THE MARBLE CAVE OF MISSOURI
A very large protion of the State of Missouri is honeycombed by caverns to such an extent that the underground drainage in many places deprives the surface of small streams. For many years, the existence of a large cave in the extreme southeastern portion of Stone County, Mo., has been known, but the inaccessibility of the locality has kept travelers, with but few exceptions, from attempting to visit it. Within the past year, however, such remarkable accounts of the wonders and extent of the cavern have appeared in the local and metropolitan newspapers that the Missouri World’s Fair Commission and the State Geological Survey determined to investigate the cave thoroughly and see what there was of truth in the stories which had been so widely circulated. Consequently, our party of three, representing both organizations, besides our photographer, Mr. C. E. DeGroff, of Warrensburg, Mo., left Aurora, a live mining city of Lawrence County, about 270 miles southwest of St. Louis, on the “Frisco” road, one charming day last fall, to explore the new wonder of the world. The 40 mile drive over cultivated prairies and through fine open but almost uninhabited forests might be dilated upon, but the limits of our space compel us to hasten on to the description of the object on our journey. Stone County lies for the most part on the southern slope of the so-called Ozark Mountains. Three mountains, however, are merely hills and ridges which have been formed by the erosion of the plateau which is known by geologists as the “Ozark Uplift” and would (continued on page 70.) [transcription continues after images]

(Continued from first page.) not to be called such by one familliar with the Alleghanies, the White Mountains, or even the Catskills. No railroad has yet touched the county, the forests of oak, with sycamore, elm, and walnut in the valleys, are for the most part in their primeval condition, and thousands of acres of fertile land may still be taken up under the U. S. homestead laws. The forests are free from underbrush and much grass grows under the trees, giving the scenery a park-like aspect.
Mr. Truman S. Powell’s claim occupies Echo Glade and the neighboring hills about a mile and a half from the mouth of the cave and about 300 feet below it, and is the best headquarters from which to visit the cavern. Mr. Powell is the editor of the Stone County Oracle, published at the county seat, Galena, 18 miles from his farm. He says that he has explored fifty caves in Stone County. He is a firm believer in the future of the county and is an ardent admirer of Marble Cave. His eldest son, William T. Powell, is the good-natured, efficient guide to the cave. He is strong and active and a keen observer whose judgement is very reliable.
Climbing this hill, which is known as Roark Mountain, we saw in its top a large sink hole about 200 feet long by 150 feet wide and 55 feet deep, the bottom of which had dropped out, leaving a yawning chasm opening into the chamber below. Descending a series of log steps in the side of the pit, we came to two short ladders which led through the opening to a platform, from which we descended a large, strong wooden adder into what seems to be a bottomless pit. This part of the journey is fraught with many imaginary dangers to those unaccustomed to ladders, but our party had received considerable training in entering mines in different parts of the State, and consequently we hastened down without fear, anxious to see what was in store for us. The bottom of the ladder rests upon the top of a mound of debris, about 45 or 50 feet below the platform above mentioned. Climbing down this cone of earth and slabs of limestone, we reached the bottom of the vast room which is called the “Grand Amphitheater.”
Some light comes through the great rift in the roof, which is the bottom of the sink hole, and as soon as our eyes become accustomed to the semi-darkness we could see something of the really grand dimensions of the immense dome in which we stood; but when the room was illuminated by red fire, its full g r a n d e u r was revealed. The dimensions as given in the newspaper accounts are greatly exaggerated, but the truth is sufficiently grand. The room is about 150 feet wide by 200 feet long, and the roof rises in a magnificent arch to a height of 165 feet from the floor. Some stalactites were seen on this broad expanse of roof, but the beauty of the scene lay chiefly in the symmetry of the arch and the variations produced by the differences in the limestone strata.
Two beautiful examples of drip formations occur in this great amphitheater. One is the “Great White Throne,” a magnificent stalagmitic mass of pure white onyx about 50 feet high, 50 feet in extreme width and 12 or 15 feet in thickness, showing all the beautiful forms which one might imagine to be caused by the freezing of a fountain. It is hollow and one can climb more than half way to the top inside.
A few yards from the Great White Throne rises the “Spring Room Sentinel,” a beautiful fluted column of combined stalactite and stalagmite about 20 feet high and 2 to 3 feet in diameter with swelled base which stands near to the opening leading from the Grand Amphitheater to the Spring Room and to the Animal Room. This passage is a long, straight, gradually converging one following a “joint” in the limestone, which lends to a large low room of unknown dimensions which contains the mummified remains of hundreds, even thousands of animals, mainly, if not entirely, of carnivorous species. Admittance to this room is positively forbidden by the owner of the cave, but the assistants to the Smithsonian Institution at Washington have had access to the material from it and are now at work upon their identifications. A specimen from this room which was shown to me consisted of the skull and jaw bones of a cat-like animal to which portions of dried skin and fur still clung. It had a very ancient appearance. The continuation beyond the Animal Room of the joint leading to it seems to emerge in the side of a ravine outside the cave. What was once apparently an opening here is now filled with earth and debris.
