i love how everyone close to "jiang li" at some point or another has their moment of "girl i KNOW you're cooking up some shit and you are not going to tell me anything about what it is but that's okay. do what you gotta do, i gotchu." like everyone goes dang this girl is up to something...no idea what it is but it doesn't matter. this 18yo who spent the last 10 years in a convent knows what she's doing and i am just gonna follow her lead on this. i am yours to command, recently former teen nun. no questions asked. you got this.
#like they are right to trust her because she does clearly know what she's doing#and also secretly she's actually like mid-twenties and very world-wise#but THEY don't know that. they're just so impressed with her that they handwave the whole 'lived on a remote mountain with no access#to the wider world from age 8 onward' thing#like that's a pretty big thing to handwave! but that's how good she is. even knowing that they can't deny she knows her shit#the double#my posts#ye mingyu being an early example (san'jiu the legend that you are) but also ye shijie and actually all the ye family#even her fake dad eventually gets some version of this where he's like. i'm gonna stop interfering because you know what you're about#xiao heng doesn't count because a) he definitely knows she's xue fangfei and b) he usually does know what she's cooking#also okay calling her a teen nun is making me think of harrow now#tlt/the double crossover when

this might be a hot take... but if you care about disavowing media made by bad people out of fear of looking like a bad person yourself more than you care about actually doing good things... you might have your priorities (and your morals) screwed up a bit :/
(see my tags for more of my thoughts on this topic! please try to avoid making make bad-faith assumptions about what i mean!)
#melonposting#there is a good case for not wanting to associate with something on account of the creator being harmful. sure whatever#but people have talked at length about the sort of moral ocd that it promotes when that idea is fervently preached and enforced#i don't know about you but i think there's a big difference between#a) not wanting people to associate with something because the media itself spouts harmful rhetoric#and because its bigoted creator both benefits from people engaging with the books and is idolized by many of the books' fans#and b) not wanting people to vocally enjoy ANYTHING made by ANYONE who's held any harmful ideology at any point#because doing so 'inherently' supports and spreads those harmful ideologies#it's true that you cannot separate the art from the artist#but good people can make bad art and bad people can make good art. artistic talent is not inherently correlated with the artist's morals#the goodness/badness of a person CAN seep into the art they make. and it often does. and that can affect one's enjoyment of it#but even then there's nuance to be had on how to deal with it#like my hero academia for example. when i started watching it in middle school i didn't know how misogynistic it would be#of course i ended up seeing it in the show (and god it's so misogynistic)#and i ended up learning that the 'joke' sexual-harasser character is a self-insert for the creator#which of course i could never get behind. the creator is undeniably a horrible guy#at the same time though the show means a lot to me and i've gained a lot from watching it#i won't elaborate here on how but believe me it isn't superficial. if you want to ask me about it i'd be happy to share#i can hold both in my mind. the disgust and the enjoyment. i don't think those have to be mutually exclusive#of course not everyone is like that; you could immediately stop liking the show on discovering the gross stuff. and that's your prerogative#i don't know... i agree with the values behind avoiding media made by people known to have moral failings#and in some cases (like harry potter and jkr) i fully endorse the values and the practice. but such cases are very specific#but in most cases i fear the practice is misguided and unnuanced and ultimately unhelpful in fulfilling one's values#it is largely a philosophical matter: about how an individual regards their moral standing in the context of themselves and other people#which is important to discuss - especially in our globalized internet age! speaking of which feel free to disagree with me#if you want to have a civil discussion i'm more than open to it#but no matter how important this matter... there are way more important ones in the world. especially right now#calling out people who watch a youtuber who said something bigoted 5 years ago does little to stop that bigotry overall#just have good morals and practice them! support oppressed people! be thoughtful and understanding and compassionate!#callouts and dni lists rarely make for impactful advocacy!!!

Warning- this is a very petty post, but I think I'm entitled to at least one petty, pissed-off reaction every time I finish a classic novel that hit harder than I expected so take this as my quota for the year.
Also spoiler warning for a book that came out over a century ago but still, I didn't know the plot going in so don't want to ruin it for anyone else, if you haven't read it shut your eyes. (Also Local Tumblr User Going Wild Over Book Published a Hundred Years Ago That Everybody Else Already Read should probably be categorised as akey part of indigenous tumblr culture at this point).
