What's it about cloti that you like? I'm curious, bc we otherwise tend to ship the same things. I love both cloud and tifa, and they have some cute scenes, but I don't feel it with them. Idk if it's because of the truly awful shippers, or something else. For me it feels like sokai in kh 1, I see why ppl ship them and that the narrative is pushing for them to be together, but i don't really care about that aspect of their relationship. Your answer doesn't have to be elaborate or anything, it's genuinely only curiosity on my part. Other than that, how do you like rebirth so far? I know some ppl dropped it pretty fast, bc they didn't like the crazy amount of mini games. Which I get, bc some of them were a hassle, but all in all i still had fun.

Short answer: I really like their individual characters and their complicated friendship and past that Rebirth starts delving more into, and that’s made me warm up very quickly to the romance between them.

Long answer: Cloud and Tifa’s dynamic is so interesting to me in Rebirth. I feel like the game does a good job of pulling back the curtain on a relationship that up to this point has been summed up as “childhood friends” to reveal how much more complicated it is than that. Imo, these are two people who have always yearned to know each other but never really have. They were friendly when they were very young, it seems, like under the age of 7. Then, Cloud started pulling away, and Tifa has never understood why. And they haven’t been able to really reconnect since then, made all the more difficult by Sephiroth and Shinra.

FF7 pushes romantic angles with both Tifa and Aerith, which I don’t really love tbh. I do wish it was a little more toned down and optional. But I really like the sense of yearning and desire to connect that threads Cloud and Tifa’s entire relationship — and the consistent symbolism of reaching for each other, trying to bridge that physical and emotional gap between them (usually when one is about to literally or figuratively fall), that goes with it. I like watching them bond and get to know each other now, so many years later, as best as they can (considering Cloud’s memories and sense of self are all screwed up), while navigating the unique trauma of being two of the only survivors of the massacre of their village. I like their mutual support, how they take turns supporting/grounding/saving each other.

I like that memories play such a big role, that they both have precious memories of each other that are key to who they are and which no one else knows. Fucking love when Tifa falls into the Lifestream and she realizes Cloud tried to save her from crossing the metaphorical bridge of death/falling when they were kids, and you see how much the past seems to parallel the present with their roles reversed this time. I want to see the whole memory so much. I don’t know if we ever will, but man. I really feel like even if Cloud couldn’t stop Tifa from falling, he must’ve saved her from drowning. There’s a river below that bridge, right? She hit her head and presumably passed out — someone had to keep her head above water, and he was the only one there because he refused to abandon her… I think, metaphorically, that’s pretty much what’s gonna happen in the game. I don’t think Tifa is gonna be able to catch Cloud from falling, but I think she’s gonna hold his head above water when they hit the bottom.

Sorry, I’ve been thinking about this part so much shsbdbsbs I just feel like it’s so interesting and crucial to the story. I think it really helps Tifa understand what’s going on with Cloud and Sephiroth on a level the others don’t. She’s much more conscious of Cloud’s behavior and notices the distinctions between Cloud and Sephiroth. She’s usually the first to notice when something’s not right and intervene.

I like that Tifa is established as the truth to Sephiroth’s lies and the one who can kinda “wake” Cloud up because, unlike everyone else, Tifa was there when Sephiroth (and Zack and Cloud) came to town and Tifa has seen what Cloud was like before the Jenova cells/false persona (even if she’s never been able to fully understand him). She’s the only one stopping Cloud from losing complete touch with reality, which is why Sephiroth is trying to undermine her credibility and eliminate her.

Like it’s really obvious, to me, that if Cloud and Tifa could properly reconnect by finally understanding the past and each other, Sephiroth’s manipulation wouldn’t work. Like, you know in the Loveless play how the bad guy’s weakness is true love. And then the hero (Cloud) and whoever is playing the princess (I had Tifa) try to declare their love, and it doesn’t work. The bad guy just laughs and says their love is an illusion or whatever? That’s what’s going on in the game, I think. I do think they love each other, but they don’t understand each other yet, Cloud isn’t even sure who he is, his identity is scrambled eggs, so it’s not a complete or true love. They have to bridge that gap, discover the truth and really meet. You know what I mean?

