I think the reason why Eugene Roe is my favorite character is because I relate to his faith in God, to his prayers that go unanswered. That he has a particular saint he recites things from (Francis, like I personally have with Matthew), and he holds onto it. That his faith is shaking as bad things continue to happen but he clings to it with his fingers because it’s what his family has taught him. That eventually when everything has fallen around him, when Bastogne gets blown up, Renee dies, and he realizes he cannot save everyone, he makes his own faith. He sits next to Babe and fixes his hand and looks out onto the line where the Germans are waiting to kill them, and he decides to laugh. To smile. Because one day God will answer and show him His plan, but right now he needs to survive. And then in Austria, in Zell am See, and bad things still happen but Eugene saves Chuck. Or he sees someone else save him. The mountains are beautiful, he’s playing baseball, and the war is over. I like to think that at the end of it all, Eugene saw His plan, and he found peace in that.

In her discussion of how feminist analyses of oppression would be enhanced by consideration of the lives of intellectually disabled people (particularly intellectually disabled women), Licia Carlson writes, rephrasing Elizabeth Spelman, “Does the existence of those who can be defined as complete women and mothers demand the existence of others who cannot be granted womanhood and motherhood?” (2010, 83). The Ashley Treatment provides an affirmative answer to that question. In response to the outrage many people expressed on Ashley’s behalf, Ashley’s parents set up a website to explain their decision and assure all concerned that they are good parents who simply want what’s best for their child. Their post includes an explanation for why they at think of Ashley as their “Pillow Angel”: “We call her our Pillow Angel since she’s so sweet and stays right where we place her, usually on a pillow” (“Ashley Treatment” 2007). Ashley’s “sweetness” and staying in her place reflect cultural gendered expectations of good little girls, a point reinforced by the fact that photos accompanying media coverage have tended to feature Ashley dressed in pink. Dressed in pink and perpetually small, Ashley is presented as someone who will always be a sweet, easy-to-manage little girl. The assumption that disabled people cannot be sexual beings is a feature of disability oppression. At the same time, cognitively disabled people are often stereotyped as hypersexual. Both assumptions inform attempts to justify the Ashley Treatment.

3. Which one outlives the other, and how do they cope?

Vannoe: I mean given the manga literally starts with the words "This is the story of how I killed Vanitas” narrated by Noe i think the answer is obvious 🥲😭

Sulemio: I do believe Miorine outlives Suletta and basically becomes the kind of old widdow that will sit on a parc bench and start telling her and Suletta’s life-stories to whatever poor sap decided to sit next to her

Eugenezul: I believe Rapunzel outlives Eugene but only by a few months before she too passes of old age.

4. What do they do on date night?

Vannoe: knowing these two Noe probably has an entire romantic date night planned out with candle light dinner, a walk in the parc etc. but because the fates hate these two homosexuals everything that can go wrong WILL go wrong.

Sulemio: either they go star-gazing or visit the botanical gardens

Eugenezul: Given Rapunzel spent 18 years locked up in a tower i imagine their date nights include just being outside. Does not matter if it’s in the City or in the forest. As long as they aren’t surrounded by walls.

Sulemio: i think they’d stay at home and enjoy eavhother’s company by cuddling on the couch etc.

Vannoe: Noe🥳 Vanitas hates himself too much to see what’s so amazing about birthdays

Sulemio: Suletta🥳 She’d go all out for her wife.

Eugenezul: Probably Rapunzel but i think they both try their best to make one another’s birthday special.
