The first El WooWoo of the year! And as the banner says, I’m still reading instead of writing. So here we go. Buckle up, Klainers and ... Snovians (???? is there a name for Snowbaz shippers? This is just Simon. Snowbazzians?) (What would you call Baz fans? Bazzies?).

I am really enjoying these fic rec posts, more than I thought. It also motivates me to read more, which is a win-win. I do have some ideas for Ljubim te again, so I think I’ll start writing them soon. But maybe I will make a separate post for fics, aside from Wip Wednesday and Six Sentence Sunday? Fic Rec Friday?

I am catching up on The Rise and Fall of Simon Snow by @confused-bi-queer. I last read chapter 5, and [Jason Mendoza voice] oh Simon and Baz, we’re really in it now. I am upsetti spaghetti.

I am still riding the angst train right into Is It Over Yet? by @jayne89. God I really wish Carmen was actually this good, instead of a plot device for Rachel’s.... uhm... questionable storylines. Really excited for more of this verse.

God, I am really going through it, huh? @thnxforknowingme wrote a 2022 fic in review where she mentioned True Colors, a character study of Quinn between season 2 and 3, and I like the premise. I really enjoyed it. Damn, skank!Quinn had so much potential, but RIB just had to do the wack baby storyline.

This isn’t Jenna’s only fic that I have read. I finally, finally read Miles To Go, and I know a fic this wonderful should have a long and coherent comment, but I am just speechless. So utterly speechless. I started it when it was originally posted, but I had just lost my grandmother and yeah it was the wrong time. Now, we got the message that it’s time for my uncle to collect her ashes. Weird way to go back to a fic, but that’s what happened, and this fic tugged at my heartstrings. I definitely recommend it to everyone.

Also, more Jenna stuff, but insert the Chris Fleming meme here. Was no one ever going to tell me that Jenna has written Hades fic, or was I just supposed to find out by browsing through her AO3 by myself? Aíma.... YOOOO. The relation between Zaggie and blood? Jenna, your mind!

More sad shit? More sad shit! @wellbelesbian really made me say FUCK THE MAGE with the latest chapter of blow on the tinder. Guys, this is such a good fic. Alex, I am so glad you’re continuing it!

Okay, okay, whooo, time out with the angst. @redheadgleek‘s Pierce My Soul is a fluffy gem and I am a bitch for costume crew!Kurt. Although he got promoted here and he designed the costumes, including Blaine’s. There are so many great gems in this fic, but I lost it at Brad Ellis being the piano man. And when the fic mirrored dialogue from the show.... my heart!

I definitely boarded the fluff train now. I saw @letraspal‘s art for @skeedelvee‘s Drunken Kisses. I am all 🥺🥺🥺🥺 about this fic. Simon “He Is Plotting” Snow is amazing. Mix it with Baz “Gay Yearning” Pitch and voila!

@facewithoutheart delves into Simon’s sad childhood, but in a fluffy way, in What I Wouldn’t Give. Simon gets his first plushie and we all cry. I am such a bitch for this concept and Christina helpfully linked to another one, namely to @lifewithoutmotivation​‘s Flamey. I am just overwhelmed on Simon’s behalf! This guy deserves all the gifts and birthday parties! (Also, congrats on the new URL!)

And we’re going to end this rec post with more holiday cheers from the holiday queers (really, did anyone watch The New Normal?) with @1908jmd​‘s Klaine Advent 2022 - With their favourite people. honestly g7 as grp and individually have won me over with their music style, even if i don't like full album ik there will be 3-4 songs which will be exactly what i like to listen to, all of the music they've released individually i've liked it so much. there is this song of youngjae's, titled "i'm all ears" i had no idea of its existence until it popped up in my spotify i'm so glad it did, it's been in my playlist ever since. there was also a time when i was obsessed with jackson's 'on the rocks' djdjdk.