Mr. Will Powell thinks that this is the place where the much desired horizontal entrance to the cave can be made with comparatively little trouble and expense.
Opening out from the passageway to the Animal Room is the Spring Room and beyond this lies the “Shower Bath Room,” the latter being a perfect example of a conical dome some 30 feet high, down the roof of which the water trickles down and flows over a low precipice to the spring room. This water showed the remarkably low temperature of 48° F.
Behind the Great White Throne, in the Grand Amphitheater, is a passageway which leads to the waterfall and to the other portions of the cave, which will be described as we gon on. The first room to which this passage leads is called “The Registry Room” because the walls are covered in places with firm, damp, red clay, in which numerous visitors have inscribed their names with finger or staff - an unstable method of gaining celebrity. Here our guide called our attention to the fact that the atmosphere had become much warmer than it was in the first great chamber. There is, in fact, a difference of six or eight degrees. Then pointing to a great black hole in the floor of the room, he said “Listen!” and taking a huge rock cast it into the abyss. After some seconds we heard the sound of the rock as it fell into water below us. The abyss is called the “Gulf of Doom.” Actual measurement proved this precipice to be 88 feet in height!
Turning to the left and descending a slippery clay bank and a narrow ladder, we reached a point at which the cave divides, one arm going past a great slab of limestone standing on end, known as “The Lost River Sentinel,” in a direction S. 30° W. to “The Lost River Canyon,” a journey which we reserved for another day. Taking the other arm, leading in a directly opposite direction, and clambering through two passages like the “Corkscrew” in Mammoth Cave, we soon reached the top of the waterfall. The edge of this fall is about 20 feet across, and the water passes through a series of beautiful little pools with projecting rims of calcite crystals before it takes its final plunge 50 feet into the darkness. The top of this waterfall is about 285 feet below the top of the hill at the entrance of the cave.
Retracing our steps for some distance from the top of the waterfall and turning on our track again at a lower level, we reached the bottom of the pit (8) into which we had cast the stone from the Registry Room above, and then passed on down a narrow defile by the aid of ladders and over slippery clay banks until we stood at the foot of the beautiful waterfall. Half way down the precipice a projection has caught the spray from the water, and the deposits of ages have formed there a beautiful bowl of carbonate of lime. Pointing to a 25 foot slope of miry clay and water, which lay just beyond us, Mr. Powell Said: “That’s the way to ‘Blonde’s Throne,’ the prettiest thing in the cave.” We looked at the prospect in dismay, and anxiously inquired whether there were no other way to get there; being answered in the negative, we left him behind, as he said there was no need of a guide, and plowed our way through the miry mass, which came to our knees. After toiling up this slope and through a narrow cleft in the rock, we reached the beginning of what they called “The Dry Crawl.” We wondered what the wet one was going to be. Down we went on our hands and knees and began the toilsome journey. One hundred and fifty feet of this, most of which was too low even for this method of locomotion, brought us to the “Midway Rest,” a small room, out of which a passage leads upward to several small chambers, in which were phantastically carved shapes in the limestone. We suggest the name of “The Temple” for one of the chambers, which contains fine Doric capitals. But Blonde’s Throne did not lie in that direction. As soon as we had gotten our breath and adjusted our surveying instruments we started on the “Wet Crawl,” and wet it surely was! We were pretty careful about the first pool, and tried to keep out of the water as much as possible, but when we reached the second pool we saw there was nothing to do but plunge in and work our way across. After thirty or forty yards of this kind of travel on hands and knees in the water, or worming our way through comparatively dry holes in the rocks, we reached a room a the base of the ascent to our destination. Further progress on the level on which we had come was stopped by a pool of water of unknown extent, known as “Mystic River,” spanned a the beginning by a low symmetrical arch of limestone.
A short, steep ascent led us to a great narrow cleft in the rocks about 100 feet high. Following this a short distance, we came to a steep incline of wet, slippery limestone, up which we climbed 25 or 30 feet, then pushing our way through a hole in the wall, barely large enough for our bodies, we were in Blonde’s Throne. This is a small room, only about 15 feet in diameter, but it is a gem. It is almost completely filled with beautiful and curious stalactites and stalagmites. Some of the stalactites were in sheet-like folds, and a sufficient number of them gave forth musical sounds when struck to enable a skillful musician to play simple tunes. The stalactites here are in all stages of growth, from narrow, hollow tubes, like pipestems, to solid pillars several inches in thickness. A small opening in the side of the room revealed the existence of a room which has never been explored. Rockets fired into it show that it must be a room of large dimensions.
