best thing about painted devils (an excellent book) is that a relatively major plot point was vanja’s cringefail brother blocking the suez* canal

What's the birth order of the Ros family siblings? And was it ever stated in the text?
Oh heavens, I'm not sure if it was ever explicitly stated beyond "___ is the oldest" and "___ and ___ are twins" type stuff, so maybe it could have been puzzled out with one of those "John, Susie, Steven, and Jane are going to the movies, John HATES popcorn, Susie is sitting next to Jane" grids?? But for simplicity's sake, here's a rundown under a cut for spoilers.
Oldest to youngest, their age as of Painted Devils, and what they do:
Katrin (F) - 28, runs the family horse farm w/husband and 3 kids
Jörgi (NB) - 27, runs the family forge
Jakob (M), Udo (M), Luisa (F) - 26, triplets; weaver hedgewitch, sheep farmer, and housewife respectively
Ozkar (M) - 25, artificer warlock
Eida (F) - 24, seamstress
Helga (F) - 22, hedgewitch and midwife apprentice
Dieter (M) and Erwin (M) - 21, small-time bard and general laborer, respectively
Sånnik (M) - 20, helps on family farm
Henrik (M) - 19, monastic scholar
Vanja (F) - 17, ??? Profit

Levi stood in shock. The blood was seeping out of your wound slowly but the longer he stared he couldn’t move. He was going to loose you at this rate. Right when he got you back. Suddenly the door busted open and Hange looked at the sight in front of her.
“Levi what are you doing? What happened?” Hange sprang into action trying her best to do a patch job with what they had available to them. Levi still couldn’t move. He opened his mouth but nothing came out. Suddenly he was slapped in the face.
“Pull your self together or she will die.” Hange yelled at him. Levi was finally pulled out of his trance.
“She was shot. I’m going after them.”
“Levi, no, she needs a hospital. C’mon there is a infirmary in the capital.” Without another word, Levi grabbed his 3DM gear, grabbed your unconscious body, and left. Hange was left in the room, surrounded by your personal effects and a giant pile of blood.
She quickly looked around before leaving the room. As she left her eyes lingered on a small box on the dresser near the room. It seemed like a jewelry box but with what little was inside it, it could hardly be called that. However, a small velvet box stood open, and inside was probably the nicest ring she had ever saw. Shaking her head, she left the room and gathered the rest of the squad, telling them that they had to leave. It was no longer safe.
----
On the surface the squad quickly rushed to the closest military infirmary and met up with Levi. He was standing next to a room, his eyes were lost in thought. Hange called out his name and he looked up.
He was an entire mess. His eyes were bloodshot and red from constant rubbing. His perfectly manicured hair more resembled a bird's nest, and his shirt was covered in blood. Your blood.
“Levi,” Erwin breathed out. “You have to tell us what is going on. This isn’t like you at all.” Levi looked into the eyes of his closest companions. Biting the inside of his cheek, he slid down the wall behind him and sat, his legs close to his chest.
“Please captain,” Eren said, a hint of urgency in his tone. “Y/n wouldn’t want this. How can you act like this?” Levi sent a glare to the titan shifter.
“How dare you? I am your captain. You don’t even know her.”
“If you’re my captain then act like it!” Levi gritted his teeth. Standing up he walked over to Eren, a newfound fire in his eyes, before kicking him in the shin. Eren smiled through the pain, happy to see his captain finally act like himself.
Suddenly a nurse came out of the room. She looked at the group in front of her before her eyes went wide in amazement.
“Captain Levi,” She called out, pushing a hair behind her ear. “She is ready for you now.” Levi directed his attention to the nurse and headed straight into the room. The rest of the team followed him in, Armin acknowledged her before closing the door behind him.
Inside you were sleeping soundly. From the way you were wrapped up, you were gonna make it. Levi moved towards the head of the bed and sat in the chair. He grabbed your hand softly before turning his attention to the people in the room.
“I guess I should be honest with you guys now. Especially after everything that just occurred.” The rest of his squad got comfortable while he tried to find the right words. Never in all of his time knowing these people did he ever think that he would be forced to be so vulnerable, so open. He took a big breath in and decided to just be blunt.
“Y/n is my fiance.” The room got so quiet after that, you could hear a pin drop. “When I joined the survey corps, I had left her in the underground. I was going to bring her aboveground when I was told she was murdered. I only just found out she was alive.” Another round of silence filled the room. No one was sure what to say. How could they find the words to comfort their captain? They just found out about this whole new side of him. They didn’t need to find the right words though, since in the moment after he told them the truth, you had woken up.

I finally remembered to roll the ROS. The Almighty ROS(TM) has decided that Sylvi bake 5 desserts to flex her culinary muscle (and also a burglary but one step at a time, people!). Look how cute she is! She's absolutely made up with her crepe suzettes. I'm sure Erwin will be looking forward to these.
Sylvi is aromantic, so no dating for her!

General Audiences | Parental Levi, semi-sickfic
FOR THE AOT G4G & POTATOAREN ON TWT
Tumblr media
Perhaps the first thing that genuinely surprises new recruits about warfare is that the barracks are never silent. Maybe they expect to hear firearms from inside their bunks, explosions and screams through the thick outer walls, all the action that’s happening far away from them.
What they never expect is to be able to hear those firearms inside their own heads. To hear screams from their bunkmates, roommates, even from those across the hallway. When night falls on the cadets, all they can pray for is a night of seamless rest; those prayers are rarely answered.
When Levi was a cadet, he would ignore his roommates when they cried out from their nightmares. Many were homesick, and even more were traumatised. So was Levi, in a way; in any case, he had no time for those who made their suffering into everyone else’s problem.
But now, he was Captain Levi of the 104th, and he had night patrol, and his subordinates were kids: silly, naïve dreamers who just wanted to bring peace to their homes. Their suffering was his problem now, and he sure as hell wasn’t going to make them go through it alone like he had.
For once, the room they’d locked the Yeager boy in was quiet. He usually he was awake when the patrols came round, possibly because of heightened senses or possibly just because of trauma. Even when he was asleep he was usually suffering nightmares that Levi did his best to wake him from. Hange, too, often commented on Eren’s seemingly endless energy considering his sleepless nights.
All things considered, perhaps Levi should be grateful not to have to check on the kid for yet another night; he didn’t particularly enjoy trying to calm recently orphaned teenagers. Most of the time a quick shake awake was enough before he had to move on to the girls’ quarters, but it was still awkward and uncomfortable for everyone involved. Then again, maybe this silence was just plain suspicious, and Levi should check anyway.
He debated this for a minute. Which would be worse: disturbing Yeager’s only night of peaceful sleep for months, or only finding out tomorrow morning that the kid died overnight? That would definitely go down well with Erwin (not).
With a heavy sigh, Levi made his choice. He clanked the bolt open and stepped into Eren’s room.
It was dark in there, only dimly lit by Levi’s lamp. He could make out the shapes of the bed and blankets, and the lump in the centre that must be Eren. Well, the kid was definitely alive, alright; his breathing came in loud, dramatic gasps that reminded Levi of the time someone fell into a pond and almost drowned, had Hange not rescued them with barely a minute to spare.
“Oi, Yeager,” Levi said, not bothering to lower his voice. “Hey. Are you awake?” He advanced towards the bed, hand outstretched to jostle Eren awake.
Eren whined; Levi could now see that the blankets had been thrown off completely, sweat covering the boy’s face and neck. He quickly retracted his hand so he didn’t have to touch any of that, instead leaning down to peer at Eren’s face.
“Hm,” he mused. “Ill.”
As he held the lamp closer, Eren’s face was thrown into drastic relief and the extent of the illness was immediately obvious. The cadet’s face was practically the shade of a tomato with fever and stress; sweat poured down from his forehead, and his face twisted in various expressions of discomfort and even pain.
Levi sighed, regretting every decision that had lead him to taking over night patrols. Yes, he was a kind-of functioning nocturnal man. No, he didn’t want to spend his time trying to fix some kid’s illness in the middle of the night.
With a wince, he put the back of his hand to Eren’s forehead.
“Fever,” he noted. Gingerly, he poked at Eren’s neck and nose. “No lymph nodes swollen.” A gentle shoulder shake proved he was half conscious, but not truly responding to anything Levi did or said. His uneven breathing still filled the room.
Levi huffed. “Sorry about this, kid, but I think you need a doctor.”
“Overwork,” said Hange, as soon as they saw him. “Stress. Tension. Whatever you wanna call it. I’m not a qualified doctor, though.”
“We don’t have a qualified doctor right now,” Levi reminded them. “And people don’t get that sick from stress. I don’t think he can even breathe.”
“Kids at war get that sick from stress,” Hange shrugged. “We can’t all be super soldiers like you.”
“I’ve never met a kid that gets sick from stress,” Levi grumbled.
“They usually die before they get the chance,” Hange said cheerfully, and felt Eren’s forehead. “Yup. There’s not much we can do at the moment. Just wait for the fever to break.”
Levi rolled his eyes. “What’s the point of being a titan if you still get this ill? I’ll go and get a wet towel or something.”
“Just damp, not wet,” Hange advised. “And, well – maybe it was the titan shifting that made him ill in the first place.”
Levi pondered this as he hunted for a clean-ish cloth in the laundry pile. Obviously, he himself hadn’t been a particularly fragile child, the Ackerman blood had made sure of that. Still, even the tiny babies in the slums hadn’t ever gotten sick without a tangible cause. There was always something – malnutrition, dehydration, boredom, cold, warm – that made them cry, something technically fixable if you had the means. If Eren was sick without a cause, that was just ridiculous. But if Eren was sick because of the titan shifting…
Having an ill cadet with no true cure was an unnerving and frustrating experience, Levi thought, dunking the cloth in cold water. Disheartening, even. What do you do? How do you make them feel better? Do you just shoot them like a lame horse?
That was probably too far, he decided, and squeezed the excess from the cloth. Better just wait and see what Yeager said when he woke up.
“Back to bed, then,” Hange said once they’d arranged the cloth neatly on Eren’s forehead. “Or, back to work, for you.”
“I’m not certain it’s fine to just leave him,” said Levi, watching Eren turn over and displace the cloth. Levi straightened it.
“Of course it is,” Hange sighed. “I don’t like it either, but there’s nothing for us to do.”
Levi looked at Eren, curled up in an almost foetus-like position. He looked very small; no comparison to cadets like Reiner or even Jean, who were tall, appearing older than they truly were. Eren was their age, but had to make up for his lack of strength and height with volume, starting fights and screaming louder in what Levi suspected was a slightly pathetic attempt at establishing dominance. He was a titan shifter, of course, so if he truly wanted he could just kill them all. Levi never once thought Eren actually would – he was a kid and he was a good kid, just the same as Reiner and Jean and all the other new recruits were.
“We don’t know what this fever will do,” said Levi decisively. “I’ll stay with him.”
“What, you think he’s just gonna suddenly titan shift?” Hange snorted.
“Maybe,” Levi said, which was only half a lie. “Check the girls’ section for me.”
“What?! No! I want to go to sleep!”
Levi glared at them. Hange sighed. “Alright, fine, whatever. Come and get me at midnight and we’ll change over, okay? You need sleep too.”
“Sure.” A full lie, but who’s counting?
Another quick check over Eren, and Hange left; Levi settled himself on the floor by the head of the bed, back leaning against the cold wall and eyes trained on Eren’s twisted expression. “Don’t know about you, kid, but this illness is really taking it out of me. Get well soon, alright?”
Eren could only groan in response.
Levi only knew it was morning because his lamp had gone out but the room was still light. From his spot on the floor, the window was too high up to reveal anything to him about the outside world, but he didn’t mind. The last thing he wanted after being up all night was a beam of sunlight directly into his eyes.
Eren was awake, too, but silently so. His breathing was much more even now, his fever broken, but his red-ringed eyes and shiny face revealed the turbulence of the night. Around the witching hour, Levi had finally put the bed covers back over Eren, and they hadn’t been tugged off again, allowing Eren to finally get some semi-comfortable sleep. From where Levi was sitting, Eren looked even younger than fifteen, curled into himself and fragile.
“Do you remember anything from last night?” Levi ventured, cursing his rough tone.
“No,” said Eren nervously. “Did I hurt someone?”
“No.” Levi studied Eren’s face. “Why would you think you did?”
Eren shrugged. “S what I’m capable of now, I guess. Aren’t I?”
“You are.”
They lapsed back into silence, before Eren ventured-
“Why are you in here? I- I mean, can I help you, Captain Levi, sir?”
“You can not. In fact, I’m here to help you,” said Levi, standing up. “Come here. Let me check your temperature.”
Eren obediently froze, allowing Levi to press his hand to his forehead again. “Hm,” Levi said. “Better.”
“Was it high yesterday or something?”
“You really don’t remember anything…”
“Well, you’re standing guard over me, so I can assume-“
“Standing guard?”
It was at this moment that Levi realised he probably did look like he was standing guard. In a way, he was, but not in the same way that Eren thought. Eren suspected that he’d hurt or killed someone and was being kept under even more suspicion than he already was, whereas in truth, Levi wasn’t there because he was worried about the danger the kid posed to other people. He was more worried about the danger posed to Eren, by whatever mystery illness had taken him overnight.
He wasn’t going to tell Eren all of that, though.
“I’m not standing guard,” he said instead, retracting his hand, satisfied that the worst of the fever had gone. “You were ill, if you didn’t know.”
“I was?” Eren still didn’t look convinced that he wasn’t in trouble. “I had a fever, right? Did it make me do anything weird? Anything-“
“For the last time, Yeager, you haven’t done anything wrong!” Levi snapped. “I know you’re worried that your titan shifting will cause you trouble but you’re learning to control it, alright? Now stop with the stupid questions.”
