I’ve got things to do and places to be but I heard this song and HAD to start making an edit I didn’t know how to do (it’s a wip rn and my tech has been bitchy running it so it’s very jagged in some places)

Hi Dr. Kristophine!
So I'm in nursing school and something one of my instructors said about obesity really bothered me and IK you're a doctor who Actually Knows about weight as it pertains to health so I wanted to see if you'd weigh in (pun not intended)
She said, in reference to cancer risk factors,
"poor nutrition, especially one that is high in saturated fats, increases your risk for obesity which increases your risk for cancer... Physical activity, again obesity is a risk factor for multiple disease processes, cancer being one of them... So being immobile increases your risk for obesity which increases your risk for certain cancers."
When I heard that in our lecture vids, to me it seemed like she was using the wrong variables to connect poor diet and lack of exercise to cancer
[disclaimer: this instructor is dangerously incompetent, often wrong in her lectures, no one ever does well on her exams because she doesn't teach properly, and my other instructors for that class are accumulating evidence to get her removed from that position] so I don't take much of what she says as legit, but I'd like to know WHY its illegitimate, if it is
If you don't feel like addressing this all yourself, I'd also appreciate you throwing some resources at me to read
What she’s doing is looking at a set of interconnected variables and assuming a causal relationship. This is dangerous—I would cover why, but I don’t teach psych stats labs anymore—and what she should probably be saying instead is that being sick tends to go with being fat, rather than that being fat causes being sick. To the best of my knowledge, no one has proposed a clear pathway by which being fat would lead to cancer. Now, fat tissue does make estrogen, which raises risk for some cancers—but lowers it for others, and protects bone density, so it’s always a personalized discussion in patients I’m looking at putting on estradiol.
Now, there are definitely dangerous things you can do with diet. Trans fatty acids are more likely to lead to vascular health problems than good old fashioned natural butter. But “diet—>fat—>cancer” is just bullshit, and if any of my beloved haters out there want to produce high-quality and compelling evidence to the contrary, go right ahead.

please try to sell me gw2. i really want to like it and ive tried a couple times over the years to get into it, but every time my experience is like: walk for 5 irl minutes -> talk to someone -> kill 20 things -> random world events -> kill 50 things -> go back and talk to the person. rinse and repeat
and then i uninstall the game
Hard to sell it to ya when it's free to play ;0
Tumblr media
As a new/returning player I honestly recommend going in with some friends. It's a game were you can absolutely solo PvE with the right build, but I always have more fun playing with my friends for the shenanigans. I also, 100%, recommend plopping an OC in the game. My first characters were both in-game and all their lore is based around GW2, but putting June in there has been hella fun to see how she would handle being in Tyria.
Your first 80 levels are basically to help get you accustom to the game mechanics and the story. Though the story is optional, I recommend playing it so you get more of a feel of Tyria and the history. The story also leads you through the game an the map rather than just taking random quests as you explore. It's really the only mode that gives you a bit of direction in the game.
If you happen to get stuck or have any questions about the game, it's pretty safe to ask the map chat and usually people will help you out, especially in early maps. GW2 is a game that doesn't really teach you how to play, you learn as you go. There's also plenty of YT vids on how to get started and tutorials if you get stuck or suggestions of things to try out as you level. They've also updated the game fairly recently where you now have access to the Raptor mount without needing to have Path of Fire or doing the expansion, which is a HUGE quality of life change while you explore the early maps.
Once your toon hits level 80, that's when you unlock your mastery tracks that will allow you to do more of the endgame content and continue through the living story. Fractals, Raids, Dungeons, Strikes, World Bosses, Meta Trains, Gold Farming, PvP, WvW, FASHION WARS!!, There's a ton to do once you're set up, and again, lots of resources available to help you out (TaCO, GW2 Efficiency, Crafting Guides).
The world is unique. It feels lived in and ever expanding. The lore for all the playable races in the game is really interesting and they do a lot to subvert expectations from typical fantasy stories. Some things are a hit or miss for a lot of folks but there's so much to love about the game even my least favorite parts are like just mid to me compared to the parts I genuinely enjoy. My favorite expansion is Path of Fire + Season 4. The desert maps are my favorites followed by Maguma (begrudgingly). Cantha had grown on me a lot after a million Leviathan Farms for gold lol. THE SEASONAL EVENTS AHHH like again there's just so much to touch on but yeah the long and short of it is it IS a time sink at minimum to get to the more favored content, but even as a old player I still love making new toons and taking them through the early game content again just for fun.
But yeah, free to play, no subscriptions, all expansions are a one time purchase. You've got 10 years worth of content to explore and try out. It's a relatively inexpensive MMO (the expacs can be up to 50% off during certain yearly sales). An overall very helpful community. Any paid content is mostly cosmetics and convenience items, but nothing that gives you an advantage over other players. Basically everyone is grinding towards a similar end-goal, so you can always get the same gear as people through grinding. Nothing is really out of reach and people are always willing to help others out with multiplayer content.
I've been consistently playing for 8-9 years now. It's one of those game where I'm IN it for like a few months then may take a few months off until a holiday event I love is coming up and then I play for a few months again. It's probably the only other game I've sunk as much time into as Pokemon or Skyrim over the years (I jokingly call it Skyrim Online since ya'll won't catch me playing ESO). But yeah just, it's a game I never expected to play for this long and this consistently and it always feels fun to pick back up. Genuinely I do hope you give it another try. I've honestly had the most fun I've had in years with the wave of new and returning players jumping back into the game c:

I really want to get into tales of symphonia because you have increased my background exposure to it enough but is the anime a decent place to start??? Or should I go find ye olde emulator?
I haven't actually checked the anime out myself, so somebody who's actually seen it should be better able to tell you but from what I gather it's better to give the game a play if you can.
The original game is available on GameCube, PS2 (Japanese-only), PS3, PS4/5, PC, Xbox One, and Switch--though from what I've heard and seen the Switch version is a mess of a port with genuine major performance issues. So you've got options for which version you're interested in (regardless of if you emulate or not). Just, like I said, maybe steer clear of the Switch version lol.
The sequel didn't ever get an anime adaptation as far as I'm aware, and the game is sadly only available via Wii and PS3 (and considering the quality of the TOS Switch port, I'm thinking it doged a bullet there lol). The PS3 version is good, no major technical issues in it or anything.
The sequel game did also get a manga that was part prequel, part interqeuel which ran in the Tales Of magazine (then got published in 2 volumes), of which there is a scanlation though I would suggest avoiding that unless you play the game first due to massive spoilers. But if you do check the sequel game out, it fleshes out a character significantly vs their in-game appearance (which makes sense for plot reasons I won't spoil for you here!)
The sequel is personally my favorite game, I liked the cast more than those in the original though many people like the original more (and an annoyingly large number of them are very rude about making sure people know it). But I would definitely suggest, if possible, checking out the original game first because it will give a lot more depth to things. Though you definitely can jump into the sequel if desired and not be totally lost. But it will dramatically change your perspective on various early-game events depending on what you know of thr first game and it's cast.
That said, expect it to be a fair time sink (especially if you want to try for the multiple ending variants--they aren't for the most part wildly different but there is one specific route that will change if a character kives or dies) and also as it's 20 years old now, it'll have some various technical limitations on the gameplay that aren’t present in more current entries in the series.
The sequel isn't as much of a time sink--however, while the restructuring of how Bamco classifies the games now puts it on more equal footing with the original, it was developed as more of a side sequel and not given the full resources of mainline game and it shows at various points. It does, however, have 2 different endings (and a "bad" game over end unique to one specific part of the endgame sequence) which are determined starting earlier in the game. So, if you want to go for both that's still more of a time sink than just one.
You could, though, if you opt to play one or both just do one playthrough on each or either and then look up alternate scenes via YouTube or something.
(Also, however, keep in mind when deciding if you want to play them or not that both games do have missable side quests that will flesh out characters and such so having a guide handy may help--or, again, you could probably find YT vids of them)

Old Fav Resources SellSouls
A couple of age old resources were my original inspirations for GigsList. I used to post some of their gigs on the original GigsList yahoo group. Since then my web tech geekdom has continued and I never stop learning.
As the way of some older successful ideas go, a certain famous casting resource got sold a few times. The last time in 2013 to a company called RZ Capital, with offices in Brooklyn, New York and Mexico. Yes that’s right… Mexico!
For readers not in the USA.  I asked a roadie friend from Los Angeles if a/any company with offices in Mexico is safe to do business with. I didn’t mention any company or business or person’s name. I can’t repeat my roadie friend’s response, due to dramatic language. Suffice to say it wasn’t rave reviews.  More on Mexico later in this piece.
The other shock I got was when I applied for a job in Australia with a certain famous casting resource  New business development. I still have a lot of high level contacts in Australia. It wasn’t that I didn’t get the job with a certain famous casting resource, that’s their loss. The shock was I got a bat response from a third party non-show-biz job site. OMFG! Sorry to God! Isn’t a certain famous casting resource supposed to be a recruiting site?
If you’ve been an avid reader of my scribbles for the past couple of years, you know I have a beef with bats. I also have a beef with arts and showbiz jobs outsourced to non arts and show biz. It seems that even major PR companies don’t know about bats. From what I’ve seen of recent publicity stunts, such as fake paparazzi car chases. How memorably embarrassing was that for the PR firm that recently signed them/her up?
Bats work with algorithms to keep human posts and websites  down in search rankings. Your posts and websites. Backstage.com  using third party non showbiz recruiters and bats help keeps your search rankings down. It also separates and dilutes creative industries and economies. It might not look that way on your screen. But that’s only on your screen to keep you sedated. So you don’t know about or look for the bats. My fav allegory for it is squirrels. Searching for squirrel vids for your cat, then play one or two squirrel vids. Next day every second and third vid in your streams is squirrels. Sometimes also on platforms you didn’t play the squirrel vids on.
The bat problem’s been around for quite a few years. But the more recent years it’s getting ultra nasty. Eating away at your’s and my incomes and human creative and production industries’ survival. a certain famous casting resource was bastion of old school arts and showbiz tradition to rely on. Now??? It’s gone the way of Nat Sherman cigarettes trying to look like American Spirits. It still sells, but… it doesn’t taste of the same old school traditional quality …
Back to Mexico. I tracked down the address of RZ Capital in Mexico on Googgle street view. It was an old broken door in a back alley. That so doesn’t make sense if a certain famous casting resource has swanky offices in Brooklyn and RZ on Madison Avenue New York. The staff in their swanky Brooklyn office look like nice people in their office photos. The old door in a back alley really doesn’t make sense. Especially in Mexico, where it’s a lot cheaper than New York or Brooklyn to live and do business. The Mexico office should be very swanky, yes? Or at least a swanky house or luxury apartment building. Nope, the broken old door in a back alley doesn’t make sense one iota.
I tried looking up a certain famous casting resource partner site. But it’s ownership also seems to be different businesses owned by other businesses.
So what gives? Now it gets even more creepy and controversial. In my web searches another RZ Capital kept popping up. Fosun RZ Capital, a Chinese investment group in China. Chinese gov kind of owns all Chinese companies in China. Basically they set up shell companies in other countries to buy companies in other countries. And thus hide the identity of the true owners who other countries might not get along with.
Seriously, sites like that have some explaining to do!

