Random Kaplan family headcanons (P1 of ?)
~~~~
Jeff and Rebecca met at the age of twenty-five. Rebecca's brother and Jeff's sister were put together by a matchmaker and decided to try and introduce the two families.
All of their sons are named after playwrights (William Shakespeare=William (Billy) Kaplan, Eugene O'Neill=Eugene (Gene) Kaplan, Samuel Beckett=Beckett Kaplan)
Billy is the oldest (nineteen), Gene is the middle child (seventeen), and Beckett is the youngest (fourteen).
Gene and Beckett are also mutants, but Eugene doesn't use his powers, and Beckett's haven't activated yet.
Jeff and Rebecca legally adopted Tommy when he was seventeen
Jeff has undiagnosed Autism. He and Rebecca agreed not to get a professional diagnosis.
Beckett is Autistic and has ADHD, Gene has dyslexia and Billy has dyspraxia and have all been diagnosed.
Gene is obsessed with dreams and sleep (like, he wants to study it at university and stuff)
Tommy likes arts and crafts and often makes bookmarks and gives them to friends as gifts. He doesn't like using hot glue guns, though.
Jeff knits to relieve stress and to keep his hands steady.
Gene does knitting and crochet, and Beckett does embroidery.
Rebecca calls herself Dr. Rebecca Oure-Klum (her maiden name) to her patients. And Jeff just tells them to call him Jeff.
Billy, Beckett, and Gene used to have a massive Minecraft world that they played on together, but now only Beckett plays on it.
Gene goes to a private boarding school for high achieving students.
Everyone at Beckett's school avoids him because of Billy and the John Kessler thing.
Beckett posts superhero fanfiction online (but never includes The Young Avengers because to him, that's weird). Jeff and Rebecca support it because they think fanfiction and fanart are healthy ways for teenagers to explore gender, sexuality and creativity; they do not read them, though, Gene does and occasionally does fanart for Beckett's fics, but keep them on the down low.
Gene has a crush on Marvel Girl (Jean Grey, not Rachel). Beckett has a crush on Iceman, Spider-Man, and Human Torch.
Jeff and Rebecca made a swear jar for English swears, a swear jar for Yiddish swears, a swear jar for Hebrew swears, and a swear jar for made up language swears. They have over 5,000 dollars in them.
Gene once got Northstars autograph. He also once got Jean-Paul Beaubier's autograph. So far, he's the only person to have figured out his identity by himself.
They live next door to William and Madeline Drake.
The reason Gene and Becket weren’t home when Mother took over is because they were both on multiday field trips to Xaviers School for Gifted Youngsters.
Gene cries when dogs die in movies. A Dogs Journey broke him.
Like Billy, Jeff sleep talks. A lot. Mainly about the structure of a heart and different heart conditions. Often about Rebecca.
Alex Kaplan at MMFA:
During July and August media appearances, the leadership of the election denier organization True the Vote revealed that it is trying to partner with local sheriffs to monitor ballot drop boxes for supposed voter fraud during the 2024 election, particularly in swing states like Wisconsin, where the organization’s founder claimed to “have three very influential sheriffs.” True the Vote was founded in 2009 — following the election of former President Barack Obama — by then-tea party activist Catherine Engelbrecht with the goal of pushing for voter ID laws and purging voter rolls. Engelbrecht, whom “Stop the Steal” organizer Ali Alexander has called “the godmother of the election integrity movement,” and her business partner, Gregg Phillips, a Republican operative and former Mississippi official, have repeatedly pushed false election-related claims since at least 2016. Phillips claimed without evidence that millions of illegal votes had been cast in the 2016 presidential election, and both Engelbrecht and Phillips were listed as executive producers for and starred in 2000 Mules, a widely debunked 2022 film that claims to show evidence of widespread voter fraud in the 2020 presidential election. (Salem Media, which distributed the film, has since retracted it and removed it from its platforms.) Engelbrecht has admitted that former President Donald Trump is a “natural beneficiary of the majority of what we [True the Vote] do.”
