Your stomach twists, jaw clenched with a sob trapped in your throat.

You didn't want to cry, you didn't want to feel like screaming, but you couldn't stop yourself. Your tears are hot against your cheeks and despite trying to keep quiet, your sniffles are loud and the squeakiest bits of your sobs escape your lips. You were so grateful to the universe to let you be alone when you finally broke down. Seeing Vinny looking at you would make you sad and HABIT would just make it worse, in one way or another. Thinking about anything HABIT would do just to see you cry more made you sob harder, the sound loud and almost echoing in the empty space.

You hated what your life was now. You wanted your old house back; the house that didn't lead you to someone else's bathroom depending on what door you opened. You wanted your friends back; Jessa's death left you distraught and the deaths of Stephanie and Jeff weren't any better. And gods, Evan. You missed him and the life the two of you had together.

Every time you saw him in the last few years, he just looked so broken that it hurt you to look at him. He was so exhausted and confused and so clearly traumatized. Pulling Evan into your arms and just letting him sob was the least you could do. You hated that the man you loved was in this position. It was so unfair and there was nothing you could do. Especially when he looked at you and asked what HABIT put you through while in his body. You could never get out of telling him, and you would both be stuck trying to cling to the other, despite Evan wanting to avoid you due to shame.

"Baby, you okay?" You gasp at the voice you hear, everything in your body suddenly freezing in surprise.

Baby. Baby, not Bunny.

Despite the tears in your eyes, you still look up to see the love of your life. Or at least what looked like him. The pet name gave you hope, but you weren't sure yet. No matter how broken down you were, you weren't going to let your guard down.

He slowly crouches down next to you and you fight the urge to flinch away. If it was Evan like it seemed, you didn't want to hurt him. You would rather finally die than hurt Evan more than HABIT and the universe already have (and inevitably will in the future). The grip you had around yourself loosened, though, and your sobs were reduced to little sniffles and hiccups.

Once Evan was on the ground, he carefully reached a hand out to you, not touching you until you gave some kind of okay. You looked at his outstretched hand and let out a deep breath. You had no idea what the breath was for, but you knew you needed to get it out. Carefully, you placed your hand in his palm.

The person in front of you looked like Evan. Even with the slight rasp in his voice, he still felt like Evan. HABIT's somehow lower voice always warped Evan's in his limited time back in his own body.

You wanted to scold yourself for relaxing so quickly. You shouldn't have and you knew that, but you couldn't help it. It was Evan, and at the end of the day, he was all you wanted. His comfort, his love, to see him smile again. You would take what you could get. After a moment of neither of you saying anything or even really moving, Evan opened himself up a bit more, pulling you into his lap, holding your balled up body in his arms.

With that comfort, your tears came back. You felt safe. You knew you were safe. Evan holding you was all you needed to feel even close to normal again. "Oh, baby, you're okay." You sigh in relief at his words. You would be okay. You were okay.

You nodded into the crook of his neck before taking a deep, shaky breath and pulled away to look at him. His eyes looked dark and his face seemed indifferent, but you didn't fully trust it. You still had tears in your eyes and your head was beginning to pound. You had the love of your life back with you and that was all that mattered to you.

Evan looked down at you and his eyes seemed to soften a little. The hand that was higher on your back moved to the back of your neck, carefully moving his thumb against the back of your neck as though he was trying to ease the tension. Before you could even begin to smile at the man holding you, the rest of his fingers wrapped around your neck, a firm, threatening pressure sinking into your skin. You couldn't process what was happening.

Evan kept looking at you, malice filling his gaze and the grin that was forming on his lips. You wanted to scream, but your body was frozen. "Aww, bunny..." Evan's voice was replaced by HABIT's in an instant and your lungs finally found the air to scream, only for HABIT's rough, calloused hand covered your mouth, muffling the sound. "You're just too easy, huh?"

