Worth the Wait
I forgot what is was like to hyperfixate on something, so enjoy the overflow of content while it happens! Here's a quick drabble from this morning.
SYNOPSIS: Rowan takes the drive home slowly, careful of the precious cargo in the backseat. WORDCOUNT: 857 WARNINGS: Kids, mentions of labour, Rowan being silly, Fluff
Main Masterlist
Rowan had never driven with such care.
Every corner was gentle, each stop had him slowing down far earlier. His eyes were everywhere, analyzing every car on the road. His grip on the steering wheel was tight, and his body tensed with the leftover adrenaline from the hospital. Nothing slipped his perception.
Especially the cooing in the backseat.
At an intersection, once he had rolled to a slow stop and deemed it safe enough to peer into the rear-view mirror, he took a look at his everything in the backseat.
Aelin was seated in the middle seat, glowing but tired. She was leaning over the newest addition to their small family. Their daughter. Buckled up as securely as possible, she had her mother's eyes watching her every move.
Aelin didn't move under Rowan’s watchful eyes, preferring to stare into her baby’s face. She was exceptionally uncomfortable in this position, her stomach a little sore, and generally feeling a little gross, but it didn't matter because she had this moment. Finally, after months of waiting, they were driving their daughter home with them.
Their beautiful little girl, Evie Rhylie Whitethorn Galathynius.
It was too early to tell, but when she let out the first shrill cry in the delivery room and opened her eyes to the world for the first time, she had light blue eyes. The doctor told them there was a chance that they would deepen to green, and Aelin saw Rowan’s smirk in the corner of her eye when their doctor said that.
It didn't matter to Aelin, as she gently brushed her hand over her daughter’s little tufts of blonde hair, whatever she looked like didn't matter, she’d love her unconditionally anyway.
“I'm so proud of you, fireheart,” Rowan whispered from up front, his voice full of awe.
“Thank you,” Aelin met Rowan’s cloudy eyes in the rear-view mirror and gave him a watery smile to match.
-
Rowan was out of the car immediately when he put it in park, rushing towards the front door to unlock it and push it open, then running back to the car to grab the hospital bag and the surplus of other things from the hospital. Running back to the house to drop those things off, then standing in the front entryway, pleased with himself for the organization.
“Uh, Rowan?” Came Aelin’s voice from outside. “You forgetting something?”
He was confused very briefly, the baby! “Shit. Coming!”
As he rushed back out to where his wife and daughter were in the back of the car, he could hear Aelin’s tired laugh. He felt a hot blush rise to his cheeks, whoops, he thought.
Opening the door, he was met with the tiny human that was his daughter, bundled up in a forest green onesie with a little bear hat, knitted by Auntie Lysandra. She was still fast asleep, tuckered out from all the crying and cuddling she had done earlier.
He unlatched the carrier from its spot in the car, with near-perfect form, having practiced this before the baby’s birth. Lifting Evie gently from the car, and setting the carrier down very gently on the drive, making sure it wasn't going anywhere, before turning back to Aelin in the backseat.
She was smiling brightly. “Sorry.” He mumbled shyly.
“Super-Dad already, don't worry it's very sexy.”
“Super-Dad who forgot his daughter and wife in the car, surefire turn on, huh?” He joked as he let Aelin grab onto his shoulders, grabbing onto her hips to gently help her out of the car. She let out a little ‘oof’ one she was standing, clearly in need of some recovery.
“Super,” Deep breath, “sexy.”
“Okay, enough of that, let's get you to bed.” He said, placing a heavy arm around her waist to stabilize her walk inside, then grabbing the carrier with a gentleness that broke and remade Aelin’s heart.
“Take a girl to dinner first.” Aelin joked as they walked inside.
Rowan snorted. “I think we are a little past that already.” And simultaneously they both looked down at little Evie, who had decided to wake up at that moment, making little gurgling noises and lifting her little arms.
Crossing over the entrance to their house, Rowan couldn't be happier. He was worn out, surviving on shitty hospital coffee and the leftovers of adrenaline from the birth a day and a half ago, but he was happy.
He was a father now. A father to his little Evie, and a husband to Aelin, and it was going to be a sleepless few months, and it was going to be hard, but he was so happy, it was overflowing. He set the carrier down again, let go of Aelin, and turned around to lock the car, then close and lock the front door, before sweeping Aelin into a – gentle – bear-hug, and dropping kisses all over her tired face.
She let out a tired giggle before hugging him back. “I love you, Ro”
“I love you far more, Fireheart.”
Evie, obviously feeling left out, let out a little cry, wanting Mom and Dad’s attention.
“We love you even more, Little Evie.”

"I'm home!" Aelin called, pressing the button to close the garage door as she stepped into the house. She kicked off her heels with a sigh of relief, set down her leather tote, and counted exactly eight seconds before two sets of little arms flung themselves around her legs and waist, two excited little voices squealing for Mama! "Hi, my loves," she laughed, ruffling her children's hair. "Let Mama actually get into the house before you tackle me, alright?"
"Tackle?" Brannon perked up, hearing his favorite word. At ten years old, he was just as sports-minded as all the other boys in his class, and he'd had to learn that if he wanted to tackle, he needed to be outside in the Whitethorn-Galathynius family's expansive backyard.
"Of course that's the only thing you hear," Aelin chuckled to herself. "Not literally, son," she told him. "I'm way too strong for you to tackle."
"Are not!" To prove his point, her son charged, barely able to latch his arms around her waist before she swept him up into her arms, tipped him over her shoulder, and carried him into the playroom.
He shrieked with laughter. "Okay! Okay Mama! You win!"
"That's right, B," she teased, squeezing him in a brief hug. "Hi, my boy. How was school--aaaaaand he's gone." She laughed to herself. "Boys."
"Hi Mama!" Seven-year-old Evie gleefully took Bran's place in Aelin's arms, snuggling herself up close against her mother.
"Hi, lovey," Aelin beamed, holding her younger daughter close. "How was your school day?"
"Good!" Evie's grin was a perfect replica of her mother's. "I got a gold star on my spellin' test, an' I pushed Timmy off the monkey bars!"
Aelin's shoulders shook with mirth. "Evalin, honey, haven't we talked about how you shouldn't push other kids on the playground?"
Evie shrugged. "He said Sana's bow was stupid."
"Hmm." Unable to resist her little mirror image, Aelin winked. "Well, I understand that, then. But next time he says something like that, you need to tell the teacher, okay?"
"Okay." Evie bobbed her curly blonde head. "Wanna see my gold star, Mama?"
"Of course I do!" Aelin let her small daughter lead her back out to the kitchen, where she found her eldest child sitting at the dining table, working on a set of math problems.
Evie tugged her past the table before she could stop and say hello. "C'mon, Mama!" Aelin followed her to the fridge, where her latest spelling test was stuck to the door with magnets. "Look!" Evie pointed proudly to the gold star adorning the top of the page.
"Well done, lovey!" Aelin gave her a high five. "You're way better at spelling than I ever was."
"Really?"
"Yep." She nodded. "Don't tell anyone, but I couldn't spell 'banana' the right way until I was Lana's age."
"And you still can't," Rowan teased, coming up behind her and sliding his arms around her waist. He pressed a kiss to the side of her neck, just below her ear. "Hi, my love."
