I've had Ludovicas girlfriend on the brain for months and finally sketched her out. I see her as the opposite to machete in that she has dark colours and softer shapes. Her ears and facefur kinda blend together and she gets big soft browneyes..

"Marchil? I guess I can see it on Chilchuckā€™s end, but what about Marcilleā€™s? What makes you think she could develop feelings for him?" Iā€™m glad you asked!
The first thing to note is that she does think highly of him
Tumblr media
In the page on the right, literally defending his virtues and literally comparing him to Dalclan. And ohā€¦
Tumblr media
She does love a brooding mysterious guy who closes himself to love. But surely, Chilchuck isnā€™t her type at all, right? Heā€™s not princely or knightly at all. In apperances certainly not, both looks wise and demeanor wise, but then thatā€™s why she seeks to know him on a deeper level, to not only look shallowly.
And hmm. Chilchuck really is quite selfless isnā€™t he? Always looking out for others, and saving specifically her often, always making sure himself and, staying in or even running towards danger for her sometimes. Modesty is often considered heroicā€¦
Tumblr media
And can we talk about that drowning oneā€¦ You can definitely frame the special attention as him knowing she tends to hesitate or be clumsy, and then his insistance on pulling her out of danger that sheā€™s the healer aka the most important to keep alive, but. From the one who says that he just keeps his ass out of fights and wonā€™t help this is a lot of risk to take, and he does die trying to pull her to safety in the dungeon rabbits chapter. And the drowning bit??? Thatā€™s when the dungeon collapses. The only reason they DONā€™T die of drowning here is that the water then gives way to outside. There was NO hope of pulling her to safety here and resurrections would likely not work either, he truly preferred to die with her than try to survive himself.
Sit your ass back DOWN you are in no state, self-sacrifical hero much damn
Tumblr media
And Marcille definitely noticed this imo, after all she loves learning all she can about him, remembering things like how he hates waiting on people too. She pays attention to him and what he does and what he says. This to say that itā€™s notable, whatever reason for it you may think (though we know by this point at least she was already aware he was an adult though it wasnā€™t internalized), out of everyone itā€™s Chilchuckā€™s bed that she wants to sleep in during the Golden Kingdom stay. Heā€™s safe and comforting to her: dependable, the defining trait in her view of him as is shown by the relationship chart in the Adventurerā€™s Bible.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
^ Lending handkerchiefs is a romance trope btw and handkerchiefs have irl history of being used for courting. Especially in old English literature and plays like Shakespeareā€™s Othello, and personally I do see a lot of Shakespeare in Dalclan (nobility political drama with some romance). Thereā€™s how his cowl is a dearly beloved souvenir from his family too, thereā€™s a lot of aesthetic tropes you can apply to him.
All this to say you can 100% romanticize Chilchuck into a princely noble guy if you try and thatā€™s exactly what Marcille does with the wife roleplay. She doesnā€™t need much in the first place, she latches onto crumbs and makes aesthetic narratives out of details, give her an inch sheā€™ll take a mile.
But whatā€™s interesting about the shift throughout the arc of her and his relationship is that she starts out idealizing him into a little angel of a kid (shapeshifter), and she ends it idealizing him as a virtuous husband and family man instead.
And whatā€™s doubly interesting is that in the former, sheā€™s actively warping who he is personality and demeanor wise to fit the aesthetic, he doesnā€™t have that bitter pride of not asking for help and the edges have been smoothened. But what she does during the wife roleplay is something else, she acknowledges the flaws and justā€¦ Accepts them, rolls with them. Sheā€™s aware of his flaws and implements them into the narrative, but the reason why his wife left doesnā€™t capitalize on them even, rather Chil is chilblivious and his wife loves him very much still, sheā€™s just testing him after having had a night of feeling out of place at his side.