Returning from Blonde’s Throne, and slipping and sliding down by the aid of the slimy rope which had helped us up the steep ascent, we reached the bottom of the incline all to soon for some of our party, Lighting up the cleft by magnesium ribbon, we could see weird drip formations filling the crevices and projecting from the walls far above our heads. The return journey to the bottom of the waterfall was made much more expeditiously than the advance, because, being thoroughly wet, muddy, and cold, we did not stop for scenery or surveyor’s measurements.
Another day was spent in exploring the windings of the “Lost River Canyon,” which, as stated above, lies out to the southwest from the Registry Room. Climbing over huge blocks of limestone which had fallen from the roof, or threading our way between slabs standing on edge, we soon came to the beginning of a much longer but drier crawl than the one just described. After worming our way along for some 200 yards, we came to a beautiful stream of water flowing swiftly through the underground channel which it had carved for itself in the l i m e s t o n e. This was the “Lost River.” In several places tortuous passages led out from this canyon, which are barren of interest, and serve merely to confuse the traveler and add to the length of the cavern. Somewhat less than a quarter of a mile from the Registry Room we ascended a steep slope and arived at “Springsted’s Throne.” This is a room about as large as Blonde’s Throne, but with a smaller amount of drip formation in it. The special feature of this room is a small recess, which is separated from the main portion by a lattice of stalactites. The cave has been explored for about a fourth of a mile beyond this room, but nothing of interest has been discovered in that direction.
The explorations thus far described have been along galleries opening out from only two places in the grand entrance dome. On the north side of the Grand Amphitheater another series of chambers opens out, most of which are comparatively small and devoid of drip formations. The first of these is the Mother Hubbard Room, in which an isolated waterworn pillar of limestone stands which has received the name “She” from its suggestion of Rider Haggard’s weird descriptions. A dry crawl of 70 feet from this room takes one to the “Battery,” a dome which is 60 feet in greatest diameter and 50 or 60 feet high. Here the bats congregate in vast numbers, whence its name. From one side of the battery a series of rooms, one of which is known as the Dungeon, and low dangerous passages extend to the Grand Amphitheater again. A low narrow passage leads from the Mother Hubbard Room to the northwest to a series of barren rooms two of which are said to rival the Grand Amphitheater in size. This part of the cave is dry. The second room reached contains considerable amounts of epsomite, MgSO₄+7H₂O, and therefore is called the Epsom Salts Room. The passage to these rooms is called the Windy Passage on account of the strong current of air which sweeps through it.
As there were no means at hand of exploring this passage and the dangerous route beyond, we did not undertake to visit it.
In addition to bats the living animals to be found in the cave consist of crickets, newts, and eyeless fish. Plant life is represented by a peculiar white fungus which grows on the rocks in the Grand Amphitheater. Vast numbers of bats make their home in the cave, especially during the winter season, and the floor is covered to a depth of many inches with bat guano. Mr. [Page 71 begins] Powell has distinguished five kinds of bats here, none of which, however, are of unusual size or appearance.
That the cave was known to the early settlers and explorers of this region is shown by the notched poles which were found in the cave when it was first rediscovered, and which evidently served as ladders for entrance into the cave. Two of these are now to be seen in the Mother Hubbard Room. Local supposition is that these notched trees were used by the Spaniards, as it is known that they occupied the land in this region before the English settlers took possession of it.
The cave as thus described is of considerable extent and possesses variety in scenery and interest. It is well worth a visit, and when the projected railroads from Aurora and Springfield pass near it, it will undoubtedly become a summer resort; but the estimation of the distances, heights and depths which have appeared in certain usually responsible papers and magazines are very wide of the truth. Its unexaggerated beauties are enough to recommend it to the popular fervor. The accompanying map represents, as accurately as the circumstances would permit, almost all of the cave that has been explored. It is certain, however, that the cave is by no means fully explored and that further investigation will add largely to this map. At present even Blonde’s Throne and Springsted’s Throne are practically inaccessible to the average visitor, but a not excessive amount of work would materially lessen the most serious difficulties in the routes.
My special thanks are due Mr. J. D. Robertson, assistant on the Missouri State Geological Survey, and Mr. H. D. Card, draughtsman for the Missouri World’s Fair Commission, for their painstaking assistance in making the accompanying map and measurements and the thermometric determinations that are given herewith. To Mr. Powell and his family is due the credit for almost all the exploration that the cave has received.