omg how do u make ur gifs so crisp and sharp?! 😭
hello babe sorry it took me some time to answer bc i was trying to find the resources i could send you. pls i didnt ignore you! im sorry it took me days😔 everything is under the cut bc it’s pretty long!
1. hd videos
always always always try to find the most high quality videos you can find! it doesn’t have to be 4k, 1080 is enough. i rarely download 720p, it can make do but it won’t be as good. so try to find 1080p vids! the quality of the videos make the difference in the world!
for youtube, i just use youtube downloader lol, i think any would suffice.
for downloading movies/tv shows, you can either torrent or use direct download links. here’s a link full of websites to download movies/shows. my personal fave is snahp(.)it and i use jdownloader as well. jdownloader is a download manager, so you can download several videos in one go and just more organized i guess. also i think it can bypass the unnecessary advertisements and/or yk those websites when you click on the download button but takes you somewhere else djsnsk i hope you understand this.
also do have a strong ad block on your browser. i use ublock and adblock on chrome.
2. photoshop
i use photoshop for my gifs. you can use photopea i think but my friend has tried it and for her it didnt delivered the maximum quality you know. there’s a tutorial on how to use photopea tho somewhere on tumblr but i dont have the link sorry:( personally, i’m more comfortable with photoshop.
if you are using window, try to crack it with GenP. you could search for GenP and click on the reddit link. i used genp to crack, im very happy with it. have no trouble until now!
if you use mac, search for adobezii reddit or click here!
3. sharpening
now!!! this is important too!!! you need to sharpen your gifs but be careful to not oversharpen them!! i think i followed this tutorial but i tweaked it at the end. you could use my action here, it consists of double sharpening and a touch of gaussian blur to soften it a bit. play around with sharpening!! find the right way for you!!! i do suggest to use double sharpening, it makes the difference in the world!!
4. coloring
tbh i’m still learning to color my gifs until now. but i think the contrast and brightness play some parts too. i just notice if the gifs are wayyyyy too bright it’ll lose it’s quality, the same when it’s over saturated. so i guess find the balance!!!
5. cropping/sizing
i always crop my gifs first before i sharpen them, i even crop them before i convert them to smart filter. idk but to me it’s better that way. follow the size that tumblr allows to ensure better quality!! since the beginning i set the width to be the tumblr size e.g. 540px with this setting of cropping and the height just kinda follows it. like i calculate what the height would be if i want the aspect ratio to be 3:2 or 5:4. gosh i hope this makes sense
6. exporting
ok so i dont really understand the science behind the option but this page goes into the great details between the difference settings. i almost exclusively use selective and diffusion with 100 dither and 256bit color. as always play around!! not every gif will be suitable with that setting or if you even like that setting.
7. screencapping
i dont really know if you screencap makes the quality better, but i do know it’s just easier to screencap than uh cutting the video in photoshop- especially when you try to gif a movie! i use potplayer (idk if it’s available on mac tho?)
this is my settings for screencap!
Tumblr media
after you have your screenshoted scenes, load them onto photoshop like this!
and just do your usual giffing process.
this gif tutorial is incredibly detailed and i recommend to read it if you havent!
i think that’s it!! sorry if it’s so long and not really understandable fjsj ask me if you have questions!!!!

I'm getting kinda worried that George might be feeling like every stream he does needs to be better than the last stream (for the main channel ofc) and the reason why he hasn't been streaming if because he has no idea what to stream? I mean, it's been so long since we've gotten a solo stream from him.
It's like how people comment on Karl always needing someone else on his stream for him to be able to stream and I just wonder if George is starting to go towards that path as well. I really hope that George knows that we would watch him play anything at this point really and he's just as entertaining by himself as he is with others. This is me desperate for a solo stream tbh, I like Dream Team, Sex Havers n Feral Boys dynamics but I feel like when he's on his own, he becomes a bit more open about himself?
Also, yeah I agree with you with the whole editing stuff as well but I also kinda understand George with the whole executive dysfunction. Streaming and editing are both kinda his jobs, it's hard to get another job going when you're stuck with this job that is very overwhelming for you to do that causes you to procrastinate on it and also hinders you from doing anything else as well because you need to finish that one first. Reminds me of when George said how his life qualify does down when he's in his editing arc, gosh so relatable.
I just hope he doesn't push himself too hard. I just want him to feel comfortable streaming whatever and whenever he wants, not everything has to be planned. Yeah, this is me in my missing George arc.
this ask is quite long (although i appreciate it) so my answer is it going to be under the cut!!
i mean yeah basically this, i don’t want to sound repetitive because i think i’ve said this a lot but i do also feel like george is falling into the trap of feeling like he has to put out big! and planned! streams on the gnf twitch channel when before it used to be for whatever (looks like it’s reflecting in his main channel on yt too, like how “go big or go home” the challenges have been feeling recently)
like i guess that’s what his alt is for and i understand the need to have a distinction between “high-effort” content and more lowkey stuff but even that seems like it’s become another burden for george when it comes to: finding stuff to do/play and feeling like he “has to” keep up on donations and gifted subs etc etc. it just makes me think about how at the end of the day some of the most beloved streams among the fandom have been the more lowkey ones or the ones which devolved into chaos naturally and although his planned streams are well-received view-wise and stuff (and his effort is always appreciated, words can’t explain how much i love the cooking stream for example) it isn’t worth seeing our cc missing in action for so long <\3 ppl have pointed out streamers like tubbo, ranboo and tommy have struck a good balance when it comes to delivering a steady stream of both high + “low” effort content both equally enjoyed by their viewers
when people say they’d watch george do anything they /mean it/ not in the “oh he can be lazy and put out any old rubbish and we’d eat it up” but in the fact that seeing him enjoy himself alone or with friends is more than enough, we’re drawn to his personality and whatever he puts out is going to be appealing most of the time! some people even resonate more with chilled out content that’s not so “high-effort” we are here for george not the games he plays or his concepted ideas, it’s him doing whatever, his reactions, his persona, him
i feel like george sometimes “falling” on needing other presences in his streams has more to do with the fact that he’s clearly the most comfortable/energetic among friends and bouncing off them is easier, he’s expressed before that he can’t talk for very long himself unprompted so having other people there must be comfortable but yes, solo streams are very treasured in that he seems more willing to open up when he’s alone and tell rambled stories and it’s just… nice i wish he’d see the appeal in occasional solo streams like when he used to speedrun! because he is actually good at carrying them and creating a good vibe, there’s a reason why so many ppl seem to be asking for one right now
and the editing stuff just makes me sad he should know that he doesn’t have to live like this i know he stubbornly wants to be the one to edit his videos (or dream because he trusts he’ll do them justice) but he should realise that there are ways he can better his quality of life in this aspect even looking into finding ppl willing to edit in a similar fashion and offering the resources to (hence my idea of accepting ppls work and looking through for contenders) or finding more effective ways to edit instead of dedicating all his time to one vid and clearly stressing out about it especially because technically he also works on his own terms? there’s nothing wrong with having set deadlines for yourself and feeling like an upload is due and i’m glad he’s not lazy in that aspect god bless or delivering content generally
but being purely unable to concentrate on anything else because you’re focussed on a single video for two weeks sounds awful
hey these are just my messy thoughts though at the end of the day i also take into account he could be busy with general life stuff i’m just making a commentary on him explaining why he disappears and why it’s so hard for him to edit in that time, hope he’s ok <3 and i hope the vid is a banger though i trust it will be, my cc is a perfectionist!

Hey, I’m starting to learn how to draw, and I was wondering if you had any overall tips?
-Use references. No matter what anyone says, references are the backbone of art. It doesn’t always have to be from photographs either (however if you’re lookin’ for realistic accuracy I highly recommend using photo reference over artist interpretation), but using references and learning how to understand what you’re looking at will help you improve on your craft and how you make art in general
-Practice and take your time. Exhausted as this piece of advice is, practice is literally the biggest thing for art, hell for anything you wanna get good at. Ya gotta put the time in. But that DOES NOT mean you suddenly have to dedicate every waking hour of every day for the rest of your life. Draw as often or as infrequently as you want; draw when you want to, for however long you want to, and try not to feel guilty for not practicing. Art is of course not a race or a popularity contest, but damn does it feel like one sometimes, especially online. The sooner you learn to be kind to yourself about your progress and acknowledge that no matter what, you’re progressing, the better in the long run
As for what to practice, it depends. If you’re lookin’ at improving specifically on something, let’s say hands for example, then draw a bunch of hands from different angles. Trace over photos (actual photos) a few times, get a feel of how a hand is structured, then try drawing it with reference, and then after you’re comfortable with that try drawing without reference. Otherwise, if you’re lookin’ to practice in general just... draw. Best way of learning is to make mistakes before you understand how to overcome it, so sometimes say “fuck anatomy I’m drawin this” and just draw it, mistakes be damned. Having fun is a pretty strong incentive, so if you’re gonna make some mistakes may as well enjoy yourself doin’ it.
-Don’t be afraid to ask for CONSTRUCTIVE critique.  One thing an artist has to learn is that you must be open to getting feedback for your work, but that said I emphasize constructive because sometimes the internet doesn’t know the difference between actual helpful advice and being an ass. As such, you do not need to be open to constructive feedback all the time. Sometimes all ya wanna do is draw a dog, post that dog and say “look, I drew a dog”. And that’s entirely fine. TL;DR, if you wanna improve in art, be willing to ask for feedback and then being open to it when received. But if you don’t want it, don’t be afraid to be honest about that too, just don’t be rude about it.
Personal tip for this one in specific, it might be helpful for you to find an environment geared specifically toward giving helpful feedback. In college we had critique days where the day was geared specifically toward giving each other feedback and constructive criticism on our works, but it happened only in that environment. Otherwise to receive critique you asked, or your classmate would ask you if you were open to feedback before saying anything.
-Dont worry too much about the material you use to create art. Just because you got the good, expensive shit it doesn’t automatically mean you’re better. The artist is the one who controls the medium, not the other way around. That said, there’s no wrong in wanting quality stuff, because sometimes the supplies honestly are that trashy. If you’d like some recs on digital or traditional materials for art I certainly don’t mind giving any based on my own personal experiences O:
-Take up either reading or watching art education resources. Regardless of whether or not you wanna make this a career, if you’re truly looking to get much better I’d suggest lookin’ at classes. I don’t mean pay for it though, not unless ya wanna. Youtube is a wealth of art advice, tutorials, demos, and hell some of your favorite artists might have Patreon rewards/benefits where they put out their own process vids where they talk about their techniques and such (a lot of the time as low as $1 a month). Don’t be afraid to look into it. If that doesn’t strike your fancy, buy artbooks or search for their PDFs online. “The Making Of” books in particular are my favorites, they give you a glimpse of the mindset, process, and pipeline of how things are done in the industry and from professional artists of all sorts in the field, and a lot of the time there’s a good bit of solid advice in them. Full-on tutorial books are helpful too, online or otherwise; one of my favs is Tuesday Tips by Griz and Norm.
-----------
Hope these were helpful at least somewhat owo

STREAM TO DONATE:  how to help when videos are taken down
yesterday, 13/6/2020, i made a post after realising that youtube is taking down stream-to-donate videos, such as zoe amira’s, for “violating terms of service”. when another video was linked and the post started gaining traction, i thought it’d be best to make another, more detailed post in case other people are experiencing the same problem.