hm well skam nl is my favorite and their social media game is trash LMAOOO so generally No but i do feel like remakes who DO have such a good presence kind of elevate the show and i think it’s pretty heartwarmin to see some remakes go sm farther than skam with social media and puttin out educational and IN CHARA resources like skames does this so well and i feel like in that way, the team is really really spreadin skam’s spirit via these resources (like joana’s billion bpd awareness ig accounts and lucas rubio’s yt channel)

2. Least favourite clip of the show? Why?

tbh there are definitely some duds but probably one of the clips with sana gettin herself into a hole in s4 just bc some were hard to watch cus cringey or yikes .... idk i cant think of others LMAO

season 1 - tbh even though i really enjoyed this season, it does take a while for it to build up like i rmr at first not being that interested until ep6 maybe ?? which is hard when you’re trying to get your friends to watch but they have to wait until ep6 before shit starts RLLY buildin up and gettin wild

season 2 - hm ig noora chasin after william ??

season 3 - bro NOTHINGGG call me a purist but its such a refined masterpiece like the pacing is good the characterization is so good ugh i deadass cant think of anythin

season 4 - i always felt a little ??? w noora being sana’s bff ig bc from s1-s3 it didn’t Feel like they were that close like even in noora’s pov, sana wasn’t really a part of it that much ?? like eva was more of noora’s bff ?? so i feel like it would have made more sense if maybe sana spoke more with chris or vilde bc sana and vilde eventually seemed to get closer esp with kosegruppa and chris has always been by sana’s side ?? idk that always confused me

5. What is your opinion on the cast’s participation on social media? Do you prefer it when the cast aren’t that involved like the Skam cast, or do you like a lot of content like the Fr cast do?

tbh i don’t care much abt the casts LMAOOO if anythin it kind of brings more harm as seen with the harassment axel and maxence get and also can bring more controversy like with irene (which honestly is p sad considerin how much i love skames bc now i feel super :/ watchin it like she shouldve just had private accts at this point)

OOOHHH ugh torn bc i like isak’s pov but also i want even’s so might have to forfeit isak season for even season ....... hm so probs vilde, sana, even, noora (maybe not w william tho) and honestly maybe jonas too ??

8. Are there any moments that you liked in the show that everyone else seems to hate?

IJXDWQOIJJ yes .... remakes-wise, people hate skam nl s2’s last half but i enjoyed it for the most part ... i think the pacing was off for the last ep but personally, clip 50 made up for it and is p god tier imo ..... and also don’t think the first half of ep10 is enough to discredit the entire season bc i rlly loved seeing liv’s pov and have sm fave moments from the season 

but skam wise, omg might get a lil controversial w this one IM SORRY !!! im bein honest and its Just my opinion ok 

personally s2 got me more invested than s1 and i don’t think its a super bad season like i didnt really say many problems wrong with it until i got on tumblr wiejioqjoiqjq i was sort of interested in the questions that the noora/william dynamic brought up which is, as expressed in william’s war speech to noora, that nothing is ever black/white which i feel was a huge message and feeds into the ‘you never know what ppl are going through’ theme of the season ... like i like the idea of someone like noora, who can have a black/white mentality (as seen in the first clip of s2 when she tells vilde that they can’t have the tannin company as their sponsor bc they objectify women or smth but misses the context and what it could mean for the bus monetarily bc shes caught up in bein ‘woke’) having to break out of that and see more than one side ... and i think remakes like skam austin expanded on this idea well like when zoya was like ‘must be so nice being right all the time’ which i Do feel like is an important for youth to know today .... bc i think its so easy to get caught up in the idea of being so objectively right and morally superior that people lose sight of the more nuanced characteristics to life ... (omg long ramble BUT)