An exceptionally low temperature, 48 F°., was observed at the lowest point of the Grand Amphitheater and in the air and water of the Spring Room. Throughout the rest of the cavern the temperature seemed to be about that usually found in caves, 54° F.
In considering the scientific value of this cave, the fact should not be overlooked that this is the first cavern reported in this country containing mummified animal remains in large quantities.

DOGWOOD - dogwood has been at your side for as long as you can remember. you like to pretend that they follow you around like a lost duckling, but the truth is the opposite. you know that they'd be content to go off on their adventures alone, but you can't let that happen. both because you'd worry they'd get themselves in too much trouble but also because you'd worry they'd discover a new better life without you, and you'd be alone forever. SPRUCE - as an overly suspicious person you don't often warm up to people quickly, but the moment you saw spruce you felt an overwhelming adoration. they were just so . . . cool. you've spent your life trying to be as cool, calm, and collected as they are seemingly without effort. you want them to teach you their ways. but you are scared to approach them. how do you even tell someone that you want to be just like them? SYCAMORE - sycamore isn't a bad person, not really. they're just incredibly irresponsible and reckless and their behavior tends to rub off on everyone around them. they could pull their shenanigans all day and you really wouldn't mind. except for the fact that they're such a bad influence on dogwood, and that makes your self-assigned role of dogwood's protector so much harder.

Could you elaborate more on your post-canon AU?
which one lmao 😭😭😭
if you mean the one from the anniversary comic: not really because it was never really defined and i just more or less came up with it on the spot for the comic based on bits from my other post-canon setting.
if you mean that one, the one i mentioned in the tags (the "leo setting") yes, a little bit! (adding a cut bc i talk a bunch and there are pictures)
the gist of it is that lysandre fled kalos and has abandoned his previous identity (most of his pokémons are staying with malva, i think he only keeps his mienshao) to live in hoenn under the name leo, which is a diminutive for leofwine, his father's name (i actually came up with leofwine's name bc of this specific setting lol) nobody except malva knows he's still alive, so augustine is left thinking he's died in the team flare secret hq cave-in and they just couldn't find his body among the rubble.
he grows his hair out (A LOT) and wears different clothes. this is old art, but:
Tumblr media
after a while, he ends up travelling to sinnoh occasionally to help professor rowan with his research. because he is very stupid (perhaps he is doing it accidentally on purpose,) then, of course, augustine visits without warning, and you can guess what happens next
i had started working on a fic based on that idea, but i didn't really like it (i still don't, upon reread) then i wanted to make it a comic, but never could commit to it...
i did draw a bunch of art with leo, though, most notably this doodle comic i think about often:
Tumblr media
or this comic that kind of ends abruptly but i do still like the vibes:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
i would like to revisit it someday but who knows when... oh i also have this drawing i did for the 2019 anniversary of pokémon xy, i don't really like how lysandre looks on it but it has imo one of my hottest sycamores:

stoked that my post made it to someone cool :””) thoughts on will & testament overall??
i’ve read all vigdis hjorth’s english translated books so far except ‘is mother dead?’ but i’m so excited for that ~ i absolutely love her stream-of-consciousness writing style (she’s definitely one of my favourite authors)
{side note: would love to talk books with u more ~ do u have a goodreads or storygraph? weeeeeeeeeeee}
pls see attached a bit of the intro to ‘the freezer door’ ~ mattilda bernstein sycamore which i ♡ and i hope u do also

Omg first of all thanks!! And love that u have the Care Work url / explanation! That book looks really good, I’m excited to read it.
Just half way through the last chapter of Will and Testament. And because I’ve been listening to the audio book and falling asleep to it I feel like I haven’t fully experienced it.
I am really enjoying it though. I think the writing style is perfect for this narrative and she’s able to convey some very nuanced interpersonal stuff in a very clever way, without being explicit with it. The subtle humor in some bits is nice. The looping narrative and descriptions of how she feels is very relatable, she has a very good understanding of what it’s like to be grappling with and trying to live with such a life experience. Im also in a vaguely similar place in my recovery from the same kind of thing that happened to Bergljot and the book has given me useful new ways to think through some things.
I haven’t read any of her other books. You seem like quite a fan! Which one is ur fav?
And I don’t have good reads or anything. Would love to see yours tho! Is it linked somewhere?
Oh thanks for sharing this book! It looks darling ! Have u read please miss by grace laverly or Paul takes on the form of a mortal girl by Andrea lawlor?