"Hi." She turned to face him and pressed her lips to his, earning a full set of disgusted noises from the children.
"Ugh, you guys! Gross!" Lana protested, throwing an eraser at Rowan's back. The oldest of the Whitethorn children, she was almost thirteen and growing up far too fast for Aelin and Rowan's liking.
"Just give it a few more years," Aelin whispered into Rowan's ear.
It was her husband's turn to shudder. "Don't remind me," he groaned.
She chuckled. "I won't. Not when you're cooking dinner, at least." Leaving one last kiss on the edge of his jaw, she went back into the dining room and sat down next to her oldest. "Hey, Lana."
"Hi, Mom." Lana was busy with her math homework, pencil scratching against the paper as she worked through a problem. Aelin could tell from the set of her daughter's jaw that she was stuck, so she waited quietly until Lana groaned and tossed her pencil down on the tabletop.
"This is stupid," she grumbled, scowling. "Stupid math. Why can't they just give us equations instead of stupid word problems?"
Aelin retrieved the pencil and placed it next to Lana's math book. "How far did you get?"
Grudgingly, Lana turned her paper so Aelin could see. "I literally don't even know." She pointed to the problem in the book. "I kinda get what it wants me to solve for, but it's not helpful at all with how to solve it."
"That's why it's called a problem, sweetheart." Aelin read the problem over a few times and looked over her daughter's work. "You've got it just about halfway solved, actually."
"No I don't! There's three variables, I only found one!" Lana was on the verge of wailing.
Aelin kept her voice calm. "Do you know how to use a system of equations?"
Slowly, Lana nodded. "Yeah."
"Okay, good. Here." Aelin rewrote the two equations Lana had found using the variable she'd solved for. "Now can you substitute so there's only one variable?"
"Um..." Lana took the pencil back and scribbled. "Yeah! I can." As she grasped the problem, she wrote faster, until she'd solved for the second variable, plugged it into one of the equations, and found the third. "I did it!"
Aelin checked the math and nodded. "You did it!"
Unexpectedly, Lana got up and squished her mother into a hug that was all lanky limbs. "Thanks, Mom."
"You're welcome, sweetheart." Aelin smoothed Lana's messy, light blonde hair and let her go put her math book away, homework done for the night. She went back into the kitchen and took the stack of plates from Rowan's hands. "Let me."
He flashed her a grateful look. "Thanks, babe."
"Ewwwww," Lana grumbled, wrinkling her nose as she passed by.
"There's our almost teen," Rowan chuckled, fondly.
Aelin came over to get silverware. "Stop saying that, it makes me feel old as hell." She pressed her fingertips to his lips before he could make a smart remark about how she was old. "I know, I'm not twenty-two anymore, but neither are you, my love." She smirked. "You've always been old."
"Rude!" Checking to make sure the kids were far out of eyeshot, he flicked the dish towel at her, swiping it across her ass.
She flashed him a wicked grin. "Careful with that, old man. That's how we found ourselves in this situation in the first place."
His face flushed a delightful shade of scarlet and he coughed, choking on whatever he'd been about to say. "I love you so much," he wheezed, regaining his breath.
"I love you more." Silverware set, she slipped into his embrace, wrapping her arms around him and resting her head against his shoulder. "I know we're already married, Ro, but I would marry you again in a heartbeat."
His deep green eyes went soft. "I'd marry you again every day, Fireheart."

rowaelin month day ten
rowaelin month day ten -- single parents. masterlist // buy me a ko-fi // redbubble
The morning truly couldn’t have been going worse. Aelin had woken up to the nanny telling her she’d come down with the stomach flu. Aelin wasn’t cruel enough to tell the poor girl she had to work through it; instead encouraging her to drink as much water as she could and get some much-needed rest. Evangeline had apologized profusely, but Aelin was having none of it. She reassured her that she could figure it out.
It turned out she couldn’t. Her mother and father both worked sixty hours a week. Aelin knew that her mother would take a day if Aelin called, but she couldn’t bring herself to make the call and disrupt her week. Evie’s father had died in a car crash before she was even born. Everyone who was a viable option worked full-time jobs, leaving her three-year-old in her hands. She could call out, but she had a mountain of a workload that she’d left last night, reassuring herself she would get it done today. Everything she needed was at her office, so working from home was out of the question. All signs were pointing to an impromptu “bring your child to work” day.
The CEO of the company was a good friend of hers, and Aelin knew that Dorian wouldn’t mind seeing his goddaughter toddling around the office. In fact, she knew that he would eventually steal her away for a snack time at some point so Aelin could get some work done. It would likely be a snack that wasn’t mommy approved, but she would give him a free pass today.
It would be okay, she reassured herself as she struggled to get Evie to cooperate with getting her tiny arms through her yellow long-sleeved shirt. She was mumbling in an indecipherable language as Aelin nodded along, chiming in here and there like she understood every word. The reality was that she only understood a handful of words. One of them was juice, so Aelin made a mental note to make her a full cup of juice for the car ride to the office to keep her happy.
It didn’t take long to brush her hair into the tiniest pigtails to exist, with two little orange bows holding them in place. By the time she was fully dressed in her fall garb, complete with a tiny gray vest so cute that Aelin wanted to cry, she looked like a baby Gap model. Without a doubt, everyone at the office would be cooing over how precious she looked the second they walked through the door.
“Where going?” Evie inquired, her little head tilting to the side as Aelin packed her go-bag full of snacks and an outfit change just in case.
“Momma’s gotta go to work today, baby. You get to come, too. Do you want to see Uncle Dorian?” At the mention of Dorian, Evie’s eyes lit up as a broad smile pushed her chubby cheeks up until her eyes squinted closed. Aelin grinned and kissed her cheeks until she giggled wildly. Thank the gods that Evie was in a good mood today. Some mornings she woke up on the wrong side of the bed, fussy as all get out while Aelin tried to push along their morning. Thankfully today, she was full of smiles and giggles. It would make everything much easier if she cooperated.
After grabbing a sippy cup full of apple juice and shoving the bottle in her bag, making yet another note to put it in the fridge in the break room when she arrived at the office, she swooped Evie into her arms, and they were on their way.
Upon arriving at the office, Aelin was right. The two receptionists immediately fell in love with Evie’s tiny pigtails and her outfit. They cooed over her bright eyes, twins to Aelin’s own. It took longer than usual to make it to the elevator, where even several men commented on how adorable she was. It brought a smile to her face, but it dropped when she thought of her office neighbor.
Rowan Whitethorn was the hardass of the office. She was pretty positive that he hated her, and there was nothing she could do to change his mind. They spent their days arguing back and forth about anything and everything. Some days she was sure that he only did it to get a rise out of her.
Aelin had never seen him smile-- he only scowled. His assistant was constantly rushing around, losing his damn mind trying to meet all of Rowan’s demands in a day. More than once, she’d caught tidbits of his conversations with Aelin’s own assistant, the poor boy begging to swap just for a single day. Aelin could only imagine what Rowan would say about Evie being such a workplace distraction. She was positive there would be complaints about her squeals and giggles that he would hear through the wall.
There was truly nothing she could do, though. Too much needed to be done at work to take a personal day, and Evie was typically well behaved enough to be occupied until her mom got off work and could pick her up.