Engelbrecht and Phillips also cultivated a close relationship with influencers in the QAnon community, turning over supposedly “devastating” evidence of 2020 election fraud and asking the QAnon community to “start connecting dots” and look further into election software company Konnech. As a result, those figures targeted the company, and the Los Angeles County, California, district attorney later indicted Konnech CEO Eugene Yu, apparently spurred at least in part by True the Vote’s and QAnon figures’ efforts. The charges were ultimately dropped, with the county and Yu later reaching a $5 million settlement. True the Vote also collaborated with a then-QAnon supporter whose group monitored drop boxes during the 2022 elections.
Ahead of the 2024 elections, the organization has launched an app based on flawed data that “enables users to research voter data and submit voter-eligibility challenges to local election offices.” In multiple media appearances in late July and early August, Engelbrecht appeared to reveal an additional 2024 effort to partner with local sheriffs and target ballot drop boxes, particularly in swing states like Wisconsin. During a July 30 interview with self-described Christian nationalist “prophet” Lance Wallnau — in which Wallnau predicted that “there will be cheating” using drop boxes in swing states like Wisconsin and Michigan — Engelbrecht said that True the Vote would be “working with sheriffs to identify areas that sheriffs would be willing to allow us to grant them camera equipment that they can monitor and we can livestream.” When Wallnau asked specifically about Wisconsin, Engelbrecht said, “We have three very influential sheriffs, and we look forward to more. We’re getting there next week to do a site assessment.”
Election Denial organization True The Vote is trying to partner with local sheriffs to monitor ballot drop boxes for supposed “voter fraud”.
Tara Reid, Rachael Leigh Cook, and Rosario Dawson in Josie and the Pussycats (Harry Elfont, Deborah Kaplan, 2001)
Cast: Rachael Leigh Cook, Tara Reid, Rosario Dawson, Gabriel Mann, Paulo Costanzo, Missi Pyle, Alan Cumming, Parker Posey, Tom Butler, Donald Faison, Seth Green, Breckin Meyer, Alexander Martin, Serena Altschul, Carson Daly, Aries Spears, Eugene Levy. Screenplay: Deborah Kaplan, Harry Elfont. Cinematography: Matthew Libatique. Production design: Jasna Stefanovic. Film editing: Peter Teschner. Music: John Frizzell.
A "cult film" is any movie that didn't make it on the first theatrical release but later gained a huge following, either in theatrical re-release or TV and video. The reason usually given for the initial failure is often the mass incomprehension of film critics, but also the failure of marketing to target the right audience. In the case of Josie and the Pussycats it's a bit of both. In the case of the critics, a typical reaction might be Roger Ebert's decidedly thumbs-down comment, "The movie is a would-be comedy about prefab bands and commercial sponsorship, which may mean that the movie's own plugs for Coke, Target, Starbucks, Motorola and Evian are part of the joke." Is there a better example of seeing the point but not getting it? The central irony in the theatrical failure of Josie and the Pussycats is that it was a blatant satire of marketing that failed because of poor marketing: It was targeted to the wrong audiences. Instead of hip audiences like, say, viewers of Saturday Night Live, it was marketed to the teens and pre-teens who are the vehicle for its satire. Now, granted, I don't think it's a particularly good satire. It's silly where it should be edgy and a bit too loud and obvious. The comparatively novice writer-directors, Harry Elfont and Deborah Kaplan, have allowed skilled comic actors like Alan Cumming and Parker Posey to play too far over the top. But I do endorse what it's doing with its product-placement overkill, and maybe it made a few in its audience aware of how they're being manipulated. Or as Josie (the very good Rachael Leigh Cook) puts it, "Oh my god, I'm a trend pimp!"
Hey, so for once I'm not posting about DADramaNow, bc I feel this is a VERY important topic to post here.
