If this website was majorly French-speaking instead of English-speaking, Jacques Brel would have a grip on the Tumblr userbase that not even Hozier could rival.

My sense of what Crossovers are for, conceptually, the thing they do that other works can't, was entirely formulated by my early-childhood exposure to Kurt Busiek and George Perez's seminal 2004 Marvel/DC crossover JLA/Avengers. Like most stuff Busiek writes it's a love-letter, and part-and-parcel with its status as a love-letter was that he took the time to render the horror and bewilderment that the respective teams had upon encountering the status-quo of their counterpart's setting. The JLA encounter the anti-mutant hysteria, the supervillainous fiefdoms like Latveria, figures like Hulk and Punisher being allowed to roam free, all those tonal hallmarks of Marvel, and they come to the conclusion that the Marvel Universe is hanging on by its fingernails and that the Avengers are somewhere between in over their heads and actively negligent. Meanwhile the Avengers explore the shiny, forward-thinking, optimistic DC universe, encounter the ubiquitously positive reactions they get from people on the street just for visibly Being Superheroes, see things like the Flash Museum and the Hall of Justice, and Captain America comes to the conclusion that the Justice League obviously must have led a fascist takeover of America. Then they hit each other a lot. Anyway, if you're writing a crossover between two works and you want me to care at all, you need to meet the JLA/Avengers Bar. When a character from one work is placed in the context of another work's setting, what commentary on the original work is that character in a position to provide through their outlook and worldview? What insight, in turn, can their commentary provide on on the assumptions and conventions of their native narrative? Have all characters involved experienced enough of the events of their own work that they've actually got something to compare and contrast with, or is the crossover occurring so early in one or more of their respective timelines that you're basically dealing with OCs due to the butterfly effect? Are you actually acknowledging the different properties as discrete narratives that are abrading each other in interesting ways, or are you for the one millionth time reimagining Izuku Midoriya as a native resident of some other setting (seemingly decided via roulette wheel?) And of course, are you correct in your assessments of how these are bouncing off each other? How many times am I getting hit with "They would not fucking say that/react like that/understand their new surroundings in that way/go five minutes without trying to disembowel this fan-favorite character from the other work that you've decided they're getting along great with?"
#this is a wormpost in spirit but I'm not naming names#Also I don't want to imply that the ONLY way to do a crossover that meets this bar is to have like a literal portal open#there are definitely setting quote-unquote fusions I've encountered that take the tack that the events of both properties happened#because the settings of each are compatible in interesting ways to begin with and that's clearly the exigence for the crossover#but yeah#post-gm Taylor is in a really good position to take advantage of the JLA/Avengers dynamic#which is great when it goes well and phenomenally annoying when they whiff it#thoughts#meta

Oh I'm so interested! Thank you! Could you share your preparations to write a fic? Maybe you could give a piece of advice or smth if it's possible
omg it's my pleasure! truly appreciate your interest on the matter :')
and of course, thanks so much for asking! i have a quite methodical writing process that works for me, but i think the following tips can help other writers to extract and adapt some information to their own process! here's what i do:
our ideas just emerge from nowhere. whether it's during a shower, or before we fall asleep, or during a dental procedure (yes... this happened to me once), it's crucial to try to keep them fresh in our thoughts until we have time to annotate them. that's why, besides a phone with a fairly accessible notes app, i carry a small moleskin with me, because when these sudden new ideas surge into your mind, if you don't annotate them somewhere, they'll surely escape and you'll end up hating yourself for not having “saved” them, that's for sure. imo the human brain could be comparable to an operational system: if we don't save our files (ideas), they'll be lost perpetually (unless you can hack your own kernel but that's another story);
research!!!! this is perhaps my most preferred tip: consistent research prior to the beginning of your structured writing is essential. not only will it provide valuable information that will turn your project into an almost-perfectly vivid piece of work, but more research can spark more ideas. my advice is to do consistent research on the topic before AND during the writing process, as there will always be a chance of stumbling upon a piece of information regarding the topic you're writing about that you were not aware of;
i try not to “only write when i'm inspired”. as soon as i gather my ideas into something discernible in my notes app and/or my moleskin, i transfer them to a google docs file and start structuring the story according to the theme/type. currently, i have two academic jobs and i'm doing a second degree lol so even if i only have the time/energy/will to write like, 30 minutes a day, that's more than enough! just don't go too long without writing anything;
this is something i learned with academic writing: i do not start writing the story... in the introduction(?). i mean, i don't create the introduction first - i prefer to build a particular scene first (be it a scene that will be part of the fifth paragraph, or even the last scene), and then structure the story around it. it's an odd method and not always advisable, but it's a tool that helps me write and rewrite (∞ times) chunks of text throughout the process;
i must stop so as not to elongate myself but here are two tools that help me to write when i'm "stuck" on a sentence or a paragraph, and also for revising and proofreading drafts and/or the final work: one look, which is a guide and thesaurus that scans over a thousand dictionaries and helps a lot with synonyms, antonyms, figurative language, and so on; and the thesaurus dot com itself. lately it's been really difficult to access quality tools that do not make use of AI, but the few that don't are just excellent (i'm very fond of one look tbh).
hope these tips are not too confusing to understand or too superficial haha, if you have further questions feel free to send me another message!
#anonymous#asks#writing#writing tips#so sorry for taking too long to answer my exigent ass was trying to turn a piece of advice into a crash course lol