And this is what separates the idealization vs romanticization, sheā€™s not twisting him into someone else sheā€™s just uplifting what he is and focusing on the good sides.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Marcille: "he has a shitty personality sometimes but if he was my husband Iā€™d still cherish him" "If I were your wife Iā€™d be overjoyed to go out with you and would get myself prettied up while you complain about me taking a long time, your friends would tell me that Iā€™m nice and thatā€™d make me happy, but Iā€™d also be sad because you wouldnā€™t tell me that you love me enough"
Heā€™s angry and his wife left him, heā€™s *flawed*, but heā€™s still worth hyping up, still worth having his own romance story, still has a shot of winning back his beloved. She sees him for what he is, human and real and not a carefully scripted character that fits an aesthetic, and she thinks itā€™s still worthy of love and admiration and fighting for
And whatā€™s funny too is that you might expect her to cool down on him once she learns more about him but actually she only gets increasingly into his business. You tell her your age and next thing you know you promise to introduce her to your family. Give her an inch she takes a mile. And too the thing is, Senshi is equally mysterious but she doesnā€™t pester him like at all, asks him ONCE about his succubus and he doesnā€™t even answer and thatā€™s likeā€¦ It. With Chilchuck it starts off innocently enough with her wanting to know his age, hometown, the stuff she mentions having asked pre-canon. But it just keeps and keeps going and escalating. Think sheā€™ll be satisfied now knowing you have a wife and kids, maybe sheā€™s disillusioned now? Wrong! She wants to know their names and ages and occupations and hey how did you propose to your wife? Do you think sheā€™ll stop after meeting them? Whatā€™s next? What will she want to know next????
Tumblr media
Sheā€™sā€¦ Like itā€™s not a reach that Marcille is all over him. Like it doesnā€™t mean itā€™s romantic but she just is. She is not normal about him idk. Can you not ask him about what tongue technique he used when first kissing his wife, give the man breathing room
Marcille could literally go "if I was Chilchuckā€™s wife" having deeply pondered and thought out the hypothetical and people would still ask where anyone sees any romantic potential between them. Oh wait
Thereā€™s a platonic explanation for everything (almost?) in Dungeon Meshi donā€™t say Iā€™m saying otherwise, but itā€™s definitely not like thereā€™s nothing here to read into lol
Going off a bit more under read bc itā€™s my fave topic
Marcille has a whole theme with the charming prince trope with her idealization and storybook motif and Chil is kinda the "Well someone perfect like that isnā€™t very realistic and romance is usually more complex and thatā€™s ok and good and flawed people can still be āœØvirtuousāœØ" catalyst
Do you see do you see she starts canon thinking the most romantic thing is a prince charming but her arc in the end has her romanticizing an average, flawed, real and realistic family man, whoā€™s on the poorer side and is on the verge of divorce. And thatā€™s what he needed, too, seeing the positive of himself and the situation instead of focusing on the negative is explicitly what inspires him to hope that he might be able to reconcile with his wife, gives him the courage and self-esteem to shoot his shot.
He IS a prince figure instead that now itā€™s not about idealizing the grand and overt itā€™s about romanticizing the small things in real life!! About finding joy and beauty in things that seem normal or mundane and uplifting them to make the world feel kinder!!!!
Heā€™s the devoted virtuous man that she wantsss not the storybook prince thatā€™s unrealistic and could crumble like a script at any time. Heā€™s the perfect example of a flawed realistic but virtuous & devoted & loving man. Far from a prince charming, but not fully detached from it either. Something worth fighting for despite the flawed cracks. Like literally, flawed romance being worth fighting for is literally the finale of Chilchuck and Marcilleā€™s arc on the matter, where their separate arcs and issues intersect at the most crucial moment.