also LMAOOOOO this one might be more controversial as it pertains to bench scene s4 ok oops again doNT GOTTA AGREE !! ........ but i feel like the scene had a lot of good intentions ... i was def kind of cringing a bit tho bc i understand the subject’s sensitivity and how these topics are hard to talk about but i genuinely feel like they both made Some points and should listen to each other .... like as Hard and as maybe ‘unwoke’ it is to admit, unfortunately you sort of do have to answer the tough questions bc that way we learn from each other .... and i perfectly understand why some ppl wouldn’t want to do this and i certainly am tired abt havin to answer shit abt my sexuality or stupid male questions abt women but if u dont answer them, people do go lookin for answers still and the internet is such a shitty place that its pretty easy (esp with youtube’s algorithm) to lead you to ignorant ppl and perhaps radicalization .... questions help us to better understand our community and sometimes they can have good intentions too but we have to ask and answer them or else people will make up answers (which ive literally seen and its honestly worse to see fake as shit and UNINFORMED answers bc ppl did not want to ask you or ppl of ur identity, esp when they’re already startin from a place of hate .... but i rather have ppl ask me patronizing questions than have them spread false info bc that can do much more harm in the long run) however i DO think that isak should also consider sana’s side and i sort of wish we saw him conceding more bc they both have smth to learn from one another, like sana shouldn’t just be learnin from isak, isak needs to learn from sana too

9. What did you learn from the show?

omg honestly too much to write here tbh ..... but if it says anythin im (very slowly) in the works of a three part skam essay about basically how skam teaches us to be better humans and how to better treat the people we care about diowjqioj essentially the three biggest themes of the show: you never know what someone is going through so always be kind, always communicate with your friends, and no person is ever alone and i feel like these are definitely rlly good messages to live by (also livet er nå BITCH !!!)

omg tbh i could not tell u at all how the skam charas are doing except i hope even is okay thats all im thinkin of ok .... OIWXIOJX omg remakes wise tho ..... honestly im so bad at this girl IDK !!!!! LMAO i have to really think i have a bit of vdh and dutch even but thats bc we know like Zero abt them so its easier oijwiojqio idk liv and noah bein cute as shit ..... Two years ago today, in 2017, I was in a domestic violence shelter. I had just escaped my violently abusive ex, who had isolated me from everyone except for eir and then tried to kill me several times while knowing I had no one to reach out to for help. Those seven months in New York are the most traumatizing parts of my entire life, and I still struggle with the aftermath even two years later. I’m not gonna go too much into detail, but it was literally living hell and I was barely holding myself together.

I did two things while in the shelter: hyperfixated on Flux Buddies (I spent a LOT of time on atomiclalna on my phone without my laptop, and had piles of loose paper covered in scribbles of Lal), and watched a lot of McElroy content. My favourite was Monster Factory, but I branched out to watching Car Boys and Touch The Skyrim before I saw Griffin had started a new series: Peacecraft. I barely knew anything about Warcraft other than that I had a friend in, like, 2012 that had a canon url, and that one of my best friends played it and told me about it fairly often. I lost contact with the first one over time as our friend circles stopped overlapping, but the second one had been my good friend for two years that I cared about immensely... and then cut out of my life violently because of my ex.

I started watching Peacecraft anyway. I didn't really get it, but Griffin's commentary was fun and the game looked interesting. Warcraft was kind of something I’d wanted to get into since first seeing commercials when I was a kid, but I was too poor to afford a monthly subscription so I played MapleStory instead. I think Peacecraft was my first time seeing actual quality post-Cataclysm footage, seeing as before then the closest I got was when the aforementioned good friend screenshared with me on Skype a few times. (I had no idea what was going on, and Skype quality was garbage.)

I got up to Episode 5, when he invades Orgrimmar, and after getting very emotional over it I scrolled through the comments. I’m... not really sure why I did, because back then I hated looking at Youtube comments because they’re usually awful, but I guess because Polygon comments are usually rather funny or heartwarming? Most of the ones on Episode 5 are commenting on how they got emotional too, or catching references made, and trying to identify a song used that I was also trying to place. And... then I saw Jorb.

