The Kray Twins
@erodedauthenticity
Twins.
Since the beginning of time that title alone had brought an attraction unto itself. The 1960s were no different, except they were different. Simply entitled, as anything else in their life had been before their name and it’s royalties had filled it out.
Their story of humble East End beginnings, had always been destined to extraordinary things and notorious novelty. Embellished in history; Imprinted on London.
What once had started as local business, was now a reigning cast of Legend.
 – born again to a crown into a world he’s never known; but knew him very well indeed.  And had been expecting him.
Warmth filled his starkly stiff ‘boning’. What had started in his fingertips moved throughout him like a balm of some temperate glow. Slowly his finger moved with the pulse that had begun to pixelate there, giving way to a growing lightness that filled him. His eye twitched as this rich illumination began to feed more to his being. Feeling materialised.
Red velvet cast slowly, beyond his veiled tempered reveal of it. And beyond that glass. Life filled him, but there was a foreboding emptiness as well. Immediately his brow weighed …letting go of breath and a soft grunt as more of the scene came from it’s blur and clarity. Confusion. It hit him in a frenzy all at once that’d made him loose what he’d had of himself over the stationary leg of something, scrambling down to the rug… which was soft against his palms. Bringing one up, he looked at the feeling still residual against it, before the knitted disorientation he wore turned it over examining his knuckles and then again at the glasses walls that surrounded him, cloaked entirely in crimson. Apart from that he knew this place. This living area. There was something very familiar about it that comforted him. But at the same time, there was also something very wrong and not right about it as well.
His blue gray wonderment panned all round him, while his slicked head turned to everything, full swivel where he was still sat on the carpet. Bit childlike. Cept there was nothing fun and games about this….whatever it was. The more he was the more aware of it he became. That feeling of a nagging emptiness within himself. The undone. The more he noticed of everything. The more incomplete it all became to him. And then a piece. Dusting off his hands, he moved himself over to a plaque of bronze that had caught his eye in front of him, and positioned himself round it in front of the glass walls; he pressed the window in examination on the way before his head turned again down to his right to take a proper look.
 “The Kray Twins”
 Reginald and Ronald Kray
Enjoying Afternoon Tea at 178 Vallance Road.
Tumblr media
178....Vallance Road.
Uncertainty still buried his brow line ahead of a new cock to it, as azure gaze lifted delayed to the new perspective of what he’d just read in front of him. An’ up turned tea cup on the floor with the cigarette next to it that he’d not remembered holding. And the gold leafed, hand painted beaker and carrot cake meant for someone else in that voided space apart of his own that he was born again without him in so unnaturally. “Ron?......
.......where’s Ron!?”
Purpose flooded his body. He was his inadequacy and frailty, and with that surge of recognition, came the next hurled from a near by wooden side table against the glass house he was in alone.

It’s not the cliche you think it is.

(Hopefully by this point you’ve finished all 117 minutes of ‘Mona Lisa Smile’, the kind of person who isn’t bothered by spoilers, or are just deciding if you still want to keep watching.)

I think I need to be constantly reminded that a part of me knows that Julia Roberts is very wise in the films she does. The examples I use would be  ‘Ben Is Back’ and ‘Notting Hill’.
The posters of the film don’t do it justice. Just like ‘Take Care’ and ‘Jane Wants a Boyfriend‘....it comes across as either something underdeveloped or something that The Hallmark Channel is looking to add to their catalogue.
What I was surprised though...is during this rewatch...I found myself able to look at paintings in a different way. Even if I had been one of those who might pop in for a Pollock exhhibit....I found myself delighted that I now know the name of the painting (Number 1) Katherine showed to her class
--------
HIGHLIGHT:
INT. LECTURE HALL - DAY
INSERT: A slide of Carcass.
The students fumble with their books. Confused.
BETTY What is that?
KATHERINE You tell me.
CONNIE stares at it. Giving herself time to absorb the new piece.
KATHERINE Carcass. by Soutine. 1925.
Her eyes roam across the room. The nervousness of the previous class diminished. Almost. A flicker of hesitation but she covers it.
STUDENT It's not on the syllabus.
KATHERINE No, it's not.
She eyes them again.
KATHERINE Is it any good?
Silence. Some students turn to their seatmates for answers.
KATHERINE Hmm?
She walks up the stars towards the projector.
KATHERINE Come on, ladies. There's no wrong answer. There's also no textbook telling you what to think.
She gets to the top and faces them.
KATHERINE It's not that easy is it?
She takes a seat on the steps.
BETTY All right. No. It's not good. In fact, I wouldn't even call it art. It's grotesque.
CONNIE studies the projected image.
CONNIE Is there a rule against art being grotesque?
She turns to BETTY
GISELLE I think there's something aggressive about it, and erotic.
BETTY To you, everything is erotic.
GISELLE Yeah. Everything is erotic.
KATHERINE Girls.
STUDENT Aren't there standards?
BETTY Of course there are! Otherwise a tacky velvet painting could be equated to a Rembrandt.
CONNIE (to KATHERINE) Hey, my Uncle Ferdie has two tacky velvet paintings. He loves those clowns.
BETTY There are standards, technique, composition, color, even subject. So if you're suggesting that rotted side of meat is art --- much less good art. Then what are we going to learn?
KATHERINE (to Betty) Just that. You have outlined our new syllabus, Betty. Thank you. (to the class) What is art? What makes it good or bad? And who decides?
She looks ahead.
KATHERINE Next slide, please.
INSERT: A projected drawing of a cow. Based on the initial slide, there's no telling who made this...or when.
KATHERINE Twenty give years ago, someone thought this was brilliant.
CONNIE nods.
CONNIE I can see that.
BETTY Who?
KATHERINE My mother. I painted it for her birthday.
Laughter all around.
KATHERINE Next slide.
INSERT: A black and white photo of a woman in her early 20's.
KATHERINE This is my mom. Is it art?
STUDENT It's a snapshot.
KATHERINE If I told you Ansel Adams had taken it, would that make a difference?
BETTY shakes her head and scoffs.
BETTY Art isn't art until someone says it is.
KATHERINE It's art!
BETTY (gentler) The right people.
KATHERINE Who are they?
GISELLE Betty Warren! We're lucky we have one of them right here.
BETTY Screw you.
The class titters.
KATHERINE Could you go back to the Soutine, please?
INSERT: Carcass is back.
KATHERINE Just look at it again.
She starts walking towards the front of the room.
KATHERINE Look beyond the paint. Let us try to open our minds to a new idea. Hmm?
Silence as each student considers the piece once again.
--------
My verdict of the film: 6/10

Exhibition - Leaflet Example
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is a leaflet I picked up from my visit to the exhhibition. I like the front cover and the two pages as you open it. The cover works with the design system, it is similar to the flag on the outside and on the adverts that I’ve seen.
The text on the left hand page is really clever, at first I thought they just highlighted words that were key, but I have just realised that they spell out the title of the exhibition.
