this just as an aside but i love how it’s never specified how old brünnhilde is in relation to her sisters. older sister? younger sister? middle sister? i’ve come to think every soprano gets to decide this for herself and we get lots of variations as a result. anne evans and camilla nylund have a sense of measured caution to them, as if they’re used to being the voice of reason to a bunch of arguing girls and that’s very older sister of them. irene theorin and catherine foster have a bit of immaturity left in them but have grown out of the playfulness: middle sisters. evelyn herlitzius and gwyneth jones have extreme i-can-get-away-with-murder Youngest Sister Energy. hildegard behrens is oddly hard to categorise. she’s not quite such a wild child as the other Youngest Sisters(tm) but there’s a sense of frailty in her voice that makes me think of the german word “nesthäkchen”, which roughly translates to “baby of the family”. either she’s the youngest or she never grew to be the responsible oldest sister. i love all my flavours of brünnhilde

All the final scenes from each of the operas from the Ring Cycle - who wins?
Götterdämmerung is just pure epicness :D Walküre is a strong second. Rheingold is great when I’m ironing. Siegfried just goes on forever. I heard ONE performance where the final duet was a revelation, with Christian Franz and Evelyn Herlitzius, they were magic.

Check out this pictures of the Metropolitan Opera Hause François Girard’s production of “Parsifal” by Richard Wagner. The singers are tenor Klaus Florian Vogt, as Parsifal, Evelyn Herlitzius is Kundry, and Peter Mattei and René Pape bring back their highly praised interpretations of Amfortas and Gurnemanz, respectively. All conducted by Yannick Nézet-Séguin

@dichterfuerstin thanks for the tag :) here goes:
1. How did you discover Wagner’s music?
My dad and I went to see Tannhäuser together. He hadn’t listened to Wagner in years, I had never, it was just an experiment. (we also nearly weren’t let in because we were late. oops.)
2. Do you have a favourite opera? Which one?
Parsifal. The number two spot varies according to my mood and the production.
3. Favourite production of your favourite opera?
Parsifal 2013/2018 revival at the Met. Its symbolism is visually stunning and atmospheric, suits the opera, and places lots of emphasis on the singers, who were all 110% their characters musically and dramatically. But I also have to mention the Bayreuth 2017 Meistersinger because whenever I see that one, Meistersinger is firmly my second-favourite opera. It’s so witty and designed to make you uncomfortable, which actually helped me understand Meistersinger better.
4. Your favourite part of the Ring cycle?
This one was super hard. I’ve always loved Rheingold, recently developed a late but intense appreciation for Walküre, was quite entertained by Siegfried while nurturing a solid dislike of the title character, and Götterdämmerung is exciting but also saddening because it’s the last one. Concerning scenes, it would be easier to mention the ones I don’t like than the ones I like best.
5. Favourite Leitmotif?
Fine, THIS one is really hard. For knocking on doors as a secret code, the Nibelheim motif. But yeah, also the nature-related ones from Rheingold.
6. Favourite characters?
In no particular order: Beckmesser, Sachs, Wotan, Brünnhilde, Kundry, Amfortas.
7. Favourite soprano?
Anja Harteros, Lise Davidsen (judging from the sound, they may be celestial beings) and Evelyn Herlitzius (definitely not a celestial being, but the raw dramatic energy is just unsurpassable)
8. Favourite Alto or Mezzo-Soprano?
Hm. Christa Ludwig.
9. Favourite Tenor?
I like baritones so much that sometimes I just slip right past the tenors. But Klaus Florian Vogt is awesome, sporadically Jonas Kaufmann, and from the dead tenors club, probably Jon Vickers.
10. Favourite Baritone?
Forever and always: Michael Volle
New addition: Tomasz Konieczny
Desperately want to see more of: Johannes Martin Kränzle because he’s such a scene stealer as Beckmesser.
11. Favourite Bass?
René Pape. Georg Zeppenfeld also has my admiration as of late.
12. Favourite conductor?
Yannick Nezet-Seguin, Philippe Jordan. Christian Thielemann has also piqued my interest. Also, considering that his Ring cycle is a go-to for me, Karajan deserves a mention.
13. Give us an unpopular opinion!
I find Wagner’s libretti to be very good. Sometimes I read them like a play and hum along if I’m nostalgic. They’re very dense and every sentence expresses something specific, so you can’t take any of it away without losing meaning. And he makes up his own words to express specific ideas and persons, which tbh, I’d do that too. I also quite agree with @enricodandolo on this one.
14. Tell us about your favourite Wagner-related experience!
Managed to get tickets to Bayreuth once. I was internally screaming for months and researched obsessively and tried not to excitement-explode all over my parents. Best few days ever.
— this tag was really fun! Unfortunately, I’m a bit lost concerning who to tag. Anyone who sees this, go for it!

Some favorite opera characters and favorite performers of those roles!
ah, the tenants that live rent-free in my head 24/7. apologies in advance that they're 88,889% wagner.
- wotan. i love him, even though he's a gigantic walking problem on two legs. i don't actually have an absolute favourite performer though?! want to see tomasz konieczny's wotan live VERY badly right now. he's excellent :')
- gwyneth jones or evelyn herlitzius as brünnhilde. tragic girl and excellent character that she is. funny because jones and herlitzius are quite alike: they both seem very young, lively, and they both have huge, metallic-sounding voices whose actual beauty is debatable, but are undeniably expressive.
- siegmund and sieglinde sung by peter hofmann and jeannine altmeyer. the absolute closest anyone ever came to playing the twins the way i image them. the only problem with this is that you can't get one without the other. they're one entity now. sorry, i don't make the rules.
- johannes martin kränzle as sixtus beckmesser, patron saint of this blog. it's not like jmk is only beckmesser to me (he's alberich. and probably lots of other things if they'd fcKING RECORD HIM MORE OFTEN). it's more that no one else is beckmesser except for jmk. (which is literally true. he is everywhere)
- michael volle as hans sachs. same as above - volle is also lots of other people, but any other hans sachs has to try very hard to convince me.
- peter mattei as amfortas. he is scarily good at suffering. i don't think i've ever seen an amfortas who was so present in this character's physical pain, never forgetting it even for a half-second, even putting its effects into his voice, as mattei was.
- evelyn herlitzius as kundry. she was so delightfully cursed, clever, mildly unhinged, and right between human and otherwordly. (i haven't heard gwyneth jones in the role yet, but i'm thinking...)
- Željko Lučić as macbeth. he was my first macbeth and there's something about him that already spells doomed from the first scene.

that’s a bit of a problem
EVELYN HERLITZIUS MY BELOVED
ma’am. he is not married to YOU. there is a difference.
TELL HER OFF KÁT’A
we love gutsy girls in opera
yeah how could anyone not love corinne winters? (also varvara is def bi)
janacek is a MASTER at orchestral writing
adorable!
this is a mood
“who am i to be your judge? i have my sins too.” EXACTLY
okay also that sweater is cute i want it
she’s so afraid of herself :(
LET HER GO
the world’s most passive aggressive game of telephone
“you do NOT bump into me”
“gee sorry”
awkward handshake time