I hadn't talked to Jorb in months. Our last conversation had been really bad-- I wasn’t able to properly communicate what was going on with me mentally, he didn’t realize how severe my situation was, and, despite another friend mediating between us and us both deciding to improve our friendship, Magpie intervened and forced me to cut contact anyway. (Or, at least, that’s the gist of it. The order of events is kind of unclear because I underwent a lot of blunt head trauma and that plus the emotional abuse means my memories of NY are pretty much garbage.)

I don’t really remember what went through my head when I saw this comment. (I think there was some level of confusion at the icon-- he had the old Palanauts one, from when the channel was first rebranded, which I’d never seen before.) I probably got scared. Should I try to reach out to him? What if he hated me? Would he even want anything to do with me? Would I even be able to explain everything to him-- about what Magpie did to me, about why I cut contact, about anything? I hadn’t thought about him in months, but that was because Magpie literally didn’t allow me to.

I decided to bite the bullet. His tumblr was still active with the same URL that I remembered from when we’d last spoken, so I shot him an ask on atomiclalna (hadn’t made this blog yet, and my “ooc blog” was a sideblog anyway) trying to explain what happened. The message is, uh... a mess.

Honestly I have no idea how I would react if I got this kind of message in my inbox. I didn’t know what sort of tone I should be using asides from “very apologetic” and tumblr asks aren’t the best way to send a “sorry I cut you out of my life, I was being abused and then ended up in psych after a murder attempt put me in the ER” letter. I didn’t know if he was going to even respond. I don’t know if I expected him to or not, but I hoped he would.

And... he did. I couldn’t use Discord (Magpie still had my contact info), so we chatted on Google Hangouts about Peacecraft and Miraculous Ladybug and Twitch Plays Pokemon and other misc fandom things. It was like we’d never been apart.

Being with Jorb gave me the courage to try again. I met up with several other friends, I remade my tumblr and started drawing again, I even started playing Flight Rising again, which was something I used to do solely with Magpie because of our clans having interconnecting lore-- pretty much all of which is scrapped now so I can focus on my own ideas.

Since then, we’ve started dating-- or, more specific, one of my alters asked him out and then he asked out a couple others and me, which I think is endearing-- and I don’t know what I’d do without him in my life. He’s supported us through everything for two years, even when we hit the lowest lows, and everything he does makes me smile. And, even when we have moments of stress between us, we’re able to work it out and move on knowing how to avoid it in the future-- something I was never able to do with my previous partners.

I love you so, so much, Tristan. Thank you for being here for me.

Everything the microphone recorded, the speaker forgot. It took me a while to discover this, but since then, I’ve been extra cautious with what I say when the microphone is turned on. Thankfully, I’ve always been stingy with when I turn the microphone on, so I haven’t forgotten much myself.

I was out of a microphone and I found a stupidly good deal on Amazon. The seller was really obscure, and located on the other side of the country. There was only one item left in stock, so after five minutes of careful, laboured consideration, I hit the buy button. The product was delivered in only a couple days.

Now this is where things get murky. I recall turning it on, but I cannot for the life of me remember what I said. I used it to Skype with a friend, and I remember that my friend and I talked about cats, and then her travels, and then clothes, and I don’t recall a word of what I said to her. I didn’t notice it right away, but within a few days, I made the connection. The microphone was sucking in everything I said.

I took it to an interview. I set up the laptop, and the microphone. I had the questions before me. Simple, basic questions for an artist. What are your inspirations? What time do you work? When did you start doing art? The usual questions. We talked for an hour, and had a great time, and every time I said something, I was reminded of the fact that I was going to forget it soon.

After the interview was done, I disconnected the microphone.

“It’s all in the file now, but I just wanted to clarify,” I said, “Did you cite Pixar as an inspiration?”

