OLYMPIAN DESIIIIIGNS.

After all this time brainrotting on Greek mythology and the Iliad and all that stuff, I just HAD to draw consistent designs for the major gods. The first ten of them are finally done, and hopefully I don't have to name them, they should be pretty self explanatory. x)

I did a lot of research on symbols and iconography and shapes language, I'm kinda proud of those designs so far. Will use them in my doods. And can't wait to start working on the others (mainly Demeter, Hestia, Hades, Persephone and Hephaestus).

My biggest issue in Epic the Musical is Odysseus, actually. In this essay, I will....

#good god I hate his (lack of) character arc #if you want me to believe he is a monster then he gotta be consistently!!!! monstrous!!!#but no he is constantly allowed to be a poor pissbaby because portraying him as anything *gasp* morally dubious is bad #idk i don't know anything about the og myths but to me Epic's Odysseus bounces around between moods far too fast but he is always allowed t #reset back into what he has been from the start #none of his angst feels earned at any point because basically all the “bad choices” he's been put into have been outside of his control #except maiming the sirens and sacrificing people to scylla #which feel so out of character at that point to me because the next song he's whining to Zeus to not make him choose between him and his me #bitch if you were willing to sacrifice them two seconds ago why not now #why not have odysseus be the one to suggest sacrificing his men instead of him to show how far he is actually willing to go #but noooo his hand needs to be forced because???#at that point in the musical I feel like he should've been far more cruel so the Ithaca saga will actually feel like something #gives this man some agency to be a fucked up guy by himself. please.#it would've made the poseidon fight even more satisfying. he's capable because he has grown so cold. but no #idk maybe I'm missing the point but ugh #I saw a great comment unrelated to this that was like #“if you aren't comfortable with dark implications in your stories then don't write dark stories”#which I feel like applies here so well #epic the musical critical

I personally think that if Carter got with any Greek person Horus would be so pissed because “I HAVE SO MANY PERFECTLY GOOD FOLLOWERS AND YOU HAD TO CHOOSE A GREEK?!” but in a very Horus manner (I haven’t read the books in a while sorry) because he is still bitter about the Greeks

It’s a bit of both. If Carter had fallen for any other Greek it would be a much bigger problem between the two of them but even Horus can grudgingly admit that the little nymph is something truly different from any Greek he has ever known… and it doesn’t hurt that Percy is Percy and her brand of chaos would appeal to… most war gods.

That being said Carter never hears the end of choosing a Greek of all people and there’s a lot of mental muttering about Carter attempting to ruin Egypt right after saving it whenever Percy isn’t in direct eyeshot.

thinking about the Percy Jackson show and how I, humbly, think fan-critics are missing the forest for the trees when they complain it’s not a perfect adaptation. What’s really neat about the show is watching a creator have the opportunity to revisit and perfect a 20-year-old work - I mean, how cool is that?? How interesting is it to make notes of the places where the story & its details diverge to make a new whole! The places where Rick agreed “these story beats are still important” versus the ones that have - frankly - been improved, or at least changed. From an art-appreciator’s standpoint I really really enjoy that.

#Percy Jackson and the Olympians #pjo #the main change that surprised me was the emphasis on Sally x Poseidon #bc it had just NEVER OCCURRED TO ME oh damn #what COULD Sally have meant to him to be the SOLE EXCEPTION IN 70 YEARS!#which is an excellent bit of character development that clearly didn’t occur to Rick in the beginning either!#I also think it’s fine that Percy is knowledgeable of the myths! they’ve built that into his upbringing (see: above)#it’s also natural Percy is gonna be a little less funny/sarcastic because it’s a totally different medium!

i finished watching percy jackson and what i got from it is that book authors should not be involved with writing for the screen adaptation of their work if they don’t have experience writing scripts because it was truly horribly paced. that and the fact that sally jackson is the best character in the show.