“Yes, sir,” Eren mumbled, looking sheepish.
Thankfully, the awkward silence that followed didn’t last long. Just as Levi was debating trying to start some kind of emotional conversation that would leave both of them uncomfortable, Hange burst through the door looking, as usual, deranged.
“You didn’t come get me!” they complained, pointing an accusing finger at Levi.
“You’re annoying when you wake up early.”
“You’re annoying all the time, but I don’t say anything, do I?”
“I can see it on your face,” said Levi, and turned back to Eren. “Did you shift yesterday?”
“Yes, sir,” Eren nodded. “We were testing triggers.”
“How many times did you shift?”
“Um….two, maybe?”
“It was so exciting!” Hange enthused. “I’d assumed it was a one time only thing, but no! He can do it at least twice in a row!”
“And then falls dangerously ill,” Levi pointed out.
“Well, yeah, but it’s still cool!”
Eren rubbed the back of his neck. “Maybe if I build my endurance, I’ll get better?”
“No,” said Levi, at the same time Hange said “Yes!!!”
They stared at each other.
“He does not need to be building any endurance with this,” Levi argued. “We shouldn’t be encouraging him to use his power.”
“Are you kidding?! We’ve practically got a tank on our hands,” Hange disagreed. “Is this because he got sick?”
“No,” Levi lied. “It’s a threat to the camp if we keep letting him train like this.”
“It’s not a threat to anyone,” Hange said breezily. “You’re just worried he’ll get ill again.”
“And you don’t think he will?”
“Oh, he probably will,” Hange sighed, looking at Eren sadly. “It’s an unnatural power to have. It doesn’t work well with his human body.”
“So why are we making him do it?” Levi challenged. “It’s no help to us if we can’t control it, and we can’t control it if it doesn’t ‘agree with him’ or whatever you just said.”
“Erwin said-“
“You’re right, this is Erwin’s idea.” Levi looked at Eren, still shiny with sweat, red under-eyes beginning to swell at little, seemingly shrinking into the bed. He was no tank.
He was a kid.
“We can’t go on like this,” Levi said decisively. “Come with me, Yeager.”
Perhaps if Levi had thought it through, he wouldn’t be walking at a snail’s pace through the corridor to allow Eren to tail him. The boy was probably still too sick to be up and about, but some things just can’t wait. Things like saving people’s lives, and by people, Levi meant Eren himself.
Eren was obviously not able to maintain his powers for any length of time, and there was no way Erwin would be convinced to let him stop using them. Why else had they allowed Eren into the scouts? He was there to shift into a titan, be studied, and help them win. End of story. The only problem was, if Eren wasn’t able to shift as many times as necessary, not only would they end up with a teenage corpse on their hands, they would also lose all advantage over the enemy.
Or, that’s how Levi was going to pitch it to the Commander, anyway.
“So you’re telling me,” Erwin recapped, “Yeager is potentially able to transform more than once a day, but his body physically cannot take it.”
“Correct,” said Levi. He put a hand on Eren’s shoulder in what he hoped felt like solidarity. “Don’t say anything, I know what I’m doing,” he whispered. Eren nodded and did his best to stand up straight.
“And what do you propose we do about this?”
“Improve Yeager…..sir.”
Erwin raised an eyebrow. He leaned forward to meet Levi’s eyes properly. “I thought you hated this idea.”
Levi rolled his eyes. “That was before.”
“Before what?”
“Before I realised the extent of his potential.”
“This is out of character for you, Levi,” Erwin commented. “You hate experiments, and you hate cadets.”
“I hate titans, too,” Levi supplied.
“Of course. How could I forget. Well, Yeager’s one of those, too. What exactly are you asking for?”
Eren wobbled slightly from his tight posture. Levi winced and tried to support him using his shoulder.
“He’s been sick,” Levi said in explanation, giving up on subtlety and wrapping an arm under Eren’s shoulders. “He shouldn’t really be out of bed.”
“Ahhhh,” Erwin said, like he suddenly understood everything. “So you’ve adopted another child. I see.”
“I have not adopted him,” Levi snarked. “Nor have I adopted anyone else. I’m here to present a tactical-“
“You may do as you wish, Levi,” Erwin interrupted. “Feed him caviar or remove him from central training. Do what you like. Just make sure everything appears correct to the higher-ups, understood?"
"I will be doing almost none of those things, but yes, understood."
It wasn’t until Eren was shoved unceremoniously back into bed that he seemed to process what was happening. Levi and Hange were deep in discussion over what constituted a nutritious diet when he finally spoke up.
“Are you taking me out of training, Captain?”
“No.”
“Are you…making me do more?”
“Also no.”
“Then why-“
“If you’re going to wield such immense powers, you should at least be supported to do so,” Levi told him.
“What does that-“
“He’s going to feed you meat, Eren! Meat!!” Hange beamed. “Aren’t you lucky?!”
“Meat? But why?”
“’Why, Captain Levi?’,” Levi corrected.
“Oh, yes, sorry sir. Why, Captain Levi?”
“Meat is protein, protein is what makes muscle mass.”
“Or so he’s told,” Hange giggled. “I don’t know if I believe all that.”
“Don’t be ridiculous, it’s been proved,” Levi argued. “Bread for energy, meat for muscle, vegetables for digestion-“
“Alright, alright, whatever,” Hange laughed. “I’m only teasing!”
“So, you want me to … get strong?” Eren asked, amazed.
“Something like that,” said Levi. “No more midnight fevers from shifting, at least.”
“I still get to train, then?” Eren insisted, eyes shining a little.
“Of course. You’re not getting special treatment, Yeager.”
“He is,” Hange pointed out.
“Have you ever heard of the difference between equity and equality?” Levi asked them. “I’m just giving him what he needs.”
“What a responsible father you are,” Hange teased.
“Still not a father,” Levi said. “Have never been, will never be.”
“I think you’d be a good father, Captain Levi,” Eren offered.
“See? Eren agrees!”
“Well, I don’t.”
Eren opened his mouth to argue, but Levi’s glare silenced him.
“Here’s what we’re going to do,” Levi began, writing something on the paper Hange had produced from god-knows-where. “We’re going to put you back into the bunks with the rest of the boys-“
“Yippee,” Eren monotoned. “I love sharing rooms with Jean.”
“You’re also sharing with Arlert,” Levi reminded him.
Eren perked up at that. “Oh yeah! I get to see Armin!”
“What it is to be young and still have friends…” Hange said wistfully, earning them an elbow to the ribs from Levi. “Hey! What was that for!”
“For being weird,” Levi said, like it was obvious. “As I was saying-“
“New diet plan!” Hange chirped. Levi glared at them, but they ignored it. “You get meat!!”
“Everyone gets meat,” Levi told them. “Eren just gets it a little more now.”
“Thank you, Captain!” Eren enthused.
“This is for the good of the Corps.”
“I know!” Eren didn’t stop smiling at the reminder. “I’m gonna do my best, sir!”
“I don’t know why you’re so happy, I’m taking away your excuses to get out of work,” Levi pointed out. “But, anyway. You’re still sick so you’re excused for today.”
“Yes, sir!”
“Come to my quarters after training finishes today, I have some stuff for you.”
“He means tea,” Hange stage-whispered.
“Healing tea,” Levi specified. “Just remember to come along. I’ve got shit to do now, so..”
“Of course, thank you Captain!”
Eren looked unreasonably happy, Levi thought as he made his way back down the hall in step with Hange. Maybe it was because he would see his friends again soon. Maybe he just really liked meat or something.
“That kid loves you,” Hange said, skipping along. “You’re such a great dad!!”
“If you say that again, I’ll skin you alive.”
“Awww, is someone shy~”
“Count your days.”

"SUICIDES END A PRISON RIOT," The Mercury (Manhattan, Kansas). October 4, 1929. Page 1. ---- COLORADO UPRISING ONE OF BLOODIEST IN THE NATION'S HISTORY ---- RINGLEADERS SUICIDE ---- Revolt Leases in Its Wake a List of 12 Known Dead and Many Wounded Some of Whom May Die Guards Killed in Cold Blood ---- Canon City, Colo, Oct. 1 (AP) - Due of the bloodiest prison mutinies in the nation's history came to an end at dawn this morning with the suicide of four leaders of the rebellion in the Colorado stare penitentiary.
The mutiny left in its wake list of 12 known dead and many wounded, some of who may die.
Four ringleaders of the mutiny barricaded with more than 150 other convicts in cell house No. 3, surrounded by troops, police and prison guards, and hopelessly outmumbered, first killed a wounded comrade and then fired bullets into their own brain.
The other convicts then surrendered and were marched out of the cell house just at sunrise. Four of the dead were prison guards, disarmed and slaughtered in cold blood inside the cell house, to emphasize the convicts' demand for unmolested freedom. Warden, Crawford, who declined all offer in parley with the embattled prisoners was himself wounded during one of the attacks on the cell block.
Dynamite Used National guard troops and police details from four Colorado cities fired more than 7.000 rounds of ammunition into the convict stronghold during the night. The battle was marked be the attempt to dynamite the cell house wall, one blast breaking all the windows but failing to effect a breach in the masonry.
The hero of the dynamiting attempts was a Catholic priest Father Patrick O'Neill, who carried the bombs to the foot of the cell house wall, under cover of machine gun fire from the prison walls.
In all seven prison guards were killed, three al the outbreak of rioting Thursday morning and four more during the night.
Those killed in the early rioting were Roy Brown, Walter Rinker and Elmer G. Erwin.
Those slaughtered in the cell house were John J. Ettes. Robert A. Wiggins, Charles Shepherd and John W. McClelland.
The convicts dead included Danny Daniels, who led the rioting, and acted as executioner of the guards; Charles Davis. A. Η Davis, George (Red) Riley and James Pardue.
Killed by Comrade Pardue was wounded in the abdomen during the early rioting.
He was removed to cell house No. 3 by the other convicts. He was found this morning with a bullet through his head, fired by one of the other convicts to end his suffering.
Three of the other ring leaders were found dead in the same cell, powder burns on their temples bearing mute testimony to shots fired at close range. The body of Daniels was in the doorway crawled half in and half out of the cell.
The floor of the cell house, which host night served as the execution chamber of four unarmed guards, was slippery with blood. The bodies of Charles Shepherd and John W. Clelland, two of the slain guards were found in the cell house, found hand and foot. Both had been shot through the head.
Close estimates is the time of the suicides the riot leaders at 4 a. m. but was not until an hour and a half later, at daybreak when O. E. Karl, one of the surviving guards, made his way to the prison yard, that the attacking forces learned of the fact, entered the cell house and rounded up the prisoners.
Afraid to Leave Earl said he was afraid to leave the cell house until daylight, for fear of being mistaken for a convict and shot by the watchers on the walls. With him in the cell house were John Pease and Lawrence Roche, who escaped the fury of the convicts, Roche's sister Josephine, secretary Crawford, had to remained at the prison all night, fearing each to see her brother's bullet body tossed out of a window the cell house, as the bodies Elles and Wiggins were tossed out.
Giving her brother up for she had left the prison shortly before daylight. When she learned that he was alive, she collapsed.
Gutted by fire, which destroyed the dining room and chapel and two of the cell houses and scarred by machine gun bullets and dynamite, the prison yard this morning was utter ruin.
One of Guards Mad Marvin Duncan, one of the guards in the cell house, was carried to a hospital this morning stark mad from terror. He was found locked in a cell and it was necessary to take off the door to get him out. He was at first thought to he dead, but examination revealed he was not even wounded. He saw Elles, prison hangman, shot down and saw his body tossed out of the cell house window.
He stood by while "Danty" Daniels asked Abe Wiggins, another guard if he had said his prayers.
"Yes," Wiggins replied without of emotion. "Where do you want me to stand"
He heard Daniels say "right where you are." and saw a bullet fired through Wiggins' head.
He heard Daniels tell John Shea, another guard, to take Wiggins body out to the warden, and fell him that Marvin Duncan would be the next guard to die.
That was at 9:30 o'clock. From then until he lost his mind, he expected each moment to be his last. Prison physicians said his condition resembled shell shock.
Warden Crawford today estimated the damage to the penitentiary at between $300,000 and $400,000. All the cell blocks except No. 3, in which the mutinous convicts were barricaded, were destroyed by fire, and number three is badly damaged, he said.

Eerste steenlegging bouw waterstation Cornelis Kondre
Tumblr media
Read the full article

That is random but I love it haha. Also I’m always happy to answer questions for the whole cast!! It was fun to think about what they’d do :)
Eddie: "What!? What the fuck. How did you turn into a dog!?" They look over you in worry. "Are you okay? Don't worry I'll fix this just hold on okay?"
When you unconcernedly start to try and get pets and cuddles from them, they eventually give in with a smile.
"Okay," they sigh. "You are a very cute dog. I'll give you some pats now, but I'm going to fix this alright?"
Gil: "MC..." he falls to his knees in shock at the sight of you as a dog. "How could this have happened? I swore to look out for you and yet..." he slams the ground with one fist. "Dammit! I-"
You nudge his fist with your nose.
"What? You want to be petted?" When you bark in response he nods solemnly, hugging you close to his chest. "Don't worry," he bites back tears. "I'll give you all the pets you want. I'll make sure you're happiest dog alive, until we can turn you back."
Ernestine: (assuming you're in a relationship) Once the initial surprise wears off she decides to have fun with the situation. She lovingly indulges you in pets and cuddles for a while. Then she pulls out a collar and leash.
"I've never had a pet dog before... can I walk you around? We can stop whenever you want, I promise," she murmurs feverishly, her eyes sparkling with excitement.
How that continues is up to you lmao depending on whether you'd agree or not.