They frowned. “I…” they began, and then I felt a perverse glee inside me as I watched them struggle. “I’m not sure,” they said, smiling nervously. “In fact, I’m not sure if I have any inspirations at all.”

I nodded, and then played the file back, the exact part where they cited Pixar as an influence.

“What?” was their first reaction. I could relate. “I said that? I’m not sure if that’s… but I think Pixar makes sense,” they touched their head.

I laughed it off and suggested they get some rest. Of course, there was a lot more to it than that, but I couldn’t risk telling them. I couldn’t risk telling anyone until I’d figured out the exact level of hijinks I could inflict with this microphone.

I looked up the seller on Amazon. They were gone. No trace whatsoever. The item still showed in my purchase history, but the seller URL went to a dead end.

While I sat at home, I played back the interview file. Everything the artist had said, I remembered. But listening to myself talk was like listening to someone else with a voice uncannily similar to mine.

I connected the microphone again and recorded a file, in which I explained to a future version of myself everything that I knew about the microphone. Then I disconnected, and I forgot. Then I played the file back, and stared at the microphone in amazement.

I could hardly believe myself.

Inside the folder, there are about two dozen audio files of various sizes. Each one is neatly labelled, complete with a date. They list my fears, my bad memories, trauma, broken relationships, cringeworthy moments, all of which I’d spoken at length about, as if I were in therapy. At least, that’s what I think is in those files, judging by their names.

The microphone that steals memories had become the ultimate medication for me. If I can’t remember anything bad about myself, it wouldn’t exist, right? And yet, that’s not how it worked. Rather than cleanly removing the bad memory, I was left with a dark, seeping hole in my memory. Somehow, I could tell that a memory existed there, and that it was gone. I didn’t know if the memory was good or bad—that had been replaced with a suspense. The suspense of not knowing whether that was a memory I shouldn’t have forgotten.

Sometimes I’d listen to a file if it really, really intrigued me. Most of the time, I’d just sink my head into my hands and wonder to myself why I’d let myself regain that memory. It was not worth it. So I’d delete the file, and record the memory again. Once done, I’d take a deep breath and try to remember it. It was gone. I couldn’t remember what I’d said.

A new hobby. I’d keep the mic connected and walk about town, recording the city. Me, I wouldn’t say a word during these excursions. But the people around me did. Once I was back home, I’d play the file back to me as I did my chores and browsed the internet. Everything that was said had been forgotten. The woman talking about how living in London is like. The boy discussing autism. The girl asking for an Oscar Wilde book at the book shop.

I was cleaning out everyone’s memories. Was it fair? Was I doing them a service?

I forgot.

I took the mic with me to press conferences, and talked to sportsmen, actors, directors, politicians, city officials, painters, writers, musicians. I asked them questions, and I asked them bare it all. All the deepest, darkest things they could think of. Of course, they never did talk about their deepest secrets. But what they did, they forgot.

And surprisingly, it hit the news. ‘An outbreak of amnesia’, the headline said. I couldn’t publish my interviews, I’d realised a long time ago. But this growing epidemic of amnesia was something I wasn’t sure how to handle. Do I continue recording the world, filling up their minds into my hard drive?

My head hurt. For some people, headaches are very common, but they’re actually quite rare for me. I took it as my body voting for the 'no’ camp. And to be fair, the mind was a part of the body. I’d been abusing my body, I realised.

And I’d been abusing every single person in this town.

I listened to the audio files every moment I got that I wasn't recording. The microphone was a weapon, and it gave me a power—a power I didn't know what to do with. They say that knowledge is power, so I hoarded it. I took notes, but the notes poured over themselves. I can't hold the city's secrets to myself. I can't hold the secrets of all the famous people I'd interviewed. I wasn't worthy of keeping them with me. I wasn't worthy. I wasn't worthy. I wasn't worthy of this microphone.