1. FREE RESOURCES ON BLM.CARRD
https://blacklivesmatters.carrd.co/
new ways of helping are arriving every day, even if you are financially compromised, and this is where you will find them. some examples of free ways to help listed on the site:
the U-DON app. play mobile games, and the app’s revenue from ads goes straight to charities chosen by the creators. currently, 100% of this is going to BLM.
sign petitions. hundreds out there are behind on signatures and it takes a maximum of 10 seconds to help, quicker than having a glass of water (do that too).
learn black history and learn racism. remember that we will not end racism with money. whether you can donate or not, especially if you are white, the best thing to do for the movement is to begin to understand and communicate.
2. USE PLAYLISTS
you may have seen this post going around. the rules still stand as ever (apart from the boycotting of playlists), but unfortunately all the videos featured have been taken down.
instead, refer to this post by the same user with an updated playlist of 69 public videos. another alternative is this one with 49 public videos.
3. SEARCH MANUALLY
if you run out of playlists, there are many more stream-to-donates out there which i haven’t seen compiled in playlists. any combination of ‘blm / stream to donate / black lives matter / watch to donate / donate free’ in the YT search bar will yield results. a few i’ve found include:
Watching this will help DONATE to Black Lives Matter + my Honest Thoughts/how to make a REAL Change
BLACK LIVES MATTER || FITNESS MARATHON
24/7 Hip Hop Music - Donate with No Money by Listening #BlackLivesMatter
DONATE to BLACK LIVES MATTER with NO MONEY/ leaving your house (invest in the future for FREE)
A Moment of Calm on the Water in Edinburgh: Study and Work Ambience
4. REMEMBER THE RULES FOR WATCHING
essentials:
when starting a new video, do not go to another tab until you see an add. it’s a reminder to turn off your adblock.
let ALL ads run their course, do not cancel or skip any.
playlists do work, it’s turned out. but DO NOT refresh or loop the playlist when you reach the end. exit the page and click back in.
the YT player volume must be 50%<, and the vid quality 480p<. (< = or higher)
do not loop videos. watch at least 2-4 different ones before returning to the original.
extras for making the algae rhythm work even better:
like and share the vids to your other social media.
COMMENT. one tactic is to leave fun facts, no matter how boring or widely-known - it dispels awkwardness/not knowing what to comment, and interests other people. win-win!
when talking about analytics/tactics on any site including YT, do not type words like ‘al / go / rit / hm’ or ‘sp / am’ or ‘vi / ews’ in normal, full form - this may get posts or videos fl@gg3d. instead, give them homonyms (e.g. algae rhythm) or replace certain letters (e.g. fl@gg3d).
5. MOST IMPORTANTLY...
give as much love and platforming as possible to stream-to-donates by black youtubers.
the majority of vids i’ve seen in the mainstream playlists are from large channels by white creators. obviously it’s fantastic to have them fundraising for the cause, as many as possible are needed. but use this opportunity to help black channels grow - see on any recommended or trending page how many of the biggest sub counts currently belong to white creators.
NB. i am white. this ref list is meant with the absolute intention of being an ally to the cause and i mean no offence or harm. however, i appreciate that intent and result are two different things. under my white privilege and [garfield voice] lack of immunity to propaganda or internalised racism, please tell me if anything i say/do here is out of place or harmful so that i may correct myself.

9 Board Game YouTubers I Follow & Why (plus a few others)
In the literal dim and distant past when I started boardgaming (honestly, the biggest threat was tallow wax on your board), the internet was still accessed by whatever IP address you could remember off the top of your head (there’s no place like 127.0.0.1 as they sayI) - and the only TikTok was the clock ticking, waiting for half of Louise Nurding’s left leg to download only to realise it was Anne Widdecombe and you’d hit the wrong link on a BB. Boardgames had some quiet and shady corners of the internet, in those same Bulletin Boards, there was one for HeroQuest and Space Crusade when they came out. But sadly, if you wanted to see a boardgame being played or learn the rules, you either had to go round to your friend Tim’s house where he had a new chits-for-days wargame going, or sit down and actually read the rulebook yourself. As a result, I bought some interesting games in my time, including a game called Operation Overlord - a mighty chit-tastic WW2 N African campaign monster that I bought in desperation from the Games Workshop in Manchester on the first morning that it opened in 1979 (?) as we were so far back in the queue that there wasn’t a space marine to be had for miles. But now, we have a plethora of kindly folk available on our blistering shiny Windows NT 486sx machines to inform and delight us in full 8-bit glory. Everything from reviews, buying guides, rules tutorials and even painting & crafting guides, we can be bathing in just about whatever aspect of board or wargaming we so desire in an effort to stave off the clattering realisation that it’s been over 3 months since we spent any quality time with another breathing soul outside our houses. The question gets frequently asked on boardgame FaceAche forums “What YouTube channels are worth my time and why?” so in an effort to throw my own towel into that controversial ring, here’s my pick of probably 9ish, maybe more by the end, but let’s start with 9 in no particular order..... 1) 3 MINUTE BOARDGAMES
Tumblr media
One of the first board games ‘er across the table (TM) and I bought together was a copy of Gloom from a little games and comic shop halfway round the world in Hamilton NZ, Mark 1 Comics. As we were achingly close to moving to NZ a few years ago, we’ve kept up with many aspects of what might have been our life over there, so it was a delight to discover Jarrod (and now Stephanie) on YouTube, a friendly and familiar accent reviewing board games. But it’s not just the NZ vibe that I love, Jarrod does a great job of cutting thru the hyperbole and bloat often associated with trying to keep YouTube vids ‘long for the algorithm’ (ugh) and just gives very pragmatic reasons for a game either joining or leaving his collection. He has a great approach, and it’s nice to see him finally on camera instead of the disembodied voice. Great reviewer, and Stephanie is utterly hilarious. 2) THE BROTHERS MURPH
Tumblr media
Mike & Nick are two of the most engaging brothers on YouTube let alone just in the boardgaming community. Their series on thrift shop finds has dredged up some hilarious and often tragic specimens from the grand days of Palitoy, MB and Parker Games.  They are also masters at ‘speed reviewing’ often piling reviews of 50 or 60 games into the same number of minutes. I think I favour the ‘don’t outstay your welcome’ approach to YouTube in general, and the Brothers Murph are at great ease with this philosophy and yet they take on simple party games thru to the heaviest euros with the same distillation equipment, and yet their reviews are never trivial or throw away. We had the chance to chat to Nick at Airecon this year and he was a lovely guy, slightly blown away by the fact that people liked his channel. He’s also an awesome artist too.
3) ACTUALOL
Tumblr media
There are many reviewers on the web who have cost me a fair amount of money, the worst being Zee Garcia, however, a close second is Jon Purkiss aka Actualol. Jon has a terrifying gift for finding games, and especially ridiculously affordable games, that I buy on spec and then end up absolutely loving. Jon has a light and breezy style which is instantly engaging - I also really want his comfy chair (surely in exchange for a nice review on here Jon???). His videos are tidy and concise and yet still convey a deep enthusiasm and joy for games. His reviews very clearly portray what the setting of the game is and what you’ll be doing, without getting embroilled in the rules. He always has great footage of the game on the table (please reviewers - look at the ratio of your face to the game you’re talking about - less than 10% game and i’m walkin’) and often favours the less pricey end of the market which suits me fine. Brilliant games I love thanks to Jon include: Second Chance, Magic Maze and Ninja Academy
4) OUR FAMILY PLAYS GAMES
Tumblr media
There’s not much to be said about Mik & Starla Fitch that cannot be gained from watching a mere 3-4 minutes of their channel. For sheer exuberance aimed squarely at a love for bringing families together via our glorious hobby, you cannot top these guys. If you are ever - EVER - feeling slightly lacklustre about gaming or losing your mojo for whatever reason - heck if you are just feeling slightly down, treat yourself to 10 minutes in the company of these two excellent human beings. Their reviews and playthru’s have all the humanity you need in a game and after five minutes you are thinking “Is the US too far to go just for a gaming evening?” We’d both utterly love to sit across the table from these lovely people and just play, and I can’t say that about every reviewer, I’ll be honest. Their reviews are often centred around unloved classics (watch their vid dedicated to why they love Catan as an example - you’ll be clicking Buy Now before your know it) and also some great quirky unknowns that I’m trying to hunt down even now. They’ve just had a brilliant couple of boosts from both a spot of Good Morning America recently, and becoming reviewers for the mighty Dice Tower. I’m immensely grateful for a tweet by Rodney Smith for pointing me in their direction, my social media is a much brighter place with the Fitch family in it.
5) RAHDO RUNS THROUGH
Tumblr media
“Heeeeey Everybody”. One of the first board game reviewers I ever caught on YouTube was the inimitable Richard Ham aka Rahdo. And I’m so glad I did. I would genuinely never sit down and try and learn a game from one of Rahdo’s playthrus, they are what I imagine being in a wind tunnel full of 50 tonnes of feathers is like. BUT and this is crucial - if I want an idea of what a game is going to feel like to play, there is no finer deliverer of the remote game experience than Mr Richard Ham. His unique ability to explain how a game is going to work, turn by turn; the decisions you will make; the things you’ll have to consider; the short and long term goals; are all brilliantly covered in one of Rahdo’s videos. His ability to make different choices for his ‘ghost partner’ Jen (who does exist in real life, we have bought jewelry off her, she’s lovely) also adds a real dynamism to the games, showcasing the flexibility in a design for different play strategies. Rahdo tends towards 2 player games and usually at the heavier end of the scale, but if there’s a game you are thinking of buying, check Mr Ham out first!
6) WATCH IT PLAYED
Tumblr media
It’s often been said that Canadians are some of the politest folk on the planet, but when it comes to ranking Canadians, well, I’m sure they’d be too humble to rank each other so I’ll have to. Rodney Smith is the loveliest man in the world. There, end of article. But it’s true. We’ve been watching Rodney since we first got confused about the rules for Mice & Mystics (which we still got wrong but that wasn’t Rodney’s fault) and his ever chirpy, ever positive approach to his rules rundowns is utterly remarkable and frankly, enviable. And it’s his attention to detail and clarity for explaining rules that have rightly made Rodney one of the most important resources in the gaming hobby. If you have ever struggled over a rulebook and haven’t raced to Watch It Played, I will guarantee you will have spent far longer on that rulebook and lost way more hair than you ever needed to. We had the great honour of playing Rajas of the Ganges with Rodney at Airecon in 2019, and I mugged up on the rules sooo much. Regular imbibers of this rag will know my sloth for reading rulebooks is legendary but fortunately ‘er across the table (TM) loves them. But, for the 3 days running up to our trip to Harrogate, I did nothing but read that rulebook - this was THE Rodney Smith, you can’t get a rule wrong with Rodney. But of course, nerves kicked in and I could barely remember the rules of Snap, but the nicest man in the world could not have been nicer. Really, quantum mechanics has proved it. He was just the same man off the computer telly. Funny, engaging, warm and happy to chat as well as play (which I was also really nervous about doing!), if you don’t watch Rodney, are you really internetting?