(otherwise) She'll give you lots of pets and cuddles, laughing at your antics. Not that concerned, finds the situation interesting more than anything. People turning into animals is a thing that happens in her world.
Otto: She pats your head, looking at you in amusement. "So you're a dog now huh?"
Seeing that you're taking it fine, she'd be the most chill about it out of everyone. Just sits back and relaxes with you, watching cartoons while petting you. If you were freaking out though, her protective mode would be activated.
Lemon Sorbet: "Ooh, how exciting!" He immediately starts to give you pets. "You can experience dog things! Would you like to go to a groomers? I'm sure it'd feel nice to have a wash and get your fur trimmed." He gasps. "Oh, what about a doggy massage? Bark once for yes, and twice for no!" Already, he's planning ways that you can make the most out of your experience of being a dog.
Irma: "Oh my, what's happened to you?" She's concerned when she learns what’s happened and do whatever she can to help find a way to turn you back.
Will definitely be making inquiries at the University about what the hell they’re teaching that gets students turned into dogs.
But in the meantime will give you lots of love and attention.
Acker: He comes up to you conspiratorially, and looks side to side to check that no one's looking. When he's assured the coast is clear, he takes an expensive dog treat out from an inside pocket of his jacket.
You give him the best 'really?' expression you can muster up.
"My apologies. I wasn't sure if your tastes had changed." He stiffly pats you on the head.
Earnhart: When you come up to her for pets and cuddles, she says "I'm glad you're taking this well." Takes a bunch of pictures and videos of you running around and playing.
Later you hear her muttering about entering you in an agility contest.
Erwin: He barks at you in a friendly way, but feels a bit confused because 'who's this dog that smells exactly like MC?' But he's quick to accept you as a new friend and will run around playing with you when he's not doing his guard dog duties.

Hi! Sorry in advance for this long request. I was wondering if I could request a story where levi and reader have been in a relationship for over a year. Reader is also a squad leader in the scouts. She finds out that she’s pregnant and is so happy about the news and goes to tell levi excitedly. However, once levi finds out he isn’t as happy as the reader hoped he would be. He doesn’t think he deserves to have a child given his rough upbringing (never met his father, kenny raised him to be a killer, etc) and especially doesn’t want to bring a child into a world filled with titans where survival is always questionable. Levi tells reader to get rid of the child but she fights back and tells him of the future they could have together: having a big family and a beautiful house, etc. Things spiral out of control and a huge argument leads to them breaking up. They grow distant over the coming weeks and begin avoiding each other. One night reader tries to reach out to levi again but he is still adamant about his choice. The next day reader goes to erwin and resigns from the scouts without telling levi and moves away to a small village to raise the child. A year or so passes and the reader has given birth and has been raising the child on her own until one day titans break the wall and start attacking her village. The scouts urgently rush to the village (unbeknownst that the reader and child is there) and quickly eliminate the titans. In the end, one of levis squad members sees the reader being rushed to the infirmary (critical condition but alive) with the child beside her. When levi hears of this, he rushes after her to find her awake and now safe with a child that looks so much like him. They make up and levi decides to be there for both reader and the child and do right by them by trying to be the best father he could think of. (Sorry again for the super long request. Kinda got lost in my thoughts. Love your writing!!)
Thank you for your beautiful request, I really enjoyed writing this one 🥺✨. Sorry it took so long! I hope you like it :) (I like it when you guys send in long requests, that way I can make sure I stick to your ideas as close as possible!)
Word Count: 6131
‘I have to train my cadets’, you smiled at Levi, ‘And you need to go over some of those reports’. You pointed at the files that were neatly stacked on his desk. Levi rolled his eyes, ‘Tch, I guess you’re right. I’ll never hear the end of it if I don’t read those reports by tonight’. Levi sat down behind his desk, looking at the reports in front of him. ‘Hange will kill you’, you smirked at your boyfriend, ‘She’s been dying to discuss Eren’s progress with you’. Levi sighed in response, ‘Ai, Hange’s been driving me crazy. She walked up to me when I was taking a piss. She didn’t even notice, talking about those damn Titans’, Levi looked up at you with his cold stare.
You giggled. You knew how Hange could be. She was a bit intrusive, but that’s who she was. She was passionate, and not afraid to express herself. You’d always admired her for that.
‘I need to go, my cadets are probably waiting’, you headed over to Levi’s desk, leaning over it to give him a quick kiss, ‘Love you’. ‘Love you too’, Levi replied softly while browsing through the reports.
The two of you started dating a little over a year ago, but he didn’t say stuff like that until recently. You did though, all the time, but you knew him. Levi always had a hard time opening up and showing his vulnerable side. You never minded it, he showed that he loved you in many other ways, but still… When Levi told you he loved you for the first time, you were happier than ever.
Levi woke up in the middle of the night, calling out your name. He had a nightmare where you died. When you explained to him that you were fine, that it was all just a dream, he told you how afraid he was to lose you, how much you meant to him and how much he loved you. It melted your heart when you heard him say it. His voice was still rough, his face nestled between your shoulders and neck, holding you tightly. You’ll never forget that moment.
---
‘Go on, keep running’, you smiled at Connie, ‘If you’re going to talk back, you need to face the consequences, like the man you are’, you smirked at him.
You suddenly felt nauseous, everything started to spin. Without any warning, you quickly turned around, throwing up on the ground.
‘H-huh?’, you could hear one of your cadets running towards you, ‘A-are you alright?’. ‘Y-yeah, I’m fine Armin, thank you’, you wiped your mouth with the back of your hand. You could feel your cadets looking at you, ‘Keep running everyone, I’m fine’, you swung with your arm behind you. ‘Armin, I’m not feeling well. I’m going to Hange, I’ll ask her to take over for me. In the meantime, make sure Yeager and Jean don’t kill each other’. You could hear them bickering behind you.
---
‘Y/N?’, you could hear Levi grunting out your name, ‘A-are you alright?’. You were hovering over the toilet in the bathroom that was attached to the room you shared with Levi. ‘I-I’m fine, I’m just sick’, you said before throwing up again. You could hear Levi’s footsteps approaching, ‘N-no please’, you held out your arm, signaling him to stay away, ‘I want to be alone right now’. ‘I’m taking you to a doctor’, Levi’s voice sounded worried. You’d been throwing up all week, you didn’t know what was going on. ‘N-no Levi, it’s just a –‘, ‘You’re throwing up, again. We’re going, whether you like it or not’.
You didn’t try to change his mind. Whenever Levi had made his decision, it was futile to try and change it. After you got dressed, Levi helped you in the carriage, taking you to the city to see a doctor.
‘I want to go alone’, you looked at Levi, who was already getting out of the carriage. ‘Why?’, he tilted his head. ‘I just want to go alone, I’m fine, really’, you hopped out of the carriage, ‘See? I’m fine’, you smiled. ‘Tch, I’ll wait here’. You could see he wasn’t happy, but you had the feeling you knew what was ‘wrong’ with you. You skipped your period, you had to throw up all the time, you felt these cramps in your abdomen, … You’d be lying if you said that it didn’t cross your mind.
---
You were pacing around in the cafeteria, unsure what to do. You couldn’t sleep, you couldn’t lay down next to Levi without breaking the news to him. You were happy, and excited, but you wanted to tell Levi tomorrow, after you had the chance to think about it. To let it all sink in. You were going to be a mother, Levi was going to be a father… You’d always wanted this, and even if the timing was a bit off, you were so grateful for this.
‘Levi?’, you slowly entered the room, the first rays of the sun were shining through the bedroom window. You’d stayed up all night, thinking about how to tell him. You decided to just go for it and tell him without hesitating. You were nervous, to say the least. ‘What’s wrong kid? You’ve been gone the whole night. You know I can’t sleep well when you’re not with me’, he slowly sat up, looking out of the window. ‘I’m sorry’, you carefully sat down next to him, ‘but I have to tell you something’. ‘What?’, Levi looked at you with his cold gaze, ‘Haven’t seen you smile like that in a long time’. You chuckled, ‘That’s because I’ve never been happier’, ‘I know, it must be great to have such an amazing boyfrie-‘, ‘Oh stop it!’, you softly pushed him, ‘I’m serious Levi, I need to tell you something’. ‘What?’, he frowned. ‘I’m pregnant’, you smiled at him, ‘We’re going to have a baby’, you sat down on his lap, wrapping your arms around his neck, ‘You’re going to be a dad’. ‘What?’, his voice sounded rough, eyes locked on yours. You desperately looked for any form of happiness on his face, but all you could see was a cold stare. ‘I-I’m pregnant’, you whispered while placing yourself next to him.
For a couple of minutes, there was complete silence. Your heart was shattered when you noticed how Levi didn’t share the same happiness as you. You knew he would be surprised, but you never expected him to react like this.
‘Are you going to keep it?’, Levi didn’t look at you. ‘What?’, you looked at him, a lump started to form in your throat. ‘Are you going to keep it?’, he repeated himself, still not looking at you. ‘Of course!’, you quickly replied, ‘Why would I get rid of it?’, it was getting harder not to cry. ‘Tch’, Levi gritted his teeth while getting out of bed, ‘Because I can’t be a dad Y/N, I just can’t’, he finally looked at you. ‘I don’t know how to, I never had one. You know I’m not cut out to be a father’. You didn’t respond, all you could feel was an overwhelming sensation of sadness, making it hard for you to breathe. You were frozen on the bed, just looking at your boyfriend yelling at you.
‘I-I don’t deserve this, I don’t deserve that kind of life. Everyone that has ever gotten close to me, they all..’, Levi looked at the ground, balling his fists, ‘And in this world… How can we raise a child in this cruel world?’. You could hear his voice break.
Normally, you wanted to comfort him whenever that happened but now… Well, you didn’t know what you felt, but you were angry and sad at the same time. You felt disappointed, but could you blame him? How could you expect him to be happy? You knew he never wanted this, but still… You thought that whenever you would get pregnant, he would be happy.
‘I won’t raise a kid in this cruel world, Y/N, I just won’t. I don’t want to worry if my kid will be the next meal of a filthy titan. I don’t want them to grow up behind these damn walls!, ‘What do you want?’, you said quietly, your voice never sounded so fragile. ‘I want you to get rid of it’, he whispered.
You couldn’t believe that Levi would say something like that. You just couldn’t.
‘You’re only thinking about the bad things, you always do!’, you got out of bed, arms firmly wrapped around your stomach. ‘We can leave the scouts, get a nice home. We can have a family Levi’, you sobbed, ‘We can have a nice, peaceful life. Just us, our kids…’. ‘Kids?’, Levi placed his hands in his hair, ‘Fuck Y/N! You’re already thinking about more when I just told you that I don’t want kids?’. ‘Don’t you have any empathy? This is also your child, you know that right?’, you walked over to him, ‘It’s not like I did this by myself!’. ‘You’re not keeping it, end of discussion’, Levi lowered his voice, eyes fixed on yours. ‘That’s not your decision. This is my body, I’m not killing our fucking child!’, you pushed him.
Levi didn’t react, instead, he kept looking at you with his cold gaze. ‘I can’t believe you’re acting like this. I thought you would be happy… But you’re just an emotionless piece of shit! I thought you were different, I thought you cared about me… but you would never say such things if you did’.
You looked at the man in front of you. Suddenly, he felt like a stranger. His crescent moon eyes didn’t seem as beautiful as they once did, they felt cold.
‘Say something!’, you pushed him again, causing him to take a step backward. Again, no response. ‘You’re a fucking coward. There’s no love inside that cold heart of yours. I was wrong to think that there was…’, you walked closer to him, ‘You truly are a monster’. ‘Enough’, Levi looked at the ground, ‘You’re calling me cold, heartless… But what about you? How can you be so selfish? How can you give birth to a child in a world like this? In a world where we're just meals for fucking Titans. In a world where no one can promise us a tomorrow. Look around you Y/N!’, Levi grabbed your arm, ‘How many of your cadets have died? How heartbroken were you? Can you imagine what their parents must’ve felt like?’, he waited for an answer, but you didn’t give him one. ‘Tch, you’re even agreeing with me…’, Levi let go of your arm, ‘You’re the cold and heartless one. You have no right to give birth to a child in this wo-‘, ‘Fuck you Levi’, you gritted through your teeth, ‘You are a piece of shit’, you turned around, walking towards the door. ‘I don’t want you near me ever again. You didn’t want this, us…’, you placed a hand on your stomach, looking at it.
You thought Levi would stop you, or at least try… but he didn’t.
‘You’re right Y/N, I never wanted that child, and I’ll never will’, he said barely loud enough for you to hear him. ‘Then you don’t want me either’, you whispered, hand already placed on the doorknob. ‘Ai, I guess so’, Levi sat back down on the bed, back facing towards you. ‘Fine’, you chuckled with tears in your eyes, ‘You’re going to die alone, you know that right? With not one person that cares about you. You’re just a miserable prick, wallowing in self-pity… I never thought you were a coward Levi, but you’ve proven me wrong today’.
And at that moment you truly did. You hated him, more than you could ever hate anyone. How could he act like this? He didn’t even try to talk about it… He made his decision from the moment you told him.
---
‘Oi Y/N’, Hange sat down next to you. You were sitting on the ground, sipping from your tea, while you watched your cadets train. ‘Hm?’, you looked at her.
Her ponytail seemed a little messier than usual, indicating that she’d been experimenting with Eren. She always started to pull on her hair when she got excited, causing you to smile every time.
‘I haven’t seen you with Levi in quite some time’, Hange looked at you, ‘Is everything alright? He seems even more distant than usual…’, she scratched the back of her head.