So in the HTF fandom, there's this guy called "Nemao". He's this really gross guy who ended up being a grooming pedophile. Here's some proof on him: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EdZ5sDybGRQ https://www.reddit.com/r/happytreefriends/comments/1104q1y/nemaos_grooming/ https://www.reddit.com/r/happytreefriends/comments/1115llv/yikes/ https://www.reddit.com/r/happytreefriends/comments/110ydgu/final_post_regarding_nemao/ https://www.reddit.com/r/happytreefriends/comments/110ooll/more_on_nemao/
So yeah, a very idiotic and gross person. Yet of course, there are still people supporting him. And I'll show you one of the WORST cases: https://www.deviantart.com/gellygirl/status-update/Hey-idk-if-anyone-will-980654919
So yeah, there's someone called the Kaplan boys. Long after Nemao's been exposed as a sicko, he continues to blindly follow him. Doesn't even acknowledge when people point it out. Like, if you're going to support a pedophile, at least try to justify your actions or shit?? He's an absolute moron. And also for a side note, he supports Autism Speaks, which is a corrupt company who pretends to care for and support autistic children, but in reality they treat them horribly and view them as incapable burdens.
So yes, to anyone seeing this, PLEASE look through all of this, and maybe even share it around. Thank you. I want this to be brought to light, even outside the HTF community. Both Nemao and Kaplan deserve to be in jail.
He may technically come here to voice himself, but based on the fact he supports Autism Speaks, my hopes are not high.
Note to readers, despite its name and popularity, Autism Speaks is in part a negative eugenics organization, influenced by New York City’s disability-unfriendly culture. Here is a good gist on that. I live for charity work. Beware false charities like them.
[...] Hitler advocated eugenics or Social Darwinism. Focused on anthropometry and IQ testing, eugenics was also the basis of the American immigration law of 1924 that aimed to preserve the “pure Nordic stock” of the United States, where 30 states had laws against “miscegenation” (interracial marriage). Between 1909 and 1979, California would sterilize 20,000 immigrant women for being “feeble-minded”; Hitler would murder some 25,000 “defective” “Aryan” children and 300,000 mental patients as “wertlos” (devoid of value). There is considerable interplay and overlap in American and German academic life, politics and law between racist ideas and practices—parallels that exist to this day. In Imperial Grunts: on the Ground with the American Military (2006), Robert Kaplan eerily traces a 1931 map of the German Ost by Karl Haushofer as parallel to the vast American empire of bases today in what soldiers often name “Indian country.” Donald Trump’s repeated refrains from the Right are drawn from the Klan, Britain First, and the American National Alliance, whose president, William Pierce, author of the Turner Diaries, considered Hitler the greatest leader of the 20th century. But the driving idea behind Hitler’s conception of Social Darwinism was the extermination of American Indians in the “Wild West.” And the vehicle for this was Karl May’s fantasy novels. When Hitler went to celebrate at May’s gravesite in Radebeul, he discovered that May’s best friend, buried next to him, was Jewish. The Nazis dug up that corpse. During the Cold War, American students, myself included, were taught the silly idea that the Soviet Union and Germany were the same, as opposed to the American “open society.” Eugenics and the similarity of American and Nazi laws were whited out. Yet students and some faculty have long fought American eugenics. Only recently has there been scholarly recognition of colonial genocide, brought home to Europe in the “Wild East.” American scholars, diplomats, and politicians did not read Hitler or put out of their minds any mention of Indians. They did not notice the Karl May craze in Germany, much less connect it, as Europeans do, to Hitler: there was, despite Indians dancing on the German screen, no “Wild East.” They “forgot” all this because settler-genocide was too close to home. And in Israel, the idea of settler-colonialism, including comparison of Palestinians to American Indians, also seized the imagination of leaders. They do not know—I speak here as a Jew—the close connection to this central Nazi idea and World War II.
Non-paywalled link
In 1893, at the World Columbian Exposition in Chicago, historian Frederick Jackson Turner of the University of Wisconsin famously lectured on settlers killing Indians across the United States as they extended an ever-westward American frontier and how that frontier was coming to an end. He was in touch with Friedrich Ratzel, the German historian who coined the terms Biogeographie (biological geography) and Lebensraum (a large, conquered space for an otherwise constricted German life). This was to be continental expansion and ethnic cleansing of “lesser” peoples.