Anyway I just finished the War of the Worlds and in between studying I've thinking about Themes and Motifs as you do, and idly looking for further analysis. I then accidentally ran into an article called 'A Quiet Place II Succeeds Where the War of the Worlds Failed' and:
Now I haven't seen any of the Quiet Place films, this is not a rant against them and of course everyone is entitled to their own opinions. But re: the ending of The War of the Worlds, I have to ask, did this guy somehow miss, uh, the entire point of the book or am I just utterly insane?
#You're right it's not very satisfying for humanity that the invaders are foiled by a bacteria and not human action! Maybe that's the point!#Maybe it's supposed to be FRIGHTENING and make you ask questions about what humans will do under extreme stress#Not be a morally uplifting tale about Humanity Heroically Defeating the Martians in a Glorious Hollywood Ending#Maybe it's MEANT to be unsatisfying because this is not a straightforward fairytale#I mean I've only read it once and don't know much about Wells' work so I might have misunderstood the point of the book too#But at places it is a very pessimistic view of the human condition and that's partly WHY IT'S SO POWERFUL#That doesn't mean there aren't moments of individual acts of heroism (the Thunderchild for example)#But the question is not just 'how will humanity beat the Martians and prove that we're still the masters of the universe'#Rather 'a) why is humanity so confident that it's ultimately in control of its own destiny#And b) here's lots of scenes of societal collapse and of people pushed to the brink and what would YOU do in those circumstances?#Would YOU feel remorse about silencing the curate even if it did lead to his death?#What if it rather than a foolish adult it had been a small child?#And even if they were weak did they DESERVE it? Yes it might have been necessary but should it be policy going forward?#Would you also be attracted briefly by the certainties that the artilleryman's (rather fascist) plan seems to offer so humanity survives?#But what sort of humanity would that be if it DID survive and is it worth it? The narrator feels he needs to justify the curate's death#The artilleryman would have probably never have thought it was anything OTHER than justifiable or indeed laudable#Under strain and stress would you start to turn against even your loved ones and become brutal?#Is that the only hope for human survival beyond complete surrender? And was the destruction of London maybe even 'cleansing'#In the eugenics sense or in the sense of a natural horror of dirt and germs?#And the vast exodus of six million people fleeing headlong in panic - we might not have seen that exact phenomenon#But didn't the twentieth century subsequently go on to show us unprecedented scale of slaughter and refugee movements and communal strife?#At the end of the day what really separates humanity from other animals? And what separates us from the Martians?#It's not an uncontroversial book- it was written over a hundred years ago for goodness sake and there are questions worth asking#about the way imperialism and arguments about eugenics and population control and all sorts of other dodgy areas operated on Wells' mind#But dear God I really don't think the problem with the book is that 'Humanity didn't save the day!'#Unsatisfying ending? Yes. A FAILURE? No not in my opinion- looks like it was exactly what Wells set out to do#Humanity didn't win the war of the worlds they had a narrow escape and though it might not be martians next time#Why wouldn't disaster return in the future? Sure we've studied their flying machines and even preserved a martian in a jar#But for all our science what have we ACTUALLY learned that will enable us to avert future human catastrophes? Ethically or socially?#Alright rant over- as usual my opinion is not universal nor necessarily well-informed this take just really got my goat

Happy Queer Media Monday!
Today: The Lights of Prague by Nicole Jarvis
Another highly personal one.
(My copy of The Lights of Prague, flanked by two of my bat plushies. Picture taken in Old Town Square, after dark.)
Prague, not long after the introduction of gaslights on the street. The guild of lamplighters doubles as elite monsterfighter squad, whose job is to keep the normal population safe from the numerous beings active at nighttime. Meanwhile, said monsters have their own hidden society. Both worlds get thrown in disarray by a series of experiments, that, if successful, would let the pijavice, vampire-like creatures, go out during the sunlight hours. Lamplighter Domek and pijavice Ora get sucked in the middle of the conflict, struggling to keep up with the conspiracies as well as their feelings for one another.
The reasons why this book is so special to me are personal more than anything else, but I still feel that it would serve as a good example for changes in the fantasy genre.
This was the first thing I bought when I arrived to Prague for my one year in film school. Then it took me almost two years to read it, because I was reading everything but this book. The thing is, this is the EXACT kind of story I would have LOVED as a teenager, but apparently, I grew out of it and kind of lost interest. The book itself is good, and I really regret not getting to it ten - fifteen years sooner. It is also, all in all, not really that special or different from the ones that I did read back then.
