…so I’ve made some connections
(spoilers for all of TMA and TMAGP (as of Episode 15))
Lady Mowbray seems to have a lot of visual similarities to depictions of Scylla from Greek mythos. A woman of violent power with hounds at her hips and a taste for human flesh. The resemblance is uncanny, even with the added flavor of her being a capital-L Lady.
It’s interesting to me to see how the “fear powers” we’ve been introduced to so far in Protocol’s universe seem to have connections with Odyssey antagonists.
- Lady Mowbray aligns with Scylla
- The Sea (the Vast/Buried amalgamation from Ep. 11) aligns with Poseidon/the ocean (or possibly the Sirens)
- Mr. Bonzo aligns with Polyphemus
- The tree from Ep. 3 and the snakes from Ep. 14 align with Circe
- Needles seems to align well with Charybdis
- The starving crowd from Ep. 8 aligns with the Lotus Eaters (or possibly the Sirens)
Heck, even the Man on the Screen from Ep. 5 could align with the Oracle and the traveling merchant (responsible for the violin in Ep. 4 and (probably) the dice in Ep. 9) could align with Hermes (though I would hesitate to call either the Oracle or Hermes antagonists). Which leaves Ink5oul, the volunteers in Ep. 7, and the gambling app from Ep. 13 without any solid equivalents.
To be fair, I think basing all of TMAGP’s antagonists on a single epic may be too small-scale and isn’t enough for a solid theory, but the connections are interesting to dissect 👀

Chainsaw Man is one of my favorite stories because it never shies away from the hard questions. How do you form meaningful relationships after sexual trauma? How do you escape the cycle of abuse when it becomes more comfortable to you than "normal" life? How are the bonds you forge and the family you build stronger than what you were born into? And now, its newest philosophical quandary, just how cursed would elephants look if the concept and existence of ears were erased from the world!

it drives me fucking crazy that Dean gets an entire fucking monologue about being possessed by Michael but Sam, a character who has been possessed by at least THREE different beings, one of which he was tricked into by someone he trusts, and one of which was the devil himself, gets one fucking line at the end of s9 that isn’t even about the experience itself but rather a cursory mention of the psychological fallout of his body being used to murder Kevin in a season that otherwise seems to disregard his experience entirely.

Queer Reads: Eliot Grayson
For rec 15, we have more werewolves! And also a very salty were-bobcat.
Tumblr media
First off, I love Eliot Grayson. Seriously. I have devoured everything she’s written, and she’s written a lot. Featured in the little graphic are the Mismatched Mates books, of which there are 10 total books. The first three follow the Armitage Pack, then we get vampires (First Blood), and werewolf academics (The Werewolf Experiment), and then we get into darker waters, following some characters who have escaped from a lab run by evil warlocks doing nasty magical experiments on people (Lost and Bound and Lost Touch). And then we finish up with two very different brothers from the Castelli pack, with another vampire book thrown in there.
I should say, these books deal with alpha weres, the most common of which are alpha werewolves, but this is not omegaverse. There's no mpreg, and no omegas in these books, though there is lots of knotting, and if you need to google that, uh, I'd recommend you don't.
Grayson is currently working on another series, The Twilight Mages, set in a fantasy world where magic is a gift from the gods, unless you’re born at dawn or dusk, when the magic is far more of a curse than a gift. I read a review about these books that called them indescribably horny, and that’s very accurate. There is a plot, but it is 100% centered around banging. Luckily, all this horniness is surrounded by feisty characters, laugh-out-loud banter, and spicy chemistry resulting in well-earned HEAs.
Grayson’s writing has been described as having too much graphic sex, so if you like your romantasy to be heavier on the plot than the porn, Grayson is probably not for you. But if you like any excuse for sex as a plot device, check her out.

Finally gotten around to watching The Magnus Protocol ep 9. A week late but yeah. Spoilers and gambling under the cut
"Wait... cursed dice? That gives you good things and bad? This isn't the gambling Web statement I've thought would've been a great concept is it?"
"-the thing is though I don't really know if they ever made me roll them"
"HOLY FUCK IT IS"
Yall don't know how much I've been thinking of a gambling thing for the Web. Well not brainrot levels but I did think it would be cool. The Web in TMA was the super plot relevant mastermind so while it is my favourite entity it also felt a lot less real than other entities. Iirc the only non-directly plot relevant Web statements that touched on addiction was TMA 172, and while I love domain statements I wish it had regular ones too.
Here we finally have a statement/case that touches on the loss of control without it directly being a case of "creepy spider monster/avatar did this to you". It was completely the statement giver's own relinquishment to the luck of the dice, and stealing the luck of others, and there's nothing worse than losing control to your own decisions. Though I do get that writing that would be tricky while being sensitive, even here its more about losing yourself to power and stealing control from others than just gambling addiction turned up to 11 with supernatural elements. Also yeah there are literally no web motifs in this but its Web in essence and that's what matters, even if the powers are different here.
...
"-they're not random it all balances out"
My sibling in the Ceaseless Watcher all random things balance out, I didn't come home from back to back tests about statistics to hear this

@beatingheart-bride
"Oh, I think you would be!" Susannah encouraged sweetly, reaching out to take his hands in hers as she continued, "You're already a wonderful dancer, Philippe, and I'd love to see you...follow your passion too, once we get to California! I think you would amaze anyone who saw you dancing...you certainly amaze me."
Was Philippe self-taught when it came to dancing? Certainly. Was that a ding against him? Not in her eyes: He was a marvelously elegant dancer, that she could attest to over and over again, and she imagined anyone who saw him in action would agree. In fact, they might be deeply impressed to know he was self-taught, and not taught formally-he certainly looked as if he had taken lessons for years when he was on the dance floor.
"Who knows?" she ventured to suggest with a chuckle, as their waiter came along with a small bowl of bread and butter as an appetizer. "If you do...maybe someday I'll be costuming you too!"
She couldn't help but get excited at the prospect of making her beloved a costume: Although she'd technically already made him something (that hat that had, she realized, brought them together in the first place), it made her grin, made her heart flutter as she imagined making him an elegant, lavish suit to wear on the stage-something romantic and regal, like the noble prince of Fair, Brown, and Trembling...