As she made her way down the hall, everyone oohed and ahhed over Evie. Aelin thanked everyone for their compliments, her heart spilling over with joy. Until she saw Rowan in the kitchen while she put away the juice. He was making coffee and, upon noticing Evie in her arms, an emotion she couldn’t quite place flickered over his face.
“I didn’t know you had a daughter,” he said, eyes going from her pigtails down to the boots on her tiny feet.
“There’s a lot you don’t know about me.” She closed the fridge door and left the kitchen, gone as quickly as she had come. When she arrived in her office, she shut the door and put Evie down, watching as she ran straight for the couch and flopped over the side with a giggle bubbling out of her lips.
The single mother took a few minutes to take Evie’s toys out of her bag, even laying a few puffy snacks out on the table for her to snack on while she played. She went straight for them as quickly as Aelin sprinkled them out of the container. Aelin chuckled as she watched her for a moment, hands on her hips while she decided she was okay to sit at her desk and begin her work.
Evie was surprisingly self-sufficient while Aelin started her daily tasks. She played with the toys her mother provided and munched on her treats. Aelin heard a lot of babbling and a slew of giggles, a loud squeal pulling her from her work as her door opened.
Dorian leaned in the doorway, giving her a running start until he followed, darting across the room to scoop Evie into his arms. He spun her in circles with her legs flying behind her. She was laughing in a way that she only did with Dorian. Aelin seldom got that sound to come out of her daughter, but somehow, she wouldn’t change it for anything.
“I heard tales of a little princess fighting dragons in my office,” he said to no one in particular, but Evie seemed to understand that she was the princess. If there was anything that she liked in this world, it was being called a princess. She understood that word more than anything because Aelin read her fairy tales of princesses every night. Tangled was constantly on their TV, only to be replaced by Beauty and the Beast. They utterly enchanted her, and everyone in her life was constantly calling her a princess. She loved it.
The giggling continued while he tickled her sides and blew raspberries on her belly until the shrieking got so intense he made a face at Aelin and merely brought her into a tight hug as he said, “Sorry. Nanny out today?”
“She’s got a stomach bug. I had no other options; I’m really sorry.”
“You don’t need to apologize. You know I love any chance I get to see her. I’m not going to penalize you for being a mother, Aelin.” Evie was chomping her teeth near Dorian’s face, causing her best friend to laugh and hold her at arm’s length. “I’ll even take her across the hall for a bit so you can get more done.”
“You’re a lifesaver,” she replied, sighing and leaning back in her seat. Aelin really did have so much to do, to the point that she couldn’t even bring herself to tell him he didn’t have to do that. She would take whatever help she could get.
Her door was left open as he took Evie out into the hall, Aelin noticing that they weren’t going in the direction of his office but rather toward the kitchen. Her eyes rolled as she swiveled in her chair to face her computer and really dive into her work, leaning forward and exhaling a deep breath, willing herself to focus.
Quite a bit of time passed, and she was able to get a considerable amount of work completed. All of her emails had been caught up when Dorian edged into her office and cleared his throat. Aelin looked up, half expecting Evie’s outfit to be ruined by chocolate, but her little ray of sunshine was nowhere to be seen.
“Where is she?”
“I… may have taken a phone call and looked away for two minutes, and she vanished.”
“What?” Aelin was on her feet in an instant, rushing across her office and out into the hall. “What the fuck do you mean? How long has it been?”
“Since I lost her and started looking for her? Half an hour. I was scared to tell you.”
“My daughter has been missing for half an hour, and you’re only just now telling me? What the fuck, Dorian?” She hit his chest rather abrasively as she shoved past him, eyes scanning every room while she ran down the hall. How she was able to do it without toppling over in her heels, she wasn’t sure. All she could feel was the panic from her heart pounding in her chest to the shaking of her hands. The roaring in her ears made everything else sound muffled and distant, like she was standing at the edge of white water rapids. Even with her hands in fists so tight she could feel them shake, nausea building up in her chest.
“Evie?” She called out, a tremor rising in her throat that caused her voice to sound shaky and weak. Tears were pricking in her ears as she turned to run back to her office. She would call down to security to see if they could scan the cameras, and call reception to see if anyone had carried her out. From there, she would--
Her heart stopped beating when she glanced into Rowan’s office. It was the office directly next to hers, and behind his desk, Rowan held a snoozing Evie. Her little fist was gripping the lapels of his suit jacket, and he seemed relaxed while he flipped through papers with one hand.
“What are you doing with my daughter?” Aelin asked, stepping into the door. A few tears of relief slipped down her cheeks, and she was quick to wipe them, lest he make an asshole comment about it.
“I told that little shit to let you know I had her,” he murmured, barely glancing up from his papers. “I think that’s the final straw. He genuinely can’t do the most basic of tasks, I--”
Rowan paused when he looked up from his work. Something soft flashed in his eyes for a split second before he continued, “She was laying on the couch by the kitchen when I found her. She babbled something about Dorian, I think, and when I looked in his office, he was on the phone arguing with someone. You looked busy, and I know you have a lot to do, and when I picked her up, she let out the biggest yawn I’ve ever seen. By the time I’d walked back to my office, she was asleep. I told my assistant to let you know. I’m sorry that he didn’t, and I’m sorry that I didn’t follow up with an e-mail or a phone call. You just seem like you could use the help so you could get work done. I’m sorry.”
Not only was it the most that Rowan had ever said to her in a single conversation, but it was the kindest she’d seen him be to anyone. He wasn’t complaining about the little bit of drool coming out of the side of Evie’s mouth and soaking into his jacket. He was just holding her like he was so at ease with the situation and truly didn’t mind.
“You don’t wear a ring, and I’ve never heard you mention a significant other. Divorced?”
“Widowed,” she replied, sitting in one of the leather chairs in front of his desk. Again, his face softened as he looked down at Evie.
“She looks just like you. She’s beautiful.” Ignoring the implications of that comment, Aelin smiled softly.
“Thank you. She is… everything to me.”
“I… I have a daughter, too. Briar. My wife died two years after we were married. Briar is six now, but Evie is… so much less temperamental than B was.” Aelin tried not to let the shock show on her face. Shock that Rowan Whitethorn was a father and shock that they shared a sad history. The curiosity to ask how she had died was strong, but she wouldn’t ask. Sometimes she hated it when people asked how Sam died. It was like opening a wound all over again.
“Oh, she has her days. Don’t let this fool you,” she laughed, dragging her fingers through her hair. “I didn’t know you had a daughter, either.”
Rowan flipped his computer screen so she could see it, and she was welcomed by a smiling little girl with stunning green eyes and brown ringlet curls. Her heart squeezed at the image, Rowan holding her in his lap and grinning so wide he had dimples. Rowan Whitethorn had dimples.
“She’s absolutely adorable.”
“She is.” Aelin smiled again, looking down at her hands and twisting the ring on her left finger that her parents had given her when Evie was born. It was her birthstone.
“You can keep working if you want to. I’ve got her.”
“She’s not bothering you?” There was hesitation evident in her voice as Rowan looked down at the sleeping girl in his arms. He smiled, brushing a few wild strands of hair back against her head.
“Nope,” he said firmly, looking back at Aelin. “Really. You must have a lot to do if you didn’t just call in a personal day. She’s sleeping. It’s okay. I’ll bring her back when she wakes up.”
“I-- okay. If you’re sure.”