You hadn't told anyone other than Levi that you were pregnant. At first, when you thought Levi would be happy, you couldn’t wait to tell Hange, Erwin, your cadets,… But now, after everything, you just couldn’t.
You looked back at your cadets, letting out a deep sigh, ‘No, we’ve broken up’. ‘What?!’, Hange’s eyes widened, ‘B-but Levi… He would never get into a relationship if he didn’t think it would last…’. You closed your eyes. You missed Levi. You missed his scent, his voice, his touch,…
For the past few weeks, you’d been avoiding each other. Making sure you weren’t in the same room together. Even when Erwin held a meeting, Levi never showed up. Since Erwin didn’t mention it, you were sure Levi told Erwin that you weren’t together anymore. Still, you knew Levi told no one you were pregnant, otherwise, Erwin or Hange would’ve asked you about it.
‘Hange, Erwin needs you’, you widened your eyes, heart beating fast. It was Levi’s voice. For the first time in weeks, you heard his soft voice.
You wanted to smile, to be happy, because you missed his voice more than anything, but you couldn’t. There was no reason for you to smile. You kept your gaze locked on your cadets.
‘H-huh?’, Hange looked up to the Captain. Levi was staring at you, you could feel it. ‘A-ai, I’ll go’, Hange got up without saying anything. Levi didn’t move, you could feel his eyes burning in the back of your head. ‘What?’, you whispered, ‘You’ve been avoiding me for weeks, no need to stare at me now’.
You thought he would respond, that he would say something, even if it was just his familiar ‘tch’, but he didn’t. You could hear his footsteps disappearing in the distance. It all seemed so easy for him. It felt like he didn’t care, like he didn’t miss you at all.
‘Levi’, you yelled without thinking, without knowing why. You noticed you were suddenly standing, looking at Levi walking away. Levi stopped, he looked over his shoulder at you, ‘What?’. His voice sounded rough, unfamiliar. You widened your eyes, your nails were digging into the soft skin of your hands.
You could see Levi felt more tired than usual. The bags underneath his eyes revealed the lack of sleep, just like his voice revealed his sadness. You could see he missed you too.
‘C-can we talk tonight?’, you desperately asked. Levi shrugged his shoulders, but you could see he was relieved you’d asked. ‘Ai, I’ll see you after dinner’, and just like that Levi started walking again.
---
You slowly knocked on the door of his office. Unsure of what you were going to say, you’d hope Levi would start the conversation. A part of you thought he’d maybe changed his mind.
‘Who is it?’, ‘It’s me’, you softly replied while slowly opening his door. ‘Oh Y/N’, his crescent-shaped eyes were hanging low, ‘Sit down, please’, he gestured to the chair that was standing in front of his desk. ‘I don’t want to sit down’, you chuckled, ‘I’m not one of the cadets, I’m not a stranger Levi’.
You didn’t know why it was already hard to talk. You told yourself over and over again that you weren’t going to cry, but seeing how Levi treated you, it made you feel like you were nothing.
‘I never said you were a stranger’, his eyes finally met yours. You hated yourself for looking so weak and fragile. You knew Levi would see the pain in your eyes. You didn’t want that, you wanted to look strong, to show him you didn’t need him. ‘You’ve been treating me like one over the past few weeks’, a tear streamed down your cheek. ‘Please stop crying’, Levi got up from his desk and walked towards you, softly wiping the tear from your cheek. His touch made you shiver, you wanted more. You wanted everything to go back to the way it was. ‘Have you thought about it?’, you softly asked, eyes fixed on the ground, arms placed firmly around your stomach. Levi sighed, ‘Y/N I don’t know what to tell you… I miss you, I want you to be by my side again but…’. You chuckled, ‘You want me to get rid of our child, right?’, you took a step back. ‘You’re selfish for raising a child in this cruel world’, his voice broke through your little bubble of hope. ‘You haven’t changed your mind at all, have you?’, you said calmly. There was no point in yelling, no point in arguing. You made up your mind as well. Levi shook his head.
A minute passed. The two of you were just standing there, unable to look at each other. You let your eyes wander over the man you loved. You carefully took in every detail. The way his eyes were hanging low, the way his hands were hanging next to his body, the way his hair looked messy for once. A sad smile appeared on your face.
You carefully walked up to him, placing a soft kiss on his cheek, ‘It’s fine, you don’t have to feel bad. I know you do. You made your decision, but I made mine as well. I hope you’ll find happiness Levi, I really do’, you could hear your voice break. Without a warning you threw your arms around him, ‘I don’t know why you made this decision, why you decide to throw away this happiness… But I don’t blame you’, you sobbed into his shoulder. Hoping you’d remember this feeling, the feeling of his arms around your waist, his scent, … ‘I’ll see you around’, you whispered, before pulling away and walking out the door. You knew Levi wouldn’t respond, so you didn’t wait for one.
You didn’t sleep that night. You were too busy getting all your stuff into a suitcase. Even though you didn’t have much, the weight of the memories on your belongings made it hard for you to put them in that suitcase.
‘Erwin?’, you knocked on the Commander's door. ‘Ai, come in’, his voice sounded stern, like always. ‘I want to talk to you about something’, you kept standing in front of the door. ‘What’s wrong?’, Erwin walked towards you. ‘I’m leaving’, you looked at your Commander, your friend. ‘Leaving?’, Erwin frowned, ‘Ai, I’m resigning’. Erwin carefully grabbed both of your shoulders, ‘Y/N, I know your breakup with Levi must be tough, but you can’t le-‘, ‘I’m pregnant’, you interrupted him. Erwin widened his eyes, ‘From Levi?’, ‘Of course’, you chuckled, ‘B-but he doesn’t want the same’, you gritted your teeth. Erwin let out a deep sigh, ‘I’m sorry Y/N’, he pulled you close to him, ‘I hope you find your happiness elsewhere, you deserve it’.
You’d known Erwin for so long now. He’d seen you cry many times, but he never hugged you, not once. It caught you off guard, but it felt good to finally have some comfort, to finally tell someone.
‘Please, don’t tell anyone’, you sobbed, ‘I’m leaving tonight, I don’t want anyone to know’. ‘I won’t’, Erwin slowly let go of you, ‘Promise me you’ll take good care of yourself’.
---
‘Oi’, you quickly called your cadets to you after dinner. The sun was setting, your stuff was already sitting in a carriage. ‘What’s wrong Y/N?’, Sasha looked at you.
This was the hardest part. Saying goodbye to your cadets. They were like your children, you loved every single one of them.
‘I’m leaving’, you softly said. ‘W-what?!’, Jean immediately stepped up to you, ‘You can’t, we need you!’. ‘I don’t have a choice’, you looked at your cadets, you could see how surprised they were. ‘You always have one!’, Connie yelled. You smiled at their innocence, ‘I can’t raise a kid here, can I?’. ‘Y-you’re pregnant?’, Sasha looked at your stomach, you nodded. ‘W-what about Levi?’, Jean looked at the ground. ‘Levi’s staying here, you’ll be joining his squad. He’ll make sure nothing will happen to you’, you said sadly.
You made Erwin promise that your cadets joined Levi’s squad and that Levi would take care of them. You’d never forgive yourself if anything happened to one of your cadets.
‘I’ll miss you’, once again a lump had formed in your throat, ‘I need to go now, promise me you’ll be safe, I’ll never forgive myself if anything happened to one of you’.
---
Later that evening, Levi could hear one of your cadets talk about how they would miss you.
‘Miss her?’, Levi tilted his head, looking at Jean. ‘C-captain!’, Jean quickly saluted him, ‘What do you mean, you’re going to miss her?’. Jean looked confused at the Captain, ‘H-haven’t you heard? B-but she said we’ll be joining your squad and-‘, ‘What?’, Levi widened his eyes. ‘S-she left Captain, because she was pregnant. I-I thought you knew-‘, ‘Tch’, Levi balled his fists, ‘Where did she go?’. ‘No one knows’, Connie interrupted, ‘We’ve asked her, but she didn’t want to tell us’.
How could you leave without telling him? Without saying goodbye? Levi was angry, but more than that, he was sad. Without replying to the cadets, Levi turned around, immediately heading towards Erwin’s office.
Without knocking, Levi opened the Commander’s door, ‘Where did she go?’. Erwin was looking at Levi with his hands intertwined, lips resting against them. ‘I don’t know Levi’, ‘Don’t lie to me!’, Levi’s voice broke, ‘I know she told you, she always tells you shit like that. She always trusted you…’. ‘Levi, I don’t know’, Erwin said sternly, ‘B-but-‘, Levi could feel himself breaking down. The thought of never seeing you again made him nauseous, he needed you. ‘I’m sorry Levi’, Erwin sighed, ‘Everyone’s going to miss her’. ‘Tch’, Levi gritted his teeth, ‘You should’ve stopped he-‘, ‘No’, Erwin interrupted Levi, ‘You should’ve taken responsibility. I know you’re a complicated man, but don’t tell me that I should’ve stopped her when you’re the one that-‘, Erwin closed his eyes.
Erwin knew he shouldn’t say all those things, but he was mad at his friend. How could Levi act the way he did? To tell you to get rid of the child you both were responsible for?
Erwin quickly found his composure again, ‘She’ll be fine Levi’. ‘Did Hange knew?’, Levi looked with his cold gaze at Erwin, ‘Ai, we said our goodbyes this evening’. ‘So everyone knew, except for me?’, Levi raised his voice, ‘I’m afraid so’, Erwin stood up, ‘She made me promise you took care of her cadets’. Levi could feel his heart break, tears streaming down his face, ‘I know that you think I’m a coward, a monster even… But how can she raise a child in this cruel world Erwin? Don’t you think that’s selfish?’, ‘I think it’s brave’, Erwin smiled at his friend, ‘I don’t think you’re a monster Levi, I think you’re afraid’.
---
A year passed. You’d been living a quiet, peaceful life in a small village near the wall. After giving birth to a healthy, beautiful girl, you’d been raising her on your own. It wasn’t easy, but you managed. Not a day went by that you didn’t think of her father, of the scouts, Erwin, Hange,… You missed them. You missed the excitement, your cadets, you missed everything, but this is the life you needed to live now.
‘Amara’, you sighed, quickly grabbing the flower she was stuffing in her mouth, ‘You can’t eat something like this’. You picked her up from the ground, taking her back inside. ‘If you’re hungry, you can just tell me’, you smiled at her blue eyes. Her eyes were just the same as Levi’s. She had the same crescent-shaped blue eyes, you wished Levi could see her.
‘H-huh?’, you could hear a loud noise from outside, quickly followed by people screaming in fear. You looked out the window, adrenaline immediately pumping through your veins.
You never thought this would happen again, you never imagined something like this. You started to panic. You couldn’t defend yourself, you had no gear, no weapons. You knew the Corps would arrive quickly, but there wasn’t enough time to wait. Your house was too close to the wall, and on top of that, people were panicking, running across the streets,…
Another loud noise filled the air, your eyes widened in fear when you could see people getting crushed underneath the rocks that flew from the wall. ‘There’s no time’, you whispered to yourself. You could hear Amara crying in fear, you held her as close to you as you possibly could, ‘It’s alright, I’ll keep you safe’, you whispered to her, placing a kiss on her forehead before running outside.
There were Titans everywhere, the screams of people being torn apart, the cries of the children calling out for their mom or dad, it made you sick.
‘Where do we even run to’, you were panicking, you couldn’t help it. You used to be so calm, so rational before you had her, but now… Fear was crippling your mind. ‘Calm down’, you whispered to yourself, tightening your grip around Amara, holding her head in the space between your shoulder and neck. You didn’t want her to see this. ‘Levi was right, this world is cruel’, you could feel tears streaming down your cheek, ‘but that doesn’t mean I’ll let you grow up in fear Amara, I won’t’. You started running away from the hole in the wall.
---
‘Armin’, Levi’s squad was approaching the village, ‘You, Eren, and Mikasa, take care of the Titans outside the wall. The others will arrive shortly. ‘Ai, Captain!’, they quickly separated themselves from the others. ‘The rest of us will kill the ones inside the wall until the rest of the Corps arrives. I don’t want any casualties, understood?’.
It didn’t take long for them to kill most of the Titans.
Jean was standing on a rooftop with Sasha, ‘S-so many people and th-they’re all dead’, Jean was holding his blades, closing his eyes. ‘H-huh’, Sasha ran towards the end of the rooftop, ‘Jean!’, she pointed towards the ground. ‘What?’, Jean walked towards her. ‘T-that’s Y/N!’, Sasha immediately launched herself towards you, as did Jean.
‘Y/N!’, Sasha cried out your name. ‘You know her?’, one of the people that was sitting next to you on the carriage asked Sasha. ‘Ai’, Jean replied, ’That’s our former squad leader’. He widened his eyes, even when you were losing so much blood, even when you were barely conscious, he could see you holding your child close to you.  ‘She doesn’t want to give her to us’, one of the girls sitting next to you looked at Jean.
‘J-jean? Sasha?’, you grunted out, ‘A-are you really here or am I..’, ‘We’re here!’, Sasha quickly sat down next to you, holding your hand, ‘You’re going to be fine’. ‘Pl-please’, you looked at Amara, ‘Take her, keep her safe’. ‘B-but-‘, Sasha protested. ‘Please’, you looked at Sasha, ‘I know you can keep her safe, you did it before, remember the girl you saved?’, you coughed up some blood, ‘I-I don’t know if I’m going to-‘, you could feel tears streaming down your cheek, ‘Tell Levi that he needs to look out for her, please, her name’s Amara..’, you begged Sasha. Jean was trying not to cry, he always remembered you as being so strong.
Your cadets never saw you cry before, not even when Annie killed most of your squad.
