it would mostly stay the same with the setup bc while depressing as hell its super compelling. i can't even unkill mami bc that was fucking cinematography. BUT as things ramp up and you discover what's going on exactly instead of everyone basically giving up and dying they'd have a moment where they stopped trying to carry their burden alone and actually overcome the crushing sadness.

oh and i would cut the shit with sayaka going off the deep end for a boy. im sorry but go to hell!!!!!! she can still have a crush but i would lean more into how different and empty she feels as a girl with responsibilities beyond her years and its the self imposed isolation and desire for connection that really harms her not just plain rejection

and even tho i would want to cut the girls becoming witches at all the designs and horror and themes of it all is so good so instead i'd have it where the girls have their first run. everything goes to shit. everyone dies theres no hope but then homura basically breaks down spills the beans to madoka and cries and says she can't do this by herself she can't keep carrying the burden on her own and madoka right before transforming into a witch tells her she should never suffer alone and that no one heals suffering alone.

and this time when homura resets the loop she keeps that in mind and instead of trying to kill that evil rabbit on her own and try to prevent it all from happening entirely she reaches out to madoka and befriends her early on and she's still super bad at it bc uhhh 1000s of timeloops of grief don't go easy but she tries to rely on other people. and encourages everyone to not suffer alone and this time when everyone is at their lowest moment they actually see that glimmer of hope in their relationships and not die lol. this happens with each girl until its madokas turn and you have the betrayal from kyubei and she's overwhelmed with the notion that the suffering is endless. but she talks to her parents and realizes while they know nothing they are rooting for her and all the other magical girls have that cliche friendship is magic moment and.

and hell you can take it even further and have madoka actually give in to grief and THEN the support of others allows the last shred of her true self to evolve into godhood and fix the timeline. and if she doesnt turn into a witch then the bittersweet ending would be that the girls are together and stronger but are still locked in a seemingly eternal combat. but don't feel powerless. either or

but essentially i would just take what makes madoka good but take out that undercurrent of 'girlhood is eternal solitary suffering that no one could possibly understand' bc yeah while no one can feel exactly what you feel there are people that give a fuck!!!

re: that compromise ask (diff anon but heyyy right there with u) i was literally JUST thinking abt smth similar, about how esp in future/reunion fics, it’s always steve crawling on his knees for forgiveness for how he used to be, and eddie like. heaving a big sigh and “going back on his principles” or whatever to forgive steve. and steve like having to prove he’s better now or whatever which like. fine sure yeah steve was a high school bully. he threw slurs around and he definitely objectified women (although come on it’s high school social strata everyone was objectifying everyone, ain’t none of those babies had enough brain cells yet to see other people as people, that’s just being fucking 16) and he was a bitch, not arguing there.

and 2) canonically eddie is the judgmental one??? i mean steve literally apologized and made amends on screen but if that’s not enough look at just purely going off the way the kids interact with them! they’re completely comfortable with steve. yeah he rolls his eyes and huffs and complains about their “nerd shit” but he still drives them to dnd nights! he still does that lame ass handshake with dustin! he still listens to all the stuff they ramble about, and you know he does it every time even when we don’t see it on screen, because they’re totally comfortable doing it! no doubt, no question steve will listen and support them, even when he doesn’t understand. dustin comes to scoops knowing without a doubt that steve will drop everything to listen to him talk about camp, and be excited about it! steve doesn’t give a shit about science camp, but dustin does, and that’s enough for him! yeah dustin is excited to talk about suzie, because girls are common ground with steve, but steve doesn’t know he met suzie when he takes his break, he just wants to hear about how dustin’s nerd stuff was going! he doesn’t have to understand or relate, he just wants them to do the stuff that makes them happy, and they know that. they trust him to listen even if he doesn’t get it

but the way mike and dustin were so nervous to ask eddie to postpone hellfire, even after months of knowing him, shows that they don’t trust him to let them have interests outside of his understanding. and they shouldn’t! he’s proven that he veered so hard into “nonconformity” he just reinforced the same social boundaries he claims to hate. everything with eddie is “us v them,” and like! i get it! i think it’s a complicated dichotomy and makes for an interesting character! i’m an eddie stan first and a person second ok listen i love the man. but if anyone needs to beg on their knees for forgiveness for being a dick in high school, it’s the guy who ruined BOTH of lucas’ favorite activities in one fell swoop by projecting his own insecurities and fake social rivalry onto a literal child. (i’m still so mad he managed to force lucas to miss the campaign finale he’d worked so hard for AND made sure that none of his friends or family were there to watch him play basketball all at once i’m never over it. i’m frothing at the mouth. apologize to lucas or meet my blade)