I still haven’t talked about the actual romantic stuff fbdbdbsbe I’m sorry, romance is usually always secondary to me. Um. I like that Cloud initiates a lot of those intimate moments with Tifa. Other people usually invade his space and make him uncomfortable. But Tifa’s patient with him and doesn’t pressure him. He reaches out to hold her hand and hug her and stuff. He opens up to her about his doubts and fears. It’s sweet how bashful they are, how realistically awkward they are sometimes. Yeah, idk, I just think they’re neat. I want them to understand each other, finally like really know each other, and I like when they hold hands.

As for how I’m enjoying Rebirth as a game (as someone who has never played the og FF7): I’m really loving it. I think it’s so much more fun and interesting than Remake. Love the open world, the different regions, the exploration, side quests, party bonding and banter, chocobos, whatever tf is going on with those protorelics and the Queen’s Blood creator, the battle challenges, Chadley (I know he was in Remake, but I grew more attached to him in this game), the return of other old NPCs, the new ones, the fun silly stuff like the segways in Costa del Sol. Rebirth fleshes the whole world and characters out, and I’m never bored. I have very little complaints. If it sticks the landing, it might be one of my favorite video games. Rip to the mini game haters, but I’m different. (Except the piano. The piano can go fuck itself.)

i watched bleach for the first time when i was 14, i remember it was the first time i felt like so good with an anime, like when you say "damn this is what i was looking for"

i remember that at that age i didn't care that much about romance, i just liked to see ichigo fighting and i just hyped everytime i saw his inner hollow

years after that idk how but i got to know that ichigo ended up with inoue and i couldn't fucking believe it, i swear it was a shock at first but then again i didn't even care about it eventually bc i just cared about ichigo

years later i re-watched the anime as an adult and i just felt the same thing, that ichigo was so in love with rukia it fucking hurt, you know? and until that time i never read the manga, so i decided to do it (also i did it to see if ichihime's fans were right about everything they said, that in the manga you could see how ichigo "cared" about inoue)

i just can't understand what was kubo thinking about when he gave us that end for ichigo, like even if he pretended ichihime to be end game, he should have given them the same (or more) development he gave to ichiruki. because there's fucking nothing between ichigo and inoue more than a fucking friendship (i don't even know to say if even that)

i thought about all this when i saw a comment of an ichihime saying "i just hope they confirm that poem was for zangetsu and not for rukia" you know in that post where ichigo's seiyu finally gave us those LOVELY WORDS for rukia

which first doesn't make sense if you want to interpret it that way (at least for me) and second...

Wow, anon, no worries! And thanks! 😊 Even those who don't care for romance see how suspiciously romantic IR comes off as 🤭. (I'm telling u, I think most of the fanbase & their mother thought IR would end up together...)

The manga is definitely more on the nose about IchiRuki. Everything stands out more, is more emphasized. U gotta have a severe lack of reading comprehension to not see the potential between them. People who think the anime pushed IR clearly haven't read the manga; the anime only added slightly to what was already established (and the manga still did it better), such as the ice skating episode that Kub0 expressed satisfaction in 👀. He always seemed to express enjoyment with the portrayal of IR in adaptations 🤷‍♀️.

That's why I can't believe for a second that Kub0 had "always" intended IH. Everything about them screams they don't work together; they had no chemistry, no special moments, no bonding, no poems, no good teamwork, no trust, no special thoughts from Ichigo towards Ori, etc...

IchiRuki will always be the most special bond in Bl3ach. Nothing could top it. And it's not some regular friendship or rivalry bond like in other battle shounens with male characters. It's a special bond between a man & a woman who met in such a supernatural romance sort of way. Boy meets girl. Girl saves him. He saves her. Like, hello?? Heck, some people have made theories that Bl3ach is more YA fantasy or shoujo (like Ichigo being a shoujo protag) than shounen, lol.

(That's why I hate it when antis try to lump IR in with non-canon mlm ships, forcing Rukia to be just "one of the guys". They do it cuz otherwise, IchiRuki's special bond is unexplainable to them cuz wdym that Ichigo is this close to a woman that's not even his future wife— 🤪🤷‍♀️).

