He is family, I never stated otherwise.

Jiang Cheng was recruiting cultivators alone and was already fighting in the Sunshot campaign with his newly rebuilding sect when WWX was 'missing'. WWX's presence boosted recruitment but by no means was it entirely because of WWX that LP got rebuilt. He was drunk half the time and did not help train any of the new recruits after the campaign & was growing very distant.

Jiang Cheng does not know WQ and WN were responsible for half the shit they did because he was unconscious for most of it. Also, returning your parents' dead bodies but doing nothing when they were actively killed and isn't worthy of praise. Like that is the bare minimum. A lot of what you're saying doesn't apply because we the audience know of WQ & WN's motives. We know why WWX did what he did but most of the other characters don't which is why things turned out so horribly in the first place. We are limited to WWX's POV on things & what he knows. So we have to work through that to figure out what the other characters are aware of.

Jiang Cheng, on-page and on-screen has tried to defend WQ & WN. He spoke up saying they were allying themselves with the Sunshot campaign and tried to speak out. But he got firmly shut down by JGS and NMJ. LXC have somewhat lacklustre support. LWJ was present during this meeting but he said nothing.

The people who died in LP were also innocent. I never said JC was totally innocent or brave, nor did I saw WWX was in any way wrong. I made that post to make people consider JC's perspective. I am aware he is morally grey and he was wrong for telling WWX to abandon the Wens.

But JC is fresh out of the destruction of Lotus Pier where he lost everyone. Not just his close family, but every single YMJ member. His duty is to his clan, that is what he will protect. I've stated this to others but The Wen remnants being entirely innocent and made up full of the weak, the old and the young was a thing in the show, not the books. The book states they were all dressed simply and could be mistaken for simple farmers but there were cultivators among them.

None of the great sects messed with WWX and his camp BECAUSE of the staged fight with JC where they had a mutual agreement that WWX was defecting. They didn't have a fight, because there was no active action on any of their parts. It wasn't because the great sects thought WWX could defeat all of them. He wasn't messing with them, so they didn't do anything back.

Lanling Jin initiated the attack, but what news would JC be delivered? That WWX used one of his puppets to kill his brother-in-law. No one knew WWX was losing control, especially not JC. JC was fully under the impression WWX had control over his powers (he asks him that when JYL dies).

If you read the book, it's very obvious there is hierarchy amongst the clans. Like this is a key theme in the story. It's the reason why the Sunshot campaign even happened. The hierarchy went something like: Wen > Jin > Nie > Jiang = Lan with a lot of shuffling throughout the story.

The Jiang sect was at the bottom of the totem pole after the Wens' attack. Like I'm not pulling this out of my ass, there are multiple discussions about how the Jin sect are trying to be the new Wen sect and take hegemony. The reason why WWX was condemned and asked to submit to Jin sect was power play and no one wanted the Jiang sect to have that power. It's not even desirable power because Demonic Cultivation was highly looked down upon due to how it mistreats dead bodies. Politically speaking, the Jiang sect had minimal power against the remaining three sects. WWX's DC and the LP alone could never have taken on the rest of the sects. It's impractical, and frankly wasteful.

All of the sects just emerged from a long, long battle and need rebuilding from the destruction. Insinuating another war is just self-destruction, especially when LP lacks the resources the Wen used to have.

Sticking to just the "black and white" text of MDZS, or any text, is unwise, because there are themes and underlying stories spelled out in the subtext. WWX's narrative is limited third-person, we don't know what they people around him feel.

Idk why you assumed me asking for reader to reframe the way they thought about JC immediately means a) absolving him of all his wrongdoings b) arguing somehow he is fully in the right c)that WWX is somehow in the wrong.

This is not an attack on WWX's decisions or disparaging WQ or WN or anyone really. I am simply asking to look at the story from the POV of another character. Jiang Cheng is morally grey at best, lighter side of grey considering the rest of the cast.

Okay but suppose he DID side with WWX at every turn? Then what?

WWX was eventually going to lose control of his DC. He was going to grievously injure or hurt someone. The mere presence of WN would be a threat because like despite him being a good character, the means of his return are cruel and unnatural to the norms of their society and frankly, immoral in its own way considering the beliefs about reincarnation and the rituals around death in this setting.

The Jin Sect always wanted to take down WWX. If he was in LP, they would've just staged the whole Jin Zixun thing in Yunmeng and launched an attack there instead. The Wen remnants would've died, except now the LP sect members are also dying and Jiang Cheng loses fucking everything. WWX also loses everything here btw. WWX is very aware of what his presence will do in LP. It's why they have that mutually agreed fake fight and defection.

It's not as easy as "JC should've done this" "WWX should've done that". There's no right answer.

Hey have we tried reframing Jiang Cheng not supporting the Wen Remnants as instead Jiang Cheng trying to keep whatever is left of his sect safe? Like the man's first thoughts were not "let's go kill them", that didn't happen until JYL's death. Why is JC the bad guy for wanting to restore his home? WWX and JC mutually split up responsibility on who each of them are going to protect and were bantering like they usually do after like why is JC the bad guy for wanting to protect his family's legacy?

As a physician, Wen Qing has to suffer fools constantly; if Lan WangJi is determined to be Wei WuXian’s baby daddy, she wasn’t going to stop him, especially if it could save them all. And if it leads to some misunderstandings on the topic of marriage and propagation—well, it is not Wen Qing’s fault if Lan WangJi became the world’s best and worst matchmaker, making sure that children everywhere had parents.

My comments: Goodness, this story was a ride: so much happened. Canon takes a hard right when wwx tells lwj that he birthed a-yuan. Since there's NO sex education in Gusu, apparently, lwj just rolls with it, assuming that the forehead ribbon-touching must have impregnated wwx. *Obviously two males can have babies, because the rabbit horde started with two males!* Anyhoo, there's tons of plot wrapped around this running gag of "if you hand a child to someone, they're the ones that birthed them and now you're both fathers, congrats". Lwj wants more kids, so he's very open to just... plucking up orphans. He goes rescuing Wens, almost like a rogue cultivator, because wwx has opened his eyes to a whole new world.

Unfortunately, about halfway through, wwx dies as per canon (mostly), and we'll go through the 13 years with lwj, his 3 children, jc and HIS daughter, jin ling and his living family, and mo xuanyu (who has an arc).

(I was actually in the crossdressing tag when i found this story, and when wwx comes back, he does, completely casually, often dress as a woman, to conceal his identity (there are rumors that Cangse Sanren has come back). Mxy sometimes wears dresses just because he likes them. Everyone's chill about it, it's not really a plot point.)

After wwx comes back, canon is followed a bit more closely, but with many more kids running around. And Nie Mingjue. And an alive Wen Ning (that's a running gag, too, that everyone calls him dead, but he's not).