What did stand out for me was the casual queerness. I bought it because of the Prague connection, and was fully expecting it to be completely straight, like the books I used to read as a teenager. It wasn’t. Ora is bisexual, having had two major relationships with women, as well as multiple with men, and Domek’s friend Cord (as well as his mystery boyfriend) is gay. It is all treated very casually, but it is very visibly there.
As I said before, I know this exact kind of book. I used to devour them around 2009 - 2012 (ish). Back then, this kind of casual queerness just didn’t happen. It did not.
Following the progress of queer representation is often frustrating because of how slow it is. It feels like it should be so normalized by now, and yet we are still stagnating and waiting for crumbs to drop. However, the progress becomes very visible the moment you look at the bigger picture in history, and compare media we have today with the way things were even ten years ago. Once upon a time something comes along that hits you over the head with this progress, and I feel like it’s a good thing to stop for a second and appreciate it.
So yeah, that is what The Lights of Prague symbolises to me.
Here is Nicole Jarvis’ personal webpage. About the pijavice, I only found this entry on the Monster Wiki.
Queer Media Monday is an action I started to talk about some important and/or interesting parts of our queer heritage, that people, especially young people who are only just beginning to discover the wealth of stories out there, should be aware of. Please feel free to join in on the fun and make your own posts about things you personally find important!
#other thing worth noting is the cultural diversity#like ok this is still a major city in Europe so probably not the best example#but back when I was into these kinds of books they were all#a) Brittish#b) whatever country the author was from#(Nicole Jarvis is American with no connection I could find to Prague or the Czeh Republic btw)#*Czech Republic sorry for the typo#but now you go into a bookshop and you find books#set in historic China or the Arab world or wherever#it's just nice#anyway go for it if you like urban fantasy / historic fantasy kind of stuff#and visit Prague if you get the chance#Prague is amazing I love Prague so much#Told you this would be a personal post#books#book rec#The Lights of Prague#Nicole Jarvis#fantasy#queer characters#queer representation#Queer Media Monday

The concept of good and evil as a cosmic balance of the universe as a world building thing has always wigged me out since before I could even put my finger on what.
So much of it, when improperly done (ie, good vastly outweighing the bad, evil must be eradicated entirely) is just... The thinnest veneer of a plot device that makes it so hard to develop any good sense of nuance or even real understanding. It reeks of propaganda, and self righteous at that, even when in universe it's a hard proven fact. And it's always the bad/evil being unnatural, inherently wrong, the mere existence irredeemable.
Even when there's a bit more thought put into it, something like 'there is evil in every heart, but we must learn to understand it, and accept it, so we are not overcome' still has, like, that black and white binary to it, like sure there's shades of grey, but it's still... Based around the morals of the creator? It's an entirely objective concept, this good and evil.
Even today, cultures and religions around the world can have wildly varying ideas on what are virtues and what are cardinal sins that'll get you punished forever (even the words there are from one religion that famously cannot agree within itself). In the past global values were even more extreme as people learned more about the world over thousands of years (ye olde sexism is a big example).
Yes, it might not be true of reality, but even in fiction I still find works that explore the concept of a world order that incorporates good and evil physically or spiritually just... Off. Like that one terry pratchet quite from death I am going to quote very loosely - 'grind this universe down to its very building blocks, and show me one speck of justice. One atom of mercy'. The response is 'but people - we have to believe in these things! We need to believe in something!'.
Of course people need to believe in it. We do. We need justice and mercy and love and kindness. But to make those human concepts integral to the universe itself - magic forces of good and light and purity, and evil and darkness and corruption... It always sort of falls through.
But I'd also love to play with that. I'd love to explore other ways a fantasy world could work that could be misinterpreted by its denizens and good and evil. Something that has atoms or motes or fairy dust to make up its being. Decay and repair, perhaps. Warmth and cold. Light and dark as more than the presence or absence of radiation. The dark as a radiation of its own.
To say something is evil for its mere physical existence, I find that very hard to believe.