Marcille is important to Chilā€™s arc not only because of her optimism, but also because of her interest and knowledge in romance & matters of the heart, and thatā€™s what he needs to both open his heart up to hope and to try to reconcile with his wife, like idk sounds gay
Their arc together is literally learning to 1) see each other for how they are and not undermining their qualities capacities etc etc while still not leaving flaws unchecked either and 2) opening up to people. Marcille LITERALLY makes Chil open his heart up to hope like idk man. What do you want from me. Heā€™s literally the guy helping her through deconstructing novels and fantasy and rose tinted glasses and like. Deconstructing the prince charming figure into something more real but still romantically beautiful like KUI KUI STOOOOP STOP Iā€™M ALREADY HOOKED Iā€™M ALREADY-
Ā Ok fine thatā€™s me reading into the tropes too much forgive me for being storybook brained but like. Speaking his heart out to a lone woman on a balcony, Romeo and Juliette shit, asking if she, too, doesnā€™t want to meet his family, madly blushing. And like sheā€™s learned with Chilchuck itā€™s all in the little things, all the implications he cannot speak aloud. She does reciprocate, does blush madly back, and the first thing she does is shower him in flowers and jewelry and what in her heart is coded as romantic gifts
Tumblr media
A lady, stashed away in a high tower by her lonesome, waiting for someone to call out to her from belowā€¦ Romeo courting type shit with an offer, a heartfelt spiel, implicit confession from underneath her balcony. Offering him flowers because he succeeded in calling out to her heartā€¦ā€¦.. And they have to climb to her tooā€¦. Crazy
Doesnā€™t it sound like a proposal. One thatā€™s both so storybook-like and not, contrastedly real and grounded, all about the implications rather than in your face grand gestures, "Donā€™t you want to meet my family?". They literally have an arc about the topic of romance and this is the climax/pinnacle of it like god?? This is @ the woman who said "Chilchuck is a shy/bashful man so I know he wouldnā€™t tell me he loves me, butā€¦" btw
To quote a friend, truly the shiny secret unlockable dating sim capture target : THE DUNGEON LORD BIT WAS SO FUNNY BECAUSE HE KNEW SHE'D TAKE IT HOOK LINE AND SINKER HES THE ONE WHO GOT HER TO TURN AROUND COMPLETELY SHES LIKE. WIDE EYED FLAG RAISED???? FLAG RAISED WITH CHILCHUCKĀ šŸ‘€šŸ‘€šŸ‘€ā€¼ļøšŸ‘€šŸ‘€ā€¼ļøšŸ‘€
And the way that this is the culmination of their arc togetherā€¦ Like people are not ready for the ā€˜Chil calling out to dunlord Marcille on the balcony has Romeo and Juliette romance novels imageryā€™ take. Or the ā€˜their arc is about growing to see beauty even in the non-idealized, in the flawed and in the realā€™ take which makes it so so perfect if she were to lower her ideal from a charming elven prince to a virtuous halfling man (which she does end up romanticizing)
So there, you got to witness in real time what happens when I think about marchil for longer than 2 minutes, there are so many layers itā€™s a deranged rabbithole. I saw the necronomicon of subtext and itā€™s driving me to madness with forbidden knowledge that no one else sees
ā€¦ā€¦. Like what if I told you she implicitly picked Chilchuck over a "unrealistic prince charming whoā€™s actually disingenuous" much earlier in the story already. If she was given the choice to think through going with a guy that seems perfect and chivalrous like her succubus sheā€™d pick Chilchuck over the other actually. If I sound insane rn tune in for my full analysis on them coming this month hopefully thank youu. Interwoven arcs of fantasy vs reality and idealization vs pessimism I love youuu
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So now you know the general thesis of my planned analysis about the importance of the prince charming figure in Marcille and Chilchuckā€™s arc, where she romanticizes things to a sometimes worrying degree or idealize people into something easy and digestible and poetic (like Chil being a kid, and then him being a virtuous āœØāœØāœØhusband), and how she needs to value aesthetics less and actual acts and facts more, be more grounded (like seeing people for what they are flaws and all, and accepting that people need money and not pulling through on principles of honor or unity shouldnā€™t get Namari shamed) and a part of that is accepting that Chilchuck is BOTH flawed and virtuous, a loving husband that still has shitty moods and fumbled his marriage so bad etc etc. So itā€™s like, her image of perfect prince charming that will whisk you away on an ethereal romance -> realistic flawed middle aged dad with personality issues and a failing marriage but he still is worthy of love and having his cute grand romance story and his happy ending. Ik I keep repeating the same point through this but I need it to be burned into everyoneā€™s brains it has its grip on me I canā€™t do this. They are so specialā€¦ā€¦