but there’s this trend where people are like “oh man eddie’s such a good person for looking past king steve and loving steve anyway! he’s rehabbing the jock! he’s fixing him!” fuck you. fix your damn self. the duffers’ childish ass hatred of “non nerds” is sooooo pervasive in this fandom it’s so gross.

i wish we had gotten to see eddie repent for what he did to lucas, because honestly, i still hold it against him.

what’s especially funny to me about it is that steve’s sins (in s4) were over two years ago, eddie’s were last week lmao. like, one of them needs to go around apologising and it’s not steve.

but yeah! the kids have an ease around steve that they don’t around eddie. classic example: all the kids go to steve in s3, not even pretending to be polite or actually ask, and just pound on the bell until he comes to let them through the back of scoops to watch a movie. they don’t worry about his reaction. steve could literally get fired doing this, but they know he’s going to do it, and feel so comfortable that he won’t have a bad reaction, that there isn’t any hesitation.

when asking eddie to postpone a game, mike and dustin are shaking in their little boots. they’re flinching and looking away, and trying not to actually ask. those aren’t kids in the presence of someone comforting!! this isn’t a guy they would think deserves steve begging on his knees. if eddie was being a prick about steve’s past for no reason other than to hold some moral superiority over him, the kids would get pissed off.

if anyone is getting rehabilitated in their relationship, it’s eddie, not steve!! because being a jock isn’t inherently bad, and being a nerd isn’t inherently good, no matter what the duffers may be trying to tell you.

okay so we’ve been meaning to write this for a while but havent bc we’ve been focusing on other projects. slight disclaimer if u dont agree w this hc thats fine, just dont be a dick just bc it interferes w ur own interpretation . we all have our own ways of reading the text so. Yeah!! lets get started

so i just wanna say akane is a character i resonate with in a lot of ways, and a lot of what im going to say comes from my and others’ experiences. ur identities and experiences r def gonna affect how u view a piece of work right? 

so when i played through the series in 2023, i initially viewed akane as everyone else did: she’s in love with junpei, and even hced her as bi like most of the fandom. but the more i studied the source material, the more i felt thats not rlly the case?? esp after ztd, like im sorry but i cannot buy the idea that both junpei or akane wanna marry each other. junpei is for another day but in terms of akane i wanna talk abt the idea that she may be aromantic. 

immersing myself in the fandom, a lot of ppl’s first impressions of akane’s june persona is that she was initially gonna be this ditzy girl next door who only serves as a love interest for junpei. ofc that ended up not being the case, but i see ppl say that they only rlly cared for akane after finding out she’s zero. which imo is such a missed opportunity for analysis.

as june, akane interacts with the world through tropes. the first thing she does when we’re introduced to her is fall on junpei. and overall is seen as this nervous girl who wouldn’t harm anyone. she flirts w junpei throughout the game, yadda yadda yadda. when it comes to her identity as zero, she desperately wants a perfect ending where she can be with junpei. its guesswork as to which aspects are true of akane, but i personally see these traits as smth she thinks “kanny” would do.

but actions speak louder than words, and she doesn’t go far beyond flirting and declarations of love. in ztd, she doesn’t even make these advances even when she’s trying to lighten the mood or make things right with junpei. the only time being when she speaks with carlos in the pantry.

june is meant to be seen as the ideal japanese woman, and since performance/identity is a huge part of her character, it wouldn’t be a stretch to say that she’s performing heterosexuality/amatonormativity, by extension femininity (but that’s an analysis for another day). 

akane is also slotted into the role of a mother figure for kyle just as sigma with the role of father. i can’t help but think of the scene in little shop of horrors (1986), audrey sings abt a stable and “ideal” middle class life. i remember watching it thinking it was odd, given that im aro and am not interested in settling down or emulating cishet middle class values. but my friend, who is poor just like audrey and akane, told me that it’s a common occurrence for poor ppl to think this way. to want a sense of stability even if it’s stereotypical. i feel like this applies to akane as well. i also hc her with bpd, and instability is a common symptom for us, so it makes sense for her to see junpei as a beacon of such, of normalcy. he’s rlly the only normal part of her childhood. she wants him to fix her lol .