“I’m positive.” Aelin chewed on her fingernail for a moment before she nodded and stood, walking across his office and toward her own. Aelin paused in the door, looking over her shoulder at the man with such a harsh reputation around the workplace. This man seemed entirely different, a man that was brushing his thumb against her daughter's side while she slept with his shirt in her tiny fist. He seemed so utterly relaxed while he adjusted their position in his chair to keep working. It was almost out of character, his offer. But she wasn’t going to complain.
Rowan Whitethorn may have been the hardass of the office, but maybe he had a soft spot after all. @rowaelinscourt

A rogue storm had her presumed dead and stranded on the red planet. Left on her own, astronaut Aelin Galathynius has four years to make it to the next drop-site, some two thousand miles. Armed with her smarts and dwindling supplies, Aelin attempts to survive on an inhospitable planet, when the nearest help is only millions of miles away.

Her question stared at them.
LTN: How’d the crew take it when they found out I was alive?
She typed a new one,
LTN: Are you there?
Sartaq whispered to Gavriel, “She needs to know now.”
Gavriel swallowed, hard, and ignored the fact that his hands were shaking as he replied.
TNSB: We haven’t told the crew you’re alive.
TNSB: We need them to stay focused on the mission.
It took awhile for her to respond and when she did…
LTN: They don’t know I’m alive?
LTN: What the fuck is wrong with you?
LTN: Are you fucking shitting me right now?
LTN: If you are, fuck you, that shit’s not funny.
Uneasy laughter erupted across the room and Gavriel hastily answered.
TNSB: Aelin, please, watch your language
TNSB: This conversation is being broadcasted worldwide
LTN: Oh worldwide, really?
LTN: Worldwide can suck my fucking dick
LTN: I’m stranded on a fucking planet and my crew thinks I’m dead and you want me to watch my language?
LTN: Get fucked

Manon walked into Weylan’s office with Asterin, a look of ‘I told you so’ on her face. He held up a finger and pointed to the phone, speaking into it, “Yes, ma’am. Yes, I agree. She’s under a lot of stress… we understand. We’re dealing with it… Thank you, ma’am.”
He hung up and looked at Manon, “I just had to apologize to the gods-damned prime minister of Terrasen for Aelin’s crass language. What is it?”
“Aelin is right. It’s only going to get worse the longer we wait.”
“You’re only bringing this up because Gavriel’s in Perranth and can’t argue against it,” Weylan commented, a determined set to his jaw.
Manon made a sound of disgust, “I shouldn’t have to clear it with Gavriel or anyone else for that matter, not even you. It’s time, Weylan.”

Lorcan was in the ship’s gym, raising himself to the bar and lowering himself again, sweat running down his body.
He had his earbuds in and the music stopped, Nesryn’s voice coming through, “Commander?”
Dropping to the floor and landing neatly, he grabbed the hand towel and wiped his face, breathing hard, “Go ahead, Faliq.”
“Data dump is almost complete,” she said, referencing the private emails and other things that the crew had been sent.
“Copy. Coming to you.” He entered the zero-gravity corridor, rendezvousing with Fenrys, “You look like you’re in a hurry.”
The man grinned a giddy grin, “Nehemia had her six-month ultrasound yesterday, she said she’d sent the pictures.”
Lorcan smiled easily, he was happy for the couple. “Tell her congrats for me and also send along my condolences.”
Fenrys furrowed his brow as he pushed himself forward using the rungs alongside the walls, “Why condolences?”
“Because it’s probably just set in that she’s having your child,” he laughed and easily evaded Fenrys’ poor attempt to hit him as the rotating craft synthesized gravity and they slid down to the rec room, where everyone had gathered.
Lorcan paused by Elide, where she was sitting curled on a couch with her personal laptop on her lap, to crouch before her and take her hand in both of his, murmuring words too low for the rest of the crew to hear.
Nesryn addressed everyone, “Dump is complete and sending out personals right… now. I don’t need to see Fen’s weird pregnancy fetish shit; I’m scarred for life after the incident.” The incident in question was when Nesryn had accidentally mixed up an email and had opened his and Nehemia’s rather… heated conversation. Rowan huffed a laugh at the memory and everyone shared a look; this was the happiest they’d seen him in the three months since they’d aborted the mission without Aelin.
Fenrys groaned, “I told you, second trimester hormones are a bitch.”
“Whatever does it for you, just keep me out of it,” she said, laughter in her dark eyes, “Oh, huh. There’s a video message from Manon, addressed to the whole crew.”
Everyone made their way over to the computer, crowding around as Nesryn clicked on the video.
Manon’s face appeared on the screen and the video began to play, her voice coming through the speakers, “Lani, this is Manon Blackbeak. I have some news to share, there’s no easy way to put this: Aelin Galathynius is alive.”
The knowledge hit the crew like a freight train at full speed and they remained in shock as the message continued, “We know that’s a big surprise and you’ll have a lot of questions but as for the basics: she’s healthy and alive. We found out two months ago and I was ordered not to tell you. We’re telling you now because we have reliable communication with her and a rescue plan. We’ll send you a full write-up of what happened but know that this is not your fault. Aelin has heavily stressed this: it is not your fault. Take time to absorb this, your schedules have been cleared for the next two days. Send all your questions and we’ll answer them. Blackbeak out.”
“She’s…she’s alive?” Elide whispered, voice barely heard.
Fenrys was the first to crack, a slow smile spreading across his face, relief in his eyes, “G-Money lives.”
Nesryn and Elide both huffed laughs and the latter wiped her eyes, shaking their heads. “She’s alive,” Nesryn confirmed, a ghost of a smile on her face.
They all turned to Rowan, his façade slipping enough that there was an upwards tilt to the corners of his mouth. “Holy shit.” The doctor turned to Lorcan, who had remained silent, “Lor?”
“I left her behind.”
Fenrys shook his head decidedly, “We all left, L. All of us.”
The stone-faced commander clenched his jaw, his brow furrowing, “You were following orders.” His eyes shattered and when Elide reached for his hand, he shifted, keeping his gaze on the computer screen. “I left her.”
The group traded glances, not sure what to say. Elide rested her hand on his bicep and without another word, he shook off her hold and exited the room.

Nesryn wasn’t paying attention and her wife could tell. The green-eyed beauty paused in her retelling of their teenaged daughter’s, Evangeline, first date. “Nes?”
“Hmm?”
Lysandra chuckled, “You still there?”
“Oh,” Nesryn sat up straighter and smiled sheepishly at Lysandra, nodding, “yeah, it’s just… been a long day. Weird day too.”
Her wife tilted her head to the side, her brilliant eyes missing nothing, “You okay? Want to talk about it?”
“Not really,” she said, her smile growing as a redheaded girl popped her head upside down in the frame, her citrine eyes pressed up against the camera.
“Mama!” Evangeline sat down on the couch next to Lysandra, the fifteen-year-old wearing Nesryn’s TNSB hoodie, the scarred-over slashes on her cheeks stretching as she grinned. She pressed her hand against the screen and Nesryn copied the motion, her eyes watering.
“Hi, my darling,” she whispered, “how are you?”
“I’m good. I miss you, Ma,” she pouted, but soon enough her lips pulled into that brilliant smile of hers again, “I can’t wait to see you.”