I really enjoyed this, and the last few chapters are a hoot.

Author has lived in China for the past 8 years, and has extensive notes on language, culture and word choices, from an outsider's point of view, which were really interesting, y'all should be sure to read them.

ok so

as usual after finishing an arc of mdzs my head is full, many thoughts. so let’s talk about the guanyin temple confrontation.

first thing that i kept paying attention to were actually the changes made in order to turn it into live-action. so in cql they had to make the gray-gray characters, the “there are no good or bad guys, just people and their circumstances” characters (unless you’re jgs, than yeah you’re a bad guy and everyone agrees on that actually) into slightly more black and white characters. by the end of cql we are lured into this fake sense of security, “haha, we know who the bad guy is!” (then a year passes and here you are, now a jgy apologist), by the end of mdzs, you just know that, well, decisions were made, unfortunate decisions, by many different people. 

cql had to make wwx into a bit nicer version of himself. the good protagonist couldn’t lose control and accidentally kill a bunch of people, and then kill another bunch of people fully willingly, cause his sister just died and that was the last connection he had to the idea that something still matters in this world. no, out protagonist should be... like a little bit nicer than that. so they lifted some of that responsibility for atrocities off him, but they couldn’t just evaporate it, could they? they had to put it somewhere. they put it on jgy. after all he’s the big bad in the end of the story, well, the only surviving person from all people that could be considered big bads, he’s the one that “did every terrible deed imaginable”. he could take that responsibility, they had to make his grayness into a slightly darker shade anyway.

i am actually kinda surprised by how different my reaction to jgy was in mdzs. obviously, there is a year difference between me watching cql and me reading this part of mdzs, and over that year i changed my opinion on jgy 5 thousand times and joined the camp “actually meng yao deserves all the best things in the world”, but anyway. when i was watching cql i was like, oh my god, can someone just kill him already, before he does something bad again, before more bullcrap comes out of his mouth, and also stop yelling at this kid about all the “valid” reasons to why you killed his dad. in mdzs my reaction to jgy’s confessions was like, “huh. he has a point”.

now don’t get me wrong there, some shitty things were done, but the thing is, the things he did really made sense from his point of view, from this position and life experience he really had no other way to go. i especially was convinced by his reasoning to why he couldn’t cancel his engagement with qin su. not only he would suffer from this story, because he already went through so much to make this marriage possible, but also qin su’s parents and herself would most likely suffer, their public image would be destroyed, only jgs wouldn’t lose anything. and you could feel the hatred and bitterness he felt towards his father talking about this, and everyone in the temple could agree with that, because he “just forgot he made another child”, he didn’t even notice.

another interesting detail for me was lxc saying, “it’s not that i didn’t know that you did some of these things, it’s that i thought you had a good reason for doing them”. so yeah, a reminder, lxc isn’t blind and he isn’t an idiot. he trusted a person he thought he knew better than anyone else, and he believed in this person. the problem, i think, is that “a good reason” is different for lxc and for jgy. lxc would understand a righteous reason, doing something for the greater good. working for wen ruohan? that was explainable. they all were fighting in a war, fighting for the better, brighter future, and meng yao’s contribution to that future was immeasurable. what if he killed some people there? he had a good reason in lxc’s eyes. but meng yao had other good reasons in his life, some of these reasons lxc never had to deal with in his life. survival, for example, is one of them. meng yao’s early years were very different from lxc’s. not to say that lxc’s life was easy, but it was never truly unstable. meng yao had to learn how to survive in a world where no one wanted him. he lived with one dream, promised to him by his mother, a future where he wouldn’t have to suffer anymore, where he wouldn’t have to smile at people he hated, please every one of their desires so they wouldn’t harm him. and then he entered this life promised to him and he still had to survive, but now in a luxurious man-eats-man world of lanling jin.

meng yao’s life really was this unstoppable ball of snow rolling down the mountain, and every decision he made just made the ball bigger and it would just roll faster. there is even a moment where jgy accuses lxc of being naive. lxc isn’t really naive, of course, it was said in the heat of the moment, but it is a fact that lxc was never kicked down a staircase, never had to crawl back up, and the thing is, at the bottom of the staircase, there are other good reasons to do things.

and in a way lxc understood that jgy in his position really didn’t have any other choices, he just couldn’t find peace in this mindset. he kept repeated through that part, “and yet, and yet, you shouldn’t have done that, you should have...” and he never said what exactly jgy should have done. because lxc doesn’t know. jgy doesn’t know. no one knows. what choices were better? how could he fix all that and still survive? in a way, lxc saying that reminded me of wangxian farewell in the burial mounds. when lwj asks, “you really indent to keep going like this?” and wwx, who wished, who longed for another solution, for some way out, asked him, “what else can i do? what method can i choose to resolve this, not use this technique and still protect people i want to protect?” and lwj didn’t have an answer. lxc didn’t have an answer either.

another amazing thing about guanyin temple confrontation, is that it’s very heavily wwx’s pov. most on the novel is his pov of course, but there were a loot of his thoughts in this arc. and he was rather understanding towards jgy. not in a way “i agree with every reasoning behind every decision you made” but in a way “i understand that you had your reasons, but all of them will become irrelevant really soon, they already are, because the crowd will only remember you as a son of a whore who did every terrible deed imaginable, and all the good deeds will be forgotten” 

now his thoughts on nhs, or who he suspected nhs to be, were way less nice. especially compared to live action, nhs didn’t make such an impression on me as he made through wwx’s thought process in the end of guanyin temple arc. of course, wwx is no sect leader yao, he is not the one to jump to conclusions, he just noticed that if you put some facts together, they actually start making a lot of sense, and formed a full picture. but he didn’t have any proof, so he kept it mostly to himself. yet he still thought for a moment about nhs as someone who didn’t care about collateral damage that much, who was ready to sacrifice lives of juniors, sect leaders, anyone, if it would add to jgy’s kill count and make his fall and destruction even more disastrous. not that those are not the things that happened in live action, but you know, when wwx put it all together like that in one paragraph, i really felt it. like, oof, dude it’s ROUGH. and not even jgy’s death was enough, as nhs basically admitted to stealing meng shi’s body and planning to repay jgy for what he did to nmj’s body. yikes

i mean i still support nhs in everything he does, but yikes

also side note, glad that the dead cats situation finally became clear for me. this whole year i was so confused about who left all these dead cats for juniors to find. i thought maybe xue yang did?? to lure wwx?? so apparently it was also nhs. good to know.

another detail, probably the last one my brain can generate for now, that pained me a great deal was my poor child jin ling. i already cried about some things related to him and this arc, but there was another little one in the very end here, after jgy died. jin ling realised, that there were now three people, wwx, wn and jgy, his little uncle, that were responsible for his parents’ death. people he had every right and reason to hate. all three of them. and yet he couldn’t hate any of them. he couldn’t avenge his parents, that died so long ago he couldn’t remember them, because all three people responsible for what happened, had something, some reasons, some circumstances, that made them really not the bad guys in jin ling’s life. and they all cared about him, protected him. how could he hate them? how could he not? and in this way this poor child repeats, unfortunately, his uncle’s curse. to have someone he wants to hate so much but just simply can’t. it warms my heart at least that jin ling has a much better support system than jc had when he had to live through that experience. so there is hope.