and while we do see oldkane/vlrkane reminisce abt her life w junpei thru kyle, the passcode being jumpydolls, i feel like thats less abt love and more abt the fact that shes lonely, which a lot of ppl mistake that like. love can fix that.. when it rlly cant. not to mention what i said earlier

akane and junpei rarely make physical contact beyond junpei holding her in his arms and hugging. you can of course be a couple and not be that physically affectionate, but junpei is the only one initiating this. also like?? not even an “i love you” when you haven’t seen each other in nine years???????

this is actually a common experience for aros who dont realize aromanticism is even an option. i remember when i was a kid, i’d have daydreams of getting married and dating ppl but when the opportunity actually came, i was uncomfortable and rejected it. 

i feel like junpei’s proposal and akane’s acceptance were reckless of both of them, and probably not even signs of true feelings. junpei’s arc is abt regaining agency, and akane’s is abt control (hashtag cinematic parallels), so it makes sense this would happen. both wish they could return to their childhoods, hence their emotionally immature attitudes + tendency to reminisce abt the past (junpei is counterphobic to this though and eventually gets over it in vlr’s timeline, though akane continues to act this way going forward). poor decision making is a sign of trauma after all. 

i mentioned how akane (and junpei but again. Another story for another day) subverts gendered expectations w her personality. aro ppl (as well as lesbians if u wanna go for a lesbian akane reading) tend to feel disconnected from their agab bc yk we arent straight and like a cishet woman liking a man is a sign of womanhood according to Society............ so like what if ur a girl who likes girls? or doesnt like anyone??? what does that make u??? (again, this could either be a trans reading or a lesbian reading)

YES OH MY GOD I'VE BEEN WAITING TO EXPAND ON THIS i just couldn't figure out how to work it into my story (though, there's a little bit in my original chapter!!). i'm gonna go through roxy, the boys, jo, and camille for this one and its SO LONG but i hope you enjoy bc i had so much fun writing it

How many people are in her immediate family? - The only person in Roxy's immediate family is her father, Declan Somerset. How many people are in her extended family?/Does she have aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents, etc? - Roxy has no idea how many people are in her extended! As far as she's aware, her father has his parents who she's never met and probably never will meet. Her father is the only person who she has ever considered her family, and that's just fine by her. - Information from the author wise, this is just flavor and will probably never come up in the actual story, Declan is an only child, but his parents had many siblings, leaving him with a shit ton of cousins. However, his father and mother both had large age gaps between them and their closest in age sibling so all of his cousins are 10+ years older than him. In combination with leaving home at 17 after falling out with his parents and his family members being far older than he is, he's never felt the need to ever reconnect with anyone blood related to him after moving from Texas to Minnesota. By extension, Roxy has never met or learned about anyone in her family beyond her own father. Who in her family is she closest with? - This may come as a shock: Her father. Is she close with her birth family, or does she have a found family? - Roxy is not close with her bio mom, and Declan being her biological dad would make her technically close with her birth family I guess! - Another fun author fact: In the original draft of this story, Roxy's mother played a big role in her connection to the arts and music and had recently passed away, severing her ties to anything music related. Her father, after seeing this, pushed her to go audition at the pop star search and that's how she ended up meeting the guys etc, etc. but i realized that's almost exactly the same as the plot to one of my favorite shows, Julie and the Phantoms, and i completely wrote her mom out of the story and am now trying to achieve the "Kendall and Katie's dad effect" where she's just never mentioned. She truly matters so little I never even named her lmaooo - In the published version (more flavor text tbh), her mom moved from Texas back to her hometown of Duluth to have Roxy, dumped her on Declan, dipped, and they never heard from her again. Mag, roped Roxy into joining his band during the first week of her freshman year at her first high school. Dani, the drummer, though mostly keeping to themself eventually came around to both her and Mag enough to join as well. The three of them were mostly just a shitty cover band, but as Roxy started to grow into her own (and into her feelings for Mag) she became comfortable enough to begin sharing her songs with her friends. when this backfired, she was so depressed over everything that had happened with them her father literally made her change schools between freshman and sophomore year so she'd hopefully never see them again. two weeks after the switch, she goes to the audition and her life is forever changed!