‘I’ll keep her safe’, Sasha carefully took Amara from you. You could hear Amara crying out, calling out for you. ‘Y/N’, Jean was shaking, he could see you closing your eyes when Sasha took Amara from you. ‘Jean, we need to go to the Captain’, Sasha looked determined. ‘But there are still some Titans-‘, ‘Jean, I won’t let anything happen to her, we need to go to the Captain, now!’, Sasha launched herself in the air. Jean looked at you once more. ‘We’ll make sure she makes it’, the girl next to you smiled at Jean.
---
‘Captain!’, Sasha could see him standing on a rooftop, ‘Y/N! She’s here we-‘, ‘What?’, Levi immediately turned around to look at Sasha, widening his eyes in surprise, not even noticing the child Sasha was holding, ‘I-is she safe?’. ‘She’s being rushed to the infirmary’, Jean landed on the rooftop, ‘It didn’t look good Captain’, Jean closed his eyes. Suddenly, Levi could hear a child crying, calling out for her mom. ‘Ssh’, Sasha held the child closer. Levi looked at the girl that Sasha was holding. Sasha looked at the Captain with a certain determination in her eyes, ‘She made me promise I would keep her safe… That you would look out for Amara if she didn’t make –‘. ‘She’ll make it’, Levi interrupted Sasha, ‘I know she will’. ‘Here’, Sasha whispered while handing over Amara to Levi. ‘N-no I don’t know what to d-‘. ‘B-but she’s your daughter’, Sasha yelled at the Captain, ‘You need to take care of her! I promised Y/N you would!’, Sasha’s voice was shaking, ‘I promised you would keep her safe!’.
Levi closed his eyes. He could hear Erwin’s words in the back of his head, ‘You should’ve taken your responsibility’. He gritted his teeth together. He was nervous to see his child, to look her in her eyes.
‘I’m sorry’, Levi whispered, carefully taking Amara from Sasha without looking at his daughter, ‘Go to the others, join Hange’s squad, I’m going to the infirmary’.
When Sasha and Jean were gone, when he was left alone with Amara, he pulled her away from his shoulder, finally looking at his daughter. When he noticed her blue eyes, when he could see her looking at him, he wanted to cry. He never expected to feel like this, to feel this much love in his heart.
‘Amara, huh?’, a painful smile appeared on his face. ‘What have I done’, he whispered to himself, ‘I should’ve never let her leave, I should’ve been there for the two of you’, his hands were shaking, ‘I’m sorry’, he held her close to him, ‘I’m so sorry’.
---
Levi immediately rushed to the infirmary, keeping Amara close to him.
‘Where is she?’, he asked one of the nurses, ‘Who?’, the nurse looked uninterested, ‘We have a lot of new patients, with the events that happened today’. ‘Y/N’, Levi sighed, ‘You know who I am, you know whom I’m talking about’. The nurse smiled, ‘She’s been asking about you’. ‘S-she’s awake?’, Levi sighed in relief, ‘Ai, but she needs to rest’.
Levi followed the nurse.
‘This is her room’, the nurse pointed at the door. ‘What happened to her?’, Levi looked at the door, he wanted to buy some time. He needed to get his nerves under control. Levi didn’t want you to see how nervous he was. ‘She wanted to protect her’, the nurse pointed at Amara, ‘A titan stepped on a house she was hiding in, causing her to be crushed under the debris of stones. She threw herself on top of her child, making sure her child was safe from the stones that were falling. She suffers from a concussion, and several of her ribs are broken, as well as her leg and arm. She also suffered from internal bleeding, but we managed to stabilize her. She’s extremely lucky to be alive’. Levi closed his eyes, realizing it was supposed to be his duty as a father to keep the two of you safe. ‘Thank you’, he looked at the nurse. The nurse nodded in response and walked away.
Levi could feel Amara’s small hands tugging on his shirt, letting out deep, slow breaths. He smiled at the feeling of her tiny hands.
‘Hm, you’re sleeping? You’re just like your mother, always sleeping at the worst possible times’, Levi chuckled.
He could remember how you could fall asleep almost anywhere except your bed. He could still see you lying with your head on the table during one of Erwin’s meetings, or on the ground when your cadets were training. He’d always loved the sight of you sleeping, you looked so peaceful.
Levi slowly opened the door, hands still shaking. He could see you lying in bed, looking out the window, ‘Nurse, have you maybe seen the girl that I gave Amara t-‘, ‘Tch’, Levi smiled. You quickly looked at him, eyes immediately tearing up when you saw he was holding Amara, when you could see they both were okay. ‘Levi!’, you wanted to get out of bed, to run towards the two of them, but you couldn’t. ‘A-are they safe?’, you quietly asked while Levi was sitting next to your bed. ‘Ai, all of your cadets, they’re all safe’, he whispered, ‘Erwin made me promise’, Levi looked at you. He could see how broken your body was, how many bruises you had, how many wounds, … He hated to see you like this.
You couldn’t stop smiling. You always imagined what Levi would look like while holding her. Seeing Amara sleeping on his shoulder, holding her arms around his neck, … You wished the moment would never pass.
‘Thank you’, you whispered, ‘I’ll take her back, I’m sorry I let Sasha take her to you, I thought I wasn’t going to make it’, you lowered your eyes. ‘N-no it’s fine’, Levi responded, tightening his grip around Amara, ‘I-I don’t mind’.
He didn’t want to let go of her, he wanted to hold her like that forever.
‘No, really’, you smiled, ‘I know you never wanted this, you don’t have to pretend’. ‘I’m not pretending’, Levi looked at the ground, ‘From the moment I held her, the moment I looked into her eyes I-‘, Levi’s gaze met yours, ‘I hate myself for the decision I’ve made’. ‘But-‘, you tried to reply, but he interrupted you. ‘I know what I’ve said, and I was right, this world is cruel… But after what happened today… I should’ve been there to protect my girls’. ‘Your girls?’, you chuckled. Levi smiled in response, ‘If you’ll have me, of course’. ‘Levi, I don’t kn-‘, ‘I want to be there for the two of you Y/N. Ever since you left the Corps… I thought I would never see you again. I’ve been searching for you everywhere. Not a day went by that I didn’t think of you, of our child. I regretted my decision long before today’, his voice sounded rough but honest, ‘Please, forgive me’, he clenched his jaw, ‘I know I’m not perfect, I know I’ll make mistakes. I never had a father, I don’t know how to be one, but I’ll try, I’ll try with everything I’ve got’.
Words failed you. Even if you could talk, if the lump in your throat didn’t make it impossible, you’d still wouldn’t know what to say. This was all you’ve ever wanted.
‘Y/N?’, Levi looked at you, eyes desperately searching to meet yours. You were looking at Amara, smiling. ‘Only if I can be a squad leader again, I can’t take this boring life any more Levi. I can’t stand to be stuck between four walls every single moment of the day’, you desperately looked at him. ‘Y/N that’s unreasonable-‘, ‘No, she can grow up with us in the Survey Corps. All my cadets, they’ll take care of her, we’ll take care of her, Erwin, Hange…. She’ll never be alone, she’ll be loved by everyone. I saw the way Sasha held her, she would’ve protected Amara with her life. Besides, our home’s been crushed, there’s nothing left of it anyway’, you sighed at the thought.
Levi stood up from the chair, sitting down beside you on the bed.
‘We’ll discuss it some other time, but for now, you need to rest’, he placed a soft kiss on your cheek, while carefully laying Amara next to you. Amara didn’t wake up, instead, she nestled herself in your free arm, curling up against your chest. ‘Thank you’, you whispered. Levi stood back up, but you carefully grabbed his hand, trying not to move too much. You didn’t want to wake up Amara. ‘Please, stay’, your eyes were begging him, ‘Your cadets, they’re probably with Hange, right? You can stay, please, I’ve missed you’.
Levi carefully laid down next to Amara, placing his arm around the two of you. He felt a warmth inside his heart he never felt before.
‘My girls’, he whispered before closing his eyes, ‘I’ll never let anything happen to the two of you ever again’.
---
Another year passed, and you were sitting with Levi, Erwin, and Hange outside, drinking a cup of tea in the sun.
‘Amara!’, you could hear Sasha running after her, ‘That’s my potato!’.
Since Amara started to walk, she’d become a real menace, always running away, grabbing stuff she shouldn’t…
You looked at Levi, his eyes were hanging low, smiling at the sight of Amara running with the potato in her tiny hands, ‘She’s just like you’, Levi looked at you, ‘You’re always stealing my shit too’. ‘Hey, that’s not tru-‘, ‘Whose shirt are you wearing?’, Levi smirked while taking a sip from his tea. You could feel your cheeks getting red, Hange and Erwin were smiling too. ‘Oi Y/N, don’t worry’, Hange slapped your back, ‘Aunt Hange will save the day!’. She stood up from the table, running towards Sasha and Amara, ‘Oi Sasha! I’ll give you a new potato!’.

Yandere Valentines
Tumblr media
Kamado Tanjiro student AU- All throughout the day he watches as you give out your obligatory candies to the classes and teachers you like. He tries to not stare whenever you dig into your extra bag.
“Tan-Ji-Ro! Nobody’s given me Valentine's Day chocolate yet! Tanjiro, are you listening?”
“I am and I already gave you one for friendship.”
“It’s not the saaaaaammammeee!!!”
“If you want MY sweet choco-lats then I will give you one as my minion.”
“But it's not the same as getting it from a girlllllllllllllllll!!!!!”
He tried to drown out their banter as he watched you hand over a chocolate to your teacher. He wished that could be him.
All throughout the day he silently prayed you’d come over and flash your smile before lightly grazing his hand as you gave him his chocolate. He both loved and hated how you bashfully looked away while the recipient thanked you. You just seemed to be completely ignoring him now and it almost seemed like you wanted to make him jealous. But he kept his cool, fighting off the urge to sulk as he zoned out of Inosuke’s gloating and Zenitsu’s whining. Wait this smell its-
“U-uhm e-excuse me!”
He turned to hear that angelic voice.
“Yes?”
“H-here,” you dropped a bag decorated with a light pink with black floral accents. “Thats for Nezuko-”
His spirit that was lifted so high just dropped and he felt like throwing up.
“Thanks.” Tanjiro tried to leave before his mask slipped and he just started crying.
“W-wait, please.” The warm shy tug on his sleeve made him stop in his tracks. He turned to you again, energized by your touch his spark was back.
“Uhm, here you go. Uh happy Valentine's day!” You pushed three pouches into his stomach before running away. Catching it fast enough to feel your hand he looked to see three pouches with his name, Inosuke’s, and Zenitsus’s. Even with the unforeseen others he was on Cloud 9.
You actually thought of him, you really are destined to be with him.
Tumblr media
Levi Ackerman- “Oi what's this?” You had placed some weird brown thing in front of him; he was genuinely worried. Sensing this you giggled. “It’s from where I’m from, it's called chocolate. You're supposed to give it on Valentine's Day.”
He gave you a look, he didn’t want to ask but he wanted to know.
“It's a day that celebrates love. You give chocolate to people you like.”
His gaze sharpened and you turned to leave out the door. “Platonically or romantically, (Y/n)? This isn’t something you can say to a man and not have him react.” Met with another laugh, he snarled at you.
“SPECIAL FORCE (Y/-”
“Both man, it's both. You always get so wound up.”
Getting quieter as you left his room he still caught it. You say that like the whole squadron isn’t drooling over you. He finished his written tasks all the while stealing glances at the mysterious and menacing gift you left. Deciding its haunting was too much he decided training his cadets was a good tradition.
Leaving his office only served to make this ‘chocolate’ more elusive as he saw different cadets munching on something brown.
“AAAAHHHHH! It's like heaven condensed treasure for your mouth only the god/goddess could provide!!!!”
“Sasha get hold of yourself!”
“She’s not wrong, this is truly a delight. I’ve never-”
“Whhooo if they can cook this I’m marrying them!”
“You want to marry them because they can make this?”
“Not before me.”
Even Erwin was indulging in the treat almost looking like he’d cry. He was sort of worried you drugged this or something. His last stop was to see Hange’s reaction to all this: she was in love. Half was missing but the rest was being dissected by the scientist who seemed as though she reached an epiphany.
“This! This is the future and it needs to happen now!”
Procrastination would get him nowhere so he settled back into his office and finally took hold of the melting square dropping it onto his mouth.
It was sweet and bitter like you. It melted and became malleable and a wonderful feeling fell down his throat. Like he wishes you would. He touches his mouth as though it were still waiting to be dropped and couldn’t help licking his fingers. That sweet bitterness, he couldn’t but picture you. Licking you off his fingers. Licking you off his fingers.
It was bound to happen, he would make sure of it.
Bonus~~~
Tumblr media
Takami Keigo-”HERE!” You threw it at his face, you didn’t care if he got it. You looked down on the city you were levitating above. You hated this chicken. He was such a player/perfect boy/annoying bird. Everything about him infuriated you. What’s worse, your darling friend wanted you to deliver her Valentine's Day gift to him. You just wanted to make sure he knows this wasn’t from you.
“It's not from me. It's from Toyue.”
“You…you gave me…A VALENTINES GIFT!”
“IT’S NOT FROM ME!”
“MY DOVE GAVE ME A GIFT!”
He just wasn’t listening and you couldn’t take it anymore. You decided flying back home could hopefully help him wise up. Instead while you try to enjoy the air whipping in your face, the faint warm breath proved that he just decided to follow you.
“LEAVE ME ALONE!”
“NO WAY! WHAT KIND OF MATE WOULD I BE IF I LET YOU SPEND THE NIGHT ALONE.”
“UGGHGH YOUR DISGUSTING!”
“I LOVE YOU MY DOVE!”
Happy Valentines You Guys!!!
