posting here because this just doesn’t feel right to talk about in the horseimagebarn voice but this is extremely important to talk about.

my partner and i have returned to our hometown to stay with her family and my own has gotten a hotel here too (they moved to the town we currently live in after we did) so we are all safe and out of the thick of it

however there are tens of thousands of people who are not both in my own town and in the many surrounding it. appalachia will take an extremely long time to recover from this and there are more storms on the way. all i see on social media right now is people asking for shelter because their homes have been destroyed, or people asking for help searching for family members who are missing. hundreds of trees have fallen. hundreds of homes have flooded. roads are literally falling apart. preexisting sinkholes due to shitty pipes are opening up and consuming land. dams are on the verge of bursting and the only way to stop it is to release water so quickly it floods whole towns. all but one of our cell towers are down, so only people with at&t have service and the rest can’t contact anyone. over half the town still doesn’t have power. a major water supply issue occurred and the entire town is on a water boil order with no electricity to boil with. people are trapped in their homes and workplaces or out on the street because they have nowhere to go. law enforcement is blocking off roads but trapping people in the process. people have to be rescued by helicopter. our animal shelter has no water or power and boarding facilities have been flooded. entire villages like chimney rock nc are gone, and entire cities like asheville are cut off from the rest of the state and are completely inaccessible. ALL OF THE ROADS IN WESTERN NORTH CAROLINA ARE CLOSED. 400+ roads are closed because they are unsafe . that is INSANE!!!

when people say that climate change isn’t real, they don’t know what they’re talking about. climate change and its father capitalism are only going to continue to worsen lives in every way possible. i live in the mountains and our infrastructure is completely unprepared to handle hurricanes and it’s only going to get worse. it’s such a strange and eye-opening experience to live something like this when you think that it could never happen to you because that type of weather shouldn’t reach you in your environment. climate change doesn’t care where you live. it’s real.

western north carolina and the rest of the southeast that has been hit by helene need help. more people need to be talking about this so that the government DOES SOMETHING because the government historically fucking hates appalachia and it still does!!! the major state institution near me took DAYS to respond despite being the only place in town with power and wifi connection because they had to wait for the state to approve their response—they could have allowed thousands of people to evacuate days prior to the hurricane hitting us but they didn’t do anything before or after until it was too late!!! it’s bullshit!!! PLEASE get talking about this because something has to be done. climate change is going to continue happening and our mountains and the people in them are going to suffer immensely. hundreds if not thousands are now homeless. please talk about this look at the footage online of the wreckage and look how quickly our infrastructure crumbled. we need better. the people of appalachia deserve better.

i’ll get back to posting horses soon. but for now this is a lot. my friends are homeless and my family had to get off the mountain or be trapped there without power and water for days. we’re all safe but exhausted. i hope everyone who has been affected by this is staying safe. if you are in western nc, dm me. when i come back, if you’re in my area, im happy to bring supplies. stay safe everyone

I dont think i ever showed this jacket off??? its a lil bare rn, but i have an unlimited amount of punk projects to do rn 😩

it was my first jean jacket, and the first thing i ever wanted to punk so its rlly close to my heart! i beaded the rainbow by hand (it took like 5 hours 😭), and the patch towards the bottom says "esse quam videri" which is latin for "to be rather than to seem"! That patch was a gift from my cousin's gf and she embroidered it!!!! Theres also a little embroidery on the collar. While i was closeted i embroidered they and them into the insides of the top pockets and the omni flag into the cuff. They were both completely hidden, but brought me so much joy and pride in middle school <3

Such a good fic. I love the characters and how they come together. The smut is hot. It's sweet how Harry's called "Harry James" by people rather than just Harry. I'm also a sucker for the time period and the vibe. I can't tell you how many times I've revisited this fic. Also the related vignettes, which are also super enjoyable.

Still waffling on whether the exposure to different groups and thus different ideas and beliefs on other social media is worth the stress and distraction. One thing I am learning though is something about group identity and land.

Obviously I love North Carolina very much. Sure I was just randomly born here, but still it means a lot to me and it is a part of my identity. Esse quam videri forever. But also I've never imagined that the people randomly born on this bit of land inside borders carved out by some people in the 1700s were somehow better than other people randomly born on other bits of land.

Nothing other people do could ever surprise me and make me say "I thought we were better than/immune to this!" Humans are gonna human wherever those humans happened to be born, and nothing about the ecosystem inside a particular human-created border line frees the humans inside that ecosystem from being human and thus susceptible to the things that lead humans to hurt other living beings.

What I mean is that I am not at all surprised that "it" could happen here, because "it" can happen anywhere that humans gather together. You can absolutely love a bit of land and be proud of it and of the culture that the other humans on the bit of land have developed without thinking the group of humans on the bit of land are somehow different at a base biological level from other humans.

‘Avatar AITA’ and ‘Esse Quam Videri’ perhaps?

