Eve teasing is closely related to the patriarchal mindset of the Indian male!

Men are raised to believe that they are more powerful physically and emotionally than women. They feel that they are doing nothing wrong by having "some fun".

In India, eve teasing affects every woman who dares to come out of her home, in some form or the other. It can be noticed in all places like beaches, roads, cinema halls, buses, and even in Educational institutions.

Teachers of psychology and social scientists believe eve teasing to be a result of the frustrations suffered by a majority of youth. They yearn for an outlet to VENT their aggression and depression.

It may appear paradoxical that in a country like India where the mother is generally deified, the growing male child does not learn to respect the members of his mother's gender.

But it is because of this deification that the boy finds it easy to slip into the patriarchal mode, for he does not relate to his mother as a woman, but as a helpless and martyred dependent who needs to be pitied and cared for.

All we can say is being a woman has its own challenges, let’s make this society a better and safer place for them to live in!

I honestly haven't seen much #SexualHarassment or #EveTeasing in public and I always wondered how I would react. So few days back while coming back with my family I saw a girl with a backpack on, donning Hijab and perfectly minding her own business walking down a road where all of sudden these two boys on motorbike decide to get very close and suspiciously slow. I just as a gut feeling decided to slow down further and notice what's going on. It was only after I honked them a horn that they picked up pace and then shamelessly looked at me with a face "hey what has happened?" I would have most probably acted little more confrontational if I wasn't with my family but it is highly unfortunate what weaker gender has to go through, which very often is female. I have though just this week come across case of a young graduate in an interview who left his last job due to sexual harassment. In any case if you see something, do something about it. And best of all teach your kids better. Bid to combat drugs, eve-teasing

KUWAIT CITY, Feb 23: The Negative Phenomena Committee held a meeting yesterday, to discuss a proposal which has been submitted by the committee members calling on the Council of Ministers to establish a joint committee comprising members from all relevant government agencies to combat the negative phenomena in society, such as drugs, community violence, harassment of the fair sex, reports Al-Seyassah daily.

The meeting said the public benefit associations and specialists must be called upon to study the causes, implications, motives of such phenomenon and how this phenomenon should be treated.

The head of the committee, MP Badr Al- Dhahoum, said the issue was discussed in the presence of the concerned authorities – the ministries of Interior, Social Affairs, Health, Awqaf and the General Administration of Customs.

All those present during the meeting have agreed on the importance of the committee to discuss the causes of the phenomena, foremost among which are drugs.

Eve teasing includes vulgar gestures, sexual remarks, winking, whistling, staring, touching inappropriately, groping, etc.

What's the saddest part?

Many people feel that the 'eve' in eve teasing refers to the woman herself tempting the male to make disparaging remarks and behavior toward her.

But, fortunately, the Criminal Amendment Act of 2013 amended the Indian Penal Code to make sexual harassment an express offense under Section 354A. The offender will be sentenced to two years of imprisonment and a fine, or both, under this section.

This Act introduced new offenses such as disrobing a woman without her consent, or any other form of sexual offense as well as stalking in the IPC. (Section 354B, C, and D)