(On that note, one of the closest ships I've seen in animanga to the IR bond is NaLu from Fairy Tail. Ichigo ending up with Ori is like if Natsu were to end up with Lisanna 💀. Of course, FT is still ongoing so NaLu becoming canon is still on the horizon~)

Even if Kub0 ended up retconning the "speed of the world" poem to make it about Zangetsu, it still wouldn't take away from how special the IR bond was throughout the manga. Ntm, the moment Ichigo regained his powers, he immediately set down his zanpakuto on the ground to stare at Rukia longingly while everyone's watching 🤣. Yeah, he really pined after those powers & not the woman in front of him...

Glad u also think IH didn't have much of a friendship either. They always seemed more acquaintances than friends. Ori was always just there? Butting into Ichigo's business? They never bonded...

Anyway, it's ok, anon, & hope that despite it all, you can still enjoy IR 🙂.

advice column: my roommate is boy obsessed and it's kind of driving me up the wall. she calls it "husband fever" (like baby fever) and this fine, whatever, to each their own, i support women's rights and wrongs, etc. but she won't stop trying to do the same for me. my guy friend ordered me sushi as a thank you for carrying him through a coding project and she basically kept doing a conversation equivalent of "ooooooooooo do you like him", like the shit they do in middle school. she kept asking me multiple questions like if i wanted to date him or if i thought he was cute (one no should suffice. like stop asking) and it's irritating. i (mostly) like my roommate and i tolerate it, but i can't stand when she doesn't listen to me.

i think the overarching issue is that i hate having to explain myself to people who are so obsessed with romance it's almost inconceivable for men and women to be friends if one of them isn't gay. am i in the wrong here?? i'm so sick of having to be on edge every time i try to talk about a friend that happens to be a dude. not only is is really amatonormative, i just think it's tacky to think of men as some strange separate entity that can only ever be useful for dating/marriage/sex. they're just people. he's my friend. there is nothing else to it.

the pacing was great, yk how it kinda starts off a little unserious but then it takes a darker turn

i was getting pretty anxious that loki may actually kill sylvie since not only that would have been neccessary for the plot, but also could serve as some sort of "metaphor/symbolism" for reincarnation that loki have to kill his old self (yes i say old cuz sylvie technically still has the similar negative traits loki did in 2012 and has overcome them by now) but i'm glad they found another way... pheww 😮‍💨

when loki said "for you, for all of us" i think we all had flashbacks to one of the saddest scenes of loki in thor (2011) when he was talking to odin and-

Hey its been a while. Spektor-anon. Life got kinda crazy which is why i havent reached out to talk about how much i love mash (i love it very muchly) i watched thru the rest of it! Loved it!! Youre right tho, the show punishes hawkeye too much. Like i agree he was a self important self righteous dude who sometimes needed to be taken down a peg, but also hes self righteous and CORRECT. war bad. War bad!!! It rlly took me out when they had an episode where hawk has to like???? Apologize to a general or something for being too disrespectful like NO!!! Mash is supposed to be totally skeptical of the respect ppl thoughtlessly pay the military. Even when margaret started getting character development id always felt that while the show respected her careerism, for the most part the show took her military zeal to be sort of to her detriment. Like her competence and comittment to excellence in a male centered world is commendable but her jingoism and thoughtless obedience to order is a flaw- a flaw they personalize to her bad relationship with her dad. The show comes to the conclusion she needs to learn how to be less starry eyed and to get her self worth somewhere other than her father and i feel like it comes to that conclusion visavis her relationship to the military as well. Love that. So why punish hawkeye is my thing? Feels like a fumble in the antiwar show to shit on the antiwar guy for being too antiwar >:>[.

Also also gfa? Gfa! My beloved gfa!!! Hawkeye has a mental breakdown and no one is equipped to deal with it least of all bj? Exquisite. Ruining music for charles by indelibly associating it with war!! Amazing! (It really figures that he would only be capable of respecting an asian man if that asian man has command over western culture aka mozart, but i still think it deals a blow to his western elitism all the same which i count as a win) also amazing- margaret and charles's send off!!! Klinger and Soon Lee was heart healing. Finally in the very last episode mash gives us a little depth to korean characters. Thank god. I love klinger in love. I love their romance its so compelling. Also also also the mulcahy stuff was so so heart breaking and brilliant and i love it. I love that bj is the only one who knows! No one else knows!!! I love all these missed moments of connection. Mash rlly knows how to make the moments of connection (the mozart. The poetry book. The goodbye note) hit and it does it in part by also giving you moments of missed opportunity in spades (bj cant rlly support hawk the way he needs and he cant be honest. Mulcahy never heards hawks parting words and in turn hawkeye never knows that. And he never knows why. And everyone is parting ways mostly forever. And you as an audience get to know some of the side characters who never got any play before for a brief shining second and then theyre gone and you know they had a full life and perspective that you never got to see and never will aka that one nurse "i think ive had it" line)

