Wanted to rest my eyes from digital art so I filled a page with Daeneryses because why not

Developing fangan designs are so much fun. Having a sort of gimmick with their talent is a great prompt to jump off of. It’s sort of low stakes designing.

When I design for Rift it is still fun, but it’s with the expectation that because Rift is a comic I’m gonna need to break these designs down to their essentials and plan them out in a way that’s easy to understand for replication. There’s also gotta be sooome level of groundedness in their presentations. Distinct styles, but practical to a degree to suit their world. Although I am trying to incorporate more whimsical exaggeration. Loosen up a bit for maximum expression. But I’m still drawing them over and over again, but in many different poses and angles for my comic.

Fangan characters are much less serious of stakes. They have motivations and a level of depth as any character, but there’s a level of campiness that makes it more simple. They have full permission to be a bit goofy because of the tone of the story they exist in. Their presentation is direct and on the nose (unless subverting your expectations which is still fun!)

Idk, it’s just a fun time. I’ll be posting some of my designs sooner or later. As much as I love Rift I need a break from it sometimes so I can come back to it with fresh eyes and renewed vigor. Working on my fangans is an excellent distraction and great practice for a variety of character designs. Styles, body language, and body type. And it doesn’t need to be too serious.

I've been thinking about it for a bit (and it's probably obvious) but did you notice the giant frog and the tentacles are basically clown fish and anemones? I only realized once someone pointed out to me that the giant frogs have clown fish colors.

And then I realized the tentacles are also classified as "anthozoa" in the AB which is the the class anemones are a part of

The comment about nematocysts is also how it works for anemones, Kui draws a pretty cool graph of how it works too (a little different real ones but conveys the idea well)

I just always thought that was a pretty cool detail that I missed for a while! It's very cool how inspired by real animals Ryoko Kui's monsters are, I'm always amazed by how much sense they make.

i'm always a bit unsettled by disdain for intellectual or creative labor in leftist spaces. there's this commonly held belief that academics are a bunch of rich old white men, rather than a wide variety of people who are barely getting by. most lecturers in universities are adjuncts living paycheck to paycheck. authors make very little money as a general rule. most researchers are overworked and underpaid. and yet there's still this idea that academics are overcompensated to sit around and smoke cigars together while making shit up

wild to me that there are people who have no desire to paint their walls in fun ways. and i don't just mean "people who choose sad neutral colors on purpose" i mean: why aren't more homeowners out there scribbling on their walls? it's your property, you can paint and color and draw whatever you want to! when did we as a species stop fingerpainting our homes that was a mistake