“I miss the both of you so much and I can’t wait to see you either,” Nesryn replied, the sight of her family so happy and healthy mending her heart, even if it was just a bit. “Evie, your mother tells me you went on a date?”
Lysandra and Nesryn laughed as their daughter’s cheeks went bright red, her scars stark white against her flushed skin. “…maybe.”
“Tell me all about it.”
“Are you sure? It was a boy,” Evangeline said, a wrinkle to her button nose.
Nesryn faked a gagging sound and inhaled deeply, “I think I can handle it.”
The joyful chatter of their daughter soon spilled from the speakers and Nesryn gave her wife a soft look, mouthing I love you as she let the perfectness of her two favourite people in the world wash over her and strip away the day’s events.

When Lorcan didn’t return for the rest of the night, the sadness that had erupted in Elide’s chest turned to anger and she sought him out, finding him in his bunk, staring at nothing.
He didn’t acknowledge her as she climbed up so she did what any sensible person would do.
She jabbed him in the side with her index and middle finger, finding the soft flesh beneath his ribcage, glaring at him when he cried out in shock and pain. He met her angered gaze with one of his own, irritation rippling in his dark irises beneath lowered brows.
Elide shook her head, “Don’t know why the fuck you’re pissy with me now.”
He sighed, “What do you want?”
She raised a brow, tilting her head to the side and tracking his face with watchful eyes. “You’re being a dick and I’m not putting up with it so…” she made to leave, blinking back tears, but his hand shot out and wrapped around hers.
“Don’t go, I’m sorry,” he said, tugging her back into his lap. The bunk was already a tight fit for Lorcan, who at six-foot-four and two-hundred and ten pounds was at the maximum size restrictions to be an astronaut, so with Elide as well, it became even smaller. “I’m sorry.”
“You keep saying that,” she murmured, twisting to straddle his lap and brush his hair back from his eyes. “Why do you keep saying that?”
“Because I left the woman my brother loves on a planet, with practically no way to survive. Fuck,” he muttered, closing his eyes and leaning his head against the wall. “I don’t- I love you so much. I can barely breathe right without knowing you’re safe and I… I can’t help feeling guilty for condemning her to death. El.” He opened his eyes and flicked his gaze down to her necklace, where his dog tags laid between her breasts. The weight of her mother’s wedding band hanging on his own necklace had never felt more pronounced. “She might die, alright? And if she does, it will be my fault and I just… I can’t live with the knowledge of breaking Rowan’s heart like that.”
He took a deep breath, not used to speaking that much all at once. Elide offered him a gentle smile and framed his face with her hands, her eyes searching his, “I love you so much. Right now, Ae is alive and healthy, ok? That’s all we need to think about right now. If she dies, it will never be your fault and yes, it will hurt so much – more than anything. If she dies, the whole crew will be broken. We’ll be there for each other and for Ro, too.” She pressed her lips to his, kissing him so softly, it was heartbreaking. “Ok?”
All Lorcan could do was cup the back of her head and kiss her harder, selfishly thanking every god that it wasn’t Elide in Aelin’s place.

Deep in the Heart of Texas - One
a/n: So, because I have zero self control, I went and wrote the first chapter of the ToG southern AU I was talking about. I did this instead of doing online school, so I’d appreciate some feedback! I’ll probably continue this, but you know, support is nice. I think it’s also important to note that Aelin would absolutely rock a southern accent. So would Aedion. It would be so hot. Just... imagine it.
Summary: Aelin Galathynius is ready for the best summer of her life. She’s home from college for the summer, and so are all of her friends. Even her cousin is on a break from the military. Everything is set up to be perfect. Until... her mother decides to let the son of an old family friend stay with them while he grieves the loss of a loved one. And Aelin is not going to let a party pooper ruin her summer.
Rowan Whitethorn has just suffered the biggest loss of his life: the death of his long-time girlfriend, Lyria. His family is sick of him moping around his tiny New York apartment, so they ship him down south for the summer. The last thing Rowan wants is to spend his vacation in Nowhereville, Texas, but he has little choice. Not to mention, the only people his age seem to hate him. How on earth is he going to survive 3 months of this?
Aelin Ashryver Galathynius is living the high life. She’s sitting in a chair outside in her backyard, beer in one hand, barbeque in the other. Her dog, Fleetfoot, is perched at her feet, just waiting for some scraps.
“So, little cuz,” Aedion says, sitting beside her. He reaches over to grab one of the ribs from her plate, but Aelin quickly slaps him away. “How was your junior year at A&M?”
“Pretty good.” Aelin concedes. She finishes off the rib she was eating and passes the bone to Fleetfoot, who immediately jumps to gnaw on it.
“How about you two?” Aedion addresses Aelin’s best friends and roommates, Lysandra and Elide.
“At least you two only have one more year.” Lysandra groans. “Next year I have to focus on getting into vet school.”
“You’ll make it, Lys.” Aelin assures her. “You’re the smartest person I know.”
“I still have to get into medical school.” Yrene sighs from her own seat. “And Nehemia, you’ve got to get into law school.” Their other friend nods and rolls her eyes.
“And this is why I’m just getting a business degree.” Aelin chuckles. “Four years and I’m out.”
It’s so good to see her friends again. They’ve known each other since high school, but only Lys and Elide stayed back home in Texas for school. Nehemia got accepted into Harvard, which they all saw coming. Yrene managed to get herself all the way up to Washington State. As for Ansel and Nesryn, they moved out too, scholarships taking them far, far away.
Aelin missed her friends. It’s so good to have them back. And Aedion, too. By some miracle or another, he’s managed to have a break over the summer. His next deployment isn’t until September.
When Aelin pulls herself from her thoughts, her plate of ribs is noticeably smaller. And her cousin has the tell-tale stain of barbeque sauce on his chin.
“You prick.” Aelin sighs.
“You weren’t eating them!” Aedion laughs. “I’m not letting good barbeque go to waste.”
Aelin, being the mature adult she is, just sticks her tongue out at her cousin until he laughs so hard he chokes. She stands up and takes her plate, smacking him on the back as she does. Aedion just glares.
“I need more food. Any of y’all coming with?” Nehemia and Yrene take their plates and follow Aelin up to the long table where the food is being served.
Aelin’s parents are sitting in camp chairs nearby, laughing. Evalin has a margarita in hand, while Rhoe’s got a beer. When they approach, suddenly all three girls find themselves pulled into a conversation.
“Are y’all having fun?” Evalin asks, smiling.
“Definitely.” Nehemia laughs, ever the polite one. “Thank you so much for inviting us, Mrs. Galathynius.”
“Oh, of course.” Evalin gushes. “I couldn’t just throw a welcome home party for my daughter without inviting all her friends, now could I?”
Aelin attempts to shrug off her mother, but it’s no use. Evalin Galathynius has perfected her Southern charm, and of course Nehemia and Yrene are defenseless against it.
So her friends and mother chat, about life, college, relationships. Evalin even gets Yrene to confess she’s been keeping a long-distance boyfriend, and Aelin is pissed that her friend didn’t tell her first.
But she gets more food; barbeque, mostly, but she heaps some beans and a roll on as well.
“Save some room for banana pudding!” Her mother warns.
“Mom, I will always have room for banana pudding.” Aelin grins. Finally realizing that they don’t have any food on their plate, Nehemia and Yrene pull themselves away and pile their plates high.