if i'm being fully honest i don't really remember the episode you're talking about - i recall a couple where hawkeye went head to head with a general and was forced to stand down or something like that but i don't think the show ever punished him for his antiwar position? the most its ever done was show him as someone who's swinging at windmills i think

you're so right about the missed moments and i'm glad you liked gfa vvgfgfhfgh!! mash is so good at creating a sense of bittersweetness, its genuinely one of its best qualities. they're having fun watching a movie but the casualties are inevitably coming etc etc. and charles is just..... i know the music is the literal thing he loses in gfa but i like to interpret it as him losing his sense of self and his place in the world (charles class consciousness era)

I saw your take on how we have to stop using shipping goggles for everything because it misses out on the nuance of a lot of relationships and I agree so much! Especially with Kaveh and Alhaitham who are everything and more. It's best summed up in Kaveh's voiceline about Alhaitham "It's complicated." They were friends, best friends, who had a horrible falling out and then spent the next years arguing with each other in academic papers. And then Alhaitham found Kaveh in a tavern and immediately knew that he was in trouble and Kaveh, even though they were no longer friends, told him everything even though he's not comfortable with doing that. And then Alhaitham took him home. They are mirrors and foils who exist to show each other their flaws and strengths and their hypocrisies and every little thing in between. They are each others closest person in this life and they will never find another person who understands them like they do or who can *truly* see right through them like they do. They have hurt each other but came back together regardless and they care about each other so so much. The misunderstandings are still there and it's hard because they want to be that close again but they don't know how to get back there so they just bicker and bring each other food and turn their house into a home. This complexity is really lost when you view it as only romantic because they were first and foremost best friends who were partners. And it's simultaneously a mix of platonic/romantic and a third other thing. Sorry this is getting really long but I love your posts and analyses, and yeah Kaveh and Alhaitham are so much more then just ao3 romance tropes (like their annoying fanon selves will lead you to believe) and they're relationship timeline is a tragedy and it's so complex and so interesting to think about. I really want to die when I think about them for too long. They make each other better and that's just the facts and when they go home at the end of the day it's to each other where they help each other understand the other side of the mirror, the other half of the world. Like that can't just be summarized as either strictly platonic or romantic, it's just so much more!!

they cant really stand to call each other friends, but if you looked at a list of things friends do for each other, they do it all. they pack leftovers for each other and worry about each other and know about the other’s schedules and careers. alhaitham picks kaveh up at the tavern whenever hes too drunk to get home by himself. in alhaithams story quest, as soon as kaveh got all his comments out, he asked alhaitham if he was okay. alhaitham even allows kaveh to just redecorate their house as he pleases. kaveh obviously isnt just a tenant. and the reason they bicker so languidly is because they know so much about each other. its easy to find areas to make jabs at because they know each other best, more than anyone

because theyre mirrors, they have more insight into each other than anyone else. if they reflect upon their own actions compared to the other, theyll find that theyre simply the equal and opposite reaction. im really excited to see kaveh in the event and his eventual hangout. i would love for more things to pick apart and analyze concerning him and the most important person in his life

i would just like to rant for a sec about kpop groups not be able to sing. i’ve stanned btob for a while now and have always liked groups that have good vocals and when they joined kingdom i was like eh sure i’ll watch some old men hang out with the kids.

btob rearranges their own songs to make them easier to perform live, what were they thinking.... btob has like 5 way easier titles... for example: if they did 2nd confession... chill song with a+ line distribution and it's still not boring. i'd say 'respect' and go my merry way. even thriller would be a better choice but it still has bits that aren't as easy as they seem

btob titles.. starting with winters tale and ending with show your love... they are all tailor made for them. eunkwang is the one who oversees part distribution. that's why their songs seem easy... they are made for them and them only idc! that's the truth. not every group has 4 v good vocalists plus rappers than can carry a tune and have a clear diction.