do u have any nonfic or fantasy recs?
yes! in terms of the nexus of nonfic and fantasy , Akwaeke Emezi's Dear Senthuran (cross-reffing your goodreads and I agree, it's heavy and triggering as fuck) and Kai Cheng Thom's Fierce Femmes and Notorious Liars are amazing works of speculative memoir. M.G. Doherty also self-published a remarkable fairytale-memoir that more people should know about, called In the Nucleus [x]!
There's also a brutal, but incredible, book of speculative-historical poems called Zong! by M. NourbeSe Phillip that will....it will change the way you think about Everything. It's about the transatlantic slave trade and not for the faint-hearted.
I don't actually read too much *fantasy* per se, and when I do, it's lower than a fucking limbo bar -- but I can try! Event Factory is in the vein of Invisible Cities. Except waaaay more inspired. Plain Bad Heroines is fun as hell, too.
In the realm of MG/YA fantasy, there have been several good ones recently! I enjoyed Six Crimson Cranes and Daughter of the Moon Goddess,
For speculative poetry: Terese Maison-Pierre's Manifest!
For nonfic, That's Revolting! edited by Mattilda Bernstein Sycamore is a great, if a little vintage, collection of radical queer writing. The first edition is the best imo but it's not available anywhere (I actually had to reach out to Mattilda via facebook messenger to get a section to cite lmao).
There's also an academic text my colleague and I have been using a lot in our ongoing work on disorderly eating, counter-community, and social resistance - Kyla Wazana Tompkins's Racial Indigestion. She argues, among other things, for a shift from "critical food studies" to "critical eating studies". It's an amazing book on race, gender, and the politics of consumption.

Since everyone is asking about designs that don't sell well I'm curious about the ones that do sell well. What type of designs do u see tend to sell better than others? Like is it mainly just the darker colored skirts?
right now our best sellers are the bee skirt, whale skirt, cherry skirt, and sycamore skirt. the star gayzing skirt did pretty well for its first round so we’ll likely bring it back. i’m not 100% about crystal swords yet. the DM skirt was flagging for a while but seems to have recovered after we removed the trim in the last round of preorders. the witch skirt is kinda flagging so we’re considering shelving it for a while. the mushroom skirt did pretty well in its return but i’m not 100% about it either. hands and snails habe been doing pretty well and will likely return for the next round of preorders. i’m not sure about everything else.
so yeah it’s mostly darker skirts with the cherry tree skirt being the big exception.

Nuz Report- X Water/Poison
God I feel like shit both mentally and physically right now, and I cant put a button on why. This might be an issue, considering I’ve got like half an hour or so to get this bad boy done.
Hmm. Let’s talk about the nuzlocke I finished yesterday, that’ll work, I can vomit words on that.
Tumblr media
I finished a Pokemon X Duolocke with 1 death yesterday, but the fuckers made me fight for it.
For round 6 of the Nuzlocke Premier League, we did Duolocke Runs of Pokemon X and Y. Now I was hoping to take this month off, since only 3 of the team’s 4 members have to do each round, and I’ve done literally all of them previously without a break. But unfortunately, our 4th had to pull out for real life stuff- understandable, but still a pain. Kalos is probably my worst region for Nuz stuff (save Galar which I haven’t tried yet) and being locked to two types, after my allies had taken the starters I didn’t despise, was not exactly a thrilling prospect.
Tumblr media
(these screenshots were taken post-E4. I was Lv.68 going in, same as Diantha’s ace.)
With my teammates taking Psychic/Normal and Fighting/Dark respectively, my only starter choice was Froakie. This is literally the first time I’ve used Froakie for anything, and it meant I had to reckon with the abyss that is its natural learnset. Chau (named after Knives from Scott Pilgrim) was an absolute mess until it hit Greninja, and even then took forever to be actually good. Pinch-hitting with U-turn was useful, but that TM comes frustratingly late.
With Froakie in mind, and Dark taken, one of my types had to be Water. I ended up choosing Poison for the natural synergy- Poison can take on the Grasses that scare my Water types, and Water can deal with Poison’s Ground weakness. Greninja, being also Dark, can scare off Poison’s Psychic weakness, with the Poisons taking the Fairies that Gren doesn’t like. It made sense to me.
Tumblr media
The only other super earlygame mon that made it to the final team was Pikablu the Azumarill. Gen 6 introduced a thing where baby Pokemon get 3 perfect IVs by default, and Pikablu’s ended up in Attack, Defense, and Speed (with Huge Power of course), making it one of the best Azumarills you can possibly end up with. Funny rabbit didn’t get to abuse its powerful Fairy STAB until learning Play Rough very very late, but thwacking things with Return and Aqua Tail proved to be enough.