“Avatar AITA”—short for “Avatar Am I The Asshole”—is exactly what it sounds like: a version of r/AmITheAsshole for avatars. For anyone unfamiliar, r/AmITheAsshole is a Reddit community where people can post summaries of socially and ethically complex situations and ask for opinions on their own and others’ behavior. The goal, in theory, is to hear opinions on whether the poster was in the wrong in a particular situation. The format allows for degrees of nuance such as “actually, everyone involved was being an asshole,” “nobody was an asshole here, it was just a hard situation,” “yes, that was asshole behavior, but in this instance it was probably justified,” and “the way you’ve described this situation is ambiguous, I would need more information to decide.” Also just straight up “yes, you’re the asshole” and “no, you are not the asshole, someone else in this situation is.” This fic is the same, but for avatars—specifically, I started working on it for Podcast Girls Week in July (I know), so it’s fourteen fictional AITA posts, each from a female avatar of a different Entity from TMA (all canon characters, although I still have to make up a name for one of Peter Lukas’s sisters), describing a situation from canon in the terms of an AITA post. Of course, my thoughts on avatar morality and the individual ethical beliefs and personality of each character heavily affect how the posts are written—there are posts from people sure they’re in the right and just looking for validation, of course (as there are on the real-life version), but there are also posts from people genuinely uncertain if they’ve done something wrong, but their ideas of what that might have been and/or why it would have been wrong are completely different from how most humans might interpret the situation. I’ve written three of the posts so far and have solid ideas for most of the others, and I think it’s a hilarious concept (especially if I can get a few of my readers to leave in-universe replies in the comments), so I’m hoping to get back to it eventually!

“Esse Quam Videri”—Latin for “to be, rather than to seem”—is a fic I told @hauntedsuns I would write them while they were recovering from a dental procedure (I did not do this. Sorry). Basically, it involves Jailbreak Mike getting hit with a Spiral curse that more or less affects you like laughing gas, and the rest of the Squad trying to deal with the situation—i.e. figure out what happened, get Mike uncursed, and head off the potential catastrophe that is someone with both large chunks of several Leitners memorized and a tendency towards echolalia, especially when under stress, under serious stress and in the total absence of anything resembling a brain-to-mouth filter. Yeah. Good luck with that, y’all.

rambling observations of Orthodoxy from a Cradle Catholic's perspective (specifically new, western, online Orthodoxy)

To start, I of course love and pray for my Orthodox brothers and sisters. They are fellow soldiers in the Army of Christ and have legitimate sacraments, liturgy, and apostolic succession. It is a beautiful faith.

What I have noticed, however, is that they seem to act as if they are the only ones to have these. I grew up in a traditional Catholic family, so none of these things are "new" to me. As a child, my parents would read us stories of saints, my uncle is a priest, we often prayed the rosary and simply lived Catholic lives. The thing is, though, we never saw ourselves as "traditional." We just lived our lives without contrast to anything else. It wasn't until I was a teenager and went to a public school for the first time that I really noticed how unlike the rest of my peers this was. So when I, a Catholic, see Orthodoxy, I don't see anything "special," so to say.

But what I often see (keep in mind this is all anecdotal so, yaknow, grain of salt etc) from online Orthodoxy is that they are completely enthralled in these traditions. Which is great! They are right to be so. But there is a certain, American exceptionalism to their approach. They speak of these things as if they are the only ones to have them, sadly not without a notable pride/arrogance. See the typical "orthobro." This type of individual may well be aware of the existence of this same depth of tradition in Catholicism, but they are wholly dismissive of it. They would still define themselves as separate/superior to Catholicism, ignoring the history of both churches.

My thoughts for the origin of this is Protestantism. In modern western Protestantism there is a true drought, disdain even, for tradition. And why would they have tradition? Those are man made, supposedly. When the young faithful discovers Apostolic Christianity the can finally see the beauty of the liturgy, but they still have a protestant outlook. They can't become Catholic, obviously, but they can't shake their yearn for tradition. Orthodoxy then becomes both rebellious and comfortable. They don't have to submit to Rome, but they gain a true liturgy and sacraments.

Ultimately, I think the issue boils down to people defining themselves only with contrast. An outlook which is inherently combative, which explains why orthobros are all jackasses(affectionate). And, of course, Catholicism is no better in these regards. We've all had the pleasure of interacting with the 90lbs wet tradcath. Kinda of loosing my train of thought now though so uhhhhhhhhhhhh

I've always loved our state motto. Esse Quam Videri. And yes I am such a North Carolina nerd that I didn't need to look up how to spell it. It became a part of my soul the first time I read it.

To be, rather than to seem.

I'm not sure how to talk to the spousal person about it. I know that if I could find the words he would listen and he would understand and he would be comforting. But I find myself just telling him that I like him and the kitties a lot over and over.

It's just....he grew up here in Charlotte. I don't think he'd been to the mountains much until he started coming up to see me during the long distance years and then now on trips to visit my family. I don't think they're a deep part of him the same way.

And anyway vocal speech has always been harder than writing or typing.