Hi I hope this doesn’t sound weird, but is it odd that I really wish everyone around me knew I was demiromantic ace? Only my mom knows and I really wish I could tell my friends but I rly don’t think they’d take it seriously. Yet it’s like, I wish ppl knew bc it “explains” so much about why I hate being teased abt not-crushes and such, or why I feel disconnected and even uncomfortable with romance discussions? I don't think it's odd. Being understood and open is something that a lot of people want or find important. And it's one of the big reasons why a lot of people do choose to come out.

To be clear the general advice, 'you don't have to come out if you don't want to' isn't saying you shouldn't come out, or anti-coming out in general. But more that coming out should be something you do for yourself because you want to, not something you should feel obligated to do. A lot of people people choose to come out for very good reasons, and wanting to be understood and wanting to be open with their identity are two of them.

It is hard to navigate, because you're right that sometimes people will be dismissive, won't take the time to actually understand your labels, etc. And there's always pros and cons to weigh, and there's no wrong choice to make except what feels wrong to you. My general advice though is if you do choose to come out to your friends, try and get a support group in place first. And that can even just be joining an online ace/aro group who'll support you, and having people in your corner who do understand your labels can make a huge difference. Having your mom to support you can help a lot too.

Another is when it comes to less understood identities especially, sometimes it's easier to come out to one person at a time. Make your coming out a conversation where they're invited to give their thoughts and ask questions. Some people are always going to be dismissive/believe what they want to, but I've definitely found this is more likely to be successful than coming out to a group at once, especially if anyone in that group undermines you at all.

With Vil having trust issues, I can tell he's gonna have a hard time finding a lover, we all know this tv drama cliches of celebrities having lovers who are either too obsessed with them or just in it for the money. I know romance isn't a subplot in Twst but I really wanna see a more different side to Vil when caring for someone in a way without his mentor syndrome.

i'm sorry but this is the point where i'd say i'm so sick of modern people's inability to sympathize without empathizing, to wanting to relate, like man can't you tell you are being supported even if they don't get you? that they care? and sometimes with empathy ppl can know how to harm you precisely? relatibility is so overrated in these modern days and I hate it. sympathy is just so dead these days even if empathy is put on pedestal. You're telling me you don't care about those war veteran's pain since you can't relate to them to experience real war zone? or cannot sympathize with natural disaster victim since you haven't experience it yourself?

And even then, going back to Vil, he does empathize. he empathize with people wanting to be strong, to live in this cruel world and trying their best to survive for it's what he has been doing . It's why he has that mentor syndrome, so that he knows people he cares can survive without him watching over them like helicopter parent, so that they can defend themselves without having codependency on him. And again, it's not like he couldn't tell if honest, kind souls are being there, other than Rook, there is also Trey, he appreciates back Trey care for him , he also appreciates Kalim, Deuce, Jack and Silver's honesty. So he wouldn't have that hard time to find a lover, since he can see a honest soul if he did see one.

maria di angelo, i don't think would have done it. one, because she's dead, and nico is a kid who was propelled to the future. he needs a support system. but also, if that wasn't the case. if say, she was alive, i still don't think she'd do it. because hades very obviously was in love with her, and loves his children. she wouldn't deny them that connection--because she loves them too. it's a hard life, sure, but it was one rich with love.

Marie Levesque. i don't think she OR Beryl Grace would do it. Beryl because her children are solid proof of HER connection to Zeus. He came back for her TWICE. she wanted the glitz and glam that comes from being loved by the king of the gods, but all she got was the tragedy. Marie Levesque is in a somewhat similar boat. besides, she was a student of magic as well. the connection to the other is always going to be important to her. and Hazel's gift/curse is going to be coveted as well.

julian ramirez arellano, i dont think he would either. before becoming a mania, before the PTSD of Iraq, he was described as gentle and loving. when coming back, he started a relationship with bellona again. i think his love for her would keep him from severing the connection hylla and reyna would have to her.

now. for emily zhang and esperanza valdez. these are the two i believed would have. potentially done so. emily, if it was when frank was first born, because by giving him a normal life, severed by all connection to the gods, he would no longer have his life tied to a piece of firewood. however, she is dead, and frank is alone. he needs support, she wants him to be happy, and he gets it, through New Rome, as a Praetor, and through his relationship with Hazel and his bond with Percy. so ultimately, she wouldn't.

esperanza though, i feel would. she just wants her baby to have a fucking break. BUT. again. i think this is Pre-HoO. after that. i dont think so, because again. support system. regardless, im choosing esperanza, as i believe she has the most chance.