Tumblr media
While I played around with a Beedrill and Panpour early, the next mainstay wouldn’t show up until Sycamore offers a Gen I starter in Lumiose, where I of course chose Bulbasaur. Rafflé was such a versatile, hard-hitting mon that did a patently absurd amount of work in the E4. Sleep Powder is a useful enough tool that access to it guaranteed him staying on the team, but being the first actually good Poison around (save Budew->Roserade, but I didn’t know where to get a Shiny Stone and it’s redundant anyway) meant a lot early on.
Tumblr media
It was around here that I had the only death of the run. Outside of Connecting Cave lies a trainer with an Axew, which I completely forgot knows the frankly overpowering at that point Dragon Rage, one-shotting Anaesthesia the Croagunk. It was a real shame, I was kind of hoping she’d be able to redeem the line for me, but I guess it wasn’t to be. She was Modest anyway so she wouldn’t have been good regardless, I suppose.
Moving through gyms and the awful Kalosian pacing, I ended up picking up a few other temporary team-members- Vaporeon and Crobat. [bad meme] the Vaporeon, despite having an excellent nature, just didn’t have the stats to cut it, and I wasn’t comfortable with Flaps adding yet another Electric weakness to the team, especially with Clemont approaching.
Tumblr media
[bad meme] would get replaced by Lagrange the Lapras, since Ice seemed like an extremely handy type to have around. Lapras is another one of those mons that’s just generally pretty solid, his bulk being much appreciated along with the coverage Ice Beam (and later, Thunderbolt) brought. Looking back, I ended up with a bit of a bulkier team than average, but I feel like that was fine to make up for the fragility of Chau and one of my later members.
Clemont was the first Gym that actually scared me, and it wasn’t because of his actually good Pokemon. My main answer to him was Venusaur, except, he has an Emolga….that bloody rodent gave me more trouble than anything else on the team, since it hit everything super-effectively if I didn’t grind something else up (and I didn’t).
Choices for the team ended up being pretty slim pickings. The lategame of XY has a lot less variety for my two types than the earlygame, with multiple repeated options, and a lot of them were less than appealing. Combine that with my lackluster luck with a lot of areas and my team felt a little stretched for playables. That Beedrill only left the team after Clemont.
Tumblr media
It would be replaced by Quaaaaaaaaag. Despite having the worst of Quagsire’s two abilities, he pulled more than his weight, even if he just clicked Earthquake most of the time. An immune switch for Electric was absolutely essential for the run, letting Chau’s U-turn be extremely safe in certain scenarios.
The last team member was somewhat of a surprise. I was running around Frost Cavern for the only legal encounter, a 10% shot at Haunter. I’ve always been a lot less high on that line than most, gotta get that hipster cred in, but that does fly out the window when you get to legitimately use a Shiny one.
Tumblr media
Unfortunately due to the rules of the NPL, I was not permitted to get Mega Akuta running, confining him to the shade shiny he was. But I wasn’t going to pass up the chance anyway. Akuta had huge utility being able to switch into Normal, Fighting, and Ground completely freely, and break just about anything with a variety of heavy Special attacks. His paper-thin defenses didn’t matter if he never got hit, though I was always loathe to switch him in just in case he got Crit to death on entry.
The final team paired up awkwardly against the Kalos E4, and I was a bit worried about having 4 waters and 2 poisons instead of 3/3 (my other options were like, not good) but we made it through without losing anyone. Malva and Drasna were, unsurprisingly, not hard, and Siebold’s Gyarados terrified me with Dragon Dance but didn’t actually get an attack off before Lagrange’s Thunderbolt took it out. I was extremely concerned about Wikstrom, but a rather silly strategy prevailed- using Rafflé to Sleep Powder and set up Growth (shoulda taught Swords Dance tbh) before rolling him with Bulldoze (I forgot to get the Earthquake TM). Diantha was similarly scary, seeing as her Mega Gardevoir had SE on everything except Quaaaaaaaaaag , and he wasn’t going to be able to take two. Chau was in when she came out, and I knew Night Slash wasn’t going to KO, so she had to get out of there- U-Turning into an already chipped Akuta was the only play and I had to hope she went for Moonblast instead of Thunderbolt. She did, but it got the Special Attack drop, which presented its own conundrum- does Akuta KO from here, or does he die? Because I can’t switch around forever, chip damage wasn’t going to get me far when she had healing items in reserve. I went for it, and it turns out Akuta did get the KO, but I was nailbiting the whole time.
I’m hoping next round, Crystal Superless, is less grating on my nerves, if I even have to do it at all. Because, fuck, I need a break.
What’s that, NWC is starting again? Oh, sign me up fam,

Any other animals that play Exy?