#Decay and repair - which would necromancy be?#How would the ethics of each culture in this world revolve around to fit around it?#I'm not talking about things clearly created for harm - the triple edged blade for example is illegal under the Geneva convention.#It prevents wounds from closing and scars horrifically. It is and always will be a tool for cruelty. But is the metal evil? The hilt? No.#To question something too is so quickly called evil. At the very least an evil sympathiser. In other places it's a virtue and praised.#And I'm not talking about the worst crimes either. Those are evil in and of themselves. They don't need to produce dark magic in order to b#horrific and irredeemable.#But the general response to the questioning of the good/evil binary is often just. The shining white knights do human experimentation.#BORING. 'ohhhh it's a cover up' that's hardly exclusive to fictional magic governments#You know what did the best version of this I've seen? FULL METAL ALCHEMIST. now THAT. THAT was a good mystic balance system.#Give us more of THAT.#Screw the immortal courts of judgement outside the mortal realm gimme a single mf monster who will never ever budge on the rules ever#But can be loopholed and is delighted

the fact that chock/bates have a world title but hubbell/donohue don’t is the greatest crime against ice dance since *checks notes* everything else that’s happened to ice dance in the past five years
#look i get that they were both ready to move on#but cmon#this was their season to finally be the bride!#and if we’re being real they probably could’ve won much more#without judging tomfoolery#and some baffling packaging choices#anyway#the c/b world title is an example of how mediocrity can prevail#go forth and be okay#figure skating#worlds 2023

something i’ve seen frequently in football circles especially with the rise of social media (where ppl engage with the sport in absolutely bizarre ways but that’s another topic for another day) is this longstanding obsession with ‘(winning) mentality.’ how is it quantified? how do you prove its existence? how consistent must it be for a club to acquire this ‘mentality?’ it’s just bonkers to me because you’d assume that every club and every fanbase would want to win, just some a) have better resources to do so or b) some overperform/underperform as is the case with any sport which leads to drawing some kind of conclusions about this ‘mentality’ or c) some fanbases just have a better time rationalising a potential loss within the external factors which of course also leads to drawing conclusions about this ‘mentality.’ i guess my problem with it is just that it’s become such a buzzword where teams get either praised or insulted for their mentality when it’s so subjective and influenced by other factors too (doing well, doing badly, general trajectory of the club, personal satisfaction with individual achievements, media opinion, etc).
#was looking at absolutely ludicrous exchanges on the bird app and it’s just like ?#for example woolwich fans (and henry) saying tottenham fans have a weak mentality for being satisfied with a draw#which a) is not true and b) one could point to their team being on top of the league all season and croaking during the run in#is that winning mentality? but then again you could argue that they had a young squad that overperformed massively#and even then you would be ignoring external factors in all of these situations which for spurs’ case would be#having a fresh starting xi most of whom are young and haven’t played for the team/pl (on this level) before#and that historically tottenham have had an abysmal record at the emirates so a draw and positive footy are taken as a good result#and for woolwich (calling them this bc i don’t want fights lol) you’ve also got to see that#the season had a full wc in the middle and many many other top 4-6 teams underperformed#i just feel like this buzzword that we’ve got now this mentality is disguising#discussions abt the core issues of a team or even halfway intellectual discussions abt football#and it’s a bit discouraging like you want to talk abt a club struggling or doing well and it’s like it’s the mentality harhar#mentality at its essence is important don’t get me wrong you’re more likely to play better for a team if you believe you can do well#but every fan can point to times of good and bad mentality. what’s more important is that the captains get up and the whole squad believes#in itself and whatever it is that is binding them together and just have faith#that’s what makes the winning so special. not so much the mentality and the potential pressure it puts on a player and club to perform#but that belief in something beyond just winning that is what makes it consistent#in a perfect world anyway in reality the richest clubs win that’s just the way things go

I agree with you on all those buddie moments. Especially eddie touching bucks shoulder in 5x01. Like... thats such a normal common platonic thing to do. If you're manouvreing around someone and getting up from a crouch in a tight spot of course youre gonna touch their shoulder. Sometimes the way people read certain buddie interactions im like... have your ever interacted with people in real life? Its just perfectly normal friendly interactions. I understand the instinct to look into every frame for a deeper meaning but sometimes people act like it couldn't possible be explained in a non-romantic way
Sorry rant over. Love buddie analysis generally but sometimes I'm like "come on guys"
yeah...i mean, to be fair, we all have a very specific type of blinders on when it comes to the ships we like and it's no use pretending otherwise, so we're all likely to have done this at some point, whether we realize it or not. and it IS fun to freak out and obsess over the little things! but it is a little weird when people start insisting that [insert very normal and platonic thing] is definitely romantic and can't be anything else. i mean, it all depends on the kind of boundaries each individual draws between romance and friendship—what might be romantic for some wouldn't be romantic for others. lol.