By the time they get back to their group of chairs, Aedion has managed to down two whole beers. Ansel and Lysandra are arguing, (or flirting, Aelin can never tell), and Elide is scratching Fleetfoot’s ears as the dog chews on another rib bone.
“Mom’s bringing out the desserts soon.” Aelin alerts her friends. Lys perks up at her words, glancing back towards the house, where all the food is.
“Please tell me she made banana pudding.” Elide groans. “I haven’t eaten it in like, years. Your mom always made the best.”
“Okay, but your mom makes really good butter cake.” Aelin laughs. “I mean, it’s got enough fat to give you diabetes with one slice, but that’s a problem for another day.”
“Mom didn’t make any for the party, though.” Elide pouts.
Before Aelin can respond, three kids crash into their circle, laughing wildly. It’s Evangeline, Lysandra’s little sister, along with Hollin and Terrin, the younger brothers of Dorian and Chaol. Who, for the record, Aelin didn’t know were invited.
“Sorry!” Evie chirps. She stands up again and runs off, the younger boys chasing after her. Fleetfoot, done with her bone, jumps up and dashes after them with a bark.
Lys just rolls her eyes. “Kids.”
Beside her, Nesryn nods in agreement. “Kids.” Aelin spots Nesryn’s older sister, Delara, with the rest of her very large family. Delara has a baby on her hip, while the other three helions run circles around their mother’s feet. Nesryn’s younger cousins soon join in, creating a whirlwind of small children. Aelin has to look away; they’re making her dizzy.
This time Nehemia joins in, a huff of laughter on her lips. “Kids.” She points to her two little brothers, antagonizing Rhoe Galathynius by the house, likely begging for dessert to come out sooner.
“Well, as nice as this is, I don’t have any siblings, so I cannot relate. Sorry to burst your bubble.” Aelin’s comment gets a laugh from all around their circle, and soon everyone is back to eating food.
“Look! The pudding’s out!” Aedion shouts, and all the college-aged kids drop everything and sprint to the house, shoving each other out of the way. Nobody is getting between Aelin and her banana pudding.
“Hey! Slow your roll!” Evalin scolds. “There’s enough pudding for everyone. As long as you only take a small scoop. Aedion, I’m talking to you.” She fixes her nephew with a stare, and Aedion winces.
“Yes ma’am.” They all chorus. Satisfied with their manners, Evalin serves them all dessert.
She’s in the middle of scooping out Aelin’s portion when Rhoe appears, holding her phone. “Honey, someone’s calling.”
“I know how to use a phone, Rhoe.” Evalin sighs. She scoops Aelin a little bit more pudding and then takes her phone, letting her husband go on dessert-serving duty.
Aelin links arms with Elide, the two of them grinning madly before plopping down right there, next to the dessert, digging in with their spoons.
The rest of their friends are soon to follow, and Aelin doesn’t miss how Lysandra chooses to sit a little bit closer to Aedion than is probably socially acceptable.
She chooses to ignore it, however, and instead focuses on interrogating Yrene.
“How long have you had a secret boyfriend for?” She demands.
“When I came home for Christmas.” Yrene laughs. “We went to the Havilliards’ party and I met him there.
The Havilliards, some of the most prominent people in their little cluster of small towns, have a reputation to battle even the Galathyniuses. And the Ytgers, for that matter. Their parties attract attention from all over, which was how Aelin’s friend group met each other.
Aelin and Elide had grown up practically as sisters, though Elide lived one school district over, in the neighboring town of Perranth. Orynth was the largest city in their area of South Texas, holding a whopping 10,000 people.
That was whopping to Aelin, at least. Elide’s town, Perranth, had around 8,000, with Rifthold nearby being 9,000. All the other towns that their friends lived in had even less than that, the smallest being Caraverre, Lysandra’s town, with barely 1,000 people.
The Havilliards, being the socialites of tiny Rifthold, have parties all the damn time. They even let their eldest son, Dorian, host wild gatherings of drunken teenagers.
Aelin and Elide, barely seventeen, had managed to sneak into one of these elusive parties. They’d met Lys, Nesryn, Ansel, Nehemia, and Yrene, although the last girl was only there because her friends dragged her there and then abandoned her. Some friends, they were.
“Okay, that doesn’t give us any clue as to who he is.” Lys points out, pointing her spoon at Yrene. “Everyone and their cousin goes to the Havilliards’ parties.”
“Chaol Westfall.” Yrene giggles. Aelin nearly spits out her banana pudding.
“Him?!” She yelps. Yrene’s laughter turns hysterical.
“Yes! Chaol Westfall is my boyfriend.”
“He’s here, though.” Ansel adds. “Why aren’t you over there with him?”
“Because I missed y’all.” Yrene says. “I haven’t seen y’all since summer last year. None of you came home for Christmas.”
“Too busy.” Aelin, Elide, and Lysandra say in unison. Yrene rolls her eyes.
Other people come for dessert, and Aelin scoots away as one of Nesryn’s nieces tries to peek over her shoulder. Delara scolds her and drags her away, and the whole group bursts into laughter.
Aelin looks up, seeing her father still serving. That’s strange, where is Evalin?
She sees her mother, standing on the porch of the house, hand over her mouth. Something’s wrong. Evalin’s porcelain face is ashen, the color drained from her cheeks. Aelin thinks she can see tears.
Before anyone can ask what she’s looking at, Aelin’s jumping up and rushing to her mother, bounding up the steps two at a time. She nearly crashes into her uncle’s rocking chair, but stops at the last second. Evalin hardly looks up.
“Of course. Of course he can stay here. For as long as he needs. Yes, please, send him my love. I’m so sorry.” Aelin catches Evalin’s eye, who holds up a finger, gesturing for her to wait.
When she finally hangs up, she just lets out a long sigh, putting the phone on the porch railing.
“Do you remember the Whitethorns, Aelin?”
The question catches her off guard, but Aelin nods, anyway. “I do. Sellene and Enda, mostly. And… there was another one, right?”
Evalin just hangs her head. “Yes. Rowan, that’s the other one. Poor boy, his girlfriend just died in a car accident.”
Now it’s Aelin’s turn to put her hands to her mouth. “Oh Lord.” She hardly remembers the Whitethorns, just that she met them a few times when she was young. She remembers that Enda and Sellene were nice and would play with her, while Rowan hung back, always saying mean things to her. She remembers Aedion beating him up one time, too.
Still, just because he was rude to five-year-old Aelin doesn’t mean he deserved this tragedy.
“If you call Mrs. Whitethorn again, please tell her I’m so sorry for their loss.” Poor Rowan.
“Well, here’s the thing, Aelin.” At Evalin’s tone of voice, Aelin knows she’s about to say something she won’t like. “Mrs. Whitethorn is very worried for him. They’re so busy up there, you know, they don’t always have time to check in on him. So… she asked if we would let Rowan stay down here for a bit.”
“Mama!” Aelin sighs. “I feel bad for the guy, but that doesn’t mean he has to come and live with us! All of my friends are down here! I don’t want him ruining my summer vacation.”
“Don’t you start sassin’ me, young lady.” Evalin snaps, her accent coming out in full force. “How can you be so heartless? Rowan is grieving.”
