Day in Fandom History: October 3…
First Day of School for the new kid, Zack Underwood, and already befriending Milo Murphy, his first day might be an interesting one, and must find a shortcut to make it to school on time as Milo's friend Melissa wagers on that bet to her classmates. The first episode of Milo Murphy’s Law, “Going the Extra Milo”, premiered on this day, 8 Years Ago.

im happy my post is garnering discussion but honestly i wasnt around for 2018-2021 fandom on tumblr and i was mainly talking about how its kind of silly to get mad at people for portraying colonizer countries as mean, or calling it demonization and stuff. like its okay not to like personally portraying ur fav characters as mean or part of the state, but getting irritated at the fact that it exists or is popular imo kind of misses the fact that this… is the state and nation personification fandom. and its hard to say its not canon when canon did once portray the characters in uniform and at times involved in their state activities… like the early strips discussing western imperialism in china is literally ‘china being bullied by the allies’ ‘france wanting to grope china’ ‘china being treated like a maid’ etc etc like they were very much. the state LOL also china and japan’s canon relationship, as much as I have my issues with it, has an entire thing about china being stabbed by japan… i do feel like hetalia started out as a history nerd’s history exploration that blended humour with ‘what i find cute’ with satire etc etc, which inevitably involves illustrating the personifications as vessels of state and culture, and although the modern strips have deviated quite a bit… well, different people will approach this series for different reasons, right? Whether its serious or comedic content showing the characters as mean or imperialist or unpleasant, it’s not something that deviates too far from canon (if we take all canon eras into consideration) nor is it surprising given how history laden the topic is.
#diary#hetalia#hater tag#also have some issues with some things being called drama…#like i know some of u think of me and some others as drama stirring little devils#honestly i dont enjoy drama that much but ill become upset when i see things that i see as racist or insensitive…#because im of the opinion that this fandom requires extra sensitivity given the subject matter.#let people have fun#but#also be careful yk? i guess for me personally im always trying to be careful#when im out of my depth i try to talk to ppl with better understanding while doing my own research#and if ive written or expressed antyhing bad (which i certainly have even on this blog many times before)#i try to change my stances with new info… and like#this is important to me and its important for me to read ppls thoughts bc.#i know what its like to be treated racistly and dismissed. or to have things and history precious to me twisted#but anyways rambling aside… i guess what i want to say is i understand it seems annoying but#if you post something insensitive… and someone gets upset… then thats just how it is. hetalia is sensitive#again ive definitely posted bad insensitive things. ive been told im acting out of line.#and it sucks. but… sometimes you have to understand ur own irritation doesnt outweigh the hurt#and listen a little#sometimes i like things that i then find are insensitive or cruel. and id rather not engage with it than dismiss peoples hurt… or something#honestly i keep most of my whining private i promise JLKFHDJGLKFH BC FOR THE MOST PART I THINK I CAN TELL THE DIFF BETWEEN#when i have a real issue and when im just nitpicking#so i keep my more petty whining or basic stuff private#but if i see something egregious then i dont want to be quiet#and if a friend of mine (esp if theyre a kid) is upset or hurt by racism I dont want to be quiet

one of my controversial visual novel takes is i actually unironically enjoy the parts in higurashi where ryukishi07 just hijacks keiichi to rant at the audience directly about some anachronistic insanely granular otaku shit for ten minutes
i like the reminder that at its core this was just a fun story being written by an unhinged horny nerd and his friends and if he wanted to suddenly pause the story to go on a monologue about the effects of the awkward transition from 2d to 3d graphics in the early 2000s on moe culture he could just do that because he wasn't beholden to any corporate oversight that would stop him (and then he could turn around and just as easily write detailed exposition about simmering ethnofascism in the japanese right wing government in the aftermath of their war crimes in ww2 because there was no corporate oversight to stop him from doing that either)
the fact that these games that have created this whole multimedia franchise and prestige anime and gacha and everything started out as these incredibly idiosyncratic little doujin projects written by Some Guy who will stop to tell you in detail why everyone is wrong and his favorite character is Best Girl makes these scenes that are just so unconcerned with tone or "professionalism" very charming to me and i think also speak to why the actual plot is able to be as starkly honest and affecting as it is