I can't say that there's much about CQL that I care too much for, but 1 thing that I really like is (it's been a while since I watched it so my memory might be foggy) the scene where LWJ is kneeling in the snow holding the cane after his visit to Yiling. It implies that LWJ did say something in WWX and the remnants favor and was punished for it. Either as a warning in a "this is what will happen if you stray again" or they were actively deciding whether to physically punish him as he knelt outside. It would also make some sort of sense on why he didn't seek WWX out anytime after the Yiling visit if he was on a tighter leash. I like using this in my fics when dealing with the time between his visit and the 1 month celebration.

This blank space in LWJs story is both fun and frustrating. Fun cause a fic writer can do so much here writing from his pov. Frustrating cause like bro... What were you doing whilst the love of your life was raising a child on Haunted Corpse Mountain? He specifically sought out WWX 3 times after the SSC and eventually committed treason for him, even if the last one was more impulsive IMO this scenario seems in line with what LWJ would do and start him on the path of questioning things he had taken for granted as true

I guess? But also I’m... not sure I actually like it. See, it kind of gives this sense that LWJ is being punished for associating with WWX. Like, that is pushed so hard in CQL, “Do not associate with evil” and all that. But that’s not the vibe I got from the novel. LWJ was punished for his actions in relation to WWX, yes, and LXC and LQR both blame WWX for “corrupting” LWJ, but I never got the sense that LWJ was being punished for caring about WWX. He was punished for attacking his elders, not because he attacked them for WWX. And that feels important to me? Like, LWJ’s family doesn’t approve of his relationship with WWX but they accept it and don’t punish him for it. I don’t know, maybe I’m just being queer, but a gay man in a society that is explicitly homophobic never getting punished for his love for and later relationship with another man even when he’s punished for the (genuinely and understandably Very Much Not Allowed) things he does because of those feelings feels important. LWJ gets punished, but not because he’s in love with WWX; it’s because his love for WWX leads him to commit treason. WWX is blamed for that, but he’s not actually the reason LWJ is being punished. Meanwhile in CQL... yeah, LWJ is very much being punished for his association with WWX, especially if you’re right and in the scene with the cane he’s being punished for arguing in WWX’s defence. I got the sense that the reason why any attempt LWJ made to argue for WWX and the Wens never comes up is because the Lans kept it quiet because LWJ would be in deep shit if it came out that he’d tried to protect the Yiling Patriarch. No one knows that LWJ was whipped for fighting his own elders to protect WWX (or even that he was whipped at all, as far as I remember) because again, the Lans protected him. There were consequences, but the Lan sect very much did close ranks around him and defend him from what would happen if the sects found out that he was in love with and had tried to help the Yiling Patriarch. Again, maybe this is me being queer, but the idea of a group punishing a member of that group for their actual wrongdoings but also not letting them be punished by an unfair and bigoted world for something they did out of love and that didn’t do any serious or lasting harm (sect leader’s brother or no, if LWJ had done serious and/or permanent damage to the elders he would’ve been in even deeper shit than he was) feels really really important. So CQL changing that and making it clear that LWJ is being punished for his feelings for WWX with the repeated “Do not associate with evil” line and if I remember right removing the fight with the elders from the story... in a version of the story that censors the gay relationship and makes it just Straight With Subtext... well, I do not like that. To make it a little more blatant, I’m pretty sure the “Do not associate with evil” rule only appears in CQL. It may exist in MDZS, but it never comes up.

The blank space in LWJ’s timeline between visits to the Burial Mounds is interesting, and there’s a lot you can do with it, but... making it so that the Lan sect, the sect that defended him from the consequences the other sects would make him face for being in love with WWX and helped raise WWX and LWJ’s kinda-sorta son and sheltered WWX when LWJ brought him back to the Cloud Recesses (even if most of them didn’t know about those two things) and accepted LWJ’s marriage even though they really didn’t like WWX, kept him from helping the Wens and punished him for trying to defend the man he loved isn’t exactly how I’d do it. Especially since there isn’t actually anything suggesting that LWJ was punished for going to Yiling in the book, mostly because... well, why would he be, there’s no rule against it and no mention of him being ordered to stay away from Yiling or WWX, and there’s no word about a rule against trying to defend someone from accusations (except the rule against lying, which the Lans know him well enough to know he wouldn’t do; at worst they’ll assume that he’s letting WWX lie to him and letting himself be convinced that the Evil Yiling Patriarch isn’t actually evil). At this point LWJ has done nothing worthy of punishment. LWJ doesn’t have to be punished for being in love with WWX to start questioning what he was raised to believe, he starts questioning what he was raised to believe because WWX dies! LWJ loves him and believes in his moral compass and he dies anyway! Righteousness alone isn’t enough, because WWX was one of the most righteous people LWJ knew and the sects killed him! So actually, making it so that he reconsiders what he’s learned when it negatively affects him instead of because he tried every rule-abiding method he could think of to help WWX and it did nothing actually weakens his character a bit. By the time he’s committing treason for WWX he’s started to change; he’s given up on following the rules and is willing to do whatever it takes to save the person he loves, and even then it’s not enough. That’s what changes him, not his punishment. It’s the realisation that the sects are not righteous, at least not when acting as a collective with mob mentality in full swing. Every individual Lan we meet is righteous! But only as individuals. As a group they’re just as bad as everyone else.

...This is getting away from me a bit. I guess what I’m trying to say is that while I see your point I think the scene where LWJ is punished with having to hold that cane up is just another aspect of CQL shifting from LWJ being punished for going against his sect’s rules to LWJ getting punished for his feelings for WWX, which wouldn’t be a good look even without the censoring of any aspect that was explicitly gay, so I find it hard to look at it in any sort of positive way. 

Also, it’s not as fun as handstands.

MDZS JGY fic promt

I’m thinking about Meng Yao/Jin Guangyao and I think I would love to read a fic of him snapping in the opposite direction of his desperate grab for power and respect from his shit father. We know, thanks to JGS gruesome murder that at some point, after already being a shitty human doing murdery things, JGY snapped hard and said: “if i’m gonna do the shitty things of running this sect i’ll do them for myself and fuck you to death”. Quite literally. 

So I’d like to imagine a world where he, like, not necessary becomes a much better person; I dunno about the JZX and WWX kill plot, or about NMJ. I think he’s very set in his auto-preservating self-beneficing ways, and if you don’t really work well with that part of his chara then he’s not JGY anymore. 