One of the most powerful and emotional scenes occurs during the song "You Will Be Found"- "Te encontrarán" which combines the use of different screens and social media messages from famous argentinian performers,  popping up on them while the actors interact with the screens, singing the powerful lyrics.

The cast delivers remarkable performances, bringing their own unique interpretations to the characters. Julia Zenko's portrayal of Evan's mother showcases both vulnerability and strength, capturing the essence of a mother navigating the challenges of parenthood. Her breathtaking solo song captivates the entire audience who can't resist shedding a few tears.  Rochi Hernandez portrayal of the conflicted and sympathetic Zoe Murphy, Evan's love interest, is filled with fresh and genuine emotion. Guido Balzaretti excels in the role of Connor Murphy, Zoe's troubled brother, bringing depth and complexity to a character fighting with his own inner demons. Mariano Condoluci and Mariel Percossi, with their undisputed talent ,  add all the fun the story needs to loosen up the dramatic scenes. Máximo Meyer as Evan, dazzles the audience not only with his acting  skills but also with his gifted amazing voice. He manages to convey the anxiety and inner angst of the character in an authentic and moving way. Hi! I’ve been looking for a YA fantasy book that isn’t too dark and sad. Does that make sense? I don’t mind if it has angst and pathos but I sort of wanted it to have some lighthearted scenes too?

I’m totally with you on needing YA fantasy with a bit of cheer run through it :) I find standalone fantasy novels are often good for that.

Euphoria Kids by Alison Evans is a good one with fae and witches and stuff.

Echo North by Joanna Ruth Meyer and Sun and Moon, Ice and Snow by Jessica Day George are both fairy tale retellings with softer vibes.

In Other Lands by Sarah Rees Brennan is a very fun fantasy standalone - it’s a parody though so it deconstructs a lot of fantasy tropes.

oh, and Margaret Rogerson’s two novels are excellent examples of fantasy with a sense of humour - highly recommend those two :) I hope those help!

⊹ฺ Tim is the best person to nap/cuddle with. He is so warm and holds you so closely, it's impossible not to feel loved.

⊹ฺ He has sleepy parent friend energy - like, he will gladly smile and nod at what you do, but will also get so nervous depending on what it is. As ready to smile and nod as he is, he is also fully prepared to sigh at you and your plan.

⊹ฺ Periodically disappears (as Tim does) and no matter how long he's gone, he always feels so bad and you are the first person he reaches out to.

⊹ฺ In that same vein, Time goes back and forth between seeking you out and isolating himself when he's low; he wants to be around you (his safe space), but he also doesn't want to put you in harm's way.

⊹ฺ He makes sure that you know where all of his knives are and how to use them. He wants you to be able to have a fighting chance if he's not around, whether that's physically, or because his body's being used against his will.

⊹ฺ Would love to one day have a family with you (if you also want one), but also knows how slim the chances of that happening are. He doesn't trust himself enough, either.

Handlung

Eine ausländische Macht (womit natürlich die Sowjetunion gemeint ist) läßt in Berlin, London und New York Menschen entführen. FBI-Agent Steve Rossi (George Raft) wird als Flugzeugkonstrukteur getarnt nach London geschickt, um mit der Gegenseite Kontakt aufzunehmen. Er hofft, einen der Entführten zu retten, bevor er hinter dem „Eisernen Vorhang“ verschwindet. Mithilfe der MI5-Agentin Joan Miller (Sally Gray), die in der deutschen Synchronfassung zu „Ruth“ Miller mutiert, gelingt es ihm, Michael Grand (Clifford Evans) auf die Spur zu kommen, der der Kopf der Organisation zu sein scheint. Zunächst kann Grand immer wieder entkommen. Nach einer Verfolgungsjagd gelingt es Rossi jedoch, ihn dann im Hafen stellen.

Ort der Handlung und Drehort: London. Zu Beginn werden kurz Archivaufnahmen aus Berlin, London und New York gezeigt, die mit nachgestellten Entführungsszenen verknüpft werden (welche vermutlich in London gedreht wurden). Studio-Aufnahmen in den Nettlefold Studios, Walton-on-Thames.