I would like some shoujo recs! I haven't read any in a longtime. I don't mind if they have love triangles or love quadrangles as long as the dynamics are good.

i’m sorry for getting to this late! and i hope it’s okay to rec some josei as well, the only difference between shoujo and josei strictly speaking is the age demographic, otherwise both traditionally cater towards women (not that other ppl can’t read these obv!) 

princess tutu (anime) - this is one of the greatest pieces of shoujo i’ve ever been exposed to. it centers on a rly clever and cathartic adaptation of the swan lake mythos, and what’s most interesting about it is its focus on storytelling. the primary tag line of the show is “may those who accept their fate be granted happiness. may those who defy their fate be granted glory”. it’s all about the characters making choices and realizing their own ability to write the story that follows, rather than remaining shackled to the insidious story penned by the primary villain, drosselmeyer. the relationships are complex and dark but also rly healing in the long run, and the ballet aesthetics are exquisite! 

kanata kara (manga) - this isekai manga centers on noriko, a girl suddenly dropped into an alternate world where she’s referred to as “the awakening”, fated to awaken the monstrous sky demon. everyone in this world is bent on getting “the awakening” first to use it to their own benefit, but noriko is actually found by the sky demon, a boy named izark, and they start to travel together through various countries while on the run. the rly charming point of kanata kara is that noriko doesn’t magically know the language of the world, she has to learn it entirely from scratch. she’s also someone who works rly hard to be useful and a source of solid support for izark and the friends she makes, and i think that coupled with the narrative message of each person having their part to play in the betterment of the world is rly inspiring to read about 

akagami no shirayukihime (anime/manga) - shirayuki is a girl with rly vibrant red hair, and the prince of her country wants her as his concubine bc of it, so she decides to run away to the neighboring country. there she meets the country’s second prince, zen, along with his friends at the palace, and she makes a new living for herself as a palace pharmacist. it’s a rly sweet manga that i appreciate for delving into the behind the scenes part of court politics, particularly bc we tend to think that fantasies imply battles, but that’s not necessarily the end all, be all of relations between countries. there’s also a wonderful focus on shirayuki’s work as a pharmacist, and how her knowledge of plants and medicinal herbs helps her support zen as he works to become a prince more involved with his people 

legend of basara (manga) - this series focuses on a post apocalyptic japan ruled by an oppressive emperor. a child of prophecy is fated to be born into a village and save the country, and when twins are born, the villagers assume the brother is the fated savior. when they grow up, however, one of the emperor’s sons, the red king, kills the brother, and so his sister, sarasa, has to pretend she’s the one who died so she can carry on the revolution as her brother, else all hope is lost. all of this is tied in with the fact that in her rare free time, sarasa happens to meet a boy named shuri, who is actually the red king! neither of them know each other’s real identities or that they’re the ones facing each other on the battlefield, so it makes for a rly angty romance, coupled in with excellent political commentary on privilege and oppression. shuri has one of the best antagonist to protagonist developments i’ve ever seen, and sarasa is a great example of a character vested with so much responsibility, who wants to bring her people to freedom but also be just a normal girl 

honey and clover (anime/manga) - this is one of my all time favorites! it follows some university students attending art school and their day-to-day life as they struggle to create, maintain relationships with each other, graduate, etc. i think chica umino’s works in general can be exemplified by her portrayal of every day life, and how it’s not so mundane and actually carries a lot of emotion. there’s so much catharsis present in this work for me bc it really reaches out to people who feel lost of purposeless or alone in their lives and feel like they have no reason to continue creating or moving forward. i think it also has a rly realistic portrayal of romance in the sense that its focus is on how characters grow through romance rather than whether they end up with a certain person. esp if you’re a college student, i think it’ll rly resonate with you 