#Someone did ask (on discord) btw iā€™m not just being a smartass though I do love being that too#This is stuff I cover in my upcoming marcille & chil arc analysis except here I can go full romo and donā€™t keep the strictly platonic angle#Itā€™s at like 15k words rn I think. The 30 pics limit is killing me which is why I started asking my friend to do collages of panels for me#Sob#I keep alternating between it and the Falin analysis save me. Should be dropping soon idk i might test out having a beta reader for that on#Marchil foreplay is 2 years of being coworkers and slowly worming personal questions out of him until he blinks and she has#a key to his house#Dungeon meshi#marchil#marcille donato#chilchuck tims#like theyā€™re so so funny look at this shit. Nonconsensual romanticizing of you as a person. Obsessive interest in your personal life#Sheā€™s latched so hard onto the ā€œmysteryā€ of him theyā€™re deranged#MAYBE ITS ALL COMPROMISES MAYBE ITS ALL SWEET INBETWEENS <3#maybe we'll take our vision of what we thought we could be and make something new together. something for just us#Fumi rambles#Maaan Marcilleā€™s ā€˜idealizing him into liking him even for all his flaws bc his personality is often kinda shittyā€™ arcā€™#and Chilchuckā€™s ā€˜prejudice against elves and mages and optimism into respect and trustā€™ arc are everything to me#Meta#Spoilers#Dungeon meshi manga spoilers#Tagged this so late oops#Itā€™s so funny. Sheā€™s canonically wondered how Chil would be like as a lover#No no but like do u see. Fantasy is a key part of her chrcter and arc and heā€™s the foil to that heā€™s the thing that comes challenge it

the more i think about it the more im convinced the way to fix the luthor retcon is just "using the female characters". that's it. we bring in the contessa (say she duped westfield by putting lex luthor's dna in there, somehow, and this is the actual retcon part. it's smaller, and doesn't contradict rots), say that it was some secret plan of hers that never came to fruition. then we get lex being as blindsided by it as kon, and we get the contrast in how he treats baby lena vs how he treats kon (his child vs a failed tool that's nothing to him now). and we can keep the superfam as a found family, with clark, the steels, and the eradicator all reaffirming their love for kon, regardless of whose 0.01% of human dna was used to stabilize him. AND we can keep his eventual bond with lori luthor. best of both worlds!
bam!!! fixed!!! luthor retcon, now with 100% less eugenics, and 100% more of keeping kon's original scifi themes and strong feelings on personhood and conflicted feelings on how he yearns for a family!! that's it babey!!! it could've been that easy!!! the key is just... its the female characters. it's the female characters!!!!

cutter was born in the 20s, and he'd become "arthur keller" by the early 70s, so obviously pryce's story at the beginning of brave new world can't be taken literally - that's not even an old man, much less "older than anyone she had ever met." it's also inarguable she was an adult already working on her... ideas for the human body when cutter sought her out; "i want you to make a doll for me" and "i found people who had some very bold ideas about how to... tune up the human body [...] i funded their work, and provided them with a willing test subject" are pretty definitely referring to the same events. so, it's fairy tale language, but the question is: why? why frame it this way?
one part of it is the "fountain of youth" in connection to immortality, strength, and health. the implication isn't literally that cutter is very old and pryce is very young; it's that she represents this power, and that he wants her to bestow it upon him: "then you and i will fix the world. i will be young and you will be whole." cutter and pryce choose to look eternally 28, while referring to and conducting themselves as if they're very old: it's not just vanity, it's part of their self-mythology. simultaneously young and old, having overcome the natural order.