Fazit

Wir schreiben das Jahr 1952. Es ist „Kalter“ Krieg und die bösen Sowjets entführen Menschen in ihren Machtbereich. In dieser britischen „Red Scare“-Variante wird George Raft reaktiviert, der einer der meistbeschäftigten Schauspieler in den amerikanischen Gangster-Filmen der 1930er Jahre war. Gegen Ende der vierziger Jahre jedoch schwand sein Ruhm und ihm blieben meist Nebenrollen oder Hauptfiguren in billigeren B-Filmen oder im aufkeimenden Fernsehen. Im Vereinigten Königreich konnte man ihn natürlich gut als Star aus Übersee vermarkten. Ich würde nicht so weit gehen, Raft als Fehlbesetzung zu bezeichnen, aber es gelingt ihm und der Regie nicht, dem Film Spannung und Leben einzuhauchen. Die Darsteller agieren routiniert, aber nicht mehr und bleiben so im Mittelmaß hängen. Die Liebesgeschichte zwischen der britischen Agentin (Sally Gray) und dem FBI-Mann Rossi wirkt aufgesetzt und nicht wirklich überzeugend.

In einer Besprechung, die ich gelesen habe, meinte der Verfasser, Raft würde hier ein besonders „gelangweiltes“ Gesicht zur Schau tragen. Das glaube ich nicht. Raft macht das gleiche Pokergesicht wie immer. Es entbehrt zudem nicht einer gewissen Pikanterie, daß man gerade Raft hier als FBI-Agenten einsetzt. Denn er unterhielt seit seiner Jugend im New Yorker Problemviertel „Hell's Kitchen“ enge Kontakte zu Kriminellen wie Bugsy Siegel oder in den fünfziger Jahren noch zu Meyer Lansky, der ein Kasino in Havanna betrieb, dessen Miteigentümer George Raft war. In Gangster-Rollen wirkte er immer am überzeugendsten.

Auf der positiven Seite möchte ich aber vermerken, daß es in der Produktion keinen Leerlauf gibt; die Handlung geht zügig voran. Auch die Kamera-Arbeit ist erfreulich gut gemacht. Man merkt dem Bild an, daß hier Leute am Werk waren, die wußten, wie man die Hell/Dunkel-Kontraste im Schwarzweißfilm herüberbringt. Am interessantesten vielleicht ist Gefährlicher Auftrag als Zeitdokument: als Subtext finden wir die Angst vor sowjetischer Spionage; wir sehen Originalaufnahmen aus dem Nachkriegs-London, in dem die Spuren aus dem Zweiten Weltkrieg noch sichtbar sind; am Schluß sagt Joan Miller zu Rossi, künftig werde sie für ihn kochen. Eine berufstätige, selbstwußte und verheiratete Frau paßte wohl nicht in das Frauenbild von 1952: nach der Eheschließung hat sie sich in das Heimchen am Herd zu verwandeln.

Heimkino-Veröffentlichungen

Mir lag eine DVD-Veröffentlichung aus der Reihe Filmclub Edition vor, die 2015 bei Big Ben Movies herauskam (Vertrieb über Mediatarget). Sie enthält die britische Verleihversion mit dem Originalton und der alten deutschen Kinosynchronisation von 1954. Die Negative der letzteren sind durch einen Wasserschaden unwiderbringlich vernichtet, Big Ben Movies konnte allein die Tonspur des Filmmaterials retten und mit einem britischen Negativ synchronisieren. An einigen Stellen ist es auch hörbar, daß der Ton gelitten hat (EAN/UPC: 4260147225421).

In Großbritannien ist eine Veröffentlichung von Simply Media verfügbar, die freilich nur die englische Sprachfassung enthält (erschienen 2014, EAN/UPC: 5019322350118).