7) TABLETOP MINIONS
Tumblr media
“Pachow” From boardgames to wargames. As well as my slight addiction to cardboard, my other opiate overlord is 28mm plastic miniatures. Specifically those involved in tabletop skirmish games like Malifaux, 7TV, Fallout Wasteland Warfare, GuildBall and a smattering of others. Though recently more focused on the frankly insane amount of content being released by Games Workshop, Tabletop Minions is presented by the splendid Uncle Atom. (In fact, I identify his content so much as Uncle Atom’s stuff that I honestly had to double check the name of the channel for this article!). My plastic habit uncle (sounds so wrong, but so true) has possibly the gentlest delivery of anyone on the internet. It’s not so much content, as therapy. I know the net is awash with AMSR channels at the mo, but if you don’t want to listen to some overmonetized southern californian with some bubble wrap and a large capsule condenser mic, just hop over to TTM and listen to the Uncle for 5 minutes. He’s like a soothing bubble bath of content about painting figures, philosophy of the hobby, general art & design principles, and great life advice. He also wears a fez.
8) GIRL PAINTING
Tumblr media
“Hello Tchoobies!” I painted my first 28mm figure when i was about 12ish - it was, ironically, a space marine of some sort - the old clunky Ral Partha ones. It looked terrible, but each model got a bit better till I stopped for some reason a few years later. When I got into Malifaux a few years ago (ie decades, several of them, later), I knew I was going to have to get back into painting; heaps of grey plastic does not a skirmish game make. (Little did I know I would have to revisit my microscopy days either when assembling damn Bayou Gremlins!)  Two channels were recommended to me, the Esoteric Order of Gamers (more later) and Girl Painting. EOG put me on the path to believing I could paint again, but Alexandra at Girl Painting actually made me believe I could learn to do it well. GP’s approach to painting figures, terrain and vehicles is based on solid art theory. Her explanation of colour relationships and the colour wheel is something I can quote to this day. All of the techniques that I lean on so heavily in day to day painting both for table and display I learnt from Girl Painting. Correct use of washes, wet blending,  non-metallic metals, shading, drybrushing, highlighting, model reading, all of it from studying intently, often with a brush actually in my hand while watching the channel. I cannot recommend GP enough if you want to put paint to plastic. Whatever your ability, you will learn something from this hidden gem of a channel.
9) ESOTERIC ORDER OF GAMERS
Tumblr media
Another dang fine antipodean and another slightly unusual channel. I have a terrible, terrible memory when it comes to rules. In our early days, we also had a a lot of games with seemingly very over-bloated rulebooks - FFG games basically. I suddenly realised what I wanted was to lift the lid of a box and find in the lid, a summary of the important stuff i needed to remember about the game. Apparently I was not the only one. In 2013 a chap known as Universal Head started publishing an amazing series of rules summaries which condensed down some of the bloatiest rulesbooks down to often one or 2 pages of A4. It was a (pardon the pun) gamechanger for me. I can’t count the number of games in our collection that have a friendly sheet of A4 now as the first thing you see when you open the box. They are brilliant. And he’s still doing it to this day. I would argue that the more useful leg to his activities is the website rather than YouTube channel, but his channel does have the aforementioned brilliant figure painting tutorials, unboxing videos and some crafting stuff. The website is definitely the place for the rules summaries and also a fantastic resource for build-it-yourself foamcore box inserts. Though Folded Space have now made box inserts pretty affordable, there’s still no feeling like the satisfaction of building your own, and I would argue that some of EoG’s designs actually make more sense than some of the Folded Space ones anyway. AND THE OTHER ONES (Who probably don’t really need the exposure, but hey, only 11 people probably read this so......)  Why aren’t these on the list above? Just because I wanted to highlight some of the more marginal channels above or more specialist rather than the pure reviewers. SHUT UP & SIT DOWN Possibly my favourite channel on YouTube, whose name sounds more like a menacing Yorkshire greeting than a boardgame channel. SU&SD seem to be a real Marmite issue on the board game communities. And I genuinely don’t understand it. Yes, their reviews are often really funny but honestly, if that’s all you take away then you are missing some amazingly detailed and thought provoking work. Quinns and crew’s reviews are some of the most measured and balanced reviews in the gameyverse. Their reasoning for the conclusions they come to are incredibly well thought through and often very surprising based on the tone of the rest of the review. They have steered me to some games I would never have looked twice at and steered me away from some very shiny games that I might have blown a lot of money on otherwise. Flagposting great alternatives is also a signature of their reviews, and that again has often lead me to some fantastic games. We don’t always agree (their recent review of 10 Oink Games was savage imho) but we always disagree for the right reasons. Again, I would argue their website is actually a better overall resource, especially their podcasts which are superb, but all their content is fantastic.
in a highly similar vein I would add NO PUN INCLUDED. Efka & Elaine produce some of the most thoughtful and intelligent boardgame review content today, and often for some of the deepest and most complex games. The joy of boardgaming is that it is highly subjective and there are lots of times when NPI like/dislike a game that I do/don’t, but they are engaging and warm enough as presenters to hit you with a gentle subtext that says “It’s ok - I know we like this game, we get that you don’t, it doesn’t make any of us bad people, just people y’know, have a sandwich with us”  Efka criticising a game reminds me of when Dennis Healey once described an argument with Geoffrey Howe as being ‘savaged by a dead sheep’, though not in the cynical manner of the original. The criticism is loaded with that crucial dose of ‘hear me out’ that is sadly lacking in 90% of all other reviewers out there. Efka & Elaine are no GoggleBox reviewers, they are the real deal - they genuinely understand how games work and why. The sheer moral turmoil that Efka expressed over the cultural issues in Rising Sun was some of the most thoughtful YouTube content I have ever seen. I just wanted to do a little shout out to Johannes & Sunniva at BOARD GAMING RAMBLINGS - I don’t have as much to say as they are relatively new on my radar, but I have really enjoyed their content so far and find them to be like one of those adorable gaming couples that you might see every once in a while at your gaming group and have a blast with, and then not see for months and go “Awh - I really miss Johannes & Sunniva - where’d they go?” that feeling, you know the one. Adorable, with a hint of the esoteric. Also, a quick but important mention to the other titan of boardgame rules explanation that is Paul Grogan of GAMING RULES!. Like Rodney Smith, Paul is meticulous about rules explanation and is really clear and simple to follow, even for very heavy games, which Paul tends to do more of than Rodney, which is probably why I end up watching Paul slightly less, but certainly not for any less quality. Paul has such a reputation in the industry that he now works closely with many designers and publishers to help craft the best rulebooks around as a consultant. So that’s it - congrats for making it through folks. Didn’t think it was going to run this long, but turns out.... I quite like a lot of the YouTubers I watch - who knew? Until next time... happy gaming y’all.

"How Goldie Chan Became 'The Oprah of LinkedIn' Using LinkedIn Video" (Inbound Success Ep. 88)
LinkedIn is like the wild west for video creators, so what does it take to be a LinkedIn Top Voice and what the Huffington Post calls the "Oprah of LinkedIn?"
Goldie Chan
This week on The Inbound Success Podcast, I interviewed Goldie Chan, otherwise known as the "green haired Oprah of LinkedIn." Goldie has more than 45,000 followers on LinkedIn and garnered 3 million+ views on her daily LinkedIn video in under a year. She's been named a LinkedIn Top Voice (the highest honor bestowed by the platform) and is the owner of LinkedIn's longest-running daily show.
Goldie is indisputably one of the top thought leaders when it comes to LinkedIn video, and in this episode, she gets into the nitty gritty of how she approaches her LinkedIn Video strategy, including how she shoots her videos, writes the copy for the accompanying posts, and more.
This week's episode of The Inbound Success Podcast is brought to you by our sponsor, IMPACT Live,  the most immersive and high energy learning experience for marketers and business leaders. Some highlights from my conversation with Goldie include:
Goldie has the longest running daily video channel on LinkedIn, and has produced more than 600 daily consecutive LinkedIn videos.
Goldie produces and edits all of her LinkedIn videos herself and she says the key is to start by creating a video strategy and determining what the focus of your video content will be.
It took Goldie some time to build up her following and her advice for others is to approach it like a long term play and be committed to consistently producing content.
All of Goldie's video content is available through her LinkedIn profile which she refers to as her "channel." She does this to accustomize people to the notion that her profile is her content home base on LinkedIn.
Goldie uses the branded hashtag #DailyGoldie in all of her LinkedIn video posts and recommends that anyone who is serious about LinkedIn video use their own branded hashtag as a way of making it easier for followers to find their video posts.
She does not think it is a good idea to use what she calls a "hashtag wall" - essentially a long list of hashtags - because it does not help with YouTube SEO and is confusing for followers.
In terms of video quality, Goldie believes that people gravitate towards authenticity on the platform, so you don't need incredibly high quality video (and sometimes overly-produced videos can backfire). But she did say that videos should be in-focus, with good frame quality, good audio, and good lighting, and you should not be too close to the camera.
If possible, your LinkedIn videos should also be captioned (and if you're only posting videos once a week, captioning is a must).
Goldie has a very specific structure for the copy she creates to accompany her LinkedIn video posts, but she says you can create whatever structure you like so long as you don't use hashtag walls, you don't tag too many people, and you're not too salesy.
She uses emojis in her posts but says that if you do this, they need to be relevant and contextual.
She advises LinkedIn users to never use an emoji in their name on LinkedIn because it can break LinkedIn's code.

Transcript
Kathleen Booth (Host): Welcome back to the Inbound Success Podcast. Welcome back to the Inbound Success Podcast, my name is Kathleen Booth and I am your host. And this week I am especially excited to say that my guest is Goldie Chan, who is known as the green-haired Oprah of LinkedIn.
Welcome, Goldie. Goldie Chan (Guest): Thank you for having me.
Goldie and Kathleen all smiles while recording this episode
Kathleen: I am really excited, maybe a little too much, it might be a little weird.
About Goldie Chan
Kathleen: So I'll just say a few words about you, and then I'm going to ask you to introduce yourself to our audience. So just, Goldie, I started following her because I was, personally, interested in getting better at LinkedIn video, and her name kept popping up, and her face kept popping up. And I just quickly realized that she was the one really doing it first, and so I started to LinkedIn stalk her, and then Twitter stalk her.
But she's got her own social media agency, Warm Robots, she is an influencer in the LinkedIn space, she's on the Producers Guild of America's new media council.
You put your hand in a lot of different things, and I probably won't do as great a job of covering it all as you would. So tell my audience a little bit more about you, and how you came to be this LinkedIn influencer.
Goldie: Sure. So I've worked, historically, in digital marketing, both on B2B and B2C side for over a decade; which always surprises people. And I worked from that ground up, I worked from the very lowest level entry level position to where I am today, and very different divergence from the traditional path.
But I currently am a contributor on Forbes, I write about storytelling and personal branding in the digital age, and I absolutely love my column that I get to write about that. And I have the longest running daily channel currently on LinkedIn, I am over 600 daily, consecutive videos right now, so I started in the beta and I kept going.
And one of the most interesting things, I think, is when you are doing daily consecutive content, which I'd personally never done before, you learn so much about yourself, your work ethic, your creative process, and how you can also teach that creative process and, hopefully, that work ethic to other people and explain what works and what doesn't work.
And I also teach a few LinkedIn learning courses, one which is on LinkedIn video, and if you have a library card in California, Texas, or New York, I'm not sure about other states, you can get access to lynda.com for free, that's L-Y-N-D-A, and you can actually watch all three of my courses for free.
Kathleen: That's great, I love that. And I want to just pause for a second and underscore something you just said, because I feel like it would be easy to gloss over it.