Tumblr media
THE IMMEDIATE ANSWER IS OF COURSE
However, that doesn’t explain much does it? We really need to consider this. Worms they get to play exy underground so we don't see it (except for miners because they also go underground) so where else wouldn’t we be able to access?? THE OCEAN AND THE SKY. BOTH BLUE THINGS. (I read that they’re not blue but I’m not colourblind I've seen the sky before are they making me about to be mad? a fool?)
------------------
OCEAN EXY - Consider all the ocean animals your first thought is Dolphins well let me tell you why you’re wrong, Dolphin’s are too busy singing the hit song ‘thanks for all the fish’ and in the video, it’s clear that there’s not a racquet in sight. Similar to WORMS I believe its PLANKTON that play Exy and their court? Inside whales belly now bare with me !!!!! UR THINKING VAL, PRAY TELL, WHAT ARE YOU ON ABOUT well!!
Tumblr media
look at these bad boys and tell me they don’t play exy!?!
--------------------
SKY EXY - ADMITTEDLY I DON’T KNOW WHO LIVES IN THE SKY BUT THE CLOUDS SEEM LIKE A GREAT PLACE TO PLAY EXY AND THEN I REMEMBERED MY YEARS WATCHING THE SKY (I FALL OVER A LOT AND THE SKY IS RIGHT ABOVE ME) BUT I REMEMBER THERE IS PLANES UP THERE AND THEN DIFF AIRLINES ARE OBVIOUSLY DIFF TEAMS? THEY CANT ALWAYS BE CARRYING PASSENGERS PLANES NEED DAYS OFF TOO SO THEY RELAX AND PLAY EXY IN THE SKY!! ------------ lastly, I was wondering if plants played exy and I asked my brother (he’s the best you should meet him!!) who is a plant enthusiast and he assured me plants play games like chess and poker instead of exy
-----------
I know I said lastly but I think there's probably a lot more animals that play exy these are just the biggest teams in those areas if you want to get your pet into exy its best to start at an early age (at least before the first 2% of their lifespan is over) for them to actually go pro however as a hobby any age can do it!! I know I said plants don't but my brother said “the plant that would be MOST LIKELY to give it a try would be a sycamore tree” so there you have it, folks!!

Mayday, you were going down. Or rather, you wanted to go down on Mayday - the point was, you didn’t ask questions about how you got to where you were. You just rolled with it. The dumb suggestion your friend had given you about setting up a kissing booth had been a good one in retrospect. It was a wild one. A real good old, funny joke that had turned around and bit you on the rear at the last second. Now you were the punchline.
“You don’t have to!” you pleaded, a shade brighter than her as hundreds of eyes stared at you. The crowd around you appeared as a singular object, adorned with razor sharp emotions. It rippled and surged with emotions, all of which pierced your soul in its fragile state.
The show had finished, and you had waited so long for Mayday to appear. The fear had been palpable by the time she left and crossed your path as intended. But the fear of her reaction caused you much more distress. Zuke, too, had come to a halt beside her. His expression remained perplexed. There was not a single thought between either of them, and yours had been quick to abandon you.
“It’s free though!” you squeaked as anxiety compelled you to say anything. The result had left you even more flustered, but hey, you managed to speak! Mayday gripped her guitar, and her knuckles whitened from the tension. Her jaw hung slack, and a rumble clawed its way from her throat.
“U~uh.” That was all she could manage. The confusion wiped itself from her companion’s face, and Zuke seemed to regain his intelligence. A smile settled onto his smug face.
“Well, are you gonna do it?” Zuke asked Mayday with a nudge. Her hand flew up in a flash and swatted away his attempt to motivate her. She motivated herself plenty, evident in the shift in her expression. A fury clung to her like a wildfire through the trees, and it burnt itself out just as quick.
“I was just gonna you know-” she blurted out. “Ah!”
Before you could register what she had said, you found yourself locked in embarrassment. She had turned sharp on her heel, and she stormed towards you. All you saw was a glisten to her eye. It was pure, concentrated dedication that had emerged from the ruins of apprehension. And her hands reached for you.
There was no backing out as you were yanked forwards. The table shifted beneath you in the chaos, and you steadied yourself on its uncertain surface. A gasp rang out from the crowd. Vision had abandoned you, and you were left to rely on your other senses from within her grasp. Vanilla undertones sweetened the kiss that had fallen upon your lips. Her scent, her warmth, it all washed over you.
Yet, the tension hadn’t faded. If anything, it climaxed. You had to choke back tears from the way the whole situation overwhelmed you. Mayday kissed you. She had you in her arms - well, her fists. You didn’t care. You were just happy that the stupid little plan had worked.
