As brave and heartbreaking as Eponine's defiance of her father is here-- I think it's crucial that Eponine doesn't scream and summon The World in this chapter.

On the practical front, it would of course be so much worse for Valjean and Cosette if the cops and all Society were brought to their garden gate. Valjean,of all people, might be able to handle the Patron Minette-- but he can't handle public scrutiny. The criminals are less dangerous than the cops, and that's a running theme for him.

But for Eponine herself, I think it's maybe even more important. She's calling up symbolism here that links her hard with Javert; the dog child of a wolf, ready to turn their own father over to the law.

But while I certainly believe Eponine would , she doesn't. She gives her dad the small kindness of a chance to run away. Unlike Javert, she's not interested in punishing him just to see him punished. She really is focusing first on protecting the little sliver of a world she's decided to guard.

I really think this is key to why Eponine , for all her confusion, and for all she's about to make some major bad calls, ends up avoiding the lonely deaths she's forecasting for herself ; her life is not going be long or happy, but it will not be quite the ending she expects, and I think , by the power of the narrative, it's because she's willing to withhold social destruction from others.

im 31, almost 32. the other day a poet was blasted online because at her "big age", she had written a poem about feeling unloved. top comment was "this woman is 29 by the way." this woman is too old to still be useful, by the way. she has to behave better . maybe if she was a good wife and mother she could stop existing loudly, and the story could continue on without her. this woman has served her purpose, by the way. she's so cringe, by the way. at 29 - so old! - she still hasn't figured out that her existence should be one of shame.

THIS is how marcille reacts when Falin is predictably just as enthusiastic about eating monsters as her brother was.

That is not the face of a woman who thinks this trait is lovely and endearing as long as it's exhibited by the girl she loves. That is the face of a woman who is taking 7d8 psychic damage and yet knows deep in her heart she won't like Falin any less for it.

The way young Marcille reacts to Falin eating berries Marcille can't recognize but Falin knows are safe is pretty similar to how she reacts to eating monsters years later, albeit with more fear than disgust. The difference in her relationships with Laios and Falin isn't just that she's attracted to Falin, it's because the Touden siblings, while similar, are in fact different people. Not just genderswaps of each other.

Also, I think you all already know this, but just to say it: she doesn't actually hate Laios for any of his freak tendencies either. He's one of her best friends. She's just a lot quicker to be outwardly exasperated with him while she's quieter about it with Falin.