kobato (manga) - this was serialized in a seinen magazine for some reason but i think most ppl agree it feels shoujo in delivery. it’s probably my personal favorite clamp work. the floral aesthetics and artwork of angels is absolutely gorgeous, and it features a rly endearing story about a girl, kobato, who must collect “healed hearts” in a bottle in order to return to a certain place. i can’t really reveal what i most enjoy about it without giving away serious spoilers, but there’s that classic clamp execution of the binding nature of contracts and weighing the things we want against the things we must do, which makes for some rly heartfelt, angsty progressions. mostly i just love seeing the narrative unfold kobato, as she starts off as is this seemingly naive girl who we come to realize is actually hurting deeply inside

lovely complex (anime) - this is a classic so if you’ve already heard of it i wouldn’t be surprised but nonetheless it’s probably my favorite in that area of early 00s shoujo romcoms. the story follows risa and otani, who are known as a comedic duo in their high school bc she’s unusually tall and he’s unusually short. there’s lots of gags and kidding around, but ultimately the story delves into how both of them subconsciously fall for each other despite treating each other like gag men at first. there’s comedic love triangles and plenty of miscommunication galore, but i think it takes these shoujo tropes and puts a rly refreshing twist on them that drives you crazy in a way that’s actually very entertaining. the infamous bear curry gag has practically been immortalized in shoujo fandom 

yumeiro patissiere (manga) - this is another one most people have probably heard of BUT, that’s usually bc of the anime. the manga is actually much shorter and different in some ways, and at the end of the day i think i prefer it, esp art wise as the charm in matsumoto’s art style is just impossible to replicate anywhere else. it follows a girl named ichigo, who has a very sensitive taste palate and is spontaneously selected to attend a patissieres academy, despite the fact that she can’t cook for shit! she’s placed in the a-level class alongside the academy’s three genius students, commonly called the “sweets princes”, and they befriend and gradually help her hone her skills until she’s at a level where she can compete with them on a team. all in all it’s a rly endearing story about perseverance, hard work, and the desire to make ppl happy with the food you make for them (kitchen princess is also a predecessor to this series that i think may even have heavily inspired it and i would recommend it, too! it’s just a little on the darker side in terms of dramatics) 

this is just the start of a list tbh but these are some of my all time favorites that came to mind! do let me know if you try out and enjoy any of them, i would love to hear about it ❤️

I tend to think the same way! Can we have a romance free season, there is more to life. But then ppl hit me with this is the first potentially non-binary character rep in the skamverse, it would be unfair and very sus if they are the first to not have a love interest. first of all, it's so nice that there's actually a bigger community, especially on Tumblr, that agrees on. thee idea of a romance free season.

honestly, i am convinced that not giving Ismail a love interest wouldn't even be unfair, especially because we are assuming. that. their season will revolve around their toxic friendship with constanpain. i saw someone posting about how they might us lou as a common love interest for consti und Ismail to get a reason for them to disagree on so their friendship finds an end instead of addressing Constantin's actual toxic behaviour directly and I really hope that they won't use a love interest for this, but this (no matter if lou, sascha or someone we don't know yet is the love interest) would be the easiest way for the writers, which is the first reason why i really hope that there won't be a love interest in this season.

on another note: even though the community on Tumblr is convinced that Ismail is non-binary, most of the comments in German assume that they identify as a cis boy, so especially if the writers have decided to put the into a straight presenting relationship (= with lou, yara or anyone else who is presenting as female) this would sorta add to the idea that Ismail is cis, even if they get confirmed as non-binary.

besides that, i am personally unhappy with the idea of a relationship being positively connotated again, especially in the context of Ismail trying to get out of a toxic friendship. they could develop a co-dependency to their potential partner and we don't want that. in addition to that, I believe that friends can be a better support system than most relationship are.

lastly, and this point is probably the only one that i'm not discussing here: i'm currently also graduating from German high school and in the same school situation as the druck main, and i honestly have to say that relationships are more uncommon in my age group than you might expect. especially open queer people usually get their first serious experiences in their 20s and honestly, i think it's imply time for pop culture to normalise this. i think Ismail would be a great. character to use to focus on platonic love, especially since their past with platonic relationships is just not the best one.