2. Carlos

How many people are in his immediate family? - His mother (Sylvia), father (Erik), and three older sisters (Maria, Lupe, and Alena). - Along with these six living under one roof, his grandparents (unnamed, mom's side) live in one of those duplex houses with them How many people are in his extended family?/Does he have aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents, etc? - Carlos just has the biggest fucking family on the planet, he couldn't name everyone even if he tried. he and his sisters combined couldn't name everyone if they tried! they all meet once every few years to check up on each other, but rarely hear from them outside of that. since they're so large of a family, they're spread out across the US, though he's the first Garcia to settle in California! Who in his family is he closest with? - His dad! If not evidenced from chapter 8, he and his father get along the best. they match each other completely in energy and ideas, and having four girls living with them meant they often had to band together when they ganged up on each other. Is he close with his birth family, or does he have a found family? - Why have one when we can have BOTH! He's close with his immediate family, and sees Logan, James, and Kendall as an extension of this. They're his brothers!!!! Forever!!! Always!!!! are they only children?/do they have any cousins their age they hung out with before hollywood?/how close are they/did they keep in contact? - no/yes/not/no or were there only peers from school? - Carlos is just such a sweetheart he's got so many friends from school because everyone loves him! While he never got as close to anyone as he did Logan, James, and Kendall, he did value the friendships he made in Minnesota and I imagine he texts his other friends randomly like "had some caramel coffee today, your favorite! miss you!" and "i'll guest list you for the duluth show, let me know if you can make it"

3. Kendall

How many people are in his immediate family? - I see his situation nearly identical to Roxy's with the addition of a sister! - Jennifer and Katie are the only members of his immediate family. How many people are in his extended family?/Does he have aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents, etc? - 0... I think Jennifer lost her parents at a pretty young age and went through the foster care system which is why she's so overprotective and doting on her own children. She knew what it was like to love and lose, and really wanted a family of her own so her own children would never have to feel the same way. Who in his family is he closest with? - Katie! From the minute he could teach her to scheme, they've been thick as thieves. They know each other so well they might as well be able to communicate via telepathy at this point. Is he close with his birth family, or does he have a found family? - Re: Carlos are they only children?/do they have any cousins their age they hung out with before hollywood?/how close are they/did they keep in contact? - no/no/not/no or were there only peers from school? - The hockey team! Like he grew up playing with Logan, James, and Carlos I think he's been around those guys for so long they're really good friends of his. I don't think they really keep in contact all that much, but he can see what they're up to on ScuttleButter and will comment on posts etc

4. Logan

How many people are in his immediate family? - His moms, Joanna and Sabina, are the only members of his immediate family. - Another fun fact: In the original draft, Logan had a little brother named Percy! I tried to work him into the story but then it got way too Logan-centric and eventually I just forgot Percy existed at all a la Tina from That 70s Show, so I just took him out entirely. How many people are in his extended family?/Does he have aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents, etc? - I think Joanna's family keeps in contact and she has both her parents and a few siblings with one or two kids around Logan's age! They're not Duluth local, but they see each other a few times throughout the year and Logan does his best to keep in contact with them, even if they are on the jerky side of the jock spectrum. I think they all play hockey too :) -Sabina's family didn't keep in contact after she came out :( but she was gladly accepted into Joanna's family, so that counts for her extended family! Who in his family is he closest with? - Sabina... She's a pediatric doctor! Through their shared love of medicine, she inspired him to want to pursue his own career in medicine! Though, I'd say he's just as close with Joanna, too, because she's a hockey head! I can't decide lol :) Is he close with his birth family, or does he have a found family? - Logan, while not their bio son, was adopted practically the second he was born and his bio mom needed to put him up for adoption, so he considers his moms his birth family. As seen, they're very close. Also re: Carlos and Kendall on found family <3 are they only children?/do they have any cousins their age they hung out with before hollywood?/how close are they/did they keep in contact? - yes/yes/moderately/yes or were there only peers from school? - re: Kendall, though I imagine Logan is the kinda guy to be in like 40 different clubs too - he's got friends from chess club to AV club to DnD club... 5. James