I love how Stark stans claim that the whole Children of the Forest (a brown-skinned indigenous race) somehow didn’t count as settler colonialism and genocide because they weren’t human. Like ??? As if fantasy writers haven’t been using fantasy races in their racism allegories for decades. Besides, so what if they weren’t human ?Clearly, they were sentient beings with complex thought processes, complex underground structures and a way of life, had a religion and places of worship (the Old Gods and the weirwood trees), not to mention a language to communicate so they were civilised enough to engage in a war with the First Men, are able to speak and understand the Common Tongue, and wiping them out is still terrible regardless of their relation to humanity (or lack of thereof).
And Leaf herself debunk the idea that COTF are trees and squirrels, and GRRM calls her a “little woman”: “The First Men named us children,” the little woman said. “The giants called us woh dak nag gran, the squirrel people, because we were small and quick and fond of trees, but we are no squirrels, no children. Our name in the True Tongue means those who sing the song of earth. Before your Old Tongue was ever spoken, we had sung our songs ten thousand years.” — ADWD, Bran II
The thing about this fandom is that they view the Starks as having a divine right to the North in a way that no other family has to their lands. So even though they'll insist that Dany has no right to the Iron Throne because her family was usurped, the Starks deserve to reclaim the North because it was "stolen" from them. If the COTF weren't physically there in the story I could slightly understand (not that I would agree) people ignoring that aspect of the Stark's history, but they are fully realized and present. Apparently, them being supernatural is enough for people to ignore the Starks being colonizers when, like you said, racism allegories exist. And I can guarantee that the reaction wouldn't be the same if it was the Targaryens who were responsible for eradicating them. Instead, we get people headcanoning the Starks as indigenous (of course only the ugly/feral ones) which is just even more offensive. This is why it's so annoying that discussions on racism have been turned into just another fandom argument, like who deserves the throne. People's opinions on it are influenced by what characters they like instead of being objective on the subject.

I'm forcefully removing these historical characters from your grasp until you learn to distinguish fictional representations of historical figures in a television show from the real historical figures.

you reblogged my post about asks, so i am here to send you an ask!
i am currently watching star trek tos, and it is the Best television series To Me
you should watch it if you haven't!
Hello hello!!
I've only watch a smidgen of Star Trek here and there, a little smattering with my grandfather. But he liked Anything scifi!
Our family definitely leaned more towards Star Wars, but it's all fun at the end of the day, absolutely
The stuff I find most interesting about Star Trek, from outside looking in, is the impact it's fandom has had on basically, imo, being such a huge part of how modern fandom has developed, honestly! At least, you hear a lot of old stories about how there were fanfic writing groups and mailing lists, zines, the cosplays, etcetc
Sure, there Are older fandoms, like the folks who loved the Sherlock book series, or shows like The Twilight Zone, I Love Lucy, The Addams Family. But those all just didn't have any of the same traction as Star Trek, back then. Maybe one day I'd give the show (or one of the shows) a proper try again. Regardless, lots of respect for the folks who've kept the adoration for that fandom going strong to this day! 🔥🔥🔥

For more information, I recommend diving into the Fanlore pages for Fandom and Profit, and for "Where has Anne Rice fanfiction gone?". They will probably give an overall idea of why fans are so strict on the no monetization rule. And yes, Anne Rice did very much stalk, harass, and even sue fans writing fic about IWTV. If memory serves, she softened and eased off on the matter as she got older, but the fact remains that she (and other authors) caused a lot of damage and were single-handedly responsible for all the disclaimers to the tune of "I don't own anything, please don't sue me" and "Characters and setting belong to [author(s)], I'm just playing here" and such.
For the love of all that you enjoy: DON’T PAYWALL YOUR FANFICTION.
Again, but louder:
DON’T PAYWALL YOUR FANFICTION
It’s getting more and more common. I’ve seen three posts about it in the last 24 hours - patreons where you’ll get “exclusive” fanfiction stories if you’re a subscriber.
Don’t.
Don’t do it.
It’s annoying, but mostly it’s fucking dangerous.
The whole fanfiction community prosper on someone else’s turf under “fair use” laws. In simple terms: we can play with other people’s creations for as long as it’s done for our own amusement, and that of our followers.
Once any kind of financial benefits are made, it becomes another abuse of someone else’s rights.
And look, I get it. It sucks, especially seeing the artists take commissions while the authors get nothing, and it takes hours and hours of our time, and I understand people are looking for a side hustle to make ends meet in this monstrosity of a capitalist society, but if we don’t stop it from happening, the rights owners will stop it.
And they’ll stop it for everyone.
It’s not worth it. Don’t do it.