But instead of being, I’ll become the highest in the cultivation world, so i will be finally respected and listened to (uhm, didnt’ work especially well did it? they never let him forget his mother profession when it was his father who was the absolute worst) he decides that while cultivation is still something to aspire to -can’t forget about his mother dying dream, also longer life and health benefits + being a hero, doing the decent thing- he realises the cultivation sect system as it is horrible. 

He was in the middle of the war, he saw it from both sides. He then went to low to high but still a servant. And it’s always blood what counts. He sees what happens to his other bastard brothers, to WWX when he decides enough is enough, and how he himself is still treated by his Sect despite his intelligence and abilities. And instead of trying to take refuge in the system, he is a bit more self-aware or inquiring; maybe he is more idealistic in some ways? But still oh so bitter, and decides to destroy the system from within.

You know what? Do it so he still rises to Leader of the Jin Sect (without prostitutes murdering and necrophilia; he is now more on the side of the common, so maybe he gets the help of Sisi or someone he knows to aid him poison his father and after he gets them a nice reward and packs them to a new life in Japan or something. Or he simply uses another subtle method without intermediaries or with unaware ones, he is certainly able of doing that when he isnt being an ironic murderer shit.) because it’ll serve him, and to be the leader responsible of making sure the so estimated Jin blood is disposesed will make him smug pleased. To slowly gain power and bit by bit erase the division between the noble clans and people who learn simply bcs of talent, scouting youngsters witht the excuse of replenishing the clans after the war and quiting the idiots nobles from their spoiled positions. 

Hell you can even make LXC and NMJ (did he died before or after JGY becomes Sect Leader? Well if he is still alive, NHS doesn’t destroy him, but then WWX doesn’t come back. If he dies before, then the vengeance is still in play, but it’ll be even more fraughted bcs now JGY goals and methods are a lot more morally grey and watching WWX and LWJ confront that would be super interesting O-O), you can make them see those policies and be like, oh sure, that’s a good thing you’re doing A-yao. But also conflict with their positions in the nobility system, as time pases and JGY subtly passes more changes and brings to ruin those sect leaders more entrenched in the old ways and abusing of their people.

 Programs for literacy, for the spread of knowledge and the civil use of cultivation techniques with the excuse of avoiding beforehand the formation of ghosts and resentment appealing to the lazy nature of the rich while eliminating bit by bit the necessity of their existence, like boiling a frog, the creation of the watchtowers still fits nicely and we know in canon he faced oppposition there so here it’s more important still, even more so Su She I think, will be elated with this turn of events and even more loyal lmao if JGY sells it well and JGY sells his ideas really well. 

Maybe he helps XXC and SL bcs it’s in his interest they find success although he finds them naive; but JGY has a canon soft spot for people who treat him well regardless of his common born status, so. Maybe he intercedes with XY and convinces him to work with him taking out nobles reasonably (I bet XY will like that), and manages to avoid somehow XY elaborated revenge on SL and XXC? or executes him when he is too much of a wild card, but we know how that ended in canon... The best bet is making XY see on his own best interest to help in JGY vision but that’s well. almost crack fic lmao. 

OH! Maybe he finds XY before the massacre of the Chang clan bcs he is searching for someone to help him above table and gets to him by offering a more subtle but still suitable appropriate revenge with the pro bonus of getting to do the same to others after and access to WWX manuscripts. You know this has a much higher chance of working, let’s go with this scenario. So he keeps XY out of his father reach, when he is searching for someone to gain control of the stygian seal and wen ning. Yeah, this will appeal immensely to JGY xD

You know, and JGY being beloved by the people, and having more than a facade of being just or fair, but proving it although it isn't in the interest of the nobles. And as he is politics savvy, although with more effort he could certainly make it so he avoids assassinations or walking in a minefield like wwx etc. 

Depending on the NMJ situation... You could make it so NMJ doesn’t die and then they enter a stalemate of grudging respect bcs JGY wants more an ally in swaying people for his cause than his revenge, although he sure could make non lethal things to inconvenience NMJ lol. And NHS as sect leader wouldn’t have the same power to his decisions and reach, no matter if he is more manipulable; after all isn’t NHS a pampered noble in JGY eyes? Who could be sure if he even would follow JGY anyways... 

And you could give it different endings depending on the development of JGY: a success where he gets to the point were factually the sects aren’t bloods based anymore, just a few like the lan (those traditionalists lol) resisting an unavoidable wave of change taht comes for everybody, and the money doesn’t flow in their pockets like a river to the ocean but instead it goes back to the people. 

You could make it so it’s a partial success bcs JGY is still himself and does more than a few morally grey things that come to light with the NMJ murder reveal, but his changes linger and the common people plus others of the same ideal now trained and in process of being cultivators won’t let themselves be cowered by the awful nobility -another big conflict breeding, and maybe it won’t be successful but people have long memories and books and the new ideals of equality would spread regardless, so it would start again and again each time a bit better-. I think WWX POV in this case would be delicious omg, LXC conflict even more pointed. This would be, I think the more realistic and interesting to write take on the idea. Iand you now, I’m in favor of a novel setting and characterization, but to make it more painful, use the 16 gap of the show and nothing else (i haven’t see the show beyond the first episodes bcs i couldn’t take it lol)  so JGY has more time to make changes. 

You could make a downer ending (this I wouldn’t like lmao, but it’s there) so that shows the cruelty and inability of making changes to something so integrated and supported by itself, that JGY loses much to his revenge he takes more and more radical actions that come back to bit his ass with NMJ and JGS murder revelation. I think XY in here would be appropriate, in an antagonist role as in MDZS. But it still has an impact; JGY’s life, despite his faults was still more inspirational, made better impact than his canon self. Make it poetically tragic and a comment on the futility of trying to change society by oneself, but find beauty in the attempt itself which has created community, which will in the future do the true work of overthrowing the yokes of the high ups, educating and helping each other in their messy human lives.

All this ending, and JL conflict, who at this point has learnt much at his uncle JGY side, who has decided to (dunno about marrying QS and A-Song’s death. depending on your take and ending it’ll have different impact) go on with his labor bc he sees the good on it and swears to not be like the worst of JGY. A legacy he can reconcile with himself thanks too, to the experience of meeting WWX. JL is in a more fraught position with JC in this verse, I think, bc for one, he is more mature/not so spoiled and that would make JC glad, but his ideas are at the same time understable and anatema to JC who puts so much of his life on honoring the clan on making sure the Jiang carry on and his name isn’t forgotten but who recruited from nothing during the war. Who sees the danger in alienating the powers of the cultivation sects bc he saw what it did to WWX and he believes in protecting his own and to hell with the rest. 

So very interesting!!! 