Goldie: Yeah.
Kathleen: Over 600 daily, consecutive videos on LinkedIn. So if you're listening, she has posted a new video every single day for over 600 days. I don't think you could find many people out there who have done anything consistently in their life for 600 days straight; let alone produce video and content.
I heard you talk about this, I think, it was Social Media Week Toronto, I watched your talk on YouTube. And you talked about you were going into the desert with friends, and you realized you hadn't done your video and you, literally, had to leave the desert and go film it because you didn't want to break your streak.
Can you talk a little bit about just that consistency, because that's pretty amazing?
What It's Like To Produce 600 Consistent Daily Videos
Goldie: Sure. So I had been used to doing content for clients or content in-house. And this is very different, because there's a definitive strategy behind it, you don't do content first, you do the strategy first, then you bucket the content, and you do one entire process; and when I started doing video on LinkedIn, I didn't do any of that.
I was actually on a hiatus between my last role as Head of Marketing at a full time analytics startup, and getting my next role as Head of Marketing at some other sort of startup, and I was taking a month sabbatical. And during that month sabbatical, I got into the LinkedIn video beta and I decided, for really one of the first times in my life, that I would be doing content that wasn't geared towards monetization; it didn't necessarily have a goal, it was content that I would enjoy.
So the first 50 videos, or so, I did on branding and metrics of pop culture phenomenons, because this is how big of a marketing nerd I am, this is what I consider fun to do. So I talked about things like Harry Potter, trains in the US, ride sharing, all sorts of really interesting, different things that have really permeated, specifically, American culture.
And I think it was so interesting, because the first 10 or so I did I thought, "This is so painful." Really fun, but it's also painful because if you've never done daily video content before, and you do 10 in a row, it's a lot. Ten videos in a row, that's almost two weeks' worth of video, so your schedule changes from everyday you might create content to everyday you have to create content.
And this is what got me through 600 daily videos, this is what got me, truly, through the biggest and hardest milestone, which was 365 days or a full year of video. And every single one of those videos were unique, original content; so nothing was ever repurposed, it was 100 percent unique, original content. And I think what got me through that is that there was never a plan B.
Kathleen: Yeah.
Goldie: So in all things in life, usually you have a plan B like, "If this doesn't work, then I just won't post today, I'll post two videos tomorrow, it'll be fine."
There was never, ever a plan B. I was on a flight back from London to the US and my video wasn't uploading, so I ended up uploading this video of me running across the gang plank onto the plane; that was just like a very short clip. I essentially live on airplanes too, so I travel a lot, so my fight with wifi is always ... My battle and love affair with WiFi; we have a very contentious relationship.
Kathleen: I was just going to say, you can never go off grid.
Goldie: Yeah, I never can go off grid. But I had this really great, edited long video, super thoughtful that I did for that day, and I couldn't upload it. So I upload this video of me running saying, "I am trying to upload this video, I'm going to see which of these videos uploads, hopefully you guys will see one of them." And ironically, of course, what video uploaded was the video of me running. This video uploads, which then it actually blew up, which is the best part because no one had ever uploaded, of course, a video a very meta video of them running to try to upload-
Kathleen: To try to upload a video.
Goldie: A video of them. So it's a video of me holding my laptop, which is attempting to upload the main video, and I'm on my camera phone videoing me running down this to catch my flight. So-
Kathleen: I love it.
Goldie: Shoot a meta video and what it takes in order to get, I think, if anybody's thinking about doing a 365 day challenge which is, to me, that's the true challenge. Can you do one day of video for an entire year?
I think it really does change you to make that kind of commitment to creating content, original content, not repurposed content every single day; because repurposed content is easy. When you don't feel like being on camera, you don't feel like, say, necessarily seeing yourself, or hearing your own voice, or seeing your work.
It's very easy to repurpose content, it's so much harder to create truly original content every single day.
Kathleen: Yeah, I have so many questions that I want to ask you about this. Starting with, really, is it ... They say that content creation, whether it's written or video, or what have you, is like a muscle that you have to exercise.
Doing this for 365 days, did you feel like it got easier? And like working out, where you get into the groove and you're like, "Oh, yeah, I can do this, I'm in a routine?" Or did that challenge persist throughout that time? How did that play out for you?
Goldie: I will say it's so funny we're talking about this today, because today I struggled with ... Today was video 610 for me. I struggled with doing a daily video today, and I almost repurpose an older video, which I do sometimes; now that I've passed 365 mark.
So it is a problem that continues to pop up is creating original ideas, coming up with a concept, actually executing on that concept and/or editing through my insanely giant backlog of video content that I still have. I still have several unedited videos that I will release at some point this year.
You never quite get over that hump of there will be days that are really, really tough; but overall, overall, it does get easier. So it is like working out where you may just have some bad days where you don't want to go the gym but, overall, you're so used to going to the gym. I'm so used to every single day, I will upload a video onto LinkedIn, and I could not do any other content.
I do social media for a living, but I could not access any of my other platforms, I could just avoid them all. But I know that I will always go on LinkedIn, and I will always upload some sort of video content period. And that is a promise I've made to myself as a content creator, and so it's a little bit different than if you were doing it for a client.
But also, once again, a lot of people assume that I outsource most of this to my team; I actually don't. And I don't do it, partially, because I am crazy but also, partially, because my team has other things that they're handling, too. They're handling a lot of the client work, they're doing other things, so I don't want to, necessarily, distract my team from that.
Although this year for myself, personally, because once again, I've gone over that 365 day hump, I will be giving them a little bit more, especially of the editing to do as I'm moving forward with my content creation. But I think it's really important for even if you're doing, say, a 50 video challenge to do it all yourself, because it teaches you what you need when you do hire somebody to handle this for you.
Kathleen: Yeah, amen. I am currently trying to do it myself, and it's been an interesting journey; so far I managed to get a couple of videos out. But I'm not highly technical, and I think a lot of people listening probably aren't either. You have your team, that's your web developers, your video producers. I have a whole video production team that works for me, but I'm not having them do this. Because right now, it's not a business strategy, that's something I'm doing for myself.
Creating a LinkedIn Video Strategy
Kathleen: So if someone's listening, I guess, you've mentioned starting with strategy; so let's actually start in the right order. When you're talking to somebody who's thinking about maybe investing in LinkedIn video for themselves, or to promote their business, how do you talk them through conceptualizing a strategy for it?
Goldie: Sure. So the thing I start with is, what I start with with all my clients when I think about content in general, which is, who is your target demographic, who are you're trying to speak to? Because then it's so much easier to figure out the kind of content that you should be doing.
So if your audience is very serious, or your audience is very light-hearted, this changes the kind of content that is optimized for the audience you want to speak to.
So I like to think about it as an audience or demographic, first piece; so that's number one is thinking about your demographic.
Number two is, what is either your personal brand, if you're coming at it from your personal brand, or what is the brand brand? What is the keywords, what is the thought process behind the brand that you're trying to promote?
So those are the two really big key pieces, and people tend to hop, skip over this. And they're like, "You know what would be fun? Is a show about blog." And I'm like, "That sound fun." And I was looking at to literally do a show about blog, and then it took off, but properly strategizing for this, you want to think about who your audience is, first. And if you do run your own business, and you are looking for, say, more customers or more clients, who are those customers and clients, and what kind of content would be of the highest value to them?
How Long Does It Take to Build a Following With LinkedIn Video?
Kathleen: Okay, now in your case, how long did it take before you started to see traction with your videos and gain followers?
Goldie: I'm laughing a little bit, which you guys can't see because this is audio only. I will say the first 30 days I did it, or the first ... I don't remember what month, I started in August; that's right. So the first month I did videos, all of my friends, including some who are content creators on other platforms, they all thought I was absolutely bananas, they thought I was nuts.
They were like, "Why are you making videos on this platform? You're getting maybe 100 views if you're lucky." So giving everybody my numbers when I started, so I'd get, maybe, 100 views if I was very lucky, maybe 10 likes if I was super duper lucky, and I just enjoyed the process of creativity.
So it took me a while before I saw traction, and I think it's really interesting that people now want that immediate traction, especially on LinkedIn video.
And yes, you can get there faster than you can on other platforms, but I had a meeting once with this young lady, she's super nice. She had done three videos; so just three videos 1, 2, 3. And she said, "Okay, how do I land a brand like WeWork, like you have a partnership with? I've done three videos, they've all been incredibly well."
It was so interesting to me to hear that she had only done, and I use that word strongly, only done three pieces of content and then expected a giant brand deal out of that. You have to put in the time, the energy, and the effort, so you have to put in more pieces of content. So the in this case, it was both quality and quantity that was being ignored.
And that is one thing to think about, which is when you're strategizing and thinking about doing LinkedIn video, can you commit to doing at least 10 videos? Can you commit to doing at least 20 videos? Can you commit to doing enough videos for you to see if you can get traction over two months, three months, as opposed to thinking, "If I release one video a day for a week, I will get 12 new clients."
If it works for you that way, amazing; please teach me. But if it doesn't work for you that way, a lot of it is duration and being in it for a longer haul. Because with all video content creation, you need more time to build an audience, even if your content is amazing.
What Is a 'LinkedIn Channel'?
Kathleen: Yeah. Now you talked about having the longest running channel on LinkedIn. And this is something so interesting to me, because I don't think, probably, 90 some odd percent of people even know what the concept of a LinkedIn channel is.
So this is a two part question. The first part is, can you explain what that is and how it functions? And then, also, I would love to understand from you, if you are somebody who is going to commit themselves to a consistent LinkedIn video strategy, how important is it to approach it from, like, a channel mentality?
Goldie: So as opposed to other platforms like, say, YouTube, where you have a distinct channel, so your YouTube URL is your channel, it's the place that houses all your videos.
Right now LinkedIn, unless you use a third party, doesn't have the ability to host your videos on LinkedIn in a separate video tab or video functionality.
So when I say 'Channel', I essentially mean all of my content, so all of my content goes through the funnel of being on my profile. So in this case, my LinkedIn profile is my channel, and when I work with brands on their strategy on LinkedIn, and then I usually call their brand page 'Their channel'.
It's just slightly different terminology, but it helps people also understand that this is a place to consistently see content, because we expect a channel to consistently have content. And, once again, I have to emphasize that word 'Consistent'.
Kathleen: Yeah.
Goldie: Now I'm completely forgetting what your second question was.
Should You Have a Branded LinkedIn Hashtag?
Kathleen: Well, so I'll help you out with that, because I have a second part to the question you just answered. Which is, in your case, you have your profile, which is your channel, but you also are very good about consistently using a hashtag, #DailyGoldie-
Goldie: Yes.
Kathleen: With your posts. And you can click on that hashtag and, actually, there's the ability to follow the DailyGoldie hashtag. So I guess the second part of the question's really, if somebody is going to really double down and commit themselves, obviously, your point about consistency is crucial; and I think that you've made that really, really clear.
You're not going to get traction unless you're consistent and the quality is there. How important is it also to try to brand yourself with whether ... Like I've noticed, you've done a hashtag, I also follow Chantel Soumis, who has #ChantelShares and Alyssa Mangaoang who has #AlyssaHQ. How important is it to have a branded hashtag to make it even easier for people to really follow that feed?