How many people are in his immediate family? - From what he considers, his mother, Brooke, even if they don't really get along. His dad, Blake, and his girlfriend, Penny, are just... There. And he has to stay with them sometimes. How many people are in his extended family?/Does he have aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents, etc? - Brooke cut her parents off once she became a successful business owner and moved to the mid-west. He has family somewhere on the east coast, but he wouldn't know how to go about contacting them... He also doesn't really care. - Wanting as little to do with Blake as possible, James tends to avoid family gatherings on that side, but he has two grandparents over there. Penny also has her parents and a sister, but he hates seeing them too. Anything relating in anyway back to his father is something he tries to ignore. Who in his family is he closest with? - By default, Brooke, but only because he doesn't have other options. Is he close with his birth family, or does he have a found family? -Found family all the way. Kendall, Carlos, Logan, Jennifer, and Katie mean the world to him! And of course, the new girl who followed him across the country to help his dreams come true does too... though, he doesn't consider her to be family... - Don't get it wrong, he loves his mom, just... He'd rather be around his friends... are they only children?/do they have any cousins their age they hung out with before hollywood?/how close are they/did they keep in contact? - yes/no/not/no or were there only peers from school? - In a similar vein to Carlos, James is just so charismatic he draws other people to him unintentionally. 6. Jo

How many people are in her immediate family? - Her father... She's also a child of divorce to me, so her mother and older sister are in the picture... Just... Also not because her parents separated when they were practically babies. It's where her jealousy issues come from... Her mom cheated on her dad so he split and got Jo in the custody battle and her mom got her sister and moved away from North Carolina. That's why it was so easy for them to up and leave their home state and start a new life in Los Angeles + it was better for his government job. How many people are in her extended family?/Does she have aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents, etc? - She's got grandparents, two uncles, and a few cousins! They helped her dad through the divorce, and Jo is much closer with them than she is her mom and sister. Who in her family is she closest with? - By default, now, her father, though before she left NC, her grandmother! She taught theater at her local high school and inspired Jo to move out to LA to chase her dream <3 They still talk almost every day, too. - Now I'm retconning my own story and saying she's on the phone with her grandma in the chapter where Kendall is trying to woo her LMAO Is she close with her birth family, or does she have a found family? - Birth family for sure, just her dad's side! - Though, as time goes on, Camille and Roxy are starting to feel like sisters! (Good sisters, that is, not shitty older sisters who only call on her birthday) are they only children?/do they have any cousins their age they hung out with before hollywood?/how close are they/did they keep in contact? - no/yes/moderately/if she remembers to call them on holidays or were there only peers from school? - I imagine Jo was moderately popular in school and had a good lot of friends, similar to Carlos' situation at his school. She got along with everyone, but was never really close to anyone enough to keep talking to them once she moved.

7. Camille

How many people are in her immediate family? - Her mom and dad, and her FIVE older brothers. Yeah. - I never gave her parents names, but her brothers (from oldest to youngest) are Gabriel, Jean-Luc, Elliot, Claude, and Jules How many people are in her extended family?/Does she have aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents, etc? - She has no clue, considering it was such a hassle to travel with six children her parents just never did, outside of their annual camping trip. So, she's never met all of her family, but she knows she has grandparents, a few aunts and uncles, and a small army of cousins. Who in her family is she closest with? Her closest in age brother, Jules! Before she and her dad moved to Hollywood in her pre-teen years, he was the last remaining brother living in her childhood house before moving out when she was 11. Though their primary mode of communication is through the phone, they talk pretty regularly and are able to match each other's energies well. When she get's all crazy, he always knows what to say to calm her down. Plus, he loves Logan... Can't wait to meet the guy... So Camille loves talking to him! Is she close with her birth family, or does she have a found family? - She's close with her birth family, but since she moved away from them as a young girl, she doesn't really feel all that connected to them. They feel more like extended relatives than immediate relatives, but it doesn't bother her! Everyone in her family loves her, even if they do think she can be a bit over the top sometimes. - Before going to her family about important things, however, Camille finds herself rushing to Jo and Roxy <3 are they only children?/do they have any cousins their age they hung out with before hollywood?/how close are they/did they keep in contact? - no/yes/not/no or were there only peers from school? - She's got her friends from the Palm Woods school, considering she practically grew up with most of the kids in that classroom, but she's never felt closer to anyone than she has Jo, Roxy, Logan, Kendall, Carlos, and James.