I considered breaking it. Of course, going public with it would only invite ridicule. No one would believe me. I had to break it, I thought. To make sure no one can use it again. I wasn't sure who had given me this unusual device or why, but I knew that it was a curse. A burden I couldn't possibly take on.

I cried.

I couldn't do it. It didn't help that a part of me was conjuring bizarre fantasies of unleashing technological curses that might spread every which way if I were to destroy the mic. What if it is some ancient mummy's curse? Wouldn't want to risk it.

So instead, I watched the city destroy itself. The situation got worse by the day. I'd stopped recording, but the damage was done. So much had been forgotten that the entire infrastructure had stopped functioning.

I'd wounded people, I realised. Wounded them without their knowledge. It wasn't unlike shooting them down, or exploding a bomb in their faces—the victims wouldn't know what hit them. And that's how it was: my victims didn't know what hit them. They were living angry, distraught, frustrated lives as they struggled to remember memories that had been stolen from them.

Memories that were about to be deleted if I chose to hit the OK button on the format dialog box.

I paced around. I had lunch. I watched a dumb comedy show on TV. I checked my mail obsessively, which was full of confused messages from people asking if I knew what they'd talked about during their interview.

Finally, I hit OK.

Everything on the drive disappeared.

All the memories of the city, everything people knew, about themselves, about others, about the things that mattered and the things that didn't.

It was a fresh start. A new beginning.

Maybe this was the power that I had been granted, after all. The power to start things anew.

Even as the city descended into chaos—deep, psychic chaos, I was the only person who knew. I put the microphone in a wooden box and drove out into the desert outside the city. I drove for a couple of hours, and then buried the box in the sand, somewhere far away from civilisation.

I wasn't stupid. I knew someone would find it.

Thankfully, all I had to do was talk about what I'd seen the next time I saw the microphone, and then it would stop mattering.

When realization hit on who it was your heart began to flutter in excitement. “Finally,” you whispered to yourself as you plugged in your earbuds and began to listen. As the beat died off and faded away, you instantly decided to reblog it. It was just too good not to and you defiantly needed it on your dash. As time continued to pass, you thought it was best to stop for the day and slowly drifted off to sleep. Dreams soon swirled around you as you fell though the thousands of thoughts and ideas your mind brought to you while you slept.

 One simple notification was all it took to wake you. You looked at your alarm clock and it read 4:00 am. You sighed as you read the notification. Blinded by the light by instant reaction you turned your phone to dim. ‘That’s odd’ you thought as you opened the notification that told you that you received a message.

Luckily nobody was in the bathroom to hear your scream. ‘I need answers’ you thought to yourself as you quickly rushed back in time to line up for photos. You purposely waited in the back to get your chance to talk to him a little longer. When you finally had a chance, you faced him. “Why didn’t you tell me?” you sighed “Because I didn’t know how you would react and I figured that it would be a good surprise” he replied, chuckling nervously. You both smiled for your picture as everyone began to get pushed out. “Wait! Y/N!” He ran over to you hanging one of his sweaters. With the other hyungs calling his name in confusion he told you he would text you later and ran back to not get left behind by the others. You placed on the sweater while you were walking out but something dropped out of the front pocket. You picked it up and saw it was a note and decided to read it.

I’ve written about how I figured out how to (mostly) stay on top of email in a previous post, and Mail was really the only client that worked for me. (You can create smart searches in GMail but it doesn’t work the way I, or anyone who wanted to follow my method, need it to). In short, I focus on email sent only to me and in the last 24 to 48 hours. I make every attempt to whack away at all other email (distribution list email, etc) within 24 hours. Yes, stuff slips through. But it relieves the cognitive burden of seeing a full inbox every time you look at email. (Mail for iOS also supports a Today view, and recently AirMail for iOS added one as well.)

MailMate’s demo period is very generous–30 days (that’s 30 days of use, not 30 calendar days, mind you). You have to fiddle with it a bit to get Gmail to work correctly (my school district uses it across the district) if you want to preserve the inbox vs. archived mail scheme that Google employs, but it’s not difficult to do. Furthermore, it supports Smart Searches à la Mail and even offers some powerful suggestions for other Smart Searches.