Goldie: So when I began doing LinkedIn videos, hashtag search in August of 2017, was not what hashtag search is now. So I actually didn't even start doing #DailyGoldie until my audience asked me to do a hashtag, so they could better find my content. Which I love this because this is such an example of chicken and the egg, horse and the cart.
I wasn't actually the original one who asked to do a hashtag, my audience was the one that asked me to do a hashtag so they could better find and aggregate my content. So moving forward, one of the things I do tell people is, "Have your own branded hashtag."
However, the thing that I super strongly recommend against is having multiple hashtags.
So some people, if you notice, they have a hashtag block, they have what works really well on Instagram, but it doesn't work as well on LinkedIn. And why is that? It's because LinkedIn's hashtag search is not as mature as, say, Instagram's hash tag search.
So if you have three or four hashtags that you're trying to own, it's much harder also for people to follow all three of those, remember all three of those, it's just much easier for people to remember one hashtag. So having one hashtag that you own that has, maybe, your name or your brand name in it will make it so much easier.
And even when I started doing live streaming, because now there's #LinkedinLive, I started doing #GoldieLive, which I might keep up with and I might not just because I think it's nice just to have my live streams be a little bit more unbranded.
And I know that is very counterintuitive, because everybody wants everything to be hyper branded; I, myself speak on branding quite a bit. But I think when something is so new, and in such beta form, you can look a little bit over done when you're over branded.
So when everything is hyper graphics, everything has an intro screen, etc, you lose some of that genuine qua- ... especially if you're a vlogger. This is not necessarily true if you're a brand.
But if you are trying to represent your personal brand, you lose that genuineness, you lose that authenticity, because people are having to watch 15 seconds of an intro to every single one of your live streams, and they all look the same too. Which is, to me, visually un-stimulating-
Kathleen: Yeah.
Goldie: Not interesting and not, necessarily, super creative.
LinkedIn Video Production Quality
Kathleen: So that brings me to an interesting question, which is around production quality. I think you referenced wanting to convey a genuine feeling. And I feel the same way, like things that are too overly produced, they just don't seem authentic on.
And so what are the guard rails around this? Like, is there a low end that you shouldn't go below? And is there a high end that you shouldn't exceed?
Goldie: Well, it really depends. So one of the things that I tell people now is that LinkedIn is like YouTube year one. So even though LinkedIn, gosh, I'm coming up on two years now of doing LinkedIn video, even though it's maybe closer to its second year of birth, it still is so, so new as a platform, and that's why people are excited about things like blogs.
People are excited about these videos that feel a little bit more unedited, because they feel more different on a platform that is ... There's so many ads that I see all the time on LinkedIn, or just things that are constantly being super salesy on LinkedIn; so it's so refreshing to see things that are a little bit more genuine on LinkedIn now.
But let's go over the guardrails, so still, when you're creating content on LinkedIn, you want it to be as clear as it can be, as non-blurry as it can be, you want the framing to be nice. So I recently switched over to doing a couple more vertical videos just because I'm also experimenting with IGTV right now. And one of my personal pet peeves with vertical video that I've seen, is when people get too close.
So you guys can't see this, but I'm framing my face, and I call it the serial killer face. So when you are too close in the frame, your head fills up 90 percent of a vertical frame, you are too close. So you want to make sure that your head is maybe two thirds of the frame in a vertical video if vertical video is what you want to do.
And this is, of course, our beautiful rule of thirds, which is a classic rule, classic video rule, it's not one I made up.
And it really is helpful for actually, subconsciously, being a more interactive and engaging video. Because you're not in other people's faces, which is attention getting for one video.
And I've had other people who will dispute me on this, other marketers, who say, "It's good." They like this format because it always gets in people's faces. That's good for one video as a shock value, however, if I noticed that all your videos are disturbingly close, I probably won't want to watch more than one video, because it's off putting to me, because it feels like you're staring into my soul; and I don't know that I want that.
But having the proper framing for a vertical video, if that's what you decide to do, is important.
Now LinkedIn alternates between the style and the type of video that you can create that's optimal.
If I have enough time, because I am extra nuts, I like to shoot actually vertical and horizontal, just because I personally like the way horizontal looks on LinkedIn video more than I like the way that vertical looks.
But you'll notice that people who are, especially, doing blogs on LinkedIn, they're shooting a lot of them in a vertical format.
But I even have right here, I have an LED light that I use when I'm shooting content, but for most of it, having good audio, having good lighting, these are just basic tenants of creating content, and making sure that you have a tripod that you can carry with you when you are shooting on mobile. These are just basic that will be helpful for creating content.
Captioning Your LinkedIn Videos
Kathleen: Now what about captions?
Goldie: So I love, love, love captions and I am incredibly guilty of not doing captions recently in my content. And the reason for that is, quite honestly, I do daily content and I don't batch my content, a lot.
So for people who do batch content and say you're releasing one video a week, there is no excuse, there is zero excuse not to have captions on every single piece of content.
Now for me, I will literally shoot something on the way to a meeting, and then upload it 30 minutes later. So for me it's a lot harder to do captions, just because my content production cycle is so quick. But if you have more than 24 hours, you can hire people who either do captioning, or use something like Clips or Google Matic, which does auto captioning as well on the iOS devices.
So there's so many solutions if you're not doing daily content, where you can get captions and yes, I may not do captions frequently, but captions are so helpful.
And if there was a way for me to better do daily captions and still get the adorable filters that I like to put on my videos, I would do that.
But with daily content, it is incredibly difficult. But yes, there are so many captioning services out there, it's a shame not to do captions.
Kathleen: Yeah, there's a massive market opportunity out there for somebody to create a tool that makes it easier to caption.
I will say when I started doing my videos, I've tried, oh my God, I probably tried 10 different approaches to recording, and then I use Rev.com to transcribe my podcasts and I thought, "Oh, I'll just use Rev to create the SRT file for the captions." But then putting it all together was a nightmare.
What I settled on, which is amazing, is you mentioned it, Apple clips. It's unbelievable, it's so easy. I mean, if I can do a video with captions in Apple clips, literally, a four year old could do it.
Goldie: Yeah, Apple Clips and, I personally use Clipomatic when I do do captioning in videos. The only issue, of course, with that is that it only records up to a minute of video caption and then you have to, of course, go back and edit those captions because it misspells-
Kathleen: Yeah.
Goldie: It always misspelled my name.
Kathleen: And it's all one long run on sentence, it doesn't process sentences.
Goldie: And it's one long run on sentence. So it's nice to go back and edit those captions to make sure that they say things properly. But, yes, there are captioning services out there so if you are making videos that are one minute or less, then there is truly no excuse, yeah.
Creating Copy For LinkedIn Video Posts
Kathleen: Now for every video you post, there is accompanying copy that you put in the post itself. And I'm curious if you can talk to, what have you found works really well when you're drafting the copy to go along with a video?
Goldie: I have an entire talk I do on copy on LinkedIn video, which should probably tell you how big of a nerd I am.
Kathleen: That's what I say, I knew I could talk to you forever, but we don't have forever.
Goldie: With copy, I have so many pet peeves with the kind of copy I see accompanying video or even imagery on LinkedIn.
One is the one that I already mentioned, which is the hashtag block. It is not SEO optimized, don't do it, it will only look junkie. So if it's not going to get you the SEO push, there's no reason to do a giant block of hashtags; it's my personal belief.
And the same thing, because I just talked about hashtag block, was tagging 20 irrelevant people in the post. Now I always love being tagged in everyone's post, because I do ... Even though I may not comment, I may not like, I do try to watch as many people's videos as I can; so I'm an exception to the rule.
But for the most part, most people don't want to be tagged in content that's irrelevant and I, myself, don't like being tagged in, say, images that are irrelevant and not original video content, so you have to be really careful about tagging.
And that is something people also put in the copy, is they do half a line, usually misspelled, and then they have 20 people in it. And that, once again, it looks junky, it just looks like it's not very well thought out.
And one of the things I do like to do in my copy is I like to use my personal hashtag, so I use #DailyGoldie.
I have a very distinctive structure for my copy, which you guys might now see kind of propagated across all of LinkedIn; a lot of people now use my structure. I tend to do a title, and then I do a body, and then I maybe put a link or something in there, and then I'll do which did daily number video I'm because I do daily videos and it's nice to know for me, personally, what video number I'm on for that day.
The structure, of course, changes for everyone, but what it is not is, once again, not a giant block of hashtags, it's not me tagging people who are not directly related to that video.
And it is also not, necessarily, a sales funnel. I don't believe in doing every video as a hard sales funnel, in fact, I very rarely do sales in my videos, even my sponsored videos. They happen pretty rarely and infrequently and I think, to me, that's because I like my content to always be of high value.
So even if I'm doing a video that is driving someone towards a sale, that's a high value video that they're getting, so even if they don't want to buy the thing, they're still learning something and I think that is, to me, the most important thing you can do with a video channel on LinkedIn.
Kathleen: Yeah. Now I've noticed you use emojis in your posts, and-
Goldie: Yeah.
Kathleen: I actually really like it. There's a lot of debate around emojis in, general, right now I feel like. For me the way, at least I've seen you use it, it helps visually break up the post.
Goldie: Yeah.
Kathleen: It's almost like you can't, necessarily, do bolding and italics in LinkedIn, but you can bracket things with emojis and set things apart.
Can you talk a little bit about your approach to that?
Using Emojis in LinkedIn Posts
Goldie: Sure. So I think ... Well, let me tell you where not to put emojis; so let's actually start with there, and then we'll go back to where you can use emojis and it does make sense.
So where you should not be using emojis - and I've actually talked to some of the top creators on the platform about, "Don't do this anymore" - s o I'm doing my school teacher finger waving that you can't see.
Don't put emojis in your name on LinkedIn. And the reason for that is, first of all ... And I use a green heart emoji next to my name on other platforms, but on LinkedIn, it looks a little unprofessional; so you want to stay away from that.
But that's not why you shouldn't use an emoji next to your name on LinkedIn, it will actually sometimes break the code.
Kathleen: Yeah.
Goldie: So if someone is trying to tag you on LinkedIn, it can potentially break that code, which is all bad-
Kathleen: Yeah, that's not good.
Goldie: Because then people aren't able to tag you, and you don't get the benefit of being tagged in someone else's post. So that's the main reason I say don't use emojis specifically in your name; regardless of the emoji that you want to use.
Now let's go back to where you can use emojis and it does make sense, which is in your video copy and I use them to, like you said, break up the copy. I like to use them so it gives you a little bit of fresh air, but the emojis are usually relevant to the copy.
I don't like to use a ton of irrelevant emojis, like people who tend to do five or six emojis in a row and it's just a string of emojis that don't necessarily relate at all to that, but it's just a subset of emojis that they always use.
Once again, I think everything should be relevant and a value, so if I'm using an emoji, it will likely be relevant to the content that I'm creating; and that makes it less obnoxious.
Kathleen: Yeah.
Goldie: There's a lot of debate, which you were talking about, that emojis are so obnoxious, they're just so annoying to see, and the way you kind of take that down a notch is making the emojis actually relate to what you're doing and what you're talking about.
So if I'm talking about fishing, and I use a fish emoji, people can't really argue with that because I'm not doing like 12 emojis in a row of palm trees and then a fish. I'm not trying to be a graphic designer with my emojis.
Kathleen: Right, you're not bedazzling your LinkedIn posts.
Goldie: I am not bedazzling, although we grew up in the 90s, you probably like the bedazzling.
