is my enemy cause its threadcount is way too high making it nearly-unpinnable 😩#it has been demoted from main fabric to stiffening layer fabric only from now on smh)

So, I felt like sewing today.
I remembered I had a piece of curtain that I intended to turn into a t-shirt, I found it in a thrift store for 50 cents and thought how I would really like a shirt with this pattern! It's a very old, woven piece of fabric, made out of pure cotton, and it's very strong and durable, and not transparent at all, with pretty blue leaves and berries on it.
I looked trough all of the t-shirts I own, and found this purple one had a very interesting collar, and I liked the way it looked on me, so I decided to duplicate that same shirt.
If I was really wanting to make it perfect, I'd make a pattern out of paper, then copy it to the fabric, then cut. But I just went straight to cutting, I feel like I can guesstimate this out.
I've made a pajama shirt once, so I've learned that the hardest thing to make is the collar. I spent some time figuring out how to make a neat-looking collar this time, and it took me a few tries to overlapping this blue fabric on one side and the other before I figured it out. But I think this collar can work! I specifically used some stretchy fabric to make it easier on myself. Here's the recreation of the collar:
I sewed the sides together, which was easy, and now the last, most annoying step, to make the sleeves, and to sew them on. Last time I sewed on the sleeves wrong 3 times in a row, I hope this time to get it right slightly sooner.
I realized at this point that the sleeves would look the best if I put the same collar-type ending on them, and it was soo annoying, I am doing this with needle and thread, and my technique required sewing it twice. So I was annoyed. The sleeves were also slightly poofy in the original, so I made sure to add a slight poof to them here as well. It felt like I spent an hour doing each one, but when they were done, they looked so good, I don't regret putting in the extra effort.
I actually managed to put the sleeves on correctly on the first try, which was a huge relief. And she's done!
I'm actually a bit surprised that it doesn't even look that hand-made, it seems the neat collar makes it look like a real shirt. I can actually wear this outside, and fulfill my dreams of looking like a 90s curtain! It feels so very good on my skin though, it's light-colored so it's great for the sunny weather, it will not easily wear out or fall apart because it's woven! That is an actual non-transparent, durable white shirt, something you can't get that easily anymore. It took me about 7 hours to make by hand.
Also if you're wondering why I couldn't tidy up my bed the whole time I was doing this. Well. I had priorities and also I am being honest on the internet about living in a messy bed. It would have been lying if I had tidied it up :) (And to be extra honest it's just a mattress on the floor, I migrate to the floor sometimes.)
#sewing#copy paste shirt#cotton shirt#diy#making clothing#making shirts#reusing old fabric#curtain fabric#curtain to shirt#i immediately wore this outside lol#i am in love with the shirt#i am going to brag to everyone abt it

#TADAAAA :D#ohh there's SO much going on here#the first one is interesting bc i tried to avoid gifs of the outside#but this one strikes me as a moment from before the blog started#a brief moment of introspection and dwelling on the past as he looks out at the dwindling remains of the forest#though to him i’m sure any second thought about what could’ve been is a second wasted and he snaps himself out of it shortly after#THE BEAR THE TEDDY BEAR#it's a foreboding reference to the barbaloots it's a representation of the past it's everything to me :D#the spotlight for being the center of attention and scrutiny alike; loud and flashy juxtaposed with the softer candles on the other side#the gears are for the factory but note how clean it looks#showing his desperate attempts to keep his reputation intact and insist that absolutely nobody has died within the walls of this place#the velvety red fabric resembles both theater curtains (performance and the blog) and the curtains in his office#and they’re positioned opposite to the one glimpse we see of the outside world calling back to that one scene in the 1972 version#a camera for both his surveillance over thneedville and the press plus a reference to that old photo of him before his business days#the entire middle column is a brief glimpse into all the good intent that got soured along the way#while the right column represents his success and splendor#alternatively the bear and the camera could reference that one scene in hbcib with pipsqueak!#and that last one is for the extravagance of the ball!#you could say it being next to the camera means he’ll be keeping a close eye on partygoers >:3#i actually steered clear of stuff like sewing and other such manual work to show how he stands at the very top#arghh i could go on about every little part of the layout and how the different themes connect and oppose each other it's so fun!!!!! :D#anyways i hope ya like it ouo!!!#biggerler#ask the biggering onceler#stimboard#my nonsense

Starting a new sewing project! I always forget that I can just. Make things. Like I took classes and practiced sewing for many years. I have the skills. My bedroom needs curtains and I'm so picky about my room decor and all the ones I'm finding are ugly or expensive, so after christmas I'm going to stop being lazy and go to the fabric store and actually make them
#curtains are like the easiest thing to make#but i have a specific image in mind of the exact shape & size & color & design i want the curtains to be#and none of the curtains online meet my ridiculously specific criteria#hmmm maybe i should also make myself a purse/tote#i need a tote bag with a velcro or zipper closing for day to day stuff#but again. i have a specific image in my brain of exactly how i want it to look#and etsy isnt cutting it#i also need a hanging wall organizer#i'm gonna have soooooo much fun when i go to the fabric store after i get paid#i love the fabric store

it's month 7 of pants research and this is the scene of the latest fashion cryptid sighting unsuspecting civilians were subjected to at the local charity shop this morning
#pants#fashion#men's fashion#cryptid#cryptidcore#da me#((the shop doesn't have a fitting room so I was measuring with my measuring tape instead to make sure it was the correct fit))#I bought FOUR pairs of pants for under 20 quid TOTAL!#(and two huge bed sheets worth of fabric for less than 10 cause this specific charity shop is my fave cause they got curtains & bed sheets)#and then 3 more at tkmaxx that did cost about 20-25 each but apparently that was like 50 quid less than rrp#and all 7 of them fit appropriately in the hip/crotch area and I'll only need to shorten the legs 🙏#cause I finally figured out what measurement to fit men's pants for the other week#cause unlike women's fashion which just fits to existing body shapes (eg waist for pant waist crotch for pant crotch etc)#men's fashion ignores basically all existing body shapes which makes it so much harder in so many ways#for someone this short I sure am crouching in public surprisingly often