You could spin so many takes from this, it’d be so fascinating and satisfying. I’d love to see the chara of JGY developed in this direction, bcs he has so much potential to waste it in so petty goals. His ambition is certainly big enough to believe he will damn well do a silent revolution well. 

Just, using the classics to argue for equality and education and a good life even if you’re a peasant, using the cultivation basis and its suppose use to better oneself and the world in making a point of avoiding wars and violent retribution (to the public, he’s still a bit of an hypocrit bcs it serves him well to have a stick with which to beat his enemies lmao) and instead use diplomacy and a sort of rehabilitation or service thing. Because those ideas are there, in the different clasics and schools of thought (not confucianism, not as much) it’s just that the nobles and high scholars were never interested and used them to argue for a sort of natural hierarchy were they’re in top. 

 Let JGY create a new school of thought, and LXC and others seeing the merit on it. JGY has the reach and the intelligence and the ability. 

The best revenge is living well and destroying the system which allowed the other to harm you, the ideas, the means. Create a fantasy fulfillment ^^

I’m listening to my wangxian playlist (and procrastinating on watching a documentary for my cultural anthropology class) and having lots of feelings about it so have some rambling about some of my favorite songs (this is gonna be long so most of it is going under a cut):

Without You by Ursine Vulpine, Annaca I think is like perfect for the 16 (13 if we’re going with book) years when wwx was dead. beginning of the song puts me in mind of the end of the bloodbath at nightless city when wwx dies and then his grief in the aftermath of it (this is like my absolute favorite song for them rn I mean the lyrics “can you hear my cry / and oh lullaby / drifting through the sky” definitely makes me think of lwj playing inquiry looking for wwx and the ending lyrics are so good omg: “I don’t wanna live a life without you / I will watch the world burn without you” the whole song is incredible though seriously)

My Medea by Vienna Teng, in addition to being one of favorite songs in general, I think is a great song for wwx, probably during the burial mounds era? “no haven for this heart / no shelter for this child in mazes lost / heaven keep us apart / a curse for every mile of ocean crossed / for I must die for what I’ve done / a twist of fate a desert sun / for I see what I destroy” just gets me every time I listen to it

Tightrope from The Greatest Showman I think is fantastic from lwj’s perspective I mean like the LYRICS “hand in my hand and we promise to never let go / we’re walking a tightrope / high in the sky we can see the whole world down below / we’re walking a tightrope / never sure never know how far we could fall / but it’s all an adventure that comes with a breathtaking view”. it kind of puts me in mind of the single log bridge line

And So My Heart Became a Void by Ursine Vulpine, Annaca is another good tragic one imo, more from wwx’s pov. “oh my love what have I done / there’s nowhere left for us to run / and I was standing in the sunlight / and I can’t bear the sight of you / oh my lover what’s on your mind / you’re caught between two ways of life” just. ugh. I love it

Labyrinthine Heart by Sleepthief (feat. Jody Quine) I think really captures their relationship pre wwx’s death when there are so many obstacles keeping them apart “It’s the loving way / that you say my name all the time / I can feel / night with you by my side / but will darkness release me / I hear you cry / locked away in your cage / and I want to try but I’m caught / in this maze of design” also “through the corridor / yours forever more and you’re mine / I can see / daylight with you by my side / and no walls to enclose me” god at this rate I’m gonna quote the whole song lmao I can’t help it it’s all just so beautiful!

Us vs Them (The City Will End Tonight) by Denmark + Winter is really good post resurrection imo. “it’s us against the world / I won’t let you down” like enough said right? I mean it’s LITERALLY lwj and wwx against the entire cultivation world at one point!

Lovers Death by Ursine Vulpine, Annaca is actually one I go back and forth on a bit because I’m not 100% sure the chorus fits but the VERSES ARE SO GOOD “I’ve seen what love looks like / I’ve seen it’s beauty when it’s alive / I was roaming in it’s paradise / it’s gold it’s blue it’s in the skies / but I am a witness to love’s death / there’s no blood there’s no body there’s nothing left / oh my darling don’t you ever forget I wasn’t prepared for the end” again I think it works really well for nightless city when wwx dies. and listen I will freely admit that I’ve like imagined that whole scene while listening to that song and it is so. fricken. tragic. it just. it just ups the tragedy factor of wwx’s death by a million

Rewrite The Stars from The Greatest Showman with lwj as zac efron and wwx as zendaya. like the thing I love about the live action that puts it at the top for me in terms of favorite adaptation is the whole star crossed lovers thing it has going on between wwx and lwj in wwx’s first life which rewrite the stars captures so well. it specifically puts me in mind of the time during the sunshot campaign up to wwx defecting after the phoenix mountain hunt with lwj trying so hard to help wwx and be there for him even though he doesn’t understand the whole situation (because wwx doesn’t TELL him) and wwx wanting lwj there but also not wanting to hurt him and like lqr doing his best to keep them apart and I could keep going

Carry You by Ruelle and Fleurie is a beautiful somewhat tragic somewhat hopeful love song from lwj to wwx post resurrection imo. “you are not alone / I’ve been here the whole time singing you a song / I will carry you” is the chorus and just UGH lwj always being there to catch wwx when he falls, refusing to leave his side even when it means turning against everything he’s ever known, like I just think it really captures the steadfast devotion he shows wwx, the sheer depths of his love

Closer by Mike Perry, Sonic Avenue, Hot Shade (Feat. Mikayla) is another song that I think captures the pining of their relationship during wwx’s first life, post war. “can we go back to that summer / when we just had each other / I still hear the song in my heart” puts me in mind of reminiscing about their days in cloud recesses, simpler happier times when they didn’t feel like they had the weight of the world on their shoulders. the whole song gives me a bittersweet, longing feeling like I picture wwx lying awake at night in the burial mounds thinking back on those days and trying not to become overwhelmed with longing

Never Look Away by Vienna Teng is another good one. “Let me uncover the silver in your dark hair / the weight of your bones / I want to witness the beauty of your repair / the shape you’ve grown / for you are made of nebulas and novas and night sky / you’re made of memories you bury or live by” I tend to think of it being from lwj to wwx but it also works the other way imo as well but like these LYRICS GUYS “so if you’re out there in the cold / I’ll cover you in moonlight / if you’re a stranger to your soul / I’ll bring you to your birthright / I want the storm inside you awoken now / I want your warm bright eyes / to come back to me / and hold on to me / you know that I won’t lie”

Lan Wangji, Sir, I’m Sorry

So, today my friend ranted about the changes in NCT Dream and how she feared that SM Entertainment might end up letting go of her favorite Chinese member to the Chinese management forever. It leads to us talking about weird marketing directions and the resulting alienation of the non-Chinese fans. 