Love ya
when it came to the chocolate i don't remember if they had that or not but whatever
im not watching the newest episodes until im emotionally ready plz no spoilers
anyway have a wonderful day

I woke up this morning to more asks than I have ever gotten in one sitting, and it was such a cool surprise so thank you guys!!! This was literally so much fun! All asks & answers are below the cut because I didn’t want to spam the dashboard with my long responses haha.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
@mangosimoothie these are all some great questions and thank you for that!!
5. Do they have any tattoos? If so what are they and do they have any special meaning?
Zoe doesn’t have any tattoos yet, but she has always wanted one! She just doesn’t know what she’d get and would be like “It’s got to be perfect if it’s going to be on my body forever!” But Erwin has one very minimalist medium-sized sunset tattoo on his right shoulder blade (kind of like this). He got it on his 18th birthday, it was something he and his sister always wanted to get together!
7. Do they have any unusual fears?
I wouldn’t say they’re unusual fears, but Erwin is very scared of small spaces and Zoe is scared of geese because of a bad run-in she had with a goose on the Kindergarten playground lol.
11. Do they have any addictions?
Zoe doesn’t have any addictions! She’s a meticulous person who is very health-conscious and her mom was a great example who showed her how to set healthy boundaries and limits. Erwin on the other hand is a different story! Erwin smokes cigarettes (something he picked up from his older sister Maggie, it really started as a way to feel closer to her after she went missing and has turned into a stress coping mechanism). Plus, he has an unhealthy dependence on caffeine. The man has been known to go through a pot of coffee all on his own, he doesn’t even care about taste. He’s poured energy drinks in coffee before (gross, I know). He just... doesn’t sleep well.
Even though it was definitely a challenge to choose between my pixel children, I think the Top 5 sims I’ve made are:
The whole Carter family, but especially Caleb. He is truly cathartic for me to play and write.
My version of Alexander Goth (really he’s my son, EA can take Alexander Goth from my cold dead hands, they have never done that boy justice!!)
All my Strangerville sims, but Tashia and Junia would be tied for third because I have no other sims like them. They challenge me!
Sha West (I’ll be posting her later, she is from one of my private saves where I’m doing the globetrotter challenge for fun and I loveeee her).
Rin and Lazlo Fite (twins so they count as one lmao. They were originally just submissions for another simblr, but I fell in love with them and their backstory!)
This was even harder!! I follow a LOT of simblrs. But my current top 5 sims from other simblrs are:
The entirety of Gen 3 (Asa, Finn, Casper, Stevie, Elaine, Jada) from Frozen Pines by @softpine. I cannot pick between these babies, they all have my heart equally.
The entire Halabi family, but especially Gus (and Lena) by @sojutrait
Lucas Munch by @gunthermunch
Izara Ali by @acuar-io
Pheebs by @softerhaze
Honorable mention to River and Ro from Inheritance by @cyberth0t! My old ass was around when this was a sims story, but now it’s an awesome webtoon here!!
Tumblr media
Lol I love that. Crush away, anon.
2. Do they wear perfume/cologne? If so what scents do they prefer?
Erwin doesn’t wear a cologne really unless he’s going out! But Erwin always smells fresh - like a light, clean ivory soap smell mixed with his laundry detergent and a warm mix of light bergamot, jasmine and lemon. Fresh and pleasantly light is literally the only way I can think to describe it ajajksdjkasjgs sorry hope that makes sense! Although he does smoke cigarettes, he never smells overwhelmingly like smoke (it’s just barely present!).
6. If they were badly injured, and for whatever reason couldn't go to a hospital, who would they go to for help?
Erwin is stubborn and kind of a loner, he would probably patch himself up in most circumstance. But he’d have to have a deep bond with someone to let them see him in pain/vulnerable like that!
16. Do they have or want kids?
He does not have kids! As for wanting kids, he’d say no. But really he just doesn’t think he’ll ever have the opportunity to have kids. He doesn’t dislike the idea at all, but definitely isn’t in a place for kids right now! In the future though? He’d be lying if he said he hadn’t thought about that...
29. If they were real would you be friends with them?
Hmmmmm I can’t say for sure. Current Erwin? Probably not, we live very different lives! But future Erwin and I would probably get along very well!
Tumblr media
19. How easy is it to become their friend?
It is not easy to gain Junia’s trust in any way lmao. Friend, romantic partner, work associate... doesn’t matter to her. She keeps things pretty distant and professional across the board. But if you break through? Dear God, she will love you and protect you fiercely.
Tumblr media
@missjinglecoco thank you for these questions! <3
1. Do they have any crafting hobbies?
Erwin likes to take polaroid photos just for personal enjoyment! I wouldn’t say he scrapbooks, but he likes to do a *version* of that by journaling with polaroids...so scrapbooking without the stickers and fun paper lol. He also runs a podcast about spooky stuff like unsolved mysteries, paranormal stories, and conspiracy theories!
12. Do they have any sense of style? Regardless of the answer do they believe they have a sense of style?
He absolutely has a very quirky sense of style, although he would say he just likes to wear stuff that he likes and isn’t intentionally curating a look. His style is vintage casual with an alternative touch - quirky patters, ripped loose jeans, lots of 70s-80s dad tees you’d find in a Goodwill.
33. Do they play ttrpgs? If so what kind of characters do they play? Or are they more likely to GM?
Yes! He hasn’t played since high school, but he loves Dungeons and Dragons. He typically plays as an elf wizard! He would love to be a DM/GM, but he’s never had the time to come up with and execute a campaign of his own creation.
Tumblr media
@chelseasanidiot Oh that’s my baby!!! My favorite!! Thank you for asking about him <3
3. Do they enjoy cooking?
YES! He loves cooking with his mom and his abuela! Cooking is a love language to him, and it’s a way he connects to his culture too. He’s the kind of person that is always offering food and to his friends and loved ones and sees it as a basic act of service - “We’re hanging out at my house, so I should give you a snack - just makes sense!”
4. Do they enjoy baking?
Not as much as cooking, but he does enjoy baking if it’s with Cheryl!
28. Are they a #gamer?
He loves lots of different games, but he would not call himself a #gamer lol. He doesn’t take games so seriously! His sister is much more competitive that him!
Tumblr media
Of course! <3
8. Do they collect anything? If so what and why?
She collects snow globes! Whenever she and her mom would go on vacation, she’d get a snow globe from that location as a souvenir.
9. When they're sick what do they do to feel better?
She is very productive, so she just doesn’t have time to lay around sick. She takes healing very serious - strict regiment of herbal teas, vitamin C supplements, rest, vapor rub (still using the same big pot of Vicks that probably is from the 90s), humidifier, soups, keeps a notepad with her medication rotation schedule...the works!
10. Do they have any regrets?
Nope!
42. Can they speak multiple languages? If yes which all do they speak and why?
She isn’t fluent in any languages outside of English. She only remembers a few words/phrases from high school French. She also would recognize a few words or phrases in Arabic from knowing Anwar and his family for so long.
43. Can they handle stressful situations?
Yes, she operates very efficiently under stress (and grief). She needs people to remind her that it’s okay to slow down and just... feel.
44. Who, if anyone, would they trust with their deepest secrets?
Anwar! He’s her closest friend since childhood and she’d trust him with her life. Eventually you guys will see her open up to more than just him though <3
45. Do they plan in advance or just wing it?
Plan in advance always. Just thinking of “winging it” makes her skin break out in hives lmao

Chapter 25: Vouchers and Children
Summary: Mikasa encounters the widow of a fallen comrade. Later that night, she tells Levi about the encounter.
Year 849 (9th Month – Week 3)
---
The afternoon sun starts to descend, sending red-orange streams of light through the open windows of the fortress as Mikasa walks down the hallway with a small storage box in one hand. As she turns a corner, she suddenly hears a frustrated yell.
“Finally! Took you long enough!”
The female captain pauses when she sees an elderly man storm out of a doorway at the far end of the hall. The man angrily stuffs a sealed envelope into his old satchel bag as he walks and turns left down the corridor leading to the exit.
Mikasa then makes her way to the doorway the man came out from. Upon entering, she sees Lyenne, Gelgar, Thomas, and Nifa seated at four desks – the first two are set up near the right side of the room and the other two on the left side.
“Rough day?” Mikasa prompts, seeing the tired and worn looks on their faces.
"You can say that," Gelgar says, folding his arms over his desk and resting his head on them. "Many of the claimants for today's schedule blew up at us. And many of them also broke down while we were issuing the vouchers," he then sighs heavily, his frown deepening, "Seeing those families in so much pain is always hard."
"I could sense that a lot of today's beneficiaries had pent-up frustration," Thomas remarks, leaning back heavily against his chair, "They're probably still processing their grief. So, when they came here, it all spilled over – and some expressed it through being angry and some through crying."
“Well, that’s understandable,” Lyenne says, rubbing her face wearily, “This batch of beneficiaries are family members of soldiers who died just a few months ago, so the grief is still pretty raw.”
“And collecting death benefits is just a reminder of their loss,” Nifa says, arranging the papers on her desk with a solemn look, “Even though the money is meant to help them, it’s hardly fair compensation for what they lost.”
Mikasa sighs. “No, it definitely isn’t.”
Every three months, the Survey Corps regularly doles out monetary vouchers to family beneficiaries of soldiers who had died in past expeditions. The Royal Treasury allocates budgets for death benefits but does not hand the actual money to any military branches. The government policy is that the regiments give out vouchers representing the monetary value of the pensions and benefits, which the beneficiaries can cash in at the banks. The vouchers are placed in sealed envelopes, with the names of the recipients and the names of the soldiers who passed written on them.
The task is never pleasant and always grim; many beneficiaries often make grief-driven outbursts during the collection process. However, Survey Corps soldiers who are assigned to hand out the vouchers never lash out or make any retort – they just accept the verbal abuse stoically, understanding that the pain of the families left behind is intensely great.
“Are you here to collect today’s unclaimed vouchers, Captain Mikasa?” Nifa asks, opening a drawer.
It's not uncommon for many vouchers to go unclaimed on the day they are scheduled to be released. Some beneficiaries cannot claim them due to circumstances such as their work schedules, illness, and the like. The Survey Corps retains all unclaimed vouchers from a specific schedule for safekeeping until the beneficiaries claim them.
“I am,” Mikasa nods, “Erwin told me to hand them over to him after he, Hange, and Levi return from Mitras. I also need the acknowledgment of receipt sheets."
The four soldiers then compile the unclaimed vouchers and the acknowledgment sheets on their respective desks. Mikasa goes around the room to collect them, holding out the storage box so the others can place the sealed envelopes and clipped papers in it. Once done, Mikasa thanks her comrades before leaving.
---
Once inside her and Levi’s office, Mikasa sets the box on her desk before sitting in her chair. She then takes the envelopes and papers out. She stacks the acknowledgment sheets on one side of her desk before sorting out the envelopes alphabetically.
Just as she’s through the surnames starting with the letter ‘E’, she hears a knock on the door.
Knock. Knock. “Hello?” comes a timid female voice.
“Come in.”
The door opens to reveal a middle-aged woman in a long dark-brown dress. The visitor has light brown hair tied into a messy ponytail and a small sling bag on her left shoulder. In her arms is a small boy, dozing soundly against her right shoulder. Mikasa guesses that the boy is around three years old based on his size.
“Good afternoon, Ma’am,” Mikasa greets the visitor, setting the envelopes down. “Can I help you with something?”
“Yes. Good afternoon, Captain Mikasa,” the woman greets with a small smile as she closes the office door. “My name is Martha Kelvey. I’m here to claim my benefits voucher," she explains. She adjusts her hold on her sleeping son before taking a few hesitant steps forward, "I … hope I can still claim it today. I know that it's already beyond the usual business hours…."
"Of course, you can," Mikasa assures with a firm nod. "Please, come in."
Mrs. Kelvey smiles at the invitation and walks toward the female captain’s desk. Mikasa immediately sifts through the envelopes, searching for the surname ‘Kelvey”. She eventually sees one with the following written inscription on the back:
Beneficiary:
Kelvey, Martha
314 Rivers Street, Trost District
Wife of:
Kelvey, Harvey
Team Leader
Team 2
Fourth Division
Survey Corps Regiment
Date of Death:
25th day, 7th Month, Year 849
“Ma’am, I would just like to confirm if your husband was Team Leader Harvey Kelvey,” Mikasa states, lifting her head to address the other woman.
A sad gleam enters Mrs. Kelvey’s eyes as she responds. “He was.”
“Then this voucher is for you,” Mikasa says quietly, holding out the envelope.
With her right arm supporting her sleeping child, Mrs. Kelvey uses her left hand to take the envelope. She then flips the flap of her sling bag with the same hand and places the envelope inside.
“I need you to sign this acknowledgment of receipt sheet for our records,” Mikasa states, sifting through the thin pile of papers. Once she finds the correct sheet, she takes it from the stack and places it in front of Mrs. Kelvey. “Just write your name and place your signature next to your husband’s name," Mikasa explains, putting a pen next to the paper.
Mrs. Kelvey leans over and examines the sheet of paper. There are two columns on it – the first contains the names of soldiers whose pensions and benefits were being claimed; the second is a series of blank spaces for the beneficiaries to write their names and sign their signatures. Mrs. Kelvey notices that most of the blanks have already been signed. She spots her husband’s name quickly since the adjoining blank next to it is still blank. Once she signs her name, she slides the pen and paper back to Mikasa.
“Thank you, Mrs. Kelvey,” Mikasa says. Once she places the sheet of paper back in the pile, she quietly stands from behind her desk, surprising her visitor.