#that being said we can—and should—draw a line between instances that may not be necessarily romantic IRL but are absolutely romantic in the#context of the in-universe rules that have been established on the show#for example if the narrative only saves big moments of worry and anguish for the main couples#then fans would not be unreasonable for interpreting a scene where character A freaks out over character B as romantic#that isn't to say that friends aren't capable of having that kind of love for each other or anything dumb like that#bc how it works in the real world has no relevance due to how the narrative canonically chooses to prioritize certain types of love over#others#and i feel like ppl often willfully ignore this in favor of mocking certain non canon ships (cough queer ships cough)#but. uh. fans aren't 'dumb' or 'obsessed with romantic love' for picking up what the narrative is telling them#anyway#i have a lot of thoughts on this clearly#neethu answers#anon

The world is fucking disgusting
#i think a lot about ppl who grew up thinking the world and how it's organized is fundamentally good#to a degree this is still me bc I'm white I grew up suburban#but I always saw and hand understanding of both a. bad things from trauma and b. my mom taught me about systemic racism in like 4th grade#and we were poor and shit in a rich area so I was excluded a lot#like. inside bo burnham is a good example and I saw a YouTuber talk about this in a really interesting way can't remmeber his name#but he was saying like. there's a certain nihilism of white ppl who end up realizing things are bad when they didn't already#idk interesting topic I can't stop thinking about#bc it's the only way I have to explain how ppl are so godawful stupid and why it's so difficult to explain institutional issues#bc ur basically trying to tell them yeah the world is not actually good. and that's. a really big thing to change in someone's mind#that things are good is the root of a lot of miseducation and support for harmful structures#so much propaganda goes into convincing us that everything is good#and that nihilism that guy talked about. like yeah the world is disgusting but it's more. and that's why like#Angela Davis said it well that the revolution starts inside#and that self love and care and doing good things to a body unwanted by a bad world. that is rebellion that is revolution#so nihilistic white ppl who hate the world are still failing to see the point of counter action#that it's about love + goodness and that's the bedrock#and I find myself stuck there mental illness wise where I believe that you have to emphasize and bolster as much happiness and goodness#but it's fucking hard man#anyway. clearly I took an adderal#gotta take some ethics courses with intersectional lens I have no one to talk about this shit with#Palestine is really fucking me up like. all day I just imagine how many children have died#like what can I do. nothing. i can do nothing. and people who don't deserve it continue to live in terror#the average fucking age in Gaza is 18. they're all just kids like me and my brothers#it's not fair

if they do make another game with botw/totk link and zelda (or just in the same art style as botw/totk) then i hope it takes place entirely outside of hyrule that poor continent has been wrecked enough
#i mean i hope the next game they make is a new incarnation of them because. they alrdy killed this incarnation of ganon now#totk spoilers#but i wouldn't mind a game in the same art style. maybe with the open world aspect a bit more toned down though#i actually like open world decently enough bc i don't play video games often enough to b fatigued with it but#like beginning totk and just being so aware of how much Stuff there is was a bit overwhelming#really depends on how you go about an open world whether itll be satisfying or not. they kinda bungled some aspects of it in totk#particularly w how they tried to integrate the plot with it but blah blah im rambling#i think u can take The Pathless as a good example of a smaller open world that has#a sort of clarity and purpose to it and isnt just cramming shit in every nook and cranny for the sake of Content#while still remaining fun to explore#scampers#sorry every time i think about the pathless i wanna go on a spiel abt how much i love it#i need to get it on switch someday so i can play it again ❤️

also is the thing with the box ever. explained?