In the middle of that conversation, I found myself coming back to that time when I criticized the danmei’s characterization of Lan Wangji and his romantic plot with WWX up to chp. 59. Needless to say, the reactions I got were rather…..curious to say the least (more on that later). 

After that painful trip down the memory lane, I decided to sit down and put into words what was it that made me stray away from Lan Wangji as a character and eventually the MDZS fandom as a whole. Now after some thought and seeing the matter through new perspectives, I’m ready to put this case to rest.

After some time away from the fandom, I began to watch the first season of the donghua, which, surprisingly endeared me to Lan Wangji’s character. It shows that, on his own, Lan Wangji actually has the potential to be a solid, complex, and relatable character (which, in my opinon, was in no small part thanks to the animation team, the show’s writers, and his outstanding voice actor). Therefore, I conclude that my troubled impression of Lan Wangji of the novels may have stemmed from factors related to the writing style (since the POV is exclusively Wang Wuxian’s) and other stuff lost in translation (although Exiled Rebels Scans’ translation was nothing but excellent), and me just being more interested in Wei Wuxian’s platonic relationships with other characters.

In any case, I understand that other fans find Lan Wangji (in any incarnation) an appealing character and a good romantic lead for Wei Wuxian. I respect their opinions because everybody deserves to be part of the fandom despite having different opinions.

But marketing-approved fandoms are where opinions and healthy discussions go to die. Especially if the producers or creators make demographic-pandering decisions that alienate portions of their fanbase. Especially if said creators micromanage what their own fans can and cannot produce (even ships, apparently). 

And everything is made worse when the majority endorses their behavior and overtakes nearly the entire fandom by driving away other camps that voice objections to those decisions. Meanwhile, the creators continue to shower fans with loads of fanservice dedicated to the remaining demographic. What results is a symbiosis that not only alienates part of their audience but also ensures that newcomers from different demographics will never feel comfortable within the fandom.

That, my friends, is my impression of the MDZS fandom —now entirely converted to WangXian hell. And my plunge into the SVSS fandom further confirms that.

You see, I’ve been following SVSS fan artists on Instagram and while they do make MDZS art once in a while, I never follow artists or artwork-stealing fan accounts that exclusively post MDZS content. Still, this doesn’t keep Instagram algorithms from flooding my explore tab with WangXian pictures and nothing else, aside from the occasional Jiang Cheng or Jing Lin fanart. Thankfully, the whole thing died down a bit once the donghua’s second season and The Untamed drama came out  (not gonna lie, I’m thankful for C-Drama and x nine fans suddenly getting involved in the fandom and making Xiao Zhan and Wang Yibo content).

Last year, out of curiosity, I looked around Youtube for MDZS video essays and came back empty-handed. While there are plenty of review videos, the most views they can get is at 95K. Needless to say, I don’t recall ever seeing big-name reviewers specializing in animated series (Gigguk, Mother’s Basement, Saberspark, etc.) pick up the donghua.  Which in my opinion is baffling since it made quite a scene among the Japanese BL fandom. And then I realized something.

To sum up what I feel about the MDZS donghua’s marketing as a foreigner: it’s a BL work made for MXTX’s loyal fujo fanbase. Not the Chinese-speaking or BL fans, mind you, just MXTX’s fujo fanbase.

The post I made (which mostly addressed my problems with LWJ’s characterization up to chapter 59) led to an interesting exchange with a Vietnamese fan who attempted to refute my opinions but couldn’t because of potential spoilers. I should probably chalk it up to the misfortune of reading slow-burn romance novels (which MDZS supposedly is) with untranslated chapters, but all direct responses to my post were all from people who share the same ideas, among them a fan who has read the novel from start to finish. 

To date, no one has ever approached me directly via DMs or reblogs in the defense of Lan Wang Ji’s characterization. It could be that my post is just too irrelevant to warrant replies or reblogs by other fans, but it sure didn’t stop people from making passive-aggressive posts that in no way address the points made by me or other LWJ critics directly.  

See, this is where the author-endorsed hive mind mentality rears its ugly head. As someone who didn’t immediately buy Lan Wangji’s setup as the romantic lead found it baffling at how quickly the English-speaking fans embraced him as the perfect Seme without question. It doesn’t help that we get bombarded by promotional pictures that fans quickly translate as Wangxian fanservice.

To be fair, the English fandom is directly influenced by English and Vietnamese speaking fandoms and the official materials they translate. However, I can’t accuse them of deliberately concealing information and refusing to translate promotional materials unrelated to Wangxian, because there are little to none, apparently. Which brings us to the bigger problem at hand.

Now, I don’t know if the donghua on its own has exploded outside of Weibo or Twitter (do tell me if you know), but it certainly doesn’t circulate well enough to be picked up by foreign audiences with no prior interest in BL, which is strange because the Donghua itself doesn’t contain the same amount of homoerotic elements, unlike the novels. It could be that Tencent is trying to protect its reputation to avoid association with a novel that is sure to put them in trouble with the Chinese government. 

But why wouldn’t it garner a cult following outside of China, especially with more and more people embracing same-sex relationships in media regardless of whether or not they’re hardcore BL fans? While I understand that Western fans may have trouble accepting some aspects of MXTX’s depiction of same-sex relationships, I think that everyone can still have a good time and make great content together while respecting each person’s preferences and values—

Oh. 

Well, my friend, to quote Anita Sarkeesian:

In case you mistake me didn’t get my point, the problem is not about the acceptability of MXTX’s depiction of her couples by Western fans, it’s her fans (Western, Eastern, what have you) that’s censoring discussions brought up by other fans and then deeming said fans unfit to stay in the fandom. 

Funnily enough, people in the SVSS fandom do frequently point out things they don’t like with the main pairing or the characters themselves without facing repercussions from fellow SVSS fans. I also never hear anything about TGCF fans being banned from shipping non-canon pairings. CMIIW though.

So, to sum things up, I find the MDZS fandom uncomfortable due to MXTX and her fans acting like inquisitors whenever somebody critiques her work or simply pointing out things they simply don’t sit well with.  

Cry all you want about me not being able to comprehend MXTX Chinese values and writing style, but I’ll have you know that I’m part of the SVSS fandom where everybody acknowledges that some parts aren’t for everyone due to language barriers and cultural dissonance and that’s FINE.

Alright, enough procrastination, time to review the next installment of Sunny’s “kill JC, kill Sapph” AU.

Sunshine, let me tell you, I’ve been dragging my feet about reviewing this (currently) last part of your AU because JFM in general, but especially here, makes me want to commit murder. Then, I decided to reread your tags in preparation to immersing myself in his POV, and these lines, especially the last one, gave me the energy to do this because it really all comes down to it.