Aelin feels like a kid again, getting sent to her room for giving her mother attitude. So she relents before she gets embarrassed in front of the entire town of Orynth. And then some.
But she’s in a pissy mood, now. Of course she feels bad for him, but not that bad. Not bad enough to let him stay in her house over the summer. For all she knows, Aedion could be deployed all next summer. Lysandra might not be able to come home, being to busy getting ready for vet school. This could very well be their last summer together.
And Aelin Galathynius will not let Rowan Whitethorn ruin her summer.
~~~~
Rowan Whitethorn steps out of the Uber, taking in the sight of the small town. He’s flown into Houston, Texas from Doranelle, New York, and it’s cost him a stupid amount of money to get a car to take him all the way down here. They don’t even have taxis in this god-forsaken state.
Though, to be fair, it’s partially his own fault. His flight had gotten moved up, and he’d forgotten to text Evalin Galathynius the new time after she insisted she’d pick him up from the airport.
As the Uber pulls away, Rowan takes a long minute to glance around. He’d seen the sign as they’d driven in, had nearly felt his eyes bulge out of his head when he saw ‘Population: 10,000’.
He fingers the strap of his backpack, taking in the scenery. He’s in what must be a public park, but why anyone is outside is beyond him. It is so fucking hot outside.
However, the park is full. A pair of mothers with strollers, chatting as they walk along the park trail. Kids play on a playground in the distance. And a couple, seated at one of the picnic tables, have their hands clasped.
Rowan looks away at that.
There wasn’t any place he could go, or that his parents could ship him off to, where he could just forget about Lyria. She’d been the love of his life. When he had a bit more money saved up he was going to ask her to marry him. He wanted to start a family with her.
And it seems like she haunts him, because no matter where he looks there is something that reminds him of her.
Rowan sighs deeply, starting to walk. He needs to be away from this place, with so many… people. And he needs to get inside somewhere, away from the oppressive heat. How anybody manages to live in this weather is beyond him, being born and raised in New York.
He observes the town as he walks, taking in the architecture, the style. It looks fairly modern, save for the houses. The houses all look like miniature versions of that house from Gone with the Wind. The movie, of course. He didn’t bother to pick up the book.
This tiny town seems as if it’s been permanently frozen in time… in the Civil War era.
Rowan goes back to walking, searching for a store or something where he can step inside for a minute, pull out his phone, and turn on Google Maps. However, as he approaches the little chain of shops, he’s stopped by a slightly older woman.
“Are you visiting someone, dear?” She asks, smiling broadly.
“Uh, yeah.” He replies awkwardly. Why is she talking to him? Back in New York, it’s pretty much every man for himself. You find your own way or you don’t. Nobody ever offers help.
“Where are you headed?” She’s still smiling, and that puts Rowan on edge.
“Um, I’m looking for… Evalin Galathynius? Do you know her?”
The woman’s face lights up. “Oh, yes, I know her. You’re gonna want to walk down that street right there, then take a left at the blue house, keep going until you reach the small park, then-”
Rowan doesn’t know what to say. Her instructions drone on, and he just can’t pay attention that long. He’ll just take out his phone when the lady leaves.
“You got all that, sweetie?” Rowan jolts back to the present.
“Yeah, thanks.” She smiles, and keeps walking. Rowan lets out a sigh, and pulls out his phone, plugging in the address to Google Maps.
Fifteen minutes of walking. Rowan looks up, at the sun beating down on him. This is going to suck, isn’t it?
~~~~
Rowan holds a scowl as he finally makes it to the Galathynius house. Carrying both a backpack and dragging along a suitcase in the sweltering Texas heat is not doing good things for him.
He’d also gotten lost multiple times, even with the help of Google Maps, meaning he’d nearly doubled his walking time. All he wants to do now is to go inside somewhere they have some goddamn air conditioning.
Rowan drags his suitcase up the porch steps, nearly panting. He’d sweated through his shirt, which had only added to the awful heat.
There isn’t a doorbell; or not one he can see, anyway, so he knocks on the front door, hard.
He hears a muffled “I’ll get it!” before the door swings open to reveal a young woman, golden hair tied up in a messy bun.
Her expression turns suddenly sour as she takes him in, her turquoise eyes glaring. “Are you Rowan?”
“Yeah.” He says. “Sorry I didn’t let you know, but my flight got pushed up.”
“That’s what I thought. You weren't supposed to get here until this evening.” She sighs and opens the door. “Come inside.”
Rowan does so gladly, smiling as the cool air kissed his sticky skin. “Is your mom home? You look too young to be Mrs. Galathynius.”
“My name is Aelin.” She says. She doesn’t offer her hand to shake, just keeps walking further inside. “Do you want me to show you your room?”
“Sure.” Rowan follows Aelin through the house, marvelling at how… large it is. And, he’d noticed as he’d approached, it was on a massive piece of land, as well.
Aelin walks quickly through the house, pointing out a few things like the kitchen, dining room, living room. They come upon a large staircase, and she bounds up them. Rowan sighs and goes to dragging his suitcase upstairs.
Aelin even has the audacity to look annoyed at him for being so slow. Rowan resists the urge to snap at her. He’s exhausted, and just wants to lay down somewhere and sleep.
Aelin leads him down a long hallway, and points to one of the doors. “That’s your room. And the bathroom’s right there.” She gestures to another door across the hall. “All the other rooms are occupied right now, so no snooping.”
Rowan doesn’t answer, just nods. Stepping inside the room, he can’t help but notice how big it is. Just like this entire house, it’s giant. He’s got a four-poster bed, plush carpet on the floor, a dresser, and a closet. It’s more luxurious than anything he’s ever had.
He doesn’t bother to unload his stuff. Sleep is pulling at him, making his eyes heavy. So he quickly pulls off his sweaty shirt and collapses on the bed, sinking into the mattress.
He’s gone quickly, but right before he falls asleep, one last thought materializes in his head.
Lyria would have loved it here.

Lost in Space 09
Hello, Isolans! We have conducted an activity check for the month of May!
If your character isn’t on this list, make sure to check this page to see how many stars that character has earned this month! Stars can be used for purchases at the marketplace.
The blogs that were removed from the Isola Radiale masterlist are under the cut. Note that both blogs with broken links and deactivated accounts will be included both at the top of this list and in their proper categories.
If you were removed in error, please simply send a re-application message. Several different people work on the activity checks, so it’s possible there are mistakes! If this happens to you, you will be able to keep everything you previously had, you just may be placed in a different residence.
Our general activity rules regarding checks are as follows:
Make at least three in-character posts during a calendar month.
Only one drabble and/or meme response of 300+ words counts as activity.
One-liners or minis not tagged #isola mini also do not count.
Please Note: If you are removed during two consecutive activity checks, you will not be allowed to re-apply as that character for two calendar months.
Additionally, anyone removed during the activity check will have a 12-hour window from the time of posting to re-claim their character. Any character not reclaimed during that period will be open to the community at large.

So my problem with Nesta. Not as a person, as a written character
I've seen some damages characters. I've seen some characters dealing with shit in an unhealthy way. I've seen some characters dealing with things by self destrucring and hurting others.
Remus Lupin, Katnis Everdeen, Paige Mahoney, Aelin Galathynius, Evie O'Neal, Jace Lightwood, Kaz Brekker... Honestly I can go on and on with this one and this was just me skimming the surface of YA. I didn't go into comics or other generes of literature.