Kathleen: Exactly. I don't know, I think it was pretty tacky then and that's one of those trends that does not need to come back, the second time around.
Goldie: I feel like in might just because we're seeing-
Kathleen: Probably.
Goldie: A resurgence in bedazzling, in general.
Kathleen: If gauchos and culottes can come back, then so can bedazzling.
Goldie: Yes.
Kathleen: Yeah, I would agree. I mean I think it's actually, emojis are becoming much more accepted in a business context than they used to be, but it definitely requires a steady hand and some balance.
Goldie: Yes, I think it just requires relevance.
Kathleen: Yeah.
Goldie: So the more relevant an emoji is, the more people can't argue with that emoji use. I mean the same thing is true of, if we want to go down this rabbit hole, of GIFs as well.
Kathleen: Yeah, exactly.
So again I do feel like I could talk to you all day, but you have lots of content to create. And so a couple of questions for you to kind of bring us back home. The first is for somebody who's thinking of getting started with LinkedIn video today, any top piece of advice you would have for them that we haven't already covered as a newbie that they should have in mind?
Goldie: So my number one favorite piece of advice for anyone who's thinking about starting on LinkedIn video is focus. When you are thinking about creating a bucket of content, a bucket of videos on LinkedIn, they should have a singular focus.
And why is this? This makes it easier for people to understand what you're about, what your content is about, and it makes it easier for them to follow you. Because they can decide right off the bat, if they want to watch all your videos on, say, Shopify Plus.
Kathleen: Yeah, that makes sense and everyone who listens to this, in some way shape or form, is a marketer, so it's all about the editorial strategy and-
Goldie: Yes, and it's about editing yourself.
Kathleen: Yes, exactly. Sometimes it's the hardest kind of editing.
Goldie: Yes.
Kathleen's Two Questions
Kathleen: All right, well as my listeners know, I like to ask every guest the same two questions before we wrap up.
The first one is company or individual, who do you think is doing inbound marketing really well right now?
Goldie: Oh my gosh, this is such a lovely question. I recently met with somebody who I think is fantastic and has a great email strategy, and her name is, I'm going to pull it up right now because I really should have pulled it up sooner.
Kathleen: That's all right, I'm catching you off guard.
Goldie: For everyone who is, because I always get her last name wrong, Ann Handley.
Kathleen: Oh, I love Ann.
Goldie: Yeah, Ann is wonderful. We are totally going to buy matching suits and wear them to the next conference, so-
Kathleen: Doesn't she have the best suits?
Goldie: She has the best suits-
Kathleen: Yeah.
Goldie: But she also has incredibly strong email strategy.
So go subscribe to her email strategy, go read her book; she also has a new book out. But I like how friendly, yet professional her outbound content is. And it's this beauti- ... It's just like her suits, which are wild, but professional. And I think that she is such a great example of just a branding. She has incredibly consistent branding both on her person, literally her person, and also on her outgoing emails.
Kathleen: Absolutely.
Goldie: Yeah.
Kathleen: Her suit game is strong, and her newsletter which is, for anyone listening, it's called Total Annarchy, with two N's for her first name, is amazing. It comes out once every other Sunday, I think, is the cadence. Great answer, we love Ann at IMPACT.
Second question is, obviously digital marketing is changing so quickly, how do you personally stay up to date and keep yourself educated?
Goldie: So, I have a few resources that I absolutely love and I absolutely would follow.
One of them is so funny because they interviewed me, and then I got so obsessed with them, because I just love all the content that they're constantly putting out, and that is WeRSM. And they are based in London, but they have footprints all over the US. And they tend to cover a lot of things as they're happening.
So what they're great on is they will release articles, literally, the same day LinkedIn officially announced live, they will do an article that same day. So I love how incredibly up to date and feature focused they are, but for me as a marketer, it's all the kind of content and news that I'm more interested in, the new features that are released that are relevant to my user base and my demographic.
So they're a really slightly unknown, but such a great media outlet for marketers that I think should have a bigger and better presence. Ad they also had a podcast, that was really, really wonderful as well, but I think it's currently on hiatus.
How to Connect With Goldie Chan
Kathleen: I cannot wait to check them out, they sound like a great resource. Now we've already talked about how you can be found on LinkedIn if anybody just types in #DailyGoldie, G-O-L-D-I-E. Any other places people should seek you out online if they want to learn more about you or get in touch?
Goldie: Sure, so you can find me on Twitter @GoldieChan, G-O-L-D-I-E-C-H-A-N or find me on Instagram @GoldieCylon, G-O-L-D-I-E-C-Y-L-O-N, because I am a huge Battlestar Galactica fan. And I've been experimenting a little bit on Instagram, like I said before with IGTV and other kinds of alternative short form content; so Instagram also is fascinating.
Kathleen: And you have to go check her out on Instagram because she has an amazing picture of herself dressed as Khaleesi from Game of Thrones that is on point.
Goldie: Thank you.
You Know What To Do Next...
Kathleen: All right, well if you're listening and you liked what you heard, of course I would love it if you would leave a five star review for the podcast on iTunes. And if you know someone doing kick ass inbound marketing work, tweet me @WorkMommyWork because I would love to interview them.
Kathleen: Thank you so much, Goldie, this was great.
Goldie: Thank you so much for having me.

Note
i've come across your vids and they are so beautiful especially the Niz ones. I just started vidding, can u help me please? (btw i have sony vegas 14 & adobe)
I have Vegas 10 😆. thank you for the kind words! I’ve tried Adobe Premiere years ago for like 1-2 vids and it was good, but I would suggest Vegas if it’s not too overwhelming you since there’s a lot more vidding resources out there for Vegas. On YT, there’s coloring tutorials and coloring .veg files you can download. And also YT tutorials on how to do certain effects.. some might involve getting NewBlueFX, which has extra transitions and effects but if you’re just started out, they’re really not necessary. Also google searching helps out a lot... including site:https://forums.creativecow.net in your google search might be helpful too since that’s a good forum where people discuss how to do things in Vegas. Google searching threads in that forum have answered any technical questions I’ve had.  Honestly... just have fun! Pick a show/character/ship + song you love, and just experiment with matching the scenes w/ the song and lyrics. If you’re worried about a song getting rejected/blocked on youtube, what I do before I start vidding, is that I upload the song with a blank video to test out the song. I do this on an extra/test YT account so that if I do get a block/strike, it doesn’t affect my regular accounts. Sometimes your vid will be blocked/muted months later anyhow, but it’s something you can’t control. If you’re choosing a really popular current song and it gets blocked, you could go for a cover version instead. Have fun & good luck!

Top 5 Favorite Gaming Youtube Channels
I get tons of inspiration from the many youtubers out there who put their life on the line every day making dank content on some of my favorite games so that youtube always feels like some weird version of VH1/Discovery Channel in an alternate reality where content for gamerz is made with the same production-values and care as bigger-budget cable programming and for that I am eternally grateful. Here are a handful of the many youtubers whose content on gaming is an invaluable resource.
1. SuperBunnyHop
Tumblr media
An early-era gamer youtuber classic. His Metal Gear videos are top notch, and I like the wide breadth of his yearly reviews.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N_-jyF987MQ&t=18s - MGS3 review
2. Dark Pixel Gaming- https://www.youtube.com/user/WarialaskyPlays
Consists of three midwestern bros who are understandably obsessed with a little genre known as the JRPG. The big draw for me here is the series done by one of the three guys who run this channel which focuses on these really well-done, well-researched reviews/analyses of all the Final Fantasy games, starting with the very first one and working through the whole series (he's struggling through 13 at the moment on his patreon and on weekly public discussion-videos in preparation for it).
These guys put a pain-staking amount of work into their videos, and while the channel covers content related to a variety of games, I'm chiefly interested in their coverage of Final Fantasy and other legacy JRPGs like Chrono Trigger and Xenogears. Whereas other youtubers are able to inject humor and whimsy into their videos for better or worse, these guys are all business when it comes to anything that isn't their more casual weekly vlog-cast, and that level of detail and effort can be hard to come by. I also really appreciate their level of fan-interaction on their podcast when it comes to crowd-sourcing for topics and discussion points, as well as in the way they get feedback from fans on certain games as they are writing their own reviews. Check it out if you care about JRPGs, especially the 90s golden age of said genre. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1dtgSqEPkco&t=7s (their review of FF7) 3. Somecallmejohnny- https://www.youtube.com/user/SomecallmeJohnny
The biggest draw for me with this guy are his well-written and long-form reviews of each and every Sonic the Hedgehog game, which is an exhaustive effort given the amount and range in quality with those titles. But he's also good for just about any really big fan-favorite franchise like Mario, Zelda, Kingdom Hearts or Metroid. So he's kind of all over the place but no matter what game or genre he's talking about, he exerts the same level of effort and he seems like a generally well-meaning, well-spoken guy whose straight-forward approach is laudable, even if I don't always agree with him necessarily. And there is a little bit of humor here and there, which I generally enjoy and is preferable to other reviewers who are totally dead-pan or ones who go a little too far in that direction. So yeah, definitely check him out if only so that he can play all the Sonic games that exist so you don't have to.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eZ0wdIWKGxI -Sonic Advance trilogy review 4. Scott the Woz- https://www.youtube.com/user/scottthewoz
This guy is all about Nintendo, and it's always nice to have a user devoted to a single developer/company. You can tell he really appreciates and understands the Nintendo ethos, and he has videos on a wide-range of things including series retrospectives, console reviews and miscellaneous stuff like videos on old-school E3 shows or the last games released for every console. So it's either Nintendo stuff or industry retrospectives that get into retro ephemera, but I mostly go to him for Gamecube/Wii nostalgia.
He seems to be a big platform-y guy, and doesn't have that much content on certain big Nintendo franchises like Zelda, which is odd to me personally as a massive Zelda fanboi, but I appreciate his different perspective/values as a Nintendo gamer, and hey they do have a ton of platformers. But he also pays his respects to various Nintendo odd-balls that other people pass over.
Another thing about him is that he's pretty damn funny a lot of the time. He's good at going between sarcasm and unadulterated sincerity which I appreciate, even if every once in a while something doesn't land or resonate with me necessarily, I still respect the hell out of that hustle.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HiBodKbbJy4 (Wii is under-rated) 4. Clemps- https://www.youtube.com/user/MrClemps
This guy seems relatively new in terms of amount of content, but his videos are all really long, detailed looks at super niche-JRPGs like the Yoko Taro games, Dark Cloud and ones that no one's even heard of like this one that Studio Ghibli worked on in the 90s (Jade Cocoon). So yeah he goes deep into the weirder side of my favorite genre, and he's not only well-spoken and niche-oriented but also pretty funny and sports these vaguely threatening rubber gloves as a sort of gimmick that may point to a darker side.
There's a good bit of story summary which I usually end up skipping over, but that's kind of an issue with the majority of game reviewers, and hey, I guess some people really do want to hear a game's plot boiled down like that, and he does have a delightful accent. So yeah, big draw for me are videos on Nier and Nier Automata, FFXV, Odinsphere and Dark Cloud, but if your of a freakier, JRPG-oriented persuasion, then there's bound to be something here for you.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vf9y567Lqg4 - FFXV review 6. Superbutterbunz- https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCKn72wsF89-DxlA1jlq_fUA
Last but for sure not least is Superbutterbuns, who covers an eclectic range of games including deep-level JRPGs like Persona as well as big crowd-pleasers like Overwatch and Dark Souls alongside niche-y, oft-forgotten platformers like Jak and Daxter and Ratchet and Clank. So she's kind of all over the place with a vague focus on JRPGs, but no matter what kind of game shes talking about you can count on her unique sense of humor and a style which has her going between wacky editing and lite-meme-ing to pretty serious and thorough analyses.