MailMate supports a number of other features that make it worth looking at. It has a plug-in system so that you can send messages right to OmniFocus and DEVONthink, for example, and supports hopping into your favorite text editor to craft longer messages. (This is how I rediscovered MailMate and decided to give it a try–I was looking for a way to recreate the experience of using HogBay Software’s QuickCursor. There are a host of views supported as well, including a unique correspondance view. But really, I wanted a complete absence of visual clutter… think plain text, no email previews: just a stark list of your messages with data in columns, as little or as much as you want.

MailMate’s Austerity

In the realm of email clients, MailMate is kind of expensive, but if your needs are largely solipsistic and you have to handle volume–and you like a sparse layout–it’s very much worth the price. And if you like to hack, it’s probably the only game in town.

If there’s a downside here, it’s that I can’t use InfoClick with MailMate. The search features are more robust in MailMate than Mail, so I probably don’t need InfoClick. Behold:

So the string “f tgod A xls” reveals any email from my boss that has an attachment with “xls” in the filename. That’s pretty powerful, and a good example of how I would use InfoClick.

Bartender

I started using Purple Safari shortly after it came out and the long appelation in Mac OS X’s menu bar meant that a number of menu bar items were obscured… and not necessarily the ones that I would have chosen to obscure. Bartender gives you a menu bar item into which you can store menu bar items that you don’t necessarily need to see all the time. I like to keep wifi, time, and battery visible all the time; clicking on the Bartender icon reveals Dropbox, Google Drive, OmniSync Serivces, MailMate’s unread count, 1Password, volume, BetterSnapTool, Airplay, Bumpr, Script Menu, Bluetooth, Time Machine, and Spotlight. For example, I’d never click on the Spotlight icon; I’d invoke it using the keyboard. With Dropbox, I just need to see if it’s online or not. It’s not something I interact with generally, but it’s helpful to see if there’s a network issue.

Bumpr

Bumpr does one thing: when you click on a URL, you can choose the browser that handles the URL. This works by changing Bumpr to your default web browser. It also handles mailto links.

I’m primarly a Safari user, but there are some applications, and links to documents and spreadsheets at work, that are better accessed using Chrome. Furthermore, I like to be logged into my work account in Chrome, and my personal Gmail account on Safari.

Clicking on URLs in Safari won’t invoke Bumpr, only links from outside of the browser. This is smart because obviously it would get old if you were selecting a browser every time you tried to follow a link.Bumpr optionally allows you to set a default choice as well, and only prompts you to choose if you hold down the shift key.

I first discovered Choosy for the purpose of selecting a browser, and while it’s perfectly serviceable, Bumpr looks a little better.

For most of my purposes, I start in 1Password and click on a link. I hold down the Shift key and choose the browser I want to use for the site… It’s an extra step but there are some services that don’t do Safari; I no longer have to copy/paste links in Chrome.

Scrivener

So much as been written about this app that it isn’t instructive for me to say much about it. I will say, though, that I was always curious about the application, but I always approached it like a word processor. And it is decidedly not a word processor. Yes, you write in Scrivener, but it is the organizational features that make it worth learning if you have long-form writing to do.

I wrote recently about how I took some classes online during the 2017–18 school year. I was in the position of having to download scholarly journal articles, incorporate them into a written work, and use APA format to document the citations.

For the first class, I would create a new Scrivener document and then discrete sections for each 1,000-word project:

I had to compile the papers into Word documents (ugh) for submission. Scrivener was in ways overkill for these projects, as the sections weren’t very long. What I did like, though, was the ability to print journal articles to the Scrivener projects. So having a PDF of an article in a Safari window could be sent to the “Research” folder in the active Scrivener project. This made it easy to keep the research together with the project, rather than in a folder or in DEVONthink, where I’d have to look for them later. It wasn’t the only way to get the papers done, but it was a good way for me to work, and I used the first class to understand this curious app I’d heard so much about. It was a learning experience for sure.