“Before you leave, I would just like to take this opportunity to say that the Survey Corps is deeply grateful for your husband’s service,” Mikasa says quietly, clasping her hands respectfully as she meets the other’s woman’s gaze directly. “I did not know Team Leader Kelvey personally. But I know it takes great courage to fight for our Regiment. And for that alone, he already had mine and the Corps’ deepest respect. My fellow soldiers and I are truly sorry for your loss.”
Mrs. Kelvey’s eyes glisten at the sincerity in the female captain’s voice. “Thank you,” she says quietly, holding her son even closer to her.
Mikasa nods in response. Even after Mrs. Kelvey turns around to head for the door, she remains standing. The older woman is about halfway to the door when she suddenly stops.
Mikasa’s brows raise in confusion. “Mrs. Kelvey? Is something wrong?”
Mrs. Kelvey slowly turns around to face the captain again.
"I… uhm... I…" she trails off when she starts to sway in place. A second later, her eyes begin to flutter.
"Mrs. Kelvey!" Mikasa instantly moves from her desk and goes to the woman. The female captain places her hands on Mrs. Kelvey, steadying her before she can fall. The other woman regains her footing and shakes her head to become more alert before re-adjusting her hold on her son, who is still sleeping.
“You almost fainted. You should sit down,” Mikasa states, noting that her visitor looks slightly pale. With one arm around Mrs. Kelvey, the female captain guides her to the divan on the other side of the room.
“I’m so sorry about that, Captain,” Mrs. Kelvey says as they reach the divan, “I’d been working all day at my tailor shop. And I’ve been so busy that I forgot to eat lunch.”
“You have nothing to apologize for,” Mikasa replies, helping the woman to sit, “But you really should eat something.”
Once her visitors are settled, Mikasa makes her way to the stove on the other side of the room. She opens the overhead cupboard and takes a teacup, a tea tin, and a biscuit tin. She then places a tea bag into the cup and pours water from the kettle on the stove. The water is no longer hot; it has been two hours since it was prepared, but it is still mildly warm. Once the teacup is full, Mikasa grabs it and the biscuit tin and returns to the divan.
“Please have some tea,” Mikasa says, placing the cup on the table fronting the divan, “And some biscuits,” she adds, opening the tin to reveal an array of biscuits.
Mrs. Kelvey looks bashful at the offer. “Oh, my. Thank you so much, Captain Mikasa. I’m very sorry to trouble you like this.”
“Again, you have nothing to apologize for,” Mikasa states, sitting next to her. “Please eat and drink.”
At the prompting, Mrs. Kelvey grabs a biscuit with her left hand, taking care to secure her son with her right arm. Once she swallows, she takes a drink of the tea before grabbing another biscuit. As she continues to eat and drink, Mikasa notices that she is starting to look less pale, with more color now circulating in her cheeks.
“I feel so much better now,” Mrs. Kelvey states after her eighth biscuit. She drinks from the cup one last time, draining it of all the tea. “Thank you again, Captain,” she says, turning to Mikasa with a grateful smile. “Not just for the food and drink, but also for steadying me earlier. If you didn’t, then I would’ve crashed down and hurt Mark,” she adds, shifting her gaze to her son and wrapping both arms around him.
“Of course. I’m glad to have been of help,” Mikasa nods. “Now, I believe that there was something that you wanted to tell me earlier,” she says, referring to how Mrs. Kelvey was about to say something before she had a near-fainting spell.
Mrs. Kelvey’s smile fades as an uncertain look crosses her face. “Oh, yes… I---,” she trails off again, looking away from the captain as she ruminates on her words.
Mikasa simply sits quietly, waiting for the other woman to continue speaking.
"I--- was wondering if…." Mrs. Kelvey faces the captain again, "… if… if…” as she struggles to get her words out, tears start to form in her eyes. She raises her left hand to wipe them away.
“’If’ what, Mrs. Kelvey?” Mikasa asks in a quiet and patient voice.
Mrs. Kelvey takes a shuddering breath to compose herself. She closes her eyes as she inhales and exhales until she feels calmer.
“I… was wondering… if my husband contributed anything at all,” Mrs. Kelvey eventually states, opening her watery and slightly red eyes.
Mikasa is about to respond, but she stops herself when the older woman turns to look at the floor.
“You see, Harvey used to be a Garrison soldier before he transferred to the Survey Corps,” Mrs. Kelvey explains, sniffling as she wipes another errant tear away. “He was on duty at Shiganshina when Wall Maria was breached. He was injured, but he survived. And while he was recovering, he spoke about feeling guilty.
“Harvey was a wonderful husband to me. He was also a good father to Mark. But he wasn’t… the most responsible soldier at the time,” Mrs. Kelvey states, “Like most of his fellow Garrison officers, he didn’t take his duties seriously. He didn’t drink heavily on duty like the others, but he never turned down an opportunity to play cards or to take naps. He was actually called ‘the snorer’ because he slept most of the time,” a fond smile breaks through Mrs. Kelvey’s morose expression, and Mikasa sees a nostalgic gleam in her teary eyes.
"Speaking of which, Harvey told me that he was actually taking a nap when the breach happened," Mrs. Kelvey continues to narrate, her slight smile fading away. "He was sleeping at the guard tower of the Inner Wall when a strong rumbling shook him awake. When he finally came to, the first thing he saw was the large hole in the Outer Wall and Titans roaming the streets. His fellow Garrison soldiers were squabbling about what to do while civilians were running and screaming. He said he felt so confused and scared that he didn't know what to do. The next thing he knew, a large Titan smashed through the Inner Gate.”
Mikasa presses her lips tightly as her own memories of the breach flash through her mind. She recalls seeing the Armored Titan rampaging down the streets, unaffected by canon fire, before destroying the Inner Gate. Thankfully, the last loaded ships had already left the docks before any more civilians could be injured.
Mrs. Kelvey takes a deep breath before continuing. “He was hit by some debris, but there wasn’t any permanent damage. But it was clear that he felt awful for not being able to do more during the breach. I remember him saying that if only he and the rest of the Garrison were actually prepared, then maybe the damage wouldn’t have been so bad.”
The captain exhales silently at that. Indeed, the Garrison's complacency and lack of vigilance at the time significantly contributed to the damages that were sustained. If there had been proper action and planning, more civilians could have been saved.
“Harvey became more serious and diligent after that. But when the government’s plan to retake Wall Maria failed, he decided that he could do more if he became a Survey Corps soldier…."
Mrs. Kelvey trails off again as fresh tears form in her eyes.
"I told him that he could already do much with the Garrison. I tried to convince him not to transfer by pointing out that the Garrison was improving… But he said that we need to take back the lands they stole from us and that the Titans need to be stopped as soon as possible. He argued that no one knows if another breach will happen, so the smart thing to do would be to act as soon and as fast as possible.”
As Mrs. Kelvey continues to speak, the tears start to trail down her cheeks.
“But I told him that our son needs his father… Mark was born to us in the summer of Year 846,” she sobs. She takes a moment to gaze at her son and wrap her arms more tightly around him. Even with tears swimming in her eyes, Mikasa can see the older woman's love for her child. The captain then looks at the boy; little Mark Kelvey is still dozing soundly against his mother’s shoulder, unaware of what’s happening.
“But Harvey countered by saying that Mark was his biggest inspiration for joining the Survey Corps…." Mrs. Kelvey cries softly, "He said he wanted to help make the world a better place for Mark to live in. He wanted to ensure that Mark could grow up without being afraid that Titans might take away his home someday."
Mrs. Kelvey presses a kiss on the top of her son’s head. She pauses to lightly stroke the boy’s hair.
"I still tried to talk him out of it. I told him that the Survey Corps' current top priority is reclaiming Wall Maria, which would take years to accomplish. I told him it'll be long before the Corps can even think about eradicating Titans altogether. But Harvey was adamant. He said that it was only right for the Corps to first focus on getting our lands back. ‘Martha, the Titans already took over the rest of the world beyond the Walls. Letting them keep Wall Maria would be letting them win!’ Those were his words to me. He said it would be a long and hard battle, but he was willing to fight it. Both for humanity… and our family.”
At this point, more tears leak through the corners of Mrs. Kelvey’s eyes, and she does not try to wipe them away. Instead, she just lets them fall.
“Harvey was so sure. He had that determined look in his eyes that said that he wasn't going to change his mind. So, I did the only thing I could: let him join the Survey Corps and hope that he comes back to us every time after every expedition.”
Mrs. Kelvey then takes another shuddering breath as she lifts her gaze from her son’s head. Mikasa sits a bit straighter when the grieving widow sets her hurt and tear-stricken eyes on her.
“Captain Mikasa, I will be honest. I cannot even begin to imagine how dangerous it must be for the Survey Corps to fight Titans regularly,” Mrs. Kelvey says softly, understanding shining through her cloud of grief.
“But even so… I sometimes can’t help but think that… Harvey d-died for n-n-nothing…” her voice cracks, no longer able to maintain any composure. “I—I  don’t mean to disrespect the Corps or… to *sobs* insult my husband’s memory… but H-Harvey died before the Survey Corps could even accomplish its main goals. *sniffles* The Titans are s-still roaming around… and W-Wall Maria is still un-reclaimed.”
Mrs. Kelvey blinks away the tears swimming in her eyes, too emotionally drained to reach up and wipe them with her hand.
“So… I wonder… what were all of his efforts for? Does his death mean anything? Did my son lose his father for nothing?”
The pain, disappointment, and frustration are evident in her voice. The grieving widow then opens her eyes again, and Mikasa’s heart wrenches. Through the layers of pain in Mrs. Kelvey’s eyes, Mikasa also sees a pleading look in them. The captain has seen that look before – it’s the hopeless look of a person seeking to make sense of painful loss.
“Mrs. Kelvey…” Mikasa addresses the older woman, speaking softly. “I understand what you're feeling. I would also feel hurt, disappointed, and frustrated if I were in your place. Your frustrations and sentiments are valid, and they are not disrespectful to the Survey Corps at all. Nor are they an insult to Team Leader Harvey’s memory.”
The older woman’s pained expression shifts at this, and she turns in her seat to face the captain more fully.
“I would also like to say that I appreciate you trying to understand us despite your grief,” Mikasa says, tone calm and soothing. “It is true that reclaiming Wall Maria is the first priority right now. Team Leader Harvey correctly said that taking back our lost lands first is crucial. Losing Wall Maria and its lands was a huge blow for humanity – morally, logistically, and economically. Even though nearly 4 years have passed since the breach, there are still prevalent economic problems within the kingdom. So, as it stands, we must fight for our lands so that humanity can thrive.”
Mikasa is aware that other people might think that she is being defensive. However, she believes that explaining the significance of the reclamation operation might alleviate some of Mrs. Kelvey's pain.
Before the breach 4 years ago, there was a steady flow of trade and business between and among the three Walls. As such, the loss of Wall Maria and its vast lands resulted in significant economic losses. With the Titan infestation, districts and towns located within Wall Maria had to be evacuated, with the evacuees sent to live inside the other two Walls. Consequently, businesses, trades, and natural resources were abandoned – all of which led to supply shortages, mass unemployment, and inflated prices within Wall Rose and Wall Sheena.
The economic situation has improved considerably in the past few years. However, many people are still unemployed, impoverished, and hungry.
“Once that is accomplished, then the Survey Corps will focus its energy on eradicating the Titans for good and expanding humanity’s territory to reach beyond the three Walls,” Mikasa continues to explain, “But taking Wall Maria back is easier said than done. To say that reclaiming it is difficult is a gross understatement. The thousands of acres of land beyond Wall Rose are infested with countless Titans. The Titans easily outnumber the Survey Corps by hundreds, if not thousands. Even so, we try our best to make do with our limited manpower and resources.”
The captain’s own words cause her to recall past expeditions, and she lapses into a pause. For a quick moment, scenes of Titans breaking through formations and comrades being eaten while still on horseback play in her mind. But she forces herself to momentarily set aside the unpleasant recollections so that she can focus on the current conversation.
“I admit that our progress rate is not the most impressive,” Mikasa states plainly, her expression serious. “But we manage to get further with every mission and expedition, even if it's only by a handful of miles. The victories we get may seem small to most people, but we do not take them for granted. Because every step forward is proof that there’s still hope for a better future.
“That being said, every victory is only possible because of the work of everyone involved. Not even the most powerful soldier can take back Wall Maria on their own. Our strength comes in numbers. The Survey Corps is absolutely nothing without the collective efforts of every man and woman who is brave enough to step forward and face the dangers head-on. The credit for any and all progress goes to all our members, especially those who gave their lives for the cause.”
The air around them is quiet but not tense. Mikasa speaks solemnly, with no traces of false modesty, sarcasm, or anything derisive in her tone. There’s also a sober earnestness in the captain's gaze, and Mrs. Kelvey finds that she cannot look away.
“Nothing that we can say or do will take away your pain or bring your husband back,” Mikasa admits, expression empathic. “But we promise you that the Survey Corps won't let his death be in vain. We will take back Wall Maria. And we will eradicate the Titans one day.”
Mikasa slowly raises her right hand, clenching it into a fist and placing it over her chest.
“On my word as a captain of the Survey Corps, we won’t stop until we succeed.”
A myriad of emotions dance on Mrs. Kelvey’s face, and fresh tears start to form in her eyes.
“I --- I ---I…." Mrs. Kelvey stammers, momentarily overwhelmed by her feelings, “I had no idea how badly I needed to hear that.”
The tears then fall down her cheeks, and the widow cries softly, holding her son close. Only this time, the tears are caused by something else other than grief.
“Ever since I received the notification that Harvey died, I kept wondering if his death meant anything. Losing him still hurts… but…."
Mrs. Kelvey raises her eyes to the captain again. “… I’m glad that his efforts weren’t for nothing. And that his sacrifices will be honored... I feel a bit better now...” she sniffles as a watery smile breaks across her face, “Thank you, Captain.”