I'm not always in the mood for the high level of energy in her vids, but there's always something in every vid that gives me a new perspective. Her diverse taste makes me think of her channel as the most Tumblr-iest of video game youtubers that I follow in a way that I can't quite explain, but something about Ratchet and Clank vids, next to Kingdom Hearts vids next to Overwatch and Dark Souls vids just makes me think  of Tumblr, in a good way. And big ups to her Persona and Catherine vids and the use of Tchaikovsky as background-music.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JZEG3bG_5rY ("yelling about Catherine") Runner-ups/Shout-outs
MetalJesusRocks- Respect this dude's console retrospectives, and mostly hit up his videos when I'm thinking about a whole console and its library, seeing as he has a massive amount of games for every platform being a collector and all. His vids are very collector-oriented which is a cool perspective and I like the diverse cast of guests who he collaborates with.
https://www.youtube.com/user/MetalJesusRocks
ValkrieAuroroa- Awesome taste in deep-level JRPG goodness and has worked with Superbutterbuns and Clemps on a few games including Nier Automata. Well-written videos and great taste? Can't go wrong.
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCDjB4FTYBq2KCh67pGx1D1Q PeanutButterGamer- Not to be confused with Butterbuns, this guy is one of my go-to youtubers for Zelda content, see as he has a crazy amount of it, including very niche-y Zelda content like "top 10 dungeons" or "top 10 items" etc, which get deep into one of my favorite franchises. His sense of humor can sometimes be a little "LOLZ-random" and yet he seems like a good guy, and I respect his vids/writing/editing.
https://www.youtube.com/user/PeanutButterGamer
Mark Brown- This dude has content on a lot of games, but for me his Master Key series is the big draw because it’s one of the only series that I’ve seen which focus specifically on Zelda dungeons, and I'm personally a bit of a Zelda dungeon-freak, so seeing him get deep into analyzing, comparing and like deconstructing Zelda dungeons is freakin’ awesome.
https://www.youtube.com/user/McBacon1337
Cleanprincegaming- Not really sure why I feel the need to include this dude, cuz  I just recently subscribed and I have an issue with like all of his videos, but I feel like he still makes pretty interesting stuff despite all that. They just happen to always be over-produced to shit, overly self-serious and err on the side of being kind of negative generally. I also don't like his voice that much, but there's still something to be had from his videos and one day he could be great, if he like chills out and lightens up. I'm kind of interested in things he does differently like weird b-roll footage mixed in with his reviews, but I don't think a lot of it works, and yet here I am still writing about him. Idk, he's good enough to go in the 10-slot, and you can tell he's ambitious as hell and I feel like I went to public school with him in an alternate dimension.
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCXj7EFAEM6PtQLjjh0wfsSA
And shout-out to Game Grumps for being the most palatable and easy-going but still enjoyable LPers out there. Hat’s off, gentlemen.

The four I’s that maximise investability.
Tumblr media
Read time: 7 min 15 seconds – ish.
Increasingly I believe that entrepreneurship can be taught.
And importantly, learnt.
My blog posts usually focus on the repeat behaviours common to successful entrepreneurs. I work hard to translate those observations into practical actions that anyone can do.
This post is different – it focuses on identifying the key characteristics on which those behaviours of success depend.
There are several traits common to successful entrepreneurs, including (but not limited to): inventiveness; imagination; opportunism; and charisma.
I’ve chosen to focus on the trait that is arguably the most important of all: investability – the ability to raise funding.
Access to finance is commonly the challenge that provokes the most questions; causes the most problems; and seems the hardest to fix.
However, some people are better at securing backing than others. Some people seem to be able to raise more money more quickly than others. And that led me to ask:
What are the most important characteristics that enable great entrepreneurs to land investment when others get stuck?
I’m not talking about the specific actions that they take – for example, what slides they include in their pitch deck. I’m talking about the qualities and attributes that successful entrepreneurs possess that fuel their ability to positively influence investment.
I’ve identified many characteristics common to entrepreneurs that successfully raise finance. I’ve distilled those attributes in order to identify which characteristics I believe to be the most important. I narrowed it to four that to my mind are the most powerfully influential – four that are the most vital.
As an investor, in my view the four characteristics common to the most investable entrepreneurs are:
Initiative
Intuition
Instinct
Inevitability
Bringing each one of those four characteristics to life . . .
Initiative:
A common characteristic belonging to the most investable entrepreneurs is their initiative. Doing what needs to be done before being asked. Combined with correctly choosing the most important thing that needs doing.
Brilliant entrepreneurs are activists, not talkers. They take action. They get investment because they get things done.
When others get stuck, entrepreneurs get stuck-in.
Successful entrepreneurs take the initiative. Which means that they tend to lead rather than wait to react. They are on the front-foot.
The force of entrepreneurial initiative often comes across as a powerful sense of urgency. It can feel as though time is running out. Successful entrepreneurs often appear impatient, intolerant even.
Entrepreneurial initiative is often misread and misinterpreted. Two common misconceptions are:
Fearlessness
And a lack of attention to detail.
In the debate on whether entrepreneurialism is nature or nurture, one persuasive argument that entrepreneurialism can’t be learnt is a belief that (whether male or female) entrepreneurs have “more balls” than the rest of us.
I think that analysis is inaccurate. I do not believe that entrepreneurs are immune to fear. My view is that successful entrepreneurs possess so much initiative that they are compelled to press-on despite their fear.
It is also not true that successful entrepreneurs have no capacity for detail. It is simply that entrepreneurial initiative creates a need for progress that is greater than the capacity to get immersed in detail.
Some of the world’s most famous entrepreneurs are equally famous for their ability to descend into the most microscopic level of detail. However, if you want to engage an entrepreneur in this level of detail, my advice is, pick your moment wisely.
Multiplying your initiative:
To develop the power of your initiative I recommend reading my previous post: The 4 D’s of Exceptional Leaders: Decisive; Definitive; Directive; Declarative.
Intuition:
To my mind, intuition is singularly the most important characteristic vital to entrepreneurial success. Therefore it is equally vital to being investable.
Entrepreneurial intuition is the gift of being able to predict and forecast outcomes accurately based on experience and feeling rather than via conscious reasoning, quantification, validation and analysis.
Intuition is a superpower - it is the commercial equivalent of a subconscious sixth sense.
I am convinced that both the speed and quality of a leader’s decision making is fundamentally enabled by their intuitive intelligence.
The possession of good intuition provides a foundation from which to make good quality decisions, consistently.
Intuition is especially important to start-ups and early stage ventures because these companies simply don’t have the time, resources, capacity or money to indulge in extensive de-risking and analysis. Something that corporates would be wise to learn.
Successful entrepreneurs have to rely-on (and vitally, act-on) what their gut tells them. Brilliant entrepreneurs are hard-wired to tune-in to their gut. They know how to interpret the invaluable messages that their gut tells them. They know how to translate those messages into clear decisive actions. Invariably the right actions.
One thing that I worry about is that not enough is being done to teach kids how to harness the power of their intuition. Intuition is not on the curriculum.
Unlocking the power of your intuition:
Tune-in to your gut. When you feel uncomfortable, don’t ignore it. Decipher what it is telling you. Act on it. Speak it (literally).
Successful entrepreneurs take care to acknowledge and bank their successes in order to build a solid foundation of confidence that enables them to trust their feelings.
Be astutely observational. Hangout with your customers. Really look. Really listen.
Beware that intuitive strength is not an excuse to avoid good governance and due diligence. Know which corners cannot be cut.
Recognise that not everyone will share or trust your intuitive sense. Avoid unnecessary friction; misalignment; being overly assertive. Find more effective ways to communicate and share your intuition. You are an entrepreneur, not the messiah. It is not incumbent on anyone to believe your intuition. It is incumbent on you to persuade them. Even if they are your subordinates.
The collective intuition of a group invariably multiplies the power of the intuition belonging to the individuals in the group.
Instinct:
One thing that investors especially value is pace. Instinct is a vital asset with which to accelerate progress. To accelerate from start-up to scale-up.
It is not simply that brilliant entrepreneurs are receptive and fast to act – it is that often they do so unthinkingly. It is in their nature. And they are not troubled by it. Whereas, people who are lack this instinctive characteristic tend to wrestle with their responses. They need time and space to reflect, to think, to plan.
Good instinct enables super-fast response, and efficient progress. It can enhance productivity which is key to maximising shareholder value.
Igniting your instinct:
Think of instinct as a programmable auto-response. Then realise that you are able to programme how you respond.
Training your instinct is about reducing cognitive drag; reducing the processing time; speeding up the response mechanism. It’s about figuring out how to automate your response subconsciously, and immediately.
Repetition is a highly effective technique to programme (and re-programme) instinctive actions and reactions.
Recognise that natural human responses, like anger, are actually a choice. You can choose to over-ride these reactions and choose more positive responses instead.
Good instinct is not “knee-jerk”.
Inevitability:
I said earlier that intuition is the most important characteristic that underpins entrepreneurial success. However, for me personally, ‘inevitability’ is the most investable characteristic. From my perspective, it is the most compelling.
Allow me to explain.
When entrepreneurs describe their ventures, the most investable ones are not describing a concept, an idea or a fantasy – what they are describing is inevitable. There is no doubt what-so-ever that they will achieve the outcome that they intend.
Their vision is as real and tangible as the computer on which I am writing this blog.
Build your own inevitability:
Be punctual.
Surround yourself with brilliant talent.
Establish an outstanding track-record of proven results.
Anchor your ideas on a foundation of accurate customer insight.
Systematically evidence market appetite.
Focus on distribution/sales.
Be authentic.
Have bankable integrity that people are prepared to vouch for.
Deliver promises.
If you are interested to read about ventures in my personal portfolio that embody these characteristics, then please check-out:
www.howz.com
www.yoti.com
www.wrisk.co  Interestingly, Wrisk are currently raising funding on the crowdfunding platform, Seedrs - here’s a link to a vid’ of me talking about that.
Finally, as I mentioned earlier, these four “I’s” – Initiative, Intuition, Instinct, Inevitability are not the only characteristics that underpin entrepreneurial success. But they are the characteristics that in my opinion maximise investability.
Below is a (not exhaustive) list of some of the other characteristics that I’ve also observed. Entrepreneurs are also often:
Insightful: Good entrepreneurs are acutely observational, and translate insights into opportunities.
Insatiable: Entrepreneurs are restless and relentless. They are unstoppable and not easily satisfied.
Inciters: Entrepreneurs are inciters. They are igniters, protagonists and provocateurs.
Infectious: Entrepreneur’s enthusiasm is contagious.
Influential: Entrepreneurs make people believe.
Intentional: Entrepreneurs are full of purpose. (They are purposeful).
Interventionalist: Entrepreneurs get stuck-in. They get hands-on and take practical steps to progress.
Intrepid: Entrepreneurs are often in command of their own fear.
Ingenious: It’s not the great entrepreneurs are clever, what makes them special is the originality of their inventiveness