Despite the aggression with which she had grabbed you, everything about the kiss was soft. Even the way her knuckles wrapped around the fabric of your clothes allowed you the freedom to back out if you so wished. Chapped lips brushed against yours with a tender touch. Everything you could have said about the kiss would have made it seem like an eternity. Except it wasn’t. It was just the the amount of information your brain struggled to process and savour that stretched for miles.
Then, it ended in release. You slumped back into your plastic fold up seat, and Mayday stood opposite your booth. Both of you were dazed, and in the heat of the moment, Mayday didn’t waste any time.
“You could have at least bought me dinner first!” she exclaimed. You were left grasping for words, as Zuke’s expression creased in amusement.
“You kissed me first!” you blurted out with haste.
“Yeah-” Mayday began, “well.”
There was no ‘well’. Her sentence finished there, without a point. Frustration grew on her face, and finally, it came to her.
“Yeah, well, let’s do it right then!” In a flash, you found she had snatched you up again, this time by the wrist. You were dragged from behind your stall, and the crowd parted to the raging mess that ploughed through. Mayday waved a hand behind you both, and you caught a glimpse of your friend's excited face and thumbs up.
“Zuke, I’ll be back later! Cover me!” Mayday called after herself, as the crowd descended on the vulnerable drummer - alone and afraid. All whilst you went on the best date of your life.

okay so .... im fairly unsatisfied with the vast majority of the Older Pnfs stuff ive seen (including the canon ones cough cough. somewhat i was going to say that as a fun aya jab but i actually did enjoy how much of the characters ended up in where they were in life then like. theater kid buford? candace going to law school and crushing it? baljeet already a college professor at like, 19? wonderful.) except for the aya stuff i mentioned in those parentheses and that one post that i cant find anymore that was like “ferb becomes a rockstar” which is like, yeah, absolutely he does
anyways i wanted to do some of my own thinking cus yknow thats a fun thing to do and trying to figure out how to convincingly age A Triangle and The Letter F so its yknow a fun excercise....obvs theres A Lot More phin here than ferb or candace but that’s mostly just cus im better at drawing phineas and the older ferbs i do have didnt come out as well and i think need a lot of work.
also phineas’ definite destiny at at least some point in his life is a summer camp counselor i mean COME ON. i was going to put “campe diem” on his shirt there as a fun pun because carpe diem is like yknow the whole song and Theme Of The Show and stuff but then i remembered campe diem is the god damn c*mp c*mp slogan so uh, f.
as usual additional comments and stuff in the image captions. oh also these are a littttttle bit old not super old just a bit i think if im gonna doodle some more theres some things id change like probably give candace glasses entirely as a reference to a silly one-off joke line in flop starz and remove ferb’s glasses there cus i mostly put them on him just to make him look a bit older without trying all that hard and i think i can do better than that. i mostly just need to get better at drawing ferb in the first place
anyways thats my 4 paragraphs of justification for this post i hope u enjoy it thanks for watching dont forget to like comment and su

I love the way make my fave professor (AKA Sycamore) petty as fuck because tbh that is sooooo me. I wish I can achieve that level of petty. I was also wondering if you could do headcanons for everyday life with Sycamore and his s/o. Like does he try to initiate tickle fights but end up getting roundhouse kicked to the face by accident. Pls. I need silly and funny headcanons with our French bae.
SYCAMORE IS THE BINCH WHO PLAYS TOO MUCH AND ENDS UP LOSING AN EYE CAUSE HE DIDN’T LISTEN WHEN HIS S/O TOLD HIM TO STOP FOR HIS OWN SAFTEY
probably fucks w/ his S/O a bit if they don’t speak french, initially whispering actual sweet cute things in french and slowly start saying just more and more like abstract things until one day he literally just calls them his ‘little baguette’ and!!! Now there is no trust! Even when he tries to call them normal french pet names now they won’t believe him bc they aren’t sure what is actually a culture gap and what is him just being an asshole
he is so petty don’t even try to tell me he’s not - he’s just mostly petty in that one way where it’s like ‘living well is the best revenge’ but takes it to the level where he’s making sure the people he’s got the beef with Knowthis bitch is posting on instagram about self care and how he’s never felt better right after a fight with lysander or smthn, and goes out clubbing to show Just How Good He Is Feeling And He Couldn’t Give Less Of A Shit About Whatever Drama Went Down (also clubbing in France is off the fucking chain where my french girls @)
Doesn’t know how to swim, but he will get out into the middle of the ocean with only an inner tube and half a bottle of sunblock spf 5000 to protect his pasty ass bc he loves the water
The most useless grown ass man ever, probably needs his assistants to open pickle jars for him and really…what else are men for…(jk bb u kno ilu come back)