#barbie#like from what i remember it was just kinda Ominous Box but there didnt seem to be any signs it wouldnt do what will ferrell said it would#and like you can chelk her bailing at the last second up to her being conflicted about going back to barbieland or not but#the fact that she runs as theyre tightening the twist ties makes it read as more to do with fear of the box itself#and like the ceo's goal was to get her back to barbieland anyways and she was primed to want the same thing at that point#because she'd just gone through the Horrible Real World Experiences wringer so even if it was just based on internal#conflict that wouldnt be the time to do it#i think story wise it wouldve been better to either a) cut the box out entirely‚ b) make the ceo Actually Evil and have the box do#worse than just. be a teleport chamber?#(and yeah ik ik like him and his men chase her down which is upsetting to her but he's not like. maliciously#motivated really? like he wasnt looking to kidnap her and hold her prisoner or smth like. she wanted home‚ he wanted to#send her home‚ and then she bails for no discernable reason other than Thats How The Plot Goes)#or c) have her accept the box and have it work to teleport her home but then have the seeds of doubt that have already started in#her grow organically as she lives a few more days in perfect barbieland and is like Wow Actually This Life Sucks For Me#then have ken come back and do his whole takeover while she's distracted by something#for example thats how you could integrate the mom and daughter back in is have her find out they did send her back and#come out to barbieland to investigate thinking it /was/ against her will#idk the box was just weirdly implemented as a plot device imo#like theres a lot of things in the movie that don't make any sense outside of 'you know‚ like how barbies do?'#which sometimes works and sometimes doesnt

that moment when: everyone's lives are restricted and constricted and these imposed consequences are attributed to anyone's continual individual failures to seek, find, and follow the Correct Path through Life, and so everyone is left on their own to only be seeking & finding these failures as well as the only answer to how their lives can be better....versus Not seeing the world as the free marketplace meritocracy of everyone's personal failures/successes, nor everything in your own life, and thus not forever having to scrutinize Where You Must Be Bringing It Upon Yourself by fucking up or at least failing to do the correct thing, and exist only in perpetual punishment for your ongoing failure and occasional temporary reprieves from it. recognizing everything that wasn't & isn't & wouldn't be [this is because you're bringing it upon yourself] and thus having more capacity & capability to look at the realm of your personal individual self, reality, experiences, life through the perpetual instances of seeking, finding, and following your own needs/wants through one's inherent personhood and exercises of autonomy and recognition of where & when & how one recognizes moments of their existing freely & in more resonant genuine alignment with themself, you know? endless examples to be found in endless fractals of [where & how are people's lives made smaller]. and that of course this doesn't preclude the ability/option at any time to question one's choices, since you'll be able to find more Actual choices available to you (and, also crucially, find more actual choices made by others that are in the pursuit of limiting Yours) to look at, and people getting to exercise their autonomy isn't the same as "everyone doing anything they want regardless of how it affects others" since that [how does it affect others?] element instead being Regarded would be able to lead to recognizing that, in fact, an effect might be the infringement on others' autonomy, hence: There's A Problem....like the ability to just go ham with [questioning???] anything in existence, certainly including oneself, b/c the "norm" is such that rather you're only supposed to be able to question yourself for your failings (or those positioned as less than, thus, beneath you) and not even have the language to express a questioning of aspects of life beyond that b/c stop calling anyone "cis" they're just Normal, Just Be Normal and it would all be fine
#brought to you by: i think one of my feelings lately of A Shift is in my less than ever running this like continuous background function of#looking for Thee Answer (just like the black suits) in any & everything that could serve as the Key to like. whatever could fit into place#to like set things on a [hell yeah. life? better] path. juxtaposing this recent sense of things with the [lol. in retrospect i Do see a new#context wherein i can Recognize smthing abt myself] past going on of like. granpa greentext story be me be fifteen i'm in college b/c i hat#school i also mostly assumed i'd probably fail out freshman yr but didn't. i've never known what i'd wanna major in & as a sophomore i'm de#supposed to figure it out in time for scheduling my jr yr classes (though Ideally have known from the start / been scheduling thusly) & so#many evenings during dinner i'm furiously perusing the daily print news as i've been doing for some yrs to Keep Up W/Current Events but now#also consciously like ''boy i hope in the course of doing this i stumble across some info that sparks some eureka moment of Getting what my#major should Obviously be so i can understand the rest of my life around [do job] b/c i sure as hell don't understand it around [be married#much less [be parent] so one option remains obvi'' whereas now i realize like lol you Were figuring out a guiding light in doing so & that#perspective being honed was one of Having A Political Analysis times....which also provides another Example of [only being able to interpre#what makes your life & your world the way it is: via Your Personal Failures to have already Had Better] in that just like i often forget i#misguidedly (but also reasonably; clearly also using & seeking that autonomy & freedom) tried to have a better existence within the#situation i was in by Coming Out As Trans to parents via an email that was then not directly discussed ever; b/c any legitimate discussion#was not permissible like how so many matters of [supposed correct existence] are Unspeakable so as to be Unquestionable#languaging that succeeds & sustains itself having to be expansive / flexible / creative / evolving too. Making Up Words hell yes#anyways so i also forget i Did try to propose majoring in things that Did more approach what i was suspecting were things i'd wanna do#but even the first like expression of anything on the periphery of that was met with ''no you'd hate it b/c you'd have to deal w/Stupid Ppl#every day'' (by which was meant; with believed inherent synonymity: poor people) & then i also will oft forget i pushed for it any further#which i Know i did b/c of it next being met with angry & aggressive ''i've never heard you talk abt that interest before So''#(wonder why? withholding info to protect yourself=finding room in one's life for existing more freely; exercising the autonomy to Do That)#but it's easy to forget b/c The All Encompassing Perspective was rather [i'm sure Failing to just Know my major for the sole possibility fo#defining one's entire life: The Correct Dream Job] & then Failing to push it or just express it & be understood ''correctly'' even if i Did#have any ideas in that realm. vs seeing how i Was succeeding & was recognizing shit & pursuing it & looking out for myself & etccc#it's undeniable lol like the framing even that Blaming Oneself is an autonomy seeking response. b/c your autonomous power in your own life#sure Would be more immediate if Everything Really Was Your Fault (when ofc really this is abt obscuring & denying the responsibility of ppl#who have the power over others' lives & then have to act like this is all the fault of the Others; they themselves have never Truly Chosen)#no victim blaming no condemnation of anyone's ''passivity'' here babey#re: the undeniability it's how like. maybe you've only Just realized you're not cis but in doing so it's like ''oh That's what i already#recognizing in various ways throughout my whole life'' it's all always Been there/going on & perspex shifts + new lenses can reveal them

Constantly thinking about a conversation me and a buddy had about how people in the modern era always end up making or Headcanoning villains as homophobic or just general bigots...
#No bc I think it’s a very interesting phenomenon#our conversation came down to how people are honestly unable to comprehend a person is horrible unless they’re a bigot#the example we were talking about is how so many ppl headcanon William Afton furnaff was homophobic to make him like. worse#when like. hes already a kiddy murderer. I don’t think he can get any worse than that? he kills kids and is an abusive father#no need for him to also be a bigot but yet it’s a popular headcanon#and my pal said it’s bc a lot of ppl are unable to comprehend villains who are complex and have complex opinions/world views#and tbh YEAH!!! I think it’s really common for us to see villains or just people we don’t like as. unable to be like us#if a person sucks then we cannot have anything in common with them. when that isn’t the case#not everyone person who’s a piece of shit is a bigot. it’s common sure but not every villain is gonna be openly racist or transphobic#if anything a villain who has the same world views as the heroes/protags/audience makes them more complex!!#because it can show that anyone who is considered ‘a good person’ can actually be a pos despite their views or show how a person can fall to#-the dark side lol#and yeah obviously in certain cases a villain being a bigot makes sense and works story wise#I know I have quite a few antagonists who are bigots#but it’s a super common pitfall to just assign an antagonist ‘oh they suck so they also hate autistic people!’ or smth instead of like#just letting their horrible actions show how they’re a horrible person#I promise if a serial killer is a serial killer then like. yeah THEYRE horrible. and if you can only see them as horrible if they’re a bigot#then uh. I don’t know what to say to that!!!!!!#also going back to the complex point I know it’s common for people to not comprehend when a character does something bad and is considered b#-ad in the story unless it is EXPLICITLY spelled out! and I think the bigot stuff ties into that#ppl refuse to be like ‘ohhh this is a villain!’ unless the guy drops a bunch of slurs lol#once again depending on the story a bigoted villain makes sense and I have several bigot Ocs#but sometimes. bad people are progressive. or just aren’t homophobic. sometimes they have the same views as us#and sometimes... that makes them scarier and better written.#IDFK why I shared this rant here I just thought it was interesting and also this is a site where ppl make every villain in media#-homophobic soooo-
