He was but a nobody...

But he was just “one of the young men”—one of a vast company who, as per George Eliot, “lived faithfully … hidden [lives], and rest in unvisited tombs.”

So much of the story of the Bible, particularly the narrative of the Old Testament, is filled with these characters, male and female: “And there was a young man, and a young man here, and a young woman there.” Wonderful! Should be a great encouragement to us. And there was a young lady, caught up in a Syrian raid, taken off into exile, into servitude in the home of Naaman, who got swallowed up by leprosy, remember. And who was it that was bold enough to suggest to her mistress, Naaman’s wife, that her master Naaman should go and see Elisha? It was this young girl, whose name we do not have. The vast majority of us will not even be a footnote in history. If we think that Samuel’s obituary was short, wait till it’s ours, unless inflated by ego.

Depictions of banal daily struggles and the social and physical deprivation of the masses intertwine the artwork of Syrian painter Louay Kayyali during his prolific yet short-lived career. The Aleppo-born artist began painting at the age of 11 and held his first solo show at 18. Highlighting the individual struggles evident on the fringe of larger socio-political realities in the Arab region, Kayyali’s artwork provides a window into the lives of the deprived majority. His signature technique of painting on masonite chipboard contributed to the worn-yet-resolute nature of his solidly defined figures, often rendered with quiet, downcast gazes. Woman Sewing captures a fleeting moment of a seamstress’ ascetic routine of stitching clothing. Kayyali, who secured a scholarship in 1956 to study at Rome’s Academy of Fine Arts, participated in a range of fairs during his time in Italy, including representing Syria along with Fateh Moudarres at the 1960 Venice Biennale. After the Arab defeat in the Six-Day War with Israel in 1967, Kayyali sank into a deep depression and destroyed a series of politically charged charcoal drawings that epitomised the Arab struggle. Suffering from psychological distress and addiction through his 30s, Kayyali stopped painting until the early 1970s. The artist died tragically in a fire at the age of 44 in what some have deemed a suicide

تنطوي المسيرة الفنيّة القصيرة ��لفنان التشكيلي السوري لؤي كيالي -المولود بمدينة حلب - على مجموعة من الأعمال التي تتداخل فيها صور الصراعات اليومية ومواضيع الحرمان الاجتماعي والمادي لعامة الناس. وظهرت ميول كيالي الفنية في سن الحادية عشرة، وأقام باكورة معارضه الفرديّة في سن الثامنة عشرة. وتسلط أعماله الضوء على أشكال النضال الفردي في ظل الوقائع السياسيّة والاجتماعيّة للمنطقة العربية، حيث تفتح أعماله نافذة على حياة الأغلبية المحرومة في المجتمع. وساهمت تقنية كيّالي الخاصة في الرسم على ألواح الخشب الرقيقة في إبراز جوانب الضعف والعزيمة التي تتمتع بها شخصياته ذات الملامح القوية والنظرات الهادئة والكئيبة. ويصوّر كيالي في لوحته "الخياطة" لحظة عابرة من الحياة الروتينية الصارمة لخيّاطة تقوم بحياكة الملابس. وكان كيالي قد حاز على منحة لدراسة الفن في "أكاديمية روما للفنون الجميلة" عام ١٩٥٦؛ وشارك في مجموعة من المعارض الفنية خلال فترة إقامته في إيطاليا، فضلاً عن تمثيل بلاده في "بينالي فينيسيا" عام ١٩٦٠ إلى جانب الفنان التشكيلي فاتح المدرّس. وبعد هزيمة العرب أمام إسرائيل في حرب عام ١٩٦٧، غرق الكيالي في كآبة عميقة دمّر على إثرها سلسلة من رسومات الفحم التي صوّرت واقع الصراع العربي الإسرائيلي، كما عانى في الثلاثينيات من عمره من الضغوط النفسيّة والإدمان ليعتزل الرسم حتى أوائل السبعينيات. وقضى لؤي كيالي نحبه بطريقة مأساوية في الـ ٤٤ من عمره إثر حريق شب بمرسمه في حادثة توقع البعض أن تكون انتحاراً.