that mythology of "overcoming" natural limitations is especially significant for pryce: characterizing herself as a "little girl" within her own story is both self-victimizing and self-aggrandizing. pryce does not see herself as disabled so much as temporarily inconvenienced; even the usual limitations of the human body are something she hopes to transcend. "instead of being wretched or afraid, the little girl decided to be clever." she was put at a disadvantage, but overcame it all by herself because she was smarter and better than other people. by extension, anyone who can't do what she did just isn't good enough, even as she's closing doors behind her and making it harder for others like her. and at the same time: it's an underdog story that requires her to have been an underdog. she hasn't been in a very, very long time, but the power she holds over others remains justified in her self-perception by this image of a sick little girl who was hurt by the world. there's an implication of inherent worthiness, and even a sort of expected assumed innocence in characterizing it that way. the first thing people notice about pryce is her eyes, and... sure, maybe it's the technology, but if cutter can catch bullets without any visible signs, it seems likely to me that, like her age, this is at least in part an aesthetic choice. it intimidates people. she's turned this point of hurt and vulnerability into a power play, and remains attached to it.
and that's the other part of the mythologizing that's going on: presumably, pryce was not the only person who worked on all of this. cutter funded others. but the story retroactively simplifies it, in a childish fairy tale way, and paints an image of them as exceptional, uniquely capable and so uniquely deserving, people.
i think there's something interesting to consider here about pryce in contrast to hera: that pryce is a woman who self-justifies her cruelty via a mythologized girlhood, while hera is a woman who was never a girl, who was never considered innocent or even allowed the same recognition of the ways she's been a victim. pryce resents humanity and all it represents, resents her body and its limitations, feels that being human has only caused her suffering, but still clearly believes that she has more of a claim to humanity than hera does by nature of her biology and upbringing. pryce's "bootstraps" attitude re: disability and her own self-victimization are the crucial things here, but i think that is also particularly interesting if you read hera as a trans woman.
(incidentally, this is part of why i have a particular love for hera designs where she's just a regular woman, more angular, and maybe even older looking - a natural 30-something in contrast to an unnaturally maintained 28 - than pryce. they're both women who have chosen how they want to look, and it highlights something.)

I think itā€™s so ironic that the Pony Express escapes a lot if not all blame in discussion. I canā€™t even say I am excused from it but itā€™s just how hard people circle back to the characters alone without considering the environment they were made to be in.
Why would they design a ship where only two of the rooms lock? Not the bathroom? Not the sleeping quarters? We assume that all the companies in the universe are this shallow and careless to their workers but we explicitly know the Pony Express in extra vile. They are fed processed slop pack they canā€™t even really cook and the ration of those pack is meager at best. They hired and made people with a plethora of conflicting demeanors and beliefs work together on a mission where cohesion is important if not an outright necessity and punish them for not being happy about it. Thereā€™s no social protocols, not chain of command other than Captainā€™s word/choice and the only way to enforce that is with a literal firearm. They donā€™t allow them to celebrate freely and even took away leisure activities that would make them less stir crazy. They are only allowed a few hours of sleep despite their being no other real responsibilities or work on the ship, no matter the position or its importance. With any crew, with any level of synergy, this was a powder keg waiting for a spark.
Iā€™m not saying characters that made mistakes didnā€™t make huge ones, but I think part of the horror is that at least for some (this is targeting Jimathan) those mistakes are partly made by a force of the hand. Thereā€™s a running theme of lack of choice and being forced into something and the very nature of how The Pony Express expected them to function plays a big part.