au where instead of dying airplane finishes pidw and then starts releasing increasingly insane extras catering to every kink and ship he can think of. bingge gets pissed on by a wife. xin mo ends up in someone’s ass. he writes the official a/b/o au. he’s having so much fun writing unhinged shit that his writing actually /improves/. peerless cucumber still complains about the plot (airplane please tell me sqq and lqg didn’t fuck in the ling xi caves that’s not canon right? right??) but even he admits the prose is nothing to scoff at.
once airplane has exhausted the pidm universe he just takes mobei jun out of it and has his oc fuck or be fucked by everything he can think of. bingge? already covered in the pidm extras, but he throws it in few more mobing fics for good luck. a thinly veiled airplane self insert? naturally! every single peak lord? why not? the concept of the demon realm, anthropomorphised and in need of a good dicking down? airplane's pretty proud of that one.
eventually he just becomes the chuck tingle of web novels. he’s equal parts hated and admired. some of his fans have left but a lot stay on (including cucumber-bro, of course) and he gains new fans who haven’t even read pidw and are just here for the insane porn concepts! he’s having so much fun! nobody cares how gay it’s all gotten!
it’s quick to write and it pays his bills so well he’s able to actually work on a new novel in secret. he publishes it under a different name. it has kickass world building, a tender gay romance and tasteful, well-thought out sex scenes. nobody figures out it’s written by airplane shooting towards the sky. not even cucumber-bro - not at first. he leaves a very heartfelt review, expressing his delight at finding something well written with a great protagonist and fascinating monsters that doesnt become a disgusting tropey mess like ANOTHER web novel he could mention!! and then there’s another message tacked on, shyly admitting that the romance has helped him come to terms with his own sexuality. airplane is equal parts genuinely touched and cackling with trollish glee. he HAS to reveal his identity. the resulting meltdown goes down in fandom history. airplane gets a best friend and ( maybe?? ) a boyfriend out of it.
he never stops writing the mobei jun porn.

i don't participate in any sort of svsss fandom stuff so my apologies if this has been said already but a HUGE part of the humor of that book comes from how it parodies typical isekai harem tropes and not just in the way you might think. there's the typical "wow so cheaply derived porn trope" humor but part of the humor is also in that despite LBH being the original protag, the book SVSSS itself features SQQ as the protagonist.....
ppl like to joke about SQQ's "harem" but the humor of the harem isn't just in that he has one at all (when normally that would be LBH's role), it's how every "member" of that harem fulfills a typical isekai harem role in an inverted way!!!!!!
most obvious example is LBH. he's an inversion in that he's originally intended to be an all-powerful demon king who's a housewife in SVSSS, but (imo) the humor in his "role" is that he's supposed to fulfill the trope of the young abused battle-hardened "demon" girl who longs for peace and housewifery and latches onto the older man who showed him kindness -- except instead of being a moe anime girl, he's an all-powerful protagonist-style power insert hero. so, not so much an inversion of "this demon king is actually a housewife??" and moreso "this housewife is actually a male demon king" (which might not sound like much of a difference at all, but it's moreso about how the MEN fulfill harem girl tropes and not the other way around.)
another example is YGY - set up as a "big brother" figure and clearly has history with SQQ. he's meant to fulfill the trope of the clingy "older sister" childhood friend who promises marriage to the protagonist and has clear history w/him but is insecure about his role because he's not as "appealing" as the other options. his humor as a "romance option" comes from 1. him being a man (you might notice this is the case for a lot of these LOL) and 2. actually, in fact, being immensely powerful - it's another inversion of the trope of the physically weak "starter" harem girl who agonizes over being unable to do more for her beloved childhood friend in their journey.
my favorite example: LQG is the most obvious "tsundere tomboy" trope ever. physically powerful, out of touch with her emotions, gets flustered and aggressive with her crush, focuses on getting stronger above all else yet somehow extraordinarily beautiful -- all of these are extremely obvious tropes assigned to this "tsundere tomboy" trope, with the humor lying in the contrast of LQG actually being a man. the succubus extra is hilarious not just because of the awkward situation and their reactions, but because it's an EXACT setup of an extremely common scene in isekai harem novels. the cold tsundere beauty gets affected by succubi, doesn't know what to do, goes to the protagonist for help - it's the exact kind of situation that would have the protagonist pushing her down and saying lines like "you shouldn't act like this - i'm a man too, don't you know?" and making her aware that she's a woman and "in danger" around him. it's funny because LQG is very much a man, and indeed SVSSS parodies this directly by having SQQ tell LQG that he's a man too, he'll understand if he needs to jerk off! no worries!
even ZZL falls into the trope of the typical beast-kin girl who's saved by the protagonist and falls into his harem, subverted by his loyalty to someone ELSE besides SQQ and nonchalance as he does it.
it's the main draw of the humor of the novel for me and i surprisingly feel like not enough people talk about just how much SVSSS really leans into being a parody of a harem-collecting isekai....
and if you're curious about my credentials for making this post: if you name a shitty isekai novel, i've almost definitely already read it all. i read too many midsekais. it's like an addiction.
