of all the things to fell her, evie doesn't expect it to be a sai. an ancient one at that. the scholar part of her could appreciate the weapon for it's historical value, if it hadn't just pierced her abdomen with a breath taking accuracy. somewhere to her left, bastet positively yowls in pain.

her focus had been on defending from approaching mercenaries that she hadn't noticed one sneaking behind them. instincts she hadn't known she carried had kicked in and she'd grabbed anything from the tomb she could find to defend herself, which had been an ancient spear. it had done the job to dispatch most of the group - at least the ones lee hadn't shot.

warm blood seeps through her fingers as she presses against her abdomen, trying to keep herself from immediately bleeding out. it's hard; she swings her weapon vaguely in the direction of the man but misses and stumbles, collapsing to her knees. pain radiates in her middle, threatening to overwhelm her, and evie uses the end of the spear to keep herself upright on her knees. her gaze instinctively tries to find lee in the mayhem, but the mercenary doesn't seem to want to give up until she's dead. she manages another swing of the spear and it knocks him off his feet after connecting with his legs - she repays the favor by shoving the pointed end into his chest with every ounce of energy she has left.

even dying, she refuses to allow the artifacts of this tomb to be taken by gutless men who don't even know the significance of what they've got. adrenaline wearing off quickly, pain consumes her wholly and she collapses into the dirt with another gasp of pain. everything around her seems to slow, like the world is trudging through a thick mud. she tries to blink it away, but that seems to take too much effort. even breathing is suddenly a labor and despite her best attempts, evie cannot quite catch air into her lungs.

Welcome back to Fictional Friday, where I recommend items from Newberry Digital Collections to fictional characters. I'm currently focusing on iconic librarians, which brings me to the icon of my childhood: Evelyn Carnahan from The Mummy.

Evy may have accidentally resurrected a homicidal mummy, but she's also never done anything wrong, ever. I would share this 1565 map of northeastern Africa and part of the Middle East with her. Evelyn "Evie" Carnahan | The Mummy, The Mummy Returns

Evie is such an icon. At first, she's set up as only book smart, even slightly clumsy, but she's much more than that. She is strong and funny and subverts all the tropes. Damsel in distress? Yes, but then she can fight back! The brains! Yes, but she also makes mistakes. A mother! Yes, but she is not just a mother. She's the true heart of the films.

I was obsessed with these films when I was a young teen. And the cliche of The Mummy cast helping a whole generation realize that they are bi is true for me too.

This is a year-long commitment but I'm up for the challenge.