I feel your struggle. I'm also contemplating watching the drama. I was a kdrama enthusiast but college romance era is over for me. I don't have the energy to watch them anymore. I mean I can't even finish all the popular dramas nowadays. I don't even watch squid game can u believe that? The bigger reason might be due to me shifting to English period drama but anywayss,,

Based on the snippets that I've seen, I think it might be a really good college romance drama. College dramas with more than one pairing are usually more interesting based on what I've watched before. Plus, they got really good castings. Most of the actors have considerably good experience and I recognize two of them that I'd consider rising stars as they were involved in well-received projects before. I was actually kinda shocked to see them there. There's a good chance that the plot would be good. Or if the plot is cliche, the way it is written and delivered might be good.

A lot of factors can be counted in for the success of a project. It might be the script, the well-developed plot, the actor's performance, the director's popularity, etc. In Dear M's case, the actors' popularity has already brought a good start to the drama. An over-told story can be interesting if they know how to deliver it properly. Take a look at fairytales. There are so many versions of it but people are still supporting the movies (it might be due to it being nostalgic but do tell me any other examples, can't come up with anything else rn). I would recommend the drama to anyone who wanna watch light youth romance.

The same goes for Do's drama. It's kinda funny to see them acting the same role as the one-sided pining best friend. The comparison side by side would be hilarious. From what I can see so far, Jeong Shiho's personality is colder than Cha Min Ho's. Min Ho's personality is kinda similar to playful Jaehyun and since we don't see a lot of playful Jaehyun (you have to be an avid fan to properly see that), I can see how this drama can intrigue more ppl with this dual personality. I see a few ppl joking that Jae doesn't need to prepare much because the character is quite similar to him. Nonetheless, it's Jae's first acting roleeee, ppl are so excited. I'm excited. But I'll be cheering from the sidelines, I just can't watch more kdramaaa

p.s. if do or jae is casted in shows like Designated Survivors: 60 days I would definitely watch it. Manifesting...

I think both Jae and Do will go for more action/drama driven, big cast series where they can play sons or maknaes in working teams in the future. They need acting experience first, they get the romantic lead roles because they are idols and offer their popularity in exchange for the patience towards their inexperience and bad acting. Their roles also help with their straight images, I'm sure it's one of the main goals for the management and them.

I dropped Squid game. It's hard for me to finish any Korean series, tbh. I dropped all those I tried following Do's recommendation.

I guess the one that got the most scarred for me is izuku, this thing just makes me dgaf about him -he is just literally a hetero man who, after focusing solely in his career, hears someone talking about romance and thinks he should go for a woman he used to be close to in high school and blush around in the first semester, because it could be something he is missing out or some shit. Even less than the bare minimum, fuck that man honestly, wtf you mean you only "realize" you want to talk to someone more, implying romance, bc of 1 your childhood friend telling you to LITERALLY APPRECIATE THE PPL WHO ARE ACTUALLY AROUND YOU 2 some old classmates are talking about romance and inevitability, and 3 BC THE VILLAIN YOU TRIED TO SAVE AND DIED 8 YEARS AGO TOLD YOU TO "DO YOUR BEST"??? Wtf man?? And the possible implication of him treating strangers just like his close friends??? Dude, wtf??? I thought he cared about his people more and had a selfish side he hid, I thought he had depth and complexity... but apparently not? apparently he hears about romance and now that he has a career and has achieved his heroic dreams, he can now check the romance box, he can now think about her even if neither didnt even try to reach out. Even tho they constantly need other ppl pushing them towards each other, bc them, by themselves, are way too weak as a pair. If nobody makes them get closer, they cant even begin to work as friends according to 431.

Ochako also hurts so much... she is what, just fem!deku but with no agency? she has to end up with deku, but even tho her arc was about confessing her feelings with her whole face, nah, she cant even try it, she has to hear HIM, who always moves first, and she has to agree with it instead.

How tf can I love these characters when this is where they end?

man, it really did suck the fun of it all -I just highly highly dislike who Izuku, Himiko and Ochako are in 431. Is this how im supposed to read their stories? Is that the "obvious, natural" conclusion to the characters? So empty, so useless, what's the point of this?