JFM's inability to admit wrongdoing makes me absolutely insane. The way he genuinely sees himself as only a victim of his wife’s character and never a participant in his own family's dynamics and individual lives... The fact that he never recognizes that inaction is a choice and has as many repercussions as YZY’s acts and words! The absolute absurdity of his lack of- I can’t say grief, he is grieving, even if the process is so absolutely wack not even he recognizes it as grief,- maybe the word is connection? Anyway, the point is, he’s feeling empty, not because a sudden lack of something that used to be so full (that’s WWX), but because there’s something small missing in a way that cannot be ignored mainly because he knows it’s missing, rather than because he feels it missing. And the worst part? HE DOESN’T RECOGNIZE HOW ABSOLUTELY NOT RIGHT THAT IS. HE IS AWARE THAT HE’S NOT GRIEVING LIKE EVERYONE ELSE AND DOES NOT SEE THAT MAYBE, PERHAPS, THAT’S A SIGN THAT HIS RELATIONSHIP WITH JC WAS NOT OKAY, THAT A NORMAL FATHER WOULD FEEL GRIEF IN A WAY THAT FEELS LIKE GRIEF WHEN THEIR SON DIES. HOW THE FUCK DOES THIS MAN NOT SEE THAT SOMETHING WENT WRONG BETWEEN JC AND HIMSELF, AND THAT HE HAD TO HAVE SOMETHING TO DO WITH IT BY THE MERE FACT THAT THEIR RELATIONSHIP DEPENDS ON THE BOTH OF THEM? HOW?!?! *SCREAMS*

DO I MENTION THE FACT THAT HE USES THE WORD “PATHETICALLY” TO DESCRIBE JC’S DEATH? I WANT TO MENTION THE FACT THAT THIS ABSOLUTE PIECE OF SHIT “FATHER” WOULD DESCRIBE HIS SON’S PASSING NOT AS A TRAGEDY, NOT AS A HORROR, BUT AS A FAILURE, AS A DISGRACE. I cannot even say that it’s crazy, this is not lunacy, it would be an insult to any and every mentally ill person to say so, they can feel pain and sadness and heartbreak when someone close to them dies, JFM does not, and he’s the real monster, because once again, this should absolutely have clued him in on the fact that, hey, maybe something is off here, but I already exploded about that once, so I shall be a good girl and not do it again, no matter how much this bastard deserves it.

Rounding back to your tags, I am, as must be already obvious, absolutely fucking appalled at JFM’s clear conscience regarding JC’s illness. The man does this like no one else. No other member of the family is deluded enough to believe they had no hand in JC’s silence (and therefore his death), they all recognize that it was on them to figure it out if JC didn’t tell them, except JFM. He’s so insistent on his own innocence, that he shifts the blame on to JC. That, the whole “I am incapable of doing wrong, therefore everything bad was done by others and I am merely their victim” that has going with YZY and JC in canon, that here literally presents itself as victim blaming JC for his own death... That’s what makes me want to tear him to peaces with my bare hands.

If that wasn’t enough, this chapter also presents another part of JFM’s character that I abhor: his WWX vision. I can’t feel anything but disgust at JFM. It’s not just him mistaking which brother LWJ was closest to. That, I could forgive. But going as far as thinking it odd? (And here the word matters a lot, because the feeling of the whole narration is not just surprise, but confusion, rejection almost, at the notion.) Showing disbelief at JC forming a tighter friendship with someone than WWX? Worse, ending the thought with a dismissal of it all because “What his son was like doesn’t matter anymore”? There are no words for this level of repulsion I am currently feeling, especially because it goes beyond this. The man takes a moment to think of his dead son, and the only qualities about him that he can recall are all negative. And this is all related to the WWX vision because it’s evidence of how JFM- I'm missing the right word here, so bear with the bad alternatives- glorifies? exalts? WWX, and because of that JC, who is so different, always falls short in comparison, even when he really shouldn’t. (Look at how JFM says JC is quick to start fights, as if WWX wasn’t the one that canonically goes around pissing off everyone! But WWX is perfect, so he is just honest, and it’s JC with his sharp tongue that causes fights; never mind that young JC continually attempted to avoid trouble when he knew things were above what he could handle.) This bit is what makes me think JFM (in this AU at least) has a problem not just with JC being like his mother, but him straight up not being WWX. It’s objectively impossible to say WWX doesn’t cause just as many, if not more and worse, fights than JC, at least to say so without lying. But JFM is like those radical celebrity stans that twist reality to support their vision of their idol. Actually, yeah, I think I’ve finally hit the jackpot here. Celebrity stans are the most impossible people, they justify everything their idols does as perfect and without reproach, and will not just antagonize, but vilify anyone who dares question them, much less call them out on their bullshit. That’s JFM’s approach to WWX and YZY respectively, and with JC being the one YZY- not stans, but tries to put in comparison to WWX- supports? Well, JC has to be inferior to WWX, of course. Am I overreaching here because of my absolute hatred for JFM? Maybe. Do I still believe his relationship to WWX is unhealthy? Also yes.

God, I went on another absolute tangent, didn’t I? Fuck, sorry. Also, sorry because that’s not the end of this. I didn’t expect to have so much to say about this, but every time I think I’m done with this rant, I find another line that I must mention to continue screaming about how much I detest JFM, specifically in this AU. Case in point: “They are all mourning an empty space.” JFM has so little care for his son that he assumes everyone else is grieving something as empty as his own relationship to JC, rather than everything JC was and still means to them.

Again, it’s not that JFM isn’t grieving, he is! He does mourn because “He had plans for his son.” But that’s the thing here, he’s mourning the loss of those plans more than the loss of JC. JC had significance to JFM not as the person he was, but because he was meant to fulfill a role, and now he can’t. And the way he is reacting to JC’s death? Ironically enough, he’s in the “anger” stage of grieving. He’s angry at JC for dying, for how he died and why he died, he’s angry at what wasn’t said and wasn’t done, and that’s absolutely fucking ironical, because his relationship to JC was always defined by JFM’s own lack of doing and lack of talking.

To finally finish this, I’m going to go all the way back to where I started and mention your tags and how JFM thinks he is kind and just for those thoughts he had of how he would have forced JC to stop writing if he had known, because that would have been the “obviously perfect” solution. Once more, I am incapable of comprehending how the man can be the only one in his family who does not see the writing as something important that brought JC happiness, only as the thing that killed him. I mean, to give him credit, he’s perhaps the only one that is directly thinking about how they could have saved him, but it’s presented so coldly, disregarding JC’s opinions and feelings about the idea. JFM presents the same approach that the Lan have to LWJ’s own illness, the same that LWJ actively rejects and that, according to my own interpretation of art disease, actively makes it worse, because of the lack of communication, because it demands of the sick person without giving them anything in return, because “being alive” is no reward without what gives life meaning, and inevitable the person will get back to their drug of choice if their families don’t repair their relationships to them so that these people become worthy of sacrificing the art that gives them so much life. All of this to say, JFM’s choices wouldn’t have the desired effect even if he had been in the position to make them, because he is not kind, nor just with JC, no matter what he tells himself.