Saving Reference Materials into Scrivener

The second class, which focused on school law, required me to write legal briefs… and lots of them. Briefs are exactly that–brief–and I had to follow a standard format for each one:

One brief would not require Scrivener’s services. But weeks four and five saw me writing 10 and 11 briefs, respectively, and I ended up writing over 40. My strategy this time was different; I collected all of the briefs by unit (each week was a new unit) in one Scrivener file, and used Scrivener’s powerful Compile feature to create a discrete Word document for each unit. Compile was possibly the most confusing feature initially, but eminently worth understanding due to the power it gave you when shaking a project down into something to share.

So the structure of the “School Law Legal Briefs” file (one file to rule them all) looked like this:

The Anatomy of a Brief

Subsequent units could be compiled into a Word doc that only included the work unique to that unit, and I could obscure or reveal as much of the previous weeks’ work as I needed. At the ending of the course, I had one project, not eight. It was a project that could have simply been done in Word or Nisus Writer Pro or Pages or Mellel or… you get the idea. But as with email, being able to restrict your focus to that which you are working on in the moment is cognitively liberating.

There’s one more thing that I will say about Scrivener: if you are a person who gets a kick of preparing something in one format, and then seeing how it comes out in another format, you would very much like Scrivener. What do I mean? For example, if you enjoy that moment when you render your code from HTML or Markdown to see if it looks how you thought it would, you know what I’m talking about. If you use a text editor and LaTexwrite in LaTex, you also know what I mean. I’m sure some people hate that feeling. But it gasses me. And that’s what Compile is like in Scrivener.

Apps that I wrote about before and continue to use:

gSuite: we use Google services at work. The sharing features and ubiquity of your files is hard to beat. And you can use any email client you want, mostly.

DEVONthink: if it doesn’t go into OmniFocus or Google Drive, it goes into DEVONthink.

TextExpander 5: I sprung for the subscription after TextExpander 5 started randomly crashing on me. I’m not inclined to call it a conspiracy but I don’t know if Smile was paying much attention to version 5 much.* It’s probably not worth the subscription cost for how I use it but it’s the only expansion utility that developers seem to support in iOS. My reliance has waned over the years as I do less overall writing.

OmniFocusOmniFocus: Still the king of GTD for me. I want to buy the new version of Things (I did get the iOS version) so that I can compare, but version OmniFocus 3’s switch to tags from contexts, and allowing for multiple tags per action item, solves the only real gripe I had with OmniFocus.

Bear: I still use this all the time for taking notes and other reference material. I struggle sometimes with deciding if something should go into DEVONthink or Bear, but it is often the first place I go when I need to type. Should Drafts ever offer an Mac OS version, though, there will be trouble.

Pixelmator: My go-to for editing images. I like Acorn too.

BBEdit: Also often the place I go to start writing. I will invoke BBEdit in LaunchBar if it’s not already running and start writing. I don’t code but I like the speed and general unfussiness associated with using BBEdit. What’s more portable than a .txt file?

BetterSnapTool: I don’t know if Apple will ever admit that Aero Snap is cool, but it is.

1Password: I downloaded the version 7 beta and decided to go for the subscription. I like the online version of the app as a backup in the event that all of my devices went up in a puff of dust. I also don’t ever want to change password managers unless something really compels me.

Launchbar: Stalwart. I don’t use many of the features but the clipboard history just saved my bacon the other day, and other features (calculator expecially) just delight me.

I like AgileBits’ offering of both standalone and subscription versions of 1Password, and I think TextExpander could offer something like that. The major feature that accompanied TextExpander’s subscription switchover–team snippits–are not useful to me at all. It’s the same app, only way more expensive.