But you know what these people have in common? We (the readers) were given a reason to like them before they broke. We were given a solid, it at least A reason to forgive their actions and know that this is just trauma speaking. We knew it wasn't normal behaviour because we've seen that they have the capacity to be (while maybe not good people) people we could root for.
Kaz is the only exception. I will get to him in a second.
Nesta?
Nesta has been nasty from day 1. Before the trauma, before she was made. She cared for Elaine and that was her only redeeming quality. Yes she was clever, but I'm sorry but for me, personally, this is not a good enough reason to like a character. She said she was gonna leave and see what she can do in the world but in the next book we found her exactly where we left her- Sulky and rude and thinks everyone and their sister owe her something.
Which bring me to my other problem.
Nesta is said to be a fighter, to have grown up in the same ruin as Feyre. And yet? She constantly demands stuff from the people around her. She claims she wants to be left alone but Honestly? If it wasn't for all the people in her like constantly supporting her she would be dead a million times over.
People compare Nesta to Kaz, and i can see why. They are both clever, selfish, damaged, and cold. But Kaz has one thing that Nesta doesn't- he is an active character. We never see Kaz just sit around and wait for things to happen to him or be handed to him- you break his leg, he gets a cane and breaks bones with it, you steal everything he has in his life- you better watch your back because the only way you are keeping him from getting revenge is by killing him (and even then I don't trust him to stay dead). Nesta has hell to pay to her enemies but she was content to just sit on her ass and do nothing. You expect me to believe this is a woman with no limits to what she can do?
I hope these are all facts she comes to terms with during ACOTAR4 (or is it 5?) Cuz Honestly, I need to see some serious growth from her. I am not saying that she needs to apologies (while it might be nice, it could be to ooc for her) but I need to see that she UNDERSTANDS.
So yeah.

rowaelin month day nineteen
masterlist // kofi // redbubble // etsy
Queen Aelin Galathynius was perched in bed, one hand resting on her swollen belly and the other mindlessly combing through her daughter’s hair. Evie was curled up against her side, stumbling over some of the words she was reading aloud to her mother. It was the longest book she had tackled yet, a little more involved than the children’s stories she had been reading lately. But the stubborn little thing had begged to read it after Aelin said it was a favorite of her own when she was near Evalin’s age, and some days she was worse at telling her no than Rowan was.
Aelin glanced at the clock on the mantle across the room, taking a deep breath before tugging lightly on one of her daughter's wavy locks. Evalin scowled at her mother, the expression so much like Aelin’s it almost took her breath away for a moment. Instead, she smiled.
“My little princess.”
“Mummy.” Aelin’s grin widened.
“I need your help with something.” The eight year old sat ramrod straight, tossing her golden hair over her shoulders as she folded her hands in her lap. A Princess taking orders from her Queen. Things like these delighted Evie, she was such a helper. Aelin knew that when the new baby came along that Evalin would be the picture perfect big sister.
“Can you go find Papa and tell him that I really want those hazelnut truffles from the bakery just down from the gates? You could go together. You know Marjorie always gives you an extra treat when you come in.” Aelin really could have said less, because by the time she suggested that Evalin go along with her father, she was already scrambling off the bed and bolting for the door, chased down the hall by her mother’s bright laughter.
~*~
The Queen sat at the head of the table, several of her advisors and most of her court sitting in their designated seats. Aedion was to her right, the other end of the table left open for Rowan.
Aelin heard him coming down the hall before the door swung open, her mate leaning against the door frame with three boxes balanced in his hand. She smiled, reaching her hands for them. He sent them over on a carefully balanced wind, but when she caught them, ice bit at her fingers. He was mad.
Just this morning, after a night of clutching the toilet and hurling her guts up, Rowan had made her promise to stay in bed. The baby wasn’t agreeing with anything that she did in the last twenty four hours. Since yesterday she had been cold and clammy, but hot at the same time. That led Rowan to being grumpy and fussy. By gracing her court with her presence in this meeting, she was breaking that promise.
“Good. Now we can start,” she said, opening one of the boxes. Aelin peeled back the tissue paper and plucked one of her chocolates and popped it into her mouth. Rowan was still scowling as he took his seat at the table.
~*~
Aelin had stopped listening to the court chatter some time ago. Half an hour or so, if she were to guess. Breathing had become difficult with much thanks to the babe’s foot that was currently lodged in her rib cage. With clammy skin and shaky hands, she tried to focus on the words everyone spoke to no avail. The nausea was yawning awake in waves and she had to keep her eyes focused on a single word on the reports before her to keep the room from spinning. She’d made the mistake of closing her eyes briefly and it had been difficult to choke the vomit back that tried to creep up the back of her throat. Aelin blamed the baby. It wouldn’t stop kicking and nudging her internal organs.
Rowan must have scented it, because he slammed the leather bound papers before him shut and promptly declared the meeting over. “We’ll reconvene tomorrow. You’re all dismissed.”
Lorcan had been mid sentence, but no one objected as they left the room. Aelin didn’t even object, not bothering with claims she was fine to keep it all going. She wasn’t fine, and while still grappling with not putting on a mask even fifty years later, she let Rowan have this one.
Her husband scooped her into his arms and she didn’t complain about that either. She merely tucked her face into his neck and inhaled the scent of pine and snow. It was comforting still, after so many decades. Aelin didn’t think it would ever stop being the most comforting thing to her. Nothing soothed her mind and soul like his scent did— even if she could feel how tense he was beneath everything else.
Rowan said nothing as he tucked her into their bed, Aelin whining as he pulled away. “I’ll be right back, love.”
Only then did she release his tunic and roll onto her side, facing his side of the bed. It was only seconds that he was gone, returning with a glass of chilled water. Aelin lifted her head to take a few sips, only as much as she could handle, then laid her head back on the fluffy pillow beneath her head.
Rowan laid beside her and she hummed as she cuddled up to him, whispering a soft, “I’m sorry.”
“Will you listen next time?”
“Probably not.” It was more of a promise than anything, earning a quiet chuckle from her mate. Rowan’s hand began roaming soothing circles over her belly, the baby ceasing it’s movements at the comforting touch of its father. Rowan swore this one was a boy based on scent alone. Aelin tended to agree. He was seldom wrong about anything.
Rowan’s lips found her hair, pressing sweet and soft pecks to the top of her head. Not one to miss out on a single kiss, Aelin tilted her head back to welcome one to her mouth. He obliged her, his wife accepting several before settling her head on his chest and drifting off to a deep and restful sleep.

"yeah, it's a little uncanny." evie was sure it was just a coincidence, but she figured she should at least exhaust the idea before completely writing it off. however, as they explained, evangeline's eyes are blown wide. aelin's parents were dead, they-- evie didn't know the full story, but she knew that. "you're aelin galathynius' mom?" evie paused. "oh, shit, i'm sorry--" and, despite so many years in the city, in the modern world, how to meet royalty was still ingrained in her, and she quickly dropped into a curtsey. "it's an honor to meet you, your highness."
"I look like your aunt?" they asked, brows raised, a soft smile on their face. as soon as the name aelin was mentioned, evalin turned to look at the other. "yes, it does," they nodded. "aelin is the name of my daughter." maybe the other meant that their aunt was their aelin, evalin wondered if it was.