#like even I forget that all actions taken in the game were people trying to remain in protocol outside of Jimmy#Anya couldnā€™t have jus stolen the scanner and got the gun cause sheā€™s a sensible person and knows sheā€™d be in legal trouble#or get everyoneā€™s credits docked or just hoping that thereā€™s some chain of command for this sort of thing#Daisuke only really acted in accordance to his direct superiors because heā€™s an intern he wouldnā€™t know the first thing about protocol or#what to do in any situation. like this is essentially implied to be his first real job#Curly may be the captain but he still has to follow rules and procedures and we see with the letter the Pony Express likely has very shady#and shitty ones. he gives the best not depressing or totalitarian options he can otherwise everything is just his word which arenā€™t even his#or like him just asserting his position with the gun which he wouldnā€™t do#Swansea follows the book begrudgingly because heā€™s trying to stay right and not fall back into who he once was#I feel like itā€™s not incorporated nearly enough that the environment they were dropped into heavily affected their actions#say there was a single person higher than Curly or a plan of action when a crew member is considered a danger to himself or others#I think itā€™s fascinating how people will stick to protocol and break when they get scared or to their limit#cause the game shows how normalcy deteriorates and I think discounting what the characters where put through by the company takes a way a#real and scary aspect of what happened to Anya because as a friend Curly didnā€™t do enough for her at all his comfort was there and he#appreciated but it was a distracted sort of care but as a Captain he didnā€™t protect her but heā€™s was a Captain of the Pony Express like what#if they told him to wait to? he still shouldā€™ve done something because Anya was actively suffering and Jimmy shouldā€™ve been reprimanded but#heā€™s a captain with orders like the Tulpar isnā€™t his ship in the same way like#god I wanna explain this in a way that makes sense but the Tulpar is like designed to breed animosity and work on the bare requirements one#needs to get things done thatā€™s not how people work and if anyone deviates or interrupts that it literally has nothing to handle it#it becomes clear that if any social unrest happens why they just say fuck it and give the Captain the gun because if something happens the#blame can easily be placed on the person they put in charge despite what they put them#in charge of like this is just like work place harassment irl because often the perpetrators are not punished but the supervisors for not#stopping them with meetings or cuts or whatever but the environment the company fostered is rarely fixed or blamed#like why was this allowed to occur? and honestly that is because Jimmy did what he did#ask me about this if this is confusing cause I worded it crazy#mouthwashing#mouthwashing game#the pony express

Actually thinking more about Reiju's only sin being a woman and... Going into more depth, I know that logically/canonically she's smart and empathetic enough to not want to be in her brothers' place. She doesn't want to be an heir/ successor or follow the family's footsteps at all. She knows they're bad. She sees herself as such, too, unable to change/be different like Sanji was. She doesn't think she can bring her mother's kindness to this world the way Sanji does, so she sticks to what she knows, whether it is to protect Sanji too or to accept her fate.
BUT (and bear with me for a second here, I know I have been watching too much Succession lately) we also do know that during her childhood she didn't do anything to help Sanji from the abuse. She watched it happen because that was the way things went there and because she knew what would happen to her if she did. Of course, she ends up helping him escape and taking care of him but-- I'm just thinking, for a tiny little moment, about how she's actually the oldest.
She should be the heir. She should be the person everybody views Ichiji as. She should be considered the most responsible. The smartest. The strongest one. The one who should take the throne. And she doesn't even want it now, but what about back then? What about when she did have some little, tiny faith/hopes for her family and what they did? She sought approval and naively thought "my father is going to offer me the place I rightfully deserve, right?" blindly seeking acceptance like all of them did.
But no, because she might be the oldest but Ichiji is a man. She might be the strongest, the smartest, the most reliable... But she is not a man. And I believe there must have been a time when she expected her destiny to be something more, and once she realized she was just a woman in their eyes... Well, we know what happened.
I just keep finding similarities between The Vinsmokes (OP) and The Roys (Succession) and perhaps my headcanon of Reiju being similar to Shiv has gone a bit too far. But the scene where Shiv is like "This is real?" when Logan promises she'll be the CEO and he goes "This is real. Remember this. The slant of light" for it to be a lie later is something I fear could have happened with Reiju and Judge if Oda had given us more content,,,,