personally i am an aroace wednesday truther i’m ngl, like she doesn’t show any interest in anyone (that’s kind of her whole thing) and the few times she does it’s out of obligation (or manipulation but we don’t talk about that #girlboss). and as much as i hate love triangles with pasty guys this one definitely wasn’t the worst one i’ve seen, esp bc it never really played into the “oh no who do i choose” thing since. again. she never really showed interest in either of them it was just these two guys being into this awesome unique girl (as they should). wenclair is cute and i could appreciate the ship (same w wednesday and bianca) but i see them as more of a qpr, if they were to be a canon romantic relationship though, i would still be overjoyed bc i would never think netflix would opt for that. if wednesday does have to end up with a love interest (which. she shouldn’t. she very obviously does not want or need one) i would want it to be xavier just bc tyler is. so so fucked up i do not understand anyone who can watch the entire season and their only takeaway is to ship wednesday and tyler, it makes me want to throw up in my mouth. plus i feel like wednesday and xavier would get each other more (as long as they actually flesh out xavier’s character, he’s got a lot of potential please don’t let him be pasty for eternity). but anyway. aroace wednesday for life baybee

you know, i think all i'd want to rewrite is my blemiplat fic. all my stuff from other fandoms are kind of relics of the person n writer i was during the time those fics were posted, but i reread the blemiplat fic recently and it BUGGED ME. after all the time i spent agonizing over what to write for arknights (which you were there to hear, u brave n beloved soul) and all the wips i ended up making, i published just the one thing and it was too early... i NEEDED the deep plat lore, she's out of character w/ the new info we got and it drove me BONKERS when i reread it recently... in some alternate universe a more disciplined bandit rewrote that fic, but this one is leaving it be

like any good jester, i've got mad jokes! that hasn't changed, but i think in the past i was capable of establishing a strong mood and setting and keeping a fic very contained within that atmosphere. i dont think my newer works have that cozy contained feeling anymore, but it could be im being more daring w/ my new fics? the jury is out...

characters, for sure. i live n die by whether or not characters r recognizable, esp since my plots tend to be along the lines of "hey wouldn't it be funny if". its important to me that my writing is technically strong too, but i can and have convinced ppl to follow me to places they wouldn't go w/ a gun as long as my character work is strong

[Pearl] slips from her perch and muscles into the space between Marina and the arm of the couch, leaning her entire (insubstantial) body weight against Marina's side. They’re pressed hip to hip, as close as they can get without Pearl going squid and clambering crawling into her lap. She's taken to doing that recently, an about-face from the Pearl who usually restricts herself to friendly bumps of the shoulder and quick, one-armed hugs.

To be fair, that's a boundary that Marina set to begin with. She'd been so skittish in the early days, longing for and shying away from friendly touch in equal measure. Then came her stupid, awful, wonderful crush, and with it the lingering fear that Pearl would see right through her if they touched. Pearl would get too close, and she’d know that Marina was helplessly in love, head over heels, and that just couldn't happen. She couldn’t give away one secret without losing the other. Her past, octolings and inklings, Off the Hook… it was too much complication, even without considering that Pearl didn't love her like that. 

But the big secret is out now, and Pearl's reaction has outstripped even her wildest dreams. Not only did Pearl accept her, all of her, without a second thought, she’s even helping Eight settle into life on the surface. Not to mention the way Pearl’s been acting lately. She’s so sweet, practically doting, and Marina can’t help but hope that she has a chance -- if only she can keep from getting ahead of herself.

But it’s just so hard to play it cool when Pearl is warm and plyable and close enough for Marina to smell her ridiculously-expensive cologne. One of Marina's tentacles squirms over her shoulder to twine around Pearl’s narrow frame, the tip of it coming to rest coyly on her collar. She nearly chokes, her cheeks blazing with heat.

And that’s the other reason why she tries not to open herself up to more contact than girl friends -- girls being friends, oh cod -- would normally share. Her tentacles and their occasionally-uncooperative brains want nothing more than to betray her constantly.