Lebensraum was explicitly Turner’s idea of an American-defining Western frontier transposed to a German-defining East in Poland and Russia. For both Turner and Ratzel, this was transcontinental, settler colonialism, not some distant empire across the seas. Ratzel was a founder of the Pan-German League, which had unhappily seen German immigrants settle in the Wild West, and imagined Germans surging eastward in conquest during World War I like 13th century Teutonic knights invading Poland. As Turner reciprocally put it, “American colonization [of the West] has become the mother of German colonial policy.”
…
As Fuehrer, Hitler kept the whole collection of May’s works in his bedroom, and they inspired his ideas about the frontier. To Hitler, Lebensraum meant settlement and bread: “For a man of the soil, the finest country is the one that yields the finest crops. In twenty years’ time, European emigration will no longer be directed towards America, but eastwards.”
Of Ukrainians, Hitler insisted, “There’s only one duty: to Germanize this country by the immigration of Germans, and to look upon the natives as Redskins.”
Astonishingly, Hitler’s idea of settling the eastern European frontier even came decked out in the clichés of Western conquest: “We’ll supply the Ukranians with scarves, glass beads, and everything that colonial peoples like.”
In Ukraine, Nazi allies led by Stefan Bandera (whose statue still looms in Kiev) murdered some 184,000 out of 187,000 Jews. The Nazis exported the killing of Jews to the “Wild East.”
To justify the slaughter of Poles, Hitler conjured North America: “I don’t see why a German who eats a piece of bread should torment himself with the idea that the soil that produces this bread has been won by the sword. When we eat wheat from Canada, we don’t think about the despoiled Indians.”
German novels by Clara Viebig in the early 20th century made Poles “blacks” because of their dark hair, Polish women “seductresses.”As opposed to “blond” Aryans, the latter were even imagined as “vampires.” Two leading genocidal impulses in America, toward Indians and blacks, became one in German racism.
When Nazi troops were losing to the Soviet resistance, Hitler sent 300,000 copies of Karl May novels to the officers, who may have shaken their heads in disbelief. That was Hitler’s leading strategic thought: “The struggle we are waging there against the [Soviet] Partisans resembles very much the struggle in North America against the Red Indians. Victory will go to the strong, and strength is on our side.”
Heinrich Himmler, head of the SS, proclaimed, “The East is a plantation of pure Germanic blood, the melting pot of all German and Germanic tribes.” Hitler’s idea was to kill 30 or 40 million Russians, confine the rest on reservations, and settle Aryan farmers on the soil. Some 20 million Russians died in the Nazi onslaught. Heinrich Boll, a wounded soldier and later Nobel Prize-winning novelist, dreamed of “a colonial existence here in the East after a victorious war.” Nazis commissioned books to “acquaint small children with the ideas behind the settlement plan and transfer the cowboys-and-Indians romanticism of the ‘American West’ to eastern Europe.”
Jews, said Hitler’s Governor General for Poland, Hans Frank, were “flatfooted Indians,” and in 1939, Hitler forced 90,000 Jews into the Lublin-Reservat[reservation/camp] in Poland—a maneuver modeled on Kit Carson’s 1863 driving of the Navajos to the inarable Bosque Redondo.
Tagged by @lordkingsmith. Thank you kindly! This is a bit longer but it's a piece from the tale I'm working on alongside many others.
Set in the Coinless universe before everything goes to shit.
“He tried to kick me in the fucking nuts!” Tommy’s snarl cut through the hushed front office, the closed door to Mr. Kaplan’s office doing little to muffle the confrontation.
“Mr. Oliver! Sit down!” the principal yelled, the forceful rap of the older man’s hands upon his desktop making the secretary jump from where she sat out in the front office. “Considering the chaos you’ve unleashed since August, I’m sure Mr. Skullovitch was somehow provoked by your actions!”
Mr. Kaplan looked to where Eugene huddled in the dated plastic chair, scrawny legs drawn up to his boney chest. It was clear the punk was still seething, shoulders rapidly rising and falling as he panted while he cut his eyes at Tommy. His shaky upper lip was lifted over his teeth in a very uncharacteristic aggressive manner.