Mikasa nods, smiling tentatively. “Of course,” she says, placing her fist down.
A few seconds later, little Mark Kelvey stirs in his mother’s arms. The two women watch as the small boy lifts his head from his mother’s shoulder.
“It looks like someone’s finally awake,” Mrs. Kelvey chuckles, fondly rubbing the back of her son's head. “Our Mark has always been a heavy sleeper.”
The solemn atmosphere considerably lightens when Mrs. Kelvey’s watery eyes brighten with obvious affection as she watches her still sleepy-faced son rouse from his nap.
Little Mark blinks his eyes, still not fully alert. “Mommy?”
“I’m here, sweetie.”
When Mark blinks the last remnants of sleep away, he finally notices the tears on his mother’s face.
“Why are you crying, Mommy?” he asks, reaching up to wipe a tear away from her cheek. “Did something bad happen?”
Mrs. Kelvey smiles as she shakes her head. “No, sweetie. Nothing bad happened. I was just talking about your daddy with Captain Mikasa over here,” she explains, quickly shifting her gaze to the younger woman, “and I just suddenly missed him extra after we finished talking.”
Mark follows the direction of his mother’s gaze and turns around in her arms. His eyes widen upon seeing the captain, not having noticed her until now.
“Oh, hi!” Mark exclaims, surprised. “Sorry! I didn’t see you!”
Mikasa smiles. “It’s okay.”
“My name is Mark,” the little boy says, smiling as he holds out a tiny hand for a handshake. “Nice to meet you, pretty lady.”
Mikasa laughs lightly. “Nice to meet you, too, Mark. I’m Captain Mikasa,” she says, using her thumb and index finger to shake the proffered hand.
“It looks like he likes you, Captain,” Mrs. Kelvey remarks, voice teasing.
Mark’s face instantly turns red. “Mommy! It’s not like that!” he insists, huffing as he turns back to his mother.
Mrs. Kelvey laughs. “There’s no harm in having a crush, sweetie.”
“Mommy!” Mark exclaims, face turning even redder.
The young boy then crosses his arms and looks down at the floor, clearly embarrassed. Mrs. Kelvey just smiles and starts poking his cheeks, playfully asking him to give her a big smile. Mark tries to resist at first, but he eventually gives in, turning to his mother with a large grin.
Mikasa feels a warmth bloom inside her at the sight of the two Kelveys. A gentle smile forms on her face at the display of familial love and happiness.
And as she continues watching the mother and son pair interact, she starts to wonder what it would be like to raise a family with Levi.
---
- A FEW HOURS LATER -
The page rustles as Levi uses his thumb to turn it so that he can read the next paragraph in his book. As his eyes scan the paper, Mikasa idly taps a finger against his left arm, which is loosely wrapped around her waist. She’s curled up against his side, resting her head on his shoulder and absentmindedly gazing at the ceiling. Meanwhile, Levi uses his other arm to hold up the book.
Earlier in the morning, Levi left with Erwin and Hange to go to Mitras for the third quarterly audit meeting with Premier Zackly. After spending most of the day in a conference room, the three officers returned to their headquarters a couple of hours ago, just as the sky had turned dark.
After winding up last-minute office work, Levi and Mikasa are now in Levi's room, dressed for bed and lying against the headboard of his bed. Ever since they first slept together, the pair had started to spend every night together – whether it be to make love or simply lie in bed together. Sometimes, they spend the night in Mikasa's room, and sometimes they spend it in Levi's room.
Levi is halfway through the page when Mikasa calls out to him.
“Levi?” she says his name softly, turning her head to him.
“Yeah?” he asks, eyes still on his book.
“I have something I want to ask you.”
Levi hears the serious tone in her voice, and he folds one corner of the page before closing the book shut and placing it on his nightstand.
“What is it?” he turns to her, giving her his full attention.
Mikasa takes a moment before speaking again.
“Have you ever thought about having children?”
Levi blinks once. “Children?” he repeats, briefly going over the question in his mind.
After a second, a realization comes to him, and his eyes widen considerably.
“Did I get you pregnant?” Levi blurts out, placing his free hand on her stomach and shifting his gaze to it.
The pair have made love countless times ever since their first night together. However, Mikasa always makes sure that she takes the contraceptive tonic after every tryst. Now, his mind tries to think of plausible reasons that would explain how a woman can get pregnant despite drinking the tonic.
They had never talked about children before, although, in the back of Levi's mind, he knew that it was a discussion that they would eventually have someday. But it looks like they will have this talk much sooner than he expected.
Mikasa’s own eyes widen, realizing that her question gave the wrong impression.
“No!” she exclaims, covering his hand on her stomach with hers.
“I’m not pregnant,” she assures, pressing his hand further into her abdomen to emphasize that nothing is growing inside her. “The contraceptive tonic is as effective as it has ever been.”
“Oh,” Levi breathes out deeply. The surge of anxious anticipation from earlier fades at her assurance, and he suddenly feels stupid for jumping to conclusions.
“I’m sorry,” Mikasa says, brushing the top of his hand, “I didn’t mean to give you that impression.”
Levi shakes his head, “No, it’s my fault. I shouldn’t have jumped the gun like that.”
A silence then fills the air, and the awkwardness and surprise of the moment dissipate when the couple takes a moment to gather their thoughts.
“So, why the question about kids?” Levi eventually asks, clasping Mikasa’s hand. “Since we’ve already talked about marriage, I knew we'd probably talk about kids at some point. But why ask about it now?”
Mikasa smiles slightly. It’s a fair question. With their positions in the Survey Corps and the regiment’s current need for as much manpower as possible, Mikasa has not thought much about having children, not even after Levi proposed to her.
But after meeting the Kelleys that afternoon, she found herself contemplating the idea.
“I started thinking about children after I met a widow who came to me to claim the voucher for her husband’s pension and benefits,” Mikasa answers honestly, recalling her conversation with Martha Kelvey.
Levi raises a brow. “I didn’t know that Erwin assigned you to voucher-releasing duty today.”
“He didn't,” Mikasa responds, “but he did ask me to hold all unclaimed vouchers for safekeeping until they’re turned over to him. After I collected the vouchers, Mrs. Kelvey – the widow I was talking about, came to our office with her son, Mark. Mark was asleep on her shoulder when she arrived,” she explains, shifting her gaze to the bedsheets around their waists as she tells the story. “Anyway, she asked if she could claim her voucher even though it was already past business hours. I told her that she could.”
Levi listens as Mikasa recounts her conversation with Mrs. Kelvey. His girlfriend describes how the widow nearly fainted from hunger due to working all day and forgetting to eat. She then narrates how Mrs. Kelvey shared the story of her late husband. Levi listens to the details of how Harvey Kelvey was once an undisciplined Garrison soldier who became a dedicated member of the Survey Corps after seeing first-hand the havoc brought upon by the Titans during the breach 4 years ago. He listens attentively when Mikasa explains that their fallen comrade was especially inspired to join the Survey Corps after his son was born.
And when Mikasa delves into the details of Mrs. Kelvey’s grief – how the widow felt disappointed and frustrated while trying to make sense of her husband’s death, Levi feels a surge of sympathy for the family their comrade left behind. Even though he never met the grieving woman, Levi can already sense her pain from Mikasa’s second-hand account.
In the back of his mind, Levi thinks that he has always considered slaying Titans easier than facing their fallen comrades' grieving families.
Levi then hears how Mikasa was able to alleviate some of the widow's grief by promising her that the Corps would honor their comrade's death by not allowing his sacrifice to be in vain. Levi nods in concurrence, silently re-affirming his resolve to keep fighting.
And then, the story shifts to how young Mark Kelvey woke up just as Mikasa and Mrs. Kelvey were wrapping up the conversation. At that moment, Levi notices a soft, pensive look enter Mikasa’s eyes.
“Little Mark had been sleeping in mother’s arms for most of our conversation, and he woke up just when we were wrapping up,” Mikasa explains, tone becoming softer. “He noticed that his mother had been crying and asked what was wrong. Mrs. Kelvey said that nothing was wrong and that she had just been talking with me.”
A smile then breaks out on her face. “Mark didn’t notice that I was there, so he was surprised when he saw me. He then gave me a sweet smile and called me a 'pretty lady' when he introduced himself. Mrs. Kelvey teased him by saying that he probably had a crush on me, and Mark blushed while denying it.
“His mother kept teasing him, and Mark's face became redder, and he turned away from her with a huff," Mikasa laughs lightly, "Mrs. Kelvey just laughed and poked his cheeks while asking him to give her a big smile. Mark resisted initially, but he caved in and turned to her with a large grin.”
Mikasa then takes a breath, a fond smile on her face. “I found the sight of them heartwarming," she admits. “Seeing Mrs. Kelvey being so happy and loving with her son like that… it made me think that it must be wonderful to have a family of your own.
“It’s odd,” Mikasa says suddenly, a hint of realization and a bit of humor in her tone, “I was happy while growing up with my own parents. But it took seeing another family being happy to make me think this.”
She then turns her gaze back to Levi, who has been listening quietly.
“I… hope that I’m making sense,” she says a bit sheepishly.
Levi nods. “You are,” he assures, wrapping his arm around her more firmly and bringing her closer.
“I can understand the appeal of having children,” Levi states. “But it’s a big decision to make. Having kids isn’t just about giving birth to them. It’s also about raising them. And that’s a serious responsibility. It’s not a choice that should be made lightly.
“And to be honest…” he trails off, voice becoming quiet, “… having kids is not a priority for me right now,” he admits. “With both of us being Survey Corps soldiers, I don't think it'd be fair to any kids we might have."
Mikasa sighs, nodding her head. Considering the always-present risk of death that follows them, it truly wouldn’t be fair to their children.
“I understand your point,” she tells him, voice likewise quiet, “I never even considered children before today. After all, it wouldn’t be wise for me to fight if I’m carrying a child inside me,” she jests with a slight smile, and even Levi makes an amused sound.
"But in all seriousness, I wouldn't want to bring a child into this world unless I'm sure that they can live happily and safely," Mikasa says, becoming more solemn, "I also wouldn't want to give birth to children only to leave them behind as orphans if both of us die.”
Mikasa then shifts her gaze downwards again. She bites her lip, mulling over the next question she wants to ask him.
“But assuming, if, during our lifetimes, we manage to eradicate all of the Titans…." Mikasa starts to say, tone tentative. She knows that the hypothetical situation of a Titan-free world is likely to stay hypothetical for a long time.
But still, she wants to know.
“… would you consider having children with me?” Mikasa asks, raising her eyes to meet Levi’s.
“You’re right that having children is not a choice to make lightly. It would still be a huge decision even if things become peaceful enough for us to raise a family,” she adds, “But I’m open to the idea, and I want to know if you’re open to it as well.”
A peaceful world without Titans has always been their goal, but they know they still have a long and difficult way to go before they can achieve it.
Even so, Mikasa’s question prompts Levi to imagine what it’d be like to live in such a world with her. He can see them growing old together 50 years from now – living out the rest of their years as ordinary citizens doing mundane things instead of soldiers always anticipating danger.
At the same time, he can also picture Mikasa around 10 – 15 years from now, holding a dark-haired baby to her chest. He can see the baby fussing and Mikasa calming them down by singing a soft lullaby. Levi can also hear the same child a few years later, this time as a tiny toddler who's urging him to run faster as he gives them a ride on his shoulders. And just as he picks up the pace, he hears another child crying. When he turns around, he sees Mikasa carrying their second child. The younger one complains to his mother that it's their turn to get a ride on their father's shoulders. In response, Mikasa just smiles patiently and tells them to wait until their older sibling’s turn is done.
“It would be a big decision,” Levi says quietly after a moment of contemplation.
“We can never know what might happen in the future. But assuming that we get rid of all the Titans,” he says, pulling her closer to him, “and assuming that we’re still young enough to conceive when that happens,” he says a bit wryly this time, prompting a light giggle from Mikasa.
“… I would definitely consider it,” Levi tells her, not once breaking away from her gaze.
Mikasa’s dark eyes glimmer at his words, and her lips curve into a bright smile.
“I’m very happy to hear that, Levi.”
Levi smiles at the genuine joy on his lover’s face. As they hold each other’s gaze, more images of dark-haired children playing around appear in his mind.
“Just so you know,” he says, raising a hand to hold one side of her face, “if we do have brats, then we’d have to make sure that they don’t get into fights.”
Mikasa huffs a laugh as she leans into his touch. “What makes you think that our children will become troublemakers?”
“I’m not worried about our brats starting fights,” he explains, caressing her cheek. “But I am worried that they might break the bones of anyone who wants to pick on them.”
Laughing lightly, Mikasa leans into him and wraps her arms around his torso. “In that case, we'd have to teach them how to control their strength. Also, don’t call our children ‘brats’.”

End Note:
So, they had the talk about kids. Hahaha. Will they have Ackerbabies in the future? Let's see. Hahaha.
So, apart from Ackerbaby talk, I also wanted to use this chapter to show how grieving families of fallen Survey Corps soldiers cope or deal with their losses. In the canon story, most of the attention is on how surviving Survey Corps members cope with losing comrades by making sure that the sacrifices of the fallen won't be in vain. And this makes sense since the story mostly centers on them. But I wanted to show the other side of that - meaning, the side of the families that the fallen soldiers left behind.
I know that Mrs. Kelvey's case is only one out of many possible reactions. But even so, I hope that I was able to this idea justice, and that I was able to execute this idea well. But if I didn't, then please let me know how it could've better or what aspects could've been improved!
As always, comments, reviews, and critiques would be most welcome and appreciated. Please let me know what you think!