Jiang Fengmian has been receiving letters of condolences all week. Many from sects that hadn’t even seen his son, some from sects that they have friendly relations with and some personal sounding letters from sects with heirs that had been close to his son. Gusu Lan has been particularly sorrowful, asking if Lan Wangji can visit and pay his respects.

Jiang Fengmian knew his children were friends with the Second Jade of Lan, but he hadn’t been aware that Jiang Cheng was so close. He always thought it was Wei Ying who was close to Lan Wangji. He’s come to learn over the past week that it is the other way around.

Odd.

His son was never a friendly boy. Always quiet, frowning and quick to pick fights. Well… What his son was like doesn’t matter anymore. He cannot talk to him and learn about him now. There is a hollow emptiness in his chest where he knows he is supposed to house grief.

His wife is not speaking to him. Neither is his daughter or Wei Ying. They are all mourning an empty space. He never thought he would lose his son so quickly, so suddenly. He had plans for his son, he’d pictured what the future would be like.

But now there is nothing but an empty void left where his son should have been.

They shouldn’t have lost Jiang Cheng so quickly and so pathetically. If they had but known they would have taken care of him, healed him, made him stop writing so that he could not run headfirst into death.

Jiang Cheng should have told them.

Writing wasn’t worth it. It wasn’t worth his life. How could he have not seen what his absence would have done to all of them? They are mourning him and he is gone. A child like grass, gone with the slightest bit of trampling.

Maybe not telling them had been his final act of defiance.

But how could he have let his pride take his life?

I would just really like to read a fic where WWX regrets how he treated LWJ before dying (specifically with LWJ constantly warning him that demonic cultivation was dangerous and WWX brushing him off and turning down his offers for help etc). While I do want WWX to apologize and be held accountable, I absolutely want happy Wangxian to be together and a fluffy ending for them! (also please nothing with JC bashing, if anything I'd prefer a fic where they have a strong brotherly relationship and WWX apologizes to him as well but my main concern is Wangxian). I just really feel like a fic like this has to exist in the 40k+ Wangxian fics out there lol, I just haven't been able to find it. Thank you!

It’s not studies that have Wei Ying stressed out. It’s everything else. It’s the recruitment for the research trial he’s coordinating. It’s jiejie and her impending marriage to His Royal Douchebag Jin Zixuan. It’s the volunteer work at the palliative care facility. It’s Wen Ning’s worsening condition. It’s Wen Qing working herself thin to care for her brother and Wen Yuan. It’s the way Wen Yuan never seems to have enough food.

So, yeah. There’s enough on Wei Ying’s plate already, meaning it’s not entirely welcome when he comes home and finds a man standing in his bedroom. A man in extravagant white robes, a ribbon tied around his forehead, long hair gathered into a topknot, fist clutching a sword at his side, who asks him, “Where am I?”

1/5 Omg I’m genuinely so sick of people saying that LXC should have looked into what happened to his mother (I’ve recently seen someone on twitter say that he needs to make up for it??) and it makes zero sense because...even WE don’t know anything about this situation that everyone’s so outraged about. Even if LXC had ‘looked into it’ which, for all we know, he HAS, what exactly is he going to find?? The only records of his mother and her crime are within the Lan clan, and are what the elders

2/5 have compiled. No one outside of the sect (and probably the main group of elders) knows about her crime because it was kept a secret. Both of his parents are dead. Literally any information LXC can get from ‘investigating’, supposing he hasn’t already done that, is probably what he’s already been told. And that’s assuming there is anything else to ‘find out’. It doesn’t seem like they’re getting up in arms about Madam Lan’s sentence, because there is literally nothing LXC could have done

3/5 (this is a resend for the LXC ask) about that situation, it looks like they’re annoyed because he didn’t do more investigating. But he gave WWX an outline of what happened and there nothing to say that isn’t exactly what happens. Maybe Madam Lan just did kill someone, and that’s all there is to it. Or maybe there’s more, and LXC just happened to not go into detail with WWX. It doesn’t reflect badly on LXC because we know nothing about his mother’s circumstances, and

4/5 for all we know, she could be a dangerous criminal. Or maybe she had a very good reason, maybe it was in self defence - we just don’t know. And maybe LXC already KNOWS this, maybe he is conflicted about it, ect. but we have a limited POV here from a character that LXC is not close to at all, so maybe he just isn’t willing to go into detail with WWX! Either way, it doesn’t really matter, because if madam Lan was wronged in any way, then it shouldn’t be her son - who had nothing to

5/5 do with it - who should bear the responsibility to make up for it. Not only that, but how can anyone blame LXC and then not blame LWJ for the exact same thing? They’re both adults, there’s like what, only 3-4 years between them? It’s just so annoying because it’s the most random thing to hold against him, especially for a situation where, again, no one knows anything about what happened. It’s another situation where people are just using their headcanons as ‘evidence.’

Yes, the important thing to keep in mind is that there is no reason for LXC to go in-depth about what happened to his mother with someone he hates for breaking his little brother’s heart. All we know of the situation is what LXC himself tells us: His mother killed his father’s teacher, his father married her to save her from execution, the two of them spent the rest of their lives in seclusion (with exceptions because hey, two kids), his mother died when LWJ was six and his father died when the Cloud Recesses were burned. That’s it. Is that all there is to the story? Maybe, maybe not. LXC and LQR are both clearly concerned that LWJ is following in his father’s footsteps, which could mean either Madam Lan was unwilling or they just don’t want him to spend the rest of his life locked away because of the actions of a criminal. And even if Madam Lan was unwilling... that’s not LXC’s fault. LWJ was six when she died; LXC isn’t much older than LWJ, he can’t have been older than nine or ten at most. What exactly do these people think he should have done? A child against the elders of his sect? And what would kicking up a fuss about it now accomplish? It’s done, both involved parties are dead, picking a fight with the clan elders likely wouldn’t achieve anything and would make it much harder for LXC to get them to agree with anything he suggested further down the road. Looking into the matter further than his words suggest he has would only have hurt him, even assuming there was anything else there for him to find. And that’s also assuming he hasn’t looked into it, which given he drops everything to investigate JGY when given the slightest reason to believe he’s untrustworthy I imagine he did the first chance he got.

And yeah, even if LXC was somehow culpable in what happened to his mother (he’s not, he wasn’t even alive for most of it, how can people seriously argue he has anything to atone for in this situation)... we don’t know that Madam Lan was an unwilling party in the whole affair. It’s entirely possible she was genuinely in love with Qingheng-jun and wanted to marry him, and agreed to seclusion to save her own life. That’s every bit as likely as him forcing her into it, because the only information we have on the situation is what LXC gives us.