Skull’s orange shirt boasted a blossom of vivid red that dripped down the front, his nostrils packed with rolled white gauze from the nurse’s office. Dried, crusted flakes of blood feathered around the dressing and dusted the flesh above his mouth. An ice pack dripping with condensation hung limply from one hand.
“He was acting like a dick! Like he always does, Mr. Kaplan!” Eugene managed to choke out, his voice nasally, and he coughed a few times when the blood slicking the back of his throat went down the wrong pipe. “He should be locked up in the loony bin!”
Tommy’s hazel eyes widened, and he almost looked as if he were about to launch himself again at the smaller teen.
“You’re not going to do anything to him, Mr. Oliver, so I don’t want to see one cheek lifted off that chair! I’m not kidding, young man! We discussed your colorful history prior to you starting here and I know I warned you that your past behavior wasn’t going to fly in this institution.”
The principal’s eyes went back to Eugene, his expression exasperated, yet also concerned.
“And Mr. Skullovitch…there’s no need for that kind of language. I have no doubt he did something that riled you into attacking him. You’ve been in my office for a lot of different reasons, but not for something like this. Farkas has been into see me quite often… Fighting is more his style, not yours, Eugene.”
He sighed, rubbing a hand over his wrinkled forehead.
“I won’t be surprised if I see him later today once he wakes up and decides to grace us with his presence. Your friends will trip over each other to tell him what happened this morning.”
Tommy rolled his eyes.
“I’m not afraid of that fat fuck…”
Mr. Kaplan shoved his chair away from his desk, his patience reaching its limit.
“Alright, Mr. Oliver, I’ve heard enough from you to last me the rest of the school year. Rather than reward your unruly behavior by sending you home, you can spend the rest of the day in the front office, doing your schoolwork and being silent. I don’t want to have to call the police as your parents never seem to pick up the phone…”
“Don’t threaten me with a good time, Mr. Kaplan…” the sullen teen hissed after his lips had briefly twitched in a vile smirk. “Besides my so-called parents probably won’t care.”
Skull caught the unconscious reaction, his stomach feeling like it had just knotted up in several greasy links. The Oliver house had been rather…quiet. No drunken ranting or yelling or swearing. No screeching… No cop cars in the driveway anymore.
“How the hell does no one else see what you are?” he yelled, chucking the ice pack in the asshole’s direction. “He’s evil….”
“Mr. Skullovitch!” the principal interrupted sternly.
“NO! You need to listen to us! He’s going to…” Eugene stubbornly barreled on, before another fit of blood-choked coughing stopped him.
Tommy smiled sweetly, yet his eyes had pooled that spooky black they always did when he was about to do something heinous.
“So dramatic, Eugene…” he cooed. “That hurts my feelings!”
Skull growled, swallowing the mouthful of coppery liquid.
“You don’t have feelings, prick! Except anger! You get your rocks off on hurting people! You’re a psychopath!”
Mr. Kaplan rounded his desk, trying to block the barbed banter.
“Stop this at once…”
But Tommy was obviously rankled by the mention of his questionable mental health.
“Hey! They never officially decided if its psychopathy or sociopathy, Eugene, swirling around in there. So, if you’re looking to weaponize my list of diagnoses, I’m going to insist on accuracy!”
Heads Up Seven Up
I got tagged by @sliceoflifeshepard :) thank you!
Everyone he loved tended to die, get hurt, or grow to hate him. Sometimes all three. The last thing he wanted was to be…well. Himself. With Zack. Because if he was himself, with Zack, surely that would drive him away. It’d driven everyone else away.
He remembered when they were teenagers. Billy opened his mouth, and Zack asked Trini for translation. Zack made a pop culture reference or dance reference and Billy smiled and asked someone else privately. When they were finally starting to understand each other again Zack was chosen for that convention. By the time he got back, Billy was no longer on planet.
It’d been too long, and Billy wasn’t sure if they could make an excuse for a relationship now.
And I tag;
